The Hatteras 70 Motoryacht is designed to meet the needs of the live-aboard yachtsman, the smaller of three guest staterooms has been arranged as a study of office with built-in desk, bookcases, or onboard computer work station.

The master suite has a king-size tapered berth, built-in vanity, his and her dressers, nightstands, walk-in wardrobe, a stereo system, and a private head with whirlpool bath and shower. This stateroom is accessed by a stairwell from the salon.

All other guest accommodations are forward of the walk-in engine room. In addition to the guest suite with queen bed and private head, there is a guest stateroom with twin berths and an adjoining head with a stall shower that also serves as a day head. The bow stateroom with upper and lower berths and private head also with stall shower.

The main deck, the enclosed pilothouse gives access to the flying bridge, side decks, and the galley area. Included in galley space is a U-shaped dinette, four-burner cooktop, refrigerator/freezer, food center, and dishwasher. 

The spacious salon measures 24 feet in length, with a usable 310 square feet, providing space for comfortable dining and lounging areas, At the forward end of the salon is a built-in entertainment center complete with color television and stereo system. There is an L-shaped wet bar with a sink, icemaker, and bottle storage.

If you are lucky enough to be able to live aboard your boat, the world is your oyster. Yes, truly. The world. You have a luxury that very few people do. You can pick pretty much any marina in the world and live there. So long as you can afford the Marina fees, you should have no trouble at all.

Once you are sure that living full time on your boat is for you, there comes the big question. Where do you want to live? The answer to that varies from person to person. Maybe you want to be close to a big city? Maybe you want to be near family? Maybe you want great access to the rest of the world? Maybe you want to live where the weather is good, the people are friendly, and the food is great? Maybe you want to liveaboard in Florida.

If that is the case, you are in luck, this article will act as your guide. This article not only explains why you might want to live in Florida but where exactly would be best for you. Here are some of the best liveaboard marinas in Florida.

Why might someone want to live aboard their boat in Florida?

Florida is a fantastic place to live. There is so much to do, so much to see, and the work opportunities are abundant. Florida may have a reputation for being a weird state, but that’s all talk.

Florida is very safe, it has strict laws with impressive transparency. Florida is an open book, if that’s something that appeals to you, maybe that alone is a good reason to move there.

If you are looking for a financial incentive, consider this. Florida has zero income tax. That’s right – 0% income tax. If you are someone making $50k a year, you may lose anywhere from $5k-$15k from that in taxes every year.

In Florida, you would keep all of that. Moving there is like getting an immediate raise. It is also important to consider this when you are factoring in your budget for a marina slip.

You will have far more disposable income, so you may be surprised how much more you have to spend on a high-quality marina slip in a prime location.

What are some things to consider when living aboard your boat in Florida?

Not everything in Florida is sunshine and rainbows. A lot of it is, but not everything. Florida is very hot, which is great. Florida is also very humid, which you might not enjoy as much. A lot of Florida is swampland, which when combined with the humid air, offers the perfect climate for mosquitos and other insects. If this is something that will bother you, maybe Florida isn’t for you. On the other hand, if you are living along the coast very close to the city there are going to be far fewer insects. Not none, but less.

Additionally, depending on where you live in Florida you may find the party culture uncomfortable. Miami can be crazy. It is a playground for the young, drunk, and wealthy. If this isn’t a problem for you, great! Maybe you are young, drunk, and wealthy yourself. If, on the other hand, you have left your partying and binge drinking behind you this may become rather grating over time. If you are trying to avoid this kind of nightlife, its a good idea to stick to Tampa Bay rather than Miami Beach. Despite what you might think, Tampa is far more relaxed.

The weather has been touched on briefly, day to day you have nothing to worry about. Bugs are annoying but not necessarily a big problem. What can be a big problem is the storms. Florida bears the brunt of a lot of tropical storms, tornados, hurricanes, twisters, cyclones, whatever you want to call them. A lot of them hit Florida. It isn’t uncommon for people to evacuate yearly for safer waters. This is typically a metaphor for ordinary folk. For people who live aboard their boat, this is literal. You may genuinely need to weigh anchor and sail for safer waters. Heading up the coast to New York in a hurry is a pain. It can also be very expensive.

