M&A: British Luxury Yacht Manufacture SUNSEEKER to be acquired by US Lionheart Capital

The Chinese conglomerate, Wanda Group, in a bid to overcome debt, has reportedly agreed to sell the British yacht builder to the US investment firm in a multi-million dollar deal.

Wanda Group, the majority owner of Sunseeker International since 2013, has agreed to sell the Poole-based yacht builder to Miami-based investment firm Lionheart Capital, according to Bloomberg. The news agency stated that “according to people with knowledge of the matter”, Wanda Group and Lionheart had signed a sale-and-purchase agreement. The transaction could close as early as May 2024, depending on British regulatory approval.

Sunseeker has declined to comment on the situation. Last year, Sunseeker CEO Andrea Frabetti announced that the yacht builder had a retail forward order value of GDP 625 million, signalling a continued recovery following a downturn in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Led by founder and CEO Ophir Sternberg, Lionheart is a diversified investment firm focused on “value growth investments”. Lionheart has a wide-ranging portfolio including ventures into private and publicly traded companies, retail and commerce, residential and hospitality, having backed companies including restaurant chain BurgerFi International, reimbursement specialist MSP Recovery and technology company SMX (Security Matters). In 2021, the firm was part of a group that bought US powerboat maker Cigarette Racing, which recently launched its Middle East operation .

In 2013, Wanda Group, China’s largest shopping centre operator, reportedly acquired nearly 92 percent of Sunseeker for GDP 320 million. According to Bloomberg “Wanda Chairman Wang Jianling said then that the investment was driven by growth in China’s consumption of high-end luxury products that was ‘exponential’.” However, the conglomerate has increasingly come under pressure after borrowing costs surged and Beijing continues to crack down on the property sector, Bloomberg reported.

In early December 2023, Wanda Group was divesting core businesses, including its commercial facility management and movie divisions, to avoid bankruptcy. In January of this year, the Group was selling assets such as the 193-room Shanghai Wanda Reign luxury hotel, situated in Shanghai’s famed Bund district for an undisclosed sum. According to reports, sources indicate that the transaction was valued between an estimated 1.44 billion and 1.66 billion yuan (USD 204 million and USD 234 million). As The Wire China reports, the “reign” of China’s former richest man Dalian Wanda could be coming to an end as Wanda Group enters a “selling spree” in a bid to overcome debt and a low cash flow.

Sunseeker 76 Yacht Owner: On Board with Kenneth Lai

 • April 9, 2019

Proud owner of a new Sunseeker 76 Yacht, Prizm Group Director KENNETH LAI splits the use of his boat between business meetings and personal time with his family and friends, exploring the islands around Hong Kong. By Lindsay Varty.

Kenneth Lai prefers his business meetings outdoors – on board his boat. And his new Sunseeker 76 Yacht is the latest luxury platform to host Prizm Group’s clients and prospects, or senior management’s weekend brainstorming sessions.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Lai attended Wah Yan College in Wanchai before heading to New Zealand in his teenage years, eventually completing a degree at Auckland University.

As a typical Hong Kong kid growing up in the 1980s, Lai enjoyed socialising with friends after school and viewed boating as a luxury that only few people could experience. He certainly never thought about owning a boat himself.

“Back then, I thought boating was something for other people,” says Lai, now a member of both Aberdeen Boat Club and Aberdeen Marina Club. “It was not a reality for us, whereas now it’s easy to go on a boat even if you don’t own one. You can rent a junk boat, go on a boat party that you book on Facebook, but not back then.”

After graduating from university, he returned to Hong Kong and decided to set up his own tech company.

“It was a really bad time for the economy and hard to find jobs, so I started my own venture. I had a computer science background and some good friends looking for jobs. We started to hang out and think about what we could do with our skills,” Lai recalls.

Lai’s Sunseeker 76 Yacht (pictured) is an upgrade from his previous Sunseeker, a Manhattan 55

“We started off doing e-commerce development and providing payment solutions to websites. We were lucky to enter the industry in the so-called ‘pioneer’ time. Since then, e-commerce has become more and more popular with businesses and merchants paying more attention to it, so business started picking up.”

Now 38, Lai is Director of Prizm Group, which provides information technology and integrated marketing solutions to customers worldwide. The company has over 200 employees across five global offices including Hong Kong, China, New Zealand and Canada.

FIRST LOVE, FIRST BOAT

Despite achieving success in the business world, it wasn’t until he met his future wife that he considered buying his first boat, an Azimut 42, a decade ago.

