Alea is a 56 meter sloop design by Mani Frers. Her interior was penned by ‘M2Atelier’ design office in Milan. Alea has a large ensuite owner’s cabin forward. The guest cabins are located to starboard aft while the crew occupies the port side aft. The huge lazarette, that houses a 7 meter tender, can easily be converted into a proper beach club.
Her rig is sized to panamax so Alea clears the Bridge of the America’s over the Panama Canal.

Vitters Shipyard shows off its 56m Frers Design Alea
ZWARTSLUIS – Halcyon days for Vitters Shipyard! The Dutch builder of performance sailing yachts has unveiled Alea, a 56m (184ft) craft that took two years to build and boasts a mainsail that dwarfs the size of an NBA basketball court.
The massive aluminum-hulled yacht was carefully freed from a giant build hall and placed onto a pontoon for transport to the North Sea port of Harlingen. There, the 64m (209ft) carbon mast made by Southern Spars of New Zealand will be installed, followed by sea trials. The Frers Design sailing yacht has an interior by M2Atelier.
Project 3083 ticks all boxes of Vitters’ innovations. They include retractable V-Bollards for complete flush-deck aesthetics. The forepeak holds three V-Drums that make headsail changes easy and a very practical “submarine Anchor system that keeps the bow and foredeck aesthetically clean.”
The yacht’s wide beam creates a large aft deck and beach club. The yacht carries two tenders, one in the bow and an 8.5m tender (28ft) in the stern garage.
With Alea out of the way, Vitters will continue finishing a 59m (194ft) aluminum hull that must first be turned. That classically lined yacht is scheduled to leave the shipyard in mid-2023. As soon as the hull hall is empty, Vitters says it will start building a modern, 44m (144ft) sailing yacht whose delivery is scheduled for summer 2024.
The specs of that 56m sloop-rigged yacht on that pontoon are impressive: Alea’s lifting keel provides a draft of up to 6.6m (22ft); a ballasted keel weighing 41 tons; fuel tanks that can hold some 5,000 gallons, and a mainsail of 682 sq. m. How big is that? A regulation NBA court is only 420 sq. m.
To date, Vitters Shipyard has built some 40 award-winning high-end, performance sailing yachts. It excels in equipping them with high-tech gear that takes the groaning out of sailing.

Description
Alea was conceived to sail around the world in comfort and ease at high average speeds. Open spaces and privacy were paramount together with a fresh design approach using proven technology.
A reverse bow gives the yacht a distinctive dynamic look. The resulting long waterline length allows to create a powerful slippery hullform which sails at low heel angles with a panamax rig averaging speeds above 15 knots.
We wanted to maintain 360 degrees views in all common living areas including the helm stations and aft cockpit hence the deck structure is recessed enhancing the yacht sleek looks. The metallic colour fits with her clean lines and brings out the shape essence. Every detail was designed and engineered to create a homogenous feeling of simplicity.
A huge beach club completes the deck layout at anchor. When under sail this volume contains an 8m long tender to explore the surroundings and support sport activities.
The General Arrangement show the interior and exterior salon in one level in the centre of the yacht. The natural light, protection and views makes this area a ‘feel good’ space at any time of day or night. Further forward a movie area and interior dining area a few steps below lead to the large owner’s area comprising the whole bow forward of the mast. This area includes office space and a spare cabin for long passages. Behind the salon, separate stairs provide access to the guest area on starboard and crew area on port.
Her quick acceleration under sail combined with ease of movement along the various zones together with the quiet operation and long-range capability transmits a desire for endless sailing!