If everything mentioned above has left you still wanting to live in Florida, perhaps it even made you more excited, then its time to pick where you might like to live. Choosing a Marina is not as much of a commitment as renting an apartment, leases can be far shorter and much more flexible. But, this normally comes at a price. You will be able to get a much better deal by committing to a longer lease. So, doing your best to make sure you pick the best marina for you the first time around is very important. It could end up saving you a small fortune in the long run. This next section is here to help you do just that.

What should I be looking for in my marina?

Your marina needs to work for you. How much your money will get you varies from place to place. Do you want to live as close to Miami as possible? Great. But you may only be able to afford the most basic marina. This is a marina with little to no added amenities, electricity and water may not even be included. Here are some things you might not have considered that you need, but that you might miss once you are without them.

Washing and drying facilities

If you are living on your boat, unless its a mega-yacht, chances are you don’t have a washer or dryer. This means having to rely on a laundromat. Which is fine, of course. But, when you consider you likely don’t have a car can become a real pain. You will need to do laundry at a minimum once or twice a week. Having to take a bus across town with all your dirty clothes is going to be tedious at best. That’s why choosing a marina with good washing and drying facilities is so important. It can save you a lot of headaches. And a lot of money, as the machines are typically free. They won’t be free in a laundromat, that’s for sure.

Being stuck on a boat is some people’s idea of heaven. But, it isn’t heaven for your body. People need to move around as much as possible. This is good for both mental and physical wellbeing. Having to go across town to find a decent gym is inconvenient, some marinas will have a gym and swimming pool included on the premises. This isn’t a necessity, just something that you might want to consider when choosing between two otherwise equal marinas.

Power and water hookups

Not all marinas come with power and water hookups. You will not only want but need access to both of these things if you plan to be there long term. If power and water are not included in your lease, you will need to discuss how much extra these will be. The cost of power especially can start to add up over the year. It is just something to consider when comparing multiple locations.

Not all marinas will come with wifi, those that do may not have particularly good wifi. But, bad wifi is better than no wifi. Of course, you can set up a connection yourself with a satellite router. But this isn’t always ideal. If you do manage to find a marina to provides wifi, even if it isn’t free, this should put it at the front of the running. If you are planning on working from your boat, doing so without wifi might not be ideal or even possible.

Having good security is important. If you are living aboard your boat that is likely where everything you own is. Boats are not the hardest to break in to. Someone who is determined could be in and out of your boat in 5 minutes with everything of value. That’s why choosing a marina that’s gated, has CCTV, and even has 24/7 security is not only ideal but advised.

The Best Liveaboard Marinas in Florida

Finding the best Marina for you will depend on a lot of things, many of them were touched on above. But for the most part, it is two things. Location and price. Just like when buying a house, location is everything. Here are some of the best liveaboard marinas in Florida sorted by location. Hopefully, at least one or more of them will be what you are looking for.

The marinas are listed first by location and then by the quality. The higher up the list the marina is the better it is, not the more expensive it is. Of course, it is up for you to decide which of the marinas is best for you. If you are looking for the most job prospects, the closer to Miami the better. Finding something in South Florida is far easier than finding something in the north. You will quickly notice that when it comes to the north, your options are very limited. North Central Florida for example only has the Sea Hag Marina, in Steinhatchee, in its entire segment. Whereas there are about 20 choices for the south. There is nothing wrong with choosing to live in the north, it just doesn’t afford as many opportunities as the south does.

What is perfect for you might not be perfect for someone else. It depends so much on your budget and needs. If you are free to live wherever you choose because you work from home; then you are in luck. Some of the more northern marinas are a lot cheaper and far quieter. They offer a much more relaxed pace of life. Conversely, though, they don’t offer as many opportunities for work or play. There is more to do on South Beach than there is in the north. That’s for sure.

Remember, if water and power aren’t included in the lease you need to get an estimate before you choose a place. It may look cheaper but in the end, winds up being far more expensive when all the extra bills come in to play.