“I was still dating my now-wife at the time and it was always her dream. My wife is Canadian-Chinese. She grew up in Edmonton and she had a more Western mentality than me. At that time, most of my friends were locals living the big-city lifestyle, but she just treasured the sun, the outdoors, open water. So, to fulfil her dream, I had to purchase my first boat!”

Aboard the Azimut 42 – his first to be named Tory after the town his wife grew up in – Lai and his wife enjoyed many quiet weekends away from their hectic office jobs, exploring Hong Kong’s islands and meeting new friends along the way.

Lai, who has two sons, at the wheel of Tory

“Before we had kids, it became a passion to go around islands we hadn’t seen before and check them out. We didn’t even know the names as there was no Google Maps. We met a lot of great people, tourists, expats or backpackers hiking on the islands, seeing what they could find beyond all the parties and drinking in Lan Kwai Fong.”

Lai decided to purchase his second boat, a Sunseeker Manhattan 55, after being persuaded it was time for an upgrade by Gordon Hui, Chairman of Sunseeker Asia.

“Gordon and I would always talk about boats because he is the king of Sunseekers! I had always liked them for their James Bond look. He introduced me to his friends who were also yacht owners and we talked a lot about our shared passions. Also, we had just found out that our first child (now five) was on the way, so we had good reason to want a boat with a bit more space,” he laughs.

FAMILY TIME

More recently, Lai, who already owns two Lamborghinis, was tempted to get a new supercar after a ride in his friend’s Bugatti, but his wife steered him towards a bigger yacht. His Sunseeker 76 Yacht, his third boat to be named Tory , arrived earlier this year, after the arrival of their second son.

sunseeker yacht owner

Lai’s second boat was a Sunseeker Manhattan 55, also named Tory

“We wanted to upgrade again to create an activity that we could share with our family and also friends, who also have kids – more than we have! We moved the kitchen from the main deck to the lower one, so there’s more space for kids to run around.”

Lai takes his wife and two boys out on Tory most weekends and is happy when his eldest son asks to go for a day out on the boat rather than a shopping mall. “My boy says to me, ‘Daddy, I have more fun going to the beach than Toys”R”Us.”

And it’s exactly these values that Lai and his wife try to instil in their children. That enjoying the great outdoors – as they were lucky enough to do in New Zealand and Canada – is just as important as enjoying city life.

OUTDOOR OFFICE

Lai also loves to entertain his clients on his boat, often inviting them for a cruise after meetings in Prizm Group’s headquarters in Kwun Tong.

“It has become a routine for our foreign clients that come to Hong Kong. We have a good meeting in the office, then we walk one minute to the boat and just cruise around Victoria Harbour. I think it gives them a good memory and a good impression. We joke that if they don’t sign a contract, we throw them overboard!”

It’s not just new clients that get the star treatment either. Lai makes it a ritual to take senior management fishing every two weeks, to clear their minds and talk business.

“Going fishing has become our senior management brainstorming session! Every alternate weekend they join me on the boat very early in the morning to go fishing. It gives us time to have a clear mind.

“We talk a bit about business, a bit about the road map of the company, and anything else we need to discuss. We normally finish around 10am and go back home to spend the weekend with our families. And we bring fish!”

Sunseeker Reveals More Details About its Groundbreaking 120 Yacht

By Frances Flannagan

First revealed as a concept at the Monaco Yacht Show 2023, Sunseeker has unveiled more details about the design evolution of its latest project: the 36.6m 120 Yacht. Set apart from other yachts in her class, this floating oasis offers a vast array of exceptional onboard spaces, including a large aft cockpit.

The Sunseeker 120 Yacht is a beautiful culmination of heritage, innovation and performance, drawing on Sunseeker’s expertise and elevating the British yard’s superyacht range. She boasts three cascading decks, each offering an array of luxurious features, and an eye-catching design with an elegant profile and lavish interior. The 120 is set apart from other yachts within her class with the addition of a large aft cockpit, impressive flybridge and stunning main deck Owner’s cabin.

Her exterior design is characterised by bold geometric shapes, alongside exuding style and effortless functionalities. The 120 Yacht boasts a range of innovative design elements, including a fixed sun lounger with a parasol integrated into the tender garage door, offering a unique way to relax by the water.

Her exterior spaces are unmatched, acting as an outdoor sanctuary for guests, with loose furniture providing a comfortable seating area alongside a fixed wet bar. The cockpit is separated from the interior by a stunning curved glazing, offering a private space for socialising.