IN PICTURES: THE TRANSIT AND LAUCH OF VITTERS 56 PROJECT 3083, ALEA
Vitters ’ 56-metre Project 3083 , now called Alea , was pulled out of the shed two days ago ahead of her launch today, and our in-house photographer Ruben Griffioen has been hot on her heels. Ruben documented Alea ’s transit across the Netherlands from Zwartsluis to Halingen, capturing her navigating the Dutch waterways. This morning he returned to Halingen to photograph the moment she made her first splash.
Alea has an estimated 320 GT and her interior design was curated by M2Atelier . Her exterior lines, however, came from the drawing boards of Mani Frers , who penned her with long, flowing lines to give her a clean, modern aesthetic.
Space has been a design imperative for this sailing yacht; she has five generous staterooms, a large aft deck, and a beach club, as well as two large tender garages. Alea offers her owner additional privacy as the main suite is located away from the guest staterooms, in the bow, while the guests will reside aft.
To get Alea into the water the team employed two Mammoet cranes. Notably, she’s the second-largest yacht to be launched by Vitters . The largest from the Vitters fleet is the 66-meter Anatta , which was launched in 2011. Alea won’t hold second place for long though, as the shipyard is busy working on a 59-meter sailing yacht, Project 3090 , which will be launched next year.

Vitters’ launches 56m, Alea
after two years project 3083, alea has officially left the shipyard in netherlands….
Alea has been in-build for just over two years at the Vitters Shipyard , the 56m yacht is designed by Mani Frers while the interior is designed by M2Atelier.
The accommodation is split between the owner’s en-suite stateroom in the bow and four generous guest cabins in the aft ship. The wide beam of the yacht allows for a large aft deck and beach club. Two tenders will be carried on board, one under the tender hatch at the bow and one 8.5m in the stern garage.
Vitters wanted to and became successful in separating Alea from its competitors with the retractable V-Bollards which complete the flush deck aesthetics. The three V-Drums down below in the forepeak make headsail changes easy and finally the submarine anchor system keeps the bow and foredeck aesthetically cleans as well as proving to be practical.
Alea is the first project that has been successfully delivered since 2021, on average the shipyard has delivered on yacht per year, however as stating on the above graph they failed to deliver any superyacht projects in 2018, 2019 and 2021. Vitters have scheduled projects for the next two years.
The yacht is set to be launched on Friday 20th May 2022 and will then be handed to the owner just before summer.

Vitters 56m Sailing Yacht ‘ALEA’ Emerges After Two-Year Build
Following a two-year build, the 56m Vitters sailing yacht, Alea (formerly Project 3083), has emerged from the Dutch shipyard.
Mani Frers developed the sloop-rigged sailing yacht, which is made of aluminium and has an inverted bow and flush deck. With a lifting keel, the draught drops from 6.6 metres to under 3.5 metres for exploring shallow ports and harbours. At the helm, two carbon rudders allow for fingertip steering.
With gear supplied by Southern Spars New Zealand, a single carbon mast will stand 55.32 metres tall once completed. A 682 square metre mainsail and a 484 square metre blade headsail will be among her sails.
The yacht, which features a modern design by M2 Atelier, includes all expected luxuries internally. These include an owner’s suite located in the bow and four spacious guest cabins aft.
Other notable features include retractable V-Bollards on deck and three V-Drums below deck. Additionally, there is a subsurface Anchor system that keeps the bow and foredeck free of anchor operations.
The 56m Alea yacht has the capacity for a beach club and can carry two tenders, one beneath a hatch on the foredeck and one 8.5 metre tender in the lazarette. The yacht will be launched this week on Friday and will be delivered to her owner in time for the summer.

