A sailboat rental may seem like a whimsical choice for a sailing vacation, but don't be fooled - it's actually a highly practical option. Sailboats are designed to harness the power of the wind, making them a highly efficient and eco-friendly mode of transportation. Plus, their ability to sail upwind means that you can easily explore coastal destinations that would be difficult to reach by motorboat.

In addition to their practicality, sailboats also offer a certain sense of elegance and sophistication. There's something inherently romantic about sailing across the water with nothing but the wind to guide you. And with their classic lines and graceful movement, sailboats are sure to turn heads wherever you go.

Sailboat charters offer a unique opportunity for adventure and exploration. Sailing requires a certain level of skill and knowledge, which means that renting a sailboat is more than just a leisurely activity - it's a chance to challenge yourself and learn something new.

With Click&Boat, there are countless sailing destinations to choose from - the possibilities for adventure are truly endless. You can choose to rent a sailboat with a captain if you are new to the sport or without a captain if you are a seasoned sailor. So are you ready to set sail on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure?

What is the price of renting a sailboat?

When it comes to renting a sailboat, the cost can vary greatly depending on a number of factors. The type of sailboat you choose, the number of guests you will have on board, and the length of the rental are just a few of the factors that can impact the cost. Generally speaking, it is possible to rent a sailboat for less than $100 per day, making it an affordable option for those who want to experience sailing without breaking the bank.

However, for those who are looking for a more luxurious experience, the cost can be much higher. A luxury sailboat can cost $2,100 or more per day. On average, the cost to rent a sailboat is around $750 per day.

It's important to keep in mind that the average price may vary depending on the location you are traveling to. Additionally, if you charter your sailboat with a captain, this will add more to the final price. To get a better understanding of the cost of renting a sailboat, contact local boat owners through Click&Boat's messaging system to find out all the details of the price.

Do I need a boat license to rent a sailboat?

Exploring new countries and islands with a sailing yacht charter can be an unforgettable experience, but it's crucial to be aware of the requirements before you set sail. In some countries, possessing a nautical license is mandatory for renting a sailboat, which can be challenging if you're unfamiliar with the process.

How to get a license to rent a sailboat:

If you plan to charter a sailboat in Europe, obtaining a nautical license isn't typically necessary. Most countries, including sought-after sailing destinations such as Greece and Croatia, allow boat rentals without special qualifications. Nonetheless, some countries have exceptions, such as Italy, where a certificate of competence is required to rent a sailboat. This can be obtained by taking a sailing course or passing an exam at a sailing school.

If you lack the necessary license or nautical permit, Click&Boat offers the option of renting a sailboat with a captain. This way, a professional sailor can guide the boat while you can relax. If you're a sailing enthusiast, don't miss out on the opportunity to learn fundamental sailing techniques, organization, boat layout, basic sailor's knots, and more from a professional. It's a unique opportunity to prepare yourself for future sailing adventures.

What are the best destinations to rent a sailboat?

The Mediterranean is a perfect destination for a first-time or advanced sailor. With crystal-clear calm waters, beautiful beaches, and picturesque coastal towns, the conditions are perfect. Some of the most popular sailing destinations in the Mediterranean include Greece, Croatia, and Italy. There are also tons of small islands and lesser-known beaches that are beautiful hidden gems as well.

The Caribbean is also a popular destination for a sailing vacation. With its warm, tropical climate, turquoise waters, and beautiful islands, the Caribbean is a true paradise for sailing enthusiasts. Popular sailing destinations in the Caribbean include the British Virgin Islands, the Grenadines, and the Bahamas.

For those looking for a more remote and adventurous sailing experience, the South Pacific is an excellent choice. The islands of Tahiti, Fiji, and Tonga offer some of the most spectacular sailing destinations in the world, with crystal-clear waters, beautiful coral reefs, and stunning scenery. Whether you're an experienced sailor or a beginner, there's something for everyone in the South Pacific.

March 25, 2022 Russia-Ukraine news

By Jessie Yeung , Adam Renton, Sana Noor Haq, Adrienne Vogt , Melissa Macaya, Ed Upright, George Ramsay, Aditi Sangal and Meg Wagner , CNN

The Russian ship destroyed in Berdyansk was the "Saratov," says Ukraine

From CNN's Andrew Carey in Lviv

In this satellite photo smoke rises after an attack that Ukraine's navy said sank a large Russian landing ship in the port city of Berdyansk, Ukraine, on March 24.

