yachts used in movies

Jul 18, 2023

Superyachts have long been used as symbols of wealth, status, and luxury in films. Because yachts are not typically built for filming, one must be rented and, in some cases, specifically reproduced. As a result, many private superyachts have been specifically chosen to appear in films, increasing the yacht’s value and fame. Here are some of the most opulent, magnificent, and stunning superyachts featured in movies…

43 Ships, Boats, & Yachts From Pop Culture [UPDATED]

Written By: Rob Bowman

"Wherever we want to go, we go. That's what a ship is, you know. It's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails; that's what a ship needs. But what a ship is … what the Black Pearl really is … is freedom." — Captain Jack Sparrow

There's something so captivating about a majestic, powerful vessel braving the high seas. There's a vast sense of freedom that's both liberating and terrifying. Many stories are told upon the expanse of the ocean, and the boats, ships, and yachts often become legendary characters themselves. Staten Island Yacht Sales has created a visual treasure trove of some of the most iconic fictional ships collected from movies about ships at sea, TV shows about ships, pirate movies, classic sea adventure movies, and more:

Updated 01/20/2022: Due to popular demand, we updated the infographic to include the S.S. Minnow from Gilligan's Island and The Stugots from The Sopranos.

43 Ships, Boats, & Yachts From Pop Culture [UPDATED]

Many of the ships featured in movies are actual seafaring vessels with names. Let’s navigate the origins of some of the most popular fictional ships showcased on this infographic.

What Ship Did They Use for the Black Pearl ?

Is the Black Pearl a real ship? Sadly, no. Many variations of the Black Pearl have been used throughout the films. In the first film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the Black Pearl was actually a steel barge with wooden structures extending from it to resemble a real ship. Another one was built on a soundstage in order to achieve optimal control over the fog machines. The moody, enigmatic captain’s quarters were constructed on stages at KABC-TV in Glendale, California.

For Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, a more seaworthy Black Pearl was built. It was developed around a ship called the Sunset, which once provided service to oil derricks in the Gulf of Mexico. By building the Black Pearl’s impressive exterior around a functioning ship that could actually navigate on the ocean, it gave producers more creative flexibility and streamlined the filming schedule. After construction was completed at the Steiner Shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, it sailed 2,000 nautical miles to arrive for the filming of the first scenes at Capucine Point on Dominica.

For Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strange Tides, the Sunset found a new identity. Since the Black Pearl does not figure physically into the storyline of that film, the Sunset was reconstructed to serve as the base for the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the notorious and brutally beautiful ship that struck dread into the hearts of pirates across the high seas.

Superyachts which are attributed to high lifestyle and money are often used by movie directors as part of their set when displaying a life of opulence. Whether used as the ultimate getaway vehicle, for romantic interludes in a scene, or for lavish, over-the-top parties, whenever featured they bring excitement to a movie.

Most, if not all filmed yachts are privately owned and on the charter market, available for rent through a charter broker. even as an integral part of the movie, the yachts rarely get credited so let’s explore them..

M3 in The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013)

The 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street” predominantly features the yacht M3 (ex: Lady M) . M3 is a luxury 147-foot motor yacht, built for Coco Chanel, that accommodates ten passengers in five staterooms, including an Owner’s suite, 1 VIP suite, two doubles, and a twin. The yacht was named ‘Naomi’ in the film after the second wife of the key character – Jordan Belfort a stockbroker, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.  The plot features a massive party aboard with a famous scene of “raining fun coupons.”  Making it rain fun money!   Later in the film the yacht supposedly sinks between Porto Cervo and Capri in a disastrous storm.  In 1997 a real-life similar yachting disaster happened to Jordan Belfort.

SARASTAR in Murder Mystery (2019)

In a mystery-comedy movie called “Murder Mystery” starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler, the yacht Sarastar was used as the crime scene of a murder and where the investigation takes place.  It was the private yacht of the billionaire. Soon the couple, Aniston and Sandler, become suspects in an Agatha Christie- esque murder mystery. Sarastar is 197 feet in length and was built in 2017 in Italy.  She accommodates twelve guests in six staterooms including an Owner’s suite and five double staterooms. Her foredeck is multi-purpose as it can be used as a Helipad, dance floor or for sunbathing. Below the foredeck is the garage that houses all her sea toys and tenders.

WHITE KNIGHT in The Bourne Identity (2002)

“The Bourne Identity”, the first of three films starring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, hired the White Knight to be seen in the flashback scenes of Bourne – interior shots, before he jumps off the yacht after being shot and floats away. She is an older superyacht, built in 1985, that has been kept in tip top shape and was for charter in Greece until she was pulled off the market and made private.

KISMET in Six Underground (2019)

The yacht Kismet was used in the filming of the movie “Six Underground” in 2019.  The movie produced by Netflix, was filmed in Italy in 2019 and features the yacht Kismet in many scenes.  A group of eighty or so guests were filmed aboard having a large party scene and a few other action scenes with explosions near the yacht filmed.  The plot involves international operatives who are trying to take down a notorious dictator and the yacht is used as the setting in the final scene where Kismet, the stronghold of the dictator, gets blown up. Kismet, owned by Shadd Kan a Pakistani-American billionaire, was built in 2014. She is 312 feet in length, has five decks and can comfortably accommodate 270 guests for a party. One of her interesting features are video walls that reach two decks high.

The 10 Most Memorable Yachts in Movies

Yachts equate to luxury in real life and on the big screen, and they've been featured in a huge list of hit films. Sometimes yachts are used for romantic interludes, other times they're put to work as the ultimate getaway vessel or as the scene of an ostentatious celebration.  No matter what the occasion, the main point of inserting any yacht into any film is to elicit some kind of "ooh" or "ahh" from the audience.  These movies accomplish that and more.

In no particular order, here are 10 of the most memorable yachts that have been featured in movies.

