Welcome To Los Angeles, California

First of all, there’s nowhere quite like Los Angeles because with its beautiful Pacific beaches, mountains, bike paths, yacht rentals, cruises, and nightlife with no end, Tinsel Town, has little shortage of pretty much anything. Even more, Beverly Hills with its sprawling mansions and the seriously high-end shopping spots along the world famous Rodeo Drive.

Natural Los Angeles Splendor

Also, Angelenos are busy riding waves, chartering their yacht, hiking, staying close to nature, or keeping in shape by climbing the Santa Monica Stairs . Most noteworthy, despite Los Angeles having such a large head count, Los Angeles is a city intertwined with Mother Nature. As a result her dense, elaborate neighborhoods rest along golden beaches, her city streets lead up to flower-carpeted hillsides, and huge, deep-blue skies are an Instagram filter for sunsets during your yacht charter or yacht rental made especially for you.

A Place for Foodies

Because there is nothing better than the food scene! Los Angeles has AMAZING restaurants and while it may have less Michelin stars than San Francisco, Los Angeles certainly makes an argument for more of its own winners with cuisines to die for. Try Michaels in Santa Monica or Mercedes Bar & Grille in Marina del Rey or Venice Beach and you will not be disappointed. Made famous from I Love You Man try California’s best tacos at James Beach in Venice. Los Angeles has the country’s most authentic Korean and one of the nation’s largest concentrations of vegan restaurants. Lastly, dirty martinis in a speak easy type setting, to brews crafted to perfection, Los Angeles offers otherworldly adventures worthy of the most discerning taste buds.

Creative Hub

Another thing is the creative hub. Dreams are quite serious in Los Angeles from actors and musicians to techies hoping to code their way into the next new thing online. Also, Los Angeles is a home to Hollywood, a city where imagination is almost mandatory. Therefore you will find yourself wrapped in layers of legend and history. As a result, annually countless dreamers land at LAX making their way to the streets of Los Angeles vying for their piece of the American Dream. Almost everyone is a writer, a producer just trying share their dreams with Los Angeles and someday, the world. Seems like the result is a whirlpool of creativity, edgy Venice art spaces, iconic rock venues, and critically acclaimed concert, all fueling a city addicted to the love of art and fame.

Architectural Gems

Los Angeles’s obsession with creative expression extends to its architecture. After all, this is where movie palaces look like Chinese temples and ancient Egyptian tombs, where concerts halls twist and curve like steely cartoon characters, and where soda bottling plants look like landlocked ocean liners. Indeed, Los Angeles celebrates architectural diversity with astounding gusto. From storybook Hollywood abodes and Silver Lake modernist prototypes, to downtown theaters channeling the Palace of Versailles, no other American city delivers such a thrilling mash-up of architectural styles, statements and role models…often on the very same palm-studded street.

However, there’s more to Los Angeles than famous names, with suburbs such as Malibu and Venice Beach boasting cultural gems as well as quirky shops and interesting boutiques. The former is also home to the picturesque Malibu Pier, which has a gorgeous organic restaurant at the end, and the magnificent Getty Villa, crammed with Grecian gems.

TESTIMONIALS

For a fantastic and memorable experience….

Let us create the perfect package for you!

The yacht, USCG licensed captain, deckhand, fuel, and landing fees (some fees are paid directly by charterer but are reflected in the total price listed).

Complimentary waters, soft drinks, ice, (2) paddle boards, BBQ grill, beach towels, and a fully equipped kitchen.

Gratuity, if you feel our captain and crew did an exceptional job the industry standard is 15-20% of the charter cost. We understand it’s not always easy to remember to tip after a long day in the sun, much less to have remembered to bring cash, so we are happy to coordinate the tip with you during the booking process or after the charter is complete where it can be applied to a card.

Fuel Surcharges – Pricing listed is based on cruising at 8-kts which is a very comfortable speed allowing guests to enjoy their time on the yacht. However, if you’d like to get somewhere quickly to allow you more time at the destination our yachts are capable at cruising at faster speeds but a fuel surcharge may apply. Pricing varies based on yacht, speed, destination, and fuel prices so please reach out if you’d like to discuss this option.