Ukrainian armed forces named the Russian landing ship they say they attacked and destroyed in Berdyansk as the "Saratov," in a statement on Friday.

In earlier reporting , the ship was named as the "Orsk."

“In the Azov operational zone, according to updated information, a large landing ship 'Saratov' was destroyed during the attack on the occupied Berdyansk port," the statement said.

The statement identified the two other large landing ships -- the "Caesar Kunikov" and "Novocherkassk" -- that were also said to have been destroyed during the attack.

"Other losses of the enemy are being clarified," the statement said.

Ukrainian  armed forces said they destroyed the large  Russian  landing ship at the port of Berdyansk in southern Ukraine on Thursday.

The port, which had recently been occupied by Russian forces with several Russian warships in dock, was rocked by a series of heavy explosions soon after dawn.

Social media videos showed fires raging at the dockside, with a series of secondary explosions reverberating across the city.

Several Russian ships had been unloading military equipment at Berdyansk in recent days, according to reports from the port by Russian media outlets.

Russia claims its forces destroyed large fuel depot in Ukraine with cruise missiles

From CNN's Radina Gigova

Russian Ministry of Defense spokesman Igor Konashenkov claimed Friday that Russian forces destroyed "the largest of the remaining fuel depots" near Kyiv, with a strike carried out with sea-launched Kalibr cruise missiles .

"On the evening of March 24, a strike was carried out with sea-launched Kalibr precision cruise missiles on a fuel base in Kalynovka, outside Kyiv," Konashenkov claimed.

"The largest of the remaining fuel depot of the Ukrainian armed forces, which supplied fuel to military units in the central part of the country, was destroyed," Konashenkov added.

CNN could not immediately verify that claim.

More details have emerged this week about the military arsenal that Russia is using in Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden confirmed on Monday that Russia has also used  hypersonic missiles  in its invasion.

"And if you'll notice, (Russia has) just launched the hypersonic missile, because it's the only thing that they can get through with absolute certainty," Biden said. "It's a consequential weapon ... it's almost impossible to stop it. There's a reason they're using it."

But British intelligence and even Biden's own defense secretary have downplayed Russia's use of its air-launched Kinzhal missiles.

CNN's Brad Lendon contributed reporting to this post.

Us and eu announce task force on reducing dependence on russian oil and gas.

From CNN's Kevin Liptak

The Peakshaver liquid natural gas (LNG) installation and storage site, operated by NV Nederlandse Gasunie, at the Port of Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on July 13.

US President Joe Biden and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen on Friday announced a joint task force in an effort to wean Europe from its dependence on Russian oil and gas.

The panel, chaired by representatives from the White House and the European Commission, will aim to find alternative supplies of liquified natural gas and reduce overall demand for natural gas.

The United States will work toward supplying Europe with at least 15 billion cubic meters of liquified natural gas in 2022, in partnership with other nations, the White House said.

Some context: Europe's dependence on Russian gas and oil has proved a major sticking point in Western efforts to punish Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. While the US banned Russian energy imports, Europe found it far more difficult to cut off its supplies.

The group will also work toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions by paring down methane emissions and using clean energy.

UK Defense Ministry: Ukraine has reoccupied towns and defensive positions east of Kyiv

A Ukrainian military vehicle is seen on the road in Kyiv, Ukraine, on March 24.

Ukrainian forces have retaken towns and defensive positions on the eastern outskirts of Kyiv, Britain's Ministry of Defence said Friday in its latest intelligence update.

"Ukrainian counter-attacks, and Russian Forces falling back on overextended supply lines, has allowed Ukraine to re-occupy town and defensive positions up to 35 kilometers (21 miles) east of Kyiv," the ministry said.  "Ukrainian Forces are likely to continue to attempt to push Russian Forces back along the north-western axis from Kyiv towards Hostomel Airfield."

Meanwhile, the advance of Russian forces toward the Black Sea port city of Odesa was stalling, the ministry said.

"Russian forces are still attempting to circumvent Mykolaiv as they look to drive west towards Odesa with their progress being slowed by logistic issues and Ukrainian resistance," the ministry added.