1. Usher, Entourage (2015)

Usher, also known as Mr. Terrible, is the 47 meter superyacht in the 2015 movie Entourage. On screen, it symbolizes the decadent lifestyle of main character Vincent Chase, played by actor Adrian Grenier. This yacht was fitting for the movie, as it really is as lavish as it looks. It sports an elevator, spacious sundeck, Jacuzzi, five luxurious cabins, and has been used for partying off the coast of Florida and in the Caribbean in real life. It accommodates up to 12 guests and was engineered to be a powerful performer.

2. Northern Cross aka Manticore, Goldeneye (1995)

One of Pierce Brosnan's most memorable performances as Bond was in 1995's Goldeneye, in which he saves the world from a global financial terror plot. In the film, the yacht Northern Cross was called Manticore and served as the residence of smooth assassin Xenia and her crew. Northern Cross is actually available for charter in the Baltic Sea, and it costs tens of thousands of dollars to do so. The 43 meter yacht hosts up to 12 passengers and has six fabulous suites. It ranks as one of the favorite yachts in movies among Bond fans.

3. R Rendezvous aka Left Hand, Donnie Brasco (1997)

Few who have seen the crime drama Donnie Brasco will forget the yacht seen in the movie, Left Hand. It was an integral part of the plot, not just a nice showpiece, but its looks alone make it one of the more memorable yachts in movies. Called R Rendezvous off-screen, the 34 meter yacht was produced in 1992 and it still stands today. Those with the cash to charter R Rendezvous get to enjoy its onboard Jacuzzi, big sundeck, and three cabins with plush amenities.

4. Attessa, Overboard (1987)

Attessa was the yacht featured in the 1987 romantic comedy Overboard, starring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. The interesting thing is this yacht actually belongs to a super rich man named Dennis R. Washington. He's an industrialist worth several billion dollars who loaned the 144 foot long Attessa to the crew while the movie was in production. Washington also lent the boat to the producers of the 1993 Demi Moore film Indecent Proposal.

5. Kingdom 3KR aka Flying Saucer, Never Say Never Again (1983)

Kingdom 3KR, the yacht seen in the 1983 Bond film Never Say Never Again, was special for several reasons. Not only was it in Sean Connery's final movie in the franchise, it was the most expensive yacht in the world at one time. Kingdom 3KR also has an interesting history. Donald Trump bought the 86 meter superyacht for a whopping $29 million, revamped it, and dubbed it the "Trump Princess". He later sold it for $40 million to a Saudi billionaire flush with cash in 1991. The yacht now has its own movie theater onboard, a helipad, dance floor, and can host up to 22 passengers in 11 suites.

6. Lady M aka Naomi, The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The Wolf of Wall Street is all about excess and its pitfalls, so you know the film had to include a super swanky yacht. In the movie Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Jordan Belfort, gifts the yacht to his wife, played by Margot Robbie . The boat is named after her, Naomi. The vessel was shown prominently onscreen as the site of raucous parties and all types of debauchery.

In actuality, the 44 meter Lady M was built for luxury cruising and has a host of lavish details. A professional grade gourmet kitchen, marble flooring, a baby grand piano, wet bar, Jacuzzi, and five stylish staterooms all combine to make it super impressive and one of the most expensive yachts in movies.

7. Helios 2 aka Anson Bell, Syriana (2005)

Matt Damon and George Clooney gave award winning performances in the 2005 drama Syriana, and the Anson Bell -- real name Helios 2 -- was at the center of the action. The 51 meter custom yacht has an aluminum superstructure and hull, along with a state of the art stabilization system. Engineered by esteemed brand Palmer Johnson, Helios 2 really is the epitome of luxury in all its forms, just as it was in Syriana. It has five gorgeous cabins and can be enjoyed by up to 12 guests.

8. M3 aka Soufriere, Casino Royale (2006)

Daniel Craig made his first appearance as 007 in 2006's Casino Royale, and he did so while looking suave on the M3. It was called Soufriere in the film, and was custom made for the movie in 2005 by none other than British company Spirit Yachts. When it carried Bond and Vesper Lynd on a romantic trip through Venice, it became the first yacht to travel the Grand Canal in three centuries. The 32 meter sailing yacht can reach a top speed of 43 knots and has four cabins onboard. It also has advanced media systems, a spa pool, and enough water toys to keep anyone entertained for hours.

9. Wallpower 188 aka Renovatio, The Island (2005)

Ewan McGregor starred in the 2005 Michael Bay film The Island, in which he notably sketches the look of a yacht that's imprinted in his psyche. A modern sci-fi flick about a utopia needs an awesome boat, right? That role was filled by Renovatio, which is really called the Wallpower 188 and was built in 2002. This particular yacht oozes class and its angular profile makes it stand out. The 36 meter vessel reaches a top speed of 60 knots, has a Rolls-Royce Kamewa water jet onboard, and dons a color shifting exterior. The Wallpower 188 has won many yacht and design awards, and is renowned around the world for its innovative features and style. It was put on the market after the movie's production for $33 million.

10. White Knight, The Bourne Identity (2002)

The White Knight yacht was shown in 2002 in the first installment of the Bourne franchise, The Bourne Identity. Jason Bourne, played brilliantly by Matt Damon, goes onto the boat to attack one of his targets. Bourne ultimately doesn't carry out the mission, but White Knight looks spectacular nonetheless.

People can actually charter it in the Mediterranean, and it was built in 1985. The yacht underwent renovation in 2010 to make it better than ever. It now has 8 large cabins, an outdoor dining area, and a wealth of amenities and entertainment options.

spirit-f-bond-007-luxury-yacht-2

If you frequent the high seas, then you are certainly familiar with James Bond movies. After all, this iconic franchise has become synonymous with what it means to lead a life of luxury and danger. From speed boats to submarines and everywhere in between, Ian Fleming has given us some of the most memorable watercraft used by Bond himself throughout his adventures for more than 50 years now. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at some of the best James Bond boats and yachts that have been featured in recent 007 films – both large vessels like The World Is Not Enough’ super yacht as well as small ones such as Live And Let Die’s’ hydrofoil! So fasten your seat belts and get ready to explore these larger-than-life vessels from the world’s top spy!

