View all yachts for charter

An eye-catching black hull and silver superstructure offers a hint at this superyacht's striking interior. Rich notes of red, black and ochre work in harmony with the luxury yacht's native Australian and Canadian artwork to create spectacular living and entertainment areas. Linking these decks, a hand-carved trio of totem poles stand guard over the glistening black fossil marble stairwell.

Guests can enjoy the full cinema experience at the touch of a button in the sky lounge as black-out blinds fall and a screen unfurls from its hiding place in an elegant chaise longue. An air conditioned gym is available for the restless, with both exercise machines and a selection of free weights. Also on the bridge deck, a circular al fresco dining area is shielded by sliding glass doors, allowing guests to absorb the views on all sides while remaining sheltered from the breeze.

SLIPSTREAM's vast sun deck was designed with every comfort in mind; giant sun pads sit both forward and aft, a glass windbreak fits around the jacuzzi, and an open-air shower and glass-topped bar complete the experience.

With sumptuous accommodation for 12 guests in up to seven cabins, spread across three decks, guests are spoilt for choice. The rich red and black master suite includes an office, his and her bathrooms, walk-in wardrobe, and a beautiful raised observation lounge that allows direct access to the foredeck. The VIP cabin on the bridge deck has some of the best views on board, with natural light spilling from a sliding glass door leading onto the private balcony. Four stylish double cabins are located on the lower deck, two of which can be converted into twin cabins upon request. The gym also converts to a seventh cabin with two pullman berths and en suite shower room, if required.

slipstream yacht position

On board Slipstream with owner Jack Cowin

The Canadian businessman has built a fast-food empire, but has grown to love the slower pace of superyacht life, as he tells Charlotte Hogarth-Jones

Jack Cowin clearly has a keen nose for business. Born in Windsor, Ontario, he left Canada for Australia in 1969, aged 26, with profit in mind, having convinced 30 investors to lend him $10,000 each so that he could establish a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise down under. The original investor got his money back within ten years, and the equity at net book value would be around $25 million today. Cowin now owns Hungry Jack’s, the Burger King franchise in Australia, along with Competitive Foods Australia, a business that includes more than 450 stores along with a food-processing division. He’s also an investor in the Lone Star restaurant chain in Canada and the chairman and largest shareholder in Dominos Pizza Enterprises, an A$7.5 billion market cap company operating 2,700 units across Australia, Japan, and Europe. At the time of going to press, Forbes estimated his net worth as $2.5 billion. It should come as no surprise, then, that Cowin’s first yacht was conceived purely as a great business opportunity, rather than a hobbyist’s fantasy.

“It was in the late 1990s, and I’d become friends with Olympic sailor Denis O’Neil,” Cowin explains. “The Australian dollar had fallen to an all-time low of 49 cents at that time, and so he came to me with a business proposition – he would build a boat in Australia, and then sell it elsewhere in either US dollars or euros, and with the currency exchange we’d make a fortune,” he says. “I didn’t have anything to do with it [the build]. I was just the financier.”

Alas, the golden opportunity wasn’t quite as it had seemed. Most of the parts for the yacht had to be imported from the US, including the engine, and as costs mounted the potential profit shrank. Three years later, in 2001, the yacht – a 43.6-metre beauty named Silver Dream – was finished and freighted to Europe. It attracted an offer within the week. “We weren’t going to get rich from it, but it was a relatively attractive offer,” Cowin admits. “I’d had this  idea that we’d spend a year or two floating around the Mediterranean before we’d find a buyer, but O’Neil said: ‘No. It’s a decent price. Let’s accept it now.’” Cowin, however, couldn’t bear to part with the yacht so soon, and so had no choice but to buy O’Neil out.

“Suddenly, I owned a boat!” he laughs, “with no experience, no nautical culture that some people grow up with, nothing.” His family lived near Lake Erie when he was a young child, but the water was always just “in the background”, he says, and while his father had once bought a small “20-foot runaround”, Cowin had long since left home by then.

What was it, then, that caused this savvy businessman to allow his heart to get  the better of his head? He blames the America’s Cup.

Cowin knew businessman Alan Bond, who owned Australia II , the yacht that won the 1983 cup for the Royal Perth Yacht Club. “We were one of the sponsors and so I got invited to spend a week in the South of France on his boat. That was a whole new experience for me, and I loved it. It was a magnificent boat and I just thought it [the trip] was fantastic. I had that memory until here we are, 15 years later, sitting on a boat in Europe that I’ve just bought and don’t know what to do with.”