12 guests, while the yachts themselves are large enough to accommodate much larger groups, maximum occupancies are based on US Coast Guard and local licensing restrictions and all charter vessels are restricted to a maximum of 6 or 12 unless they are a COI’d vessel (large party boats).

No, the maximum occupancies are based on US Coast Guard and local licensing restrictions. So, unfortunately, the maximum occupancy listed for each yacht is final.

However, you can always go big and charter multiple yachts at the same time to the same location and your groups can enjoy the same experience even though they aren’t on the yacht all together.

Tobacco: Smoking/vaping tobacco/nicotine products is not allowed anywhere on Starting Over.

Marijuana: Charters are regulated by the USCG and are subject to federal laws so these products are still considered illegal and cannot be brought onboard under any circumstance.

Yes, we grew up on the water and can’t think of a better way for kids to enjoy the outdoors. We welcome adults, adults that act like kids, actual kids, toddlers, babies, buns-in-the-oven… if you’re comfortable bringing them, we’re comfortable having them.

If you are considering bringing kids, we would like to assure you that we take safety incredibly seriously as do our captains and crew. We abide by all of the safety regulations, including life jacket requirements, so you can charter our yachts with peace of mind.

No, we love our animals and hate the idea of an experience like this without them. Not everyone feels like we do though, so out of respect for all guests, we ask that you leave your pets at home (ESAs included).

Yes, all our yachts are inspected annually by the USCG to ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulation.

*Please no Red Wine or Cranberry juice. If you drink, do it responsibly*

Is Bella kid-friendly?

Absolutely, guests of all ages are welcome.

NO.  Just below your seats are 350 gallons of diesel fuel, plus we want to keep the boat nice for a long time to come, and burn holes are hard to repair.  You can vape responsibly.

What about weed, man?

Since we will be on federal waters and marijuana is not federally legal, that's a big NO .  You can leave the drugs at home... you're going to have a great time without them.

44' Bayliner Motor Yacht available for an epic water day in Long Beach

The ABSOLUTE BEST!!!!! My family and I had the most AMAZING time and experience ever! Adrian was by far the most funnest and greatest captain. Not only did he make you feel safe but he also makes you feel right at home! If I could leave 100 stars I would. Thank you so so much again Adrian! - Your Prima for life!☺️✨☀️

21' Duffy Electric boat in Marina del Rey, California

We had an amazing time on the Duffy!! It drove really well, by far the nicest one we’ve ever rented. Chris was very friendly and helped us with around the Marina. We had four kids with us and he had life vests for them, and helped us show the kids where the seals were which was a big highlight for them. I can’t recommend this enough!

Decided to surprise my boyfriend with a boat ride around Newport harbor for his birthday. Overall, it was an awesome experience and we all had such a great time! Josh & Maja were super friendly and informative; as they gave us parking info, suggested sights to see, and they even gave us extra towels to keep warm! I will definitely be booking with them again!

We had an amazing time! We drive anlmost 3 hrs to enjoy our very first yacht ride for my birthday celebration🥳🤩.. Alex was very attentive to me, my sisters & friends! He made sure we got the full experience & was a whole vibe, even took some of our photos & videos for us! Thank you so much & we are definitely coming back this summer🩵

Duffy Cruise | Wine, Cheese, Charcuterie, Sea Lions & Free Photos/Videos

Frank and capitain Shaun were both very accommodating! Booked the trip last minute and they went above and beyond to try to make it happen. The capitain was so funny and a good time. The charcuterie board, wine and water offered was such a lovely touch. I brought my sister and her bf while they were visiting. We had a beautiful time! Highly recommend.

Fleur

A wonderful experience from docking to docking, we were provided with so much guidance and information in regards to the boat, the harbour and even suggested sights we should see it was a seamless transaction from the start. The boat was impeccably kept and super roomy with space for all of us and a picnic, it ran beautifully and we will definitely be using it again

How to Get to Tortuguero: The 6 Transportation Options

If you are wondering how to get to Tortuguero, Costa Rica, you’ve come to the right place!

