Even the best thing in the world can be improved, at least in details. Taking advantage from our experience as well as listening to suggestions coming from our owners, captains and experts, we constantly and rigorously test every new Swan model, from launch through early life in order to improve our boats – keeping them updated in terms of technology, safety, comfort and changes in regulations. This passionate attention to improvement is one of the key reasons why Swan yachts are the most appreciated boats in the world. This process was obviously applied to our successful and beloved Swan 54.

The outstanding Swan 54 just got even better.

54' bluewater yacht

The architect

Germ á n frers.

This is the second generation of blue water cruising yachts, designed for Nautor. She has been refined in all departments and stands out in the crowd because of her design and the inherent quality of her construction. This is a sailing yacht, large enough for a group of six to cruise in comfort but small enough to be able to be sailed and maintained by her owners. This is the boat anybody like me, with a wealth of offshore racing experience and a taste for blue water cruising with family and friends, or young people looking to have the adventure of their lives, would dream to own and enjoy in all places of the world without limitations of any sort. She is graceful, elegant and nice looking, the freeboards and overhangs are well proportioned and will have timeless appeal.

Form and function are in complete harmony. Her hull lines are sweet and undistorted and she has an easy motion at sea, no pounding when powering upwind against a moderate chop. The prismatic coefficient was planned for above average all around speed over 8 knots. The waterplane area as a result of the relatively long waterline coupled with a high center of buoyancy contribute in great part to the form stability thus, the relatively low ballast to displacement ratio to enhance a good soft motion. Both appendage configurations will be moderately loaded while going upwind and never stall and there is plenty of steering control in all conditions. The deck is minimalistic in design and well married to the hull in appearance. Surfaces are clean and uncluttered facilitating sail handling and the movement of crew while sailing or at anchor. Her rig completes the equation, She will be a joy to sail.

54' bluewater yacht

The deck layout has been developed to meet two fundamental objectives: ensure com- fortable sailing with limited crew and provide areas designed to best enjoy life onboard. The transom opens fully into a wide swim platform allowing direct access to the sea. The positioning of the mainsheet on the coachroof, rather than in the cockpit, allows the use of the wide bimini while sailing. The bimini, together with the sprayhood which is recessed and retractable, provides complete protection from the elements. The four standard electric winches in the cockpit, close to the helmsman, facilitate easy sailing with limited crew. The generous stowage volumes, including the sail locker in the bow and full lazarette in the stern area, enable all equipment, such as a RIB (inflatable), fenders and sails to be safely stowed yet remain easily accessible.

MODEL YEAR 2019

For Model Year 2019 we are pleased to present you the latest features and improvements which have been implemented for deck gear, that is:

  • Swimming ladder integrated into the transom with a dedicated opening, well designed and functional for swimming
  • Engine throttle: new model, more premium feel and in line with the cruising purpose of the boat
  • Re-designed anchor locked with more space for optional additional chain and a proper top inspection suitable to wash the chain
  • New solution for chain access below deck, with preventer for water flow
  • Added stainless steel hand hold on the upper part of the pedestals

54' bluewater yacht

Similar to the deck layout, the interior has been designed to ensure maximum comfort for long periods, both under sail and at anchor. This original configuration offers three double cabins, with the owner’s cabin forward and two guest cabins, one central and the other aft. There is also a fourth cabin dedicated to systems and storage, including the generator and washing machine, with the possibility to add a work table so as to convert it into a crew cabin. A configuration perfectly suited for extended bluewater cruising and lengthy stays aboard. The saloon has a ‘c’ shaped sofa, which is three metres long, with a central table and two stylish chairs. While opposite, there is the chart table with a generous navigational station, with plenty of space for electronics. There is also the option of a foldaway table, al- lowing additional seating.

The galley, one of the largest in this class of yacht, is three metres long, offers generous counter and storage space, along with the possibility of three refrigerators. Located in the most stable part of the boat and close to the companionway, one can cook comfortably even while underway. The use of natural oak throughout, combined with the quality finish and materials Swan is known for, creates a bright and refined interior.

