One thing leads to another, and while on a camping trip to Florida, I was showing some friends pictures of the Drifter 12, and describing what it was like. They were interested but wanted one designed for two people. I took the basic design, and stretched to 15'. I went home, and spent the next couple of months building the Drifter 15. It is just like the Drifter 12, but is designed for one or two persons. I shipped the boat to Florida in a crate, and fortunately it arrived intact. Next time I'll build a stronger crate! The amas on this design also fit in the main hull. It is a fun boat to sail, and faster than the smaller model, with a taller mast. These are not designed as high performance boats, but sail well because they are so easily driven with a simple rig. Basically the same concept as the Fulmar 19, which has always been a favorite of mine. This would be a great boat for camp cruising for one person. You could carry plenty of camping gear without the weight of the second person.

The latest boat in the series is the Drifter 14, which I build earlier this summer for my own use. It is more high performance than the others, with bigger amas to give it more sail carrying power. The amas no long fit into the main hull, but everything fits very nicely onto a custom rack on my Toyota pickup. It's quite a fast boat, considering the simple rig I am using. The center of effort of the rig is low, so there is no problem with pitchpoling, and going downwind in stronger winds is really fun. I made up a special masthead fitting so I could put on stays, out of 1/8" spectra, and still allow the mast to rotate to furl the sail. The stays keep the mast from bending, which gives you better sail shape. I can add a small roller furling jib, which really adds to the performance. All of these boats are steered with rudder pedals; it's nice always having your hands free. You can eat lunch while you are cruising along. This design is mostly meant for one person, but I can take my wife along for a ride. She wants to take it out by herself next time, after sailing the smaller version.

There are plans available Here for four different versions of the Drifter trimarans. There is the Drifter 12 , the Drifter 12L , which has longer amas, and a taller mast, the Drifter 14 , and the Drifter 16 , which is an enlarged version of the 14, for two people.

My wife did a couple of nice videos of the boats:

Anyone interested in one of these boats can contact me at - [email protected]

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

As with the CORTEZ 16, this boat has it origins with an earlier design called the SUN DOWNER 16, though deck, coachroof, and keel, were significantly changed. Thanks to Tony Davis for providing updated information.

Les gens intéressés peuvent me contacter à Mwgumprecht(at)comcast(point)net

drifter 17 trimaran plans

The windrider 17 trimaran, a nearly perfect sailboat.

The most versatile sailboat in the WindRider Trimaran clan, the WindRider 17 has features to please just about everybody.  With the affordability of this boat we are bringing the joy and pleasure of sailing high-quality boats to as many people as possible.  We bring outstanding quality for the price.

The boat is easy to sail and operate.  Anyone will have confidence with stability and control.  The boats controls are very intuitive.  You steer left by pushing your left foot and steer right by pushing your right foot from the comfortable cockpit.  Steering with your feet leaves your hands free to operate the sails. All controls are easily accessed and within close proximity of the cockpit no twisting or bending required.  The boat is very quick, all while staying extremely dry.

The mast is lightweight and rotates improving performance of the full battened mainsail, giving way to great visibility.   The boat is constructed of rotomolded polyethelene which is very durable and less maintenance than fiberglass. The 17 is so easy to trailer it slides on rails to be put on and off the trailer and can be towed behind most vehicles.  The launch and retrieval time of the boat for a solo sailor is about 30 minutes and 10 minutes for 2 or more sailors.

This boat offers a fine combination of excellent sailing performance with a comfortable face forward cockpit seating. The sailing capacity is quite large with up to 6 adults.  In addition to the main cockpit there is a larger forward cockpit for your passenger and the cushioned seat reverses to face the captain.  The optional stiff backed net seats, which are very comfortable and soft, will allow the boat to easily carry 4 adults and 2 kids.  The nets are also perfect for lounging and relaxing.

