S/Y Rainbow
About rainbow.
The multiple award-winning J Class yacht Rainbow was launched at the Holland Jachtbouw shipyard in 2012. This spectacular J was based on William Starling Burgess’ original Rainbow , winner of the America’s Cup in 1934. Her impressive track record, eco-consciousness, and technique, but also her luxury comfort and style make her to be one of a kind within J Class. Rainbow’s innovation and style have received a lot of praise from the industry. At the 2013 Showboat Design Awards she won the Naval Architecture Award for sailing yachts and was a finalist for the Interior and Exterior Design Awards for sailing yachts as well. On top of that, Rainbow won the award for Best Sailing Yacht for 40m+ at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards.
Rainbow is equipped with an elegant classic Art Deco interior, designed by deVosdeVries Design. This interior is characteristic for the glorious 1930s. In addition, she was the first to have an innovative, hybrid propulsion and power system. Her luxury accommodation has not in any way compromised her performance, illustrated by her proven track record on the race course.
Designed by Dykstra Naval Architects, Rainbow is true to her original lines plans. The aluminium hull was built by Bloemsma Aluminiumbouw and meets all the requirements of Lloyds Register, MCA Classification and the J Class Association.
Rainbow’s stunning finish is down to the Holland Jachtbouw craftsmen who worked tirelessly to provide exactly the correct finish both above and below decks, giving her a unique appeal. Unlike the original Rainbow , her interior is fully fitted for elegant comfort. She has beautifully detailed mahogany panelling, lightly stained oak cabin floors and is fitted with antique lighting fixtures and other high-end materials such as marble. All this contributes to the recreation of the exuberantly luxurious and characteristically elegant Art Deco style of the 1930s.
The panoramic 360-degree view from the raised deck saloon offers breathtaking views while comfortably lounging. Stairs in the deck cabin lead to the main saloon of Rainbow , which allows up to eight guests to enjoy their dinner at the custom-built mahogany dining table. Opposite of the table, the L-shaped settee/daybed and cocktail table offer space for lounging and entertainment.
Spread over three luxurious guest cabins, Rainbow can accommodate a total of eight guests. The master cabin has a queensize bed, wardrobes, a desk on either side and an en suite bathroom. The other guest cabins are equipped with twin beds and Pullmans. Apart from the guest cabins, this beautiful sailing yacht also accommodates six to eight crew members.
Rainbow is the first J Class to have a unique hybrid propulsion and power system. This state-of-the-art system was built by the Dutch company WhisperPower, in close collaboration with Holland Jachtbouw. The WhisperPower system consists of a 50kw main engine with an integrated flywheel generator to provide power. The Genverter 50 (Hy-Gen 50kw) is the second power source: a lightweight variable speed generator, which is very energy efficient, but also exceptionally quiet. Both power sources are connected to Li-ion batteries (Hy-store) which is where the power is stored. These batteries work as a buffer as well, enabling electrically cruising for a minimum of 3 hours. Rainbow’s batteries can be charged while sailing, drastically reducing the carbon footprint.
Even though she was built to participate in J Class races, Rainbow is also utterly fit for cruising and chartering. The mast and boom are made out of carbon by Southern Spars, the standing rigging is carbon fiber/ECsix and her running rigging is Dyneema.
Whether Rainbow is used for racing or cruising; sailing with her is always an unforgettable experience!
Her luxury accommodation has not in any way compromised her performance, illustrated by her proven track record on the race course.

Rainbow was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects and launched in 2012. She raced regularly and successfully until the Rolex Maxi Yacht Cup in 2014 after which there has been a hiatus, even though she has cruised extensively. She has recently been sold to a well known Kiwi owner who has a long track record in both offshore and inshore sailing, winning many of the most coveted top awards with a big variety of designs of all sizes, especially Maxis. Rainbow has been refitted by Dykstra Naval Architects through the winter of 2022 and spring 2023, optimising the deck layout further with inboard tracks and bringing structured luff sails on stream. Rainbow is said to be a very strong all round boat which is light relative to the other boats and smaller - 2m shorter than the bigger J’s - but is good in light airs, whilst being a stable boat and so goes well in the breeze as well.
The original Rainbow was designed by Starling Burgess for the 1934 America's Cup which she won 4-0 against Endeavour. The 1934 boats such as Rainbow were a big leap forwards from the 1930 boats with bigger, more powerful rigs and, many say, the nicest, truest hull shapes.
She will be sailed by the owner-driver with Kiwi round the world racer and America’s Cup Erle Williams as skipper.

