If you’re in the market to purchase a new or used yacht, you’ll eventually need to have a yacht survey performed.

Yacht Survey Services

If you choose to go with a brand new yacht, you may not necessarily need a full survey done — but if you’re considering buying a used yacht, you will likely be required to have a yacht survey done for financing or insurance purposes. In fact, in many cases, banks and insurance providers won’t even consider your application without a thorough inspection performed by professionals.Conducting a professional yacht survey will help you determine the true value of the boat and what (if any) repairs are necessary to get the boat into its best operating condition. You should never rely on a survey provided by a previous owner, even if it was done recently. The boat may still have suffered unnoticeable damage that can only be detected by a trained professional.

Condition and Value (C&V) Surveys

Condition and Value or C&V surveys are the most common type of yacht survey performed when buying a used boat, and are sometimes referred to as “pre-purchase surveys.” Whether a survey is required by your lender or not, it’s always a good idea to get one done prior to purchasing any used boat.

A C&V survey covers everything from the boat’s hull and structures to its systems. These comprehensive inspections essentially include the entire yacht and its propulsion systems. However, in cases of some very large, expensive boats, a separate engine survey is sometimes needed. Also, if you’re purchasing a large sailboat you may be required to have additional rigging surveys done prior to the sale.

This type of survey requires the boat to be hauled out of the water in order to properly inspect its hull and underwater gear. A surveyor will check the hull and deck using a moisture meter and a hammer sounding method to determine if any voids or delamination are present. Any areas in the core of the boat that may become susceptible to rot or softening can also be uncovered during the inspection. This will prevent any surprising and costly repairs post-sale.

Engine Surveys

You will require an engine survey for a boat with a particularly expensive or complex engine system or one that has neglected regular maintenance. Engine surveys make sure the propulsion and generator engines on your boat are in proper operational order.

These typically include a thorough inspection of controls, electrical, cooling, and exhaust systems, as well as engine mounts. The surveyor will also check the temperature of the boat’s compression, engine, and exhaust. Typically, oil samples will also be taken and tested.

Rigging Surveys

Whether a rigging survey is necessary depends on the age of the rig, its prior use, and its intended purpose. Red flags that indicate you should get a rigging survey conducted on your boat include a rig that is older than 10 years, visibly frayed stays, cracked swages, weeping chain-plates, and bottomed out turnbuckles. You will also require a rigging survey if you intend to race your boat or use it offshore.

This type of survey examines the condition of your sailboat's mast and boom as well as the associated rigging. During the process, a surveyor will perform inspections of all attachment points, welds, standing and running rigging, as well as the mast step.

Other Types of Yacht Surveys

Appraisal surveys.

There are times when it’s necessary to establish the monetary value of your boat. Appraisal surveys can be performed to approximate a boat’s true value to be presented in cases of court or estate settlements. In some cases, a bank or a lender may require an appraisal survey prior to financing approval.

Damage Surveys

If your boat suffers damage during a storm or an accident, your insurance company may require an overview of the damages and an approximate cost of repairs. A damage survey is performed to evaluate the extent of harm and estimate what it will cost to get your boat back in working order.

New Yacht Surveys

Some especially large and expensive yachts require a new yacht survey, which is generally performed for custom-built models. These surveys can take place over a span of time, while the surveyor pays multiple visits to the manufacturer during the time that the boat is being constructed.

Consulting Services

Whether you are new to boating or an experienced sailor, looking to move up or to downsize, ready to tackle a full refit or find a true turn-key boat, we can help you navigate the many choices needed to find the right fit for your needs.

broward yacht survey

Originally from Long Beach NY, now living in Delray Beach FL, being on or near the water has always been a constant for me. As much as I love to sail, paddle or row, there’s much to be said for opening up the throttle and powering your way home after a day on the water.  I’ve owned more boats than cars, each design representing a set of capabilities and compromises to match the time and budget available.   I’ve stripped, fared, and barrier coated bottoms, repaired and replaced rudders, converted steering from wheel to tiller, added traveler, furling and single line reef systems, upgraded electrical and plumbing systems, and of course, had to replace head and holding tanks systems.  Knowing what you are getting into beforehand is the key.

