Rent a Yacht for a Weekend | Complete Guide | Nautical Trips

How to rent a yacht for a weekend.

Rent a yacht for a weekend can be a great way to make your next vacation extra special, giving you a taste of luxury on the water. Yachts are available in many places around the world, so wherever you decide to spend your weekend, there is likely to be an option available to rent a yacht for a weekend near you.

Most rental companies cover most major yachting areas in Europe and America. If you see something that looks like it might fit what you need for this weekend’s escapades, don’t hang about – get in touch with them today!

Here are some useful tips:

Some providers will only allow their rental yachts to be used between certain times or days of the week. When it comes to the extras, such as parking and gas, be sure to check what is included in the price of renting a yacht for a weekend before you sign up. The last thing you want is a nasty surprise when you arrive with your friends or family!

Sure it’s easy enough to go online and find a great deal on a rental yacht for a weekend in a fantastic location, but if they do not allow pets at all, then that could be a huge drawback for some vacationers. It would only take one party animal refusing to leave their furry friend behind when everyone else wants to spend time together for this option to be off the table.

In order to avoid any disappointment during planning for your next getaway, make sure that there are no hidden pet fees attached to any yacht you are thinking of renting.

When is the best time to rent a yacht for a weekend?

rent a yacht

The most popular times for people to rent a yacht for a weekend are in the spring and summer months when days are longer and there’s more chance of getting away for a week without having to deal with bad weather. If you’re planning on going somewhere exotic though, then why not always go during the off-season!

This will allow you to take full advantage of being able to see animals that aren’t visible during busy times – plus, you’ll have far less company around your chosen resort! If this sounds like your kind of thing, then be sure to look online at rental yacht companies as soon as possible so that you can get a head start on planning.

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht For a Weekend?

On average, a yacht rental costs between $15,000 and $35,000 per week. Yachts less than 80 feet in length fall into this price range. If you’re looking for a bigger yacht, from 80 to 120 feet, you can expect to pay between $35,000 and $80,000 per week. Catamarans are even more expensive to rent, with a week in a catamaran longer than 80 feet costing between $40,000 and $100,000. The cost of your charter also depends on whether you want a crewed charter or a bareboat charter.

Consider Rental Yacht Insurance For Your Trip

rent a yacht for a day

One of the risks, when you rent a yacht for a weekend, is that it will be damaged during your rental period. It can happen, especially if you take novice sailors out on it and they don’t know what they’re doing! Luckily, many yacht rentals come with some type of standard insurance included already – this usually covers small scratches and damage to internal fittings and fixtures.

If you want to avoid any possibility of having to pay for damages to the exterior then consider buying extra insurance just in case. There are many Luxury Yacht Charters companies, who offer cover for things like emergency assistance, medical care, and theft from their yachts – so it might be worth knowing about them before you go.

How do you ensure the rental yacht is in good condition?

luxury yacht rental

The last thing you want on your vacation is to be stuck on a rental yacht for a weekend with broken toilets or furniture – this can ruin what would otherwise be a fantastic getaway! One of the main ways of ensuring your rental yacht will be in top working order is by being sure that whoever owns it has had it checked out thoroughly, perhaps even within the past month or two.

This way, there’s less chance that something will break down while you’re using it. You should also ask for proof of insurance so that if anything does happen, it will be covered under their policy rather than being your problem!

Amenities included are another important factor when considering how to rent a yacht for a weekend:

What kind of rental yacht amenities will you have access to?

rent a private yacht

Amenities vary from one rental yacht company to the next, and even between different yachts. Ask what kind of equipment is included in your yacht’s rental price – such as whether or not you’ll have access to satellite TV, WiFi, and other luxuries like toilets with running water. Clean towels should also be provided as well as clean sheets (if sleeping on the yacht).

If you’re keen on cooking up meals at sea then ask whether or not there are any kitchen appliances provided; this could save you extra money if you only plan on packing things like bread and sandwich fillings! It might also be checking how often staff will come onto the yacht to clean it up for you – this way, you can rest assured that you won’t be left with a dirty yacht at the end of your trip.

