Italy seeks Russian oligarch whose seized yachts disappeared from Sardinia

Dmitry Mazepin’s vessels, both called Aldabra, went missing within weeks of each other last summer

 • Russia-Ukraine war – latest news updates

Italian authorities are on the hunt for a Russian oligarch after two of his luxury yachts that were seized under EU sanctions mysteriously disappeared from a port in Sardinia.

A public notice informing Dmitry Mazepin, the billionaire owner of a mineral fertiliser company, of the penalties against him over the alleged illegal removal of the vessels has been issued by the town hall of Forte dei Marmi, the Tuscan coastal resort where the oligarch owns a home.

The yachts, both called Aldabra but featuring maritime flags of two different countries, went missing from the Sardinian port of Olbia within weeks of each other last summer.

They were seized last March after Mazepin, who is the father of the former Formula One driver Nikita Mazepin, was named on the sanctions list a few weeks after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine .

It is the first case in Italy of a Russian with assets frozen in the country who has managed to dodge EU sanctions.

An investigation led by Olbia’s finance police found that the first vessel, said to be worth between €700,000 and €1m (between £613,000 and £876,000), left Olbia in June and made a stopover at the small port of Bizerte in Tunisia.

The second yacht is known to have left Olbia for Savona, a port in the northern Italian region of Liguria, before heading to Turkey. The current whereabouts of the yachts and their owner is unknown.

Police said Mazepin hired a foreign company, which in turn hired a Sardinian captain to move the yachts away from Italy .

The intermediary company and captain have both been hit with fines of up to €500,000. Mazepin faces the same penalties.

A police source said that he is fiscally resident in Forte dei Marmi, a popular destination for Russian oligarchs before the war in Ukraine, as he owns a villa in the town, hence why the notice was issued there.

A villa in Sardinia owned by Mazepin is also among the Russian-owned assets frozen across the island. Mazepin bought the villa, called Rocky Ram, from Carlo De Benedetti, an Italian businessman and former owner of La Repubblica newspaper.

Nikita Mazepin's Family Yacht Vanished After Being Seized in Italy

The $700,000 yacht was seized by italian authorities, before it mysteriously vanished from its dock at the olbia port..

A photo of Nikita Mazepin in his Haas gear.

After Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, global leaders around the world wanted to find a way to pressure president Putin and halt his attacks. Politicians unveiled sanctions including bans on Russian oil , freezing overseas assets for high-profile individuals, and even seizing yachts belonging to Russia’s super-rich .

Since March, Russian private yachts that dock in ports around the world risk being seized and sold off in an attempt to encourage the country’s rich and powerful to pressure Putin into ending his assaults. So far, we can’t be sure if it’s a tactic that’s working.

But, it has meant that ships owned by Russian oligarch and former KGB operative Sergei Chemezov, businessman Alexei Mordashov and maybe even Putin himself have so far been seized by global powers.

Now, our favorite awful F1 driver and oligarch son, Nikita Mazepin , has had his family’s luxury liner seized in Italy. But, there’s a twist in this tale, as the boat has vanished!

A photo of Nikita Mazepin sat on the wheel of a Haas F1 car.

According to The Guardian , the 22-meter long Aldabra was owned by Nikita Mazepin’s father, Dmitry Mazepin – the billionaire owner of mineral fertilizer Uralkali, which sponsored the Haas F1 team in 2021. The Guardian reports:

“The vessel, said to be worth between €700,000 ($743,000) and €1m, was docked at Olbia port and seized in March when Mazepin was named on the sanctions list in the weeks following the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “It remained there until June, when the yacht disappeared hours before it was officially confirmed as belonging to Mazepin.”

Presumably, they were able to confirm the ship as belonging to the Mazepins as “Nikita Woz Ere” was scrawled on the dock after the ship vanished. But, what happened to the ship next?

According to police in Italy, Dmitry Mazepin hired a foreign company, which then appointed a Sardinian captain to sail the yacht out of Italy. Once it left Italian waters, the ship reportedly made a stopover at the small port of Biserta in Tunisia. After that, its whereabouts become unknown.

The Mazepins also own a luxury villa in Sardinia, which has also been seized by the authorities. Its whereabouts, however, remain known.

The Guardian reports that it’s the first case of a Russian with assets frozen in Italy managing to dodge the EU sanctions. If the ship is ever recovered, Mazepin, the company he hired to move the ship, and the Sardinian captain will all face fines of up to €500,000 ($531,000) for “illegally removing the vessel from Italy.”

So, if you spot the Aldabra resting in whichever port you winter in, let the Italian authorities know. If you look carefully, you might find Nikita Mazepin’s Formula 1 hopes stashed away somewhere onboard.

Italian authorities are on the hunt for Dmitry Mazepin, after the Russian oligarch's yachts managed to slip two of his seized yachts out of the country.

