Preserving a legacy of local boat building.

Welcome to the website of E.M. Crosby Boatworks, the boatyard of Ned Crosby (established in November of 2001). Belonging to the eighth generation of a family long noted for craftsmanship, integrity and pure Yankee ingenuity, Edward “Ned” M. Crosby, Jr. perpetuates a legacy of local boatbuilding begun in the 1700’s on Cape Cod . Along with his employees at E.M. Crosby Boatworks, Ned continues to offer services to mid-Cape boat owners in the spirit of two family traditions:

Boatbuilding – Ned’s great-great-grandfather, Horace, has been widely celebrated for having designed and built the first of what became known as the iconic Crosby Catboat. His great-great uncle H. Manley designed the legendary Wianno Senior .

Full Yard Services and Custom Boatbuilding – Ned’s grandfather, Chester, along with his father, Eddie, and uncle, Bookie, forged a sterling reputation for the complete care and maintenance of all kinds of vessels with exceptional customer service. This yard also produced custom boats which can be seen in the three bays of Osterville today.

Often confused with Crosby Yacht, located at 72 Crosby Circle in Osterville, EM Crosby Boatworks has two locations… one on Warehouse Road in Hyannis and one, also in Osterville… about a mile down the road from Crosby Yacht, at 190 Bridge Street (on the other side of the Oyster Harbors drawbridge.).

With eight generations of boatbuilding, it is obviously in the blood.  Ned not only continues the family tradition of building exceptional watercraft and keeping boat owners’ beloved possessions well-maintained, he and his boat yard employees also maintain the Crosby family’s old-fashioned values of working hard and providing honest and sincere service.

This website provides both an overview of the services E.M. Crosby Boatworks offers, plus a scrapbook of sorts.  Projects on this site feature vessels built and restored by Ned and his shop workers, most are on a grander scale; however, the shop also provides a brokerage service and performs minor repairs on boats both large and small.

The crosby 38, eight generations, the wianno senior.

The first Crosby 38 was launched in 2010. The cold-molded hull was built by Brion Rieff Boat Builders of Brooklin, Maine and all finish work done by Ned Crosby and his crew at the E.M. Crosby boat shop in West Barnstable.

This 38-foot custom express cruiser reflects her intended use as a day cruiser and weekender for a family who loves spending time on the water. For the custom design of this first boat commissioned, the owner chose to outfit his boat simply. There is a forward v-berth and upper and lower berths opposite the head. The head was fitted with a stall shower, perhaps the one luxury in what is otherwise a very simple yacht. A small galley with Inox drawer refrigerator was added to the bridge deck, with cooking done on a grill on the stern or on the beach.

Brad Crosby, who worked in his family boatyard from age 11 on, was once asked why he built boats. He smiled broadly and replied, “I just love wood.” For eight generations, Crosby family members have been designing, building, restoring, repairing and maintaining wooden boats on Cape Cod. As one of the longest running family businesses in the country, the Crosby builders are known for their talent, work ethic, integrity and exceptional customer service.

This great love for working with wood began in 1744, when Jesse Crosby, at age 11, moved from his family home in Brewster on Cape Cod, 20 miles to a relatively new town, called “Chequaquet,” meaning “pleasant harbor,” or “village by the sea” by the local Wampanoag Indians, to apprentice for his uncle Jesse Lewis. Little is known about Jesse’s abilities as a boatbuilder, but several of his children had such great skill, they inspired a local ditty: “Below the hill there was a mill, For want of water it stood still, And when it turned it made no noise, because ’twas built by the Crosby boys.”

The Wianno Senior Knockabout has been racing on the Nantucket Sound since the summer of 1914. The boat was originally designed as a day sailor and racer for summer residents of the Wianno Yacht Club in Osterville, Massachusetts. Admiration for this boat spread regionally and to this day, it remains the principal, one-design class of the open waters of Nantucket Sound. In 2008, a European fleet was also established in Porto Santo Stefano, Grosseto, Italy.

The last new Wooden Wianno Senior was built in 1976. After a ten-year drought, the Wianno Senior Class Association commissioned naval architects Sparkman & Stephens to develop a design, to be built in fiberglass and finished in wood, to match H. Manley’s original pattern and mold.  This Wianno Senior design proved “true to the original” in both looks and speed. The Association continues to ensure that the integrity of this one-design is maintained, and that racing success is the result of the ability of the skipper and crew.

