Ocean Alexander 120: The inside story of a 37m regal beauty

Imposing, purposeful and tough enough to shrug off rough weather, the 36.9 metre OA 120 is a formidable new queen of Ocean Alexander ’s yacht fleet. The view from the big sundeck fitted with an elevated spa pool in a nest of sunpads, a central bar and comfortable U-shaped sofa is all encompassing. Bring on the wine and cheese and sunsets.

But this OA 120 (hull No 2) is not just a great party boat; she is a fully equipped little ship, built at Ocean Alexander’s facility in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The exterior styling, by Evan K Marshall and very similar to hull No 1 , conveys the message. “The freeboard forward is relatively high,” says Marshall, who began his collaboration with the Taiwanese builder with the design of this first Megayacht series in 2009. “She looks like a purposeful oceangoing vessel built to do a lot of cruising. I feel she has the presence of a much larger yacht.”

The design had to fit with Ocean Alexander’s heritage and its fans; many of them owners used to rough coastal waters and long passages off the west coast of the American continent. “We didn’t want to go too European,” says Marshall. “We wanted to keep the Ocean Alexander DNA.”

But rough water does not mean roughing it. The Ocean Alexander 120’s 255GT of volume translates into handsome spaces with luxurious finishes from a who’s who of fine interior suppliers, from Abbott + Boyd to Zimmer + Rohde. She has all the comforts of a superyacht: for instance, a full-beam master cabin with king size bed and seating area forward on the main deck.

In the forward en suite, a central spa tub and shower separate his and hers sides. Heated granite floors, Aurora marble in the showers, worktops cut from Gold Macaubas stone and taps from THG Paris are among the many fine details.

Above a glass sink, sliding mirrors uncover large windows with built-in portlights that open to let fresh air in, a feature repeated in all the four guest cabins below. These fan around an inviting lobby with a decorative marble floor and a bar concealing a refrigerator. An undetectable panel between the twin beds of the starboard cabin opens to allow the crew in for service. On the other side of the panel are a washer and dryer, a mess with kitchenette and three crew cabins, including the captain’s cabin.

The layout works beautifully for a family but could also cater for a charter programme. The large galley on the main deck is stylishly appointed with granite worktops and fitted with top of the range appliances, including a Liebherr wine refrigerator and Wolf induction hob. The walk-in pantry has room for weeks of dry goods, while the full-size Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer will keep everything else fresh.

The formal dining room is an elegant light-filled space thanks to floor-to-ceiling sliding doors on the portside. Low cabinets in walnut delineate the space around a comfortable main saloon. Back outside of the sliding door is a table and banquette set up on the aft section of the main deck, plus one of several bars. Moving forward along the side deck and up some stairs takes you to an inviting lounge area and table that converts into sunpads overlooking the bow.

This hull, which made its debut at the Yachts Miami Beach show in February, shows some of the snazzy options available and several modifications from hull No 1.

An interesting deal led to the birth of the Ocean Alexander 120. In 2009, Ocean Alexander struck an agreement to build a mini series of three of these Megayachts with American builder Christensen , a true collaboration beyond co-branding, since Christensen built the vessel at its shipyard in Washington state, using its expert craftsmen and local resources but a mould built by Ocean Alexander in Taiwan.

Hull No 1 was a stunning blend of burr wood, marble and slick engineering, built to MCA and ABS classification standards and on speculation. It found a buyer in late 2012, opening the way for construction of hull No 2. When Christensen ran into financial difficulties, the partnership ended. A couple of years passed before Ocean Alexander was able to proceed with the hull and superstructure.

In the interim, Ocean Alexander’s president, John Chueh, noticed how popular the superyacht beach club had become and wanted to have one added to the layout. He also decided to complete the build in Taiwan, where the vast majority of the yard’s boats have been built to date, including the popular Ocean Alexander 85 and the new Ocean Alexander 112 .

Marshall worked with the yard to create a beach club, beautifully finished with Amtico flooring, walnut cabinets and Blue Flower marble worktops. It replaces what was a tender garage on hull No 1, the tender now residing on the bridge deck aft, along with a crane.

Another change they implemented was to move the captain’s cabin, initially adjacent to the pilothouse, to the lower deck, which opened up the upper saloon where guests can enjoy movies, play cards or sip cocktails. The changes were well received, says Steve Gale, a general manager with Ocean Alexander’s dealer Marine Max. “Our brokers tell us they really like this layout.”

Moving forward and the superyacht wheelhouse is a pleasant space with three chairs facing an array of screens and a wraparound vertical windshield. A quick glance at the instrument panels reveals Trac zero-speed stabilisers, ABT bow and stern thrusters, a full Garmin navigation package and monitoring system among the essentials. Also on the dash are controls for a pair of MTU 2000 M96s, an option on the power package. “With these engines, top speed is 21 knots and cruise is 16 to 17 knots,” Gale says.