From Russia With Love (1963)

One of the most memorable boat chases occurs in From Russia With Love . A young Sean Connery and Tatiana Romanova were traveling to Venice when the bad guys assaulted them. But Bond made a spectacular escape aboard a Fairey Huntress .

From Russia With Love - James bond yacht

The speedboat is part of the Fairey Marine catalog. Created by English sailing enthusiasts, the company produced boats until the early 1980s. Its first motor cruiser appeared in the 1960s.

This James Bond boat sequence helps publicize the Fairey Huntress and the Fairey Huntsman motorboats. They became widely popular, and won multiple offshore races. They were the craft of choice for Royal Naval Skippers.

Live and Let Die (1973)

The Glastron GT150 featured on Live and Let Die movie poster is crucial for the 007 boat history. Roger Moore drives the speedboat through Louisiana everglades and makes a 120ft leap over the pursuing Sheriff’s cars.

Live and Let Die, James bond - Glastron GT150 yacht

26 boats were used to create this iconic sequence, and 17 were destroyed during the shoot!

The Glastron GT 150 used to establish the world record was sold just after the shooting. It is now the property of the Ian Flemming Foundation, and it was part of James Bond’s vehicle exhibition in London.

For safety reasons, we don’t recommend these kinds of stunts with speedboats while you are on sailing vacations. But you can still experience high-speed sensation and jumps with water toys. Learn how to choose among them here!

The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)

In this Bond movie, the boat is, in reality, a Lotus Esprit. This beautiful white car is one of the best British sports cars of the 1970s. Q turned it in an incredible vehicle. It turns into a submarine to escape an attacking helicopter.

The World Is Not Enough (1999)

In the longest Bond pre-title sequence, Pierce Brosnan is chasing Giulietta da Vinci’s Sunseeker Superhawk 34 .

Driven down the Thames at 60mph, the motor yacht is wiped out by mini-torpedos. The Superhawk 34 used in The World is Not Enough was for sale in January 2012 for $150,000.

After this film, the collaboration between the film producers (EON Productions) and the boat company becomes more notable.

Sunseeker is a major boat builder for the sports and leisure markets in the world. The James Bond franchise helped the British luxury brand to become an international icon.

The yachts named after James’ Bond movies

Although our article is intended to list the yachts that have been featured in a James Bond movie, you might also encounter boats that were named with one of the James Bond movies, without actually being a part of the movie.

John Staluppi is the most emblematic case of a James Bond fan that decided to show his passion through the naming of its yachts. As such, he named all of the 18 yachts that he owned over his life after James Bond movies.

Like James Bond, John Staluppi likes his yachts fast. To be more precise, he likes them unusually fast compared to their respective size.

One of his most famous posessions include yachts called :

  • For Your Eyes Only : a 36m yacht that could go over 30 Knots
  • Octopussy : a 43m yacht that can reach 50 knots
  • Moonraker : a 36m that can sail at 57 knots
  • Casino Royale : a 49m luxurious yacht
  • Skyfall : a 57m superyacht with 3 VIP suites
  • Diamonds Are Forever: a 61m motoryacht available for luxury charters

It seems that John Staluppi, like many of us, made the realisation that sailing a yacht truly makes you feel like you are part of a James Bond movie. Luckily, your yacht doesn’t have to be featured in a Hollywood movie or to bear its name for you to feel that way.

The famous Riva boats in the James Bond movies

Since the middle of last century, luxury Italian boat maker Riva has become a cornerstone in Hollywood blockbusters. From classic runabouts to modern variations with wooden cladding and impressive technical characteristics, their boats have been featured alongside stars like Clark Gable and Chris Hemsworth – all encapsulating style, wealth and status on screen.

Riva boats have been making a splash in the Bond films since Robert Moore first took up the mantle of 007. In 1995, Pierce Brosnan starred as James Bond for “Golden Eye” and with him came Riva ! Daniel Craig later paraded around on one too when he stepped into his version of Agent 007’s shoes in “Casino Royale”. Over time these beautiful vintage yachts continue to gain more admiration from film-lovers everywhere; even now with many new movies about our beloved secret agent coming out each year – so does their presence remain over all that time.

The yacht featured in Skyfall is Regina, a 183ft superyacht built in Turkey by Pruva Yachting.

The yacht featured in the new James Bond “No Time to Die” is the Spirit 46, a sailing yacht developped by Spirit Yachts.

John Staluppi owns or used to own many of the yachts that were named after James Bond movies such as: Skyfall, Diamonds Are Forever, For Your Eyes Only or Octopussy.

Roy E Carroll is the owner of the Yacht Skyfall, which was originally built for John Staluppi.

The original owner of the yacht Octopussy was John Staluppi. They yacht was sold in 2021 in an in-house deal by Moran Yacht & Ship.

John Staluppi is the owner of the yacht “Diamonds Are Forever”.

John Staluppi is the original owner of the yacht “Casino Royale”, named after a James Bond movie like all of his yachts.

The Ultimate List of the 17 Best Sailing Movies

Nothing can inspire dreamers quicker than an evening of streaming old sailor movies. Sailing adventure movies can be terrifying survival stories or inspirational documentaries about sailors pushing their limits. Unfortunately, Hollywood blockbusters are rarely sailing-related, but there are a few examples out there that will get the seawater in your veins pumping.

Table of Contents

Waterworld (1995), white squall (1996), wind (1992) – the story of the world’s biggest sailing prize, captain ron (1992), pirates of the caribbean (2003-2017), black sails (2014-2017) – a series with great sailing scenes, master and commander – far side of the world (2003), kon tiki (2012), the bounty (1984), all is lost (2013), adrift (2018), the mercy (2018), maiden (2018), chasing bubbles (2016), sea gypsies: the far side of the world (2017), red dot on the ocean (2014), maidentrip (2013), which are your favorite top sailing movies.

