Interesting to see this yacht is now for sale in Oz. After heaps of hype and build-up now we hear almost nothing about StompCraft. What the latest on these guys? Anybody? How many Stomp38s were sold? Here's the listing in Boatpoint: STOMP38

Not interested in owning one of these or anything that size. Just wanted to know what was happening with Stompcraft overall and how that model was doing in races. Why was Steve Thompson given the boot? Didn't hear that one.

Eventually

It just won it's division in Winter Series...has been very well sailed in Winter Series last 2 years and scored. Still won't rate against boats her own size unless it's blowing from behind for an entire race. Still an unknown quantity in hard uphill...it hasn't been tested often that way and the few times offshore haven't gone very well. bloody big kites.

He was bought out and no longer has any dealings with Stomp or the Corsair guys, all the Vietnam stuff from Thompson is via another yard. If you read in SBA you'll read countless stories on people believing that he in one way or another stiffed them or didn't deliver; almost everyone does universally agree he designs great boats though He definitely is not part of the Stomp operation now other than presumably royalties as the designer. The design is not optimised for IRC, and the last time i spoke to the Corsair guys, I think they were considering changing it slightly to improve the rating without affecting performance too much; the long prod and possibly some change to the ballast and keel might be things that could help. You know my boat (just 6.5m long) used to rate 1.152 under IRC, that's how much the rule hammers long prods and light displacement. So by fiddling around a bit I suspect they think the Stomp could be improved; however I don't think they intended to use Thompson for that. You guys in Singapore would have thought that the Stomp would be great for this sort of area; mix of distance, round the cans, big enough to do the glamour races (just) - although as a big boat owner would you really want something this size in the same division? Maybe that is the sticking point...because if this sort of boat ends up with Mumms and the like, then spending just a little more an owner ends up in the glamour division (although with the resultant costs and crew numbers etc too). The T30 hasn't really taken off yet either - lovely boat too. I suspect Thompson has not done himself too many favours creating boats of similar length again and again rather than just pushing a few designs to be successful (T7 has reached critical mass though). For instance, there are now 3 different T650/T680/Longztse projects going on at once for mass production plus you can also purchase the plans to build yourself, and each one is slightly different so they cannot all race eachother!? Slow upwind - goes sideways a lot, especially when the breeze kicks in. Not sure if that was the boat or the crew, however. Large sail area and not much ballast, we carry the same upwind sail area with 400kg more lead, and we're not a heavy boat. Stomp has always surprised me downwind - never been as fast as it looks, again could be an operator issue...that prodder is wicked. Click to expand...

TITANIUM MAKES HISTORY

Chris Skinner became the first person to win back-toback handicap honours when he and co-skipper Shane Bellingham won the SSANZ Round New Zealand Twohanded Race.

The pair circumnavigated the country on their Thompson 38 Titanium, taking 13 days and 22 hours to complete the four legs. They took line honours in the second and fourth legs, fighting off Damon Joliffe and Josh Tucker in Motorboat II (Elliott 10.5) who won both line and handicap in legs 1 and 3.

Titanium took control of the race on the second and longest leg from Mangonui to Stewart Island (930 nm), winning by a comfortable 22 hours on handicap. They finished 11 hours ahead of Motorboat II overall on corrected time after the final leg.

Skinner competed in the 2012 edition of the round New Zealand race on Truxton (Tiller 10.5), winning legs 2 and 4. For full results visit www.ssanz.co.nz/results/

About Cruisers Yachts

vintage cruisers boat and logo

In the case of our yachts and your journeys, you're buying a company culture that has uncompromising love of yachts and the people that own them. Welcome to Cruisers Yachts.

1978 Model 288 Villa Vee

The Beginning

In 1904, Thompson Bros. Boat Manufacturing Co. made its first home in the small, northern town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin starting the legacy of a family boat-building business.  Always thinking big in terms of the craft and durability they brought to the boat industry, the second generation of Thompson's started building wood lapstrake outboard cabin cruisers in Oconto, Wisconsin in the early 1950s.

The first known Cruisers, Inc. catalog debuted in 1956. Prior to that, the company was building 14' and 16' boats under the Thompson Bros. label.  In 1965 wood boats were replaced with fiberglass as the new technology was wreaking havoc with the wood boat business.

2013 Model 48 Cantius

Becoming Cruisers Yachts

Cruisers, Inc. was sold to Mirro Aluminum Company of Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1971. It wasn't until 1979, when Roy Thompson retired, that someone other than a Thompson ran the company.

In 1980 the fiberglass product line of Mirro Marine Division (Cruisers) was sold to T.J. Bogard (the former President of Mirro Marine Division) and T.A. Lisle (formerly of Eaton Corporation).

In the early 1990s K.C. Stock, who was born and raised in the Oconto area, saw the potential for opportunity. In 1993, Stock's KC International Inc. purchased the company and changed the name to Cruisers Yachts.

2018 Model 48 Cantius

Developing Our Modern Yacht Lineup

In 2011 the Cantius series was born with the launch of the 48 Cantius. Then in In 2015, Cruisers Yachts unveiled its largest yacht by introducing the 60 Cantius. That following year, they introduced the 60 Fly, 54 Cantius, and 54.

Since then, we've continued to add new models with new innovation each year. The 46 Cantius launched in 2018 as well as the Mercury outboard on the 338. The 38 GLS debuted in 2019, the 42 GLS debuted in 2020, the 34 GLS in 2021 and the the 50 GLS in 2022.

In 2021, due to demand, Cruisers Yachts announced the expansion of their production capacity by purchasing a 216,000 square foot, purpose-built boat manufacturing plant in Pulaski, WI. Such expansion allows Cruisers to more than double its capacity over time. In the same year, MarineMax’s acquisition of Cruisers Yachts ensures it will always have a premium, American built yacht in its product portfolio.

Compass 38 is a 38 ′ 0 ″ / 11.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Claude Allen Smith and built by Compass Yachts Ltd. between 1970 and 1979.

Drawing of Compass 38

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with small boat crossings.

The man, who claimed to be an Iraqi national, was arrested on suspicion of facilitating illegal immigration to the UK early on Sunday.

He was arrested in Preston as part of an ongoing NCA investigation into two small boat crossings from France in November and December 2023.

Investigators believe the man was involved in facilitating migrants travelling from Turkey to the UK and advertised smuggling services on social media.

The NCA seized phones and documents during a raid of his address.

NCA senior investigating officer Al Mullen commented: "Today's arrest marks a significant point in an international investigation into organised immigration crime.

"Tackling this threat is a priority for the NCA, we have seen only in recent weeks how dangerous these crossings are."

Vigil held for siblings killed in Monroe Co. boat club crash

thompson 38 yacht

Berlin Township — Just six days after a car plowed into a boat club in Monroe County, killing two children and injuring 13 others attending a birthday party in the club, a vigil was held to bring the community together and encourage healing.

Dozens huddled Friday evening in the parking lot outside the Swan Boat Club on Brancheau Street. As the crowd held candles, some speakers prayed and others read scriptures, standing on a makeshift stage attached to a pick-up truck. The vigil ended with attendees singing "Amazing Grace."

The club is located about 200 yards from the home of a woman accused of driving under the influence and plowing her vehicle in the club's wall as the party was happening.

Two siblings — Alanah Phillips, 8, and Zayn Phillips, 4, of Flat Rock — were killed in the crash. At least 13 others were injured, including the Phillipses' older brother, J.P., and their mother, Mariah Dodds.

"It's hard to really put in perspective how to feel," said Michael Hatfield, the siblings' uncle. "Right now, it's an empty feeling."

Hatfield was one of several family members who attended the vigil, including Kathy Phillips, the siblings' grandmother, and Nicholas Phillips, another uncle.

Several supporters braved the chilling temperatures, with tear-stained faces, holding candles and embracing one another.