Social or family sailors can spend the day beach-sailing with the spouse, the kids, and their friends. The single-line roller-furling jib makes it easy to tune the ride, offering an easy and stable ride for the youngsters or fast and wet for the teens. The 17′s shallow draft makes it a natural for swapping rides off the beach, or throw down an anchor and furl the sails to create a huge swim platform with lots of places to grab on and rest. The trimaran design makes it nearly impossible to capsize, while giving the ability to go fast.

The WindRider17 is a great day sailer that can be used for extended trips. Camp-cruisers can pack enough gear for week-long adventures into the 17′s covered, dry center cockpit, or use drybags and pack it on the trampolines and take a passenger as well.

Performance sailors can add the optional Turbo Reacher kit for an adrenaline rush that'll make the jet-skiers envious.

This is what's included in one sleek, easily-managed trimaran package:

  • Fully-battened main sail on a rotating mast
  • Roller-furling jib for total control
  • Telescoping hull beams for easy setup and trailering
  • Trampolines between the hull beams for relaxing or extra passengers
  • Foot-pedal steering for single-handed versatility
  • Dual cockpit covers
  • Built-in bilge pump

This boat is great for the experienced and first time sailors alike.  Take this boat for a fun family day trip or be adventurous and take it out for several days.  It is quick, easy to launch, sail, and retrieve.  It is comfortable, safe, and affordable.  This boat is a vision of beauty and function which will make you fall in love.  We have boats stationed all over the country making them easy to test sail and look at.  Don't Wait!  Try one out Today!!

Intro Part 1—The W17 'Estuary' Trimaran

I am pleased to announce that the detail building plans for the new W17 are now ready. If you're not familiar with this new design, rather than repeat myself, may I first suggest you read its initial introduction on this site, W17 Trimaran Design , and then continue back here.

One thing that IS worth repeating here are the main design goals for the W17; because if a new owner is to be happy with this boat, he or she first needs to feel in tune with the specifically planned attributes.

So these were to be:

  • speed, sailing efficiency with a light, responsive helm
  • relative dryness
  • ease of handling, both sailing and ashore, along with a
  • relatively small budget and
  • reasonably short build time by almost anyone with basic woodworking skills whilst using…
  • readily available materials
  • the boat should be easy to prepare for trailering and finally ....
  • look unique and attractive, and offer a number of features not found on competing craft

To achieve the above, this unique design has incorporated some interesting new ideas and I am sure the boat will not only be exciting to sail and own, but also be an eyecatcher that will be a constant conversation piece.  (As you read this, keep in mind that it was written in 2010 when the boat was first conceived).

In Part 1 of this article about the W17, I will elaborate principally on design aspects and choices, but follow that up with Parts 2 & 3, first giving a brief rundown of the proposed building procedure and then in Part 3, explain what the plans show and provide a detailed list. By that time, the detailed Building Manual should be complete and the plans will be up for sale, so it's time to start thinking seriously about this fun boat.

I've intentionally numbered the main design targets above as I will insert these numbers in the appropriate places while I describe the design to you in more detail below, so you can readily see what aspects help to satisfy what target.

The 16 sheets of plans are well detailed and I will give each buyer an email address to reach me quickly and plan to get a reply back on most questions within 24 hours. The plans come with a very detailed written account of how to assemble the parts and give lots of tips along the way on what order to do thing and why, and also how to generally proceed for the best results (6).

Fairing

The folding system is created by the use of heavy stainless hinges with removable lower pins and these hinges are well detailed with special installation tips and even a suggested supplier (4,8). The forward fairing will stay in place permanently and not be affected by the folding system.

As the forward beam carries at least 2 ⁄ 3 of the ama load, it is built heavier than the aft one, though the shape of the outer contoured part is similar for both. To get an overall idea of how this (and the whole boat) will look (2010), here is my rendition of a W17 against the real water of beautiful Lake Champlain in upstate Vermont, USA.