Feature Films and Big Productions – Best Sailing Films of All Time

In no particular order, here are my top picks for the best sailboat movies. Good sailing movies can be divided into two categories. Most are about survival at sea, less a sailing movie and more of a drama set on a sailboat. Others are feature films, sailor movies complete with sailing action and exploration. Let’s start with those.

sailing movies

It’s the year 2500, and the ice caps have melted, and sea level rise has claimed the world. The Mariner (Kevin Costner) lives as a wandering nomad on the oceans in his custom-built trimaran. Chased by thugs on jet skis, he leads a search for a mystical place called the “Dryland.”

Ok, it’s ridiculous, and it was a complete flop at the box office when it was released. But Costner’s trimaran is pretty cool. And what cruising sailor doesn’t envy him, with his sad little tomato plant and total freedom?

Based on a true story, White Squall is the story of the brigantine Albatross and her crew of college-aged men. Directed by Ridley Scott and staring Jeff Bridges as the salty Skipper, the movie is captivating and authentic.

The Albatross was a teaching vessel, and Skipper was there to teach the men discipline and how to survive as a team. Drama unfolds as the crew gets to know one another, and even more drama ensues when the brigantine encounters a freakish white squall offshore.

Even cruising sailors will love this inspirational story of an underdog attempt to take back the America’s Cup. For the uninitiated, the America’s Cup is the most prestigious trophy in sailing and the oldest trophy in competitive sports.

The movie features incidents taken from real competitions and fictionalized into the plot. Peter Gilmour, who sailed in the 1987 America’s Cup, was the “Sailing Master” for the film. Many of the yachts used in filming were actual boats from America’s Cup races. Best brush up on those points of sail and sailing terms before watching–this movie is as authentic as it gets!

Overall, the movie has the over-the-top romanticism of movies of the era, like Top Gun but set on the water. But just like Top Gun , this movie is as entertaining today as it was back then.

Absolutely no list of sailing movies is complete without including Captain Ron . And love it or hate it, it deserves to be in top place. Sure, it’s goofy, silly, and a bit dated. But this story of a straight-laced midwestern family throwing in the towel to live on a sailboat in the Caribbean resonates with dreamers and sailors like no other film does.

What makes the movie so special is Kurt Douglas’s portrayal of the singular Captain Ron Rico. Who else could’ve given us these quotes, which will live on, quoted repeatedly on sailboats everywhere?

“If anything is going to happen, it’s going to happen out there!” “A diesel loves her oil like a sailor loves his rum.” “If we get lost, we’ll just pull in somewhere and ask directions!” “Yeah, incentives are important. I learned that in rehab.” Captain Ron Rico

And then there’s the boat. The Formosa 51 ketch Wanderer was the perfect boat for this movie. Its dilapidated condition and lack of seaworthiness are sure to make every boat owner laugh out loud. But, like any good boat, with a little elbow grease, she got them through it.

There are tons of rumors and fables surrounding this film in sailing circles. But consider this. It accurately details two real types of characters. The Harvey family, led by the indomitable Martin Short, is like many starry-eyed Americans who fled to the Caribbean for a life afloat. And Captain Ron? He’s based on a real person . The real one even had a peg leg, but the movie producers thought that would be too over the top!

For a movie series based on a hokey 1960’s Disney Land ride, the Pirates of the Caribbean films have made a name for themselves. It’s the 15th highest-grossing film series of all time, and two movies have grossed more than $1 billion. There have been five films to date, but rumors are a sixth may be in the works.

So, Pirates is a fun series of movies, but how’s the sailing connection? Well, the Black Pearl is a sailing ship, sort of. It’s more of a ghost ship. And it’s all set at sea or on pirate-plagued islands in the Caribbean, so that’s neat. Overall, I wouldn’t rate these films as sailing ship movies, but they certainly are fun to watch.

It’s not a movie per se, but who doesn’t like a binge-worthy series? Combine Game of Thrones with a realistic pirate story, and you get the idea. It’s dirty, gritty, and historically accurate. Black Sails aired on Starz Network for four seasons and can be streamed on Hulu, Amazon Prime, and others.

The series is a prequel to Treasure Island and provides a backstory for pirates Long John Silver and Captain Flint. Unfortunately, Robert Louis Stevenson didn’t go into much detail about the notorious Flint, so the show used some artistic license to combine these fictional characters with the real pirates of the Caribbean.

More specifically, the stories are set in Nassau during its period as the “Pirate Republic” before England sent Woods Rogers to govern the island in 1718 and drive the pirates out. Yes, this is all there, and many real-life pirates are depicted in the show. The story tells the tales of Anne Bonny, Jack Rackham, Charles Vane, Israel Hands, and even Blackbeard. What a show!

And, of course, the ships and the action packed battle scenes are amazing to watch.

This movie is based on the novels by Patrick O’Brian about Captain Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe), commander of the British man-of-war HMS Surprise during the Napoleonic Wars. The story follows the chase and battle with the French privateer Acheron , who they follow around Cape Horn to the Galapagos Islands, where drama ensues.

The characters in the movie and novels are fictionalized, as are the precise events. But the author drew from real events that occurred during the Napoleonic Wars. The film draws from three different novels in O’Brian’s series.

The film is exceedingly accurate, with all shooting taking place on real ships. Ten days of filming were done at sea, while the rest was shot in the same 20-million-gallon seawater tank in Baja California where Titanic was shot.

The Kon-Tiki Expedition was a 1947 raft journey to prove people from South America could have populated the Polynesian Islands. At the time, most theories believed that the Polynesian people settled from west to east, not east to west. The expedition was led by Norwegian writer Thor Heyerdahl, who wrote the book about it. There was also an Academy Award-winning documentary made by the same name in 1950.

