Maiden's History

A photo of some men painting a boat.

1988, August, Maiden being refitted at Hamble Marina, Hamble River, Hampshire UK

The 58ft Maiden began life in 1979 as DISQUE D’OR 3 on the design table of the talented and prolific boat designer Bruce Farr. The commission for the design came from the Swiss Ocean Racing Club and called for a lightish displacement, easily handled, ocean racing yacht for long passage races including the 1981-82 Whitbread Round the World Race. The yacht - DISQUE D’OR 3 - was skippered by Pierre Fehlmann, one of Switzerland’s best known all-round yachtsmen, who had also competed in the previous Whitbread Round the World Race. DISQUE D’OR 3 finished 4th overall in the 1981-82 Whitbread race.

In 1986 a young cook and the only girl on the South African boat Atlantic Privateer was rounding Cape Horn in the 85/86 Whitbread Round the World Race. Out in the icy wastes of the Southern Ocean there was one other boat rounding the Horn sailed by legendary single handed sailor Bertie Reed on his 58ft Bruce Farr designed Stabilo Boss as they raced in the BOC Single Handed Round the World Race. Reed had bought Disque D’or 3 and renamed her after his sponsor. Tracy Edwards was the young cook, and as they spoke on the radio to Bertie, she could not have had any idea that just three years later she would be crossing the start line in that very boat to be renamed Maiden. After the BOC, Stabilo Boss was renamed Prestige and languished in Cape Town all but forgotten.

Tracy finished the 85/86 WRTWR and knew she wanted to go round again but this time with an all-female crew! The ‘Maiden Great Britain’ project was born. The initial announcement of an isbelief from the racing world but Tracy and her team set about raising the funds and putting a crew together. Based in Hamble, their initial idea was a Tony Castro designed yacht but it took so long to raise the funding that idea was scrapped. In 1987 Tracy mortgaged her house to buy a “wreck with a pedigree”. Prestige was put on a ship and brought to Southampton in England where she was unloaded into the water watched by a sceptical crowd! Motoring Prestige up river to Hamble marina she began to sink but after much frantic bailing she arrived to the cheers of the Maiden crew.

1989, May, Maiden’s refurbishment completed “all ship shape and Bristol fashion” ready to take the plunge.

1989, September, Maiden makes her way to the start line of the WRTWR.

Maiden and the girls entered her first race in December 1988. She won the Route of Discovery Race from Cadiz to Santa Domingo beating all the other Whitbread boats, including Pierre Fehlmann’s UBS!!

At 11am on 2nd September 1989 Maiden squared up on the start line of the Whitbread Round the World Race. The girls waved goodbye to their Godmother and as the gun resounded around the Solent set off amongst the 22 strong fleet to race the first leg to Uruguay. And the rest, as they say, is history! Maiden came 3rd in her class on that leg and although the girls were disappointed, the yachting press was amazed they had got there!!

After a three week stopover they took on the 7,300 mile marathon from Uruguay, through the treacherous South Ocean to Australia. They went further south than the other boats in their class, survived icebergs, 30 degree below freezing temperatures, frostbite, contaminated gas and no satellite signal for 9 days. Two men from competitor yacht, Creightons Naturally, went overboard and although both were retrieved Anthony Phillips could not be resuscitated, however Bart van den Dwey was still alive although suffering from salt ingestion and hypothermia. Doctor Claire Russell stayed on Maiden’s radio for two days giving advice on how to keep him alive.

Despite the ferocity of the leg, Maiden sailed into Perth, Australia ten days later she was a full 24 hours ahead of her nearest rival and a proud Tracy and her team were presented with the Beefeater Trophy. Jaws in the sailing world dropped!!

A well-earned rest in Perth was followed by a short hop of 14 days across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand during which they celebrated Christmas Day. Maiden also won this leg, extending her lead to 28 hours overall. In New Zealand, Maiden had a thorough overhaul, the mast repaired and rigging checked before the next Southern Ocean leg, round Cape Horn to Uruguay. It was another tough leg and Maiden lost her overall lead when she nearly sank rounding Cape Horn! She limped to Uruguay where her Godmother The Duchess of York welcomed them. The girls then spent a wonderful day with her mother, Susan Barrantes at her Polo ranch in Argentina.

