The opportunity to deliver a 100 foot yacht from Chicago to Antigua, with a family friend who is also a yacht Captain. This trip encompassed the Great Lakes, Welland and Erie Canals, Hudson River and Atlantic Ocean. The ever changing scenery and diverse work load, was an immediate attraction. After a few years as Deckhand/Mate, it was clear this would become a career. Stephen has cruised extensively all along the East Coast of the United States, from Halifax Canada to the Florida Keys, including 3 visits to Bermuda. A good portion of Stephen’s experience is doing charter work in the Caribbean, BVI, USVI and the Bahamas. An opportunity to build a 142’ Christensen over 2 years, has afforded Stephen cruising experience from Washington State thru California and beyond into the Baja Peninsula of Mexico. JOB DESCRIPTION: Stephen oversees all aspects of the yacht operation. Your experience while on board will be a safe and enjoyable one. Stephen has assembled a strong, experienced crew who are committed to delivering a high standard of service, and an unforgettable stay on board Temptation. Alicia "Galley Ali," was born and raised in Vancouer, Canada. Ali has had an eye for art and food from a young age. When Alicia was thirteen years old, she landed her first kitchen job as a line cook/saucier, where she stayed for 6 years throughout high school. Alicia completed her culinary apprenticeship before she reached 20, thereafter landing her first head chef job at a restaurant in the city. Alicia has been "cheffing" on yachts in Florida, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Bahamas, New England, and Middleast for the past 8 years, on yachts ranging in size from '85 to '240. Alica has an intense passion for animals and expects to have multiple parrots and dogs one day

Paul Schiller

Having owned a small sailboat for some years on Florida’s Central-East Coast and Intercostal waterway, Paul always had the desire to be on the water but didn’t always have the time. In late 2019 he left an executive job in the wide-format digital print industry to pursue new ventures. This was immediately followed by a global pandemic, which afforded him the time and opportunity to discover a new career path. He quickly acquired a captains license and began running deliveries. Paul’s first delivery job was bringing a 100’ Broward yacht down from East Hampton to Southern Florida. It was a great way to see the eastern seaboard and most of the Intercoastal from north to south. He continues to gain knowledge and experience as well as many great friendships in the yachting industry.

Emery Wallerich

- Originally from Seattle, WA, Emery went off to college to play soccer at Oregon State University while getting her major in Digital Communications. A week after she graduated, she caught wind of the elusive yachting industry and immediately got her courses. On her first yacht job she traveled into the West Coast of Canada. Seeing pods of orcas, humpback whales, and the beautiful scenery Canada has to offer, Emery was hooked. Her passion for the ocean, travel, and meeting new people fueled the love she has for her job.

Her interior decor is elegantly appointed and beautifully finished. The main salon and formal dining is set in a contemporary open plan, offering the lounge aft and formal dining forward. The salon has sumptuous soft furnishings, exquisite Brazilian wood flooring and timeless cherry wood panels. Elongated side windows provide fabulous natural light and spectacular views. Accommodation is in a full beam master stateroom on the main deck forward, complete with a continuation of the Brazilian woods floors, while below decks is the full beam VIP cabin and 2 double cabins, each with plush cream carpeting and private en-suite facilities.

TEMPTATION Specifications

Exterior living is spacious. The aft deck is adjacent to the salon featuring and alfresco dining table, ample seating, complete wet bar and shade, making it the ideal spot for casual or formal entertaining. Further aft steps lead to a large swim platform, where a good selection of water toys are available. An upper sundeck boasts an additional alfresco dining table and wet bar, sunpads, seating and deluxe Jacuzzi. Partial shade ensures everyone is comfortable.

TEMPTATION is powered by 2 x Detroit Diesel 1800hp engines. She has cruising speeds of 13 knots and top speeds of 17 knots. The yacht is fitted with underway stabilizers.

Accommodation is generous in 4 double cabins, all providing marble finished en-suite facilities. The master stateroom is on the main deck forward of the salon, with a full beam layout, king size bed, sofa, desk, TV entertainment and his and hers bathrooms and Jacuzzi tub. On the lower deck is the full beam VIP cabin, forward, offering a queen size bed, seating, desk and TV entertainment. Two guest cabins each have walk around queen size beds.

Hello Martha: We had a great time! The yacht was superb and the crew could not have been better. When comparing the two yachts, Cocktails and Temptation, both were fabulous. However, if Temptation had a solid shade cover on the top deck, it would have gotten more activity on it. Please don't take it as a complaint. The crew over-extended themselves and tried to accommodate us with more shade by bringing up umbrellas. I'm simply stating this in the event we are fortunate enough to do this again in the future. Overall, everything was beyond what we expected. The chef was fabulous! Each meal was a work of art and everyone indulged in his offerings....even as we were concerned about gaining weight! Captain Brandon was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating. José, Michelle, and Elaine were all excellent as well. Thank you for putting together this marvelous trip. We could not have had a better experience!

