Sailing ships & tall ship model kits.

A sailing ship is a seagoing craft that is propelled by the wind via the use of sails that are fixed on masts. In Ancient Egypt and the Mediterranean, river and coastal waterways were navigated by early sailing ships.

During the Age of Discovery (15th to 17th century), European sailing ships with primarily square rigs became common as they travelled across oceans between countries and throughout the globe. Although merchant ships made up the majority of sailing vessels, the Age of Sail also witnessed the growth of sizable fleets of heavily armed warships.

ENGLISH GALLEON GOLDEN HIND

Sir Francis Drakes ship of exploration was a small English galleon called the Golden Hind. Drake circumnavigated the world in this ship between 1577 and 1580 ( wikipedia entry ).  This sailing ship is a popular subject of wooden ship modelers, and Ages of Sail carries several different kits.

OcCre's  wooden model ship kit is probably the most popular at the time. This plank-on-bulkhead kit is easy enough for new builders, but includes beautiful quality wood, and carries an affordable price.

Constructo makes a much bigger ship model kit, which features more cast metal fittings, which have a better, more realistic appearance, but it probably for more advanced ship modelers.

We also carry Golden Hind kits from Mamoli , Mini-Mamoli , and offer a Deluxe Combo Set that includes tools, glues, and more, based on the OcCre model kit.

ARMED TRANSPORT HMS BOUNTY

HMS Bounty was an armed merchant ship in service with the British Royal Navy, and it was on a mission to collect breadfruit plants in the South Pacific, but the ship is most well known for the infamous mutiny against Captain Bligh by a crew led by Fletcher Christian ( wikipedia entry ). This 3-masted square-riggers is another popular subject among ship model builders.

Amati's kit may be the most beautiful of the available wooden model kits of Bounty. It is one recommended for advanced ship modelers, though a careful intermediate modeler might build a successful model

Amati's First Step kit is a small, solid hull, wooden model ship kit designed for the first time ship modeler, young or old.

Artesania Latina's kit  as well as OcCre's kit actually have one side of the ship open, showing the framing and life aboard. This is a more expensive kit, and far more challenging, but it's fun and interesting to look at when it's done.

Other Bounty kits include ones from Constructo Jr. , Constructo , Mantua , Caldercraft , Billing Boats , and more!

HMS VICTORY - NELSON'S FLAGSHIP

What ship modeler doesn't dream of building a model of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar? ( wikipedia entry ) The Victory was a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line that is one of the most complicated ship model builds available. Kits of the Victory are available from many manufacturers, and some of them are simplified versions of the ship, so you to choose the complexity of your build. Any version will still be a serious challenge.

Caldercraft makes what is currently the largest and most detail wooden kit of HMS Victory on the market. This 1/72-scale plank-on-bulkhead wooden model ship kit is highly prized among model ship builders.

Mantua makes a few different HMS Victory kits including this smaller 1/200-scale kit that's small in size, but big on detail. This kit will provide to be a challenge that won't take up a lot of shelf space.

Corel's HMS Victory kit is a classic wooden model ship kit that has been one of the more popular kits of Nelson's famed ship of the line.

Many other kits are available including those from Billing Boats, Constructo, Mantua/Panart , Mantua , Mamoli , and even a paper model version from Shipyard .

PIRATE SHIPS and BUCCANEERS

Pirates are all the rage in popular culture these days, though the real ones were murderous cutthroats and seagoing robbers. Still, who wouldn't love to build a wooden ship model of a pirate ship under sail, flying the Jolly Roger? At Ages of Sail, we have more pirate ship model kits than you can shake a hook at. Check out these popular wooden model ship kits:

OcCre's Buccaneer kit is a designed for beginning ship modelers, but offers the look of the classic pirate ship. The kit features a double-planked hull using a beautiful looking finish wood, and even includes a set of pre-sewn sails and, of course, a Jolly Roger flag.

Amati's First Step series Pirate Ship is ideal for the first time model builder, young or old. This easy to build series of wooden model ship kits feature a simple solid-hull designed for ease of construction.