Our Services

Pre-purchase and condition and value survey.

A vessel walk-through is offered to clients who are interested in purchasing a boat but live too far away to perform an initial inspection without incurring significant travel expenses.  Evaluation services are meant to help determine if the boat’s condition meets expectations before heading into contract negotiations.  Get started .

Insurance Condition and Value Survey

If you are thinking about donating your boat to charity, or if you need to have your vessel appraised for other financial considerations, a vessel appraisal may be the document you need to satisfy IRS or other financial reporting requirements.  Similar in scope to an insurance survey, there is no requirement for sea trials.  Get started .

Marine Survey FAQs

  • Whenever possible the survey should be completed in one day, including haul out and sea trials.
  • Boats over 45 feet in length may need to have the survey split over two days.

The survey report will be delivered within 48 – 72 hours  depending upon the size and complexity of the vessel.

  • The owner of the boat, or the owner’s broker if a pre-purchase survey, usually coordinates the survey schedule between the buyer, the surveyor and the yard where the haul out will take place.
  • Ideally all parties will be present for the survey, however in some cases the owner and/or buyer may not be able to attend the entire day.
  • The vessel’s state registration and if applicable, USCG Certificate of Documentation should be on board.
  • All interior spaces should be accessible for inspection; cabins, lockers, drawers, and storage areas should be free of personal belongings, only those items conveyed with the sale should be on board.
  • Fuel, water, power must be available in order to test on-board systems.
  • The vessel should be equipped to meet USCG safety requirements during sea trials.
  • Engine(s) will be visually inspected prior to sea trials, checking fluid levels, hoses, belts, hour meters and electrical connections.
  • Engine(s) and generator(s) will be run during sea trials to test operations at idle, while cruising and under wide open throttle.
  • Oil samples can be taken and sent out for analysis if requested.
  • Spars, furling systems and standing rigging are visually inspected to “deck level”.
  • Swaged fittings will be examined for signs of corrosion, penetrating die will not be used on standing rigging while the mast is up.
  • Running rigging will be inspected and operated during sea trials to the extent that wind and sea conditions permit.
  • Survey reports will be provided via e-mail within 48 hours of completion of the survey unless otherwise agreed during the initial consultation.
  • Call to discuss your requirements and make sure we offer the services you need, when you need them.
  • Complete the contact form and be sure to include the best time and method to reach you.
  • Review the work order we send to you, make sure it has all of the services you need with the agreed upon date and fee.
  • Electronically sign and you’re on the schedule.
  • Keep in touch if changes have to be made to the schedule.

The cost of a survey has traditionally been based on a “per foot basis”.  There are many other variables that come into play which can drive that per foot cost up or down, such as the type of  survey, size and complexity of the boat.  For example a 20 foot Bay Boat with a single outboard is much less complex than a 44 foot Express Cruiser with twin inboard diesel engines, and a 38 foot monohull sailboat is less complex than the same length catamaran.

Specialized services such as, engine oil analysis, specialized engine surveys, rigging surveys, corrosion surveys,  infrared thermography and ultrasound would add to the complexity and cost of the survey.  These services may be provided separately, billed at a fixed fee or at an hourly rate, or be packaged with the quote for a pre-purchase survey if needed.

Travel charges may also be a factor if overnight accommodations, ferries or flights are involved.

Knowing what to expect ahead of time is key; it starts with a call, a discussion and a quote based on your needs.

Let's talk about your requirements

Thermal Imaging & Inspection

A&L MARINE SURVEYORS, LLC. survey and inspection services are available to both commercial and private entities throughout the state of Florida, from Tampa to Fort Lauderdale and surrounding areas of Nothwest, Northeast, Central and South Florida. Below is an explanation of the various marine Thermal Imaging & Inspection performed, the types of boats inspected, and what each inspection entails.

AL MARINE SURVEYORS, LLC. Thermal Imaging

The tool used for thermal imaging is the thermographic camera, which is similar in appearance and operation of a portable digital video camera. I prefer using the Flir® brand infrared cameras. Flir® was recently purchased by internationally known Teledyne and is now labeled FLIR-TELEDYNE. The infrared camera works by sensing electromagnetic waves within the light spectrum wavelength between approximately 0.9 and 14 micrometers (visible light that can be seen by the human eye is between .4 – .75 micrometers).