Tortuguero is a bit different than a lot of towns in Costa Rica because it is not directly accessible by car or shuttle. Yeap, there are no cars in this village.

Instead, it is possible to get here by plane from San Jose or by boat from La Pavona.

We have visited Tortuguero several times and have figured out the 6 best ways to get here.

So let’s go through each option and find the best route for you!

Tortuguero Transportation at a Glance

Step One : Drive with rental car, take a private shuttle, take a shared shuttle, or take a public bus to the La Pavona water taxi launch near the Caribbean Coast.

Step Two : Take a water taxi to the town of Tortuguero (takes one to two hours)

Step Three : Walk to your hotel in town

*Alternatively you can skip steps one and two and opt to take a domestic flight to Tortuguero *

Want to save all the hassle of planning? You can book a 3-night getaway to Tortuguero from San Jose with transportation included .

Boat from La Pavona to Tortuguero

The small village of La Pavona serves as the gateway to Tortuguero .

Unless you opt to take a domestic flight directly to Tortuguero, you will need to take a public or private water taxi from La Pavona.

I will explain all the different ways to get to La Pavona in the next section. But first, once you get to La Pavona, here is what you can expect.

Public Boat Timetable

To Tortuguero : 6:00am, 7:30am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:30pm.

From Tortuguero back to La Pavona : 5:00am, 7:00am, 9:00am, 11:00am, 1:00pm, 3:00pm.

Tickets cost between ₡3.000- 5.000 ($5-10) per person depending on the amount of luggage you have.

This ticket can not be purchased ahead of time. There is a ticket office at the dock where you need to purchase this in person.

In our experience, it occasionally books out so it is best to arrive early and expect that you might have to take the next boat if it is too full.

Travel Time

The boat ride takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes during the rainy season . It can take up to 2 hours if the water level is very low in the Tortuguero canals due to low tide or dry season.

La Pavona has a small basic restaurant, a small shop with things like ponchos and bottled water, and restrooms that cost about 50 cents to use.

Additionally, it is possible to take a private boat service from the La Pavona dock. This will cost a lot more (up to about $20 per person one way), but this is the best option if you can’t get a spot on the public boat.

The one private service I know of is called Fersa. They run daily at 9:15am, 11:15am, 12:45am, 3:15pm, and 4:15pm.

If you’d like, you can contact them, their Whatsapp number is +506 8831 6401 or you can reach out to them via  their Facebook page.

I don’t suggest paying for anything ahead of time. I do not know if they have a secure booking system.

Additionally, you can always contact your hotel in Tortuguero. They deal with this on a daily basis and can most likely organize boat transportation for you.

You really do not want to have to spend the night at La Pavona. There is not a single hotel here, so you would have to sleep in your rental car.

In other words, make sure you are on the last boat for the day or you are kind of stuck.

However, I have read that there is free WIFI and they keep the bathrooms at the dock open all night. So, if you do get stuck here and need to sleep in your vehicle, it’s not THAT uncomfortable.

Things to Consider

  • It is best to bring as little luggage as possible
  • If possible, opt for an oversized backpack instead of a suitcase
  • It can be a bit difficult to get in and out of the boat if you have mobility issues

Now let’s go through each transportation option to find one that is best for you. …

Option #1: Rental Car & Boat

Best for:  People who want the flexibility of having a car for onward travel plans

Your first option is to drive your rental car to the secure La Pavones parking lot and then take the water taxi to Tortuguero.

Pros of Rental Car

  • It is the most flexible way of getting to the La Pavones lot
  • It is the easiest way to continue your onward travels to your next destination

Cons of Rental Car

  • You will be paying to keep your rental car at the La Pavones lot for the number of nights you are in Tortuguero. So, not only are you paying for a rental car you aren’t using but you will also be paying the parking fee.
  • The drive here is a bit of an adventure (especially if coming from San Jose)

Rental Car Info

You do not need a 4×4 to get to La Pavona. However, an SUV with decent clearance is suggested due to the hilly and winding roads.

We suggest renting your car with Adobe Rent-a-Car. They are our favorite local rental car company that is upfront with their prices and has excellent customer service.