Great liveaboard sail boat. Many will tell you that it is one of the roomiest boats inside for this size of a boat. Flushdeck design allows approximately 6' headroom throughout, except about 7 ft near the companionway in the main cabin. I've lived aboard for four years, and it was like a mini apartment inside. The center cockpit allows for a nice size stateroom in the back with a full queen size bed (10" thick futon mattress with inner coil springs, is only a year old. I upgraded the anchor to a 70lb CRQ plow, with about 40 ft chain, and then rope. Helps me to sleep well at anchor knowing I won't go anywhere. Also has a smaller dansforth style anchor onboard. Pictures show interior. Rear bed sleeps 2-3 (Queen), front V-birth is roomy and sleeps two just fine, Couch in main cabin folds up into bunks for 2. We have slept 7 aboard very comfortably. 2 more can sleep in the cockpit if you add air mattresses or make cushions to lay on. About the boat: It is older, but in pretty good shape for the age. (Much better than others I looked at when buying). I sail it to the San Juan Islands about once a year for 2 week getaways. I love anchoring out in harbors. Sails are older. Main looks pretty good, but genoa looks older with a small patch that I added last year due to a tear. Probably about due for new one. I have never used the spinnaker, but it is a bright yellow and blue, symmetrical, with 3" pole I bought for $300, and I purchased a sock to use for it. Boat is sloop rigged, but has connections to add a stay, and run it as a cutter rig. I have a stay sail for it, that I believe is Engine was pulled and replaced with an inboard electric by a professional ($4,000) about 5 years ago. it is 36V (6 golf cart batteries). It pushes the boat about 5-6 knots, but at full speed only lasts about an hour. Batteries are 6 years old though, and if replaced with higher volume you might get a lot more. (Or add another bank). It is great for getting in and out of marinas, but for longer trips, I use a 15 horse outboard on the back which is included. I think the impellar went out on it though. I ran it a couple months ago and it wasn't pumping water. I would consider replacing it if I kept it this boat. I have also considered putting a diesel back in for long cruises down to mexico. All plumbing, etc. still seems to be there for a diesel. There is an 8 ft inflatable RIB dinghy that hangs from davits off the back. It has a 6 horse mercury, that is 1-1/2 years old and still under warranty. Great for getting around in bays when at anchor. (I go to the San Juan's a lot). I was going to sell separately, but will include if full price is paid for the boat. Offers below full price won't include the dinghy or smaller outboard. I will sell them separately to recoup some of the difference or keep it for lake fishing. Dodger seems to have been replaced with a frame that is 7" too wide. I had planned on taking a little out of the middle, but please assume that there is no canvas over cockpit. You can have the dodger that I have, but it won't fit as is. Will need to be made smaller. (Material is very good though). Hot water heater was replaced last summer with an 11 gallon stainless (electric) model. Great for multiple showers. I have used it 24 hours after power shut off and still hot. I have a Honda generator that I used to run for the water heater and microwave when at anchor, and to charge the house batteries every couple days. I intend to keep the generator though. I bought it used for under a $1,000 though, so they are easy to come by. Not much in the way of electronics. I have a hand held GPS, hand held (waterproof) VHF, and depth finder up on deck, that are all only a couple of years old. The main VHF is mounted below, but is older, and I never used it, because I was always up above. Refer seems to stop getting cold sometimes and then after I tap on temperature sensors inside, it sometimes starts working again. Haven't figured out if it is a loose wire, or not. There is also a small dorm sized freezer in one of the lockers. It runs off of 110V. Stove is a 2 burner propane unit on gimbals. Has an oven. 2 ea 40 gallon water tanks (80 total). 17 gallon diesel tank in case you put diesel engine back in it. You can buy a used one for a couple thousand. I am currently about 400 miles away, so it is either buy unseen, in which case I will drive there to meet after deposit is made. Or, I will be up in the area the last week of the month to show it if it is not sold yet. Feel free to email to make arrangements to see it. I intend to have it sold this month, even if I have to take less than asking price. Current moorage is $412/mo. It is an awesome small harbor/bay and small marina with great facilities (laundry, rec room available for watching games or entertaining, exercise room, full showers, etc. You can see downtown Seattle skyline from the middle of the harbor. People anchor out there all the time. There is a ferry nearby that goes to downtown Seattle. Or, it is about a 45 minute to 1 hr sail with a 10 knot wind. You can live-aboard if you make arrangements with owner of marina, but he may want a little more money.