Thankfully for Cowin, help was at hand in the form of Phil Stevens, who was working on Kerry Packer’s yacht in Sydney at the time. Today, Stevens captains Cowin’s larger 60-metre yacht Slipstream , while Steve Smith now helms his first boat, but at the time Stevens was the guiding hand that led Silver Dream around the Maldives, the Caribbean and Thailand. “I fell in love with this terrific way of seeing the world and doing it with friends too,” says Cowin.

A sense of freedom obviously appeals to him – in fact, it’s a large part of why business has always appealed. “From aged about 10 I always had little things going… the conventional paper routes, cutting lawns, shovelling snow, that kind of thing. I wanted to have control over my own affairs,” he says.

“My father worked for a big company – Ford – all his life, and what I saw was that when you work for a big corporation, you don’t really have any control. I think that stayed with me.”

Cowin went on to work as a door-to-door salesman selling plants to farms (“the greatest education I ever had”) to go to university, and then did a stint in insurance, before packing up his home and taking his wife and six-month-old baby to Australia to start his new KFC enterprise from scratch.

Today, even in the choppy waters of Covid-19, business is doing well. “We’ve been very fortunate in that the two things that have boomed during this time have been home delivery and drive-through,” he says. It’s a good time to be in fast food, and Cowin has a vision for the future too.

With the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia, he’s set up a company that has raised over A$100 million to build a factory to produce a plant-based meat substitute – called V2 – made from grain legumes. “Our view is that the meat industry is not going to go away,” says Cowin. “But the cow is a very inefficient producer of protein – there will be an estimated 10 billion people in the world by 2050, and we just won’t have the space to be able to operate the existing agricultural system and produce the food required. This will be a lower-cost way of feeding people, and it tastes good too.” In a blind test between the v2 product, made by the company v2food, and real meat, Cowin says he wasn’t able to identify which was which.

“There are companies in the US called Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat, and their values are eye-watering,” says Cowin. “We’re kind of in the beginner stage, but we’ve got products that we think are quite competitive. The initial results show that this is a strong growth area that we’re backing, and hopefully it will continue.”

Clearly, Cowin is a man who knows how to launch and oversee a successful project – be it a burger or a boat – and his businesses span the globe, too. Was building yacht number two as painless as it seems? His answer is  yes – not that he didn’t have his reservations going into it. “ Slipstream was built by a French company called CMN, and they were new to the yacht business. Prior to this they’d only built larger, military vessels.” Cowin was understandably wary of the risk. “I was nervous. Very nervous. Particularly when people said: ‘French? You’re not going to be able to communicate.’ But I can tell you, it was a very pleasant experience.”

More involved with the project than he had been with Silver Dream , Cowin had enjoyed “five years of romance” with yacht number one, and took an active interest in his new project, helped by the fact that the yard was also building the 60-metre Cloud 9 (now Ice Angel ) for  his friend, businessman Brett Blundy, at the same time.

Cowin and his wife Sharon were particularly involved with the interior of Slipstream , incorporating elements such as a 4.5-metre totem pole, a nod to the couple’s Canadian heritage that was carved in British Columbia by a Native American who Sharon had visited. The artist has also designed a totem pole for Buckingham Palace. There’s Aboriginal artwork throughout the yacht too, a nod to Australia, and the design process was “more about fun than practicality”. In the end “it all came together”, says Cowin, “and every time we go on the boat, we’re quite proud of it”.

Not that the couple have spent much time on board alone. “In 20 years, we’ve probably only had the boat to ourselves for a couple of nights,” he says. “Some people probably like the peace and quiet of their own company. But I get off on being around people that I like.” And so, when she’s not being chartered, Slipstream plays host to a whirling carousel of guests, including Cowin’s four children and their 12 grandchildren.

Coronavirus, however, has made them realise that they can’t use the yachts, currently based in Europe, in the same way as if they were based in Australia – it’s too expensive to keep travelling over, and at present, restrictions mean Australians can’t leave the country without special permission anyway. It’s prompted them to bring Silver Dream back to Australia, and Cowin is hopeful that she’ll still host plenty of charter guests too, as the market slowly grows.