RAINBOW Yacht for Sale
RAINBOW is a sailing yacht that is second-to-none. From her impressive performance and eco-consciousness to her luxurious comfort and style, she is truly unlike any other J Class. RAINBOW’s innovation and style have gained accolades in the industry. At the 2013 Showboats Design Awards, the yacht won the Naval Architecture Award for sailing yachts as well as was a finalist for the Interior and Exterior Design Awards for sailing yachts. In addition, RAINBOW won Best Sailing Yacht for 40m plus at the 2013 World Superyacht Awards.
This impeccable sloop sailing yacht was built by Holland Jachtbouw with naval architecture by Dykstra Naval Architects as a replica of the classic J Class yacht RAINBOW, which won the America’s Cup in 1934. The original RAINBOW’s hull was made of bronze plates on iron frames, while the new RAINBOW’s hull is made of aluminum to maximize the performance rules of the J Class organization.
Luxury yacht RAINBOW is the first J Class to have an innovative hybrid propulsion and power system. The yacht is operated on Hy-Store Li-ion batteries and a lightweight 50kw Hy-Gen variable speed generator combined with the 50kw main engine with an integrated flywheel generator to provide power. The sailing yacht’s batteries are able to be charged while sailing — lessening the carbon footprint. Furthermore, sailing yacht RAINBOW is an exceptionally quiet vessel, thanks to her innovative electric systems and floating interior.
She was built to participate in J Class racing as well as cruise and charter. The sailing yacht’s mast and boom are carbon by Southern Spars, the standing rigging is carbon fiber continuous composite EC6 and her running rigging is Dyneema. In addition, RAINBOW’s deck offers deluxe alfresco dining aft and forward.
RAINBOW’s interior showcases the classic ambiance of the Golden Age of Yachting. Raised and fielded mahogany panels offset by white walls and overhead, as well as lightly stained oak cabin soles, set the stage for this Art Deco setting. Marble, period light fixtures and other adornments reminiscent of the 1930s styling, create an upscale, elegant space. The interior was designed by Dykstra Design in collaboration with deVosdeVries Interior Design.
The sailing yacht’s raised deck salon provides impressive 360-degree views while lounging in protected comfort. A staircase from the deckhouse leads to RAINBOW’s main salon, which is ideal for unwinding after a fun day of sailing or entertaining guests. The area features dining for eight at a custom mahogany table, while opposite an L-shaped settee/daybed and cocktail table offer lounging and entertainment.
Eight guests are accommodated in RAINBOW’s three beautifully designed staterooms. The sailing yacht’s full-beam master stateroom features a plush, centerline queen-size bed with sofas, hanging closets and bureaus on either side. The stateroom is complete with an en-suite bath. Hudson River Ice Yacht Club trophy found in New Zealand
- May 17, 2024
RHINECLIFF- A Loving Cup Trophy from 1904 was found in the North Haven Hospice Thrift Shop in Mangawhai, New Zealand, by a woman who had never heard of ice yachting nor the Hudson River Club. Debi Shwer of Auckland, New Zealand was visiting Mangawhai, when she stopped into a thrift shop there. The Sterling Cup caught her eye, and she was determined to find out more.
Contacting HRIYPT President Robert Wills through the organization’s website, she described her objective of learning more about ice yachting after seeing the inscription on the trophy.
“I was just visiting my mother in law in Mangawhai for Easter. I wish I had a better look around (the thrift shop) because I was on a time limit from my husband waiting in the car! I am honestly fascinated by how it ended up in a charity shop in Northland New Zealand,” she said.
Shwer purchased the trophy and sent it to the club where it now sits as a part of their collection. The club plans is to loan it to an appropriate institution this winter where it can be displayed.
The Trophy was awarded on March 5, 1904, to the yacht “Rainbow”, a Hyde Park Ice Yacht Club boat owned by Capt. Owen Roberts, for winning a ten-mile race for Fourth Class Boats. Future President Franklin Roosevelt’s boat “Hawk” came in second.
“Rainbow” was recorded in club books in 1903, and then again in 1910. It was built by George Buckhout, preeminent ice yacht builder, in Poughkeepsie. Subsequently, Capt. Roberts sailed the boat in 1912 out of the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht Club in Red Bank, New Jersey, where it was outfitted with the most modern of hardware and sails, a “Marconi Rig” (the triangular sail used on most sailboats today), and renamed “Rainbow 2nd”. It then disappears from the records, until it shows up in Wisconsin.