The 120 Yacht’s revolutionary flybridge is a spectacular addition, boasting over 71 sqm of living space. It is a great entertainment area, featuring three sunloungers, a large sofa, and four lounging chairs, with a dining table that can seat twelve guests.

An elevated foredeck can be found forward of the raised pilot house, including a C-shaped seating group with twin tables that are complimented by a spa tub and four-person sunpad. The 120 Yacht’s design has been meticulously considered, ensuring seamless movement through the vessel and ample space for both guests and crew. Strategic access points have been implemented to facilitate convenient service across the yacht, whilst she features uninterrupted access from stern to bow, enhancing liveability on board.

The 120 Yacht’s interior is a masterpiece, penned by Design Unlimited, and exuding sophistication in every single element. Natural light is a key feature, enhanced by the elective materials used throughout her design and reflective surfaces that bounce the light around the space. Guests can become completely immersed in their sumptuous surroundings, which is characterised by stone finishes, statement lighting pieces and detailed centrepiece bulkheads.

Up to ten guests can be accommodated onboard the 120 Yacht across four cabins, each equipped with an ensuite. The Owner’s suite on the 122 sqm main deck is phenomenal, benefitting from a completely flush floor to the bathroom to enhance ease of movement between spaces. This suite is a private oasis, furnished to an exceptionally high standard and enhanced by an abundance of natural light which floods in through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Her beautiful and innovative design is enhanced even further with the scope for customisation, allowing for Owner’s to elevate the design as the space can be manipulated to perfectly reflect their style and preferences. The 120 Yacht is geared up to be an exceptional model: a true reflection of Sunseeker’s expertise with meticulous attention placed on the Owner and guests’ onboard experience.

New co-ownership platform exclusive to Sunseeker owners

We explore the differentiating factors and the long-term vision for the new meros co-ownership platform….

Image for article New co-ownership platform exclusive to Sunseeker owners

On 3 June, Sunseeker announced the launch of Meros, a co-ownership platform developed exclusively for Sunseeker clients. SuperyachtNews speaks with Martin Huber, managing director of Meros, about the details of the new platform, the sharing economy, misconceptions and his long-term targets for the superyacht market.

“I started boating in the 1980s with small sports boats and then in 2006 I bought a Fairline 68 and I learnt very quickly that the costs are not in a good relation to the time that you can use the boat,” starts Martin Huber, managing director at Meros. “So, I decided with my next boat in 2016 to enter into co-ownership to formulate my own opinions on the model. However, I learnt that co-ownership makes no sense for smaller owner-driven boats, it creates far too many problems. Furthermore, the vessel was only available for private use and not for charter, but I felt this was a big disadvantage when compared with the possibilities.”

As to why Sunseeker, Huber explains that the Sunseeker brand and business model is the ideal partner for a co-ownership business. With the capacity to produce large numbers of vessels in a variety of size ranges, as well as having a strong international brand, Huber believes that through Sunseeker the co-ownership model can grow rapidly.

“It will naturally depend on how successful the business will be, but we have prepared our business in such a way that one day we will be expecting five-to-10 boats every year,” comments Huber.

“We are usually some years behind the US market, leasing, for instance, was adopted much earlier in the US than it was over here. The same has happened with various sharing models, many things have come from the US. A study out of Delaware predicts that the sharing economy will from $25billion to over $300billion in the next size years. I believe that the acceptance of the sharing economy is growing, especially amongst the younger generations. Of course, there are still those who believe you have to possess something to use it, but the younger generations just want access, not ownership,” continues Huber.

Huber cites the car market as an analogous business, explaining that 20 years ago few numbered the individuals that leased their vehicles, whereas today leasing a car, whether privately or through a company, is extremely common. Huber also believes that co-ownership models can help alleviate capacity issues at some of the world’s most popular marinas, as well as reducing the raw materials that are required for the superyacht industry.

“There are various distributions channels for the new platform, one is certainly through Sunseeker’s organisation because they have strong market access. But, we are also working with certain brokers. Not necessarily brokers from the traditional brokerage houses, but young brokers with an international network that have a completely different approach to the market,” explains Huber.

The first vessel to be made available for co-ownership with Meros is Sunseeker’s Blue Infinity 86 Yacht. At 26m Blue Infinity is above the 25m threshold that Huber has set for the model. Unlike previous co-ownership models, which focus on fractional private ownership, Blue Infinity will also be able to charter during those weeks when none of the co-owning parties are able to use the vessel. Vessels will be managed through Meros, which will arrange the crewing, berthing, insurance and various administrative responsibilities associated with managing a superyacht.