We also have a 10% car rental discount plus other great perks from Adobe to pass on to you.

Check Availability and Book Your Rental Car with 10% Discount

Parking Your Rental Car at La Pavones

There is a fenced-in and guarded parking lot at the La Pavones boat terminal.

The parking lot is massive, so there is no need to pre-book tickets.

It costs 6,000 colones per night (about $12) to leave your rental car here. You can pay for this upon arrival.

The Drive from San Jose

From the San Jose International Airport , it takes approximately 3 hours to drive to La Pavones Harbor.

However, just keep in mind that it could potentially take a lot longer depending on the traffic you hit in San José and the road work that seems to inevitably always be happening on Route 32.

The drive here from San Jose is a bit intense. You will begin by driving around the outside of the city. The roads can be very confusing and a bit scary if you aren’t familiar with driving here.

Once out of the city, you will continue on Route 32. This road is a highway in the sense that there is a decent amount of traffic and cars go fast. But, it is probably way more curvy than a lot of highways you are used to.

Toward the beginning of your drive, you will have to pay a toll before going through a tunnel. You can pay in  US dollars or colones .

I like Route 32 because it is a cloud forest and always has a bit of moody feel to it.

After about one hour on Route 32 you will come to the town of Guápiles. Here you will take a left and continue northwest towards La Pavones.

This part of the drive goes through several small towns. It is mostly a low-stress route and I think it is very pretty.

The last part of the drive is unpaved, but the road is well-matted down and is easy to drive.

The Drive from La Fortuna

The drive from La Fortuna is nice and mostly stress free. It will take 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic.

You will head east out of the main downtown area onto Route 4. Just stay on Route 4 for about 1.5 hours until you meet up with Route 32. On Route 32 you will experience a bit more traffic.

In Guápiles, turn left and continue north east towards La Pavona.

The Drive from the Southern Caribbean Coast (Cahuita & Puerto Viejo)

From Puerto Viejo or Cahuita it will take about 4 hours to drive here depending on the traffic.

You will drive north on the main road until you reach the city of Limon. Traffic can get more intense here (this is the main Caribbean Coast export terminal so there are a lot of 18-wheelers).

You will turn left to head west on Route 32 until you reach the town of Guápiles. Turn right in Guapiles to head to La Pavona.

Things to Note

  • Waze is the best free app for driving directions in Costa Rica.
  • Put La Pavona, not Tortuguero, as your destination in your GPS.
  • Leave as early as possible in the morning so that you will have plenty of time to catch a water taxi even if you hit traffic.

Option #2: Shared Transfer

Best For : Solo travelers or couples. People who don’t want the stress of driving or the price of flying.

A shared shuttle service is a good option because everything is taken care of for you.

These transfers will take you by shuttle and then by boat to the village of Tortuguero.

This takes the stress out of having to park your car at La Pavona or organize the boat ticket on your own.

  • Shared Shuttle from San Jose to Tortuguero
  • Shared Shuttle from La Fortuna to Tortuguero
  • Shared Shuttle from Puerto Viejo to Tortuguero

Option #3: Flight

Best For: People who would like the fastest and easiest route to Tortuguero. Not on a tight budget.

Sansa Airlines offers direct flights to the Tortuguero Airport from the domestic terminal at San Jose International Airport twice daily.

Price: This typically costs about $120 per person.

Flight Time: The flight takes about 30 minutes

Considerations:

  • The domestic terminal in San Jose is not located in the main international airport. It is a 5 minute walk away. Give yourself a few hours between your international and domestic flight.
  • If you don’t do well with small planes, this is not for you.
  • If you want amazing aerial views, this is for you.
  • If you are short on time, this is the fastest way to get to Tortuguero.
  • If you are on a tight budget, this option is not for you.

Check Flight Prices and Availability

Option #4: Packaged Tours to Tortuguero

If this all seems a bit overwhelming to you, you might want to consider taking a multi-day tour to Tortuguero from San Jose.

This is a great option if:

  • You don’t want to rent a car
  • You want to take the stress out of planning everything yourself
  • If you are flying in and out of the San Jose International Airport and want to add a visit to Tortuguero on to the beginning or end of your trip.