Recently offered for sale there, it was purchased by the Lawrence Family of Newburgh, New York, who have been competitive ice yacht racers and Hudson River Ice Yacht Club members for generations, and were instrumental in the restoration of “Jack Frost,” the 1880 multiple world champion ice yacht of Archibald Rogers of Hyde Park, New York, and still sailed today by the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club.

Turquoise Yachts reveals new interior renderings of the 51m Rainbow II
Related articles, superyacht directory.
Turkish yard Turquoise Yachts has revealed a new colour scheme for the interiors of its 51 metre in-build sailing yacht Rainbow II .
The new interior renderings, from the boards of deVosdeVries Design , showcase a brighter colourway with the studio taking cues from Scandinavian design and employing light-coloured fabrics and leathers. The overall effect is “one of higher ceilings, more light and wider spaces on an already incredibly well laid out sailing yacht,” according to the yard.
Construction first started on Rainbow II by Dutch yard Holland Jachtbouw in 2014, after it was commissioned by the owner of 40 metre Rainbow and 46 metre Windrose of Amsterdam . When work ground to a halt in 2015, the unfinished vessel remained abandoned until 2019, when Turquoise Yachts ' chief executive Mehmet Karabeyoğlu decided to see the project through to completion in Turkey.
Now under construction at Turquoise’s Istanbul facility, Rainbow II 's design has been transformed from its initial schooner rig to a sloop set up in order to simplify the sailing plan and make the project more attractive to a potential buyer.
The original concept was inspired by a modern representation of a classic 1930s yacht but, courtesy of Karabeyoğlu's tweaks, has evolved into a "go anywhere, cruise around the world” sailing yacht.
Speaking to BOAT in 2020, Karabeyoğlu said: "The focus was kept firmly on safety, practicality, elegance and ease of sailing. This design will still be in fashion in 40 years’ time – it’s a timeless design.”
Standout features on board include a main deckhouse saloon adjacent to a main cockpit with ample space for outside dining. Numerous windows provide plenty of natural light to the interiors, which include a dining table large enough to seat 12 guests.
Accommodation is for 12 guests in a full beam owner’s cabin and four guest ensuite cabins, with crew quarters housing a team of nine in four cabins.
Delivery for the 1930s classic-inspired vessel is now slated for 2023, with the hull expected to be joined to the superstructure shortly. She is the third sailing yacht to be built by the Turkish yard, following the 33 metre Jazz Jr (now Eugenia VII ) and 33 metre Simba .

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ Divers, founder of the Bank of Tampa, dies
- Justine Griffin Times staff
A. Gerald “Jerry” Divers, credited as the founder of the Bank of Tampa, died Friday. He was 88.
Divers was known across Tampa Bay for his contributions to the community, serving on dozens of professional and philanthropic board of directors from the Tampa Museum of Art to the Florida Association of Blood Banks.
Divers began his banking career at The Exchange National Bank of Tampa in 1961. He was the bank’s commercial lending officer, head of the trust department and eventually became the executive vice president and director.
He was the president of the Flagship Bank of Tampa. In 1984 the bank was sold to SunTrust, and because of that sale, Divers and a group of local investors purchased the Independent Bank of Florida. The name was changed to the Bank of Tampa to reflect the owners’ intention to serve Tampa’s local business and professional community. Divers served as president and CEO of the bank until 2008.
“Because of Jerry’s patient, kind, modest and effective leadership, The Bank of Tampa became a steady and well-respected institution,” said Corey Neil, the current president and CEO of the bank in a statement. “We are all better for having known him.”
The Bank of Tampa grew to become the largest community bank headquartered in Tampa Bay, according to the media release. During his many years in the industry, Divers served on the boards of 10 banks and was a director of the Community Banks of Florida.
Divers grew up in Clearwater and attended St. Petersburg College before graduating from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in banking and finance. He also attended the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School and served four years at the Naval Air Station Cecil Field near Jacksonville and aboard a ship in the Western Pacific Ocean.
After serving in the Navy Reserve for 15 years, he retired with the rank of Lieutenant Commander, according to a media release.
He received many accolades for his work in Tampa Bay over the years, including the the Small Business Leader of the Year award from the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the H.L. Culbreath Profile in Leadership Award. Last year, he was named the Tampa Metro Citivan’s 2023 Outstanding Citizen of the Year.
“Jerry’s legacy goes well beyond The Bank of Tampa,” Neil said in a statement. “He was passionately active in the Tampa Bay community through service to his church, and was generously philanthropic with his time and talents.”
For more than 20 years, Divers served as president of the Southwest Florida Blood Bank. He served on the board and also as an officer of the Florida Association of Blood Banks.