For Model Year 2019 we are pleased to present you the latest features and improvements which have been implemented for interior functionality, that is:

  • Aft guest cabin: floor in one level, without any step
  • Port guest cabin amidship: increased width of the bed (not for opt centerboard keel solution)
  • Enhanced access to engine with one single larger panel on port cabin
  • Less intrusive door handles to enhance the space in the passages
  • New Fusion stereo with remote bluetooth connection

54' bluewater yacht

Bluewater sailing is a concept that encompasses a world of open spaces, far horizons and long distance cruising: in this sense, the Swan 54 is a pure bluewater cruiser. She is conceived to be the perfect boat for extensive living on board, to enjoy the best cruising locations all over the World. The moderate displacement hull and high performance lead keel give the Swan 54 a particularly stable and smooth motion in a seaway. She is fast and powerful in every condition, giving a full sense of safety at the same time. In addition, the high aspect ratio of the rudder provides impressive control, increasing the pleasure of helming. The contained freeboard and deep V hull, ensures smooth sailing in rough conditions and enhance stability at anchor or when manouvering in windy conditions. Sailing on the Swan 54 is a pure joy: cockpit ergonomics and deck gear organization are designed to offer always the most comfortable and well protected position, allowing the helmsman to control every trim in complete autonomy. If your favourite cruising area has shallow waters, the Swan 54 is also available with variable draught (1.40 to 3.70 metres), with an efficient daggerboard and twin rudders. Beautiful, fast, comfortable, laden with clever features and details to enjoy the sea and the environment, she is a yacht for life, to love and to be proud of.

Swan 54 – an exciting new bluewater cruiser from Nautor

  • Toby Hodges
  • November 24, 2015

Toby Hodges is excited by the prospect of this new 54-footer from Nautor, the smallest cruising Swan in ten years

54' bluewater yacht

Nautor’s Swan has announced an exciting new model for 2016, its smallest cruising Swan in nearly ten years – since the Swan 46 and 53 in 2005, in fact. And rumour has it there might be something smaller and sportier to come – more on that next month.

This news comes at an unexpected time, with Swan in the midst of producing some of its largest yachts yet – four 115-footers are currently in build. Are we seeing the return to the mid-size fast cruiser shapes that forged the Finnish company’s long-standing reputation?

A bluewater cruiser from Swan is particularly exciting. The term may bandied about a bit these days, but there are certainly clues with this Swan 54 to suggest that Nautor is targeting an ocean cruising client base and not simply pushing another performance cruiser into an already crowded market.

Stowage on deck looks excellent and includes a cockpit locker, lazarette and that particularly valuable commodity for long-distance sailors, a sail locker. The cockpit locker is actually a utility cabin, which can house a generator and washing machine, or be used as a workshop or converted to a berth if desired.

Swan 54 sail copy

Down below there is a double cabin amidships and a U-shaped galley beside the companionway, a practical arrangement at sea. Tank volume is at the moderate rather than impressive end of the scale for this size yacht – 495lt of fuel and 684lt of water.

Just right for ocean sailing

German Frers has given the 54 a modest shape, which might look a little dated compared with some of her competition, but should suit ocean sailing. The raked stem, fin keel and sloping transom, for example, are features we might have seen in a Frers Swan from the 1980s, but their attributes are just as relevant today. The stem should help softly part waves, while the transom cleverly folds out to produce a 2.5m bathing platform – which will be appreciated in warm anchorages.

A vee-shaped hull below the waterline is a tried and tested design to ensure as comfortable a motion as possible to weather. Interestingly, Nautor’s Swan is providing the option for a shallow keel of just 1.4m combined with twin rudders.

Gone is the super lightweight carbon construction seen on recent Swans. The 54’s hull will be built in single-skin glassfibre reinforced with vinylester laminate.

Frers has given the 54 a generous sail plan, including a large foretriangle, but one that is promised to be easy to handle. The four winches on the coamings close to the aft helms are all powered, with clutches to enable multiple tasks. Jib tracks are mounted on the coachroof, promoting close pointing ability and clear side decks. The mainsheet is also mounted on the coachroof instead of in the cockpit, to create space for a sizeable bimini.

Swan 54 anchor copy

Swan says the interior will be both bright and refined, with plenty of natural light and a natural oak finish. The galley looks particularly generous in size, and provides the option of up to three fridges. Two of the double cabins are to port, and the owner’s cabin forward, linking to one of two heads.

The first 54 is scheduled to launch in July 2016 and has been sold to a British couple.

Specifications

The two architects behind this free-flowing, wonderfully nimble 54-footer are Roberto Biscontini and Lorzenzo Argento, whose creation paves the way for a new generation of high-end cruisers that optimize cockpit and interior layouts without any sacrifices to performance, practicality, or comfort. The yacht carries the unmistakable DNA of the Oceanis range , a delicate balance of form and function that make her as pretty as she is capable, and as focused as she is versatile, equally ready for a fast ocean passage or a leisurely double-handed sunset cruise. With an emphasis on build quality, high-end materials, and the innovative vision that has always been a staple of the BENETEAU brand, the Oceanis Yacht 54 truly represents the pinnacle of the modern monohull cruising design.