Anticipation and Temptation

As the winter grinds on, my thoughts are turning toward a summer of racing. The anticipation of being on the water is good therapy on cold days. I look forward to joining Art Santry for his campaign on a Judel/Vrolijk (J/V) designed 66-footer beginning in May. Santry has been racing a Ker 50, “Temptation,” for the past 15 years. Both the Ker 50 and the JV 66-footer are part of the Oakcliff Sailing program inventory of racing boats.

The Oakcliff program is directed by America’s Cup Hall of Fame sailor, Dawn Riley. The Ker 50’s handicap rating worked well under the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s IRC rule, but struggled in the more recently used Offshore Racing Conference (ORC) handicap rating rule. When the formerly named, Numbers, a J/V 66-footer, became available for a long-term charter, Santry studied the opportunity. Late in the summer of 2023 he raced in two events off Newport, Rhode Island and was intrigued by the prospect of campaigning a larger, and faster yacht. An arrangement with Oakcliff Sailing, was signed and Santry and his manager Bill Rudkin went to work with Riley putting together the racing program for 2024.

Organizing a big boat campaign requires considerable effort. A crew needs to be recruited, the boat thoroughly surveyed and prepared for blue water racing, complicated applications for entering regattas must be executed, new sails need to be ordered, and equipment must be serviced or replaced. The list is long. Santry has been campaigning boats at a high level for many years, and he understands the process.

Even still his new yacht requires extra effort. Santry has decided to keep the name Temptation for the 66-footer. He explains, “My father named his 54 yawl Temptation in the 1960s. Since that time there have been four boats in our family with the same name. I wanted to keep the tradition of using Temptation for continuity.”

During the winter months the boat has undergone a series of upgrades including replacing the seals and bearings for the rudder and lifting keel. The hydraulic pins have been replaced along with installing new runner winches. The boat will have a new electronics package to bring it up to state of the art. Santry says, “We’ve cleaned up the electronics down below by getting rid of unused wires and pieces of equipment. The boat has a low freeboard and is wet. We are making sure the hatches are watertight.

“The boat has a good inventory of sails, but we are adding a new number two headsail, and an asymmetric No. 4 spinnaker and will likely get a new mainsail at some point. The carbon standing rigging was replaced two years ago and is in good shape.”

Santry says the boat has double the sail area of the Ker 50 and sails upwind 3.5 knots faster than a 12 Meter. “It’s a lot of boat,” he says. “It will be relatively easy to sail once we figure it out. It is fast upwind. I think we will be competitive.”

The boat is also fast downwind. He adds, “Last summer during the Ida Lewis Distance Race we the boat was approaching a leeward mark at 25 knots in 23 knots of wind. I asked how far we were from the mark? I was told six miles. That meant we had less than 15 minutes to get the headsail up and the spinnaker down. We all worked hard to be ready for the rounding. You cover a lot of distance at those speeds.”

The crew will be made up of a few older sailors (I prefer to call us veterans) and lots of young sailors. Oakcliff Sailing will provide several graduates from their program along with a few newcomers. Art’s daughter, Alexa and son Richie will be on the crew.

My role on the boat will be tactician. Mike Toppa will oversee sail trim and LJ Edgcomb will be the navigator. Steven Murray will share steering duties with the skipper, Art Santry. Most of the crew will be amateur racers, but there will be a few professionals on board.

The boat is scheduled to be launched in early May and a three-day practice weekend will follow. The race schedule will include at least one practice day before each race. The regatta list includes the Block Island Race, the New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta, the Newport to Bermuda Race, New York Yacht Club Race Week, Safe Harbor Regatta, Ida Lewis Race, and the capstone of summer the ORC World Championship that starts at the end of September where Temptation will be competing in the Maxi Class.

Springtime is for getting ready for racing. Boat preparation, getting in good physical condition and carefully planning endless logistics is the key to success. As I sit by the fireplace watching the flames I see sails flicker and visualize Temptation rocketing upwind at 12 knots with the foredeck preparing the spinnaker for a fast ride. A good summer is on the horizon.