What is included in renting a yacht for a weekend budget?

yacht charter rental

The price of renting a yacht for a weekend will vary wildly depending on what kind of location, model, and length of time you are planning to rent it out for. This means that no two prices will ever be quite the same; however, there are some general trends that might dictate something like whether or not insurance is included in the fee.

For example, if you’re going with a company such as Bezop then prepare yourself for a slightly higher price due to their more luxurious models being available – but this also means that they have fewer restrictions attached to them which can allow you to have your perfect getaway!

Once you’ve looked into all of the above, then it should be much easier for you to decide how to rent a yacht for a weekend. Plus, when in doubt remember that there is almost always someone online at Bezop who will be happy to answer any questions or concerns that you might have about renting their yachts!

Rent a Yacht for a Week

For the adventure of a lifetime, why not rent a yacht for a week to get away and enjoy yourself with those special people in your life. When you rent a yacht, you really can have it all – culture, relaxation, and celebration – all while exploring some of the most beautiful places in the world.

A yacht charter allows you to explore an entire region rather than just one specific resort or town. Since your accommodations travel with you, there is no need to pack up each time you move, and you won’t have to worry about getting your group to their next destination. Best of all, you will have VIP treatment from beginning to end of your charter; you won’t have to compete with hundreds or even thousands of other guests like you would at a resort or on a cruise ship.

When you rent a yacht, your charter broker will work closely with you to create a custom itinerary based on what you and your group desire. Adults can savor menus that rival those of five-star fine dining establishments, while the kids can enjoy their favorite foods. For fun on the waves, many yachts come with an excellent selection of water toys and sports, allowing you to try your hand at something new. If unique experiences are what you crave, your yacht rental can take you to natural wonders, cosmopolitan hubs filled with arts and culture, or a secluded cove where you can pretend you’re the only people in the world.

Why Should I Rent a Yacht for a Week?

1. Shorter charters charge a premium

It is a common misconception that it’s more economical to charter a yacht for less than a week. In fact, all charters that are shorter than a week charge a premium on their rates. If you are working within a specific budget and your timing is flexible, you should be able to find a full week charter within your price range.

2. A weekly yacht rentals offer enough time to explore new destinations

Spending a full week on a charter vacation gives you an opportunity to enjoy all of the yacht’s amenities while exploring your destination. You’ll be able to see the sights, experience the culture, sample the local cuisine, and really explore everything that each stop on your itinerary has to offer.

Unlike a resort, which is fixed in one location, a charter yacht can move to satisfy your whims – a gourmet beach picnic on a deserted island, fine dining at one of the world’s top-rated restaurants, club-hopping until the sun comes up, or scuba diving to a famed shipwreck. Your charter can take you from complete seclusion in the morning to vibrant, exciting nightlife to end your day.

A week-long charter really allows you to do it all. A Mediterranean destination will take you to museums, galleries, and archaeological sites. A Caribbean adventure will have you shopping from local artisans one day, and at chic designer boutiques the next. For a family yacht charter , you can travel to one of the world’s top aquariums or water parks.

Can I Rent a Yacht for Less Than a Week?

Yes! Although 7 nights aboard a yacht is the ideal amount of time for a charter vacation, many boats will accept shorter charters, and you’ll likely pay a surcharge for any charters under a week. In select destinations, such as the Caribbean, yachts will offer charters starting at a minimum of 3 nights, while Mediterranean charters tend to prefer week-long charters. Just keep in mind that with a shorter charter, you will have to pick and choose your activities and excursions, and will likely have to sacrifice something that you or someone in your party really would like to do.

What Day of the Week Does the Charter Begin?

Your charter can begin and end on any day of the week, as determined at the time of your booking. Charters typically begin and end at noon. Some guests like to fly in early in the morning on the day that their charter starts, while others will fly in a day or two earlier and spend time at a nearby hotel or resort.

Whether you want to rent a yacht for a week and take your family for a vacation of their lives, or whether you want to bring your closest friends for a fun and relaxing week away from it all, a yacht charter is your perfect vacation choice.

This is a vacation that serves up an ideal pace and tempting opportunities to either kick back and enjoy the scenery or “drop anchor” and head to shore for a while. Tempted? Here’s what you need to know about vacation boat rentals, along with a few handy hints as to the best destinations for on-the-water escapes.