Option #5: Private Transfer

Best For : A large group or family

With a private transfer, you will take a comfortable bus just for your group to La Pavona. From La Pavona you will need to organize the boat on your own.

We work exclusively with Adobe Transfers. They are a trustworthy company with excellent drivers.

From downtown San Jose to La Pavona will cost a few hundred dollars.

This seems like a lot, but it is for the whole bus (which fits up to 14 passengers). So, if you are a big group this is most likely the most cost-effective option.

Get a Private Transfer Price Quote Here

Option #6: Public Bus to La Pavona from San Jose

If you are on a very tight budget it is possible to get to the La Pavona dock by local bus. However, there is no direct route and it can get a bit complicated as far as timing everything correctly.

You will need to take the bus from San Jose to Cariari and then switch to a bus that goes to La Pavona.

San Jose to Cariari

  • Depart from : The Caribbean bus terminal (Caribeños or Gran Caribe) in Barrio Tournon.
  • Note : Later departures won’t reach Cariari in time for the last bus to La Pavona. Take the 6:30 am or 9:00 am bus to be safe.
  • Ticket Information: Available at the terminal counter for approximately $3.50 / ₡1600.
  • Route Length : It should take about 2 hours to get to Cariari, but it could take a lot longer with traffic

Cariari to La Pavona

  • Departure Point: Buses to La Pavona wait at the Cariari bus terminal. Look for guides or locals at the terminal for assistance. In rare cases, check for buses outside the terminal.
  • Departure Times: 05:00h, 09:00h, 11:30h, 15:00h.
  • Ticket Information: Purchase tickets on the bus from the driver for about $2.20 / ₡1100.
  • Additional Note: La Pavona is the last stop on this route.

More Info About Tortuguero

  • You don’t need to spend a ton of time in Tortuguero. I think that two nights (four at most) is enough time to see everything.
  • However, I definitely think it is worth visiting even though it is a hassle to get to. It is just such a unique place.
  • The best time of year to visit Tortuguero is between July and September . This is the dry season on the Caribbean and the best time to see the main attraction of the area (turtle nesting).
  • One of the best things you can do in Tortuguero is to take an early morning guided canoe ride through the Tortuguero River canals . You’ll likely see a wide variety of wildlife in this protected area. If you do this you will need to pay for entrance into the Tortuguero National Park as well as your boat tour. I suggest taking advantage of that admission and take a hike through the national park in the afternoon.
  • Tortuguero is a small town that doesn’t have any cars. You will need to walk everywhere.
  • Keep in mind that a lot of the more high end hotels are not located directly in downtown Tortuguero, but on the shore across the river. To get into the downtown area most of these hotels provide a boat service. A lot of the mid-range to budget-friendly hotels are directly in town.
  • There are no ATM’s in Tortuguero and not every place takes credit card as payment. So, make sure to get some cash in USD or Costa Rican colones ahead of time.

For more info check out our complete guide to Tortuguero with the best hotels, restaurants, things to do, and more!

Conclusion: Transportation to Tortuguero

In conclusion, getting to Tortuguero can be an adventure, but overall I think it is worth it. The village is amazing and the boat ride feel like you are going to Jurrasic Park.

Now that you know all of this, which transportation option will you choose?

If you have any questions about planning your trip don’t hesitate to ask in the comment section below. We are always happy to help you out!

California politicians are exploring ways to make you happy

California politicians are thinking up ways to make you happy

Are you happy?

If so, why? If not, what would make you happier?

And this is a somewhat of an unusual question: Can the government play a role in your happiness?

These are some of the big questions a new committee of state lawmakers want to explore.

Last week, the state Assembly’s recently formed Select Committee on Happiness and Public Policy Outcomes held its first informational hearing, seeking to understand what makes people happy — and how government action could make Californians happier. There were more questions than answers.

How can politicians actually measure happiness?

“It’s an eternal question,” Rep. Anthony Rendon said. “And one [that’s] overdue in terms of us thinking about it in a formal way.”

The Lakewood Democrat and former long-serving Assembly speaker is chairing the new committee during his last year in office.