“We’re excited to be involved in bringing this new concept of yacht ownership across the Mediterranean and to the market,” comments Chris Head, director of sales at Sunseeker London Group. “As well as joining the Meros Members Club, Meros co-owners will be a welcome addition to the Sunseeker family. This exclusive network includes invitations to our new model launches, International Boat Shows & VIP events and owner cruises. Through Meros, we’re offering Sunseeker yacht ownership at a quarter of the cost. Simple, honouring your time and our heritage, while always prioritising your experience.”

Among certain factions of the superyacht industry, co-ownership certainly still has its detractors. Whether it is because the details of the various business models operated by different businesses are not understood well enough or because some doubt whether or not multiple owners can own and operate a superyacht harmoniously, many of the arguments do not typically stand up to interrogation. Given the amount of discourse that is dedicated to attracting new owners to the superyacht market, it is shocking at times the extent to which certain individuals push against a legitimate model that may attract new clients with different perspectives.

"If you make it easy to exit, you make it easy to get them in," concludes Huber.

The Famous Sunseeker

January 17, 2013 By Daniel Mihai Popescu 3 Comments

Sunseeker International , is a UK luxury motor yacht manufacturer founded by Robert Braithwaite. Their headquarters and assembly factory is in Poole Harbour, at Poole in Dorset, England. The company has been making motor boats since 1979.

I wanted to describe the company with their words, but they are too pompous. Anyway, Sunseeker seems to be the most famous motor yacht brand, to date. It’s disputable with Ferretti and Azimut, I know, but their business is better now, than ever. Sunseeker is an expensive luxurious brand, not suited for everybody. I’m sorry I have to say that again.

Sunseeker Yachts provides the ultimate in luxury and long-distance cruising ability.

Sunseeker 155 Yacht Sunseeker’s new flagship tri-deck 155 Yacht is now in build, and the first is due to launch in 2014. With a 4500 nautical mile range, this is the first ever semi-displacement, round bilge and long keel hull from Sunseeker. The 155 Yacht takes the concept of series building with personal customisation a step further than others, the modular composite build methodology virtually allowing owners a free hand, not just in the interior but also in the design of the actual superstructure. With a top speed of up to 26 knots the 155 Yacht will accommodate up to 12 guests and 10 crew members.

Sunseeker 40 Metre Yacht The Sunseeker 40 Metre Yacht is for those who enjoy independence and extended cruising. Offering extreme blue water credentials, this stunning new addition is designed and built to RINA unrestricted navigation classification. Palatial in scale, the 25-knot, 40 metre yacht presents ultra-spacious accommodation for up to 12 guests with clever layouts that allow the crew of 9 to move discreetly about the boat. There is an extraordinarily wide choice of cabin configurations, and options include the newly introduced, automated balconies to the forward master suite and main deck.

Manhattan Range

Spacious luxurious motor yachts in the Sunseeker open-deck sports boat tradition.

Manhattan 73 The Manhattan 73 is defined by its ingenious use of space. The vessel enjoys increased volume not just by length but also by courtesy of the broad beam that’s carried lower in the hull. This enables a third full-size double stateroom on the lower deck, plus plenty more headroom throughout. The main saloon is now also on one single, sweep-through level, providing a vast entertainment space. Finally, for ultimate manoeuvrability, there’s the option of joystick control, dramatically simplifying docking.

The cockpit screen rises fairly well aft in a smooth and neatly engineered radius, behind which is a helm station with pilot seating, wetbar and full dining arrangement. Portofino 40 Marking the return to this entry level length, the new Portofino 40 is the result of a long hard study of a highly competitive market sector, and the end product is an absolute class leading all-rounder. In plan she’s a two cabin, four+one berth, family or friends boat with central saloon, galley and twin access head and shower room. Beyond the exquisite owner stateroom forward, the real surprise is the headroom and huge hullside windows in the amidships cabin with its twin beds and third, child’s berth. Sunseeker 120 Yacht: latest updates on groundbreaking superyacht

 • Top stories

Following the unveiling of the Sunseeker 120 Yacht project at the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, the British shipyard has provided some fresh and exciting new updates

Slotting into the range between the Sunseeker 116 Yacht and the Sunseeker 130 Yacht, the Sunseeker 120 Yacht has quite an aggressive geometric character to the external styling. And thanks to Design Unlimited, that high-impact design language continues on the inside…

Sunseeker 120 Yacht: decadent day spaces

At the back end of this latest Sunseeker superyacht , an aft-facing sun lounger with integrated parasol is built into the tender garage’s gullwing door.

