Wooden decks, customised berths and silk fabric cushions is what you can expect from enterprising couple Dato' Sri Rozita Ramelan and Datuk Omar Mustapha's first forays into the Malaysian luxury yacht market.

The birth of AB Yachts Malaysia Sdn Bhd began with the couple’s quest for finding a ‘perfect house on the water.’ Both Rozita and Omar are avid divers and enjoy the pleasure of being out in the open sea. However their diving excursions were occasionally marred by the less than satisfactory living conditions on certain live-on-board boats.

Not ready to settle for anything other than the best, the couple made a trip to Italy and landed on the doorstep of Azimut Yachts. The exquisite Italian workmanship showcased in every aspect of the yacht made the couple realise that the builders took a special pride in crafting each vessel and that’s where their love affair with Azimut Yachts first began.

The Azimut Grande 95 RPH is an epitome of class and a granduer work of art, as the name goes. 

 However they soon came to the realisation that there was no dealer for Azimut yachts in Malaysia to look after the sales service aspect of the yachting business. Converting this glitch into a business opportunity the ever- enterprising couple embarked upon the journey to introducing a new line of luxury yachts to other potential buyers in the Malaysian peninsula.

Established in 1969 by veteran Paoloa Vitelli, Azimut yachts currently holds a standing of being one of the world’s leading manufacturers for luxury ships and yachts. The company which started with chartering sailing boats, soon became a global luxe yacht giant. Currently Azimut has five series of yachts between 34 and 120 feet including a range of sporty and high performance cruisers .

 Malaysia, with its enchanting coastline is no stranger to the luxury yacht market. With the introduction of AB Yachts the couple hope to give sailing enthusiasts a new level of customisation in creating the vessel of their choice. Introducing Azimut Yachts Malaysia

AB Yachts (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd officially announced its presence as the exclusive Malaysian dealer for Azimut Yachts.

Francesco Montanella, Asia Pacific Sales Manager for Azimut Yachts Italy shared during his presentation that Malaysia is a key market with plenty of opportunity for Azimut Yachts, adding that the Group is dedicated towards ensuring the success of AB Yachts and will provide the necessary support from customization all the way to after sales servicing. He also highlighted the Group’s success thus far in maintaining its position for 17 years as the global leader in manufacturing yachts over 24 meters in size.

Datuk Omar Mustapha as Chairman and owner of AB Yachts (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd states that the love for the ocean is what started the Azimut journey and that he looks forward to sharing with potential clients the joys of yachting and the beauty of Italian craftsmanship. Along with the many developments recently incorporating marinas along the beautiful coastline of Malaysia, he is confident the timing is right for the introduction of Azimut Yachts Malaysia.

He went on to say that through their extended network in Sabah and Sarawak, AB Yachts will also serve its Brunei-based customers.

Members of the media had the opportunity to explore the full-fledged showroom that closely followed specifications from Azimut Benetti Italy, complete with timber flooring and lovely wooden beams. The showroom also displays the various options available for the yachts, from countertops to cushion covers and even scale model yachts.

AB Yachts has access to market the entire range of Azimut Yachts ranging from EUR500,000 for the sporty Atlantis 43 to the luxurious Grande 35 Metri at EUR15,000,000.

A SYNERGY OF MAN AND MACHINE

At Grand Banks, we eschew third-party componentry wherever possible as we prefer to do most of our manufacturing in-house.

To achieve such total control over our product has required us to develop one of the largest production facilities in our region.

We’re based in Malaysia where over 650 full time staff are working in 51,000 square meters of covered shop floor. (We have another 12,000 square meters ready for expansion.)

This working environment has been carefully designed to allow cutting edge technology to operate hand-in-hand with traditional craftsmanship in partnership with a 24-man design team.

This close working relationship is essential given the ongoing role that innovation plays in the development of our yachts.

INDUSTRIAL ERGONOMICS

The efficiency of our workflow has proven to be a major factor in the success of our operation. Over the last five years, the factory has been modernized and its facilities re-arranged to ensure the most ergonomic passage of each Grand Banks through every stage of construction and testing. The boats snake through the factory as they visit one specialist area after another.

The beauty of this organizational model is that everything is in the right place at the right time and quality control inspections are being conducted throughout the entire process of the build.

Similarly, the benefit of making everything in-house is that we control both standards and availability. For example, we actually create the material that our CNC machines then cut to fabricate the interior panels of our boats as and when it is required. It’s a seamless process.

TIME SAVING TECHNOLOGY

As part of our modernization program, robotics is playing an increasingly significant roll. But not perhaps in the way you might imagine. The German-made robots at our factory operate at higher degrees of accuracy than you’d find in most automotive plants.

But we don’t employ them directly in the manufacture of our boats. We use them in new product development.

Their precise sculpting of complex shapes combined with their 24-hour working day makes them extremely effective in creating new moulds and plugs and dramatically shortens the time from concept to construction.

Testing is the key to perfection. That’s why we do it so many times.

TESTING 1, 2, 3. (AND 4 IF NECESSARY!)

The vast roof of our facility allows us to conduct all testing under cover. Every boat goes through multiple stages of this process.

Once the deck and superstructure have been fused to the hull with the engines and electrics installed, the boat is gently lowered into the pool and all systems given an extensive trial run.

The boat is then removed for completion of the fit and finish before being returned to the pool for exhaustive testing in preparation for being commissioned and transferred to open water.

Most visitors are initially surprised by the scale of the operation. But, as is often the case, it’s the small details that make a lasting impression. It’s rare that we don’t get a compliment on how well we keep the floors clean.

And we like that. It’s an acknowledgement of just how proud we are of our workplace.

1983 Maxi 100 PS

Here is an absolute charm of a yacht. The Maxi 100 PS is a Swedish yacht of note, a very popular yacht in her day and this one comes to the market loaded with much new kit. A full refit this last two years gave a new contemporary open plan interior, all new upholstery, a brand new BETAMARINE engine c/w new shaft, VOLVO stuffing box and VOLVO folding two blade prop was installed by previous owners but hours are still very low. The yacht has new RAYMARINE autopilot, new RAYMARINE sailing instruments. Brand new solar panels with brand new solar controller and a 250 amp lithium battery c/w 1500 watt inverter have made the yacht very self sufficient.

The yacht was launched this year with her newly painted topsides and is truly ready to go. A great yacht for really economical cruising in this region and perfectly set up for off grid living.

The new open plan layout makes for a large saloon and adjoining fore cabin. The bathroom is surprisingly large and the biggest surprise is the large aft cabin. All upholstery was new this year and all lighting has been replaced with LED. Four 12 volt fans. All windows were replaced in 2018.