The leg to Ft Lauderdale in Florida was not a happy one unfortunately with Maiden coming in third place but a trip to Disneyland cheered the crew up.

Finish in Southampton 1990

Maiden set off on her final leg to Southampton. After surviving a tornado and the final five days with no food, the girls arrived home to a rapturous welcome.Their final position was 2nd place overall in their class; the best result for aBritish boat in 17 years and unbeaten to this day.

Maiden was sold and the girls scattered to the four corners of the earth. 27 years later, Maiden is coming home to the UK.

John Chittenden and the full-time Creightons Naturally crew knew that.

They even discussed it before embarking on the Whitbread Round the World Race.

“Originally, the one thing I thought would make the race a washout would be losing someone,” said Chittenden, the 49-year-old skipper of the 80-foot sloop. “But each person individually decided it would be their wish for the rest of us to go on if they died.”

Nobody expected it to happen, however.

“You consider it, but you don’t think it actually can happen,” Jo Chittenden, the skipper’s 22-year-old daughter, said Thursday after the British cruiser-class entry arrived in Fort Lauderdale at 8:22 a.m. “It’s only hypothetical. But when it happens, it’s very real.”

Creightons Naturally crewmen Bart van den Dwey and Tony Phillips were swept overboard by two giant waves into the icy Southern Ocean at 3:45 a.m. Nov. 12. The accident occurred during the 7,650-mile second leg from Uruguay to Fremantle, Australia.

A half-hour later, van den Dwey, a 26-year-old from Belgium, was rescued, alive but unconscious. Another 15 minutes passed before Phillips was found.

By then, the 36-year-old cousin to Princess Anne’s husband Capt. Mark Phillips, had died from exposure. Crew members spent two hours trying to resuscitate him, to no avail.

“Once we lost him, we really didn’t have much motivation to continue,” said Jo Chittenden, who crews on her father’s yacht. “We had lost a bloody good friend.”

Chittenden, the former cruising secretary of the Royal Yachting Association, immediately realized family wishes would override any pre- ordained decision.

“At that point, what was important was doing what Tony’s parents wanted and not worrying about the rest of the race,” Chittenden said. “If his parents wanted us to take him to South Africa and bury him ashore, we would have had to do that.”

Chittenden altered the yacht’s course and headed for land even before notifying Phillips’ next of kin. Phillips’ parents asked that their son be buried at sea, however.

“I realized I might lose four or five members of my crew if I immediately told everyone we were going to continue,” Chittenden said. “So I decided to leave them be and let them come to terms themselves.”

The crew eventually snapped out of its depression and got on with the world’s longest fully-crewed yacht race. The 32,932-mile event started in Southampton, England, Sept. 2.

Creightons Naturally was one of three yachts to finish the 5,475-mile fifth leg from Uruguay to Fort Lauderdale on Thursday.

The first to arrive was Dirk Nauta of Holland’s 63-foot sloop Equity & Law II, which crossed the finish line 1 mile east of Port Everglades at 7:45 a.m. The lone entry in Division C, Equity & Law II is the only yacht in the race guaranteed winning a fleet championship.

Bob Salmon’s 80-foot Liverpool Enterprise, the only unsponsored and non- profit entry in the race, arrived at 12:36 p.m. It finished the leg last in the 14-yacht Division A, which is comprised entirely of maxi yachts 70 feet or more.

Only six of the 22 yachts from 13 countries competing have yet to finish the fifth leg. Patrick Tabarly’s 58-foot L’Esprit de Liberte, which won the 1985-86 Whitbread on corrected time, was predicted to arrive Friday around 6 p.m. L’Esprit, which went into the fifth leg leading Division D in elapsed time, will be the first of the smaller yachts to finish.

Tracy Edwards of Great Britain’s all-woman Maiden crew was 30 miles off San Salvador in the Bahamas Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Edwards was bogged down by light winds and said in a telephone call that she didn’t expect to reach Fort Lauderdale until late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

Creightons Naturally, meanwhile, continued to increase the distance between itself and its only rival in the cruiser class, Andrew Coghill of Great Britain’s 72-foot With Integrity. The latter yacht is expected Saturday about 1:15 p.m.

