2003 Ferretti Yachts 590 Motoryacht – Pretty Lady – Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The Ferretti Yachts 590 is a flybridge motoryacht penned for entertainment and relaxation. Gilman Yachts has this 2003 Ferretti 590, Pretty Lady , listed with a $499,000 asking price.

Exterior entertainment spaces aboard Pretty lady include a two-person sun pad on the foredeck, two forward-facing transom bench seats in the cockpit and a U-shaped dinette on the flybridge.

Inside, the split-level salon has a lounge area aft with a U-shaped settee to port and a chair to starboard. 2005 Hinckley Yachts Talaria 40 – Elise – Portland, Maine

“The new [Hinckley] Talaria 40 is neither as sporty as her smaller sibling nor as soft on the senses as her larger sister. She fits nicely between the two, with accommodations that invite owners to spend more than a weekend aboard, even to prepare meals and sleep,” Yachting previously reported. 

Worth Avenue Yachts has Elise , a Hinckley Yachts Talaria 40 that combines classic downeast lines with angling features, listed for sale with a $599,000 price tag. While the yacht was originally delivered in 2005, it was transformed in 2012 after naval architect Mathew Smith, engineers from Volvo Penta and Hank Hinckley replaced the standard jet propulsion system with the latest Volvo Penta IPS pod-drive propulsion system, resulting in a “groundbreaking and first-of-its-kind modification,” according to Worth Avenue Yachts.

The yacht has “enhanced tracking, superior turning ability, and a more efficient midrange cruise compared to traditional jet-powered counterparts,” says the broker, adding, “ Elise goes a step further by offering dynamic positioning, allowing her to hold a specific GPS position at the touch of a button—an invaluable feature not only around docks but also during bridge wait times or while observing an upwind mark rounding in a sailing race.”

With the yacht’s previous owner being an avid fisherman, they added an array of features that enhance the fishing experience, including 27-foot Rupp removable outriggers, rod holders, a baitwell, a slightly modified cockpit, a removable rocket launcher and a livewell.

Belowdecks, owners and guests have access to the day head to port, the V-berth cabin forward and the galley to starboard. The galley is equipped with a Corian countertop, a two-burner Princess electric cooktop, a single-basin polished stainless-steel sink, a Sharp convection microwave oven, an Adler Barbour refrigerator/freezer and a U-Line ice maker.

Grand Banks Yachts built, and is currently selling Defiance , a Grand Banks 46 Eastbay SX, for $829,000. The 2012 Downeast Cruiser features a two-stateroom, two-head layout. It’s powered by twin 600 hp Cummins QSC 8.3 diesels with Zeus pod drives, which give the 46 Eastbay SX a 31-knot top hop.

The interior of the 46-footer has satin-finish teak with a teak-and-holly sole throughout the interior. A U-shaped dinette to port and a sofa to starboard complete the salon’s seating arrangement.

Belowdecks, owners and their guests will find the galley amidships with the en suite master stateroom and its queen berth forward in the bow. Galley appliances include a Princess Gourmet three-burner cooktop, a freezer, two refrigerator drawers, a microwave/convection oven, a stainless-steel sink and provision stowage.

That yacht has a split-level interior arrangement with a lounge area aft, and the formal dining forward and adjacent to the lower helm station and galley. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.

• Superyachts  are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
• The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
• Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."

Big sur slip-out area opens to the public.

Highway 1 south of Rocky Creek Bridge opened to the public on Friday. The road reopened to all travelers under one-way traffic control at 6:30 a.m. on Friday.

The area was closed since the end of March due to a slip-out that sent a chunk of the road into the ocean.

Newsom said that Caltrans crews worked overtime to make reopening on Friday morning possible. This is eight days faster than originally predicted

“Crews have been working day and night to quickly repair the damage to Highway 1 caused by recent storms, which has disrupted the lives of individuals living in and around Big Sur – limiting access to the area and hampering tourism. Thanks to the diligent efforts, traffic will resume eight days ahead of schedule – bringing relief and a sense of normalcy back to one of California's most iconic coastal communities," Newsom said.