Certainly, this once-hesitant owner is now a convert to the yachting lifestyle himself, with two beautiful vessels in his possession and a potential third on the way. “We had a close call at a boat show in the past 12 months,” he says elusively, “but as we progressed closer to getting the contract, coronavirus had just come in, so we just kind of put that on hold. I’m not sure whether I have a new boat left in me, but I may…”

A glossy dark hull and steel grey superstructure makes SLIPSTREAM instantly recognizable on the water. Her sleek profile earnt her a top award at the Showboats Design Awards 2010, and her exterior is perfectly in-keeping with her remarkable interior design.

Interior Design

SLIPSTREAM’s interiors have also won prestigious awards, and it’s not difficult to see why when you step on board. A hand-carved trio of totem poles run through the centre of a black marble stairwell, connecting the yacht’s decks and catching your eye as soon as you enter. This striking feature sets the tone for the rest of the yacht, which borrows inspiration from traditional Canadian and Native American influences. The result is a polished ambience, which is still liveable and relaxed. Winch Design hasn’t shied away from bold reds and dark blacks, all offset by varied textures and rich materials.

Guest Accommodation

Slipstream's interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 7 rooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 15 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Her Owner’s suite is particularly lavish, with a scarlet, black and cream color palette creating a romantic atmosphere. The Owner’s suite includes an office, his and her bathrooms, walk-in wardrobe and a raised observation lounge with access to the foredeck.

Meanwhile, the VIP promises exceptional views, with large windows and a sliding glass door leading onto a private balconette. Four stylish double cabins are located on the lower deck, two of which can be converted into twin cabins for your convenience. The gym also converts to a seventh cabin with two Pullman berths and en suite bathroom, proving once again how versatile and flexible SLIPSTREAM is.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

SLIPSTREAM has an impressive sundeck that offers all the facilities you could want; a large jacuzzi, alfresco dining, a sleek bar, sunpad spread and barbecue. Every aspect has been considered; Glass windbreaks to allow for unobstructed views, an open-air shower and shading beneath the radar arch so charter guests can enjoy their meals out of the glare of the midday sun. The result is a fantastic and well-used space where the entire charter party can gather at all hours.

For movie nights at sea, the yacht’s skylounge can be converted into a cinema suite. At the touch of a button, black-out blinds shield the windows and a screen materializes from its integrated concealment spot in a chaise longue.

The yacht has an excellent gym set-up if you’re looking to keep fit on while on charter. Treadmills and weights overlook the water, providing a soothing setting for working up a sweat. When not in use, the gym can be converted into a seventh cabin for nannies, bodyguards or other supernumerary guests.

Performance & Range

She is built with Aluminium superstructure and Steel hull. She features an ultra-modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion effect and ensure the ultimate comfort throughout your charter vacation. With a cruising speed of 14 knots, a maximum speed of 16 knots and a range of 5,000nm from her 139,000 litre fuel tanks, she is the perfect combination of performance and luxury.

Slipstream knows a thing or two about fun on the water, with an extensive selection of action packed water toys and accessories for you and your guests to enjoy whilst on charter. Principle among these is a sailboat to bring out the explorer in you. In addition there are waterslides letting guests speed from the sun deck to the water in seconds. You'll be loving the huge adrenaline rush as you zip over the water on one of the two Bombardier WaveRunners. If that isn't enough Slipstream also features towable toys, waterskis, scuba diving equipment, wakeboards, kayaks and much more. Slipstream has a 6.7m/22' Nautica Tender to transfer you from ship to shore.

Book your next the Mediterranean luxury yacht charter aboard Slipstream this summer. She is already accepting bookings this winter for cruising in the Caribbean.

With a highly experienced and talented crew of 15, you can be sure that each and every need will be met and exceeded while on board this prestigious motor yacht.

A Superyacht Charter for Spring Break—You Choose Where to Go

The 197-foot nomadic yacht slipstream is ready to cruise the globe at a moment’s notice—with plenty of toys in tow., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

What are the key attributes that make a charter yacht successful? Is it flexibility? Accommodating crew who become an extension of the family? A gargantuan collection of mind-blowing water toys? “All of the above,” says Captain Phil Stevens, one of two rotational captains on board 197-foot Slipstream .