Alea wins two Neptunes at the World Superyacht Awards 2023
The by Vitters shipyard built sailing yacht Alea has been rewarded with two Neptunes during the World Superyacht Award ceremony in Istanbul, Turkey on 20 May.
One Neptune was for winning the category ‘best sailing yacht above 40m and the second one for ‘best sailing Yacht of the year’. Mani Frers was responsible for the naval architecture and exterior styling and the modern interior was penned by M2 Atelier. The judges were impressed with Alea’s attractive profile, uncluttered decks and sizeable beach club. Alea’s Exterior features a flush fore deck and a deckhouse that gives a fantastic 360 degrees panoramic view. The covered main cockpit with up/down side windows create comfort and shelter in all weather conditions. The wide and spacious aft deck offers plenty of space to enjoy the sailing and offers a comfortable lounging area.
In the back corner there is a stair located to the open transom hatch which offers an extended beach club. The modern hull, designed by Mani Frers, with the for Alea characteristic inverted bow and the widest beam at the back end of the yacht, offers plenty of space. The large owners en-suite stateroom including an office is in the bow. Three of the in total four guest cabins are positioned in the stern of the yacht on starboard. Due to her wide beam the entire crew area including cabins, laundry and professional equipped galley is fitted on the aft port side of the yacht. Alea carries two tenders, one crew tender stored under the tender hatch at the bow and one 7m custom made guest tender in the lazarette. The interior by the hand of M2Atelier, in close cooperation with the Owners, is in a contemporary modern style with great attention to detail. It has been an amazing achievement to finish the meticulously designed interior to the level of quality presented in this stylish and well-balanced yacht.
Alea embodies modern, performance characteristics while offering the enjoyment of comfortable living on-board. No compromise has been made on performance, safety and comfort. Therefore this yacht carries a complete set of Vitters techniques of which the efficiency and compactness is extraordinary for a yacht this size. Two main engines and two generators are installed for the propulsion and the main energy supply on board. Alea ticks quite a number of boxes on the Vitters’ innovations list. To mention a few; the retractable V-Bollards completed the uncluttered deck aesthetics, down below in the forepeak three V-Drums make headsail changes easy and, last but not least, the submarine Anchor system keeps the bow and foredeck aesthetically clean as well as proving practical.
The lightweight aluminium hull was engineered to the smallest detail and the extensive use of finite element analysis enabled the yard to develop and build a stiff and light aluminium construction, all in line with the naval architect’s concept.

A U.S. Gunship Sank a Fishing Vessel in the Pacific. The Target Was No Ordinary Boat.
The destruction reflects a stand against coercive tactics.
- A U.S. Air Force gunship sank a simulated fishing boat during Exercise Balikatan 2024.
- The exercise took place in the Philippines, where China is using paramilitary fishing boats to force its territorial claims.
- The destruction was part of a SINKEX that saw the AC-130 train its guns on the target ship.
A U.S. Air Force gunship shredded a fishing boat as part of joint exercises between the United States and the Philippines. While sinking a simulated civilian vessel seems in poor taste, China is using ships just like it—which have been known to carry weapons—to bully other countries. The exercise was a clear sign to the Chinese government that aggression, even by innocent-looking fishing boats, would be repelled in all forms.
“Shoulder to Shoulder”
The exercises, known as Balikatan (“Shoulder to Shoulder” in the Filipino national language, Tagalog) have run from April 22 until today, May 8, and take place in the Philippines. The exercise, known as Balikatan 2024, is meant to reinforce defense cooperation between the two countries, but also includes participating contingents from the Australian Defence Forces and the French Navy.
Ghostrider SINKEX
Among the many events in the annual exercise was the participation of an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship from the 27th Special Operations Wing, based at Hurlburt Field, Florida. The AC-130J, based on the C-130J Super Hercules, is the latest in a long line of transport aircraft converted into gunships that goes as far back as the Vietnam War.
The Air Force operates 37 of them at this time, each armed with a 30-milimeter side-firing chain gun and a direct-fire, 105mm howitzer. The gunship can also attack enemy forces with the Griffin air-to-ground missile, launched from tubes in the side of the aircraft.
The result is a versatile platform that can attack targets in direct-fire mode, loitering over the battlefield and raining shells down on enemy positions, typically in support of conventional or special operations forces. The platform’s vulnerability to guns and missiles, however, restricts it to operating in “permissive” airspace, or airspace without advanced enemy air defenses. Even against lightly armed adversaries, it typically operates at 10,000 feet or higher, staying out of range of short-range, shoulder-fired, surface-to-air missiles.
Unlike previous generations of gunships, the Ghostriders can still engage enemy forces from a distance. New to the Air Force’s gunships are wing-mounted pylons capable of carrying air-to-ground munitions, including Hellfire missiles and GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs). SDBs, launched from high altitude and then gliding toward their target with the help of GPS and small, pop-out wings, can strike targets up to 40 miles away.
Maritime Militia
In this month’s exercise, an unused fishing boat was procured by the Armed Forces of the Philippines and parked off the coast of Lubang Island, on the western edge of the Philippine archipelago. In what is called a SINKEX, or “Sinking Exercise,” an AC-130J circled above it, firing down into the ship and quickly sinking it.
Most of the hits appeared to come from the gunship’s GAU-23/A 30mm chain gun, although one towering explosion and shower of water, at the 10-second mark, appeared to come from a 105mm howitzer. The hull of the ship quickly disappears beneath the waves, leaving only the twin masts above the surface.
The destruction of a fishing boat, ostensibly a strictly civilian vessel, was not an exercise in bad judgment, but a pointed demonstration to the Chinese government.
In the 2010s, China began asserting its claim to the so-called “Nine Dash Line,” a line consisting of nine dashes that demarcated its territorial claims in the South China Sea. That wasn’t all that unusual, but the scope of the claims, including virtually 90 percent of the sea, was more atypical. The territorial claim also ignored competing claims from China’s neighbors, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Brunei.
China’s claim in the South China Sea is so expansive it reaches more than 500 miles from the Chinese mainland to within 50 miles of the Philippines. The Philippines disputes this, and ships of the two countries have repeatedly faced off in the sea. Chinese Coast Guard ships have aggressively used water cannons and ramming tactics against otherwise peaceful Filipino ships, breaking windows and injuring crew members .
One tool used by China in the disputes is the so-called “maritime militia,” or China’s extremely large commercial fishing fleet. Under China’s militia system, fishing boats in private hands can be called upon to undertake paramilitary missions, including surveillance and intelligence gathering missions. They are also used to outnumber and intimidate ships from opposing countries, and have been used against ships of the Philippines.
According to the Center for Naval Analyses , the ships also receive training in direct action missions, including “anti-air missile defense, light weapons use, and sabotage operations.” All of this makes them a deniable asset for the Chinese government, one that can carry out violence, intimidation, and other unneighborly acts at sea without being an official part of government.
The use of a fishing boat as a target was not ill-conceived, or the result of getting the cheapest floating piece of scrap possible to act as a target. It was deliberate, and sends a message to China that the fishing boats of the Maritime Militia won’t be spared if they are used for violent action simply because they’re civilian hulls. If they carry weapons into combat and act as naval auxiliaries, they’re fair game.
As a large, slow-moving, converted transport aircraft, the AC-130J’s usefulness in a major conflict has been called into question. The gunship may not have a chance against a Chinese carrier battle group, or an island-based, surface-to-air missile system. But if any aircraft has the patience to loiter for hours over a fleet of fishing boats, and then pick the armed ships and engage them with precision fire, it’s the Ghostrider.
The Maritime Militia may have met its match.