Some context: According to official Ukrainian accounts, the country's forces have retaken territory to the east of Kyiv following intense fighting Thursday, reversing previous Russian gains. Social media videos geolocated by CNN showed Ukrainian troops along with some captured Russian armor in the small settlement of Lukyanovka, some 35 miles (55 kilometers) east of the capital.

Analysis: Here's why Biden is going to Poland

Analysis from CNN's Stephen Collinson

If there's one nation that understands  Ukraine's torment , it's Poland, which welcomes  President Joe Biden  on Friday as part of  his emergency mission  to shore up NATO's defenses following Russia's brutal invasion.

In the United States, Biden's warnings that democracy is under siege from menacing autocrats can seem remote, even after  former President Donald Trump's  US Capitol insurrection and attempt to steal the 2020 election.

But in Poland, which neighbors  Ukraine , freedom is fresh enough to still be a novelty. In a tortured 20th-century history, the country — torn between East and West — was repeatedly conquered, was ruled by foreign tyrants and saw millions of its people purged or driven as refugees from homes destroyed by warfare.

Poland again finds itself on the front line of conflict. It's on the dividing line between states in the NATO club, to which it now belongs, and President Vladimir Putin's Russian orbit, which includes another Polish neighbor, Belarus. Poland has opened its borders to more than 2 million of the nearly  3.7 million Ukrainians  who have fled Putin's onslaught, and the war came close to its borders with a Russian strike on a base in western Ukraine earlier this month.

Like Ukraine, Poland lived for decades under Moscow's Communist iron fist. Like Ukrainians, Poles are often gritty, are deeply suspicious of Russians and have fighting for their freedom and sovereignty ingrained in their DNA. Unlike Ukraine, one of the founding republics of the Soviet Union, Poland made it to the West after decades under the Warsaw Pact umbrella. And in addition to being in NATO, it's a member of the European Union, albeit one that has had tensions recently with Brussels over its own flirtations with populist nationalism.

As Putin's threat mounted in recent years, Poland hosted rotations of US troops and jets. In February, before Putin invaded Ukraine, Poland was one of the nations to which Biden ordered  3,000 troops  to bolster the alliance's eastern flank. If the war in Ukraine spills over into a broader conflict between Russia and the West, a frightening prospect, there's a good chance it could happen in Poland.

With world's eyes on war in Ukraine, North Korea tests a new long-range missile

From CNN's Yoonjung Seo, Gawon Bae, Emiko Jozuka and Brad Lendon

North Korean state media said on Friday that leader Kim Jong Un had directly guided the launch of the weapon, known as the Hwasong-17, its most advanced to date.

On Thursday, as Western leaders gathered in Brussels for security summits, North Korea launched what it said was a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) — its first long-range test in more than four years.

According to analysts , the recent spate of North Korean missile tests suggest the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, is attempting to show an increasingly turbulent world that Pyongyang remains a player in the struggle for power and influence.

"North Korea refuses to be ignored and may be trying to take advantage of global preoccupation with the war in Ukraine to force a fait accompli on its status as a nuclear weapons state," Leif-Eric Easley, associate professor of international studies at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, told CNN. "North Korea is nowhere near initiating aggression on the scale of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But Pyongyang's ambitions likewise exceed self-defense as it wants to overturn the postwar security order in Asia."

First on cnn: major infrastructure in central izyum is destroyed, new satellite images show.

From CNN's Paul P. Murphy

A satellite image shows a crater in a field in central Izyum.  On one side of the crater is the burnt wreckage of a school, on the other side a football field is visible.

Intense clashes around Izyum have left much of the city destroyed, city officials say, with new satellite images revealing the extent of the devastation in the eastern Ukrainian city.

The images were taken on Thursday by Maxar Technologies.

They show a massive crater about 40 feet (12 meters) wide in a field in the city's central area. The burnt wreckage of a school lies on one side of the crater, with a football field on the other. Part of a hospital across the street is also seen destroyed.

A large boiler building and several residential building around it were destroyed.

The city has been caught in the crossfire as Russia attempts to link advances made in the Kharkiv region of northern Ukraine with its stronghold in the far east of the country.

Council deputy Max Strelnyk told CNN on Thursday the city had been “completely destroyed” by Russian aircraft and artillery, even as fierce battles continued inside Izyum for control of the ground.

A convoy of Russian self-propelled artillery is seen moving south towards Izyum.

