MYS 2022: H2 Yacht Design Discusses the Explorer Trend

By Emily Dawkins

On day one of the Monaco Yacht Show, we were delighted to be joined in the studio by H2 Yacht Design Founder, Jonny Horsfield. In conversation with the founder, we discussed the latest trends in yacht design, and the studio’s considerations for bringing the outside, in.

‘It's all about speed, cost and flexibility,’ commented H2 Yacht Design  Founder, Jonny Horsfield, when asked about his extensive experience in refits, ‘it [refitting] teaches you to be flexible and think on your feet a little bit.’

Designing the likes of 183m revolutionary superyacht REV, Horsfield discussed what he has witnessed regarding the trends of interior yacht design: ‘today it's all about space planning, light and the functionality of a yacht.’

‘We’re going towards this explorer trend’ , added the London-based designer, who has witnessed the demand for client interiors needing to be,  ‘functional and hard-wearing’, as the owners of today are more intrigued by travelling and exploring the world: ‘they want a go-anywhere vessel.’

Among H2 Yacht Design’s stand-out designs are the iconic vessels of VICTORIOUS, TATIANA and ARROW. Each with differing owner requirements, Horsfield highlights how, ‘they’re all very different and that's what's great’ .  Arrow is just a really elegant and beautiful yacht…we really focused on the classic design for her owners.’

‘It's been one of my most enjoyable years’ , commented Horsfield, ‘and I’m pretty positive that the next five years are going to continue to be pretty strong.’

With a busy schedule on the horizon for H2 Yacht Design, we're looking forward to keeping our readers updated with the latest from the British design studio.

"Today it's all about space planning, light and the functionality of a yacht." Jonny Horsfield, Founder, H2 Yacht Design

Christened Storm and Portofino, the two newcomers both feature a highly optimized and efficient hull designed by Lateral Naval Architects. (All Simply Custom yachts have the same hull, in fact.) Each vessel also offers an impressive gross tonnage of approximately 2,500 to 2,700 GT. Spread across five decks, the living quarters offer ample space for entertaining and seven guest cabins. (The owner’s stateroom is located on the upper deck, while the six guest suites sit on the main deck.)

Oceanco H2 Yacht Design Storm Superyacht

Storm and Portofino will be cleaner, greener cruisers, too. Low-emission propulsion is a major focus of the Simply Custom series, with each yacht powered by hybrid diesel-electric systems. “This architecture will be the one common thread across all the designs,” Oceanco’s Paris Baloumis told Robb Report last October. “We’re also designing it so that future propulsion technologies, when they become available, can be retrofitted into the design.”

The two yachts have clear differences, though. Storm is characterized by a sleek, aggressive profile that “combines the elegant, flowing lines of a timeless Bentley coupe with a tapering aft end, giving that sense of speed and elegance from a bygone era,” according to H2 Yacht Design ’s founder and creative director Jonny Horsfield.

Oceanco H2 Yacht Design Portofino Superyacht

Portofino, on the other hand, reflects the classic style of its namesake Italian fishing village. Horsfield says the yacht’s timeless design is contrasted by “ruthlessly modern” detailing, such as a flared bow and a dramatically shaped transom. Other hallmarks include a sculpted superstructure, tapered decks, and glass bulwarks.

“Both designs are flexible enough to accommodate any client preferences,” Horsfield adds.

To that end, the Simply Custom series is designed to simplify (and speed up) the customization process for owners without sacrificing quality. Sounds like a win-win.

Putin's superyacht abruptly left Germany amid sanction warnings over Russia-Ukraine tensions, report says

  • Vladimir Putin's yacht Graceful left Hamburg before finishing repairs, German media reported.
  • It is speculated Graceful made an abrupt exit to avoid Western sanctions if Russia invaded Ukraine.
  • The luxury superyacht is said to be worth at least $100 million.

Insider Today

A yacht named Graceful and said to belong to Russian President Vladimir Putin left port in Hamburg abruptly before finishing repairs, according to reports from German media.

It is unclear what prompted the move, but the $100 million yacht's relocation from German waters to Kaliningrad, part of Russian territory, came amid fears the West would impose sanctions if Russia invaded Ukraine.

While Moscow has continuously denied any plans to invade its neighbor, it has gathered over 100,000 troops at positions all around Ukraine and has even sent six assault ships into the Black Sea, moving more combat power toward the former Soviet territory.

The US and UK have warned of sanctions on Russian elites , and President Joe Biden has threatened to sanction Putin personally should Russia decide to attack Ukraine. He has also deployed troops to Eastern Europe to support NATO members and has put thousands of US troops on "heightened alert" as tensions rise.

Some have speculated that sanctions could target certain luxury assets. Graceful was spotted on a public maritime-traffic-tracking site sailing for Kaliningrad.

—Manu Gómez (@GDarkconrad) February 9, 2022

Graceful arrived last year in Hamburg, where the superyacht has been receiving several modifications, including two forward balconies and an extension to the swimming platform, Boat International reported.

It was built by the German shipbuilding company Blohm and Voss and officially launched in 2014. Designed by H2 Yacht Design, Graceful is classified as a tri-deck superyacht, according to Boat International.