Tracy Edwards MBE and title sponsor of The Maiden Factor World Tour, DP World, the global logistics leader, are delighted to announce that the iconic yacht Maiden and her all-female crew will enter the 2023 Ocean Globe Race.

Maiden will take a break from her world tour, which began in September 2021, having covered nearly 30,000nm visiting 20 destinations and engaging with schools, charities and organisations as part of her mission to educate, empower and elevate girls, increasing their life and career choices and also raising money to fund girls’ educational projects around the world. The OGR will provide a great opportunity to amplify Maiden’s mission and the importance of educating all girls for better futures for all.

Maiden who is currently in Cape Town, SA, will sail back to the UK for final preparations for the September 2023 start, once again with a young female skipper and crew of up and coming sailors from around the world, who will no doubt inspire another generation of women and girls to follow their dreams.

With so many of the beautiful yachts from previous Whitbreads being rescued and restored, as has Maiden of course, it seems only fitting that they should be raced around the world again! Tracy Edwards MBE

In 1989, Tracy Edwards skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, becoming the first woman to receive the Yachtsman of the Year Trophy.

At 11am on September 2, 1989, Maiden approached the start line for the Whitbread Round the World Race. They set off among the 22-strong fleet to begin the first leg to Uruguay, ultimately placing 3rd in their class. Although the girls were disappointed, the yachting press was astonished by their accomplishment.

After a three-week stopover, Maiden embarked on the 7,300-mile marathon from Uruguay to Australia. They opted for a southern route and faced numerous challenges, including icebergs, freezing temperatures, frostbite, contaminated gas, and a nine-day satellite signal outage. During the journey, two sailors from competitor yacht Creightons Naturally fell overboard, with one, Anthony Phillips, unable to be revived. Doctor Claire Russell stayed on Maiden’s radio for two days, providing guidance on how to keep the other man, Bart van den Dwey, alive.

Despite the treacherous conditions, Maiden arrived in Perth, Australia, ten days ahead of its nearest competitor and earned the Beefeater Trophy. They then made a short 14-day journey to New Zealand, winning that leg and extending their overall lead to 28 hours. Maiden underwent repairs and maintenance in New Zealand before setting off on the next Southern Ocean leg, around Cape Horn to Uruguay. Although the leg was difficult, the team persevered and arrived in Uruguay, where their Godmother, The Duchess of York, welcomed them.

The leg to Ft Lauderdale in Florida was not without its challenges, with Maiden finishing in third place.

Maiden embarked on its final leg to Southampton, surviving a tornado and the last five days without food, and arrived home to a hero’s welcome. They secured 2nd place overall in their class, the best result for a British boat in 17 years, and remain unbeaten to this day.

Tracy and her team faced formidable obstacles, including opposition and sexism, but still managed to secure victory in two of the most grueling legs of the course, ultimately placing second overall. This achievement marked a turning point for the sailing community, creating new opportunities for female competitors.

In recognition of her remarkable accomplishments, Tracy was awarded an MBE and became the first woman to receive the prestigious ‘Yachtsman of the Year’ trophy.

Sailing is in Heather Thomas ‘ blood, coming from a long line of mariners. Growing up in Otley, West Yorkshire, the sea was not close by, so Heather began her journey, dinghy sailing at the local lake, Otley Sailing Club, encouraged by her father. The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation gave Heather her first taste of ocean sailing, with a bursary to compete in the Pacific Leg of the 15/16 Clipper Round the World Race. She has since worked in a variety of roles and vessels in the marine industry- from flotilla skipper to teaching young people in the Caribbean, delivering a yacht from the Galapagos to New Zealand, running flotilla holidays in the Ionian Islands and as Watch Leader for the Ocean Youth Trust North. Maiden has been a big inspiration to Heather throughout her sailing career, so to sail on her is a dream come true. Whilst on the Maiden programme she gained her RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (commercially endorsed) and loves inspiring young girls to dream big, a value that was instilled in her by her parents, who continue to be her biggest supporters.