The 2012 version is dramatized but follows the events closely. Heyerdahl’s opponents, at the time, countered that no expedition would likely be successful in reaching Polynesia from Chile. To prove them wrong, he builds a balsawood raft with the same materials and techniques that people would have 1,500 years prior. The 4,300 nautical miles journey doesn’t go smoothly, as you might imagine. But then, I don’t want to give away the movie!

You can’t talk about sea stories without including a good mutiny. And while there are plenty of good tails, few stand the test of time better than the character-driven plot of William Bligh and Fletcher Christian of the HMS Bounty . The story was portrayed in the 1962 MGM film Mutiny on the Bounty and again in 1984 in The Bounty starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins. Both films used extremely accurate replica ships.

Sailing Movie Stories of Survival at Sea

It can’t be denied that many good sea stories revolve around the conflict of man against the elements. The sea is the ultimate element, so many movies about sailing turn toward a darker survival story.

survival stories sailing movies

Most sailors dislike this movie immensely. It has so many flaws that the story takes on more water than the boat in the movie does. But putting those facts aside, it’s a gripping tale of one man (Robert Redford), alone on a sinking cruising boat in the middle of the ocean, struggling to survive.

In 1983, a young couple was asked to ferry a yacht from the South Sea islands, through the sailing routes across the Pacific , to the US. But things go poorly when they run head-first into Hurricane Raymond, a late-season Category 4 storm.

The boat is knocked down and dismasted, and the man is washed overboard. The movie is based on the 2002 book Red Sky in Mourning by Tami Oldham Ashcraft, the sole survivor. In other words, it’s a true story.

Another true story follows amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst (Colin Firth), a dreamer who sets out to enter the 1968 Golden Globe single-hand around-the-world race. The only problem? He doesn’t own a boat or know how to sail. So he gets some sponsors, builds a trimaran, and leaves his home and family behind. Then, as you might suspect, drama ensues.

Documentary Sailing Movies

Sailing documentary films aren’t for everyone and seldom make for a light-hearted date night. But there are some great sailing movies in this genre for those looking for inspiring true stories without all the big-movie hubbub.

documentary sailing films

This movie tells the tale of the all-woman crew in the 1989-1990 Whitbread Round the World Race. It features interviews with Captain Tracy Edwards, who formed the team.

This YouTube documentary is about the true story of the (self-described) worst sailor to ever sail around the world. At 25, Alex Rust left his life as a day trader in Chicago to sail the world. With a sailboat he buys on Craigslist, Rust finds adventure during his four-year journey.

Sea Gypsies is the story of the sailing ketch Infinity , a 120-foot hand-built vessel on a never-ending nomadic voyage. The crew of 16 “wandering miscreants” set out from New Zealand in 2014 during one of the worst winters on record. They stopped in Antarctica on the way to Patagonia, 8,000 miles away. The film has won numerous awards at global film festivals.

You can rent Sea Gypsies: The Far Side of the World on Venmo or Amazon Prime in the US.

Another story about a young man risking it all to find freedom on the ocean, Red Dot on the Ocean tells the story of Matt Rutherford. At age 17 and in jail, Rutherford became inspired and turned his life around. He bought a pocket cruiser sailboat on the internet and cruised from the US to Europe, West Africa, and back to the Caribbean.

He was then inspired by Artic explorers like Shackleton and set out to transit the Northwest Passage by boat. That led to his desire to become the first sailor to circumnavigate the American continents, a 27,000-mile journey.

You can purchase Red Dot on the Ocean on Venmo, Amazon Prime, or Apple TV. You can also hear some great interviews with Rutherford on the On the Wind podcast from 59 North Sailing .

Maidentrip is a movie about sailing around the world, as done by Laura Dekker. In 2009, Dekker decided she would become the youngest person to circumnavigate single-handedly. At one point, the Dutch courts stepped in and prohibited her from leaving. But with legal hurdles cleared, she departed in 2010 for the 518-day voyage.

Dekker sailed the 40-foot ketch Guppy on her trip. She was inspired by Tania Aebi, author of Maiden Voyage and person who previously held the record as the first American woman and youngest person to circumnavigate solo.

Whether you’re in the mood for hardcore action binging Black Sails or a light-hearted escape to the Caribbean with Captain Ron , there’s a little something for everyone. From docs to laughs, there’s a sailing movie to make everyone in your crew happy.

But the best is Captain Ron , seriously.

Matt has been boating around Florida for over 25 years in everything from small powerboats to large cruising catamarans. He currently lives aboard a 38-foot Cabo Rico sailboat with his wife Lucy and adventure dog Chelsea. Together, they cruise between winters in The Bahamas and summers in the Chesapeake Bay.

In the 2006 James Bond movie Casino Royale , Daniel Craig sails into Venice on the Spirit 54 , a classic British yacht that’s celebrated for its elegance; the 54-foot boat was handcrafted in Suffolk, incorporating mahogany topsides and teak decks. By being featured in these James Bond scenes, the yacht not only shot to international fame, it also became the first sailing yacht to travel along the Grand Canal is around 300 years.

Glaston GT150

Live and Let Die was the 007 movie that featured the scene considered to be one of the most dramatic boat chases in the history of James Bond, in which Roger Moore flies through Louisiana with a 110-foot leap through the air. While a number of boats were used to film this scene, the model has become a cult classic as a result.

Here's How the Yacht in the Overboard Remake Compares to Goldie Hawn's Original

By Elizabeth Quinn Brown

Goldie Hawn in the 1987 version of Overboard on the deck of the yacht.

The film Overboard is about the haves and the have-nots—or, in this case, the haves and the have-yachts. The original 1987 film, which stars Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell , and the 2018 remake of the same name—which stars Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris and was released just this month—feature childish yacht owners (Hawn and Derbez, respectively) who have amnesia and are, then, reestablished in less elite but comedic existences. For each of the Overboard films, ultra-luxe boats weren't only a crucial part of the setting—they were also key in demonstrating the characters’ status, and characters’ dedication to status symbols.