A special lens on the infrared camera focuses the infrared light emitted by all objects in view.

The focused light is scanned by a phased array of infrared detector elements. The detector elements create a very detailed temperature pattern called a thermogram. It only takes about one-thirtieth of a second for the detector array to obtain the temperature information to make the thermogram.

This information is obtained from several thousand points in the field of view of view of the detector array. The thermogram created by the detector elements is translated into electric impulses.

The impulses are sent to a signal processing unit. The signal processing unit is a circuit board with a dedicated chip that translates the information from the elements into data for the display.

I only use Flir® brand high-definition professional grade infrared thermal cameras in my marine surveys, engine surveys, and inspections. My cameras are calibrated yearly, infrared thermal imaging cameras with a minimum of 320 x 240 pixels with an image frequency of 60Hz. They can detect a minimum of 43,200 individual temperature shots per digital or video image. The minimal thermal range of the cameras I use are between -4 degrees Fahrenheit – 1,202 degrees Fahrenheit (-20 degrees Celsius – 650 degrees Celsius) which means I can see thermal anomalies in cold temperatures (such as freon hoses in marine air conditioning systems and refrigeration systems) and in extremely hot temperatures (such as overheating turbochargers and overheating exhaust manifolds in engines).

There are numerous benefits to thermal imaging in many industries. Specifically in the marine industry some of the advantages are:

  • No contact is needed. This keeps the user out of danger.
  • It is two-dimensional. Thermographic temperatures can be measured at one point or a hundred or more points on a single thermographic image.
  • It is real time. It allows fast scanning and recording of stationary targets. Objects cannot escape their own radiation.
  • Thermal patterns can be seen. This helps significantly reduce the time and money spent on a technician or mechanic that would have to spend hours to disassemble and troubleshoot a component or go through miles of wiring on a boat or yacht to find the problem. The thermographic image can find the temperature anomaly quickly.
  • Enhances the marine survey report. If desired, thermal imaging can be included in the survey report on components such as engines, transmissions, electrical equipment, electronic devices, tanks, and hulls to look for heat anomalies that can determine if malfunctioning components, leaks, previous fiberglass repairs or delamination exist within the vessel.

I had a pre-purchase survey haulout scheduled at Broward Marine for next Tuesday. Arrangements were made on Friday afternoon with all paperwork signed and sent. Client called in his credit card to finalize confirmation. Email came from the yard late Friday afternoon changing the date for launch. Client agreed by email to their change. I went to Broward this morning and was told they gave away our launch date. They said we weren't confirmed because we didn't send in the payment. I told them the client gave credit card info over the phone, I was in on the conference call, and he wrote the numbers down. He said it wasn't in the computer. He took the credit card information but didn't put it in the computer so it wasn't confirmed. This morning, the paper with the credit card information was still on his desk. They would call me with a new launch date. By the time he called back, he said they gave away the haul date too. Meanwhile, buyer had plane tickets, surveyors scheduled for 2 days, and our dates at this point weren't flexible for haulout. I don't think I've ever posted a slam against anyone in the marine industry on a forum. But, not only did they totally screw up, they never apologized or admitted fault. The line stayed "the credit card information wasn't in the computer so you weren't confirmed." They didn't put it in but had all the paperwork emailed including the credit card sheet that said the credit card information was in their file. We didn't want to go upriver, but Lauderdale Marine Center always takes nice care of me and my clients, even helping me out on short notice. I suspect Broward had bigger fish to fry, or if they were that rude and incompetent, glad they're not hauling my boat. Judy

Not surprising based on their website. Links don't work and when they do you don't learn much more than that they want to launch a timeshare yacht business and build superyachts.