Rachel Burgess is used to unexpected calls for help in the middle of the night, be it in the wilds of the Southern Ocean or as a vet of 12 years standing in remote locations. “It makes you appreciate the value of getting sleep when you can,” said Rachel. All the expertise of completing a Covid-interrupted Clipper Race Circumnavigation (2019-2022) as well as her long-standing involvement in veterinary practice in the UK as well as in Australia will be put to good use now that she is confirmed as being on board Maiden for the OGR. The 36 year old originally tried out in 2021 but simply wasn’t able to commit the time at that juncture. Now she can, and takes her place as Chief Mate, right-hand to skipper Heather. Rachel has a huge volume of experiences to call upon even though she did not get her first taste of sailing until she was 16 years old taking part in a Tall Ship expedition that went from Weymouth to Dublin via several other ports of call. She graduated from the University of Glasgow as a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in 2010. Rachel rekindled her passion for the open water when based in Newcastle on Australia’s eastern seaboard and has made a great fist of combining her working life with what she used to view as her hobby. Now she is committed full-time to Maiden for the OGR, looking forward to ‘the rawness of the ocean,’ although she does nurse a fear of ‘running out of Haribo.’ The huge swells of the Southern Ocean are nothing compared to that.

In 1979, the yacht now known as Maiden was originally designed by the accomplished boat designer Bruce Farr under the name DISQUE D’OR 3 for the Swiss Ocean Racing Club. The club sought a lightweight and easily maneuverable ocean racing yacht for extended passage races, including the 1981-82 Whitbread Round the World Race. Pierre Fehlmann, a well-known Swiss yachtsman who had also participated in the previous Whitbread Race, skippered the vessel. Maiden, then DISQUE D’OR 3, completed the race and secured 4th place overall in the 1981-82 Whitbread competition.

Tracy was compelled to sell Maiden at the end of the race.

In 2014, she received news that Maiden had been abandoned and was slowly deteriorating in the Seychelles. Determined to preserve this exceptional maritime treasure, she launched a fundraising campaign to acquire the vessel and bring her back to the UK. Three years later, in April 2017, Maiden was transported to Southampton and underwent a thorough renovation, giving rise to The Maiden Factor initiative.

History 1989-90

Crews 1989-90.

  • The competition was divided into four level rating divisions and the handicap structure was scrapped.
  • A cruising division was run for the first and only time.
  • Steinlager 2 won every leg in the maxi division and was the winner overall.
  • It was the last race in which Peter Blake took part. He had raced in the first five races.
  • Tracy Edwards and her crew became the first all-female team to compete in the race onboard Maiden, the former Disque D’Or II.
  • The Duchess of York, who was then the wife of HRH Prince Andrew, christened Maiden.
  • Maiden won two of the three Southern Ocean legs in Division D.
  • The British military combined to enter the maxi yacht British Satquote Defender. It was the last time the British services had an entry in the race. HRH Prince Philip christened the yacht at London’s Tower Bridge.
  • Fazisi became the first entry from the USSR. Her co-skipper was American Skip Novak who had sailed in three previous races.
  • Fazisi was flown to the UK in an Antonov 124, at the time, the world’s biggest transport aircraft.
  • Alexei Grischenko, the co-skipper of Fazisi committed suicide during the first stopover in Punta del Este, Uruguay.
  • Yanne Gustafsson, a crewmember from The Card, was killed in Punta del Este in a motorbike accident.
  • Tony Philips was lost from Creighton’s Naturally during Leg 2.
  • Charles Jourdan collided with a whale on Leg 3.
  • The Card lost her mizzenmast when it became entangled with a spectator boat at the start of Leg 4. She continued the leg as a sloop.
  • The United States (Ft Lauderdale) hosted the race for the first time.
  •  Two boats did not complete the course.
  • Three were dismasted.

Twenty-three boats met on the start line for the fifth Whitbread, 17 of which were maxis. Although the race still applied time allowances, four divisions separated the entries and the Whitbread Trophies were now for the first boat to finish in each class, rather than the overall winner on corrected time.

Two yachts dominated the race. Both had extremely experienced skippers with a record of previous Whitbread races behind them. Steinlager 2, skippered by Peter Blake and Fisher & Paykel was skippered by Grant Dalton, Blake’s watch leader from the previous race.

Steinlager 2’s speeds were awesome and, assisted by helpful winds, Blake’s crew soon set a new record covering 343 miles in 24 hours. Fisher & Paykel arrived in Punta del Este without their mizzenmast after a backstay fitting failed. The crew had salvaged the wreckage and sailed on without telling anyone.