The luxury yacht is 270 feet long and equipped with a gym, a saloon featuring a white Steinway piano, a spa, a library, and a 49-foot indoor pool that can be converted into a dance floor. The vessel is meant to accommodate up to 12 guests and 14 crew.

Jonny Horsfield, H2's founder, told Boat International in 2015 that Graceful was meant to be a timeless yacht.

"The owner is a very confident person," Horsfield told the outlet without mentioning Putin directly. "He knows what he likes and he's not a slave to trends."

The Russian president's net worth is unknown, but it has been speculated that Putin is worth as much as $200 billion, if not more, Fortune previously reported . Documents leaked last year suggested that Putin had secret assets abroad.

The 50 most expensive yachts for sale now

How much does a superyacht cost? The answer is not so simple. Much like a luxury watch or car, the asking price depends on a variety of factors such as age, pedigree and finish, with the largest and newest vessels peaking into the hundreds of millions. To give you a better idea, BOAT International rounds up the 50 most expensive yachts currently listed for sale, starting with Lady Lara ...

Phoenix 2  takes a page (or two) from Art Deco styling with her cherry velvet flooring and gilded details. The owner commissioned Winch Design to create her intricate cityscape-inspired design concept, including a 5.7-metre phoenix figurehead modelled after the Chrysler building's mounted eagles. Roaring highlights include a sommelier room, multiple swimming pools, a plush cinema room and a custom Steinway for some musical accompaniment at mealtimes. During a refit period between 2014 and 2015, she was extended by 6.1 metres resulting in additional exterior spaces. Her 14-metre beam results in a spacious owner's apartment (with private access to a Jacuzzi) and plenty of spaces for entertaining, such as the skylounge with games room and bar. A vast beach club, cinema, grand piano and elevator to all decks are other standout features. Irish Boxer Conor McGregor was spotted holidaying on the superyacht in 2021.

Builder : Piriou Length : 77.6m Designers : Pierre-Jacques Kubis

She's ice-classed, Polar-code compliant and equipped with a barge, seaplane and enough provisions to keep 18 people fed for 50 days. Her 2,198GT interiors were often used to house researchers, scientists and students, to the end of educating and progressing global conservation efforts. The superyacht is also built to be 95 per cent recyclable and is Clean Ship certified, resulting in very low environmental impact with minimal fuel consumption. Named after bacteriologist Doctor Alexandre Yersin, the ceremony was attended by HSH Prince Albert II and blessed by the Vicar General of Monaco .

Builder : Amels Length : 61.5m Designers : Michael Leach Design

Calypso stands out thanks to her voluminous, "lavish" interiors, including a spectacular two-level master suite at main deck level. Stretching to the yacht's full beam, this suite is described as a "sanctuary" and sports an overhead skylight. Leach rarely holds back on ceiling heights and Calypso's is 4.2 metres high here. Meanwhile, the sundeck is split into three sections: a lounge seating and Jacuzzi area; an enclosed, air-conditioned gym; an open space designed for sunbathing or al fresco workouts, which also has an outdoor cinema set-up.

Builder : Lürssen Length : 60.7m Designer : Winch Design , Espen Øino International

Marguerite was built under the supervision of the Moran new construction team, with a design brief that requested a private owner’s area, professional dive centre, hefty tender storage and the ability to cruise for thirty days at a time. The owner's cabin is a particular highlight, spanning two decks and designed with an observation lounge, access to a private foredeck and a floating staircase that leads to an upper deck study. The yacht benefitted from a full interior refit after a change in ownership at the end of 2021.

Builder : Feadship Length : 55m Designer : Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects , Rémi Tessier

Delivered in 2010, Kahalani has been privately owned by one owner since new and has been helmed by the same captain. She benefits from two large saloons, with the bridge deck saloon, unusually, being full-beam. Tessier's contrasting light and dark finishes make for a spectacularly clean and contemporary look throughout the interior. Elsewhere, the sundeck sports a Jacuzzi, full bar and completely sheltered dining for 12. The bridge deck offers indoor-outdoor formal dining at a large circular table for 12, thanks to semi-circular glass sliding doors.

Builder : Feadship Length : 62.3m Designers : Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects , Liz Dalton , Winch Design

Delivered in 2000, Flag underwent a major refit in 2012 saw her awarded Best Refitted Yacht at the World Superyacht Awards in 2013. Work included a sun-filled interior completely restyled by Chahan . Accommodation is across a flexible seven-cabin layout, with leisure highlights such as a lift accessing all decks, a fully-equipped gym and a sundeck swimming pool surrounded by sunpads. Dining options range from formal to a chef's station on the sundeck with a barbecue grill and pizza oven for casual al fresco meals.

Builder : Benetti Length : 49.9m Designers : RWD , Pierluigi Ausonio

Legasea belongs to the shipyard's B.Now series and was delivered in 2023. Her design is characterised by an open-air, 36-square-metre beach club between the main deck aft and the swim platform, with an infinity swimming pool that sits between the two levels. Connection with the outdoors is further encouraged with her sundeck, designed with an infinity pool, a hot tub and a lounge area. Indoors, the yacht's airy, open-plan layout is arranged with a "voluminous" main saloon and formal dining area. Accommodation is across five cabins.