The Wianno Senior Class Association has approved E.M.Crosby Boatworks as one of the two builders of the Wianno Senior in this country.  Ned follows in the tradition of his ancestor, H.Manley Crosby, in ensuring that your Wianno Senior will sail fast, look beautiful and last long.

I attended last year (2012) boat show never planning on buying a boat. Especially the quality of the Trophy boat, motor, and trailer we purchased from G & S Marine, Inc. I have sailed or powered for nearly sixty years and this has to be the best summer I ever had. From our first trip out of Brant Rock last April when a Right Whale came right up in front of us (the wrong whale to get too close) to my last fishing day Halloween jigging cod off Scituate. In between we saw the "Tall Ships" in Boston Harbor, caught stripers in Hull, visited "P" Town, and caught fluke on the backside of the Elizabeth Islands, visited cuttyhunk, and Gay Head. I retired this year and was able to easily load the boat by myself. The Four Stroke Mercury Verado was powerful, quiet, and efficient. I had a recall from the factory on the motor Chris from your staff ordered the part when it came in I dropped the boat off it was repaired and missed no fishing time. Your "staff" of Bruce and Chris in parts and service is knowledgeable and helpful. They answered any of my questions and showed me the the proper products to use that were not only good but less time consuming to use. Kudos for Meric as well in sales he knew his product, made you comfortable, and did everything that was asked. Most importantly the "first mate" (my wife) loved the boat. Dear Sir or Madam, It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I return the enclosed Customer Satisfaction Survey. I wish to add specific praise to the favorable ratings I have indicated on the survey. The dealer for that ultimately fixed my engine problems is G & S Marine in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. The service personnel at G & S are unparalleled in attention to customer satisfaction. It is without hesitation that I commend them for a job well done. I bought my motor from another dealer, I-Boats.com, an online reseller. The motor was a 'program motor,' a one year old unit resold by I-Boats.com after returning from a lease. I-Boats sold this motor with a 3 year Mercury warranty. I had other Merc outboards and thought, if Mercury will stand behind it, great. When the motor arrived, it was still in the dead of winter so finding out how well it was going to perform was awaited with much anticipation. As spring arrived I fitted the unit to the hull, launched, and noticed some issues with performance I brought the boat and motor to a local Mercury dealer and had them go over all systems. It coast me a new propeller and Mercury paid for the replacement of some ignition parts as well. For that season, the motor ran, but poorly. We made do as it was seemingly ok. The next spring, good & early, it was sent to a dealer near to my house, namely USA Marine in Worcester, MA. Here it sat for weeks and weeks as the service department kept promising me they would get to it and continuously breaking those promises. Eventually, 8 weeks after it was originally promised, it came back to me. Into the water it went and immediately it would not operate correctly. Not a good experience. I had told USA Marine that I suspected a carburetor problem. They rebuilt the carburetor. Well, now I really had a problem. I was told I could bring it back and maybe they could look at it in a mouth or two. Well, I was hoping to use the boat during the summer and not have it spend the entire time in the shop. Since the boat is kept on Buzzards Bay, I call G & S Marine to plead for help. The person who answered the phone, to my surprise, was a neighbor of mine! Well, he helped to schedule my engine in for service as soon as possible. This was one week before Memorial Day. The service manager said he would do everything possible to have me boating on Memorial Day weekend. Well, I was out on my boat on Memorial Day weekend just like they said. They woo worked on the carburetor. However, despite the fine effort on the first try, it did not address he problem. Back in the boat came. It was determined that the entire carburetor must be defective. The replaced the unit and I had the boat back in no time at all. It has been running fine ever since. Really, this is the first time it has been running fine. G & S was the only service organization that took the time to figure out what was wrong. They did everything they said they would, delivered on time, and made a tremendous impression on me. If Mercury is in the habit of giving service awards to dealers, G & S deserves one. Dear Gary, Please accept this letter of accolade for one of your outstanding employees, Meric Goddu. As one of your newest customers, we wanted to tell you about the wonderful experience we had buying our first boat from Meric. We are brand new to the boating world and have looked at boats for over 2 years. We knew we really wanted to buy a boat, but never felt comfortable with the whole process, and worried that learning how to use the boat, trailer it, take care of it, etc. were going to be really difficult. I was most touched when Meric gave us his cell phone number after our sea trial. He knew we were still a little nervous about taking the boat out alone for the first time, and wanted to be sure we had someone to call if we had a question out on the water. The reassurance was priceless. We (reluctantly!) brought our boat in for winter storage a week ago and we're eagerly awaiting the spring so we can pick it up and continue our fun new family hobby. I believe we never would have "taken the plunge" if it had not been for Meric. We look forward to many years of happy boating and a great relationship with G&S Marine, and have enthusiastically recommended G&S, and specifically Meric, to all our friends looking for a boat. Thank you for my recent boat buying experience!! It all began in early April of this year. It was 6 a.m. on a Saturday and I was prepared for a great day of fishing with my son and a friend. We launched my center console and were excited to start our 2006 fishing experience. However, the fish gods had another story line... the engine would not start. What was the problem, old fuel, bad plugs or gummed up filter. What to do!? Early morning 7:00 a.m.....Saturday... is fishing cancelled? I thought, "G & S Marine is right around the corner. I am not sure anyone is there at 7:00 a.m. I have never been there, but maybe someone could help." I pulled in and noticed someone walking across the parking lot. I called out and Ryan came over and introduced himself. He was just starting his day and they were not open yet. However, he turned on the lights and gathered some new spark plugs and filter to try to help us. I put everything in the boat and tried the engine again. It still did not start. The G & S guys were at the ramp launching a boat and walked over to help. They all took a look and fixed the problem, a stuck choke on the spot. I started looking for a new boat during the end of the fishing season. G & S Marine immediately came to mind. Any company who takes care f a person, who is not a "regular" customer, would be a great company. I was right! The experience and professionalism G & S Marine extended to me made my new boat purchase even better. The ability to shop for a boat locally and have so many people who care made a big difference. Grand Soleil Blue first look: new recyclable yacht concept