Things to know about vacation boat rentals

The inviting interior living space on a modern houseboat

If you’ve decided to enjoy your next vacation on the water, there are a few things to know first. Read on for some top tips to ensure smooth sailing and a memorable experience.

What are vacation boats like?

Many vacation boats to rent in the USA fall into the category of houseboats – these floating vacation home rentals offering ample living and sleeping spaces, along with sun-drenched decks, full kitchens, and a water slide, of course. If you decide to go a little more upmarket, you’ll be able to enjoy amenities like hot tubs and jet skis, too. Floating homes and yacht charters can also be considered when planning a getaway on the water.

Are captain’s credentials needed?

If you opt for a traditional houseboat for your next boating vacation, then you won’t need any prior experience to take on the captain’s duties. On the contrary, a quick boating lesson is more than enough to see you navigating in confidence. On the other hand, if you decide to rent a yacht, then you’ll need to prove you have the necessary qualifications from the American Sailing Association – either that or rent a skippered yacht.

How much does it cost to rent a vacation boat?

The cost to rent a boat varies according to several factors, not least where and when you plan to enjoy your getaway but also how long you want the boat for. An overnight boat rental is going to set you back a lot less than a weekly boat rental, for example. Similarly, the cost of boating vacations also depends on how luxurious you want to go – the superyachts of this world commanding a hefty price even for an overnight rental.

Top destinations for vacation boat rentals

A houseboat enclave in the California city of Sausalito

The US is not exactly short of places to enjoy a boating vacation, though there are some firm favorites. Here are three of the top spots for boating vacations around the country.

Vacation boat rentals in California

The Golden State boasts oodles of exciting destinations for boating vacations you won’t forget in a hurry. Head first for Sausalito, home to some of the oldest houseboat enclaves in the country. Most of the boats here are permanently docked, though that just leaves plenty of room for checking out the city’s studios, shops, and galleries. If you’d prefer to do your exploring on the water, Shasta Lake , with its 400 miles of sumptuous shoreline, makes an excellent choice for boating breaks.

Vacation boat rentals in Kentucky

Heading to the Bluegrass State for your next boating vacation? The double delight served up by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley ensures you won’t be disappointed. The former is known for its rewarding sports fishing and exciting lineup of water sports, while the water park in the latter makes it an equally popular pick for summer rentals. In between the two, the Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area offers plenty of reasons to explore on land too.

Vacation boat rentals in Florida

Boat rentals in Florida are a tried-and-tested way to discover the Sunshine State – and, whether it’s a charming houseboat on the wildlife-rich St. John’s River or a sleek yacht in sultry Miami, there are countless options on the menu. Cocoa boat rentals, as well as those from Fort Lauderdale, are ideal for exploring Florida’s east coast, while a yacht rental from either of those launch spots gives you enough oomph to get to the Florida Keys and beyond.

Who Goes on a Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

amalfi coast beyonce

The cultural heartbeat of the rich and famous in the summertime, the Mediterranean has long been welcoming the jet set to its sun-drenched shores. Well-to-do hedonists and socialites enjoy the beach club buzz, designer boutiques and glittering throng of exclusive events found in hotspots like the South of France and Monaco, where some of the most important dates in the calendar year like the Monaco Grand Prix and Cannes Film Festival also take place.

Equally, with an outstanding array of tranquil beaches, bays and inlets to explore, the Mediterranean is also a veritable nirvana for families or those simply seeking serenity on their yacht charter vacation.

History and Culture

Ancient ruins at sunset in charter location greece

The Mediterranean sea is connected to the Atlantic Ocean, bordering more than 22 different countries, and over 3,000 islands, the largest two being the Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia.  Its name comes from two Latin words: 'Medius” (Middle) and “Terra” (Earth/Soil), roughly translated as the center of the Earth, and the sea itself is thought to be more than 5 million years old.

In terms of Mediterranean culture, there isn't a one size fits all approach — each and every country in the region has their own. But we can say that there are some overarching themes: an appreciation of the finer things in life being one of them: of nature and of cuisine.

Types of Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

A luxury crewed  yacht rental vacation in the Mediterranean is without a doubt the best way to lap up the natural splendor of this magical region, offering you access to a dizzying array of splendid spots far from the typical tourist trail.