North of the school in the satellite images, a large boiler building and every nearby residential building appears destroyed. There does not appear to be any identifiable military targets in this part of central Izyum.

About 3 miles (5 kilometers) northwest of Izyum, a convoy of Russian self-propelled artillery is seen moving toward the city.

Russian troops now control the city sectors on the northern bank of the Seversky Donets River, which splits Izyum in half, Strelnyk said. The Ukrainians control the city sectors on the southern bank of the river.

Three miles northeast of the city, Russian self-propelled artillery are also seen positioned in a field, their turrets pointing toward central Izyum.

Another image shows two vehicle bridges crossing the Seversky Donets River have been partially destroyed, in what appears to be a purposeful strike to stop a Russian advance across the river.

But the Russians have found a way around, and are now advancing on the city from the south.

To bypass the blown bridges, the Russians have erected two pontoon bridges over the Seversky Donets River to encircle the city. A mile from those bridges, on the southern bank of the river, a convoy of tanks are seen moving along a highway toward the Ukrainian-controlled sectors of Izyum.

Japan adds 25 more Russians to sanctions list in response to Ukraine war

From CNN’s Emiko Jozuka and Yuki Kurihara in Tokyo

Japan will freeze the assets of 25 more Russian citizens and ban exports to 81 Russian organizations, the country's Ministry of Finance said in a news release on Friday.

It brings the total number of Russians targeted by Japan's asset freezes to 101 people.

Targets of the new sanctions include Igor Shuvalov,  a former Russian deputy prime minister  and chairman of major state-owned bank Vnesheconombank, and five of oligarch Sergey Chemezov's relatives, according to Japan's Finance Ministry.

The export of luxury goods will also be banned, the ministry said.

Tokyo has unveiled a raft of punitive measures against Moscow in recent weeks. The latest sanctions come as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida pledged on Wednesday to unveil more support for Ukraine at the G7 summit in Brussels.

Western oil and gas companies have paid $15B in taxes to Russia since it annexed Crimea, NGOs say

From CNN's Angela Dewan

Nine European and US fossil fuel companies have paid a collective  $15.8 billion to Russia  in various forms of taxes and fees since the country annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, a group of NGOs said Thursday.

The groups, Global Witness, Greenpeace USA and Oil Change International, used data from Oslo-based Rystad Energy, an independent energy research firm , to calculate how much money oil and gas companies  based in North America and Europe had sent to the Russian state. They looked only at companies with exploration and production operations in Russia.

They looked at royalties, export duties, bonuses, taxes and fees, as well as "government profit oil," which includes the value of any oil the  companies may have given to Russia. It came up with a list of nine companies from these regions that had paid the most money to Russia. All those payments were legal, and other multinational companies outside the energy sector have also have made similar kinds of payments to the Russian state.

Shell,  which is registered in the UK, sent $7.85 billion, the highest amount of the companies listed, the groups said in a statement, shared first with CNN. It was followed by US-based ExxonMobil ($2.81 billion). Two companies registered in Germany, Wintershall and Wintershall DEA, which have since merged, paid a combined total of $2.86 billion. BP, the British multinational oil and gas company, paid $817 million, the data from Rystad shows.

The data was shared amid criticisms that the West's purchases of Russian coal, oil and gas — which are largely state-owned assets — have helped fund Russia's war in Ukraine. The addition of taxes, fees and royalties for companies that have chosen to operate in Russia underscores how much capital Western energy companies have transferred to Russia.

The three groups that compiled the data said that while the $15.8 billion figure was substantial, the companies identified were also responsible for tens of billions of dollars more flowing to the Russian state because of stakes they hold in Russian oil and gas companies.

How one Russian city became the country’s SECOND largest - overnight!

sailboat near me

While Russians were celebrating the New Year, the city of Saratov on the Volga River grew fivefold and, thus, became the second largest city in the country after Moscow, displacing St. Petersburg. Since January 1, 2022, a huge neighboring suburban district has been annexed to Saratov and the city area has grown to 2,100 square kilometers, while less than a million people live there. For comparison, the area of Moscow is 2,500 square kilometers and the population is 15 times larger. What’s the phenomenon of Saratov and why do locals joke that it is impossible to leave it (or are they not joking)?