Built at French shipyard CMN in 2009, Slipstream has been a prolific charter yacht over the course of its nine years. There are few places its eye-catching black hull and silver superstructure won’t travel. From the British Virgin Islands to the Baltic, even South America, the yacht cruises where the charters dictate, says Captain Phil. His favored destinations are Croatia and Turkey, along with the Ionian part of Greece. “I would start off in Athens and finish in Venice, passing through the Ionian Islands, Montenegro, and Croatia along the way. It’s so easy, you can always find somewhere to hide. You can lose yourself there,” he enthuses. His passion is contagious, exemplified by his 17.5 years spent in the employ of Slipstream ’s Australian owner, not to mention his multiple clients who have clocked up 10 to 15 repeat charters.

Design Inspiration

Interior and exterior styled by Winch Design , Slipstream possesses many of the hallmarks of Winch’s renowned penmanship, from the carpet motifs that mimic the ceiling panels in most guest areas to the signature skylounge. Furnished in muted cream tones with large black leather armchairs, it doubles up as an indoor cinema; the screen majestically rising from a chaise longue with large panoramic windows blacked out for full effect. From movie nights to Xbox gaming to reviewing the crew’s drone footage of the day’s adventures, guests are treated to far more than a room abounding with comfy sofas and plush furnishings.

Artwork throughout the yacht (curated by Winch) reflects the owner’s international background, with a mix of Aboriginal and North American pieces. Three commissioned totem poles with gods, eagles, bears, and fish soar 15 feet up through the stairwell to the deck above. Carved by Canadian artist Stanley Clifford Hunt from three single pieces of solid cedar, they set the central tone of the yacht, figuratively and literally.

Family Time

At the forefront of Slipstream ’s offering is its positioning as a prized family charter vessel. The yacht’s impressive chest of water toys includes Sea-Doos, standup paddleboards, kayaks, and the highly popular 49-foot-tall waterslide that descends from the sundeck. Along with inflatable platforms, it forms the centerpiece to the enthusiastic crew’s assault course, which they often set up for the more active charter guests. And as a ratified training school, guests can also obtain their jet-ski license during their stay. Whether spending all day tearing across the water at 80 mph, learning to sail the Laser dinghy with Ben (deckhand), or taking wakeboard instruction from Liam (chief officer), it’s not surprising that most guests spend a high proportion of their time in and around the water.

Both Captain Phil and his rotational colleague Captain Steve Osborne are fathers, which means small yet important details, such as mesh screens and safety gates on the top of the stairwells, come as standard. When teamed with a crew of 18 who tend to develop a charismatic rapport with children of all ages, it’s easy to see how family charter guests keep coming back for more.

Relaxation at the Core

Whether advanced or a beginner, taking yoga or Zumba classes on the aft main deck with Tiffany (chief stewardess) or an insanity fitness session with Nick (second officer) is the perfect post-breakfast workout, not least because chef Richard “Tricky” Harrison is somewhat unrivaled in the galley. His protein balls made from dates, lime, coconut, fig, cashew, and pistachios are matched only by the array of freshly baked bread (including gluten-free) and vast menu of homemade smoothies and juices on offer. Family buffets on the bridge deck aft are a popular event, as are themed party nights on the large sundeck, which can be fitted with a glittering disco ball. And Tricky’s cooking lessons often result in  kids’ fairy cake competitions.

Ample opportunities for both indoor and alfresco meals abound, from formal dining in the main saloon, eating in the round on the skylounge’s double lazy Susan table, to the generous sundeck. Plans for a fully retractable sunroof will be realized this winter, along with rain-activated sensors, mood lighting, and side window screens. “It means that sunny meal times and outdoor starlit cinema screenings can continue whatever the weather,” says Captain Phil.

Perhaps the most breathtaking dining option of all, however, takes place on the 6.5-foot swim platform, equipped with a misting system for when it’s exceptionally hot. “It’s a great base, and certainly isn’t restricted to just water sports,” says Captain Phil. “We hang lanterns and fairy lights for extra ambience, and dinner is served for up to six people on the water’s edge.” Once the entire hull has been polished this winter, Slipstream will look pretty fabulous from afar as well.

Room with a View

With sumptuous accommodation for 12 guests in seven cabins spread across three decks, guests are spoilt for choice. This includes two Pullmans unconventionally located in the gym—a popular choice with children—as well as room enough for a nanny when required. The VIP cabin with its private balcony separated from crew-accessible areas by a frosted glass screen provides some of the best views on board, while the master suite, with its high ceilings, private study, and frosted-glass en-suite leads directly to the observation lounge. “This area leads out to the foredeck and is the owner’s wife’s favorite room,” says Captain Phil.

