Today, the Atlantic City Boardwalk is 60-ft wide and 6 miles long. The late 1800s were a period of tremendous growth and real estate boom, as the wealthy built 2-3 story beach cottages, and amusement piers started popping up. Now a National Historic Landmark, Lucy the Elephant, a 6-story elephant built in 1881 to promote real estate sales and attract tourists to Atlantic City, is the oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction in America! A local ordinance kept hotels, restaurants, and shops on one side of the boardwalk and amusement piers on the other (oceanside). During the Roaring 20s, Atlantic City was the scene—a hedonistic playground for politicians, Mafia, and ordinary folk looking for a weekend escape. Prohibition was mostly unenforced, and the Boardwalk continued as the place to be seen during the 1930s – 40s. Looking for a way to extend tourism beyond the summer season, the Miss America Pageant got its start 1930-1935 and became synonymous with Atlantic City since Convention Hall became the venue in 1940.

Atlantic City’s oldest theme park and most successful family-oriented attraction is Steel Pier, opened in 1898. The 1000-ft pier located across from Hardrock Hotel & Casino, features 20+ rides and attractions, carnival games, fast food, snacks, and refreshment stands. Recently added is The Wheel, a 227-ft high Ferris-type wheel with 40 climate-controlled gondolas offering great views of the ocean and boardwalk cityscape. After WWII, with air travel making distant destinations possible for tourists, Atlantic City went into a decline. When the Casino Gambling Referendum passed in 1976, investors saw an opportunity to revitalize Atlantic City as an east coast gambling mecca to rival Las Vegas, Nevada. Atlantic City had a good run, with many glitzy, fantastical casinos and hotels lining the Boardwalk, but everything has its limitations; overdevelopment and competition from other states (CT, NY, PA) along with economic recessions, and downturns led to major hotel and casino failures. Its light still shines today and is open to public visitation. Historic Gardners Basin maritime park and marina located on a protected channel along back bays of the Absecon Inlet, is directly across from the State Marina and USCG Station. This family-friendly attraction offers sightseeing and fishing cruises, restaurant, Crafters Village shopping, and the 3-story Atlantic City Aquarium. Gardners Basin was once a haven for rumrunners during Prohibition years and port for commercial fishing fleets.

The nearby Smugglers Cove boathouses were originally homes built by rumrunners directly over their docks to offload bootleg liquor in secrecy. This historic park is slated for a $3.6 million renovation. Some dockage is available, but services and facilities are very minimal. The Frank S. Farley State Marina is in a sheltered natural harbor of Absecon Bay. The marina is a public facility of NJ Parks & Forestry, managed by the Golden Nugget Casino Resort. This marina offers full services, such as pump-out, and amenities. 630 floating slips (seasonal, winter, transient dockage) accommodate vessels to 300-ft length and has a dock depth of 8-ft. The State Marina received the Boaters Choice Award in 2019.

Kammerman’s Marina and Siren’s Bar & Grill with easy, quick access to the ICW and Atlantic Ocean, is conveniently located near the casinos, Boardwalk, and beaches of Atlantic City. This family owned and operated since 1961 marina offers full services and amenities, and transient dockage as well as seasonal. Floating docks are 50’ x 5’draft; fixed docks are 100’ x 6’ draft; fuel dock is 160’ x 7’ draft. Great marina for fueling, offering ValvTect Marine Fuel; gas and diesel.

Killer whales attack and sink sailing yacht in the Strait of Gibraltar — again

A sailing yacht sunk in the Strait of Gibraltar on Sunday after an unknown number of orcas  slammed into the vessel with two people on board and caused a water leak, officials said. Both crew members were rescued by a passing oil tanker, said Spain's maritime rescue service, marking the latest killer whale attack on a boat in what has become a pattern in recent years.

The incident happened at around 9 a.m. local time in the narrow strait between Spain and Morocco that has become a notorious site of human interactions with pods of killer whales that, for reasons still not fully understood, ram into boats and at times even sink them . In this case, crew members on board the SV Alboran Cognac yacht put out an emergency call for an evacuation after they encountered orcas roughly 14 miles off the coast of Cape Spartel. 

The crew members reported feeling blows to the hull of the vessel and rudder, which was damaged by the whales, the rescue service said. The agency's coordination center in Tarifa, on the Spanish side of the Strait of Gibraltar, helped arrange for their evacuation via the tanker MT Lascaux. The tanker was able to collect the crew members from the sinking yacht within the hour, and they disembarked in Gibraltar before 10:30 a.m. They abandoned the SV Alboran Cognac, which proceeded to completely disappear into the ocean.

Anyone sailing through waters from the Gulf of Cádiz in southern Spain and the Strait of Gibraltar, either in a larger motorized vessel or a personal sailing boat, is advised to avoid certain areas that the maritime rescue service marks as potentially dangerous spots for orca interactions. The greatest threats exist between May and August, when officials say that pods of killer whales are most commonly seen in those parts of the Atlantic. 

But previously recorded incidents suggest those dangers may be present at any time. Last October, a Polish boat touring company reported that a pod of orcas had managed to sink one of its yachts after repeatedly slamming into the steering fin for 45 minutes, causing it to leak. Last June, two sailing teams competing in an international race around the world reported frightening scenarios in which multiple orcas rammed into or pushed up against their boats or as they sailed west of Gibraltar. 

No one on board any of the vessels was hurt in those encounters, but the documented rise in confrontational behavior has researchers and sailors trying to determine why orcase have attempted to sink or capsize so many boats off the coasts of Spain and Portugal. 

Some sailors have even resorted to blasting thrash metal music in a bid to deter the apex predators.

Reports of orcas interacting with humans have more than tripled in the last two years or so, according to the research group GTOA, which has documented hundreds of such incidents in the region since 2020. But some of the latest data points to possible changes in the orcas' etiquette, with the group reporting only 26 interactions in the Strait of Gibraltar and Bay of Biscay areas between January and May of this year. That number is 65% lower than the number of interactions recorded in the region over the same months last year, and 40% lower than the average number of interactions recorded in the same months between 2021 and 2023, according to GTOA.

A body was found inside one of two mud-covered vehicles pulled from the Cooper River in New Jersey.

The unidentified remains were discovered when the cars were yanked up near Cooper River Park in Pennsauken around 3 p.m. Thursday, CBS reported .

The vehicles appeared to be completely covered in mud, but it was not immediately clear how long they had been in the river or how they got there, the report noted.

Teams dressed in white jumpsuits swarmed around both models, while tents appeared to obscure most of the possible evidence.

The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office in investigating the find, CBS said.