Cozy Russian province on the Volga

Saratov is an ancient merchant city founded in the 16th century, with a beautiful downtown where you can see buildings of different styles and epochs: wooden houses with carved window surroundings, luxurious pre-revolutionary mansions, monumental Soviet factories.

“The center of Saratov is located in a hollow surrounded by hills, which offer a stunning view of the city itself, the Volga and the visiting card of Saratov - a bridge over the Volga almost three kilometers long, which leads to the neighboring city of Engels,” says local resident Ksenia Chernova.

You can step into the past by walking around Saratov, even just looking at your feet: manhole covers, produced by local iron foundries before the 1917 Revolution, with inscriptions in old Russian, are still preserved on the streets, according to Ksenia.

One of the most noteworthy buildings in the city is the conservatory of the early 20th century built in a pseudo-Gothic style, considered the leading music school of the country, where young musicians from all regions strive to enroll. Right behind this building begins a long pedestrian street with cozy cafes, souvenir kiosks and leisurely pedestrian areas. If you visit only this central area, you’ll still enjoy a real, relaxing Russian province at its best!

But the outskirts of the city leave a less pleasant impression: typical panel houses, courtyards filled with cars, constant traffic jams, snow-covered streets that no one clears. From time to time, locals call the outskirts a “communal hell” on social networks: personal and public transport gets stuck in snowdrifts and sidewalks and stairs in winter generally turn into Mount Everest.

In Russia, Saratov is known as “the city from which it is impossible to leave” - memes with this statement are regularly posted by locals.

(the inscription: People on the train tried to leave Saratov, but…)

The reason for such jokes is that after bad weather, it’s simply impossible to drive around the city, because of the poor snow cleaning, the lack of storm drains and bad road conditions that turn streets into streams of impassable dirt.

In fact, Saratov Region consistently tops Russian cities with a decreasing population. And here’s the paradox - the population is shrinking, but the city itself is growing in size. And here’s why.

Saratov gets BIGGER!

sailboat near me

In the Soviet years, the city’s population was approaching a million. Back then, cities with a million or more received the right to build a subway, as happened in Samara, Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan, which also stand on the Volga. Indeed, there was a metro project for Saratov in the late 1980s, but then the Soviet Union collapsed and transport problems turned out to be less important than economic ones. Defense and engineering plants were closed, due to the transition from a planned to a market economy, and people found themselves out of work. But, today, the idea of expanding the city has arisen again. In 2022, 79 nearby villages were annexed to Saratov.

sailboat near me

And not because of the dreams of having a subway. The city administration explains that the growth of the city makes federal funds for development accessible, which will lead to improving the infrastructure and creating more enterprises and working places.

And Saratov isn’t planning on stopping there. For many years, it has been looking to annex the town of Engels and other nearby settlements.

This past Spring, researchers from the Center for Jewish Art carried out an epic, more than 4,000-kilometer journey along the Volga River researching Jewish material heritage. The preliminary, 63-page report from the trip is now available online.

The team, led by CJA Director Vladimir Levin, traveled between May 23 and June 9 along a route that started northwest of Moscow and followed the river to the Caspian Sea. They visited 13 towns and cities along the way, carrying out a documentation of 16 synagogues, 13 Jewish cemeteries , and four collections of Judaica.

The places visited included:  Tver ,  Rybinsk ,  Yaroslavl ,  Kostroma ,   Nizhnii Novgorod ,   Kazan ,   Ulyanovsk (former Simbirsk),   Samara ,   Buzuluk ,   Syzran ,  Saratov ,   Volgograd (former Tsaritsyn and Stalingrad), and   Astrakhan.

The research trip along the Volga was a continuation of   a systematic documentation of Jewish material culture beyond the old centers of Jewish settlement, which the CJA launched with a trip to Siberia in 2015, the report states.

Taken in the conceptual framework of “Frontier Jews,” i.e. the Jews who settle in areas without established Jewish communities, the research on the material culture of new Jewish collectives enables to ask questions about the transfer of traditions and culture, about adjusting the customs and habits brought from the old home to the new environment, about the emergence of new local identities and the creation of relationships with new surrounding populations, which had no previous  experience of dealing with Jews. Material culture is an effective means for answering these questions.

Regarding cemeteries, it notes that a mong thirteen cities visited, only one “old” Jewish cemetery is still preserved — the old Jewish cemetery in Astrakhan, dating   from the middle of the nineteenth century.