The master suite is also a preferred location to take a massage, either undertaken by Slipstream ’s trained masseuse Tammy or by a shore-based professional. When it comes to capturing the most spectacular horizons, the jury is out on where best to position yourself. According to Captain Phil, it’s on the bridge at 5 am to watch the sunrise. For late starters, however, the sunken sundeck Jacuzzi at 6 pm with a cocktail in hand is pretty hard to beat.

Slipstream is available to charter with Burgess .

SUPERYACHT LIFE

Captain Steve Osborne

Steve Osborne

A chance visit to a friend led landlubber Steve Osborne into a life in yachting – something that he is still passionate about some 20 years later as Captain of the 60 metre yacht Slipstream .

It was after studying Economics at university in Scotland that I had my first taste of yachts. I went down to the South of France to visit a friend who was working for a company doing audio-visual and IT for yachts, and I just inadvertently got started doing day-work on a superyacht – it was completely unrelated to what I had been studying or what I had done previously. I found I just enjoyed the lifestyle, and the South of France was a nice place to be – I’d never been anywhere like it before. Before long I was offered a deckhand position on a yacht that went over to the Caribbean for the winter season. That was me – I was sold on it.

I grew up in southern Africa, in Zambia till the age of 10 and then Botswana until I went to Glasgow in Scotland to study for my degree. I didn’t have a background in sailing, or in fact any boating experience at all before going to France. A lot of people who come into yachting do have background boating experience, but I’m a prime example that you don’t need any of that – the yacht industry and yachting is a passion you can pick up along the way.

Steve Osborne

Almost 20 years after that first taste day-working on yachts, and I am now captain of a 60 metre CMN-built motor yacht called Slipstream . I started on this yacht in 2012 as the chief officer under Captain Phil Stevens when I was in the latter stages of completing my own captain’s qualifications. Once I got my Master’s ticket I went into rotation with Phil. It’s a busy life on Slipstream as we are an extremely popular charter yacht, particularly with families who have children, so the rotation allows me to keep a balance between work and family.

I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years in the industry, with perhaps the biggest being regulatory changes – I spend a lot more of my time doing paperwork these days! But there’s also a lot of delegation I can do and I think I’m quite a good team manager. I’ve got a lot of very good people around me, which makes my job a lot easier.

Steve Osborne

I think crew is the other area I’ve seen evolve over time, and there are a lot more people coming in who have no relevant experience but who want to crew because they’ve heard stories or seen certain TV shows. Indeed, even my 11-year-old daughter recently said to me that she had been watching a well-known reality TV show, and she started asking me about the tips that the crew get after charters! There are a lot of people coming into the superyacht industry with a perception that it’s all just about money, and it can be harder to find the hard-work ethic (because working on a yacht is hard work in reality!) and harder to find people who can live together and all get on in the melting pot of crew quarters. It’s something I think we’ve managed to do pretty well on Slipstream over the past few years.

I think that crew longevity is something that really appeals to charter guests, as repeat guests see the same faces when they come back the following year. They instantly feel comfortable and everything just sort of picks up from when they were on board before. Our record currently is 17 repeat visits!

Steve Osborne

I have had some very inspirational captains along the way who have instilled in me some very good ways of operating – I’ve learnt a lot of good things and I’ve put them into practice. We’re a very close-knit group on Slipstream , very established, and although people do come and go everyone gets along, which is great. There is rank and hierarchy on board but everyone respects each other so it doesn’t have to be enforced. It’s a very happy time, and we hope it’s reflected with the feedback we’ve had from recent charters, which has been very good.

For me personally, I’m so glad I took that trip to France all those years ago. I’ve been fortunate to travel to some amazing places which otherwise I’d have had to pay a fortune to go to myself! We’ve just come back from cruising in Norway which was probably one of my career highlights, being able to go down all the fjords and just the remoteness of it all – you feel very vulnerable. The chance to be able to do that and appreciate all that really highlights one of the fundamental aspects of yachting – that it’s not just about earning the money, it’s the satisfaction of being able to travel to these places, and it’s the satisfaction of creating the ultimate experience for guests, for families and for their children. I enjoy seeing the results of that and seeing people go away really, really happy and saying it was their best holiday ever.