NAVAL ARCHITECT : Biscontini Yacht Design

INTERIOR & EXTERIOR DESIGN : Lorenzo Argento

EXTERIOR DESIGN

With a straight stem allowing for more interior volume in the bow, and a maximum beam (16.3 feet) carried further aft, the Oceanis Yacht 54 offers a state-of-the-art, perfectly-balanced hull that maximizes thrills in all conditions. Maneuverability on deck was given special attention, particularly around the cockpit, which modernizes the traditional center cockpit design into a flush layout with distinct areas dedicated to lounging and sailing. Aptly drawn coamings and high bulwarks provide increased safety while transitioning to the foredeck. The spacious swim platform provides access to the sea; when deployed, it reveals that the space below the cockpit stores an eight-foot inflatable tender. The Oceanis Yacht 54 is available with three different drafts: shoal, deep, and performance, which measure 6.4, 8.2 and 9.9 feet respectively.

54' bluewater yacht

Interior Design

Lorenzo Argento’s objective in designing the interior was to create a warm, modern atmosphere with as much natural light and ventilation as possible. The Oceanis Yacht 54’s layouts reflect a desire to meet the needs of modern-day owners, through well-engineered, versatile cabin arrangements that provide unrivaled levels of comfort and abundant storage space. Tables and seating areas have been reimagined for both leisure and practicality, as well as access to all major systems and components hides in plain sight. There are two versions available, a 3-cabin 2-head or a 3-cabin 3-head, and both can be built using light oak or walnut.

54' bluewater yacht

Exceptionally Detailed Craftsmanship

Every detail of the Oceanis Yacht 54 has been meticulously designed to become one with the crew and the sea.

She is, at a glance, unmistakably an Oceanis – the mainsail arch, the modern sheerline, the elegant proportions, those distinctive coamings and portholes – and honors her pedigree by continuing to offer the features that have made the range a standard-setter in the industry. A vast array of options, trim levels, rigging and keel setups, and mechanical components ensure she can be tailored to fit the needs of every sailor, and her stylish looks will turn heads in every harbor on every ocean.

54' bluewater yacht

Safe and Easy Sailing

The Oceanis Yacht 54 isn’t just modern on the outside; it is a yacht that is brimming with the latest and greatest sailing technologies intuitively built into her systems, designed to make the cruising experience as easy and as enjoyable as possible. Ship Control, an interface that allows access to boat data and components, is installed as standard. Also available as an option, Dock&Go greatly facilitates engine-powered maneuvering in tight spaces by combining a 360 degree rotating pod with a retractable bowthruster. Under sail, the optional Harken AST (assisted sail trim) automatically trims the sails based on apparent wind, all controlled by a simple display in the cockpit. Shorthanding a 54-footer has never been easier.

Great Ease of Movement

The flush cockpit allows for seamless movement between the companionway and the helm stations. The flow to the aft swim platform and down the gangways to the foredeck is remarkably natural, and the positioning of lines, winches, and controls allows for near-effortless sailing. Sightlines from the helm forward are excellent. The cockpit seats feel comfortable yet snug, though the foredeck sunpad is likely to be the most popular spot on the boat.

Exclusive Trim and Materials

A close inspection of the Oceanis Yacht 54’s engineering and build quality reveals a craft that is decidedly a cut above the rest. Every single aspect of the boat has been carefully planned and nothing has been taken for granted - from the high-quality door fixtures and upholstery, to the exquisite molded woods of the interior, to the aluminum sub-floor that increases rigidity yet saves weight. The owner will be able to choose between two cabin layouts (both with two wood options available) and a palette of upholstery and paneling choices, not to mention the electronic, mechanical, and rigging options. Whatever the choice, on such a beautifully-executed boat, the owner is bound to be one with the boat, and one with the sea.

Viking Tradition The Viking 54 sets new milestones of innovation while integrating ideas garnered from sales and owner feedback, as well as thousands of hours logged by our Viking demo teams on the tournament trail. “We’re in a constant state of refinement,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “Everything from interior and exterior design and accommodations to performance, fishability and ease of operation are evolving.”

The 54 presents an eye-pleasing profile that’s unmistakably Viking, with signature design traits such as a gently sloping unbroken S-shaped sheer, aggressively raked stem, double chines, hull-side vents and deftly placed exterior feature lines.

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, the Viking Design and Engineering Department has optimized the 54’s running surface for maximum performance. Now an integral part of the design process, our in-house CFD allows us to run numerous virtual sea trials to fine-tune the shape of the hull bottom for increased efficiency. The hull is built with an engineered composite of fiberglass fabrics and coring that’s vacuum-infused with vinylester resin.

Business End The Viking 54’s business end offers more space than any other boat in its class. The 154-square-foot unobstructed cockpit comes to the fishing wars with the ammunition to put you in the winner’s circle, starting with molded non-skid on the cockpit sole for grippy footing (even when wet) and large scuppers to drain water quickly.