W17 Rendition

The rudder arrangement is another unique feature of this boat and the basics of this were taken from a kayak I own that also uses a horizontal deck-level top hinge … something also featured on the little 12-footer that I was able to test sail during the summer of 2009.  What I like about this arrangement is not only its light weight and solid feel, but also the way the partially balanced spade rudder gives a nice light helm with a relatively small rudder that takes less draft.   It can still pivot up as one comes ashore and can be arranged to release on contact to avoid damage.

The mainsheet was a problem on the small boat unless the boom was nearly amidships, so after not finding anything better, I have elected to go with a long curved track that will certainly avoid repeating similar issues. Strong Hi-Beam tracks are available already curved from several suppliers and although not inexpensive, will make the boat much safer and more pleasurable to sail, so for me, it's money well directed and spent. Being as this system is more generally used for large professional raceboats, it also adds a nice touch of efficiency and performance to its appearance (1,4,9). I would also recommend the use of a mainsheet quick-release cleat (such as the relatively recent Spinlock series). Because this cleat cleverly permits the release under full load, it allows the experienced sailor to leave the mainsheet cleated far more than would normally be recommended, adding to the comfort and ease of sailing the boat (2,4,9). Two other unique features of this versatile and fun boat, involve its rig. This boat is of a size that can readily use sails from a small beach catamaran of say 17-18'—though preferably of at least 5-oz material. In some cases the mainsail peak may need cutting down to fit the slightly shorter wingmast but this is readily done at fairly low cost by most sailmakers. Whatever the upwind rig chosen, the boat has been planned from the start to carry an additional drifter or asymmetrical spi on broad reaches to supplement the loss of apparent wind when sailing off wind. In order to not interfere with the jib that will likely be set on a roller, the jib tack has not only been moved 300 mm aft but there will also be a small bowsprit to ensure good separation between the foresails. Again with a unique appearance, this sprit will not be round as is common, but flat topped and wide, as this design will only need a bobstay and no lateral support. The short sprit will readily socket into a sleeve above the deck, keeping the boat as compact as possible when ashore.

The final 'pièce de résistance' that will appeal to many and for good reason, is the inclusion of a unique wing mast design for this small boat. Although some extreme and unrealistic claims have been made for the improvement in performance that a wing mast can give, I am confident that this design will give at least 10% more lift and that's an important boost. As many find it hard to find reliable, usable information for such a mast that can be built in a home shop, I have decided to include plans for such a design for those who are really serious about building this boat. This design will also not require special skills or facilities that are beyond the average good boatbuilder and that will cover most of you out there considering this design. Even generic wing mast plans are typically sold for around $200—which is more than the complete set of plans for the W17, and because of that will only be sent out after the designer sees pictures of your W17 hulls nearing completion. It's the bonus for getting another W17 on the water and sharing your pics for others to see and enjoy ;-)  I actually have two Waters Wing Mast designs, with the wood one best suiting the Cruise Rig and eventually coming FREE with the boat plans.  The second design is of carbon fiber and after testing, will be the mast for the Race Rig.  With time, I hope to dispel some of the mysteries of wing mast design and show that if sound engineering is applied within a good design process, and if good materials are properly considered and used, then a reliable and attractive wing mast is within reach of a lot more sailors than would appear at present, and for a material cost that are certainly less than a standard alloy spar.   Both cruise and race designs have the option of being primarily built with carbon fiber for greater stiffness and some weight saving, but the cruise rig will also have the less expensive option of being built using fiberglass and suitable wood.

So that's the overall view of the W17 design and I hope you will agree with me that the general goals of the design have been effectively achieved.

The Drifter 14 is a small trimaran that can be paddled or sailed with a simple rig using a windsurfing mast. The sail rolls up, and is reefable to any size in seconds. The boat is steered with rudder pedals, so your hands are always free. It takes about 15 minutes to assemble, and can be car topped, or carried on a small trailer. It is very stable and easy to sail, tacks well, and is quite fast. Great for kids, or anyone to learn how to sail. There is also room for an occasional passenger. The Drifter 14 is great for exploring rivers, bays, and lakes, and is easy to build out of plywood, weighing about 120 lbs when assembled.

--Mark Gumprecht, designer