With an extensive selection of vessels available to choose from, the perfect yacht for you and your charter party is destined to be out there. Unsure whether a crewed motor yacht charter, sailing yacht charter, or in some cases, a gulet charter will work best for you? We've laid out the main aspects to consider before making a final decision.

Motor Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

range of charter motor yachts docked at portofino, italy

A crewed motor yacht charter  in the Mediterranean is the epitome of luxury. With seven-star amenities and hotel-serviced living coupled with a completely unrivaled level of privacy, it's no wonder a motor yacht has evergreen appeal. Uncover awe-inspiring that are only accessible by boat, and experience what it's like to have your own floating palace.

There is a huge variety of Mediterranean motor yachts available, from 100m superyachts with all the latest charter-focused amenities to small speedy weekend cruisers, or somewhere in between. But do keep in mind when selecting your motor yacht that slips here are in high demand during the summertime, which means it's more likely you will spend time at anchor.

As for yacht types, those with planing hulls are perfect if you want to zip through locations at speed quickly. However, they are usually less stable at anchor.

Displacement and semi-displacement hulls are slower and make up most of the global charter fleet, They are more comfortable, voluminous, and more stable with at anchor stabilizers.

Sailing Yacht Charters in the Mediterranean

Selecting a luxury crewed  sailing yacht charter in the Mediterranean is a wonderful choice for guests looking for a slower vacation pace, where you will be wooed by the sailing yacht's old-school charm. Plus, with most sailing conditions in the Mediterranean being extremely favorable, typified by calm seas and light winds (apart from the Meltemi at certain times in Turkey and Greece), this is absolutely a sailing paradise.

And with an extensive selection of catamarans, monohulls and racer sailers available, it won't be difficult to find a charter sailing yacht in the Mediterranean that will meet your requirements.

Gulet Charters in the Mediterranean

Turkish Gulets blue water cruising

In  Turkey  & Croatia you also have an additional charter option: the possibility of renting a gulet  with a full crew. Gulets are traditionally Turkish-built wooden motor sailor yachts which are usually much larger in volume than your average sailing yacht, with an abundance of open-plan living spaces.

Turkish gulet yachts are less expensive than other charter vessels of the same size, and can often offer all-inclusive or semi-inclusive packages, meaning you don’t need to worry about additional expenses such as food and drink. They also normally include a standard number of cruising hours per day.  Plus, their crew are often local to the region that they cruise in, meaning they can double as tour guides and can provide a lot of valuable expertise.

You can visit Greek Islands on your Turkish gulet charter vacation, but you will need to embark and disembark in a port in Turkey unless it has a Greek Charter Licence - which is very rare.

Gulets are not available in the West Mediterranean cruising areas.

How Much Does It Cost to Charter a Yacht in the Mediterranean?

The average price of a motor yacht or sailing yacht rental in the Mediterranean will depend on several factors, including the vessel's age, type, crew, as well as the duration of the vacation and whether it is high or low season.

With so many options available, there’s something to suit every type of budget. For convenience we have listed the average prices for motor yacht and sailing yacht charters in the Mediterranean below;

  • For motor yacht rentals in the Mediterranean, prices can range from $31,541 to $1.6m per week, plus expenses
  • For luxury sailing yacht rentals in the Mediterranean, prices can go from $20,491 to $532,784 weekly, plus expenses

One aspect to keep in mind is that there are important distinctions to be made between the average costs for West Mediterranean and East Mediterranean yachting vacations. While exact costs can vary from yacht to yacht, typically, West Mediterranean yacht charters will involve newer, larger vessels and include a high-quality, international workforce, and therefore tend to usually incur higher prices. Meanwhile, East Mediterranean yacht charters will usually use older vessels and feature highly knowledgeable local crews.

When is the Best Time for Mediterranean Yacht Charters?

Traditional colourful Greek fishing boats in Pythagorion port, Samos island, Greece

The best time for a yachting vacation on the Mediterranean is between May and August, although weather is still pleasant in the shoulder months of April and September, with some East Mediterranean locations experiencing high temperatures well into October (Croatia, Turkey, Greece).

Yacht charter guests in the Mediterranean during these months can expect mellow seas, cloudless skies  long, sunbaked days and low rainfall.