By JULIE ASH With just 52 days until the start of the Louis Vuitton challenger series, nine new cup boats are here and a further eight are on the way. Mascalzone Latino have returned to Auckland with their new boat ITA72 and their fellow Italian syndicate Prada are expecting the arrival of their new yacht, ITA74, in the next two weeks. Team Dennis Conner and Le Defi Areva are the only two challengers left to take up their positions on "syndicate row." Both are expected to arrive this month. The British challenge is expecting the arrival of its second yacht, GBR78, known as Wight Magic, today. Originally a one-boat campaign, GBR decided to construct another yacht with the intention of having two 2003-generation yachts to train with after the cup. The boat was to stay in Britain, but at the last minute the syndicate decided it would be of more use to them in Auckland. GBR founder and chairman Peter Harrison was delighted to see GBR78 on her way to Auckland. "Flying out the second boat will give us five or six weeks of final practice and tune-up time, which will be demanding on the team, but will give us the maximum boat selection options between rounds," he said. The second boat was named Wight Magic to go with her sister yacht Wight Lightning (GBR70). "I have named her Wight Magic to continue the theme of linking with our team base on the Isle of Wight, where the Auld Mug was first contested 151 years ago. "Wight also has a spiritual meaning of spirit, courage and enterprise, as well as magical connotations." * * * Former Team New Zealand strategist Murray Jones, now with Alinghi, is out of action for a few weeks after breaking his left foot while sailing on the Hauraki Gulf this week. "The wind was blowing at 10 knots and the two Alinghi boats [SUI64 and SUI75] were involved in routine training when Murray's foot got stuck in the mainsail sheet," Alinghi's physiotherapist Xavier Jolis said. "We will have to wait a few days to assess the injury, but it looks like Murray won't be able to sail for a few weeks." * * * NZL38 has officially retired from Sweden's Victory Challenge. The boat, renamed Cristina, was taken out sailing for the last time on Thursday. It will now be removed from the base to make way for Victory Challenge's new boat SWE73 (Orm). "NZL38 has been the cornerstone of our project until now, without her we would never have got this far," Victory Challenge project manager Mats Johansson said. "We have sailed her continuously since her launch in July 2000. This has been achieved without any kind of damage. She must be the best America's Cup boat ever." With NZL38, Team New Zealand won the Louis Vuitton Cup in 1995. Her sister yacht, NZL32, won the cup match. Victory Challenge are not sure where the future of NZL38 lies. "It looks like we'll sell her. Hopefully, she'll get a home here in Auckland. She's an historic boat after all, especially for New Zealand." * * * With so many new boats in action, the temptation for the challengers now is to pit themselves against each other. So far when syndicates have raced each other it has been with their training boats built for the last cup, except when Victory Challenge used their new boat, SWE63, in the International America's Cup regatta. But last week Victory Challenge lined SWE63 up against Britain's GBR70 in a battle of the new boats. Although the two syndicates agreed not to discuss what went on in the race, it appears a torn asymmetric spinnaker caused the Swedish team a few problems. * * * Oracle BMW Racing's chief executive officer Larry Ellison can keep an eye on his team's progress from America via his computer. Oracle's software captures data ranging from wind-speed and boat-speed, to direction and keel angles. Captured at 180 variables a second, the data is transformed into information about their boats - USA71 and USA76 - and then distributed to Maryland where the yachts were designed, to California where the boats were built, and to Auckland where the team is training. * * * Bill Endean is the new commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, replacing Peter Taylor. Endean's brother and grandfather are both past commodores. The new vice commodore is David Charlesworth, and John Crawford is the new rear commodore. nzherald.co.nz/americascup

This week, at its headquarters in La Spezia, Italy, the Italian superyacht maker Sanlorenzo launched a yacht that its CEO Massimo Perotti is describing as “revolutionary”. The 50m long 50Steel model named Almax is the group’s most climate-friendly ship ever, and is the first superyacht to use a green methanol reformer fuel cell system that produces hydrogen to power the ship’s onboard systems and creates zero carbon-dioxide emissions. Replacing the traditional diesel generator with a hydrogen one, says Perotti, “means the boat’s engines can be entirely turned off when the yacht isn’t sailing”.

Perotti bought the yacht maker in 2005 and has increased its revenue from €40mn in 2004 to €840mn last year. He built this new yacht for himself but is taking orders now for delivery in 2027. “I couldn’t really sell Almax to anybody else [because it’s an industry first].” There are still, he says, marinas where green methanol is hard to find.

Yachts are responsible for 0.2 per cent of emissions within the shipping industry, which overall is responsible for three per cent of global emissions. Yacht makers are, increasingly turning to green solutions that include hybrid engines as the industry has come under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. Industry insiders say that taking onboard electricity consumption out of the emissions picture is a step in the right direction as yacht owners spend an increasing amount of time on board during the year, thanks to post-pandemic flexible working arrangements.

“In our view this move by Sanlorenzo proves it is the trailblazer of the green transition of the yachting industry,” says Chiara Rotelli, an analyst at Mediobanca, a member of the Net Zero Banking Alliance. “We expect other players to follow.”

The yacht also features a “hidden engine room”, patented by Sanlorenzo, that has changed the layout of the ship, freeing up the lower deck area for extra lounging space, cabins and a spa. A fully chartered weekend-long trip on the ship – which spans five staggered decks designed by Bernardo Zuccon – was auctioned for charity for €160,000 during a gala dinner to mark the launch. The boat, which can host up to 10 guests and nine crew members, will make its maiden voyage in July and will be available for more charters. 

“It’s one thing to pollute because you are operating a hospital and saving lives,” says Perotti, “but if you are polluting because you need to go take a dip out at sea with your megayacht, it’s different. My children ask me all the time why we are building these large ships. New generations see things differently, so we have to start doing things differently.”