Other pirate ship model kits include Amati's Adventure , Mini-Mamoli's Black Queen , Amati's Pirate Junk , OcCre's Corsair , Mantua's Black Falcon , Mamoli's Blackbeard Pirate Ship , and BlueJacket's Pirate Brig .

HMS ENDEAVOUR

The ships of the great explorers of the golden age of sail are a popular subject among those looking for a wooden ship model kit, and one of these is the ship of Captain Cook's famous voyages into the Pacific. 

OcCre's HMS Endeavour kit is one of the largest and most complete at 1/54-scale. This plank-on-bulkhead wooden model ship kit includes a good set of instructions that should make this challenging subject a bit easier. 

Caldercraft's wooden model ship kit is among the smallest of the available Endeavour kits, but it's scale accuracy is excellent, making it a popular kit.

Constructo's HMS Endeavour kit is designed to build into a classic and beautiful wooden ship model that is bound to make you proud when complete.

Other kits of the famous ship include ones from Billing Boats , Corel , Mantua , and paper model version from Shipyard .

POLAR EXPLORERS

Many expeditions have search the frigid waters of both the Arctic and the Arctic. The search for new territories and new trade routes have caused many to risk life and limb in their quests, and here are a few available to wooden model ship kit builders.

Astrolabe was a French warship which discovered many new territories for France in the 1800s, and Mantua makes a beautiful kit of this famous ship.

HMS Terror was one of two ships of the ill-fated Franklin Expedition sent into Arctic waters in search of the allusive Northwest Passage. OcCre's kit is a faithful reproduction of this bomb vessel turned explorer.

Gjoa was the first ship to find and successfully navigate the Northwest Passage. Roal Amundsen's ship is well represented by this beatiful wood ship model kit from Constructo of Spain.

Endurance was the Antarctic exploration ship of Sir Ernest Shacklton. OcCre's kit of this famed expedition ship is well detailed and has become quite a popular kit following the recent discovery of the sunken ship which was found amazingly intact.

I do admire those that can spend several years, adding detail after detail on a single model. I truly envy the patience they possess and, more importantly: the time they have available!

Most of the techniques I use are time-saving ways to fast-forward through mundane and time consuming tasks. Because, let's face it - there are only so many hours in a day...

Little by little I'm building up a small catalog of plans for download. First out is the civil war era USS Monitor and her nemesis - the CSS Virginia . As time permits, I'll add more plans.

Current projects include a balsa PT 109 and a number of other model ship plans. Waiting in the wings are ironclads, pirate ships, torpedo boats, battleships, tugs, destroyers, a New York pilot schooner and many other.

OK, enough talk, let's build something. And don't forget to have fun doing it!

Ships have played a crucial role in shaping the course of human history. From battleships to warships , these formidable vessels have navigated through treacherous seas, engaged in fierce battles, and transported goods and people across the globe. Throughout history, there have been numerous historic ships that have left their mark on the world and continue to fascinate us to this day.

One of the most famous historic ships is the HMS Victory , a British warship that played a pivotal role in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson, the HMS Victory helped secure a decisive victory for the British Navy against the combined forces of France and Spain. The ship, with its distinctive three masts and over 100 cannons, has been preserved and is now a popular tourist attraction in Portsmouth, UK.

The USS Constitution , also known as ‘Old Ironsides,’ is another iconic historic ship. This wooden frigate was commissioned by the United States in 1797 and played a significant role in the War of 1812. Its impressive firepower and sturdy construction earned it the nickname ‘Old Ironsides’ after withstanding cannon fire from the British Navy. Today, the USS Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship in the world and is docked in Boston Harbor as a museum ship.

The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 remains one of the most infamous maritime disasters in history. The luxury liner was deemed unsinkable and was equipped with the latest technology and amenities. However, it tragically collided with an iceberg on its maiden voyage and sank, resulting in the loss of over 1,500 lives. The sinking of the Titanic highlighted the need for stricter safety regulations and sparked advancements in ship design and safety measures.