What can still be decided on the final day of the Premier League season?

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 07: Detail view of the Premier League Trophy prior to the Premier League match between West Ham United and Manchester City at London Stadium on August 07, 2022 in London, England. (Photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)

It is the final day of the 2023-24 Premier League season and all 20 clubs will be hoping to end their campaigns on a positive note.

Every game kicks off at 4pm UK time (11am ET; 8am PT) and there is still a lot to be decided — most notably the title and battle for European football.

There are a number of other issues that will be settled on the pitch, with prize money and individual awards up for grabs, as well as the ignominy of historically bad finishing positions to avoid.

Here, The Athletic details what can still be settled as the curtain comes down on another thrilling season.

For the 10th time in the Premier League era (1992-93 onwards), the title will be decided on the final day of the season — with Manchester City and Arsenal the two clubs left fighting to be crowned champions of England.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who are firm favourites to finish victorious, play West Ham United at home and Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal host Everton .

Manchester City will win the title if they beat West Ham. If City draw or lose, they will be champions if Arsenal fail to win.

Arsenal have to beat Everton to stand any chance of a first league triumph since the 2003-04 season. If they do pick up three points against Sean Dyche’s side, then they will win the title if City fail to beat West Ham due to their superior goal difference.

This is the first Premier League season where the title will be decided on the final day and one of Manchester United or Liverpool are not involved. — Will Jeanes (@will_jeanes) May 12, 2024

If Manchester City do win the league, they will become the first club in the 135-year history of the English top flight to be crowned champions in four consecutive seasons.

Death and Distractions: Why winning four titles in a row never happens

slipstream yacht position

It would be Manchester City’s 10th top-flight title overall, with only two of their previous triumphs coming before the 2010s. Arsenal, meanwhile, would move up to 14 if they secure glory this weekend.

slipstream yacht position

If Arsenal do win the title, it will be the first time since the 1988-89 season that the team going into the final day top of the table has not won the league.

The club that triumphed from second place in that season was… Arsenal. They overhauled Liverpool by beating them 2-0 at Anfield in what was effectively a play-off for the title on the final day. Michael Thomas scored in added time to hand the London club the league by virtue of having scored more goals than Liverpool during the campaign (they were tied on points and goal difference).

slipstream yacht position

If Arsenal finish second, they will be the first team to finish as runners-up in back-to-back seasons since Chelsea in 2006-07 and 2007-08.

The European places

England ’s four representatives in next season’s revamped Champions League have already been determined, with Liverpool and Aston Villa joining Arsenal and Manchester City in Europe’s premier club competition.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa will be appearing in the competition for the first time since the 1982-83 season (when it was still called the European Cup).

go-deeper

How the new Champions League format works

Yet qualification for the Europa League and Conference League ( the ‘Europa’ is being dropped from the name of the latter competition from next season ) is still up for grabs.

Two clubs will enter the Europa League and one will go into the Conference League. Tottenham Hotspur , Chelsea, Newcastle United and Manchester United are the clubs in contention and the outcome is dependent on a whole host of permutations, including who wins the FA Cup final.

Below is a handy guide which explains who needs to do what to secure European football next season.

go-deeper

Explaining the race for Europe in the Premier League

The latest available figures show that qualifying for the Europa League will net clubs €3.63million (£3.1m; $3.9m) and reaching the Conference League will earn a windfall of €2.94m (£2.5m; $3.18m).

Who will be relegated?

Sheffield United and Burnley have already been relegated and will play in the Championship next season — and one of Luton Town or Nottingham Forest will join them.

Nottingham Forest, in 17th, are three points clear of Luton and due to their vastly superior goal difference are highly unlikely to go down. Forest play Burnley away and Luton host 14th-placed Fulham .

There would need to be 12-goal swing for Luton to secure another season of Premier League football and given they have only won one game by more than one goal all season, they are almost certainly going to be returning to the Championship .

slipstream yacht position

If, as expected, Luton do go down, then this will be just the second season in the Premier League era where every newly-promoted team has been relegated — after 1997-98 when Bolton Wanderers , Barnsley and Crystal Palace all returned to the second tier at the first time of asking.

Given the value of the broadcast deal enjoyed by the Premier League, relegation is a huge financial blow.

Clubs do receive parachute payments after going down (around £40m in the first season) but, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, their total revenue will drop by more than 50 per cent, which will cost around £100m.