Steinlager 2 won Leg 1 in Division A, beating Merit by 12 hours and Fisher & Paykel by 30. The leg duration, anticipated to be 30 days, turned out to be a whole week less. Rothmans arrived fourth with a cracked deck. As the only competitor in Division C, Equity & Law II won her division, and L’Esprit de Liberté won Division D.

Alexei Grischenko, co-skipper Fazisi went missing during the stopover in Punta del Este. He had committed suicide. Another crew death was caused by a motorcycle accident: the victim was Janne Gustafsson from The Card.

During the layover in Punta del Este, Rothmans skipper, Lawrie Smith two crew from NCB Ireland to bolster his team; the project manager of L’Esprit de Liberté ran off with £100,000 and the crew's passports; and the skipper of British Satquote Defender was sacked.

Within minutes of the start, the wind rose to 40 knots and the temperature dropped. As the fleet headed south on Great Circle route, Union Bank of Finland had two frightening broaches among ice, which caused her to sail more cautiously at night. The boats had radar, but not all icebergs were able to be located. The crews were nervous as they surfed at high speeds on the edge of control.

During a broach, one of the crew from The Card broke his arm in two places, while the bowman on Fortuna Extra Lights broke his collarbone when the spinnaker pole slammed him into the forestay.

On Creighton’s Naturally, during a violent broach Bart van den Dwey and Tony Phillips, were swept overboard. Both men were wearing lifejackets and equipped with flares and personal radio beacons, but the recovery still took more than 45 minutes. Van den Dwey was resuscitated, but Tony Phillips was buried at sea.

Spinnaker poles and booms, arms and legs, breakages were rife and it was only after the Kerguelen Islands that things began to quieten down, though not before Fortuna Extra Lights had created a new 24-hour record of 405 miles.

At the approach to the finish in Fremantle, only 22 nautical miles separated leading maxis, Steinlager 2, Rothmans, Merit and Fisher & Paykel. Steinlager 2 crossed the line first, 90 minutes in front. Rothmans and Merit staged a match-race for second place, Rothmans beating Merit by 28 seconds after 27 days of racing. A week later, Maiden crossed the line first in Division D, achieving the best result for a British boat in the Whitbread for 12 years.

For the second time, Christmas was spent at sea and the fleet ploughed straight back into gale force conditions and heavy seas.

Beyond the Tasman Sea, the winds calmed and the leaderboard offered a new scenario with every position report. With 245 miles to the finish, nine miles separated the first three boats. Steinlager 2 led Fisher & Paykel by four miles, with Rothmans third and Merit just 11 miles behind. Charles Jourdan collided with a whale, leaving a three-metre gash in the hull. It was above the waterline so the French crew patched it up and carried on. Union Bank of Finland dismasted and reached Auckland under jury rig.

On the final approach to Auckland, Grant Dalton turned off the navigation lights of Fisher & Paykel after she rounded the North Cape. Meanwhile, onboard Steinlager 2, Blake tuned into the local radio channel to get some idea of the conditions around Auckland, a move that prompted a change of sail that gave Steinlager 2 a smooth passage through a ferocious 40-knot squall. Fisher & Paykel was still flying her spinnaker and lost time as the crew reconfigured, allowing their rivals to stretch their lead to a mile. Steinlager 2 enjoyed a rapturous welcome as she crossed the line less than six minutes ahead of Fisher & Paykel to win her third straight leg in Division A. Three days later Maiden crossed the line to win her second leg in Division D. Around 14,000 people gathered on the dockside to welcome Maiden, even though it was 0100.

Concerns over the congestion in Auckland at the start were realised when The Card’s mizzenmast became entangled with the rigging of one of the thousands of spectator boats and snapped. The team continued to sail the leg as a sloop.

Rucanor Sport retired from the leg and returned to Auckland after she collided with a whale and damaged her rudder. On Maiden Mikaela von Kuskull was knocked unconscious by the boom then Michelle Paret was hurled into the wheel by a massive wave. Claire Russell, the doctor, strapped Paret into a bunk and kept her there for four days.

Steinlager 2 and Fisher & Paykel rounded Cape Horn just five miles apart. A few days later, off the coast of Argentina Martela OF capsized when her keel fell off. The crew was rescued unscathed from the upturned hull by Merit and Charles Jourdan. The boat was later salvaged.