At this point, some of you may be rolling your eyes at the thought of a “California Happiness Committee.”

Rendon gets this. But what bothers him most is those who misunderstand the purpose of the committee and seek to inject their own, shall we say, alternative ideas. Think group yoga and feeling circles.

“This is not New Age bulls—,” Rendon told me this week. “We have two decades of very serious quantitative and qualitative data … indicators that are real and meaningful.”

Understanding the happiness deficit

It turns out, happiness is on the decline in the Golden State, according to the Public Policy Institute of California. In a September survey , 58% of adult Californians reported being “pretty happy,” 16% said they were “very happy,” and 26% said they were “not too happy.”

The core of California adults who say they’re “pretty happy” has been stable, Mark Baldassare, statewide survey director and the Miller chair in public policy at the institute, told the committee last week. But fewer adults in the state reported being “very happy” compared with previous surveys, and more said they were “not too happy,” according to Baldassare.

Rendon also noted research from Oxford University and the United Nations, presented in the annual World Happiness Report , which ranks countries based on the level of happiness reported by their people.

The rankings developed for the report are based on survey data from the Gallup World Poll, which includes a section asking individuals to evaluate their lives and emotions. Those responses are then weighted based on country demographics, then averaged over three years of responses to create an annual ranking.

Researchers also highlight six variables they say influence happiness around the world:

  • Gross domestic product per capita.
  • Social support.
  • Healthy life expectancy.
  • Generosity.
  • Corruption.

The report’s authors argue that the “effectiveness of the government has a major influence on human happiness of the people.”

The 2024 World Happiness Report was released Wednesday . According to its calculations, the 10 happiest countries are:

  • Netherlands.
  • Luxembourg.
  • Switzerland.

Happiness in the U.S. dropped in all age groups, researchers said. The U.S. ranked 23rd, down from 15th in last year’s report.

Happiness was especially low among younger U.S. residents. The report parsed out data showing just the happiness reported by younger respondents (those under 30), which put the U.S. down in 62nd place. Compare that with happiness reported by older respondents (those 60 and older), which put the U.S. in 10th.

Happiness, loneliness and the kingdom of Bhutan

The happiness committee hearing lasted more than 2½ hours and included testimony from a documentary filmmaker, a minister, the mayor of Fremont, Calif. (dubbed “the happiest city in America” by WalletHub ) and a representative from the kingdom of Bhutan.

The small South Asian country inspired much of the recent research into happiness because of its long focus on it as a key metric of government performance . The country’s leaders enact policies to “create the right conditions that will allow people to pursue happiness,” said Phuntsho Norbu, consul general of the kingdom to the United States.

Panelists agreed strong social connections — among family, friends and local communities — are vital to a happier society. That’s not exactly an epiphany, but it comes at a time when many people in the U.S. are feeling more alone than ever.

Last year, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released an advisory on the national epidemic of loneliness and isolation , which he said “represent profound threats to our health and well-being.”

“Social connection can be a proactive approach to living a fulfilled and happy life,” the advisory reads, adding that strong social ties can also enhance education outcomes and work performance, and help make communities “healthier, safer and more prosperous.”

One committee member, Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo, a Democrat representing the Santa Clarita Valley, took note of the “ripple effects of happiness” that panelists connected to the ongoing mental health crisis, especially among younger Californians.

“You don’t have kids walking into schools with guns to shoot people if they’re happy,” Schiavo said.

So what could government actually do to foster happiness?

Building a stronger social safety net could be key, Rendon said, noting that some of the countries with the highest happiness rankings also ensure services including universal healthcare and livable wages. It would also require a shift in what lawmakers prioritize.

“[We] need to realize that if everybody was fully housed and fully employed … that wouldn’t necessarily mean everyone was happy,” he said. “If social connections are the most important thing, then we have to think about how our society looks, how our workplace looks, our schools, how our communities look.”

Now we want to hear from the tens of thousands of Californians who subscribe to this newsletter for an unscientific but hopefully insightful reader survey.

This brings us back to that initial question: Are you happy?

What brings you happiness — or what would help you become happier?

