Shining Light: Azimut Grande 36M
- June 29, 2023
Following Alberto Manciniâs work on Azimutâs Grande Trideck, the Italian shipyard entrusted him to design its second-biggest superyacht, with the new Grande 36M also featuring a stunning interior by long-time collaborator Achille Salvagni. Words: Clare Mahon Photos: Azimut
The 116ft Grande 36M is Azimutâs second-largest superyacht
Azimut just keeps adding temptation to temptation with new models launched at a fast clip. For the Grande 36M, the Italian shipyard called in frequent collaborators Alberto Mancini and Achille Salvagni to create a superyacht where style meets substance without dictating a playbook to potential owners.
Alberto Mancini Yacht Design has penned three yachts in the Azimut Grande series, bringing a real family feeling to the line-up by using similarly clean and simple lines across the size range. Mancini also designed the Grande Trideck (38m) and Grande 26M, both of which have been sold into Asia by regional dealer Marine Italia, illustrating the universal appeal of the new models.
The bow of the upper deck has a large sofa with two tables, a quadruple sunpad and a spa pool
âI always try to create a dialogue between traditional and modern, land-based and seafaring, keeping in mind that a hull has to remain a hull,â Mancini says.
While the yachts he has designed for the Grande range have long sweeps of glass that contrast with structural elements and bring lots of light into the interiors, Mancini never overdoes it.
The sun deck has a bar and lots of seating and sunbathing areas
âHuge, glazed surfaces that cut hull lines are not necessary for a modern interior,â he says. âAs a designer, I feel I should coax owners back into a more seafaring world where a yachtâs lines are beautiful in themselves. Itâs also important not to forget that we are at sea and have to respect it.â
Respect for the sea played an important part in the design process of the Grande 36M. Constructed in GRP with elements of the superstructure and the beach platform in weight-saving carbon-fibre to improve efficiency, the hull shape is the latest evolution of the D2P (Displacement to Planing) technology designed and engineered by Pierluigi Ausonio Naval Architecture (PLANA) with Azimut-Benettiâs R&D Department.
The fold-out beach club welcomes guests to the Grande 36M
This type of hull has double chines that allow it to cruise smoothly on its broad upper chine in displacement mode, then transition to planing mode at higher speeds, skimming along on its lower chine and deflecting the water.
Another key feature of this hull is the wave-piercer bow, which adds to efficiency peaks that the yard claims can reach 30 per cent in displacement mode compared to traditional hard chine hulls, earning the Grande 36M a place among Azimutâs Low Emission Yachts, which now applies to more than half the yachts in its portfolio.
The aft cockpit has a bar to starboard and a table for alfresco dining
Twin 2,200hp MTU engines are standard, but owners can opt for 2,400hp versions, offering a top speed of 24 knots and cruising speed of 18 knots.
ONBOARD ATTRACTIONS
Lots of the fun to be had on a seafaring vacation comes when youâve jumped off the yacht, and aboard the Grande 36M itâs easy due to a transom that opens out to become a beach platform backed by a beach club. Guests enjoying the aft cockpit can easily keep an eye on whateverâs going on in the water through glass bulwarks.
The lounge seating in the âliving & diningâ version of the main-deck saloon
The 116-footer was conceived to be adaptable to diverse configurations to meet a variety of lifestyle needs. The yachtâs large, open volumes are punctuated by large windows â many of which are actually sliding doors â and can be furnished with freestanding pieces in a variety of layouts, and thatâs where architect Achille Salvagni steps in.