In Overboard (1987), the 130-foot Yecats from Kong & Halvorsen in Glenorie, Australia (which was renamed the Attessa in 1992 and the Huntress in 1998), was featured as the S.S. Immaculata. (The same boat was also featured in 1993's Indecent Proposal, which stars Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore.) The interior decoration was characteristic of the era: The bold colors and excessive design complemented Hawn's character's profligate outfits. Brent Thomas, the production designer for Overboard (2018), describes: “There was definitely a campy vibe to it and it was incredibly ’80s, both in palette and in shapes and tones. It worked very well, but it was gauche and over the top and it assaulted your senses a little bit. We wanted to make our yacht in the remake a little more sophisticated and elegant and cleaner and crisper and more pristine and grounded, perhaps. A sort of sleek, smooth, gentleman’s fantasy but with elegance and taste as opposed to the one in the original.”

The yacht used in the 2018 remake of Overboard

The yacht, renamed Birthday Present for the film, used for the 2018 remake of Overboard.

Thomas and his team chose the 164-foot Aspen Alternative for Derbez’s Birthday Present —a 2010 custom creation from Trinity Yachts in Gulfport, Mississippi, that he sourced from Saint Maarten in the Caribbean after a lengthy international search. (In case anyone gets a case of yacht envy, the Aspen Alternative is currently on the market for $18.9 million.) Thomas credits the boat’s aesthetic—its “old-world elegance” with exotic sapele-wood details—as the reason for the decision.

The closet Thomas designed as a nod to Goldie Hawn's in the original film.

The Aspen Alternative’s exteriors and main salon were featured in the film, but the interiors were constructed in Vancouver, Canada. In Overboard (1987), there’s a focus on the estate room’s closets, with Hawn exclaiming at one point, “Well, the entire civilized world knows that all closets are made of cedar!” (Cedar can be more costly and is often considered more prestigious, as it repels moths and moisture.) For this reason, Thomas says he introduced one in the remake, too: “As a little shout-out to Goldie’s closet, I gave Eugenio a fabulous walk-in closet. It looked like a Hugo Boss store with shelves of shirts and shoes. It was lit and beautifully laid out. Again, as a wink and a nod, we gave him a place for a bunch of shoes as well.”

Overboard (1987) contrasts with the remake, but it was the similarities between Hawn and Faris that were especially memorable for Thomas: “Every now and again, I went, ‘Oh my God, Anna looks and sounds just like Goldie!’ There was one moment with her lying back on the area in the bow of the boat. She said something like, “Boy, I could really get used to this lifestyle.’ It was a sunny day where you could lay back and relax, and it felt like the world was your oyster," remembers Thomas fondly. "I smiled and said, 'I get it. I could dig this lifestyle, too.'"

Dunkirk: How Christopher Nolan's film found real war ships for epic battle scenes

Despite working on the ‘pirates of the caribbean’ franchise, ‘castaway’ and ‘captain phillips’, nothing could have prepared marine coordinator neil andrea for the scale of the ‘dunkirk’ shoot, article bookmarked.

Andrea is convinced that Nola’s forthcoming epic is the biggest naval film shoot ever

“We had Messerschmitts flying overhead, thousands of extras on the beach, minesweepers in the background, a 350ft destroyer and torpedo boats all in the same shot.”

This is what Neil Andrea, marine coordinator on forthcoming epic movie Dunkirk , was standing alongside director Christopher Nolan on a single-camera boat with a crane and Imax in the middle of the action last year.

Andrea is convinced this was the biggest naval film shoot ever. Where most films use the magic of CGI to fill in backdrops, Nolan and his team actually filmed on location in Dunkirk with real war ships and fighter planes.

“On certain days, there were up to 60 ships in the water,” enthuses Andrea, veteran marine coordinator of major movies including the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Captain Phillips and National Treasure .

The Moonstone, where Cillian Murphy’s character spent most of his time

“It didn’t matter what the crew had worked on before; when we headed to such scenes, with explosions going off, we were all blown away like never before. It was basically a re-enactment of the real events.”

As most will know, Dunkirk was a famous Second World War evacuation effort of Allied troops from the beaches in and around the Northern French commune, which took place over 10 days in 1940.

A quickly assembled fleet of more than 800 boats – including motor yachts, pleasure steamers and fishing boats – rushed to Dunkirk and rescued nearly 340,000 British, Belgian and French soldiers from the shore.

The then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill described the evacuation as a “miracle of deliverance”. And that is an apt way of describing what Nolan and his team have achieved with their re-enactment.

Andrea had been briefed before the film began shooting and had read the script, which caused a number of expletives to leave his mouth in awe, but nothing could prepare him for the true scale of what he was to work on from January to September 2016.

“I was within four feet of Chris [Nolan] from start to finish of the shoot. He is a brilliant director, but demands perfection and was insistent the film had to look real, not using visual effects in front of a screen above a tank somewhere.

“This meant the experience wasn’t a bed of roses and proved hugely challenging for all concerned, but everyone mucked in to do whatever needed to be done.”

Kenneth Branagh stars as Commander Bolton in the upcoming war thriller

For Andrea, this meant finding and coordinating 60 ships from nine different countries over 5 months. No easy task.

“Finding a WWII ship is actually not that hard, but finding ones that actually work and are able to manoeuvre on a daily basis is tough,” he explains.

The biggest find was the 350-foot long French destroyer, the Maille-Brez: a museum piece from Nantes that had to be towed using a pair of 200 foot tugs.

“We moved the destroyer around manually, and were able to hide the tug boats from shot because the ship was so big,” explains Andrea. “It took a lot of work and we had to be so careful, especially in bad weather, as the ship was being forced to do things it’s not used to.”

The same went for the little boats, which were actual originals used in the real Dunkirk evacuation. They were piloted by the owners who had little filming experience and so had to be briefed beforehand. “It was like herding cats,” laughs Andrea.

The centrepiece of these little boats is the Moonstone, on which Mark Rylance and Cillian Murphy’s characters are based throughout most of the movie.