However, if you are looking to evade the crowds and the heat, avoid July and August.

Where Should I Begin My Mediterranean Yacht Charter?

iconic yacht rental destination french riviera

France is by far the most popular starting point for the classic "Mediterranean milk-run charter" route (Saint Tropez to Portofino), with this term coined in the industry to reflect the most celebrated and chicest locations along the Côte d'Azur.

The best place to begin a Mediterranean yacht charter is in Nice for itineraries along the coast and towards the Italian Riviera, with the majority of guests flying into Nice Airport before being chauffeured to its port or Antibes. Cannes Vieux Port (which is a mere 30-minute drive from Nice's Airport) is also popular if beginning further west towards Saint-Tropez .

Ibiza is also a popular starting point for Balearics charters, while Positano and Ajaccio are useful embarkation ports for Amalfi Coast and Corsica yacht charters respectively.

For East Mediterranean itineraries, Athens is a popular choice for charters around Greece's Aegean archipelagos, with the highest concentration of yacht rentals, while superyachts cruising the Ionian and Adriatic Coast tend to be flexible, with charters embarking from any number of popular destinations; from Venice  in Italy down to Corfu  in Greece's Ionian Islands.

Popular Marinas and Moorings in the Mediterranean

Aerial view of charter yachts moored in port

There are many marinas in the Mediterranean, but there are some, especially within the French and Italian Riviera that are highly coveted such as St Tropez and Portofino, which means mooring costs in this region in the summer tend to be highest and availability is often extremely limited.

If you would like to spend a night in port while on your charter yacht in the Mediterranean, be sure to make this clear to your crew or your charter broker well in advance, as there is strong competition for slips.

Below is our selection of some of the finest and most popular marinas in the Mediterranean:

French Riviera Marinas

  • Vieux Port de Cannes  and Port Pierre Canto in Cannes, both cater to all sizes of yachts and with 1,200 berths.
  • Port Cogolin  in Saint Tropez, which boasts 1,600 berths for yachts of up to 50m/164ft, and Port Vauban in Antibes, which caters to yachts up to a 165m/541ft LOA.
  • Port de Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat , located near the idyllic village of Villefranche-sur-Mer. This marina has 560 berths that can accommodate yachts up to 60m/197ft in length.

Italian Riviera Marinas

  • Marina di Loano , not far from the French border can accommodate 900 vessels up to 77m/252ft in length.
  • Porto Mirabello , in La Spezia caters to yachts of up to 100m/328ft, and a perfect point for exploring the region's jaw-droppingly pretty Cinque Terre.

Amalfi Coast Marinas

  • Marina di Stabia  is one of the most popular places to begin a yacht charter on the Amalfi Coast, and boasts luxury facilities and the capacity to host yachts measuring up to 100m.

Marina Piccola  in Sorrento has 280 berths, catering to yachts measuring up to 40m.

Corsica Marinas

  • Port Ajaccio Tino Rossi , the capital's largest marina, has 300 slips and caters to yachts of up to 100m/328ft
  • Port Calvi , located in the northwest with 150 berths for yachts up to 65m/213ft LOA.
  • Port de Plaisance Saint-Florent  ,a pretty marina tucked away in the north with 920 slips, and in close proximity to vineyards and the stunning Saleccia beach.

Popular Marinas in Greece

Kos Marina , close to the enchanting island's old harbor, this marina has a capacity for up to 250 berths with a maximum length of 80m.

Gouvia Marina , Corfu's most popular, situated in a secluded bay, with mooring of yachts of up to 80m, and boasts 1235 slips.

Athens Marina , accommodating 130 slips measuring up to 130m. Provides plenty of amenities on land, including a helipad service.

Where to End a Mediterranean Yacht Charter

Superyachts moored in Bonifacio port in Corsica

Portofino is one of the best places to disembark your Mediterranean yacht charter if you are embarking on the typical week-long yachting vacation along 'the milk run' (incorporating destinations in the French Riviera and Ligurian Coast). Guests usually take a helicopter back to Nice or Genoa airport.