As the billionaire owner of Russian chemical company Uralchem, Mazepin ended up on an EU sanctions list just weeks after Russia began its invasion of Ukraine last year, as covered by The Guardian. Acting on this, Italian authorities seized two of Mazepin's yachts in the Sardinian port of Olbia. Both yachts were named Aldabra , though wore the flags of two different countries. Last summer, both yachts mysteriously disappeared within weeks of each other, causing authorities to raise the alarm.

It's the first recorded case in Italy of a Russian with frozen assets dodging the wartime EU sanctions. According to earlier reports , one of the yachts managed to escape mere hours before police confirmed it belonged to Mazepin himself. The 22-meter vessel is estimated to be worth €700,000 to €1 million ($760,000 - $1.08 million USD). The current whereabouts of the yachts are unknown, though they are believed to have stopped over in Tunisia and Turkey respectively.

Mazepin reportedly executed the escape at arm's length. Police allege the Russian billionaire hired a foreign company, which then subsequently hired a Sardinian captain to move the yachts. Both the captain and company will be subject to fines up to €500,000 ($543,000 USD), as well as Mazepin himself.

It's not the only issue to befall the Mazepin family in the wake of the Russian invasion. Dmitry Mazepin's son, Nikita Mazepin, famously lost his race seat with the Haas Formula 1 team just prior to the start of the 2022 F1 season.

Italian police also seized Rocky Ram, a villa belonging to the Russian billionaire. Getty Images

Police have issued an official public notice of the charges against Mazepin in the town hall of Forte dei Marmi, a Tuscan coastal resort, where Mazepin was listed as being fiscally resident. In addition to the yachts, authorities have also seized the billionaire's villa in Sardinia. The property, known as Rocky Ram, formerly belonged to Carlo De Benedetti, the Italian former owner of the La Repubblica newspaper.

The situation raises questions over how a seized vessel was able to simply sail out of port. In particular, the fact that both yachts were able to flee in such quick succession suggests security didn't improve in response to the first vessel's departure. In any case, one thing is certain: Mazepin will receive a cold welcome if he returns to Italy any time soon.

Russian oligarch’s yacht Aldabra disappeared from Italy

Sardinia

The yacht was taken off the Italian coast a few hours before her final arrest.

The 22-meter yacht Aldabra of Russian billionaire Dmitry Mazepin disappeared from custody in Sardinia. According to The Guardian, the vessel was last seen on the island in the summer. Aldabra is directly linked to the oligarch Mazepin, the owner of a mineral fertilizer company and the father of former Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin.

The cost of the vessel, according to expert estimates, ranges from 0.7 to 1 million euros. In March, the yacht was arrested in the port of Olbia after the businessman was put on the EU sanctions list. Aldabra had been in Sardinia for several months and disappeared just hours before authorities received official confirmation that it belonged to the Russian billionaire.

“Mazepin knew he was on the list but managed to make the most of the period during which we were working to establish that the boat belonged to him, as we had to investigate the chain of ownership,” said a source at Sardinia’s financial police squad. “We were in the process of confirming [the ownership] when it was taken away.”

The investigation revealed that Mazepin had hired a foreign company, which had arranged with a local captain to transport a yacht from Italy. She was last seen in the port of Bizerte in Tunisia. Aldabra's whereabouts are currently unknown.

Have You Seen Dmitry Mazepin’s Vanishing Yachts, Because Italy Would Love to Know

ADAM ISMAIL Avatar

Last summer, two yachts thought to be owned by Russian fertiliser oligarch and worst-kind-of-sports-parent Dmitry Mazepin disappeared from the port of Olbia off the Italian island of Sardinia. They had been seized in March, pursuant to European Union sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but local officials weren’t able to immediately tie the vessels to their owner. Both boats vanished three months later within days of each other — and suspiciously mere hours before police confirmed they belonged to Mazepin.

Wouldn’t you know the Italian government would really love to speak with the billionaire, according to the latest from the Guardian . This week Mazepin was issued a notice of the roughly $US540,000 ($749,628) he faces in fines by the Forte dei Marmi town hall, where he also owns a house.

The ships — both named Aldabra, presumably to make this case just that little bit more annoying for law enforcement — supposedly went off in different directions. One set sail for Tunisia, while the other headed toward Northern Italy, then Turkey. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

As for how Mazepin arranged the whole thing, Italian officials have an idea about that, too. Courtesy the Guardian :

Police said Mazepin hired a foreign company, which in turn hired a Sardinian captain to move the yachts away from Italy.

That villa was seized too, as it’s slightly more challenging to hide than seafaring craft. I’d love to hear Mazepin’s son, disgraced Formula 1 driver Nikita Mazepin, relate his assuredly noncommittal stance on these matters. Hell, I’d love to hear him say anything at all. His mouth proved to be an endless well of entertainment through the early part of last year and it’s been too long since he opened it near a microphone.

The yacht of the Russian oligarch arrested in Sardinia has disappeared from the port

The 22-meter vessel, which belongs to billionaire Dmitry Mazepin, was last seen on the Italian island in the summer.