And what role do you believe state and local governments could or should play in our happiness levels?

Take this survey to share your California happiness with us. You could see your and fellow readers’ responses in a coming edition of Essential California.

What's in store for 2024 in Canal Fulton? New events, paddle boats, pickleball courts

Free concerts and music festivals will return to the St. Helena Amphitheater in June under a new nonprofit organization called K8 Event Team. Last year, the concerts and festivals attracted hundreds of people to the amphitheater at 123 Tuscarawas St. in Canal Fulton.

  • The Canton Repository asked leaders in each of Stark County’s 17 townships, 11 villages and six cities to share some highlights about what's in store for 2024 in their communities.
  • Canal Fulton will offer a total solar eclipse and new Memorial Day event.
  • New paddle boats and pickle ball courts also will be available this year.

Editor’s note: The Canton Repository asked leaders in  each of Stark County’s 17 townships, 11 villages and six cities  to share some highlights about what's in store for 2024 in their communities.

The responses include the return of some family-friendly events, a variety of new businesses and some much-needed improvements to longstanding structures. We will be presenting these community highlights to you throughout the upcoming months.

CANAL FULTON – New events , paddle boats, pickleball courts and a large water tower are coming to Canal Fulton this year.

Here is what’s in store for 2024 in the city of roughly 5,300 residents:

Towpath to Totality eclipse event set for April 8

The city is partnering with Stark Parks to host activities for residents and visitors who travel to the city to view the total solar eclipse, which is when the moon will block the face of the sun as it passes between the sun and Earth.

The Towpath to Totality  event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 8 at  St. Helena Heritage Park at 123 Tuscarawas St. NW.

The Great Lakes Science Center has provided a telescope with solar filters for eclipse observation and free solar eclipse glasses, which will be available first come, first served. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., free eclipse-themed activities will be offered, such as crafts, educational presentations and an obstacle course.

The partial solar eclipse will begin in Canal Fulton at 1:58 p.m. The total eclipse will begin at 3:14 p.m. and last  about two minutes .

Roughly 200 parking spots will be available at the park. Overflow parking will be available at the Lock 4 Trailhead.

Paddle boats available to rent

The city has purchased two paddle boats that will be available for rent as early as April.

Users can take the paddle boats, which can be rented, from the Canal Fulton Canalway Center at 125 Tuscarawas St. NW south to Lock 4.

The paddle boats will be available whenever the Canalway Center is open, which is typically on the weekends in April and the first half of May and then daily from mid-May until fall. City Council has yet to set the rental rates for the paddle boats, whose cost was offset by a $4,000 grant from the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition.

To reserve the paddle boats, call the Canalway Center at 330-854-6835. Walk-ins also will be accepted if a boat is available.

New Memorial Day event planned

A free event to honor the eight local military members who died during service and to celebrate the 70 th anniversary of the Canal Fulton Community Band will be held on May 26.

Mayor Joe Schultz said the event will include a dinner followed by a concert by the Canal Fulton Community Band. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. and the concert will follow at 7 p.m. The event will be held at Northwest High School’s Puffenberger Hall.

The dinner, which is being prepared and donated by Clean Harbors, will include hamburgers, hot dogs and french fries. During the concert, a biography of each honored military member will be read and then followed by a song that the band felt reflects the honoree’s personality.

Schultz said tickets, which are free, will be available for up to 300 people. People can reserve their tickets beginning in late April by calling or visiting City Hall.

Other upcoming community events include: Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday; Jack Cullen Towpath Trail Trout Derby on April 27; Memorial Day parade on May 27; Father’s Day Car Show on June 16; Olde Canal Days from June 27 to 29; Haunted Canal Fulton from Oct. 17 to 19; and the Electric Lights Parade on Dec. 7.

Changes coming to St. Helena concert series, festivals

Free concerts and music festivals will return to the St. Helena Amphitheater in June under a new nonprofit organization with new rules.

David Thomas, who has presented the events with city support under his for-profit company TNT Marketing LLC for the past two years, is hosting the concerts and festivals independently this year under the nonprofit organization, K8 Event Team, which is named after his music-loving niece, Kate, who died of cancer at age 19.

