Glacier Bay 2640 Renegade

  • By John Brownlee
  • Updated: September 21, 2007

glacierbay_2640.jpg

Glacier Bay’s latest version of its popular 26-foot catamaran is a split console, walk-through design. This layout should prove versatile enough to suit everyone from hard-core tournament types to weekend family fishermen and cruisers. There’s something for everyone!

Consider the bow area; it has lots of room, and serves equally well as a casting platform or a sun lounge. A large, deep anchor locker at the bow holds all ground tackle, and the shallow tray aft of that is ideal for dock lines. Farther aft, in front of the twin consoles, you’ll find a large transverse fishbox to hold the day’s catch.

The stylish, swept-back, tempered-glass windshield opens in the middle for bow access, but provides great protection and visibility when closed. The seating around the bridgedeck consists of a lounge seat that wraps around aft. The aft portion of this seat on our test boat housed the optional 18-gallon live well.

The spacious head compartment is accessed through the portside console. Inside, you’ll find a true 12-volt marine head attached to a 15-gallon holding tank. Aft of the head is a huge, wide-open storage area.

Helm and Cockpit Amenities

Back on deck, the helm area boasts a clever use of space. The helm seat sits atop another insulated box that can be used for fish or dry storage, and there’s also an optional refrigerator that fits in here. The helm itself tilts aft for rigging and wiring access.

The 2640 has a very spacious cockpit that serious fishermen are sure to appreciate. There’s a rigging station at the aft end of the bridgedeck, complete with a fresh water sink and a large flat surface on which to rig baits. The molded unit contains plenty of shelves, too.

A diamond non-skid pattern is molded into the cockpit sole to provide sure footing, and there is lots of room for fighting fish. Four rod racks are located beneath each gunwale, and there are four Lee rod holders in the covering boards. At the transom bulkhead, corner boxes hold the boat’s batteries on one side, tackle drawers on the other. A walk-through area on the centerline lets you easily access the engine platform, and this space is just the right size to accommodate a 94-quart Igloo cooler.

We tested the boat off South Florida, courtesy of Len Renn¿ of Seven Seas Yacht Sales, Glacier Bay’s Ft. Lauderdale dealer. The test boat sported twin 130-hp Hondas, and the ride was exemplary. Glacier Bay has cat hulls down to a science, and we spent an hour running the boat hard into the short offshore chop. No matter what we did, we couldn’t make it pound, and we didn’t get wet. What more do you need? The big Hondas pushed us along at 25 mph at 4000 rpm, and hit 34.3 mph wide-open at 5600 rpm.

The 2640 exhibited Glacier Bay’s usual excellent level of fit and finish, and its solid construction will provide years of reliable service. Glacier Bay also piles on the standard equipment, including goodies like cockpit coaming pads, the head, a fresh water system, tilt helm with hydraulic steering, rod holders and a Bimini top. The cherry on top is that this is a good-looking boat. It appears that the days of bulky, boxy cats are over!

Glacier Bay 2740 Renegade Review

  • By Sport Fishing Staff
  • Updated: September 13, 2012

Glacier Bay 2740 Renegade

Glacier Bay 2740 Renegade

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: With a glance at the 2740 Renegade from Glacier Bay , my mind swirled with possibilities. This dual-console catamaran can serve well as a fishing, diving or family-cruising platform. Yet my eyes quickly shifted to fishing features like the cockpit with plenty of elbow room for a crew of four and a standard hardtop with six rod holders.

TARGET MARKET: Glacier Bay has maximized dual-console appeal with elements like a walk-in head compartment in the port console with five feet of headroom and solar-powered ventilation, a portside L-lounge with seating for four, a wet bar abaft the lounge, and seating for four in the open bow. Everyone will appreciate the fold-down aft jump seats. The Glacier Bay displacement hull offers luxury of its own, knifing cleanly through wind chop. But don’t expect blazing speed – powered by a pair of Suzuki DF150 four-stroke outboards , we maxed out at 39.6 mph. The 27-footer banks in slightly on low-speed turns, but leans outward when brought about at higher speeds.

FISHIEST FEATURES: I adored the drawers below the wet bar for stowing lures and terminal tackle. And the bow area houses a pair of 125-quart insulated fish boxes that drain overboard. This is an addition to a pair of 100-quart insole fish lockers in the cockpit. The forepeak features a bow pulpit with a pair of anchor lockers, in case you want to set up on a wreck or reef, though I’d also order the optional Lewmar free-fall windlass. Four flush-mount rod holders adorn the cockpit gunwales, with horizontal storage under the gunwales for rods, gaffs and boat hooks. A 15-gallon live well is nestled into the wet bar, but for serious fishing, ask the dealer to install an after-market bait tank on the swim platform between the twin outboards.

THE LAYOUT: The bow offers lots of fishing room, but watch the four-inch step up – I tripped on it going forward. Going aft, a door in the middle of the transom lets you access the swim platform. The deluxe captain’s seat has a flip-up bolster that converts to a leaning post, with an angled footrest below the console to brace yourself while driving. The full windshield (with a hinged walk-through to the bow) protects captain and crew from spray. The 2740 features Teleflex SeaStar steering with a tilt-and-lock helm. The dash provides enough space to flush-mount a 12-inch multifunction LCD display.

FINAL IMPRESSIONS: While hardcore saltwater anglers might dismiss a dual-console design, the boat-buying public has latched on to the versatility of this layout. If you’re an angler who needs family approval to get a new boat, a dual-console such as Glacier Bay’s 2740 might be a great choice. Not only does it offer creature comforts like a freshwater shower, removable dining table and 150-quart cooler under the lounge, it also offers a remarkably stable and seaworthy ride with a range of 430 miles, giving you the ability to reach the fish anywhere they’re biting.

Power Catamarans

A word about power catamarans.

O ur POWER CATAMARANS are hard to beat for speed with comfort. In a rough water chop, the air-cushion between the hulls really smooths out the ride. These boats carry heavier loads than other boats and are very stable, making them ideal family boats for fishing, skiing, or cruising. They turn flat with virtually no banking, and will handle more power than other boats in the same length. For ultimate performance, twin motors are recommended. The cockpit offers exceptional space that you must see to believe. All of our cats are extremely strong and designed for rugged use. Take a close look at the photos and drawings. These are truly unique boats; once you have one you will use it as a standard for ride and room that most other boats will not measure up to.