Hatfield said he and his relatives were "thinking we were celebrating life" on April 20, the day of the crash, and "we're celebrating a different kind of life."

Prosecutors have charged Marshella Chidester, 66, the boat club's former commodore, with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing death and four counts of operating under the influence of alcohol causing serious injury. She was released on a $1.5 million bond on Thursday and is prohibited from driving or drinking while out on bond.

Hatfield said he and his five siblings felt that Chidester, who lives just a tenth of a mile from the boat club, should not be at home "enjoying her freedom, while we're about to start planning funerals," he said, adding that his hope is that justice is served for his niece and nephew.

Nicholas Phillips, Alanah and Zayn's uncle, encouraged the community to "stand strong" and "come together to show what this woman has done is not right."

"One glass of wine does not do that to you," Phillips said with tears in his eyes. "... The things this (incident) is putting our family through — most of us can't sleep at night, most of us still haven't eaten. How is that fair?" Phillips said.

Speaking at the vigil, state Rep. Jamie Thompson shared her own experience with tragedy, the loss of her 24-year-old daughter who was killed in a motorcycle accident three years ago.

"I got the knock on the door at 7 a.m. that she was gone," Thompson said. "... Everyone's loss is different, but I feel that the pain I wish could tell you that I don't know what it feels like."

Thompson urged those grieving to release their hate toward those responsible for their loved one's loss.

"The hate that you feel will suffocate you ... You have to release that pain and give it to God, and you, as a community, do not forget this family," Thompson said.

Aside from the vigil, the boat club also plans to hold a spaghetti fundraiser on May 19 for the victims of the crash, along with first responders.

The boat club, meanwhile, remains closed.

7 Steps to a Successful Personal Statement for Graduate Entry Medicine

Share with a friend!

Back when I was applying to med school, I wrote a personal statement that got me into Graduate Entry Medicine – I also got invites to interviews at all 3 places I applied to for GEM. Perhaps you, like me back then, are facing writing a personal statement with little to no support.

One thing we have as graduates is previous experience writing at least one successful personal statement! However, Medicine, and especially Graduate Entry Medicine, is extremely competitive and so understandably you are looking for some specific help.

In this blog post I share the 7 steps I went through to write my personal statement. If you’d like to read my successful personal statement, just click here !

First things first – make sure to write and save your personal statement in Microsoft Word or an equivalent programme. You’ll copy it across to the UCAS form only once it’s near 100% polished in step 7.

Once you have a clear structure in mind for your personal statement, the rest will feel easier. Now, you don’t need to structure it exactly like I did. But the below will give you an idea of what you could do – I wrote 6 paragraphs and used the following structure (each box represents a paragraph):

2. Brainstorm

If you want to write a killer personal statement, it all starts here. Invest a sizeable amount of time into this brainstorming stage.

Jot down some ideas about what you could mention in your PS. Use the following as prompts:

  • Academic work or achievements that will demonstrate an enthusiasm for science and learning. Also, that you possess intellectual curiosity e.g. a dissertation, essay, group project
  • Medicine-related books you’ve read that are thought provoking or inspiring e.g. This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay
  • Medicine-related talks you’ve attended or watched online that you have found thought provoking or inspiring e.g. TED Talks
  • Moments during work experiences & volunteering that have shown you the qualities doctors need and the realities of working in healthcare. Recall the details of any moments that have particularly inspired you to pursue this career or helped you to realise you are a good fit for it. Look at your work experience / volunteering journal for inspiration, if you kept one.
  • Extra-curricular activities or positions of responsibility that demonstrate you possess qualities doctors need (such as teamwork, empathy and time management) e.g. captain of a sports team, member of a sports team, being in an orchestra or choir, being on the committee of a society, leading a campaign, fundraising, part-time jobs, other hobbies and interests

Struggling to find work experience? Check out my blog post How to Get Medical Work Experience in the COVID-19 Pandemic .

3. First draft

Allow your very first draft to be messy, imperfect and (feel) downright rubbish. Even professional writers write rubbish first drafts so don’t worry about it. The important thing is to get the first draft DONE.

UCAS gives you a maximum of 4,000 characters including spaces or 47 lines. When you first write your PS, it’ll likely shoot way over this. But don’t fret. You’ll remedy this in steps 4-6.

You also want to make sure you’re writing your PS in the right style…

Writing style tips:

  • Write in the first person (“I”).
  • Clear, straightforward language.
  • Avoid colloquial language.
  • Concise phrasing; avoid super long sentences.
  • Use active wording e.g. “I organised”, “I completed”.
  • Give specific examples with some detail and say how they have impacted you e.g. instead of “I organised work experience at my local hospital and it was very insightful because I learnt that doctors must be patient and kind” say something more like “I organised work experience at my local hospital and sat in on the consultations of an ophthalmologist. I observed the doctor was patient and warm with all their patients despite the time pressures they were under and this impressed upon me the empathy and patience required to be a doctor.”

At this point you may want to go grab a cup of tea, watch a movie or just sleep on it. Well done on getting this far!

Now, to turn your rubbishy first draft into a golden personal statement the next 4 steps will be absolutely key.

“The writer who breeds more words than he needs, is making a chore for the reader who reads.” ― Dr. Seuss

The ultimate goal with editing is to create a personal statement that is both concise and flows well when being read. Read back through your personal statement and rephrase sentences, delete sections that are unnecessary, add in bits you feel could add more to your statement and double check spelling and grammar (ensure it’s set to British English if you’re a UK applicant!)

Something I always do when editing any piece of writing is to READ IT OUT LOUD. I find I can miss subtle mistakes if I don’t do this plus it’s great for checking the flow of your writing.

Some say it’s helpful to print your statement before proofreading it also.

Remember, don’t just list what you’ve done . It’s crucial that you give specific examples, provide some detail and describe what you have learnt from your experiences & achievements.

5. Get feedback

Some websites encourage you to ask your friends and family to give you feedback on your personal statement. I don’t believe this is unhelpful . But I do believe it’s more helpful to ask those who have experience writing, or helping people to write, successful Medicine personal statements – there isn’t always an overlap.

If your old school has a track record of getting their pupils into Medicine, you could ask them for feedback. Some schools will be willing to help you even if you left quite a while ago!

You could also ask a member of staff at the university you are currently at or recently left who has experience helping students get into Medicine.

Perhaps you have some friends who are medical students or doctors – ask them too.

I asked a medical student who I had met coincidentally in my career before studying Medicine. Also, a member of university staff where I was doing my MSc at the time; they were super keen to get more students into Medicine from their department. This member of staff then put me in touch with a graduate who had recently got into Medicine from the same uni. This grad medical student kindly became my third pair of eyes!

Some of you may feel like there’s no one you can ask for quality feedback. Thankfully, there are people out there who are happy to critique your personal statement for FREE. Read my blog post Master List of FREE Medicine Personal Statement Reviewers .

This stage isn’t easy and may involve a lot of head scratching. You may go through several further drafts and that’s okay. You could even start all over again and write a whole new PS.

Either way, your goal is to refine your personal statement and produce its final form.

Consider the feedback given to you by the people you asked to review your PS. If you got feedback from multiple people, prioritise the feedback from those who have success writing, or helping people to write, successful Medicine personal statements.

You don’t have to create the best personal statement that ever existed. But to help ensure success, give it a good go!

Check out my Ultimate Medicine Personal Statement Checklist  (free download) to help you ensure you’ve done all you can to make your PS excellent.

7. Finalise (check formatting, spelling & grammar)

Is your PS 4,000 characters or 47 lines or less?

Does your PS make sense and flow well for a reader despite the inevitable deletions and multiple rephrasings you’ve done during editing?

Have you done steps 1-6 of this blog post?

You may be ready to submit!