Newsom previously announced on May 3 that state officials planned to reopen the portion of Highway 1 in Big Sur that collapsed in late March by Memorial Day weekend.

Newsom also announced back in early May signing an emergency proclamation that would add $100 million in federal funding for repairs of Highway 1 and 18 other California roadways impacted by recent storms, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

“The state is working overtime to complete repairs as safely and as quickly as possible and I have signed a state of emergency proclamation, which will help ensure that we receive critical federal funding to help impacted communities bounce back from these devastating storms,” Newsom said in a statement.

The slip-out portion of Highway 1 will be under 24/7 signalized traffic control. This will give unrestricted public access with "one-way alternating traffic in both the north and southbound directions," per Newsom.

However, Newsom said that excessive winds, rain or any construction site condition changes could delay work.

Caltrans estimated that permanent repairs could exceed $25 million. Construction is currently being funded with a $1 million emergency contract.

The slip-out occurred on the morning of March 30, just half a mile north of Bixby Bridge, and Caltrans was forced to close the highway at Palo Colorado, 13 miles south of Carmel-by-the Sea. The County of Monterey said the slip-out has not moved since Saturday.

The cause is believed to be a recent rain event and saturated ground.

Work Progress

Caltrans crews drilled, installed and grouted 40 vertical and 75 sub-horizontal steel elements into the slope to stabilize the southbound lane. This forced Caltrans to close the area, minus two daily convoys.

"Now that Caltrans has stabilized the southbound lane and preserved the northbound lane, the site will continue to be monitored and visually inspected," said Newsom's office in a news release.

A project to construct a permanent repair for the slip-out area is in the design phase and work is estimated to be completed by spring 2025.

Highway 1 Closures

This slip-out is not the first natural disaster that has forced the closure of the Pacific Coast Highway this year.

Two separate slides and another slip-out closed the highway further south. Because of the work being done on these locations, the highway is closed at Paul Slide and Limekiln State Park to Lime Creek.

Although the slip-out area near Rocky Creek Bridge will be open to the public, the portions listed above are still closed.

Paul's Slide is expected to be cleared by the summer of 2024. Regent Slide will reopen by mid-September 2024.

Dolan Slide has no estimated clearance date, but they're in the final clearing phases, per Caltrans. Crews still need to install wire mesh along the rock wall on the side of the road

The California Department of Parks and Recreation announced that all state parks in Big Sur will be reopening for campers on Thursday, May 23.

The parks include Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, Limekiln State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park and Point Sur State Historic Park. These were all closed due to the slip-out.

The Big Sur Branch Library announced it was reopening on Friday from noon until 4 p.m. The library is located on Highway 1 at Ripplewood Resort. Normal business hours will resume on Saturday.

The global megarich are paying up to $2 million a week for superyacht rentals but smaller boat charters are down

Sales of luxury yachts may be down but the world’s megarich have found another, more instantaneous way to get their high seas kicks — chartering a swanky boat instead.

Total chartered days for yachts longer than 50 meters has increased since 2020, according to  IYC , a global firm specializing in the sale and charters of luxury yachts. Vessels between 60 to 70 meters posted the most growth last year, at 10%, whereas shorter yachts aren’t nearly as popular as before.

IYC Chief Executive Officer  Raphael Sauleau  said he’s seeing more customers willing to pay a higher premium for the ultimate ocean experience. Clients are willing to pay more for a so-called advanced provisioning allowance, which covers on-board expenses like food and service, of up to 40% compared to the standard 30% of the total charter fee, he said.

New customers are coming to yachting “with an appetite for larger yachts,” Sauleau said. Compared with smaller vessels, these floating villas come with more privacy, better facilities and a larger crew. A bigger range of large models that’s become available over the past three years has also contributed to higher bookings, he added.

Fraser Yachts , a major international broker, is experiencing a similar phenomenon, receiving 7% more charter bookings for yachts over 60 meters in 2023 versus prior years. Across yachts of all sizes however, the number of charter days reported last year was 19% down on 2021.