Once more, Steinlager 2 tipped over the line first in Division A, this time by 21 minutes. The incapacity of Paret on Maiden cost the all-female crew the overall lead in Division D and by the time she arrived in Punta in third place, L’Esprit de Libertéhad posted a 17-hour advantage.

Leaving Punta del Este, Rothman’s took a more easterly course and led for much of the way to the Doldrums, but her lead evaporated when an unusual weather system gave boats to the west of Rothmans a surge of speed, Steinlager 2 and Fisher & Paykel included.

For the rest of the leg, it was a two-boat show with Steinlager 2 making it five Division A leg victories in five with a 34-minute win over Fisher & Paykel. A navigational error on Maiden saw her fall behind Rucanor Sport and L’Esprit de Liberté and she achieved a disappointing fourth place in Division D.

During the 30-day stopover a conference for competitors, designers, yachting officials, sponsors and journalists was held where discussions began on the feasibility and desire for a new class of racing yacht.

The final leg was only 12 hours old when Gatorade reported a broken spreader, which forced her into Jacksonville to make repairs. A few hours later, Rothmans headed Georgetown, calling on two Lear jets to fly in parts to fix a broken shroud.

On day four, a chain plate holding the main mast and mizzen shroud failed onboard Steinlager 2, forcing helmsman Brad Butterworth to crash gybe to save the rig. But skipper Peter Blake was determined to continue even though the mast was in danger of coming down and his crew spent all night working on a new fitting that would keep them going at full speed to the finish.

Maiden also ran into difficulty, colliding with a whale and then being spun 360 degrees by a waterspout, while the top part of Satquote British Defender’s mast fell off. For good measure, NCB Ireland broke a running backstay and the headboard car onboard Merit failed.

Four days from the finish, the crews from Steinlager 2 and Fisher & Paykel could see each other and just before Land’s End, the match racing between them began. Off the Lizard, they were within three boat lengths of each other, the lead held by Steinlager 2.

Fisher & Paykel arrived in Southampton 36 minutes behind Steinlager 2. Six wins in six legs gave Steinlager 2 the Division A Whitbread Trophy, Blake’s first win in five attempts on the race.

As Maiden neared land, she was constantly overflown. The culmination was a massive welcome, virtually national, at Southampton.

Peter Blake was awarded an OBE for his sailing endeavours and bowed out of the Whitbread Race. Tracy Edwards too was recognised with an MBE for her remarkable achievements in finishing second in Division D. Only two boats, Martela OF and Rucanor Sport failed to complete the course.

Man overboard mid-ocean: what really happens during a MOB rescue in the Volvo Ocean Race?

Helen Fretter

Alex Gough, who was swept overboard from Scallywag during Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race, describes his man overboard recovery, while Jack Bouttell of Dongfeng Race Team explains the MOB routines on a Volvo 65

On 14 January, some 2,000 miles from Hong Kong, 25-year-old Alex Gough was swept overboard from the Volvo 65 Sun Hung Kai Scallywag as they prepared for a sail change.

Gough, who admitted after his rescue that it had been a ‘pretty stupid’ error, was not wearing a lifejacket, harness line, or personal locator device, yet his crew was able to return and retrieve him onboard within seven minutes. We spoke to Gough in Hong Kong about the man overboard:

Volvo Ocean Race crews are equipped with a Spinlock Deckvest lifejacket that has been specifically re-designed for the event with extensive input from sailors. It has been modified for wearing for extended periods, such as when grinding on the pedestals.

The crews also each have a Spinlock ‘bum bag’ or waist harness, known as the personal equipment pack, which carries a second MOB 1, PLB1 and emergency strobe light. But the safety equipment is not compulsory during daylight and moderate conditions, with crews applying their own judgement on when to don lifejackets or waist packs. Like any safety equipment, it is basically useless unless worn – although the waist harness is also designed so that it may be thrown to an MOB, with the safety devices placed in Neoprene pockets for extra buoyancy.

Fortunately Gough went overboard in daylight, and the Scallywag crew was able to locate him quickly. Many race followers debated whether the Scallywag team kit – in predominately black and dark grey – might have exacerbated the difficulty in finding him in the water, although Gough doesn’t feel that a different colour top would have made a difference – pointing out that only his head was visible above the water. “I was wearing a hat,” he commented, “but it got ripped straight off.”