âI am an architect, not a decorator, and I think thatâs why the interiors I design stand out,â Salvagni says. âI want to sculpt the space Iâm working with and give it character, dignity and strength. Itâs not a question of pretty things placed here and there. The materials and the lines I work with must have tension. I donât want corners because they break the line; I want curves that join and flow.â
Formal dining in the main âliving & diningâ version of the saloon
The Grande 36M is filled with custom pieces purpose-designed by Salvagni for the yacht. âI donât use production pieces in my interiors because Iâm not filling up a furniture showroom. Every interior I design is exclusive and unique.â
Add beautiful and luxurious to exclusive and unique and you get the gist of the main saloon. Large windows, open air and organically shaped furnishings in the colours of a day of sunshine make this a standout space, with living and dining areas that connect seamlessly to the aft guest cockpit with its bar and social area. You only perceive glamour because practical things like a large TV screen and storage spaces are concealed and integrated into the dĂŠcor.
The full-beam ownerâs suite has full-height windows on both sides
Forward on the main deck is the full-beam ownerâs suite, with a centrally placed bed and two floor-to-ceiling picture windows.
There are four additional guest cabins on the lower deck, comprising a VIP with its wash basin integrated with the rest of the cabinâs furnishings, a double and twins with Pullman berths, all fitted to the same level of good taste and luxury as the rest of the yacht.
The aft upper deck features two adjustable sunpads/sofas either side of a foldable table
Four crew cabins, also on the lower deck, ensure thereâs enough accommodation to assure a high level of service quality. The crew use separate pathways from guests for privacy.
SEMI-WALKAROUND UPPER DECK
The upper deck has a spectacular skylounge with three sets of sliding glass doors, one that leads to the aft dining and lounging area, and others on both sides that connect to the side decks. When all the doors are open, the lounge seems more like a breezy beach pavilion than an indoor space.
The skylounge can be open on three sides
Add that you can walk all the way around from the aft deck dining and lounging area to the spa pool and sunpads on the foredeck without changing floor levels and youâre assured that this is a deck that will get plenty of use â and will provide plenty of memorable moments.
In fact, the entire sun deck above is an option on the Grande 36M, because the shipyard predicts that many owners will feel they have plenty of outdoor spaces without it and will chose the sleeker âcoupĂŠâ version of the yacht.
The skylounge featuring the âmedia roomâ layout
With a winning team of designers bringing diverse talent and skillsets to the Grande 36M, Azimut has created a winner. This is a yacht that doesnât dictate to its owners, it adapts to their needs, assuring that it will be their favourite vacation home away from home for years to come.

With her original and modern design, the Azimut Grande 36M is a Superyacht that synthesizes cutting edge style and attitude. From the unprecedented semi-walkaround upper deck inspiring freedom of movement to the fully retractable side windows posing a special gateway to the sea, all elements contribute to visually blend interior and exterior spaces.
Using GRP for the highly efficient D2P â Displacement to PlaningÂŽ hull and Carbon Fiber for the superstructure, with the skills of Alberto Mancini (exteriors) and Achille Salvagni (interiors) responsible for the design of this forward-thinking Trideck yacht, this latest addition to the Grande Collection family was undoubtedly created by internationally renowned designers.
With the AZIMUT GRANDE 36M, Azimut introduced the first semi-walkaround upper deck that runs flush from the stern to almost the extreme bow, offering unprecedented freedom of movement. The side windows are fully retractable, joining the skylounge with the aft terrace to create an immense barrierless area. Wrapping around to the bow, we come to a whirlpool tub made entirely of glass and a sunbathing area equipped with every comfort.