Time to run a final spelling and grammar check using Microsoft Word or equivalent. The UCAS form doesn’t allow you to do this so make sure to do it before copying it into UCAS.

Alrighty. Copy and paste it into the UCAS form. I personally found I had to make further edits to make it work in UCAS. Maybe you’ll be luckier. Either way, once you’re satisfied, submit it to UCAS and you’re done!

The personal statement is an important requirement for residency and fellowship applications that many applicants find daunting. Beyond the cognitive challenge of writing an essay, time limitations for busy senior residents on clinical rotations present added pressure. Objective measures such as scores and evaluations paint only a partial picture of clinical and academic performance, leaving gaps in a candidate's full portrait. 1 , 2 Applicants, seemingly similar on paper, may have striking differences in experiences and distances traveled that would not be captured without a personal narrative. 2 , 3 We recommend, therefore, reframing personal statements as the way to best highlight applicants' greatest strengths and accomplishments. A well-written personal statement may be the tipping point for a residency or fellowship interview invitation, 4 , 5 which is particularly important given the heightened competition for slots due to increased participation on virtual platforms. Data show that 74% to 78% of residency programs use personal statements in their interview selection process, and 48% to 54% use them in the final rank. 6 , 7 With our combined 50 years of experience as clerkship and residency program directors (PDs) we value the personal statement and strongly encourage our trainees to seize the opportunity to feature themselves in their words.

Our residency and medical school leadership roles position us to edit and review numerous resident and student personal statements annually. This collective experience has helped us identify patterns of struggle for trainees: trouble starting, difficulty organizing a cogent narrative, losing the “personal” in the statement, and failing to display unique or notable attributes. While a bland personal statement may not hurt an applicant, it is a missed opportunity. 4 , 8 We also have distinguished helpful personal statement elements that allow PDs to establish candidates' “fit” with their desired residency or fellowship. A recent study supports that PDs find unique applicant information from personal statements helpful to determine fit. 4 Personal statement information also helps programs curate individualized interview days (eg, pair interviewers, guide conversations, highlight desirable curricula). Through our work with learners, we developed the structured approach presented here ( Figure 1 ). Applicants can use our approach to minimize typical struggles and efficiently craft personal statements that help them stand out. Busy residents, particularly, have minimal time to complete fellowship applications. We acknowledge there is no gold standard or objective measures for effective personal statement preparation. 9 Our approach, however, combined with a practical tool ( Figure 2 ), has streamlined the process for many of our mentees. Moreover, faculty advisors and program leaders, already challenged by time constraints, can use this tool to enhance their coaching and save time, effort, and cognitive energy.

Ten Steps for Writing an Exceptional Personal Statement: Digital Tool

Note: Use the QR code to download the digital tool and follow the 10 steps highlighted in Figure 1.

Given word count and space limitations, deciding what to include in a personal statement can be challenging. An initial brainstorm helps applicants recall personal attributes and experiences that best underscore key strengths (Step 1). 10 Writing explicit self-affirmations is challenging, so we recommend pairing with a near peer who may offer insight. Useful prompts include:

  • ▪ What 3 words best encapsulate me?
  • ▪ What accomplishments make me proud?
  • ▪ What should every program know about me?

Reflecting on these questions (Step 2) helps elucidate the foundations of the narrative, 10 including strengths, accomplishments, and unique elements to be included. Additionally, the preparation steps help uncover the “thread” that connects the story sequentially. While not all agree that personal or patient stories are necessary, they are commonly included. 5 One genre analysis showed that 97% of applicants to residency programs in internal medicine, family medicine, and surgery used an opening that included either a personal narrative (66%) and/or a decision to enter medicine (54%) or the specialty of choice (72%). 9 Radiology PDs ranked personal attributes as the second most important component in personal statements behind choice of specialty. 9 Further, a descriptive study of anesthesia applicants' personal statements ranked those that included elements such as discussion of a family's or friend's illness or a patient case as more original. 3 We feel that personal and patient stories often provide an interesting hook to engage readers, as well as a mechanism to highlight (1) personal characteristics, (2) journey to and/or enthusiasm for desired discipline, and (3) professional growth, all without giving the impression of being boastful. Sketching these Step 2 fundamentals prepares applicants to begin writing with intention.

Writing and Structuring

Once key elements are identified, the next steps assist with the actual writing. Utilizing information gleaned from the “Preparing” steps, start with a freewriting exercise (Step 3), an unrestricted association of ideas aimed at answering, “What experiences have cultivated my strong interest in pursuing [______]?” At this stage, ignore spelling and grammar. Just write, even if the product is the roughest, rough draft imaginable. 10 Setting a timer for 10 to 15 minutes establishes a less intimidating window to start. Freewriting generates the essential initial content that typically will require multiple revisions. 10

Next, we recommend structuring the freewriting content into suggested paragraphs (Step 4), using the following framework to configure the first draft:

  • ▪ Introductory paragraph: A compelling story, experience, or something that introduces the applicant and makes the reader want to know more (the hook). If related to a patient or other person, it should underscore the writer's qualities.
  • ▪ Paragraph 2: Essential details that a program must know about the applicant and their proudest accomplishments.
  • ▪ Paragraph(s) 3-4: Specific strengths related to the specialty of choice and leadership experiences.
  • ▪ Closing paragraph: What the applicant values in a training program and what they believe they can contribute.

Evaluate what has been written and ensure that, after the engaging hook, the body incorporates the best pieces identified during the preparation steps (Step 5). A final paragraph affords ample space for a solid conclusion to the thread. Occasionally the narrative flows better with separate strengths and leadership paragraphs for a total of 5, but we strongly recommend the final statement not exceed 1 single-spaced page to reduce cognitive load on the reader.

This part of the process involves revising the piece into a final polished personal statement. Before an early draft is shared with others, it should be evaluated for several important factors by returning to the initial questions and then asking (Step 6):

“Does this personal statement…”

  • Amplify my strengths, highlight my proudest accomplishments, and emphasize what a program must know about me?
  • Have a logical flow?
  • Accurately attribute content and avoid plagiarism?
  • Use proper grammar and avoid slang or profanity?

While not as challenging as the other steps, optimization takes time. 10 At this stage, “resting” the draft for 1 week minimum (Step 7) puts a helpful distance between the writer and their work before returning, reading, and editing. 10 Writers can edit their own work to a point, but they often benefit by enlisting a trusted peer or advisor for critiques. Hearing their draft read aloud by a peer or advisor allows the applicant to evaluate the work from another perspective while noting how well it meets the criteria from the tool (provided as online supplementary data).

A virtual or in-person meeting between applicant and mentor ultimately saves time and advances the writer to a final product more quickly than an email exchange. Sending the personal statement in advance helps facilitate the meeting. Invite the advisor to candidly comment on the tool's criteria to yield the most useful feedback (Step 8). When done effectively, edits can be made in real time with the mentor's input.

We bring closure to the process by focusing on spelling and grammar checks (Step 9). Clarity, conciseness, and the use of proper English were rated as extremely important by PDs. 3 , 9 Grammatical errors distract readers, highlight inattention to detail, and detract from the personal statement. 3 , 9 Once more, we recommend resting the draft before calling it final (Step 10). If the piece required starting over or significant rewriting based on feedback received, we also suggest seeking additional feedback on this draft, ideally from someone in the desired residency or fellowship discipline. If only minor edits (eg, flow, language) were incorporated, the personal statement can be considered complete at this time.

Writing a personal statement represents a unique opportunity for residency and fellowship applicants to amplify their ERAS application beyond the confines of its objective components. 3 Using this stepwise approach encourages each personal statement to be truly personal and streamlines the process for applicants and reviewers alike. All stakeholders benefit: applicants, regardless of their scores and academic metrics, can arm themselves with powerful means for self-advocacy; PDs gain a clearer idea of individual applicants, allowing them to augment the selection process and curate the individual interview day; and faculty mentors can offer concrete direction to every mentee seeking their help.