Even more options are available. A new Ocean Alexander 120 could be built within 18 months of ordering, says Sally Doleski, marketing manager at the yard. “As long as it doesn’t affect the structural integrity of the yacht, the yard can make almost any adjustment the buyer wants.

“We would work with Evan [Marshall] on changes involving layout and materials used to ensure the completed project is the best possible result from the buyer’s desire and meets our requirements for safety and seagoing abilities. We can also build the boat to class depending on the buyer’s requirements.” For example, hull No 2 was built to ABYC standards.

Meanwhile, Marshall and Ocean Alexander have continued to work on the Megayacht series, with two more potential models — a 125 and a 155 with great new styling — vying to inherit the title of queen.

"Long Aweighted" was commissioned new in April 2018 by an extremely experienced Owner and Crew. Her massive volume is comparable to a much larger yacht with the livability and stance of a 50 meter. Designed by Evan K. Marshall, with the idea of constructing a "mini 160" in a 120' hull, she was originally started at Christensen Shipyard and completed at Ocean Alexander. Her ride is stable and dry, capable of cruise speeds in the mid teens, and top around 20 knots.

Ocean Alexander 120 Syndicate Information

We work closely with this market leading fractional syndicator who specialise in superyacht and even some megayacht fractions.

They are a member of the Fractional Association and are renowned for their professionalism and expertise in fractional yacht management.

This operation has truly earned its place very much at the top end of the yacht syndication marketplace.

The new Ocean Alexander 120, though marketed under the Ocean Alexander name, is a collaboration that came from out-of-the-box thinking by two major boatbuilders, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.

So spectacular, in fact, that the OA 120 was named Best Overall Boat of the Year at the 2012 Active Interest Media Marine Group Editors’ Choice Awards literally one day after the yacht made her debut at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show.

Ocean Alexander, whose primary market has been yachts between 60 and 80 feet (though they’ve built a 100-footer), was interested in a yacht in the 115- to 120-foot range. Richard Allender, the director of Ocean Alexander’s U.S. operations, could see the impact of the economic downturn and approached OA owner Johnny Chueh with a proposal—team up with a company already building large yachts rather than starting from scratch on their own.

Allender first needed a designer who had experience in large yachts and who could bring a fresh look to this largest-ever Ocean Alexander, and he settled on Evan K. Marshall, an American designer based in London who had a good feel for both American and European sensibilities.

She offers the ideal combination of European styling and a functional American style floor plan and space galore!

For those looking to make a step up in the 70-foot range, Worth Avenue Yachts has Forever Intrepid , a 2016 Ocean Alexander 72, listed at $2.695 million. 

Boat owners Michael and Jeanne Wilkins could be the inspiration for the next owner of this 2016 Ocean Alexander 72 for sale. The cruising couple, who owned 30- to 40-foot boats, worked their way up to their own Ocean Alexander 72, Yachting previously reported . “They started looking at Ocean Alexander 68s. Their broker suggested they build new instead. “I said, ‘Gosh, we’d never order a new boat. That’s just not going to happen,’” Michael recalls. “This past winter, in Seattle, they took delivery of their Ocean Alexander 72. It was customized with the galley layout Jeanne preferred, the open flybridge steps Michael wanted and a redesigned flybridge layout for dinner parties.”

The motoryacht’s Evan K. Marshall-designed interior has a warm ambiance throughout thanks to rich satin finishes, light neutral tones and natural light from an array of windows. Entering the salon through the sliding glass door, there is an L-shaped sofa to starboard and lounge chair forward. An L-shaped bar forward and to starboard makes serving guests at happy hour seamless.

Past the forward bulkhead and up a few steps is the pilothouse, which has the galley to starboard, L-shaped dinette to port and helm station forward. The lower helm station has a single helm chair. A pantograph door to starboard offers side-deck access, a nice touch for owner-operators or when shorthanded cruising. The galley has a Kenyon electric cooktop and an array of JennAir appliances, including, an electric oven, a dishwasher, a refrigerator and a microwave.

There are two major outdoor entertainment spaces on board Forever Intrepid : A dining area in the cockpit and a two-person sun pad on the foredeck. For those who want to change up the scenery, launch the 14-foot Novurania tender via the 1,500-pound davit on the flybridge and any beach, sandbar or shoreside eatery are within reach. The forward section of the all-weather-capable flybridge has an isinglass enclosure. The two-seat helm station is forward with a wet bar abaft and to port and an L-shaped dinette to starboard.

There are three staterooms belowdecks, including a full-beam master stateroom amidships with private access via salon stairs to port. Amenities include a king berth, a 46-inch flat-screen TV, and an en suite head. Forward, the forepeak VIP has a centerline queen berth and an en suite head. The third guest stateroom has over-under berths, making it a great space when the kids are in tow.

Forever Intrepid has a 24-knot top hop and an 18-knot cruise speed thanks to twin 1,150 hp Caterpillar C18 diesels. The engines currently have 1,369 hours on them.