First interior renderings of largest Dutch-built motor yacht revealed
The first interior renderings of Amels ' 120-metre project, now known as Project Tanzanite, have been revealed.
The full-custom superyacht was last seen in June 2023 when she arrived at the Damen Yachting facility in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, for outfitting.
The yacht is currently the largest project in build in the Netherlands, and, once delivered in 2025, will become the largest Dutch-built motor yacht in the world.
The record-breaking yacht is also set to become the largest member of the Amels fleet, surpassing the current 89-metre flagship Here Comes The Sun by 31 metres.
The yacht features exterior design by Espen Øino , who has worked with the yard on a number of projects in the last two years. Their shared portfolio includes the Amels 60 , the Amels 80 and the 77.8-metre custom project Energy .
Her interiors have been conceived by Nice-based studio Zuretti Design . Renderings reveal a warm, contemporary aesthetic that incorporates a cream and brown palette, curved furniture and statement walls in wood and marble.
Damen Yachting has completed the naval architecture in-house and the client will be represented throughout the build and final construction phase by Deeside Maritime.
The yacht arrived in the Netherlands from Damen Yachting's hull-building site in Galati, Romania. She was launched at the shipyard in May 2023, in a ceremony attended by local schoolchildren from the area.
Amels project manager Jeroen Waalewijn said at the time: "The launch of the hull was an emotional yet incredible moment for all of those who have played such an integral part in the realisation of the Amels 120 Full Custom so far. To see her out on the water and to now have her here in Vlissingen is a testament to the entire project team."
Project Tanzanite is set to incorporate the latest in design and technology, including diesel-electric engines and Azipod electric propulsion, which will help her "operate with the lowest levels of noise and vibration ever recorded on a yacht of this size", according to the yard.
She joins 12 other projects in build at Amels, including the 74-metre Nome , which was recently sighted on sea trials.