Our Admissions Process

At St George’s, we strive to ensure our admissions process is fair and transparent. In order to make sure every applicant is treated equally, we use a process based on objective measures. For example, while we take the time to read your personal statement, it is not formally assessed, or used to determine whether you will be invited for a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) .

The steps below outline our general admissions process and the way by which we determine which applicants will receive an offer to study Medicine MBBS (graduate entry) at St George’s.

  • Each applicant that meets our entry criteria (see below) is ranked by their GAMSAT score.
  • The number of interviews we run each year may vary. In previous years, we have interviewed approximately 250-350 applicants.
  • Our GAMSAT cut-off scores are determined by the number of available interviews. Interview places will be allocated to applicants who have the highest GAMSAT score, until all of our available interview places are filled.
  • If, as a result of the number of MMIs we plan to offer, the cut-off score falls at a point where a number of applicants have achieved the same GAMSAT score, we may increase or reduce the number of MMIs we conduct to accommodate all applicants who have received that score. This means that all eligible applicants with the same GAMSAT score are considered equally.
  • Applicants will then be invited to attend an MMI which is a values-based recruitment process and reinforces objectivity.
  • Once all of our interviews are conducted, we rank MMI scores and the highest performing applicants within each group are made an offer to study Medicine MBBS (graduate entry) at St George’s.

Due to the demanding nature of the Medicine MBBS (graduate entry) programme, it is important that applicants can demonstrate recent engagement in education. If your degree was awarded more than five years ago, we will accept any of the following qualifications, in any subject (excluding General Studies), awarded between summer 2020 and summer 2025, as evidence of recent education.

Our graduate entry MBBS provides a well-rounded base of scientific medical education and practice, equipping you with the latest skills and techniques to bring benefits to patients and populations, with particular given to developing you as a professional and person over and above the role of the doctor. It is made up of core curriculum elements and opportunities for in-depth study in areas of your choice.

Graduate entry medicine programmes involve rigorous, fast-paced study in your first year. Building on the intellectual skills gained through your previous undergraduate degree, Year 1 covers the essential principles of all the curriculum themes, covering the first two years of knowledge from the conventional five-year pathway in one year.

Known as the ‘ clinical science year’ , this year is underpinned by three main themes:

Basic and clinical sciences: Provides core professional knowledge of the structure, function and development of the normal human body and the changes that occur as the result of disease, injury, abnormal development and ageing.

Professional skills: Equips you with the core patient-centred communication, clinical and procedural skills integral to becoming a doctor, developed and integrated first through simulated practice involving diverse and authentic clinical scenarios, then actual placement experience.

Patients, populations and society: Provides a firm understanding of the health behaviours, attitudes, cultural beliefs and socio-economic factors that influence health outcomes in individuals and communities. You’ll learn to appreciate the need for a partnership with patients and communities that takes account of these components, understands evidence for harms and benefits of medical intervention and can work professionally in a complex, uncertain and evolving field.

In the first year and second transition year, these themes are delivered through seven modules: Foundations of Clinical Science; Life Support; Life Maintenance; Life Cycle; Life Protection; Life Structure; and Life Control. During the first year, the emphasis is on lectures, tutorials and group activity, but there is a strong underlying focus on patient care and early patient contact through short clinical and community-based placements.

Year 1 modules

Typical learning week for clinical sciences (Year 1, MBBS4)

The following shows an example timetable for a learning week on this course. Please note that this is for illustrative purposes only as timetables will vary in between modules.

From Year 2 – the ‘transition year’ – the emphasis shifts away from lecture-based activity to a combination of problem based learning and SSCs of study based on your own interests, rotating with experiential learning on clinical attachments. Problem based learning in Year 2 covers:

  • Foundations of Clinical Practice: Establishes core knowledge and skills for safe transition to clinical placements.
  • Mechanisms of disease: Reviews and extends learning in life protection topics.
  • Body systems: Revisits learning in each major organ system to support generalist clinical history and examination skills.
  • Specialties: Contains key cases from areas covered in penultimate year placements: paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, neurology, psychiatry and rheumatology.

As well as a three-week block based around your SSC, you will undertake five-week clinical placement blocks in Medicine, Surgery and General Practice (outlined below). These incorporate a weekly half-day lecture and tutorial programme to support the development of planning and interpreting core investigations and prescribing common drugs. These sessions are delivered by leading practitioners in their fields and focus on analytical skills and practical knowhow.

  • Medicine: Includes cases from all core body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal (GI), renal, endocrine, musculoskeletal and neurological systems. Interpretation of basic investigations such as electrocardiograms (ECGs), chest x ray and common blood tests is practised at the bedside and supported by transition to practice (TTP) and investigation of disease (IOD) teaching.
  • Surgery: You’ll participate in the work of your assigned clinical team, on ward rounds, attending operating theatre, radiology and pathology meetings. Bedside teaching, supervised and self-directed patient contact provide the stimulus for learning about common and important surgical conditions, including pre- and post-operative care, GI and urological conditions.
  • General Practice: Themes include using approaches from the humanities to focus on understanding the patient experience, clinical reasoning skills required for the first/early presentation of illness, patient-centred consultation skills, therapeutic relationships, and the impact of the ever-changing health care system on the patient journey.

Intercalated iMSc degree: optional additional year

As an alternative to an intercalated bachelor’s degree, students can apply competitively after their third year to aim for an iMSc, again internally or externally. All taught components of an intercalated master’s programme must be completed before the start of your final year in August and we would also expect you to have completed your research project by this point in time, despite the usual end date being October each year. All of St George’s master’s programmes meet these requirements, as do some external courses.

Years 3 and 4

Subsequent years have increasing amounts of clinical exposure and are known as the ‘clinical practice years’ . Students are increasingly responsible as partners in their own development, with an increasing emphasis on experiential learning in the workplace in line with GMC guidance.

Year 4, the penultimate year, features rotation through a series of clinical attachments in: medicine, senior health, cardiology, surgery (including surgical specialties), palliative care, neurology, neurosurgery, neurorehabilitation, psychiatry, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics.

In the final year, five-week assistantships in medicine, surgery and general practice offer the opportunity for a one-to-one apprenticeship with a foundation (junior) doctor or GP. You’ll also experience rotations in critical care and anaesthetics, accident and emergency, and public health.

After finals assessments, you will undertake a five-week elective activity. This is an opportunity for you to explore, in a practical setting, an aspect of medicine of particular interest to you or relevant to your future career in medicine, anywhere in the world.

Clinical attachments are based at healthcare trusts, hospitals and other community-based sites mostly in south London and the south east of England. In the later years of the course, placements can include more distant sites in order that students gain experience in a range of urban and more rural settings.

Clinical placements

Learning from patients, clinicians and other healthcare professionals in practice is a fundamental part of training to become a doctor. It is the variety and volume of clinical placement opportunities we offer that students tell us they like most about our course. Teaching and learning is initially supplemented by and later dependent on attachments throughout South West London and beyond in areas of general practice, hospitals and other community settings, for example, palliative care hospices, sexual health clinics or community hospitals. You will gain experience of working as part of a team, demonstrating professional behaviour and performing (under supervision) a range of procedures, beginning with routine procedures and culminating in more advanced, highly skilled techniques by the end of your course.

During the first year, you will undertake short clinical and community-based placements, which mark the beginning of your career long clinical and professionalism learning. Building on your clinical communication skills and clinical skills, you will learn and practise simple clinical procedures. You will not yet be expected to clerk patients and present their problems in the ways you will be during the clinical practice years, but instead will be encouraged to talk and listen to patients and their carers as people, and learn from them in their role as ‘experts by experience’. In particular, we want you to learn about their experiences of their care, good and bad and their expectations of the various professionals caring for them. Understanding the significance of working in true partnership with patients is at the heart of good medical practice.