For two-week-long Mediterranean charter vacations, Bonifacio is one of the most popular places to finish a private yacht charter in the Mediterranean due to its outstanding natural beauty. It boasts one of the most stunning port entrances in Europe, bordered by soaring limestone cliffs on one side, and on the other its impressive medieval old town teeters on a hilltop. Upon leaving, guests are chauffeured to nearby Ajaccio international airport.

For East Mediterranean charters, Athens is a popular disembarkation port, as well as Porto Montenegro and Dubrovnik or Split on the Adriatic Coast, all of which offer good transport links with international airports.

Mediterranean Yacht Charter Q&A

We advise booking your Mediterranean yacht rental at least three months in advance to ensure you get the yacht you desire. The longer you leave it, the fewer choices you will have to rent in the Mediterranean.

One of the wonderful aspects about renting a yacht in the Mediterranean is the exceedingly long season. For example in West Mediterranean locations like France, Spain and Italy, the best time to visit is usually from May until September. This balmy weather extends to well into October in East Mediterranean destinations like Greece, Croatia, Montenegro and Turkey.

For your Mediterranean superyacht charter, you will need to provide a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee as a deposit. This is payable once the contract has been signed.

When booking a Mediterranean yacht rental, do keep in mind the costs that aren't included in the base rate, namely VAT and the APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance). The APA is usually paid in advance of the charter and is commonly set at 30% of the charter fee. This allowance covers expenses such as fuel, berthing, food and drinks, as well as any special requests.

Please consult your yacht charter broker for any other costs you may need to factor in for your yacht charter in the Mediterranean.

Austin boat renters facing issues ahead of Memorial Day due to diminished lake levels

how to rent a yacht for a weekend

Diminished lake levels in Austin have caused problems for boat renters during what is expected to be a busy Memorial Day weekend.

Lake levels at locations across Austin and Central Texas are in various stages of flow, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Dashboard . Most water sources around Austin appear to be at normal or steady levels, though some, including sections of the Colorado and Blanco rivers, are measuring much below normal for this time of year.

Effects of decreased lake levels have been felt by Jacob Williams, owner of ATX Boat Rentals. The company normally operates on Lake Austin and Lake Travis, and it typically allows guests to board its boats at the Mansfield Dam Park Boat Ramp.

More: Here are 10 most popular boating locations in Texas and rules to follow

However, that ramp has been closed since September 2023 due to low water levels, according to the Travis County Parks Department. That has forced Williams, his company and his customers to pivot ahead of Memorial Day.

"It's forced us to move everything," Williams said. "We have to tow boats now over to Lake Austin all the time instead of just going to my house (and) hopping on boats that are already in the water."

What are the lake levels at Lake Travis?

Lake Travis is about 48 feet below its normal level, according to Go Lake Travis , an informational site. That's much lower than its level at this time in 2022 and 2023, according to LakesOnline.com .

What water levels are needed to boat safely?

With water levels down in some lakes and rivers across Central Texas, it's important to know how much water you need to safely operate a boat. A variety of factors go into determining whether a body of water is deep enough to operate a boat in, but the biggest things to pay attention to are your boat's weight and the shape of its hull.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure any body of water you're boating on has at least one foot of water in it, according to BoatPowered.com . Even then, boaters should use depth monitors to ensure the water they're in is deeper than that to avoid problems.

Lake Austin to experience influx of boaters this summer

Williams said having to switch around logistical operations hasn't had a major effect on his business, but with more people being forced to use fewer lakes to rent and drive their boats, some of the lake options are becoming clogged.

"When nobody can get their boats on Lake Travis, it causes Lake Austin to be more and more packed," Williams said. "Lake Austin will always be an option, but it's not fun being on a smaller lake that's extra packed."

The city of Austin is enforcing its annual ban this Memorial Day weekend on the use of personal watercraft, wet bikes, motorized surfboards and similar devices on Lake Austin. Kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and other nonmotorized devices are allowed.

No plans for Memorial Day? Here are 5 things to do around Austin over the holiday weekend

Texas Parks and Wildlife warns of low lake levels

A record 3.6 million Texans are expected to travel for Memorial Day, signaling a possible boom for tourism activities in the Lone Star State. That aligns with ATX Boat Rentals' busy season, which typically begins around May and extends into September, Williams said.