All other older cemeteries were demolished during the Soviet era. The cemeteries surveyed during the research trip were established either in the last decades of the nineteenth century or after World War Two.

There are also extensive summaries of the history of Jews along the Volga, up until today,  as well as a general discussion of synagogue architecture and Jewish cemetery styles.

I deeply appreciate all of this information and everyone’s shares here. My great grandparents were Volga Germans, with the Jewish last name Gossman. Sadly, it seems it was necessary for their safety to stop identifying as Jewish, but my mother and I have both found our way back to our faith.

history shows that in 1900 odessa had 57 per cent jewish people. my family had to suddenly leave in 1903. their names were schumacher Hoffmann and renner. all jewish sounding..weve also wondered if we were jewish. my grammar id was destroyed but they claimed to be lutheran.

My great grandfather worked for Czar Nicholas. His namw was Nickolas Bieber his wife Etkaterina Leachman. The fled Russia in the Rothamel area in 1915 to America. I know I have ashkenazi jewish blood through 23 and me. I am very curious to see if there are any relatives left in that region. They literally left in the the middle of the night abd fled to America. 3 years later Czar Nicholas’s family was murdered.

My Grandfather and others of his family emigrated to the US from he Saratov area. We were raised as Lutheran but our family name – originally spelled Scheuermann shows Ashkenazic Jewish heritage. My Great-grandfather on my father’s side was Befus/Bafus. His wife, also born in Russia was Paffenroth/Poffenroth…. I’m curious about the connection and where the German family came from before they arrived in and lived in Yagodnaya Polyana, Saratov, Russia and where both sides of my family were born.

Are you Wesley’s Sister

Heidi! We are in the same boat! Lots of jewish surnames in my ancestry and they are forsure from saratov on the volga. I know Christian germans settled thier but my family has no religious traditions. My grandparents and great grandparents say that we were just not relgious but we have jewish cultural traditions. So curious about this as i have always been drawn the the jewish people. Let me know of you know anything!

My grandmother, Pauline Job, was descended from that “prophet of the gentiles” in sacred texts (Job/Ayub). Her family practiced Jewish faith, but her father later converted to Christianity. When they emigrated they were part of the Lutheran “Volga Triangle” that settled in that area of the Dakotas. My own mother was born in Hosmer, S.D.

I would appreciate some help if someone out there knows anything about my family. I am a Jew-by-choice, but I believe that some of my ancestors on my mother’s side were German/Russian Jews from areas around the southern part of the Volga. My grandmother’s maiden name was Anschutz. I recently learned that I have quite a bit of Russian blood. Thank you to anyone who might have information. I would so love to be a real Jew.

Heidi, I do believe you are Jewish. I too have Jewish family who are Germans from Russia (though it was a largely Lutheran community) who lived in the Volga area. I encourage you to keep researching your family names, there is more information added all the time. Blessing and shalom to you.

March 27, 2024 - Baltimore Key Bridge collapse

By Kathleen Magramo , Antoinette Radford, Alisha Ebrahimji , Maureen Chowdhury , Elise Hammond , Tori B. Powell and Aditi Sangal , CNN

Our live coverage of the Baltimore bridge collapse has moved here .

Here's what you should know about the Key Bridge collapse

From CNN staff

A Marine Emergency Team boat passes the wreckage of the Dali cargo vessel in Baltimore on Tuesday.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

  • The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
  • Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
  • The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
  • Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

 From CNN's Sarah Engel

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board."

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

From CNN's Aditi Sangal

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

From CNN's Tori B. Powell

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

People look at the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge while visiting Fort McHenry in Baltimore on Wednesday.

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

This post has been updated with more quotes from Homendy.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.

Saratov, Russia

Saratov, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Saratov

Full-flowing Volga gave birth to many cities. One of these cities is Saratov, a former center of the largest Russian province, a city of merchants, gold miners and first Russian manufacturers. Saratov is still has the charm of those times. Old farmsteads, bank buildings, retail and apartment houses – all that is a part of Saratov’s history, which are proudly demonstrated to numerous tourists now.

People go to Saratov not to find adventures. This region is deprived of high dangerous mountain hills, swift rivers, sea coasts, promising an exciting extreme leisure. Instead one can find here mixed forests, groves, woods, deserts and steppes. The mixed flora and fauna of Asia and Europe has created here unseen picturesque scenes. There are 124 monuments of nature here.

