The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club boasts a strong, varied and competitive sailing division.  The local conditions are highly suited to trailer sailer style designs and the senior competitive activities are heavily represented by this class of boats, especially our substantial fleet of very competitive Blazer 23 class yachts along with Hartley, Farr and RL24.

Our main club competitions occur every second Saturday afternoon from 1pm in a number of series running all year long. Members also compete annually in major Queensland premiere events  like the Bay to Bay, Surf to City, Pearl Challenge, Sail Mooloolaba and St Helena Cup, predominantly from September to May each year. There is also a winter series running every three or four weeks during the winter months.

WAGS (Wednesday afternoons go sailing)

Saturday afternoon (fortnightly)

The Noosa Yacht & Rowing Club have a committed group of Sailors who love to race on the above days. It’s social, but it can get competitive, racing to win! Watch from the open balcony or join us as a crew member on the water. We invite experienced and would-be yachties to join us sailing and enjoy a thrilling race along the Noosa River.

Saturday afternoons are when the Club’s main competitions occur in a windward-leeward pursuit format.

These social sailing days are great events for those who want to try sailing for the first time or for sailors wishing to develop their skills or to simply socialise. Visitors just need to arrive no later than 1 pm for their first visit to secure a place. Come down to see us any time to volunteer as a crew member, after the race finishes there are prizes to be won and celebrated over a refreshing beer or two! Please bring along a bottle of water, hat, sunscreen and clothes that can get wet!. During the colder months, a jacket is recommended.

Our Youthsail Program is a very special part of our club and we pride ourselves on the resources and expertise we are able to offer and in return our young sailors have very successfully represented the club at regional, state and international levels and have a proud record of achievement.

Please see the Youthsail section for more details.

Melbourne Cup drops by

NOOSA will host one of its most high-profile guests today and she's dressed head to toe in 18-carat gold.

Jordan Mercer (front) returns as Noosa Heads SLSC ski paddlers prepare for the Melbourne Cup event on Friday. Picture: Geoff Potter

Don't miss out on the headlines from Noosa. Followed categories will be added to My News.

The $175,000 Melbourne Cup trophy will visit Noosa as part of the three-month 2012 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour around Australia and New Zealand.

Rob Neely, who runs Noosa-based Equine Nutrition Australia, organised the stopover as one of one of 25 legs of the Victoria Racing Club's 10th anniversary tour.

Mr Neely said he wanted to incorporate every facet of the Noosa community and get as much publicity for Noosa and the Sunshine Coast as possible.

"It's an iconic sporting trophy coming to what is essentially an iconic beach and tourist destination," he said.

"It never goes back to a town twice...it's never been to the Coast before.

"It's coming to Noosa for the first and last time."

The Cup's visit was somewhat of a reunion for Mr Neely.

"I'm absolutely thrilled because our family had a long association with the Cup," he said.

"I went to the Cup when I was 11 years of age and went for 18 years straight. My family went to the Melbourne Cup every single year, so it means a lot to me."

The Cup will visit the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club, St Theresa's Catholic Secondary School, St Thomas More Catholic Primary School, Sunshine Beach State School, Ricky's Restaurant, Carramar Senior Citizens Home, Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club Supporters Bar and travel on the Noosa Ferry.

But the main event will be seeing it winched out of a helicopter and into a surf boat in front of Noosa's Main Beach.

The Cup will be on the beach in front of Noosa Heads Surf Club in the afternoon so the public can take photos, while the club hosts a 24-person surf ski race, representing the 24 Melbourne Cup horses.

Sheila Laxon, the first female trainer of a Melbourne Cup winner, Ethereal in 2001 will join Wendy Green, the owner of 1999 Cup winner Rogan Josh at the charity lunch at Ricky's Restaurant, with proceeds going to Angel Flight.

The tour highlights the contribution of the 152-year-old race to social, sporting and racing culture.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

noosa yacht club melbourne cup

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

noosa yacht club melbourne cup

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

noosa yacht club melbourne cup

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

noosa yacht club melbourne cup

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

noosa yacht club melbourne cup

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

noosa yacht club melbourne cup

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

noosa yacht club melbourne cup

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