A walk-through transom door with a lift gate takes the work out of boating a trophy catch. And when you’re release-fishing, a three-foot reach to the waterline means you can quickly turn a billfish loose. Anglers will appreciate Viking’s signature rounded cockpit coamings and toekick for those lengthy stand-up battles. Flush rod holders, recessed stainless-steel hawse pipes and cleats keep the cockpit clear.

Multiple insulated fishboxes of various capacities increase flexibility. The raised transom box can be used as a live well, fishbox or general storage. A full-length in-deck fishbox spans the starboard side, while the port side holds two storage compartments with the forward serving as an optional live well. A mounting plate laminated into the sole will anchor the mightiest of fighting chairs, and you can also opt for a rocket launcher or table. A single centerline lazarette hatch (available with power actuation) opens nearly 90 degrees for full viewability and access to the available Seakeeper as well as the steering, trim tabs and drain pumps.

Guests will be enamored with the raised observation mezzanine (pioneered by Viking) as they watch the action in comfort, shaded by the flybridge overhang. Smart storage solutions abound, with freezer and cooler space under the mezzanine for baits and drinks and a tackle cabinet on the starboard side. The inboard portion of the mezzanine provides access to the engineroom. An anodized aluminum ladder with nonslip treads (and a handrail at the top) provides secure egress to the flybridge.

View from Above A streamlined walk-around center console provides 360-degree sightlines. Touchscreen electronics displays and a row of Bocatech switches with power status LED rings are flush mounted in the helm dash. Their installation and positioning heighten viewability and ease of access.

A stainless steel steering wheel and single-lever electronic controls are mounted on a raised teak helm pod. Optimus Electronic Power Steering delivers precise maneuverability and finger-tip control. The console itself is designed with toekick all around for better balance and increased walking area. The helm and companion chair (with teak ladder backs) supply ample comfort for those long rides to the canyons, and guests can take it easy in the port or starboard lounges (with forward-facing backrests) or forward console seat.

The Viking 54 can be outfitted with a custom designed and fabricated Palm Beach Towers tuna tower and equipped with navigation, communication and entertainment systems from Atlantic Marine Electronics. These two Viking subsidiaries play critical roles in making our yachts turnkey ready.

Interior Delights Making full use of the 17’8” beam, the Viking 54 layout accentuates the impressive size of her interior. The key to the configuration is the uninterrupted companionway that stretches from the starboard-side salon door all the way to the forepeak. The lounge area and galley are to port, while the dinette is to starboard.

High-gloss teak or walnut is offered for the 54’s interior, and a satin finish is optional. Premium wall-to-wall carpeting and furnishings can be found throughout the climate-controlled living area. Air conditioning flows quietly from valances for comfortable cooling and thorough distribution. A hi-lo mappa burl cocktail table joins the L-shaped lounge with storage below.

A 49” HD TV is nested on the forward starboard bulkhead above the dinette, which is appointed with a high-gloss mappa burl table and wraparound seating for four. The galley’s peninsula countertop features engineered stone with an overhang and two convenient bar stools. The galley is feature-packed with a pair of under-counter Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer units and storage under the peninsula counter. The opposite counter is home to a stainless steel sink with garbage disposal and an electric cooktop.

Comfort Zones The three-stateroom two-head layout includes a master suite to port with a walk-around queen berth sided by night stands and a credenza to port. There’s a large maple-lined storage area beneath the mattress, accessed via a gas piston-assisted lift-up top, and two drawers are integrated into the foot of the bed. A 32-inch HD TV is mounted above a second credenza. A generously proportioned maple-lined hanging locker accommodates a sizeable wardrobe.

The forward stateroom comes standard with a queen berth, but also is available with a crossover berth arrangement. Both plans offer plenty of storage along with a 32” HD TV. The starboard stateroom has upper and lower berths along with a hanging locker and storage under the lower berth. Each stateroom is fully carpeted, with dedicated temperature and stereo controls, speakers and overhead LED lighting.

The heads feature custom Amtico flooring, a lower vanity, a medicine cabinet with mirrored doors, exhaust fans, air conditioning and electric heads with holding tank and overboard discharge capabilities. Both also boast very large walk-in one-piece fiberglass showers with an expansive glass enclosure and door. Below the detachable shower head, you’ll find a convenient storage cabinet as well as an integrated fiberglass seat.

Engineering Driven The optional MAN V12 1550CRM (1550 MHP) diesels power hull No. 1. With this propulsion package, the Viking 54 Convertible will have an estimated cruise speed in the mid-30-knot range with a top end of 40-plus knots depending upon load, sea state and boat condition. A pair of MAN V12 1400CRM (1440 MHP) diesels are standard. All mechanicals and equipment are installed with great attention to detail in an immaculate engineroom painted with Snow White Awlgrip for visibility and ease of maintenance.