World's first hydrogen superyacht linked to Bill Gates hits high seas

  • This 'mothership' superyacht must store its hydrogen fuel at -423.4 Fahrenheit
  • Gates is reportedly selling a 224-ft 'shadow vessel' that pairs with the superyacht
  • READ MORE:  Hydrogen-powered plane takes to the skies over UK for first time

The world's first hydrogen gas fuel-cell superyacht, long rumored to have been commissioned by billionaire Microsoft founder  Bill Gates , is now officially for sale.

Dubbed Project 821, the 390-foot (119-meter) superyacht is designed to run on 'green' hydrogen — although to be stored as a liquid, the gas must be cryogenically stored at -423.4 degrees Fahrenheit in painstakingly designed, double-walled tanks.

Dutch  shipbuilder Feadship said the launch of this approximately $646 million vessel on May 4th at their Amsterdam shipyard sees the yachting world 'forever changed.'

The ostensibly ecologically friendly superyacht has taken over five years to construct from design to completion, with custom additions for the final buyer yet to be made.

While a spate of news reports in 2020 leaked that Feadship and design firm Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design had been commissioned by the billionaire to construct this hydrogen-powered eco-yacht, details verifying the Gates deal remained elusive.

As one yacht industry trade publication knowingly put it at the time, 'While Sinot has denied Gates is building the concept, it is understood that Gates is in talks to build a new superyacht with an unknown yard.'

That trade publication, BOAT International , published a statement from Sinot denying any official agreement with Gates for the luxury boat project.

Responding to reports in the Guardian and the Sunday Telegraph, Sinot said, 'Various articles have appeared in international media stating that Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design sold its concept Aqua to Mr. Bill Gates.'

'These articles are factually incorrect.'

Feadship, however, only declined to comment entirely, telling MegaYacht News that it 'does not comment on its order book.'

And this month, news broke on financial news site Benzinga that Gates intended to sell his ownership of an unknown superyacht as well as his $25 million yacht, the Wayfinder: a 224-foot catamaran-style boat built by famed shipbuilder Astilleros Armon.

The Wayfinder, according to Benzinga , was 'designed as a shadow vessel, typically accompanying a larger mothership, which until recently, was not disclosed.'

The site, which covers stock market trades and other business news, indicated that this mothership was, in fact, Feadship's new hydrogen superyacht, Project 821.

Unlike traditional yachts that rely on diesel engines or other fossil fuel-based means of propulsion, hydrogen fuel-cell yachts use hydrogen as their primary fuel source.

Hydrogen gas (H2) reacts with oxygen (O2) gas in the fuel cell, producing nothing but pure electricity and pure water: H2O.

'The aim has been to develop a new, clean technology not just for this project, but for the world,' Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship's director and CEO, said.

The company added that the size of the yacht made it a good candidate for exploring the feasibility of a pure green hydrogen-powered fuel-cell system.

The ship's liquid hydrogen fuel requires approximately 8-10 times more storage space than traditional diesel fuel for an equivalent amount of energy, Feadship said.

All that fuel tank space, alongside the 16 fuel-cell energy converters themselves, plus the needed switchboard connection for the DC electrical grid, and a set of water-vapor emission vent stacks, added 13 feet to the ship's original specs.

'For those captivated by cutting-edge innovations,' Feadship said in a statement, 'this yacht presents an opportunity for potential acquisition as it showcases the pinnacle of modern technological advancements.'

The company pitched the high-priced luxury vessel as an investment in the sustainably technology's future, like a glamorous R&D project.

'Investing in the required technology is necessary to make the transition away from fossil fuel,' Feadship said, 'and hydrogen is one of the most efficient and cleanest options.'

But, environmentally conscious amenities aside, Project 821 does also serve its elite market of wealthy seafarers with a variety of 'superyacht' prerequisites.

The ship has five decks above the waterline and two below sea level.

It has 14 balconies, seven fold-out platforms, a pool, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a home gym, pantry, and two offices each with a fireplace.

The ship also comes with space for its owner to stock a full library.

According to Feadship, the boat's power and food stores allow for an 'entire week’s worth of silent operation at anchor or [briefly] navigating emission-free at 10 knots while leaving harbors or cruising in protected marine zones.'

'It creates, in essence, a secluded four-level townhouse-by-the sea,' the firm boasted in their press release, 'within the much larger yacht.'

British RWD Studio, rather than Sinot, was reportedly responsible for crafting Project 821 ship-exterior and interior décor, deploying marble, rattan, taupe eucalyptus and limed oak to create, in Feadship's words, 'a luxe coastal vibe.'

When pressed for comment this year, a Feadship spokesperson reiterated that it would not be disclosing who had originally commissioned the eco-superyacht, nor who would ultimately buy the ship.

'Feadship does not share any information about owners and prices,' the firm said, 'whether it is a 19-meter yacht from the 1960s or a 119-meter yacht from the 21st century.'