Learning the importance of working collaboratively and effectively with other professionals in the health care team is also an essential part of your training. You will have opportunities to extend your knowledge of the roles of the various members of the health care team, and seek their views on the role of the doctor within the team. You will take part in nursing shifts, so that you can fully orientate yourself to the hospital environment, take an active part and contribute to ward life under nursing supervision.

General Practice

Year 1: Community and general practice visits throughout the year

During Year 2, your transition from the academic environment to learning in the workplace continues, with longer placements during which you become more able to learn effectively and safely from direct patient contact, establishing the trust of patients and colleagues. By the end of this year you should be fluent in taking a history and examining adult patients, and giving a basic list of potential diagnoses and initial management plans.

Year 3: One 5-week placement

Hospital placements

Year 3: Two 5-week placements in each of medicine and surgery

In Year 3 almost all learning is on clinical placements, including your first exposure to a range of specialist areas, so that by the end of the year you are able to tailor your diagnostic skills and outline investigation and management plans for common conditions, with expanded skills in the specialities you have encountered.

Year 3: 11 weeks integrated medical specialities, 10 weeks general surgery and surgical specialities, one week palliative care, and five-and-a-half weeks each neurology stroke and rehabilitation, psychiatry, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Your final year then lays the groundwork preparing you to be a foundation doctor, with assistantships in general practice, medicine and surgery, and advanced clinical practice experience in emergency medicine, critical care and anaesthetics as well as a public health block.

General practice

Year 4: Five week placement.

Year 4: Three five-week assistantships in each of medicine, general practice and surgery, four weeks critical care and anaesthetics, four weeks emergency medicine

Public health

Year 4: 2 week clinical placement.

You should be prepared to travel for your placements across Greater London, neighbouring counties and beyond.

You are supervised by experienced clinicians and trained mentors. You also receive support from your University personal tutor, specialty and year leads with a mixture of fixed and student initiated contacts.

*This list is subject to change and should be used as a guide of where students may be able to go. In the final year, placements are also provided at more distant sites, including Maidstone, Royal Devon and Exeter, Yeovil and Torbay.

Practice placement locations include:*

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London

Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust, Carshalton, London

Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, Kingston, Surrey

Croydon Health Sciences NHS Trust, Croydon, London

South West London and St George’s Mental Health Trust

East Kent Hospital

East Surrey Hospital

Frimley Park Hospital

Ashford & St Peters

During your course, you will acquire the scientific and clinical expertise to keep abreast of the changes in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine required for our rapidly changing societies. We will equip you to apply for the specialty training you desire and support you to become future healthcare leaders.

The curriculum is organised into integrated learning weeks, supported by case-based and problem-based learning tutorials. We use a variety of teaching styles to encourage learning, including directed self-learning, student-selected study and independent study:

Lectures and seminars: Lecture based teaching from specialist scientists and clinicians is designed to support your depth of learning and the relevance to clinical practice of each core subject. Complementary sociology, psychology, professionalism, ethics and critical appraisal sessions run alongside and stimulate analysis and critical thinking.

Small group teaching: Wherever possible, teaching and learning occurs in small groups. Weekly clinical skills and communication skills sessions all occur in the small group format allowing a high degree of learner engagement, role play and reflection.

Inter-professional learning: In the first year, you will take part in shared learning with students from other healthcare professions, including interactive workshops on the themes of professionalism and ethics. This interprofessional focus aims to demonstrate fundamental principles that are essential to all healthcare workers, especially those that form the foundation for safe practice, effective and appropriate patient-centred care.

Case-based learning: Each week begins and ends with a tutorial based on a clinical scenario. By applying the taught theory to a clinical context, both your critical skills and learning techniques develop.

Problem-based learning: Given a clinical problem, you use self-directed research to make a diagnosis and suggest an appropriate course of action. Problem-based learning encourages learning in context, self-motivation and deep, rather than surface understanding.

Clinical and communication skills sessions: At St George’s we are proud of our emphasis on clinical communication in the MBBS curriculum. What used to be called a ‘good bedside manner’ is now recognised as an evidence-based core clinical competence. We work with you to develop empathic practice and a relationship of trust with your future patients. You will learn to sensitively draw out the patient’s illness and clinical history, how to give information and clear explanations, and how to negotiate with patients and relatives in order to share decisions about their healthcare.

Multimodal Anatomy teaching: Interactive and team-based learning will take place in the Anatomy suite using prosections, plastinated and potted (preserved) specimens, anatomical models, and 3D digital software

Expert tutorials: These cover the full breadth of topics over the year and feature expert patients, practising clinicians and sometimes representatives from the third sector, for example, the Alzheimer's Society or alcohol support teams.

Online learning: Staff at St George’s have designed a number of Massive Open Online Learning Courses (MOOCs) to support your learning and interest in particular areas, such as genomics or organ donation. We make use of online resources, such as Speaking Clinically, which has a huge number of videos in which patients talk about their conditions, and have also developed virtual anatomy lessons. Our anatomists have videoed dissection resources and overlayed the images with X-rays and 3D computational graphics to aid your learning and engagement.

Our expertise

The extensive experience of our teaching team spans the full breadth of medical and surgical specialists, GPs, biomedical scientists and research scientists. For example, our transition year is led by an A&E consultant, the penultimate year by a renal and acute medicine physician, and final year by a urological surgeon.

Course Director Professor Hannah Cock is a consultant neurologist in the Atkinson Morley Regional Epilepsy Network, based at St George’s hospital. In addition to her educational roles, she has research interests in status epilepticus (prolonged uncontrolled seizures), the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy, and improving services and care for people with epilepsy.

Our researchers are contributing to the University research focused on advancing the prevention and treatment of disease in the fields of population health, heart disease and infection – three of the greatest challenges to global health in the 21st century. Our focus on health and biosciences has recently been targeted at helping to understand the immunology, virology, and genetics of Covid-19 to inform advances in new diagnostics, new treatments and a vaccine. We are also influencing public health policy and providing evidence-based information and advice to frontline healthcare practitioners.

During the course, you’ll also have the opportunity to study alongside highly experienced clinicians and learn directly from junior doctors on the job, something our students particularly enjoy.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed in three domains:

  • Professional Knowledge: through Year Specific Knowledge Tests (YSKT) in Years 1, 2(T) and 3(P)
  • Professional Skills: through Clinical Competency Assessments (CCA) in years 1, 2(T) and 3(P)
  • Becoming a Doctor: through longitudinal professional assessment, attendance, clinical practice skills and projects in each year of the Programme.

All domains must be passed independently in order to progress to the subsequent year.

During Year 1, there is one practice ‘formative’ assessment of knowledge, and one of clinical competency, to prepare you for summative assessments later in the year, to prepare you for summative assessments later in the year, and during the remainder of the programme. Teaching Staff are encouraged to also include formative quizzes within their learning materials throughout the curriculum.

Knowledge assessment methods include short answer questions and single best answer questions. CCAs take the form of a set of structured tasks, which can include practical procedures, interviewing skills and examination of patients.

Workplace (placement) based assessments , for example, mini-CEX (Clinical Evaluation Exercise), direct observations of practical procedures (DOPS), and case based discussion (CBD) also play an increasing role in the later years of the curriculum, for both formative and summative purposes. These tasks and activities during placements provide an opportunity to receive expert feedback, reflect on and discuss events and your own experiences in the real clinical environment. Together with attendance, behaviour, a personal and professional development portfolio, and variety of projects, this forms part of the  Becoming a Doctor  domain, which builds and assesses professional behaviour each year, and serves as an evolving portfolio to evidence your knowledge and experience to support later career plans.