The Mary Rose , a Tudor era warship, is a significant archaeological find that sheds light on the advanced shipbuilding techniques of the 16th century. The ship was the pride of the English Navy and played a crucial role in the battle against the French Navy in 1545. However, it sunk during the battle and was rediscovered in the 1970s off the coast of Portsmouth, UK. The preservation and excavation of the Mary Rose have provided valuable insights into Tudor maritime history.

From ancient wooden boats to modern steel behemoths, historic ships serve as a testament to the advancements in shipbuilding technology and the courage of sailors who sailed them into battles and uncharted waters. Working with a portfolio of corporate customers from different industries has expanded our collection to include model tankers, container ships, technical vessels and modern yachts.

We have carried this philosophy over 19 years of model making and have completed 200 custom built projects. You can build a model sailboat out of wood, and it’s really easy. This blog will show you how to build a basic wooden sailboat model that’s good for beginners and more experienced modelers alike.

Building a sailboat has been my dream since I was a kid. I have always wanted to build one from scratch, but never had the time or money to do so. Now that I am retired and have more time on my hands, I have decided to start building this beautiful wooden sailboat model from plans that I bought online. Here’s how you can build your own wooden sailboat:

How to build a Sailboat: Part 2

Before you can begin building a sailboat, you need to build a keel. The keel is the main part of your boat and without it, your boat would have no stability. This is what keeps the boat from tipping over when sailing in rough seas.

Next, you need to make a hull for your sailboat model by using pine wood or balsa wood strips that are glued together with sticky glue (which is sold at most craft stores). After making sure that all of the pieces fit together properly, start applying paint or stain onto each plank so they look real!

Afterwards, make sure there are no gaps between each plank so that water cannot get inside while sailing out on open waters! You’ll also want as many planks as possible because this will improve your ship’s speed! In fact…

How to Build a Sailboat: Part 3

Now that you have a hull, it’s time to turn your attention to the deck. The deck is what rests on top of the hull and provides a platform for sailing. The size, shape and placement of this part are all up to you based on what kind of ship you want to build.

Once you’ve made your decision about how big or small your deck should be, take measurements from below so that it fits snugly in place over the hull. You may need some help from someone with better eyesight than yours if parts don’t line up quite right (as they often won’t!). Then cut out some wood planks with a saw and glue them together using wood glue or waterproof epoxy (like Gorilla Glue). Afterward make sure everything fits snugly by sanding down any rough edges before painting or staining them!

At this point everything looks great with just one problem—it needs something more than just wood planks sticking out everywhere! So let’s start adding railings next….

How to Build a Sailboat: Part 4

Being able to build a sailing ship from scratch is a skill that many people never get around to learning. It’s not just hard, it’s also expensive. Not everyone can afford to go out and buy a kit where all the pieces are put together for them, nor do they want to spend hours in the garage cutting wood with their tool of choice. Here at Sailboat Model Building we’re here to help!

In this article we’ll be showing you how you can build your own sailboat from scratch using nothing more than some basic tools, maybe a table saw if you’re lucky enough, and some time on your hands (but not too much!). We’ll also teach about why building your own models is an important step towards being able to build real life sailing ships in the future!

You can make your own sailboats from wood.

You can build your own sailboat from wood. To do so, you’ll need:

• Wood for the boat’s hull and deck (about ¾ inch thick).
• Plywood for the boat’s keel and mast (about ½ inch thick).
• Fiberglass cloth to make a fiberglass hull that is stiffer than wood. It should be cut into 2-inch wide strips with an overlapping seam in the middle of each strip. The seams should run lengthwise along the sides of the boat instead of parallel with them so that they won’t show when you’re done painting it. The cloth needs to be about 6 inches longer than each side of your boat; use Velcro or duct tape at either end so that you can overlap them without getting any glue on yourself while working on this project!
• Epoxy resin glue which comes in two parts – one part hardens quickly while another part hardens slowly over several hours or days depending on how thickly they’re applied together! This makes sure everything stays put even when exposed to strong winds out there sailing around on open water!