That figure, coupled with Texas having more square miles of inland waterways than any other state and nearly 560,000 registered boats, means the state's waterways are likely to be packed for the long weekend.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is warning boaters of potential hazards on waterways. A year ago, the state saw 13 boating accidents during the Memorial Day weekend, resulting in two boating fatalities and two drownings.

To avoid those types of accidents, the department is reminding boaters to operate at safe speeds and keep an eye out for low water areas and submerged objects, among other things.

Is Travis County in a drought?

Not really, but some parts of Central Texas are. Eastern parts of the county are not experiencing any drought conditions, and the western half is mostly experiencing abnormal to severe dry conditions.

Counties northwest of San Antonio are experiencing an extreme drought, the worst drought level in the state.

To check your county's drought stage, check out the U.S. Drought Monitor .

San Diego boat-rental sites spark concern, lawsuit over safety verification

The city advises renters to use brick-and-mortar businesses, with safety top of mind after a 12-year-old paddleboarder was hit by a jet ski and killed on mission bay last summer, by shelby bremer • published may 23, 2024 • updated on may 23, 2024 at 6:44 pm.

As San Diego heads into the summer season, boat traffic on the bays is about to pick up. With that comes a warning on illegal boat rentals that pose a safety risk out on the water.

“I feel that we have an existential threat by having a dangerous situation on the bay,” said Andy Kurtz.

24/7 San Diego news stream: Watch NBC 7 free wherever you are

Kurtz has owned Seaforth Boat Rentals on Mission Bay and San Diego Bay for more than 40 years, tasking his staff with safety checks for every boat and every rental.

“Every time we send somebody out, it’s like a whole script of all of these points that we need to hit,” Seaforth employee Payton Cheatwood said. “It’s important that we all know what we’re talking about, so that way, whenever we send a renter out, they’re also equipped with all the knowledge.”

Get San Diego local news, weather forecasts, sports and lifestyle stories to your inbox. Sign up for NBC San Diego newsletters.

Kurtz said he’s concerned about the rise of third-party websites that enable people to rent boats directly from owners. Many of those sites don’t have a mechanism to verify all the legal requirements to rent a vessel, like proper insurance and commercial licensing.

Now, Kurtz is suing one of those sites – Getmyboat.com – to try to force them to put those checks in place.

Getmyboat said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation, but as to questions over its safety verification, a spokesperson for the company said in a statement that it is a “platform for boat owners and boat renters to meet each other and engage directly on rental terms and conditions, requirements and coordination.”

Flames burn through Carlsbad home, roads closed

“Getmyboat strongly encourages safety and compliance verification for owners and renters meeting on its site,” the statement reads in part. “Each boat owner renting their boat through Getmyboat confirms the responsibility for compliance of their vessel in their jurisdiction.”

Kurtz said renting without requiring those verifications poses a risk on the water and presents a challenge for law enforcement.

“It's Whac-a-Mole,” Kurtz said. “They're hiding in plain sight. You can't stop them if there's a million of them out there," adding, "we're trying to cut off the top of the funnel so there's less of these things out there, which makes their enforcement easier."

San Diego Police and San Diego Lifeguards impounded 185 vessels in 2023, officials said, up from 119 the year before but down from the 230 impounded in 2021.

The city advises renters to use brick-and-mortar businesses, with safety top of mind after a 12-year-old paddleboarder was hit by a jet ski and killed on Mission Bay last summer.

There’s a hearing on Kurtz’s lawsuit in October, but he said time is of the essence as the summer boating season kicks off.

“It's your safety, right?” Kurtz said. “It's absolutely the safety of the person that is ... out there on the water. That's what's most important.”

Boating Safety Tips as Memorial Day Weekend Approaches

A s Memorial Day weekend draws near, marking the unofficial start of the summer boating season, it’s always a great idea to revisit safety measures to have a safe and enjoyable experience on the water. Experts from Getmyboat , the world’s largest boat rental marketplace, have highlighted some safety tips and etiquette for seasoned sailors, first-time boaters, and charter guests.

Always Wear a Life Jacket

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to be safe on the water is by wearing a life jacket. According to the United States Coast Guard , a staggering 76% of boating fatality victims were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident. Always ensure that there are enough life jackets onboard for all passengers, and verify this with the captain if you’re chartering a boat.