For Sale: 2020 Azimut Yachts 60 Fly
- By Donny Gilbert
- May 17, 2024
Soul Mates, a 2020 Azimut 60 Fly, is equally at home doing extended island-hopping voyages in the Caribbean, or taking a relaxing jaunt down the coast for a long weekend. This is a one-owner yacht that is ready for its next cruise and is on the market at a reduced price of $1.59 million.Â
MarineMax stated that â Soul Mates is a well-cared for, fully equipped boat with extensive premium options tailored for exploring the Florida Keys and the Bahamas.âÂ
Soul Mates has a solid 79,400-pound displacement, but this yacht can move . Powered with twin Volvo Penta D13 diesel engines, this Azimut 60 Fly will promptly accelerate up to 32 knots. The comfortable cruise speed is around 26 knots. Pull the throttles back to around 21 knots to increase fuel efficiency and extend the vesselâs cruising range to 360 nautical miles. A Seakeeper gyrostabilizer virtually eliminates roll, enhancing cruising comfort. A bow thruster helps during close-quarter maneuvers.Â
Owners can entertain several guests on Soul Mates spacious flybridge, aft deck and foredeck. Access to the flybridge is via a set of steps from the aft deck. The flybridge has a fiberglass hardtop that covers the helm to port, cushioned bench-style seats to starboard and a C-shaped dinette abaft the helm. The aft deck is open with sofas to port and starboard, allowing guests to relax underway and soak up the sun. Fire up the barbecue for lunch and enjoy a few beverages too. The flybridge ice maker and refrigerator are built into the wet bar, which is a plus for convenience.
Soul Matesâ cockpit is shaded by the flybridge overhang with a forward-facing, bench-style seat with table and chairs and a teak sole. Guests can relax watching a football game, or easily access the swim platform, foredeck and salon. A swim platform provides seamless water access. Walk up to the foredeck, which has a convertible setup. All the seats convert to sun pads or change it up with a dinette-style layout for sundowners with friends. If the sun gets too hot, the foredeck sun shade sail will help keep the space cool.
Enter the salon through a sliding glass door from the aft deck. Windows flanking the salon allow natural light to flow through the main deck. Guests can relax on sofas to both port and starboard, or enjoy a meal at the dinette to starboard. The dinette is directly across from the galley and the yachtâs designers built in a full-size window, creating panoramic views. A hi-lo table folds open with seating for four adults.  Â
The galley is cozy and centrally located. Itâs equipped with a Miele cooktop and oven, a refrigerator/freezer and wine chiller. An array of cabinets handle stowage for cruising provisions. Upper cabinets over the cooktop and sink were removed to enhance the views through the galley window.Â
After a long day on the water, owners and guests can retire to one of three staterooms. The master stateroom has a king-sized berth with an en suite head. Owners will find plenty of stowage space for extended journeys and even a built-in safe. The forepeak VIP stateroom has a queen-sized berth and two additional guests can relax in the third guest stateroom with twin-sized berths. There is a crew space with twin-sized berths, which could also be used for extra stowage or for a couple of teenagers looking for privacy.Â
Where is Soul Mates located? The yacht is currently lying in Fort Myers, Florida.

Style, innovation and quality. Luxury yachts that also stand for value
One of the first reasons why an owner chooses an Azimut yacht is nearly always beauty. Then, the intrinsic values of the product come into play: its comfort, safety features, level of technology and elegant living solutions. Finally, owners want something more between the time of making their choice and the purchase. They want the boatyard that builds the yacht of their dreams to be able to boast a significant history, to have consolidated a network of services, to reflect a successful image and, above all, to be a sound company. In all these aspects, Azimut Yachts can deliver results and guarantees of a true industry leader.
A luxury yacht has value if that value is long-lasting. If its beauty can challenge the seasons. If its style is a source of inspiration for those who are passionate about the sea, and not just a fashion follower. The design of Azimut yachts shapes the Italian essence behind the brand. Each model in the Azimut range reflects the attention to detail and the style excellence of Italian manufacturing.
The construction of luxury yachts requires production efficiency, advanced technologies and an ability to innovate. Boat owners who choose Azimut choose luxury, hi-tech yachts, built at cutting-edge boatyards where the Group's investments in research culminate. Azimut-Benetti's R&D Centre develops technologies that are unique worldwide, for an experience at sea that is effortless and safe. In fact Azimut's technologies are always designed to deliver safety and comfort to yacht owners.