Final year assessments (for graduates from 2024-25 onwards) will take the form of the National Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) comprising an Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), and the Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA). This will be instead of our current Final year AKT and CCA, but with essentially the same format and delivery. We have also been, and will continue to take part in the pilots for the MLA, and member of our assessment team are also involved in the MLA. The Prescribing Safety Assessment , and Becoming a Doctor Domain must also be passed in Final year prior to graduation under our Scheme of Assessment.

MBBS graduates who wish to undertake the UK foundation programme must also take the situational judgement test (SJT), which is a national assessment. Competence in all foundation year Practical Skills and Procedures ( Outcomes for graduates – Practical skills and procedures - GMC (gmc-uk.org) _ must be achieved on at least one occasion, within the two clinical practice years prior to graduation.

Hannah Cock

Hannah Cock

Course Director

Professor Cock is course director for MBBS, a consultant neurologist (epilepsy), and research active

Our MBBS programme is professionally accredited and quality assured by the General Medical Council (GMC), the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. Successful graduates go on to a diverse range of careers, with the vast majority choosing to complete the GMC Foundation Programme to practice medicine in the UK.

Registering with the GMC

At the end of the undergraduate course, you will receive your MBBS degree, which is a primary medical qualification (PMQ). Holding a PMQ entitles you to provisional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), as long as the GMC has no concerns relating to your fitness to practise.

In 2024, The GMC is introducing a national Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) which will form part of your final examinations. All medical students graduating from UK universities from the academic year 2024–25 onwards will be required to pass the MLA as part of their degree before they can join the medical register.

UK Medical Foundation Programme

After graduation, the majority of our graduates go on to complete the two-year UK Foundation Programme. This is a two-year work-based training programme that enables you to work and practice as a doctor in the UK. Provisionally registered doctors can only practice in approved Foundation Year 1 posts; the law does not allow provisionally registered doctors to undertake any other type of work as a doctor within the UK.

Through an integrated study programme of medical sciences and clinical sciences, our graduates are fully equipped to perform well in the GMC Foundation Programme and further develop the essential knowledge and competencies needed to pursue a specialist discipline.

To obtain a Foundation Year 1 post, you will need to apply during the final year of your undergraduate course through the UK Foundation Programme Office selection scheme, which allocates these posts to graduates on a competitive basis. So far, all suitably qualified UK graduates have found a place on the Foundation Year 1 programme, but this cannot be guaranteed. Successful completion of the Foundation Year 1 programme is normally achieved within 12 months and is marked by the award of a Certificate of Experience. You will then be eligible to apply for full registration with the General Medical Council. You need full registration with a licence to practice medicine unsupervised in the UK in the NHS or private practice. Regulations in this area change from time to time so we recommend visiting Medical Careers NHS, which also provides information on working as a doctor.

Practicing overseas

UK Medical Programmes, including ours, are quality-assured and recognised internationally. However, applicants are always advised to check with individual national authorities if they wish to practise outside the UK after graduation. In some instances, students may need to take a national licensing assessment for the relevant country, in addition to their medical degree in order to be able to practice there. Our programme is geared towards supporting students to practice in the UK. As such, we do not provide any specific support for overseas assessments (such as the USMLE) nor residency matching services.

Alternative careers

Most graduates work as doctors in the NHS, but our graduates also pursue a variety of alternative career options including a career in academia, teaching or conducting research, pharmaceuticals, or hospital management.

Career Profiles

Our courses can lead students to a diverse range of career options. Read about the experiences of St George's alumni and see where this course could take you.

St George’s is the only UK university based on a hospital site, St George’s Hospital, which is where the Channel 4 television series 24 hours in A&E is filmed. We offer a unique opportunity to study and work alongside the full range of clinical professionals and their patients. Based in the thriving multi-cultural hub of Tooting in South West London, our location has the added advantage of being just a short tube ride from Central London and all the city lifestyle has to offer.

We also have a range of specialist health and academic facilities to support your learning, listed below.

Clinical skills room

This self-directed learning room provides a space where you can practise clinical skills outside of the formal teaching sessions. Equipment needed is available in the room or can be borrowed from our Teaching Services team. This facility provides an opportunity for peer practice and shared learning.

Laboratories

Our science laboratories are fully fitted with equipment for biological, chemistry, biomedical, molecular biology and pharmacy practicals. This includes microscopes, spectrophotometers, DNA amplifiers, organ baths and specialist glassware. We also have audio visual equipment installed, so that microscope images can be projected on to large screens.

Anatomy suite

The anatomy suite is where present and future healthcare professionals and scientists in the hospital and University learn or expand on their anatomy knowledge directly from the human body, through access to high quality anatomy resources. These include plastinated (preserved) specimens, osteological materials, anatomical models and digital/imaging resources such as Anatomage tables and Complete Anatomy.

Museum of Human Diseases

Our on-site museum houses a collection of over 2,000 pathological specimens, including a number of original specimens donated by Sir Benjamin Collins Brodie in 1843. This space is used for small group tutorials by students across all of our courses as an educational tool to help you understand the mechanisms of disease.

There are opportunities for simulated practice in all years of the course both within the University, and across our partner NHS Trusts. This includes access to the St George’s Hospital Advanced Patient Simulator Centre in Final year.

Library and learning technology

Our modern health sciences library offers a wide range of books, e-books, academic journals and other resources to support you. You will also have access to online resources, such as the Canvas virtual learning environment

and our Hunter discovery service to help you find the information you need. The library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and comprises silent, quiet and group learning areas, as well as four group discussion rooms.

IT facilities

We have five computer suites housing 260 workstations. Three of these suites are accessible 24 hours a day. It’s easy to find a free space with our handy real-time computer locator. We also have 75 self-service laptops available. Free Wi-Fi covers the whole campus, including all accommodation. You can use these resources to access your course materials, discussion boards and feedback through Canvas.

Student support

As a mature student at St George’s, you’ll be welcomed by a multicultural student and staff body of different ages, ethnicities, nationalities and backgrounds, all with one thing in common – an interest in healthcare, science and medicine.

Students frequently tell us they greatly appreciate the diversity of our student and staff body, as well as the patients who access healthcare services in the borough of Wandsworth. The University attracts both school leavers as well as a  ‘mature’ students, aged 21 or over when they start; many have family and caring responsibilities.

We offer a full range of academic support and student services across all institutes, departments and faculties, some of which are listed below. We take pride in offering a transformative educational experience underpinned by cooperation and collaboration between staff and students. Our innovative Student-Staff Partnership Grants (SSPGs), for example, provide funding for small projects led jointly by students and staff. Previous projects involving our students have included the creation of a handbook to highlight the often different presentation of clinical signs on black and brown skin, as well as a series of video profiles of doctors and healthcare professionals in different specialities at various stages of their careers.

Personal tutor

On arrival, you will be allocated a personal tutor – someone with whom you can have regular contact, who you ask questions and discuss problems with, both academic and personal. The main purpose of a personal tutor is to monitor your progress, pick up and help you resolve any problems, whether academic or welfare related. Even if they don’t have the answer they will point you in the right direction towards the best people to deal with specific problems.

Induction programme

Within your first week at St George’s, you’ll take part in an induction programme to help with your orientation and introduce you to various study skills, including interprofessional learning and use of the Anatomy suite. Additional sessions provide advice and guidance about the Registry, Students’ Union, personal tutor system, safety, occupational health and sexual health awareness.

Academic staff support

In addition to scheduled sessions, you’ll have access to your lecturers, module and placement leads usually by arrangement via email. The senior leadership team (course director, deputy, assessment and year leads) meet regularly with year representatives, and also arrange drop in/FAQ sessions where needed, in addition to being contactable directly as with all staff.