Check the Weather

Before heading out, always check local weather conditions. Sudden weather changes can make boating conditions dangerous. Postpone your trip if rough winds or thunderstorms are expected.

Follow a Pre-Departure Checklist

Proper preparation can prevent problems. Check that your boat is in good working order before departure, you have all necessary equipment onboard, and inform someone on land of your plans. “By taking the extra time to go through a checklist before you leave the dock, you can save yourself a lot of headache and hassle while also having a safer boating experience,” noted Val Streif, a spokesperson for Getmyboat.

Use Common Sense

Operate at a safe speed at all times, especially in crowded areas. Be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, which have been placed there for your safety. Keep a proper lookout and stay alert at all times.

Develop a Float Plan

Always let someone else know your float plan. This includes where you’re going, how long you’re going to be gone, and how many people are aboard. This information can be crucial in the event of an emergency.

With Memorial Day Weekend, NH gets ready for sun, surf . . . and tourists

A lifeguard chair on the beach on a sunny day

Seasonal businesses across New Hampshire are opening their doors this weekend – unfurling flags, polishing ice cream scoopers, waxing surfboards – as the Memorial Day holiday marks the unofficial kickoff to summer.

From campgrounds to amusement parks to boat rental services, business owners say they’re excited for the tourist season to get underway. The warm weather of the past week gave the holiday weekend a bit of an early boost.

“We started to feel the summer crowd earlier this week: Tuesday, Wednesday,” said Josh Clelan, owner of the Marker 21 restaurant in Wolfeboro. “As soon as the sun came out, we started to see the volume increase.”

Along Lake Winnipesaukee, the sunshine has prompted many people to put their boats in their water and opt for outdoor dining.

On the Seacoast, some local surf shops are already busy. Noah Zwartendijk, with Summer Sessions in Rye, said last weekend was a holiday in Canada, which brought in extra visitors.

“We opened last weekend but didn’t really tell anyone because we just wanted to test the waters to see how busy it would be, and we had a great turnout,” he said.

State officials are predicting 4.8 million visitors to New Hampshire this summer, or 3% more than last year. And they estimate tourists will spend $2.6 billion in New Hampshire this summer.

All of New England is expected to be busy this weekend: AAA predicts a record number of New Englanders – nearly 2 million – will be traveling over the course of the Memorial Day holiday. That’s up about 4% from last year and higher than it was before the pandemic. Most of those people – 1.8 million – will be traveling by car.

“We've never seen the amount of automobiles that are going to be on the road over the weekend,” said Dan Goodman, who manages public affairs for AAA Northern New England.

He reminded drivers to check things like tire pressure and fluid levels before heading out. He said some trips could take nearly twice as long as normal.

“Pack your patience,” he said.

As the weather warms, local and state safety officials are also warning about the dangers of impairment while driving, boating, swimming and more. Pat Murphy, chief of the New Hampshire State Beach Patrol, said folks who plan to drink should stay away from the ocean waters.

“Last year we had over 9,000 alcohol violations; to start off this year we have already had 1,200,” Murphy said. “Please leave your alcohol at home. The ocean, swimming and alcohol do not mix. It creates a more dangerous situation.”

Murphy said one of their biggest recommendations is for beachgoers to swim when lifeguards are on duty. Starting this Memorial Day weekend, he says lifeguards will be staffed at Hampton Beach, Jenness Beach and Wallis Sands.

Communities around New Hampshire will be marking Memorial Day in lots of different ways.

The Danville American Legion is hosting a Memorial Day Parade Luncheon on Saturday. A Veterans Parade and Picnic is also planned in Newfields on Saturday.

Parades are planned in lots of cities and towns, including Portsmouth , Nashua , Rochester , Londonderry , Lebanon , Concord , Center Harbor and Fremont .

In Dover, the Woodman Museum is also hosting a Memorial Day service in partnership with city officials. This year's event will be dedicated in memory of Captain Jack Casey and Captain Ann Darby Reynolds , both from Dover.

Casey was one of five Marines who died in February when a helicopter they were flying in crashed during a training exercise near San Diego. He was 26 years old.

According to her obituary, Reynolds was one of just four Navy Nurses to receive a Purple Heart during the Vietnam War. She died in February, at age 84.