Design, technology, materials, components and human expertise are all Azimut hallmarks that meet a higher standard: quality. This philosophy is possible because Azimut has put its income back into the company, over more than forty years, investing in personnel training, technological research, product development and the upgrading of plants and structures. Only in this way has it been possible to be the number one boatyard of choice worldwide for the construction of megayachts for 12 years running
From 1969 to the present: The history of Azimut
The beginnings.
Azimut Yachts came about in 1969, when the young university student Paolo Vitelli founded Azimut Srl, and began chartering sailing boats.
The first steps towards success
In 1970 some prestigious yachting brands appointed the company to distribute their boats in Italy. Azimut quickly expanded its operations: Apart from distribution, it began to design new yachts. In a joint venture with Amerglass, it designed the AZ 43â Bali, a mass-produced fibreglass boat, which was an immediate success. The company gradually expanded its range, focussing on the lower end of the market - with the launch of the AZ 32â Targa in 1977, the âFord Tâ of the boat world - and upper end too - (with the memorable dĂŠbut of the Azimut 105â Failaka in 1982, the biggest mass-produced yacht in fibreglass at the time).
The acquisition of Benetti and the start of own production
In 1985 Azimut acquired Benetti. This historical brand, based in Viareggio, had been building boats since 1873, and designed the concept of the megayacht. Azimut was now able construct its own yachts, defining new style and industry standards that would go on to revolutionise the boat building industry, such as: large frameless windows, electric seats, and walnut interiors.
New production sites and international recognition
From the late nineties onwards, with the acquisition of new boatyards at Fano, the restructuring of the Benetti boatyards at Viareggio and the construction of a new site at Avigliana, in the province of Turin, Azimut went on to become the foremost builder of yachts and megayachts. This leadership position was confirmed in subsequent seasons, thanks to numerous business successes and an investment policy which has consolidated Azimut's technological and production capacities over the years, with sites now established in Brazil.
Respect for the environment, turned into tangible results
A yacht with an eco-friendly engine, like a sailing boat? When we achieve this goal in the future, we'll know that the first important steps in this direction were taken at the beginning of this millennium, with projects such as the Magellano 50, the first motor yacht below 60 feet to be awarded RINA Green Plus notation. The Magellano 50 has embraced all the technical and design skills used by Azimut for environmental protection, and is proof of the important results that can be achieved by a company sustainability programme that focuses on the entire value chain, from developing concepts for alternative boats with a low environmental impact to clean production processes.
Azimut Yachts was awarded ISO 14001 certification, for its consistent and effective management system aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its operations. Since 2004 the company has used the Core Infusion lamination system and in 2007 research began on the use of low environmental impact paints and resins.
To maximise the eco-compatible standards of the yachts produced at its boatyards, Azimut decided to adopt RINA principles and to achieve RINA Green Plus notation. The result is a remarkable range of innovative solutions, including first and foremost hybrid propulsion motors, to sail with a near-zero reduction in noise levels and lower consumption on short day trips. In addition to: high performance propellers, LED lighting, anti-UV film on windows for better thermal efficiency and environmentally compatible materials. Experiments continue at Azimut's research centres, with the introduction of nanotechnologies to develop a longer-lasting anti-fouling coating with a lower impact for marine life.
Azimut Yachts's unrivalled position in the pleasure boat industry has spurred it on to become a leader in environmental sustainability too, with projects and solutions that are always one step ahead of the competition.

Russian Disinformation Videos Smear Biden Ahead of U.S. Election
Many of the videos are trying to appeal to right-wing voters with fake messages about President Biden, experts say.

By Julian E. Barnes and Steven Lee Myers
Julian Barnes, who covers U.S. intelligence agencies, and Steven Lee Myers, who covers misinformation, have been reporting on Russian efforts to influence the 2024 presidential election.
Last month, a video began circulating on social media purporting to tell the story of an internet troll farm in Kyiv targeting the American election.