Brutal honesty with regards to business practices and ethics can be difficult to discuss but in the long run it saves headaches and BS. Thanks for the heads up.
My intention really is to provide "helpful information." With nearly 1,000 YF posts and 20 years in the business, I have had opportunity to "vent," but this was such a black and white mistake on their part with no mea culpa, I decided to do my first negative report. It was a total disregard for my Buyer, Seller, and the 2 surveyors all who had their schedules dependent upon the Broward Shipyard haulout and Broward's commitment both verbal and in writing. An apology or effort to try to come up with a solution (like talking to the yachts that at the last minute replaced our designated times to check their flexibility?) would have gone far and perhaps prevented my distrust of what might have really happened, which I suspect was a bigger fish than my 63 footer. Thanks for the support! Judy
Did you escalate it to the highest ranking person there? General Manager? Owner? Whomever?

I'm the sales director at Broward Shipyard. As with all incidents, there are 2 sides to every story. Ms.Waldman is correct in stating that we had the owner's credit card information on hand, but what she leaves out of the story is that not only do we need this information, we need the owner's confirmation as to time and date before we secure them a position on our schedule. Our yard was extremely busy during that time, and we were filling up quickly every day. By the time the owner confirmed, the time slot was filled. Ms. Waldman became upset when informed, and unleashed a profanity laced response to us. At no time were we rude in any way. Saying that we were more interested in "bigger fish to fry" is erroneous; she has brought us other boats of the same size before and we have accommodated her, as evidenced by the fact that she returned to us for another survey. We service all sizes of vessels if we have room to accommodate them as evidenced by how busy we are and how many repeat customers we have. We treat all customers with honesty and respect. We apologize for any cross communication, as we always try to accommodate all of our customers in the best way possible.

Well, he certainly skirted around the issue and made it lean towards the clients fault, he failed to actually address the specific issues in JW's. post.
C'mon, Pete, you should have let sleeping dogs lie. I didn't respond to Olderboater's post at the time because I didn't want to name names or keep the thread active. Do I need to post the emails confirming what I originally posted? Do I need to send a note to the client and ask him to substantiate my original post? Ok, one email copy and paste: "Hi Lenora & Pete —The attached papers should take care of what we need to confirm our haulout for Dec 13 at 10:00, overnight stay on the hard, and launch on Dec. 14th at 12:30.If there are any other papers that can’t be signed at haulout on the 13th, please let me know which ones. Thanks so much!!" And of course the papers were attached. For anyone that knows me, if I unleashed profanities, it is really making a statement of how unjustly I must have felt my client was being treated. Pete, my suggestion would be to bow out of this gracefully. Maybe I'll even give Broward another shot and then I can post how cooperative you were on rebound. Maybe... Judy

Well, I suspect from Judy's last post she might have used a profanity, but, if she did, then I'm sure most would have used more and worse. I might have even been pushed to one and I know my wife would have unleashed many. As a businessman, here's what I read in Pete's post. Still, no apology, no acknowledgement that they might have erred or statement that he's really sorry about the communications issue. The "apologize" in the last sentence comes across as rather empty. I see someone pissed that his business was called out publicly, rightfully or wrongfully. However, I'd suggest he go to YELP and Google reviews and see how some handle such. If he worked for me, he'd be reprimanded for his response, regardless of how Judy did or didn't behave and regardless of who was right or wrong. My guess is his emails to you, Carl, were in anger about the post. I will say this also. I don't like blasting companies online and generally don't like posts like Judy's. However, I feel certain that had Broward made a sincere apology for the entire situation prior to heer post, it would have never been made. I would hope someone above the sales director in Broward, with perhaps better judgement on handling customer disagreements, becomes aware of this incident. We all screw up. We all get accused of screwing up when we honestly feel we did nothing wrong. Ultimately we're not judged on how we handle things when they all go right but how we handle things when they go wrong. I've had marinas that lost our long made reservations. Most have responded appropriately and we wouldn't hesitate to return. Some even made us like them better in the process. Your response should be composed in a way we feel better toward you, not worse, although I know many prefer to just attack harder. The first sentence told me trouble was ahead in the "two sides to every incident." It should have instead read, "I'm very sorry for the problems you had. It's definitely not the way we do business. Now that we've all calmed down I would like you to call me and we can discuss how to repair the damage done and how to avoid such problems in the future. This is the first time I've had to respond to a problem like this and I want to insure I don't have to again." Right or wrong, I wouldn't have gone any further discussing the details online.
As always, well said OB.