The luxurious yacht of the Russian oligarch, which was confiscated as part of EU sanctions, mysteriously disappeared from the port on the Italian island of Sardinia. This is reported by the Guardian.

The 22-meter Aldabra belongs to Dmitry Mazepin , a billionaire, the owner of a company producing mineral fertilizers and the father of a former Formula One pilot -1 Nikita Mazepina .

The vessel, worth between €700,000 (£605,000) and €1 million, was docked in the port of Olbia and confiscated in March when the Mazepina was sanctioned shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

She remained there until June, and a few hours before it was officially confirmed that she belonged to Mazepin, the yacht disappeared.

“Mazepin knew he was on the sanctions list, but managed to make the most of the period, during which we have been working to investigate the chain of ownership and establish whether the boat belongs to him,” said a source at the Sardinian Financial Police.

The interlocutor added that the vessel disappeared precisely during the confirmation of ownership.

The police found out that Mazepin hired a foreign company, which, in turn, turned to a local captain to move the yacht from Italy.

An investigation led by Carlo Lazzari, the commander of Olbia's financial police group, revealed that the yacht stopped in the small port of Biserta in Tunisia, but its current whereabouts are unknown.

The police said that Mazepin, the company that participated in the organization of the transfer and the captain, who claims that he did not know that the vessel belonged to the oligarch, face fines of up to €500,000 for illegally taking the vessel out of Italy.

This is the first case in Italy when a Russian with frozen assets in the country managed to avoid EU sanctions.

According to a source in According to the police, this yacht has not yet left Sardinia, so its movement was clearly planned.

In addition to the yacht, Mazepin's frozen assets also include the Rocky Ram villa in Sardinia. Mazepin bought it from Carlo de Benedetti, an Italian businessman and former owner of La Repubblica newspaper.

An armored car worth €600,000, owned by oligarch Alisher Usmanov, a former shareholder of the Arsenal football club, was also arrested in Sardinia.

Nikita Mazepin's Family Yacht Vanished After Being Seized in Italy

Daddy! Where is my yacht!

After Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, global leaders around the world wanted to find a way to pressure president Putin and halt his attacks. Politicians unveiled sanctions including bans on Russian oil , freezing overseas assets for high-profile individuals, and even seizing yachts belonging to Russia’s super-rich.

Dmitry Mazepin owns Uralkali, which sponsored the Haas F1 team in 2021 and funded Nikita’s drive.

“It remained there until June, when the yacht disappeared hours before it was officially confirmed as belonging to Mazepin.”

aldabra yacht mazepin

A r ussian oligarch’s yacht “mysteriously disappeared” from a port in Sardinia, allegedly arrested as a result of EU sanctions.

The luxurious 22-meter Aldabra belongs to russian billionaire Dmitry Mazepin. The vessel, worth up to €1 million, was docked in the port of Olbia, Italy, and confiscated in March when Mazepin was sanctioned weeks after the start of russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The yacht remained there until June, when it disappeared, a few hours before it was officially confirmed that it belonged to Mazepin.

Mazepin hired a foreign company to move the yacht from Italy. An investigation by the financial police of Olbia revealed that the yacht stopped in the small port of Biserta in Tunisia, but its current location is unknown.

All those involved in the case face fines of up to 500,000 euros for the illegal export of the vessel from Italy.

This is the first case in Italy when a russian with frozen assets in the country managed to avoid EU sanctions.

The Guardian: the yacht of the Russian oligarch Mazepin disappeared in Sardinia

The yacht of Russian oligarch Dmitry Mazepin has gone missing on the Italian island of Sardinia, writes The Guardian. The vessel, arrested in connection with Mazepin's entry into the EU sanctions list, has not been seen since the summer.

The 22-meter Aldabra, worth between €700,000 and €1 million, was moored in the port of the municipality of Olbia and arrested in March, a few weeks after the start of the war. The yacht was there until June and disappeared a few hours before the identity of its owner was officially established. According to police, Mazepin hired a foreign company to take the yacht out of Italy. She, in turn, hired a Sardinian captain who was supposed to be directly involved in transportation.

The commander of the financial police group of Olbia, Carlo Lazzari, conducted an investigation and found out that the yacht stopped in the small port of Bizerte in Tunisia, but where she is now is unknown. Police said Mazepin and the Sardinian captain would be fined up to €500,000 for illegally taking the ship out. The Guardian notes that this is the first case in Italy when a Russian with assets frozen in the country managed to avoid sanctions.

Mazepin is a billionaire and co-owner of the united chemical company Uralchem. He and his son Nikita, a Formula 1 driver, were included in the EU sanctions list on March 9 as Russians "supporting and benefiting from the government of the Russian Federation or providing it with a significant source of income." As the EU authorities specified, sanctions were imposed against businessmen who met with Vladimir Putin on February 24.