Speaking in English with a Slavic accent, âOlesyaâ offers a first-person account of how she and her colleagues initially worked in support of President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. Then, she says, after a visit by mysterious Americans who were âprobably C.I.A.,â the group began sending messages to American audiences in support of President Biden.
âWe were told our new target was the United States of America, especially the upcoming elections,â the woman in the video says. âLong story short, we were asked to do everything to prevent Donald Trump from winning the elections.â
The video is fake, part of an effort to cloud the political debate ahead of the U.S. elections.
U.S. officials say the video is consistent with Russian disinformation operations as internet warriors aligned with Russia appear to be honing their strategy. Some of the old tactics of 2016 or 2020 could be used again, with new refinements.
An analysis of the video done by U.S. intelligence agencies found that the voice of âOlesyaâ was synthetically generated, an intelligence official said Thursday, a potential sign of how Russian operatives are blending new techniques with old tactics.
While there has been much hand-wringing over the role that artificial intelligence could play this year in fooling voters, current and former officials said that videos were one of the most immediate threats.
Microsoft said the video featuring âOlesyaâ probably came from a group it calls Storm-1516, a collection of disinformation experts who now focus on creating videos they hope might go viral in America.
The group most likely includes veterans of the Internet Research Agency, a Kremlin-aligned troll farm that sought to influence the 2016 election. The agency was run by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the founder of the Wagner mercenary group who led a rebellion against the Kremlin and then was killed in a plane crash that American and allied officials believe was orchestrated by Russian intelligence agencies.
Microsoft said the group also included people associated with Valery Korovin, the figurehead of an obscure Moscow-based think tank called the Center for Geopolitical Expertise, a conservative organization affiliated with Aleksandr Dugin, an ultranationalist writer who faces U.S. sanctions for his role in recruiting fighters for the war.
Russian operatives are leaning into videos, many of them that falsely purport to be made by independent journalists or whistle-blowers. The videos, opposed to blog or social media posts, are more likely to spread beyond the conspiratorial fringes of America and become part of mainstream discourse.
On Wednesday afternoon, Avril D. Haines, the director of national intelligence, told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Russia was the most active threat to the coming election. Russia, she said, tries to erode trust in democratic institutions, exacerbate social divisions and undermine support for Ukraine.
âRussia relies on a vast multimedia influence apparatus, which consists of its intelligence services, cyberactors, state media proxies and social media trolls,â she said. âMoscow most likely views such operations as a means to tear down the United States.â
China has a sophisticated influence operation and is increasingly confident in its ability to affect election results, Ms. Haines said. But she added that the intelligence community assessed that China did not try to influence the 2020 presidential election, and that so far there was no information that China would be more active in this yearâs contests.
Senator Mark Warner, Democrat of Virginia and the chairman of the Intelligence Committee, said that adversaries had a greater incentive than ever to intervene in elections but that the public had too often treated such meddling âas trivial or quaint.â
Clint Watts, the general manager of Microsoftâs Threat Analysis Center, said pushing out written disinformation with bots was largely a waste of time â in 2024 it is disinformation video that has the best chance of spreading with American audiences.
The C.I.A. video, Mr. Watts said, was a classic Russian tactic: accuse your adversary of the very thing you are doing. âWhen they say thereâs a troll farm operated by Zelensky in Ukraine going after the U.S. election, what theyâre saying is this is what weâre doing,â Mr. Watts said.
Walter Trosin, a spokesman for the C.I.A., said the agency was not involved in the activities described in the video.
âThis claim is patently false and precisely the type of disinformation that the intelligence community has long warned about,â Mr. Trosin said. âC.I.A. is a foreign-focused organization that takes our obligation to remain uninvolved in American politics and elections very seriously.â
At the Senate hearing, Ms. Haines praised the C.I.A. for calling out the video publicly, saying it was an example of how the government will identify disinformation by Russia or other countries during the current election.
Multiple groups in Russia push out disinformation aimed at America . In addition to the videos, researchers and government officials say, Russia has created a handful of fake American local news sites and is using them to push out Kremlin propaganda , interspersed with stories about crime, politics and culture.