That conceals a day heads and shower, as well as enough storage space for a 6m tender and a pair of jet skis .

There’s also a large aft cockpit with a transverse wet bar, plenty of freestanding furniture and elegant wraparound glass balustrades – and the flybridge looks equally impressive.

Encompassing nearly 800 square feet, it provides plenty more relaxed furniture, plus dining for 12 and a casual bar for four.

But what you might not expect is the sheer versatility of the foredeck, which provides enough space for a huge C-shaped seating unit with twin tables, plus a spa tub and a four-person sun pad.

The open-plan main deck provides another 1,300 square feet of living space but it’s subtly zoned with screens, providing a sense of separation between the formal dining and relaxed lounging zones without obstructing the flow.

Sunseeker 120 Yacht with a five cabin layout

In addition to four en-suite cabins on the lower deck, the new Sunseeker features a show-stopping owner’s suite on the forward part of the main deck.

This “private oasis” comes with a single-level deck, floor-to-ceiling windows and an intimate starboard section with a chaise longue, an armchair and a small coffee table.

There’s also a dressing room with a vanity desk, shelving and drawers plus a spacious bathroom with twin sinks, a walk-in rain shower and an elegant mix of marble, brass and rustic timber.

As for performance, this new Sunseeker superyacht will clearly be optimised for comfort and efficiency rather than outright pace.

Equipped with a pair of 2,000hp MTU V12 engines on shafts, the Sunseeker 120 Yacht should achieve a 1,730-mile range at 10 knots and a top end of around 20 knots.

The largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, from Mark Zuckerberg to Jeff Bezos

 • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
 • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
 • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

Insider Today

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

sunseeker yacht owner

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

sunseeker yacht owner

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

sunseeker yacht owner

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

sunseeker yacht owner

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

sunseeker yacht owner

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Larry Ellison: Musashi

sunseeker yacht owner

Oracle founder Larry Ellison has owned several superyachts over the years, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — which he sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen .

He purchased his current boat, Musashi, in 2011 for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship.

Named after a famous samurai warrior, the 88-meter-long yacht has both Japanese and Art Deco-inspired design elements. She also boasts amenities including an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

Ellison is known for his extravagant spending — private islands, jets, a tennis tournament — and yachting is among his favorite and most expensive hobbies. He took up racing them in the 1990s and financed the America's Cup-winning BMW Oracle Racing team .

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

sunseeker yacht owner

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. "It was not a yacht that Steve and I were constructing, we were embarked on a philosophical action, implemented according to a quasi-religious process. We formed a single brain with four lobes."

Charles Simonyi: Norn

sunseeker yacht owner

Early Microsoft employee Charles Simonyi has purchased two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and 71-meter Skat.

Delivered in 2023, Norn is full of luxe features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that lifts to become a light-up dancefloor. She shares a militaristic style with Skat , which Simonyi sold in 2021.

Skats's name is derived from the Danish word for treasure, and she had a listing price of 56.5 million euros and was launched in 2002.

"The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi once said .

Sergey Brin: Dragonfly

sunseeker yacht owner

Google cofounder Sergey Brin has built a flotilla of yachts, boats, and toys known as the "Fly Fleet."

Named after a once-secret Google product , the largest of Brin's armada is the sleek Dragonfly , which boasts a movie theater and a helipad. The 73-meter-long vessel was built by the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts and can fit up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, according to SuperYacht Times.

Also in his fleet is the superyacht Butterfly, a mere 38 meters long. Often moored in the Bay Area, her crewmembers spend their downtime kitesurfing and giving swimming lessons to local kids.

The rest of his marine lineup includes a smaller boat called Firefly, as well as Jet Skis, foilboards, dinghies, and kiteboards. She takes a team of 50 full-time employees to manage, steer, and maintain the entire operation.

Sindhu Sundar contributed to an earlier version of this story.

Correction: May 6, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated Giovanna Vitelli's title. She is the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, not a vice president.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.

For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. New ZF pod drives coupled to the yacht’s twin 1,650 hp MAN V12 diesels also save space. It is priced from about $6.2 million.

As we said during our 2021 tour of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.

This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.