How much prize money do clubs earn?

On paper, teams who have avoided relegation and aren’t challenging for the title or the European spots have very little to play for in their final matches.

However, there are millions of pounds available for finishing just one position in the table higher than you started the day in.

Only Liverpool (third), Aston Villa (fourth), West Ham United (ninth) and Sheffield United (20th) have a guaranteed finishing position, so 16 clubs have, at the very least, a financial motivation to get all three points.

Here is what each finishing position earns, based off last season’s figures. Due to the broadcast deal being the same as the 2022-23 campaign, we can expect these numbers to be very accurate.

None of the 20 clubs still have the chance to record their outright highest-placed finish in the top flight (though Manchester City and Arsenal can both equal theirs).

Who will win the Golden Boot?

Erling Haaland is poised to finish as the Premier League’s top scorer for a second season in a row and win the Golden Boot again.

The Manchester City forward has scored 27 league goals — with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer the second-highest scorer in 2023-24 with 22 goals.

Last season, Haaland scored 36 goals. If he can score three against West Ham, he will be the first player to score 30+ goals in back-to-back Premier League seasons since Blackburn Rovers’ Alan Shearer (three consecutive campaigns) in 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96.

If two or more players finish on the same number of goals, then the award is shared.

slipstream yacht position

Who will win the Playmaker award?

This award — given to the player who provides the most assists over the campaign — was introduced in the 2017-18 season.

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has won it three of the six times it has been handed out, and the Belgian is in the hunt again this season.

However, Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins will take some beating — the Englishman is three clear of the field heading into the final day of the season.

Like the Golden Boot, if two or more players finish on the same number of assists, then the award is shared.

Who will win the Player, Manager and Team of the year awards?

These awards will be decided after the final round of fixtures. Manchester City’s Phil Foden is the favourite with the bookmakers to be crowned PFA Players’ Player of the Year (decided by players), with team-mate Rodri , Chelsea’s Palmer and Arsenal’s Declan Rice all not far behind.

The manager of the season is decided by a panel assembled by the Premier League’s sponsors. Guardiola, Arteta and Emery are the leading contenders.

As for the team of the year, it is sure to include a number of players from Manchester City and Arsenal. Last season, nine of the 11 selected played for one of these clubs and it is likely to be similar for this campaign.

And finally… here are a few quirky stats to look out for as you settle down in front of the television to feast on the final day of the 2023-24 Premier League season:

• If Manchester City win the title with an inferior goal difference to Arsenal (right now it’s Arsenal: 61; City: 60) it will be the first time in Guardiola’s career that his team have won the league and not had the highest goal difference.

• Manchester United, who are in eighth, are battling to avoid their outright lowest-placed finish in the Premier League era — seventh in 2013-14 (the season after Sir Alex Ferguson retired). Erik ten Hag’s team are away at Brighton & Hove Albion and, due to their poor goal difference, realistically need to better Newcastle’s result ( Brentford away) to make the top seven. The last time United finished as low as eighth in the top flight was in 1989-90 when they came 13th. That campaign was also the last where United registered a negative goal difference (-1). Heading into the final game of this season, it is -3.

Inside Fergie’s lair: what it was really like in Man United manager’s slipstream

• If Burnley concede four times against Nottingham Forest, they will join Sheffield United (101) and Luton (81) in conceding 80+ goals this season. The last English top-flight season where three clubs conceded this many was in 1966-67. That campaign saw five clubs ship 80+ goals: Southampton (92), Aston Villa (85), West Ham (84), Fulham (83) and Newcastle (81). If Burnley don’t hit the unwanted mark of 80, West Ham could do so if they concede nine against Manchester City….

• Speaking of West Ham, who are guaranteed to finish ninth, their goal difference of -12 is unusually low for a team in the top half of the table. Since the introduction of goal difference in the 1976-77 season, the club with the lowest figure to finish in the top 10 is Wimbledon in 1994-95 with -17. Joe Kinnear’s team came ninth that year.

• Fulham’s Joao Palhinha has received the most yellow cards so far this season with 13 — one more than Bournemouth ’s Marcos Senesi . Palhinha picked up the most bookings in the Premier League last season, so if he does end up ‘top’ of the pile again, he will become the third player in the competition’s history to do so twice — after Mark Hughes in 1995-96 and 1998-99 and Cheick Tiote in 2010-11 and 2011-12.