Gen. Paul M. Nakasone, who retired from the Army this year and is the former director of the National Security Agency, said the best defense to Russian disinformation remained the same: identifying it and publicizing the propaganda push. The United States, he said, needs to expand its information sharing both domestically and around the world so people can identify, and discount, disinformation spread by Moscow.
âThe great antidote to all of this is being able to shine a light on it,â said General Nakasone, who last week was named as the founding director of Vanderbilt Universityâs new Institute for National Defense and Global Security. âIf they are trying to influence or interfere in our elections, we should make it as hard as possible for them.â
Some mainstream Republicans have already warned fellow lawmakers to be wary of repeating claims that originated in Russian disinformation or propaganda.
âWe see directly coming from Russia attempts to mask communications that are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia messages, some of which we even hear being uttered on the House floor,â Representative Michael R. Turner, an Ohio Republican who is the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told CNNâs âState of the Unionâ on April 7.
Russiaâs information warriors have pushed fake videos to spread lies about Ukraine , aimed at undermining its credibility or painting it as corrupt. Republican politicians opposed to sending more aid to Ukraine have repeated baseless allegations that Mr. Zelensky has tried through associates to buy a yacht, disinformation that first appeared on a video posted to YouTube and other social media sites.
Most of the videos produced by Storm-1516 fail to get traction. Others come close. A video pushed out on a Russian Telegram channel purported to show Ukrainian soldiers burning an effigy of Mr. Trump, blaming him for delays in aid shipments.
The video was highlighted on Alex Jonesâs right-wing conspiracy site, InfoWars, and other English-language outlets. But it was quickly discounted â the purportedly Ukrainian soldiers had Russian accents and were masked.
âThis campaign has been working to advance some of Russiaâs key objectives, particularly that of portraying Ukraine as a corrupt, rogue state that cannot be trusted with Western aid,â Mr. Watts said.
Since last August, Microsoft has identified at least 30 videos produced by Storm-1516. The first ones were aimed at Ukraine. But others are trying to influence American politics by appealing to right-wing audiences with messages that Mr. Biden is benefiting from Ukrainian assistance.
Intelligence officials, lawmakers and security firms have warned about the use of artificial intelligence by China, Russia and other nation states intent on spreading disinformation. But so far, Russian groups like Storm-1516 have mostly avoided using A.I. tools, according to security firms.
âMany of the A.I. campaigns are easy to detect or unwind,â said Brian Murphy, the general manager of national security at Logically, which tracks disinformation. âA.I. is getting better, but it is still not at the stage this year wherein it is going to be used at the scale and with the quality some predict. Maybe in a year or so.â
Both government officials and outside experts, however, have said that A.I.-altered audio had proved more effective than altered videos. At the hearing on Wednesday, Ms. Haines highlighted a fake audio recording released in Slovakia two days before its parliamentary election. While quickly identified as fake, news and government agencies struggled to disclose the manipulation and the target of the fake recording lost a close election.
Outside experts have said that artificial intelligence has been used in some Russian propaganda videos to obscure accents. It is not clear exactly why a synthetic voice would have been used in the fake video of the C.I.A. troll farm.
But on Wednesday, Ms. Haines said artificial intelligence and other innovations âhave enabled foreign influence actors to produce seemingly authentic and tailored messaging more efficiently at greater scale and with content adapted for different languages and cultures.â
For now, though, basic videos like the C.I.A. troll farm or yacht video that purport to have authentic narrators with access to exquisite information are the most prevalent threat.
In 2016, Russian-controlled propagandists could push out fake news articles or social media posts and, in some cases, have an impact. But now, those old techniques do not work.
âNo one will pay attention to that nowadays,â Mr. Watts said. âYou have to have a video form to really grab an American audience today, which 10 years ago was just not even technically that possible.â