We have a wide variety of support resources, including close academic review and support from the Course Team, so that students who are experiencing challenges or difficulty can be proactively supported by the academic development centre, and other appropriate support services or reasonable adjustments.

Clinical Teaching Fellows

Clinical Teaching Fellows (CTFs) are fully qualified junior doctors, who support the delivery of teaching within St George's, University of London and St George’s Hospital. They are also employed at many of our partner sites, including Ashford and St Peter’s, Croydon, Epsom and St Helier, East Surrey, Kingston, and Springfield hospitals.

Mums and dads scheme

‘Mums and dads’ is a buddy scheme organised by the Students’ Union. Every fresher (first year student) has the choice of being assigned a ‘parent’ from the year above in their respective course. The returning student then acts as a ‘go to’ for advice about courses and university life, providing an additional support system during your first year, both academically and socially. They have been in your position and know the struggles of starting university; they also know all of the best pubs, clubs, restaurants, gyms and will help introduce you to your new St George’s family.

Student Life Centre

Our Student Centre team can help you with almost any aspect of student life: finances, accommodation, exams and assessment, academic procedures, admissions, international queries, careers, disability and wellbeing, even finding your way around – whatever it takes to make you feel at home.

Careers service

Our careers service works to support current students and recent graduates to find and maintain a rewarding and successful career. As well as general workshops on topics such as writing a CV and developing interview skills, the service works with careers tutors from each course area to ensure there are careers activities specific to your programmes and future profession. You will also be able to book a one-to-one appointment with a careers consultant to discuss all aspects of careers and employability. Kansas City, MO — Another co-founder of a so-called Christian health care sharing ministry in St. Joseph, Mo., pleaded guilty in federal court today to his role in an $8 million wire fraud conspiracy that cheated hundreds of members, and to making false statements on a personal tax return.

James L. McGinnis of St. Joseph, waived his right to a grand jury and pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to a federal information that charges him with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of making false statements on a tax return.

McGinnis co-founded Medical Cost Sharing, a tax-exempt organization, and served as its chief operating officer from 2014 through December 2022.

Craig Anthony Reynolds of St. Joseph, another co-founder of Medical Cost Sharing, pleaded guilty to the same charges in a separate but related case on Nov. 14, 2023. Reynolds incorporated and ran Medical Cost Sharing as its president and chief executive officer from 2014 through December 2022.

McGinnis and Reynolds each admitted that he and his co-conspirators used false and fraudulent promises to market Medical Cost Sharing as a “Health Care Sharing Ministry” to defraud hundreds of “ministry members.” They collected more than $8 million in member “contributions,” yet paid only 3.1 percent in health care claims so that they could personally profit and take most of the members’ contributions for themselves.

McGinnis and Reynolds pocketed at least $5,168,268 from the member contributions from December 2015 through December 2022. Thus, McGinnis and Reynolds took at least 64 percent of total member contributions for their personal profit.

McGinnis and Reynolds marketed Medical Cost Sharing as a “Christian Health Care Sharing Ministry” through insurance brokers, radio stations, social media, and its website. Medical Cost Sharing sales materials promoted its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt designation, advertising that it was different from for profit health insurance. The Medical Cost Sharing website claimed, “while we are not an insurance company, many think of us as a Christian Health Insurance, or Christian Medical Insurance because, like conventional insurance plans, we help you pay your healthcare costs. We help you protect your family. But unlike these corporate, profit based plans, we are a healthcare sharing ministry … your healthcare costs are shared with other Christians enrolled in our medical sharing plans.”

Medical Cost Sharing promised its member that if they paid monthly “contributions,” Medical Cost Sharing would pay claims after the members’ “personal responsibility” (deductible) was met.

In reality, McGinnis and Reynolds admitted, Medical Cost Sharing rarely paid members’ health care claims. Sometimes Medical Cost Sharing would pay a part of a claim if the member filed a complaint with their state attorney general and/or hired an attorney to represent them against Medical Cost Sharing.

Medical Cost Sharing paid no claims at all from Feb. 22, 2021, through December 2022, although it collected a total of nearly $1.2 million in dues in 2021 and 2022.

On Dec. 13, 2022, federal agents served search warrants on the Medical Cost Sharing business location and the residences of McGinnis and Reynolds and seized property generated from Medical Cost Sharing proceeds. Medical Cost Sharing continued to try to collect membership dues after the search and seizure warrants. On Dec. 27, 2022, the court entered a temporary restraining order that prohibited Medical Cost Sharing, McGinnis, and Reynolds, from continuing to perpetrate a fraudulent scheme and from processing Medical Cost Sharing member payments, among other actions.

In addition to the wire fraud conspiracy, McGinnis also pleaded guilty today to making false statements on a personal tax return. McGinnis admitted that he filed a return that claimed he had no taxable income in 2019. Reynolds actually received at least $140,881 in taxable income in 2019.

Under the terms of today’s plea agreement, McGinnis must pay restitution to Medical Cost Sharing member victims and to the IRS. McGinnis also must forfeit to the government any property obtained from the wire fraud conspiracy and a money judgment representing all proceeds obtained from the scheme.

Under federal statutes, McGinnis is subject to a sentence of up to 23 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kathleen D. Mahoney, Patrick Daly, and John Constance. It was investigated by the IRS Criminal Investigation (CI) and the FBI.

CI is the criminal investigative arm of the IRS, responsible for conducting financial crime investigations, including tax fraud, narcotics trafficking, money-laundering, public corruption, healthcare fraud, identity theft and more. CI special agents are the only federal law enforcement agents with investigative jurisdiction over violations of the Internal Revenue Code, obtaining a more than a 90 percent federal conviction rate. The agency has 20 field offices located across the U.S. and 12 attaché posts abroad.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

Best Catamarans Over 50 Feet

All kinds of high-end luxury sailing you could ever imagine can be experienced on Catamarans Over 50 Feet. It just depends on the boat at hand. Why spend your holiday cruising or liveaboard on a monohull when comfortable catamarans exist?

A catamaran is quite different from a regular monohull. Catamarans are typically designed with two equal-sized hulls and derive their stability from their wide beam; unlike a one-hulled boat deriving stability from a loaded undersurface.

The average catamaran is 38-47 feet in size. Usually, they are equipped with four large cabins with double or queen-sized beds, each cabin having an in-suite head. These vessels, originally designed for fishing, have, over the years, evolved and have become very popular in recent years. Lately, many boatbuilders are focusing more and more on building large catamarans over 50 feet as more and more people are starting to liveaboard and put more emphasis on comfort and luxury than their sailing performance.

In 2011, the biggest catamaran ever was built by Pendennis Shipyard in the UK, at 145 feet in length! It is equipped with a trampoline, a jacuzzi and can accommodate 12 guests in 5 cabins. This boat is designed to accommodate all the luxuries and adornments that can be found on a watercraft.

Here are the best sailing catamarans over 50 feet, in no particular order.

Length: 50 Feet

Price: From $500k to $1.5 Million USD On the Used Market

Back in 2019, the Lagoon 50 was awarded the best multihull of Sail Magazine. A product of the world’s largest boat manufacturer Lagoon, established in 1984, is majorly famous for the design and construction of cruising catamarans, which infuse top-notch designs, upscale comfort, and great sailing performances to one’s boating experience. Every detail is carefully thought out to establish novel and spacious architecture with a homely ambiance.

It’s a perfect balance between the model Lagoon 450 and the lofty 52. The Lagoon 50 has an encompassing view, generous volumes with a self-tacking jib, and a shorter mast for easily simplified maneuvers. It has two cockpits, one large one facing the sea and the other for seating at foredeck or on a deck chair. The hulls being large enough to contain more than 2 cabins, you can have up to six cabins. Italian agency Nauto Design Studio set a standard for their innovative interior designs every time. This vessel boasts of a unique brand signature, providing increased performance and a detailed wood finish to be fitted for the owner. Unconventional lines are linked with luxury, versatility, and a layout of technical options to cater to everyone’s needs.