Many of the race teams do have high visibility outer layers, but in ‘t-shirt’ conditions would typically be wearing base layers in black, grey or white.

The processes for recovering an MOB from a Volvo 65 are markedly different to those on a normal cruising yacht or cruiser-racer. Before the start of the race Dongfeng Race Team shared footage of the team performing an MOB drill. Some viewers questioned why the team didn’t follow the same procedures that many sailors have been taught, such as pointing at the casualty, and why they instead deployed a swimmer.

In Alicante, Dongfeng bowman Jack Bouttell explained why some of their procedures are unique to the race:

There are several key reasons for not dedicating one crew member to point at the casualty. When sailing at the typical 20-knot speeds of the Volvo 65 any MOB is likely to be out of sight within a matter of seconds, especially when the boats are sailing in high spray conditions. In typical race mode there may also only be three or four crew members on deck, so all hands would be required to begin slowing the boat down.

If conditions allow, there is instead potential for the onboard reporter to launch the drone to provide an aerial view and help find or monitor the casualty.

In the dark, the crews would be reliant on the AIS device, although as Bouttell explains, the boats will normally make a dramatic bear away or similar course change which gives a good indication of the MOB’s position on the navigation software – assuming they are spotted going overboard immediately.

In Gough’s case, the Scallywag crew were preparing for a sail change so there was nearly a full team on deck. Gough was able to raise the alarm by shouting as he was washed overboard, and crew mate Annemieke Bes deployed high visibility safety gear such as the danbuoy from the back of the Volvo 65, which helped locate him.

The Scallywag team sailed back to Gough, then used the engine to slow the yacht down as they approached him. Gough was able to swim to the boat and climb back aboard.

Marie Riou practises the swimmer role during MOB training on Dongfeng before the race start

There is a different MOB drill to recover a crew who might be incapacitated. As Bouttell explained, on Dongfeng they have a dedicated swimmer on each watch who will get into the water to reach the casualty, and a lifting strop to retrieve them back on deck.

Despite Gough’s smooth recovery, a mid-ocean MOB remains every skipper’s worst nightmare. There have been five fatalities in the race’s history resulting from sailors washed overboard – most recently Dutch sailor Hans Horrevoets lost his life falling overboard from ABN Amro Two in 2006.

Successful mid-ocean rescues are also exceptionally rare. Joan Vila, navigator on Mapfre in this edition, recovered team mate Jordi Doménech from the ocean during the 1989 Whitbread Round the World Race, after Doménech had spent more than a quarter of an hour in the water in freezing temperatures. In the same race Bart van den Dwey and Tony Phillips were swept overboard from Creightons Naturally,  Van Den Dwey was recovered unconscious but alive, Philips found 15 minutes later, having died from cold.

As Scallywag skipper David Witt told his crew after Gough’s rescue: “In a few more knots wind, and black [night], you’re dead, ok? The only reason we found you is you put your arm in the air.”

Originally built as Ocean Greyhound, the first Ocean 80, by Southern Ocean Shipyard in Poole in 1979. She was sponsored by the Greyhound bus company and I recall the original idea was to set up a sponsored maxi circuit using the Ocean 80 which never materialised.

She's currently moored at Urqhart's Bay in Whangarei, New Zealand.

She had a major refit and is now called Camara. https://www.camarasailing.com/blog

Round the world skipper dies

  • April 7, 2011

John Chittenden's funeral held tomorrow

john chittenden

The funeral of the first man to win round-the-world races in both directions will be held tomorrow.

John Chittenden , 70, was found dead in woodland near Totnes on Sunday March 27.

In 1989 he skippered the 80-foot Creighton’s Naturally to victory in the cruiser class of the Whitbread round-the-world race in an easterly direction.

Then four years later he won Sir Chay Blyth’s inaugural British Steel Challenge in the other direction on board Nuclear Electric , which saw him named the 1993 YJA Yachtsman of the Year.

Mr Chittenden’s son Stephen desxcribed him as ‘a great man, a great sailor and wonderful father and grandfather’.

He said: ‘He genuinely had hundreds of close friends in the sailing world and beyond.’