Andrea found and coordinated 60 ships from nine different countries

“It was such an intimate environment on that boat, which is just 43ft long,” says Andrea. “Aside from the actors, there was just myself, Chris, the first assistant director, DoP and the two camera assistants above deck, the sound, prop and hair and make-up guys below deck.”

There were some pretty hairy days heading to the set in this wooden 1930s boat, which would shake violently when struck by the waves. “Chris would turn to me and say ‘What do you think? Should we turn back?’”, remembers Andrea. Much like the original guys 76 years before, they chose to carry on and complete the mission.

But safety was the watchword. As a Warner Bros Studio led project, there had to be checks and balances, and safety boats on hand at all times. All the departments (stunts, special effects, marine etc) worked closely together to make sure the process was as smooth as possible.

Andrea had to draw on all his experience in and around the water. Fortunately, this was plentiful. Having grown up near Miami Beach, the sea was always close by. Fishing and diving have always been passions. Indeed, Andrea has his own dive suit company: Neptunic Sharksuits.

Testing them has proved a dangerous challenge, however. Andrea has actually stuck his arm in the mouths of sharks. “Their teeth have caused residual cutting. The risk is if a shark grabs your arm and then twists and roles. We had someone who had their arm removed from the shoulder while feeding a shark. The good news is he was able to keep hold of it and had it sowed back on,” says Andrea.

Another passion is photography, which led to camera work back in the 1990s. He started doing documentaries and commercials, before making the natural transition to movies with his business partners, Dan Malone and Bruce Ross of Marine Crew: a full service marine and underwater production outfit.

His first big project was Castaway with Tom Hanks. But he was second unit and had little involvement. Then it was Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday . “That was a crazy experience. Working with Al Pacino on Miami Beach in the 1990s. There were politics with the actors and Stone was pretty intense, but he also knows how to get things done.”

However, it was working on the Pirates films where he got a real flavour of dedicated marine work on a large project, as he was involved in shooting every day.

“To be a part of those films has been incredible,” admits Andrea. “They also involve big boats, but there are only four or five at a time, and they’re built over steel ship structures – some of them half ships, others fake ships. By contrast, for ‘Dunkirk’ the scale of actual working boats being operated by people was much larger.”

Typically, in most films you would have a ship that creates a wake, then visual effects would come in and take that boat out and put in the real boat featured in the movie. Not for Dunkirk . Everything happens in real life in real time.

“Everyone on set was permanently aware and alert – no one was looking at their cell phones or sitting around. They were all completely absorbed in the action… as we hope the audience will be when they see this spectacular film,” concludes Andrea.

‘Dunkirk’ is on nationwide release from 21 July

On board sailing superyacht Regina, star of James Bond film Skyfall

She was the stunning beauty that lit up Skyfall – not Bond girl Bérénice Marlohe but Doğukan Boyacı’s spectacular 56 metre schooner superyacht Regina on which the film was shot. Stewart Campbell meets the 28-year-old Turk who gave Daniel Craig AKA James Bond an experience (and a shower) he’ll never forget.

“When I leave they’re going to kill you,” the haunted beauty Severine purrs at James Bond in a Macau casino, leading him to glance at the three bodyguards watching nearby. “If you survive, I’m on the Chimera. North harbour. Berth seven.” With a vampish smile, the femme fatale from 2012’s Skyfall stands and wishes Bond luck. The secret agent raises his Martini glass to the three heavies before quickly dispatching two of them with a briefcase and leaving the third to become dinner for a hungry Komodo dragon. Cut to Chimera . Severine paces the yacht’s saloon before stepping into a steaming shower. And we all know what happens next.

Only a few people were in on the secret of that now famous shower scene, and one of them was Doğukan Boyacı, the 28-year-old vice-chairman of Pruva Yachting , manufacturer and owner of the 56 metre superyacht known in the film as Chimera , but in reality as Regina . Up until that moment all the shots on board had been legitimate, but the film crew couldn’t get all their gear below deck for Bond and Severine’s moment in the shower so it had to be done in a studio. That small embellishment aside, it was Regina in all her glory up there on the silver screen and Boyacı, her indecently young owner, couldn’t have been more proud.

“We thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for our company,” he says, still clearly energised by the fact that it is his boat that’s been immortalised. “James Bond is one of the biggest trademarks in the world and to use our yacht was a great opportunity. It led to lots of enquiries and Regina had wonderful charter seasons in the Med and Caribbean . Just after the movie came out we got dozens of charter enquiries, and it’s still going on. Now all our clients and brokers know Regina as the ‘ James Bond yacht ’.”

In the film, we’re treated to sweeping shots of Regina as she leans elegantly with the wind on the approach to the island lair of bad-guy Raoul Silva. Bond joins Severine on deck, where the severe-faced henchmen and desolate island in the distance do a great job of highlighting the beauty of this classic-looking ketch.

The superyacht was launched in 2011 for charter, to an exterior design by Turkey’s Ayberk Apaydın and an interior by Aylin Örs. “The aim was to build a classic yacht using only natural materials that would be ultra comfortable for the charter guest,” Boyacı says. “She had to be really strong in sailing and completely different from the normal gulet.” She achieves that with her Roaring Twenties charm and big square deckhouse, which covers an expansive saloon that was transformed into Severine’s bedroom for Skyfall .

Boyacı says it took his company a month to get the yacht ready for the film. “We did lots of modifications. It was really very difficult to prepare the yacht for them but we succeeded finally.” Soft furnishings had to be changed and some re-upholstering was required inside and out. Up top, meanwhile, the rigging was altered to provide the camera with open views of the deck. It was all done in collaboration with EON Productions, maker of Bond films, which did a lot of filming for Skyfall in Turkey, particularly around Istanbul and Fethiye. Regina was chosen by EON almost by chance: one of the Turkish production company’s workers had seen her cruising in Göcek, and EON approached Burgess to find out more about her.