The natural diversity of Saratov region creates favorable conditions for active recreation both in summer and in winter. In winter, ski routes are ready for fans of skiing sport whereas during warm seasons fishing, hunting, active water recreation, namely rowing and canoeing, sailing, yachting, boat, motor boat and water scooter trips are available for toursists.

Saratov is located on the right bank of Volga, and surrounded on three sides with not high mountains. The city’s name originated from Tatar word “sara tau” – “yellow mountain”. The main trade routes from the Black Sea, Caucasus, Persia, Khorezm, and the Urals and, of course, from Russia ran across Saratov Povolj’e (Volga Region).

According to one of the versions, the city was established in 1584-1589 years approximately, on the place of a Tatar village, where Saratovka river fell into. Another version says that the city was found in 1590, and it was built as a guard point on the Volga way. The exact location of the first settlement was not established.

The town was burned down in 1613 year, and in 1674 was moved to the right bank of Volga River, that is to say, to its present position. Gradually Saratov became famous as a merchant city. That time people were engaged in pottery, selling of fish, salt and bread. The manufacturing production was well-developed. And Saratov became a capital of the Volga Region. It was the 3rd largest city after Moscow and Petersburg among the cities of Russia.

In 1722 Peter I visited this city on his way to Persia as well. In 1781 a famous rebel Emel’yan Pugachev which took the decision to occupy the city, entered Saratov. Those historical facts were described in the novel “The Captain's Daughter” by A.S. Pushkin. From a shabby town into which Saratov turned after Pugachev’s invasion, it became soon a rich merchant city and remained to be the largest cities of the Volga Region till 20-ies of XX century. In USSR Saratov was a closed city. There were several big enterprises of defense industry, particularly, the Saratov aviation plant.

Saratov is a motherland of many famous Russian figures. Nikolay Chernyshevskoy – Russian publicist, writer and literary critic, was born in Saratov. Such actors as Sergey Phillipov, Oleg Tabakov and Evgeniy Mironov were born here.

Many old farmsteads and hundreds of architecture monuments are preserved in Saratov Region. The cultural tourist complex “The Old City of Uvek”, which is situated on the place of an ancient settlement and whose prosperity period fell to the 12th century is not far from Saratov.

Saratov was home to both a Lutheran parish and a Roman Catholic parish which served the ethnic Germans living in this city.

CONGREGATIONS

St. Clement Catholic Church

St. John Lutheran Church

St. Mary Lutheran Church

The Lutheran parish in Saratov was officially organized in 1793, although Pastor Ahlbaum was active in the city before then.

The Pope established the Diocese of Tiraspol, headquartered in Saratov on 3 July 1848. During its existence, there were five bishops:

Ferdinand Helanus Kahn (1850-1864) Franz Xavier Zottmann  (1872-1888) Anton Johann Zerr  (1889-1902) Eduard von der Ropp (1902-1903) Joseph Aloysius Kessler  (1904-1930)

This diocese went inactive in 1930 with the resignation of Bishop Kessler and officially vacant in 1933 when he died. It was formally "surpressed" in 2002 when the new Diocese of St. Clement in Saratov was established.

The Catholic parishners of Saratov built a wooden church which was consecrated in 1805. This building was used until 1880 when a new brick building was erected. The architect was M. N. Grudistova, and the new building was consecrated to St. Clement (St. Klemens in German) when it was completed in 1881. Today the structure serves as a movie theatre called "Pioneer."

In the post-Soviet era, the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 2001 in Saratov. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria (ELCI). There is a chapel in Saratov, and the pastor serving there is Olav Panchu.

There were three frontier garrisons founded to protect merchant ships traveling on the Volga River: Saratov (1584), Samara (1586), and Tsaritsyn (1589). Over the next century, the settlements were rebuilt on first one side of the Volga and then the other following a series of natural disasters.  The 1670 peasant revolt led by Stepan Razin also thwarted development of these cities.

Saratov was the first point of arrival for the German colonists and the location of the Kontora (Office of Immigrant Oversite) following the establishment of the colonies in the 1760's. From its beginning as a provincial outpost, Saratov grew to become a prosperous city and served as the center of industry for the Volga German colonists.