Every element of the yacht is XXL-size—from the massive hydraulic swim platform to the full-width flybridge that covers almost 1,000 square feet. Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10.
In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length.
Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart.
Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

SUNSEEKER UNVEILS THE 120 YACHT AT MONACO YACHT SHOW 2023

Sunseeker presents an all-new Superyacht concept at Monaco Yacht Show 2023. The stunning 120 Yacht is characterised by bold geometry, an athletic silhouette, immaculate style and effortless functionality.

The main deck saloon has the intention of becoming a private retreat, offering flexibility to furnish with statement loose furniture suited to the taste of the owner.

Andrea Frabetti, Chief Executive Officer at Sunseeker International, commented:

“We are excited to reveal the spectacular 120 Yacht, a new superyacht destined to join our dynamic product range. The inspiration for the 120 Yacht comes from our heritage superyachts, the iconic Sunseeker line is ever-present but has been completely reinvented, projecting the Superyacht Range forward fit for the future. We have worked very closely with Design Unlimited to realise a spectacular interior design for the 120 Yacht. Immediately we want owners to be met with a very special interior space that has high impact but with the comfort and practicalities of home.”

Sean Robertson, Sales and Marketing Director at Sunseeker International, added:

“We have a long history of producing industry-defining superyachts, dating as far back as 2000 with the 105 Yacht. For over 20 years, we have launched 14 superyacht lines and over 147 yachts over 100 feet sold worldwide. The 120 Yacht is a stunning new concept that, to the right owner, will fulfil their yachting dreams.”

The Sunseeker 120 Yacht will captivate with its elegant low-profile. Sunseeker's signature styling shines through, setting it apart from the competition with impressive glazing, raised stainless steel handrails and a sleek hardtop and raised pilot house.

Forward of the raised pilot house lies an elevated foredeck. An optional spa tub beneath the windshield complements a huge seating group comprising asymmetrical sofas and a four-person sun pad. The flybridge aft comprises two large seating arrangements for formal dining and socialising with space further aft for freestanding furniture. The aft flybridge and foredeck are linked via a starboard side walk-through in the coaming, promoting free movement between social zones.

Far from the traditional, the aft cockpit features a curved seating group for ten guests with dual symmetrical tables centralised around a four-person wet bar. Altogether, the exterior zones, seating arrangements and features provide an outdoor sanctuary.

At water level, a full-width rise and fall bathing platform features a gull-wing door that opens up to a day-head, shower and storage space. An integrated tender garage comfortably houses a 6-metre tender and two jet skis for unprecedented waterside enjoyment.

The 120 Yacht offers interior features designed to elevate the on-board experience. A sophisticated and rich interior with mid-century modern influences. The elective materials assist in maximising the natural light on board. The 120 Yacht introduces reflective surfaces to bounce the light around the space. Uninterrupted views from dining to lounging in the expansive open-plan main deck. Luxurious stone finishes, detailed centrepiece bulkheads and statement lighting pieces create an elegant space for owners to truly immerse themselves in sumptuous surroundings. Recessed lighting in shelving and ceiling coves envelope owners in rich comfort.

The main deck is subtly zoned with framing screens on the port and starboard side to offer a sense of separation between the formal dining and comfortable saloon without restricting the space on board. In-set marble flooring in the dining room complemented by matching geometric design in the ceiling defines this space, while the saloon benefits from more angular furniture selections. The generous galley on the port side provides all servicing requirements for the crew.

The aft cockpit leads directly into the main deck saloon furnished with comfortable freestanding furniture. A large sofa to the port side, with integrated tabletop and shelving units, and beautiful feature coffee table provides a convenient space for lounging. On the opposing side, comfortable armchairs with a side table provide enough seating for twelve guests. Forward of the saloon is an exceptional dining space with an intimate round table design choice for up to twelve guests.

Further forward on the starboard side lies the entrance to a phenomenal main deck owners suite. Re-engineered to improve accessibility, the owners stateroom benefits from a completely flush floor to the en suite which allows ease of movement between spaces. Furnished to an exceptionally high standard, this private oasis features loose furniture, stunning cabinetry with integrated mirror TV, marble bulkheads and floor-to-ceiling windows. A soft upholstered bed is complemented by feature bedside tables. Freestanding companion seating on the starboard side comprises a chaise longue with an armchair and small coffee table. The beautiful dressing room with a vanity desk, shelving and drawers, leads to the en suite with dual wash basins, finished with elegant brassware and a rich mix of marble, metallic finishes and rustic timber. A walk-in rain shower with a bench seat and dedicated water closet completes this stunning masterpiece. With scope for customisation, owners can truly create a space that reflects their personal style and preferences.