It’s a quirk that would seem to chime with the trend of super luxury brands defying a broader luxury slowdown. Hermes International SCA, for example, saw Chinese buyers  snap up its products . Hermes typically caters to the most affluent customers, making it more resilient in a challenging luxury goods market.

At the same time, sales of floating palaces are waning, the Superyacht Times said in a  report  in March. Sales of superyachts, generally defined as boats longer than 30 meters, contracted 20% in 2023 from 2022 and are well down on 2021, when many rich people splurged on boats to travel in a safe and exclusive way.

Stacy Fischer-Rosenthal , the president of luxury travel and lifestyle consultancy Fischer Travel Enterprises, said she’s expecting to help clients charter at least 10 yachts this year. Most of the interest is around megayachts — or yachts above 60 meters — and prices range from about $700,000 to $2 million a week, she said.

Wealthy people may be shying away from outright purchases due to geopolitical worries and global conflicts.

Fear of more widespread fighting in the Middle East and Russian’s war in Ukraine “seem to make some buyers nervous, particularly those in the market for very large new builds,” the Superyacht Times said.

Once a respected cardiac surgeon, Dr. Ralph de la Torre, chairman and CEO of Steward Health Care , has been publicly criticized for living a lavish lifestyle — owning not one but two yachts — while running his company into the ground.

De la Torre bought his $40-million yacht after Steward sold its hospital properties to Medical Trust Properties (MTP), a real-estate investment trust, in 2016 — a deal that resulted in a massive payday for executives while leaving the Steward-operated hospitals to face steep annual rents as they transitioned to being tenants under MTP’s ownership.

On Monday, those financial troubles came to a head when Steward filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy .

When de la Torre first started Steward in collaboration with Cerberus Capital Management, a New York-based private equity firm, his self-described goal was to create an affordable approach to healthcare that served vulnerable populations.

Instead, doctors, nurses and elected officials have criticized the for-profit network for prioritizing their own profits over patient care.

Does Steward’s CEO have a $40 million-dollar yacht?

In February of this year, Boston Globe columnist Brian McGrory revealed that Steward’s CEO owns not one, but two yachts.

De la Torre bought the $40 million, 190-foot yacht named the "Amaral" a few years ago, according to McGrory’s reporting for the Globe . De la Torre's other yacht is a $15 million, 90-foot sport fishing boat named the ‘Jaruco.'

The Amaral is a massive, six-bedroom yacht that costs about $4 million a year to run, according to SuperYacht Fan .

According to reporting by The American Prospect , Steward acquired at least two business jets and a private suite at Dallas’s AA Arena, where the NBA’s Mavericks play. 

Where did Ralph de la Torre work before Steward?

In 2008, de la Torre became the CEO of Caritas Christi Health Care, a struggling hospital network in Massachusetts. A few years later, he made a deal with Cerberus Capital Management to start Steward Health Care and invest money into struggling hospitals.

Is Ralph de la Torre a medical doctor?

De la Torre graduated from Duke University in 1988 and got his medical degree from a joint program between Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1992, according to his biography.

Before his stint as CEO of Steward, he was the founder and CEO of the Cardiovascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Cardiovascular Management Associates, according to his biography on Steward’s website . He also worked as the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at BIDMC.

What is Ralph de la Torre’s salary?

According to reporting by The American Prospect , an individual familiar with Steward’s finances estimated he makes about $16 million per year.

In 2020, de la Torre bought Steward from Cerberus for $335 million, but with his own stake in the investment company, used Steward’s cash to pay himself a $100 million dividend, according to that same reporting.

Where does Ralph de la Torre live?

According to reporting by the Globe , de la Torre lives in a Dallas "mansion" and shares a neighborhood with former President George W. Bush and Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and longtime panelist on ABC's "Shark Tank."

When de la Torre was living in Boston, he lived in a seven-bedroom home in West Newton that he sold for more than $6 million in 2013, according to reporting by Boston.com .

According to reporting by the Globe , de la Torre met his first wife, Wing Cheung de la Torre, a native of Hong Kong while he was in medical school. They married in 2004 and had twin boys in 2008. In 2018, she filed for divorce.