Having the pleasure of knowing Judy both professionally and personally, I submit that any profanity was delivered in a “lady-like” fashion, was succinct, and was well deserved! Kinda like when someone you know, who would never, ever use the F-bomb, and does - and then the room goes very, very silent. . . Yeah. THAT’s the Judy I know!! Bravo Zulu Judy!

8,000 women a month got abortion pills despite their states’ restrictions, survey indicates

Thousands of women in states with abortion bans and restrictions are receiving abortion pills in the mail from states that have laws protecting prescribers, a new report shows.

Tuesday’s release of the #WeCount survey shows about 8,000 women a month in states that severely restrict abortion or place limits on having one through telehealth were getting the pills by mail by the end of 2023, the first time a number has been put on how often the medical system workaround is being used. The research was conducted for the Society of Family Planning, which supports abortion rights.

An additional 8,000 women in states without bans or major restrictions on telehealth abortion were receiving pills each month through virtual appointments, the study showed.

In all, the survey counted about 90,000 monthly surgical or medication abortions offered by medical providers in 2023, higher than the previous year. Another study recently found that close to two-thirds of the total use pills.

The group found that by December 2023, providers in states with the protections were prescribing pills to about 6,000 women a month in states where abortion was banned at all stages of pregnancy or once cardiac activity can be detected — about six weeks, often before women realize they’re pregnant. The prescriptions also were going to about 2,000 women a month in states where the local laws limit abortion pill prescriptions by telemedicine.

“People ... are using the various mechanisms to get pills that are out there,” Drexel University law professor David Cohen said. This “is not surprising based on what we know throughout human history and across the world: People will find a way to terminate pregnancies they don’t want.”

Medication abortions typically involve a combination two drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol. The rise of these pills is one reason total abortion numbers increased even after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

A Pew Research Center poll conducted in April found that Americans are substantially more likely to say that medication abortion should be legal, rather than illegal, in their state. According to the poll, which didn’t look at laws protecting prescribers, more than half of U.S. adults think medication abortion should be legal in their state, a fifth of them say it should be illegal, and about a quarter say they aren’t sure.

After Roe was overturned, abortion bans took effect in most Republican-controlled states. Fourteen states now prohibit it with few exceptions, while three others bar it after about six weeks of pregnancy.

But many Democratic-controlled states went the opposite way. They’ve adopted laws intended to protect people in their states from investigations involving abortion-related crimes by authorities in other states. By the end of last year, five of those states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont and Washington — had such protections in place specifically to cover abortion pill prescriptions by telemedicine.

“If a Colorado provider provides telehealth care to a patient who’s in Texas, Colorado will not participate in any Texas criminal action or civil lawsuit,” Cohen said. “Colorado says: ‘The care that was provided in our state was legal. It follows our laws because the provider was in our state.’”

Wendy Stark, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, called the shield law there “a critical win for abortion access in our state.”

James Bopp Jr., general counsel for the National Right to Life Committee, said the law where the abortion takes place — not where the prescriber is located — should apply in pill-by-telemedicine abortions. That’s the way it is with other laws, he said.

But unlike many other aspects of abortion policy, this issue hasn’t been tested in court yet.

Bopp said that the only way to challenge a shield law in court would be for a prosecutor in a state with a ban to charge an out-of-state prescriber with providing an illegal abortion.

“It’ll probably occur, and we’ll get a legal challenge,” Bopp said.

Researchers note that before the shield laws took effect, people were obtaining abortion pills from sources outside the formal medical system, but it’s not clear exactly how many.

Alison Norris, an epidemiologist at Ohio State University and a lead researcher on the #WeCount report, said the group is not breaking down how many pills were shipped to each state with a ban “to maintain the highest level of protection for individuals receiving that care and providers providing that care.”

Dr. Rebecca Gomperts, director of Aid Access, an abortion pill supplier working with U.S. providers, said having more shield laws will make the health care system more resilient.

“They’re extremely important because they make doctors and providers ... feel safe and protected,” said Gomperts, whose organization’s numbers were included in the #WeCount report. “I hope what we will see in the end is that all the states that are not banning abortion will adopt shield laws.”

New Brunswickers urged to help protect Bay of Fundy by taking part in DFO survey

The results will be included in a final marine conservation plan.