Building a real sailboat from wood is a rewarding project that can be done with minimal tools and space. It’s also something you can do with your children as long as they’re old enough to understand safety precautions for working with sharp objects like saws or knives. I hope this blog has given you some insight into how it’s done!

ISA Yachts unveils new Viper line with first 38m model in production

Italian shipyard ISA Yachts has unveiled the ISA Viper, a new superyacht line comprising three models: the Viper 100, Viper 120 and Viper 140. Production has already begun on the first unit in the 38-metre Viper 120 series, with delivery scheduled for 2026.

Fulvio De Simoni is responsible for exterior and interior design, marking his first collaboration with the Palumbo Superyachts brand. Naval architecture has been completed in house. All models will be built in composite with carbon fibre reinforcements. 

A standout feature on board the Viper 120 is its cockpit, which has been laid out into three distinct zones: a lounge space with sofa seating, a coffee table, a large sunpad and side-opening balconies; an al fresco dining space for eight; the beach club, which is equipped with a multifunctional transformer. There is also a combined galley and bar, fitted with a tinted glass partition that tailors it to show cooking and more informal occasions.

Accommodation is across five cabins, all situated on the lower deck. The owner's cabin has a double bathroom and can be configured amidships to take advantage of the 7.9-metre beam or in the bow for a large, walk-in closet. 

The main deck features a second combined bar-galley and a saloon furnished with semi-circular sofas, armchairs and a 10-seater table. Interior space is also maximised by a singular, port-side walkway to the bow, while another balcony amidships provides direct ocean views from the sofas. The wheelhouse is also found on the main deck.

Meanwhile, the sundeck includes the second helm station, two large sunpads at the stern and a lounge area with sofas, an L-shaped bar and a 12-seater table. Another communal space is the bow, arranged with a circular pool, sunloungers and sofa seating.

A garage for a five-metre tender has been placed on the starboard side.

Equipped with three MAN or MTU engines, the Viper 120 is expected to reach a maximum speed of 33 knots and a cruising speed of 26 knots.

This follows the reveal of the first in build images of ISA Yachts' largest yacht to date, a custom 80-metre project designed by another first-time collaborator – Espen Øino .

The fastest, most secure Windows PCs ever built  

We introduced an all-new system architecture to bring the power of the CPU, GPU, and now a new high performance Neural Processing Unit (NPU) together. Connected to and enhanced by the large language models (LLMs) running in our Azure Cloud in concert with small language models (SLMs), Copilot+ PCs can now achieve a level of performance never seen before. They are up to 20x more powerful [1] and up to 100x as efficient [2] for running AI workloads and deliver industry-leading AI acceleration. They outperform Apple’s MacBook Air 15” by up to 58% in sustained multithreaded performance [3] , all while delivering all-day battery life.  With incredible efficiency, Copilot+ PCs can deliver up to 22 hours of local video playback or 15 hours of web browsing on a single charge. [4] That is up to 20% more battery in local video playback than the MacBook Air 15”. [5]

Windows now has the best implementation of apps on the fastest chip, starting with Qualcomm. We now offer more native Arm64 experiences than ever before, including our fastest implementation of Microsoft 365 apps like Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive and OneNote. Chrome, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, DaVinci Resolve and many more now run​ natively on Arm to give you great performance with additional apps, like Slack, releasing later this year. In fact, 87% of the total app minutes people spend in apps today have native Arm versions. [6] With a powerful new emulator, Prism, your apps run great, whether native or emulated.

Every Copilot+ PC comes secured out of the box. The Microsoft Pluton Security processor will be enabled by default on all Copilot+ PCs and we have introduced a number of new features, updates and defaults to Windows 11 that make it easy for users to stay secure. Entirely new, powerful AI experiences   

Copilot+ PCs leverage powerful processors and multiple state-of-the-art AI models, including several of Microsoft’s world-class SLMs, to unlock a new set of experiences you can run locally, directly on the device. This removes previous limitations on things like latency, cost and even privacy to help you be more productive, creative and communicate more effectively.  