This is a turn key boat loaded with upgrades and electronics. I've owned this boat for three years and it has been the most reliable boat that I have ever owned. This boat looks and runs beautifully however I just don't have time enough to use it so I'm reluctantly putting her on the market. This is a true live aboard vessel with as much space as a two bedroom apartment. Engine Package She's powered by two 6-71 turbo charged Detroit Diesel's rated at 450 HP each. The boat and engines have 1250 total hours and run perfectly. For perspective, Detroit diesel recommends upper end refreshing between 10,000 and 20,000 hours so these engines have a long way to go before then. The generator is a 7KW diesel Westrebeke which also runs perfectly. Cabin The cabin is beautiful and has three air conditioners for added comfort. There has two staterooms and two bathrooms with sink, head units, and showers. The salon has a full leather couch, love seat, and recliner and all of the window shades can be lowered providing a clear view port, forward, and starboard. The dining area converts into an additional sleeping area and the galley has a new refrigerator, a stove, oven, microwave, trash compactor, dish washer, laundry dryer, sink and waste disposal. The stereo system has speakers in the cabin, patio area, and bridge. All of the upholstery and carpeting is in excellent condition. Deck The patio area has entrances aft, port, and starboard and the custom soft top is completely removable to create a completely open patio deck desired. The bridge has seating for 10 people and has a sun pad just up and behind the helm seats. The bow area also has seat cushions across the entire window area. Electronics This boat has a full array of electronics including Radar, GPS, VHF radio, auto-pilot, depth finder, and a hailer ( two-way loud speaker). Also at the helm are windlass power anchor controls and remote search light controls. Hull The hull is in very nice shape. The gel coat is original and has a nice luster. The teak has been finished with 15 coats of varnish and should be protected for years to come. The bottom paint was refinished 2 years ago and is in good shape. The hull is damage free. At about 50' length overall and 16' beam, it is big enough to live on comfortably but small enough to cruise and get good moorage. Its Port Orford Cedar planked hull on white oak frames is solid and does not leak. In the 70's or so Seawolf was refitted as a charter yacht, cruising from Puget Sound to Alaska, but all of the original military equipment and lines remain for a great "steam-punk" look. Starting at the bow, there is a chain locker, then a porcelain head with porcelain sink and original door, accessible through the captain's berth, which will sleep two (that like each-other) comfortably, in addition to, two hang-up closets, 6 large drawers, many shelves for storage, a curved beam ceiling, ceiling hatch and 4 portals windows. Up 3 steps to the helm, which has a fold down map/charts desk, a sliding outside door on each side, large windshield and side-glass. Floor access hatches to engines and a scuttle to the fly-bridge and a curved beam ceiling. Down 3 steps to a large galley featuring the original diesel cook-stove, military issue GE fridge, double booth and large dining table, 4 portal windows and two fold out windows, curved beam ceiling, walk in pantry with porcelain sink, stainless steel countertop and double bowl sink, drawers, cabinets and under sink storage. Just off the galley is the aft berth, with a folding bunk arrangement, converting easily to either a couch or two bunk-beds, spacious, cool closets and cabinet storage, a portal and opening window, a separate head, equipped with sink, cabinet space and roomy shower, complete with the continued curved beam ceilings. Just off the aft berth, up a couple steps and out the wood panel door, with original brass hardware, to a semi-enclosed observation deck, (aft) open on 3 sides with a full roof and enclosed half wall below and beam ceiling. The fly bridge is also semi-enclosed with full windshield, side windows and open in the back with a large open upper observation deck. There is also a nice for deck with exposed frames and cool woodwork plus 4 large built in deck boxes. The boat has had a lot of TLC paintwork done on the exterior but is not finished. The twin engines are Chrysler Hemi's but they along with the rest of the machinery have been wet during a partial swamping and neglected, so plan on it needing the works to cruise again.This is a big project but it is also very sound, extremely unique and well worth effort. It would not take much to make a fun live-aboard or a get-away cabin (floating or on the hard).