Mr Chittenden grew up in Sussex and became a master mariner in his early twenties after skippering oil tankers from the age of 17.

In the late 1980s he was cruising secretary of the RYA.

His funeral will be at St. Saviour’s Church in Dartmouth at 1430.

TP52 as a cruiser....?

Well these guys think so... J-Bird III Restoration Blog – Part 1 - MySailing.com.au They bought the 1st ever TP52 for $30k AUS and have started a very extensive restoration program with the aim of turning her into a fast cruiser still capable of distance racing when the mood takes them. This will be an interesting project to watch I think!

I think it will be. Some people have questioned the $30k AUS buying price considering the likely cost of the project as a whole, but if the mast, boom, wheel, lead in keel are usable, that will be why they paid so much. Anyone with boats that have balsa core decks (Northshore built ?) should also look at some of the videos and be very, very afraid.

dom said: Wow, this will be interesting to see E.g. crew weight supplies much of the overall righting moment so these hulls tend to be beamy and twitchy. The rigs are for example designed to support big Code 0 type sails, which it's hard to see having any relevance on a lightly crewed boats. And in such lightweight boats, they can't add much in the fit out. Definitely better to watch than pay for! Personally, I am deeply skeptical. Click to expand...

Didn't some young lad solo round the world in one a few years back...... anything's possible!

flaming said: Worth saying that the 1st generation TP52s were very different boats to the current. TP stands for "trans pacific" because that was the original design intention... It was only later that they became the very grand prix level racers we know now. This boat is significantly narrower and more conservative than the current boats, being built primarily to go offshore. It has wheel steering as well, not a tiller on a 52 footer! Agree entirely that they won't add much to the fit out, but if you see their blog it doesn't look like they intend to. Code zero type sails though are very relevant to cruising. Especially ones that are on a furler. Click to expand...

Bobc

Weren't they originally designed for the offshore race from California to Hawaii? I reckon one of those could make a really good fast cruiser.

dom said: Good point re the older versions and wrt Code 0s on a crusing plataform, I personally love them. My concern here is just the sheer size of the 'normal' TP52 coloured sails in a cruising format. And if the seriously want to race also we're instantly in the $$$$s again!! Click to expand...

J-Bird III Restoration Series: Part 6 - Going topless! Replacing the whole deck, and decision made to go fully electric... This is a very, very interesting project.

Frogmogman said: I'm full of admiration for people who take on these sort of projects. Daunting to say the least. There's quite a nice youtube video about a couple who bought the old Whitbread maxi Ocean Greyhound/FCF Challenger/Creightons Naturally in an appalling state and converted it into a cruising yacht. For sure, if you have the time, the funds and the ability to realise such a project, it can be quite a good value way into a fast cruising boat. Click to expand...

I was very happy to see her being given a new life. I was briefly involved with the boat when I was a student and it belonged to Les Williams.

You can see the sandwich construction at 12min 15. I think the dodger is dodgy but after all that work they deserve to have just whatever they desire. : -) .

In the world of yacht brokerage, each journey is unique, and mine has been a captivating ride from roads to waters. I am Nate Evans, a seasoned entrepreneur with a background in the automotive service industry; I’m excited to share my story and why I chose to embark on the maritime adventure with Jeff Brown Yachts.

From Roads to Waters: The Evolution

Growing up on the water in Wilmington, North Carolina, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the maritime world. With over two decades of experience in the automotive service industry, I found myself yearning for a new challenge. The transition from car engines to marine engines was a natural evolution, guided by a genuine passion for the sea.

Discovering the Axopar Culture

The pivotal moment occurred at the 2020 International Boat Show in Dusseldorf, Germany. The Axopar culture instantly resonated with me, offering not just a boat but a lifestyle. Connecting with Jeff Brown and sharing our enthusiasm for nautical adventures, I knew I had found an amazing team with JBY, Axopar and Brabus Marine.

Client-Centric Approach: More Than Just Transactions

What sets the journey with Jeff Brown Yachts apart is the commitment to clients as individuals. Purchasing a yacht is more than a financial transaction; it’s a lifestyle choice. Understanding this, I take the time to delve into the unique boating desires of each client. The goal is not just to meet expectations but to exceed them through high ethical standards, hard work, and unwavering integrity.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