Roberta Clowater of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society is urging New Brunswickers to make their voices heard about a plan to preserve the Bay of Fundy — part of the federal government's promise to protect 30 per cent of Canada's oceans by 2030.

Clowater, executive director of the New Brunswick chapter of the non-profit conservation group, hopes people will take part in the survey and show Ottawa there is public support for legally protecting the waters of the Bay of Fundy and the Scotian Shelf.

The survey results will contribute to a plan in which parts of the Bay of Fundy would be designated as marine protected areas — a legal boundary that permits some activities in the area and prohibits others. In these protected areas, lobster fishing would still be permitted, but drilling, mining, digging, dredging and other harmful activities wouldn't, said Clowater.

"Participants could have a big influence just on making sure that areas get protected, that these areas stay strong and that we actually get protected areas in all of these parts of the Bay of Fundy," she said.

"This is the only way it'll actually happen — if they know that there's public support. That's what the decision-makers need to know when they go out to public consultation."

Woman with above shoulder length hair, wearing purple shirt, smiling at camera with a bush in the background.

The survey is a public engagement effort by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. The results will be included in a final marine conservation plan, according to the survey  w ebsite .

The plan  identifies six proposed conversation sites on the New Brunswick side of the Bay of Fundy, including:

Chignecto Bay, which includes Shepody national wildlife area, Johnson's Mills protected natural area, Hopewell Rocks and the Grindstone Island nature preserve.

Salmon Rivers, from the outflow of the Big Salmon River to Matthews Head in Fundy National Park; the site includes outflows of the Big Salmon River and Little Salmon.

Horse mussel aggregations in the Bay of Fundy between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

West Isles and passages off southwest New Brunswick, also known as the Fundy Isles.

Long Eddy, off the northern tip of Grand Manan.

South Grand Manan.

The survey is open to public participation until June 29. Clowater says a final plan is expected in December.

A magic moment in time

Matthew Abbott, marine conservation director and Fundy baykeeper with the Conservation Council of New Brunswick, welcomes the opportunity for public input and says the key ecological areas are represented well in both the survey and the current plan.

"I think the survey is a great tool," he said.

Man, with beard, wearing hat, sunglasses, and life jacket, looking at camera with neutral expression.

"It's one of the tools an agency like the DFO can use to gather information from the public. It's relatively quick and it helps to better understand public priorities and concerns and also of both priority areas and values, like, what they want to see conserved and why they care about the Bay of Fundy or the Scotian Shelf."

Abbott also sees the survey as a way for the public, through written comments, to share their expertise.

"The current plan didn't come out of the blue," he said.

"It was based on years of scientific research and discussion with folks who study the ocean, who work on the ocean. It's really important to get public feedback because there's expertise everywhere in our community."

  • Mi'kmaq and Wolastoqiyik sign declaration to protect Big Salmon River
  • Five years of environmental research into Saint John's ocean ecosystem now public

Clowater agrees and says this is a "magic moment" in time and hopes the public doesn't miss it.

"The worst thing that could happen is if they don't hear an awful lot of input from the public and they'll say, 'Well, why did we even go out and ask?'" she said. "We really want people to get out there and support these areas and if they have local knowledge about these areas ... That's gold, and information that DFO can use to show not only does the public support it, but they have a lot of local knowledge that's really valuable to what happens next with these areas."

Fort Lauderdale Marine Insurance Evaluation Surveys

As with a car, anytime a vessel is purchased that will be financed with a bank or other financial institution, it must be deemed worth more than the amount that will be financed. This is to protect the financial investment of the lender. The surveyor will go over the yacht with a fine-tooth comb and asses and evaluate all of the systems. This gives everyone involved a better understanding of its true value. Simex Marine Surveyors are trusted by many mariners to provide their needed marine surveys in South Florida.

Yacht Damage Evaluation Surveys in South Florida

Few things can hurt a vessel owner more than seeing his beloved boat damaged and looking not quite up to snuff. It hurts the heart. It’s like seeing a family member after an accident. It’s quite important that you get in touch with your insurance company immediately. You will also be required to get the damage evaluated. Simex Marine Surveyors works with insurance companies for damage surveys.