It took eight days for filming to wrap on the yacht and the actors were on board every day, along with director Sam Mendes, although they stayed ashore at night. They wouldn’t have been disappointed with the yacht’s digs, though, with her six comfy cabins housing 12 guests. Boyacı doesn’t have any stories of actors throwing TVs overboard or going wild on raki, and instead reports that the two stars – Daniel Craig and Bérénice Marlohe – were “very polite people”. They loved the yacht, according to Boyacı, telling him that Regina was “quality and luxury”.

Boyacı is a lucky man, therefore, to be able to spend so much time on such a boat. Though the yacht is offered first and foremost for charter, he always makes sure to spend two weeks on board each year – one week in the Med and one in the Caribbean. He spends another week on board Primadonna , his company’s 21.5 metre gulet.

You might think that 28 is too young to be in such an enviable position but Boyacı, son of Pruva founder Bedirhan Boyacı, was not just gifted a top job. He says he started “at the lowest level, in the charter department”, when he was 22, straight out of university. He was eventually promoted to vice-chairman in mid-2014 and is loving the position he occupies. So far, his youth isn’t working against him. “I always feel very young but I have not encountered any problems. I respect people with experience but young people should be given a chance.”

At the time of writing Regina was in the British Virgin Islands , enjoying another successful charter season and it was near here that Boyacı recently spent time on the yacht. He flew over to hook up with her at the Antigua Charter Yacht Show in December, which handily is also his favourite place in the Caribbean. He frequents Catherine’s Café Plage – “delicious food, pleasant atmosphere and a very nice beach” – and the island’s Abracadabra restaurant, where Italian food always precedes a night of dancing. By the time you read this Boyacı will already have jetted back to the Caribbean for another week aboard Regina , this time around St Maarten and St Barths.

Living in Bodrum, Pruva’s vice-chairman gets to see one of his other loves only once a month – the football club Galatasaray. But he plans to travel with the team next season and watch them compete in Europe’s premier club competition, the Champions League.

In the meantime there’s a busy boat manufacturing and charter business to run. In the sheds at the moment is a 37 metre sailing yacht and the company is doing research and development on a 45 metre explorer, which is a break from the more traditional gulets it is better known for. The first gulet it produced, in 1996, was named Doğukan . But this boatbuilding scion says he is most attracted to modern explorer yachts, especially Oceanco’s 81 metre Alfa Nero and the latest output from Icon. On the sailing yacht side, he admires the sleek lines of Alloy’s 67 metre Vertigo .

It’s unlikely you’ll see Bond on a big modern superyacht such as this any time soon unless it’s to take out a bad guy. But that’s just fine. A classic fictional character needs a classic yacht, even one that was built as recently as 2011. In one of the last shots of Regina in Skyfall , we see her from the air, beautiful and poised as she sails easily towards what we soon find out is Severine’s doom. Boyacı could be forgiven, though, for not caring too much about this sad twist in the plot. He was too busy smiling. “To see our yacht on the Hollywood stage? Well, what can I say? It was just an incredible feeling.”

The 45m (150ft) superyacht AQUARIUS has wowed audiences in her debut appearance on the thrilling murder mystery Netflix film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery , which has already proven a huge hit after ranking number one on Netflix’s ‘top 10 Films in the UK today’.

A long-awaited sequel to the original Knives Out film that arrived in 2019, Glass Onion features more opulence and drama as Daniel Craig returns as Detective Benoit Blanc to solve a very layered murder mystery.

While the first  Knives Out  film was set in a very Cluedo-Esque manor house in Massachusetts, USA , the second movie heads to a house called the ‘Glass Onion’ on a private estate on a fictional Greek island called 'Pisceshite Island.'

A number of scenes take place on board yacht AQUARIUS, the first being when the luxury motor yacht transports a group of friends to the lavish private estate of a tech billionaire, but when someone turns up dead, it appears that everyone on the island is hiding their own dark secrets, making each of them a threatening suspect.

How much does the Glass Onion yacht AQUARIUS cost to charter?

She currently has an asking price of €220,000 for a 7-day charter and cruises the Mediterranean all year round.

Glass Onion Location

A destination offering peace and tranquility like no other.

Glass Onion was filmed in Greece and Serbia, primarily on the luscious island of Spetses , a playground for Greek tycoons and the Global Elite. Oozing old-world glamor, nautical charm and scenic beauty, there is no doubt that this is one of the most exclusive charter regions in the Mediterranean.

Beautiful nature, perfect beaches and a complex history ‒ Spetses is an island that has all three.

Viewers will most likely want to know where the luxurious villa they see on their screens is located and they may even wonder if they can stay there themselves. The answer is yes. Filming for Miles’s luxurious villa took place on the nearby mainland at Villa 20 in the Amanzoe resort near the small town of Porto Heli and you can request to book and stay there this summer if you wish.

Amanzoe Resort

Live like the movie stars.

During production, the cast and crew of Glass Onion reportedly stayed at the Amanzoe resort where filming took place in the summer of 2021.

Luxurious, sophisticated and simply divine, the Amanzoe resort is described as a modern-day Acropolis from which 360-degree views encompass olive groves and the Aegean sea. Created by a team who worked hard and methodically to create a "world-class exclusive resort worthy of the incomparable beauty of Greece", it definitely stands out from the crowd.

The masterpiece of Amanzoe’s villas is the Acropolis-inspired Villa 20, the perfect backdrop for a movie like Glass Onion

With the option to stay in luxurious cabanas, pavilions and exclusive villas, each offering private pools with stunning views and fragrant gardens, the resort caters to everyone's needs and wants. Home to a tranquil wellness center, a private beach and a distinctive beach club, which is a destination in itself, it is certain that guests will feel relaxed from the moment they arrive.

The Amanzoe is currently closed and will reopen for an exciting summer season on the 1st April 2023. Giving you a glimpse of the luxurious lifestyle, guests on a Mediterranean yacht charter can enjoy a night at this resort in one of the best 6-bedroom villas for around €13,500 per night in April while in the middle of summer that increases to €17,729 per night.