The Grand Soleil Blue is a fully recyclable 10m fast and cool weekender, which is due to launch this summer and is the first yacht designed for disassembly

It wasn’t until the end of a lengthy press conference in Düsseldorf that Grand Soleil’s management team dropped what was, for me, the bombshell. It has already designed and engineered the Grand Soleil Blue, a fully recyclable 10m fast and cool weekender, which is launching this summer!

Granted, the Cantiere del Pardo yard had plenty of news to share: it celebrated its 50th-anniversary last year with over five successive years of double-digit growth, was bought by Omniverse, and has, over the last couple of years, launched its most impressive large designs to date in the Grand Soleil 65 and Grand Soleil 72 .

However, for those of us with a keen eye on sustainability this stunning new Grand Soleil was big news to have held back. It’s the first recyclable serial production boat built in Italy.

Regular readers may well remember the EcoRacer 25 we tested for European Yacht of the Year a couple of years ago, a testbed platform by young company NL Comp and one designed by Matteo Polli. Polli has drawn the latest range of Grand Soleils, and the Blue sees the designer connecting the big shipyard with his crewmembers at this exciting tech startup.

The Grand Soleil Blue is built out of thermoplastic resin, which, unlike traditional thermoset resins, can be separated from the glass or carbon fibres and reused at its end of life. Even the sails are made from thermoplastic materials. The 33ft 3.3 tonne craft is described as ‘a daysailer with extended range’, an easy-to-use boat with a large stern deck area. It has a 36m2 main and can fly a 100m2 gennaker.

Propulsion is via a 12kW electric engine, with lithium batteries charged by solar integrated into the deck and hydrogeneration. As standard, autonomy is a healthy 30 miles at 5 knots, which can be doubled with a dual battery pack.

Nauta Design has styled an interior that can sleep four and features a small heads and galley, and an open bulkhead connecting the large forward den. All interior materials are also recyclable. The Blue is ‘designed for disassembly’, and Cantiere del Pardo says it wants to apply this technology to all its boats – and for a shipyard which produced 220 boats last year, that’s another big statement.