Length: 52 Feet

Looking for something contemporary and luxurious? Lagoon 52 takes the cake in that way. This boat signified a new stage in the design of cruising catamarans. The Lagoon 52 is a product of the prolonged conversations between Lagoon’s customary VPLP, Nauto design agency, and the Lagoon design department. It comes in two versions: The Lagoon 52 FlyBridge, known as Lagoon 52F, and Lagoon 52 SporTop.

The combination of onboard comfort with its sailing performance is perfect and in sync. The wide side decks allow easy movement onboard. The cockpit and saloon also offer spacious living areas. The vertical bows of the boat have a diamond-shaped appearance with diagonal shaped hull and a lifting deck house.

The boat is easily accessible and safe thanks to the open rear skirts. Most of the features in this luxurious watercraft can be found in the aforementioned Lagoon 50. It has a perfect blend for its easy use, a comfy, elegant interior, amazing space, and lighting. You’re sure to get your money’s worth with the LAGOON 52.

Privilege Series 5

Price: Around $1-1.5 Million USD

At 50 feet, this boat is quite marvelous and a privilege to spend your time in as a cruiser or owner. The Privilège Series 5 is the world’s first 50 feet sailing catamaran. This vessel was built by Privilège Marine, a French company based in Les Sables-d’Olonne, France. They are famous for building premium luxury catamarans and designed by French Naval Architect Marc Lombard. The Privilège Series 5 is equipped with three or four double and a full-sized owner’s cabin located in the yacht’s center. Leopard 50L

Length: 50 Ft 6 In

Price: Around $1 Million USD

The Leopard 48, which was launched in 2012, was one of the most popular cruising cats ever designed. But the design was beginning to become dated, even as new orders kept coming in. So, Robertson & Caine, who build the Leopard cats, set out to improve on what was already great. The new 50 was their answer and comes with many innovations that will make owners happy. We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.

The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

This expansive FlyBridge takes space to a whole new dimension as it is larger than its siblings with their award-winning aspects. A Flybridge is basically a version of catamarans that affords you the luxury of outdoor space, come rain or shine. Leopard 58 is more about space, bragging about 750 square feet in just the saloon alone. It gives you amazing comfort and is naturally luminous. With an open plan layout, the galley available means the meal making and interaction will be easy. Highly recommended for a family outdoor gathering.

Popularly called the Seawind 52 because of its 52 feet size. The Seawind 52′ 1600 is designed by world-renowned architects Reichel Pugh. Like the Lagoon 52, it’s a perfect balance for onboard comfort and performance sailing and sea safety. Perfect for sailors or boat lovers who are looking for a little extra.

This catamaran sets a standard for offshore sailing because of its simple sailing methods, large open cockpit space, and twin protected helms. Equipped with a three or four-cabin design that affords the owner’s cabin expansive living space, great storage, high aspect riders, daggerboards, an elegant fit/finish, and infused carbon-reinforced construction.

Seawind 1600

Price: Around $1 Million USD New

The new Seawind 1600 has been in the works for a while and has finally arrived on the market. The Reichel Pugh design is a departure from the more conservative looks of the other Seawinds and embraces a very Euro-style with plumb bows, hard chines, a swept-back cabin, and a large open cockpit with helm stations on both sides. The boat is a pure performance cruiser that was conceived as a blue water voyaging boat for a family. At 52 feet, it falls within the size range that an experienced couple can handle, so it would make a great platform for a couple to explore the world. The 1600 like all of the Seawinds and Corsairs, are built in Vietnam.

Nautitech 542

Length: 54 Feet

Xquisite X5

Length: 51 Feet

Price: Around $1.5 Million USD

Once you have met your first Xquisite X5, you will never forget its absolute distinctive looks and almost space-traveling styling. The whole look of the boat, with its large reverse curving arches and cat’s eye windows, says right out loud that you need to pay attention. The boat itself is a very modern design with a classic and comfortable interior. It sails better than most of its peers in the 50-foot range and is set up cleverly so one watchstander can hand, reef, and steer all from the protected comfort of the raised steering station. Tomas and Sara, who build the boats in South Africa, are veteran cruisers and owned hull number one of the X5 line before taking over the company. Their attention to detail and the innovations they have incorporated into the boats all stem from their time living aboard and blue water sailing.

Privilege 615

Length: 61 Feet

Price: From $800k to $1.3 Million USD on the Used Market

When it comes to onboard luxury, Marc Lombard, who designed this catamaran, is an expert in that field. The 615 is a combination of simplistic and superior design with an outstanding crew, results in the ultimate luxury Caribbean cruising experience. The impeccable elegance of the interior with a lavish owner’s suite and the boat’s perfect wood quality are two great reasons to make you get the boat. The freedom to choose a four or five-double cabin is another, depending on the size of the family.

Followed closely by its outstanding exterior, you’re sure to fall in love with it on sight, from the cockpit to the foredeck. Balance 526

Length: 52ft 6in

Price: From $1.3 to $1.6 Million USD New

Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. The queen of the line is the Balance 526 that was introduced a few years ago and has proven to be a very successful player in the 50-foot plus segment of the cat market. Built in South Africa by noted composite experts, the 526 offers a well-conceived combination of great sailing performance and luxury living in a boat that can be handled by an experienced couple.

The boat has plenty of innovations, among them a helm that can be tilted up so you can steer from the raised helm station or tilted down so you can steer from the protection of the cockpit. Very cool. The design does not take any particular element to the “extreme.” Instead, Berman and his crew have sought to provide a boat that is truly well balanced in all aspects. And, they’ve done it.

We take pride in our happy customers

Your team delivered on every mark. You’ve got an amazing broker in Mark Wattrus and I’m confident you will have continued success moving forward together. He was available 24/7 whenever I had questions. We had a great initial visit on the boat and his marketing plan and photos were superb

I bought a yacht that I had never seen. I did this because I trusted my broker Andrew Holland. It was not an easy job for Andrew, as I am an experienced boat builder and owner of previous yachts, but work in West Africa. Imagine how hard it was to communicate what I was looking for. Andrew came up with exactly what I wanted. He dealt with time delays, all my questions at odd hours, and was there for the survey. He reported honestly and professionally. After buying the yacht, I arrived at the boat on a Sunday night, after dark, after travelling from West Africa to the Caribbean, and found it was better than expected. He never pulled punches and made me aware of shortfalls. I expected to spend my one month leave working on the boat, but actually spent less than one week, and was able to spend 3 weeks sailing – wonderful bonus.

Thank you Andrew for putting up with all my questions, all my worries and all my crazy out of the time zone concerns – you were totally professional, but also I know that if and when we meet up, it will be like a friend finally meeting. You are always welcome on Aseka.

— Beverly Cory

Outstanding company with professional subject matter experts. If I were to buy or sell cruising sailboat, particularly a catamaran, Andrew would be my go to broker.

I have been sailing since I was a child and attended Massachusetts Maritime Academy. But when my wife and I began the process of purchasing an ocean cruising/racing catamaran, I realized that this is a world unto itself. Obviously, we needed to find someone knowledgeable to help us make an informed decision. More importantly, we needed someone honest and willing to put our interests before his or her own. I was lucky to work with Phil Berman at The Multihull Company. He repeatedly shunned the fast buck, choosing instead to work the long road to connect us with the “perfect boat”. I would be glad to recommend Phil and his company to anyone planning to purchase or sell a performance sailing machine.

— Eric Boutiette

Andrew Hodgdon was our broker when we bought our 2018 Lagoon 450F in Antigua in April 2922. He provided great service and was very attentive to our needs. We would highly recommend Andrew and the Multihull Company.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