Recall instantly  

We set out to solve one of the most frustrating problems we encounter daily – finding something we know we have seen before on our PC. Today, we must remember what file folder it was stored in, what website it was on, or scroll through hundreds of emails trying to find it.   

Now with Recall, you can access virtually what you have seen or done on your PC in a way that feels like having photographic memory. Copilot+ PCs organize information like we do – based on relationships and associations unique to each of our individual experiences. This helps you remember things you may have forgotten so you can find what you’re looking for quickly and intuitively by simply using the cues you remember. [7]

You can scroll across time to find the content you need in your timeline across any application, website, document, or more. Interact intuitively using snapshots with screenray to help you take the next step using suggested actions based on object recognition. And get back to where you were, whether to a specific email in Outlook or the right chat in Teams.

Recall leverages your personal semantic index, built and stored entirely on your device. Your snapshots are yours; they stay locally on your PC. You can delete individual snapshots, adjust and delete ranges of time in Settings, or pause at any point right from the icon in the System Tray on your Taskbar. You can also filter apps and websites from ever being saved. You are always in control with privacy you can trust.

Cocreate with AI-powered image creation and editing, built into Windows

Since the launch of Image Creator, almost 10 billion images have been generated, helping more people bring their ideas to life easily by using natural language to describe what they want to create. Yet, today’s cloud offerings may limit the number of images you can create, keep you waiting while the artwork processes or even present privacy concerns. By using the Neural Processing Units (NPUs) and powerful local small language models, we are bringing innovative new experiences to your favorite creative applications like Paint and Photos.

Combine your ink strokes with text prompts to generate new images in nearly real time with Cocreator. As you iterate, so does the artwork, helping you more easily refine, edit and evolve your ideas. Powerful diffusion-based algorithms optimize for the highest quality output over minimum steps to make it feel like you are creating alongside AI. Illustrator, Premiere Pro and more are coming this summer. And we’re continuing to partner to optimize AI in these apps for the NPU. For Adobe Creative Cloud customers, they will benefit from the full performance advantages of Copilot+ PCs to express their creativity faster than ever before.

GAROM: Artificial intelligences compete to build better real-time simulations

Reduced Order Models (ROM) are increasingly important mathematical tools for industry and engineering. By reducing the parameters of a system, they enable real-time simulations in scenarios that require numerous simulations for various system configurations, such as in Formula One car design or ship propeller design. This is crucial for scenarios demanding multiple simulations under slightly varying conditions or when full-scale simulations are impractical. Despite computational advantages, these methods struggle to reliably quantify the uncertainty of the models and simulations, making their integration into industrial pipelines challenging.

A recent study by SISSA, published in Nature Scientific Reports, proposes a new approach called GAROM, to simulate complex physical systems by combining artificial intelligence with reduced order methods. This creates a new type of model capable of quantifying associated uncertainty and thus “recognizing” when they make errors.

“The approach relies on the use of two neural networks: the generator, which produces simulation results with related uncertainties, and the discriminator, which tries to distinguish whether the input data comes from a simulation or has been generated,” explains Dario Coscia of SISSA mathLab, the mathematical modeling and scientific computing laboratory at SISSA, and the lead author of the research. “The goal is for the generator to fool the discriminator, while the discriminator becomes increasingly accurate at recognizing genuine simulations.”

This training process of two neural networks in competition with each other (Generative Adversarial Networks, GAN) was combined with Reduced Order Models (ROM) to create GAROM. This reduces computational costs like traditional ROMs but with additional advantages over both approaches.

The article demonstrates how GAROM can be applied to complex fluid dynamics problems, a crucial discipline for applications in fields such as aeronautics, maritime, medicine, and meteorology. The results are comparable to or even superior to the state-of-the-art, with the crucial addition of uncertainty quantification, addressing one of the most common problems of Data-Driven reduced models.