The concerts and festivals will continue to be free, but the cost to park at St. Helena Heritage Park will increase from $10 to $15. Alcohol will be available for sale on site this year. Coolers, dogs, canopies and tents will not be allowed.

Besides offering food trucks once again, Thomas also is partnering with WanderLust Boutique to bring the WanderLust Market and its dozens of vendors to some of the festivals. Admission to the market will be free.

Net proceeds from the festivals and concerts will be donated to the Northwest Local Schools music department to help students who may need equipment or lessons, Thomas said.

The concert series lineup is Dirty Deeds on June 8; Kings Highway on July 13; Diamond Project on Aug. 10; In The Heartland on Aug. 17; Hard Day’s Night on Aug. 24; and Jersey on Sept. 7. Each concert will be from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

The festival lineup includes the 80s/90s Festival on June 15; Dance Fever Festival on July 20; Country Rock Festival on July 27; and Country Music Festival on Aug. 31. Each festival will be from 2 to 10 p.m.

Pickleball courts coming

Following the success of the Introduction to Pickleball classes last year, the city plans to create more pickleball courts this year.

Parks and Recreation Director Chris Bundy said one of the two tennis courts at Muhlhauser Park at 853 Locust St. S will be converted into four pickleball courts. He expects the courts to be ready for this summer.

The city will again offer its Intro to Pickleball Class this year for those wanting to learn the rules and strategies or to sharpen their skills. The classes will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. May 6-7, July 15-16 and Aug. 19-20. Cost is $30 for residents and $40 for nonresidents. To register, call 330-854-2225 or email [email protected].

Westside water tower to be built

The city plans to build a 125,000-gallon water storage tank, install 6,700 feet of waterlines and add a booster station to extend water service to nearly 40 city properties along Wooster Street and for possible future expansion.

The $4.3 million water tower project , which will be located near Cherton Street NW, is expected to begin this month and be completed in fall 2025.

The project will be paid by a $500,000 federal grant, a $2.1 million grant and nearly $1 million interest-free loan from the Ohio Public Works Commission, and an $800,000 low-interest loan through the Ohio Water Development Authority.

Some Northwest High School students also have been using the water tower project in their engineering classes. Teacher Jim Shiplett said one of his classes last semester tracked the progress of the project and discussed the numerous decisions that must be made along the way, as well as how multiple teams must work together to move the project forward. He plans to use the project again at the end of the current semester.

Tighter Restrictions Coming For Airbnb, Vrbo, Other Short-Term Rentals in LA County

A close-up of a smart phone screen, specifically an Apple iPhone. A red and white company logo takes up most of the screen, with the text "Airbnb" below it in black with a small light-blue inverted checkmark next to it. The tip of a person's finger can be seen below the checkmark.

  • What hosts need to know

How will it be enforced?

What opponents say, what supporters say.

Airbnb, Vrbo, and other short-term rental hosts will need to follow new regulations by this fall for properties in the unincorporated areas of the county, which spans more than 2,650 square miles and is home to about a million people.

The L.A. County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the set of rules Tuesday, and they’ll go into effect 180 days from now, in mid-September.

The regulations aim to strike a balance between the amount of long-term housing and the quality of life in those neighborhoods, with the financial benefits to short-term rental hosts, according to a treasurer and tax collector letter to the board.

What hosts need to know

Hosts will be required to register with the county and pay an annual fee of $914.

A subsidy may be available during the first year for lower income homeowners looking to earn extra income with rentals. County officials said they planned to further discuss options for those homeowners.

Other rules include:

  • ADUs, guesthouses, vacation homes, recreation rooms, or boats cannot be listed as short-term rentals. Hosts will be limited to renting out their primary residence only.
  • Hosts cannot run more than one short-term rental in these areas at a time, and they cannot accept more than one booking per night.
  • All short-term rentals must be 30 consecutive days or less, with minimum booking requirements depending on if the host is staying on the property while guests are there.
  • A maximum of 12 people are allowed per reservation, and the rentals cannot be used to host parties, commercial events, corporate banquets, or anything with an admission fee.

If a short-term rental property is out of compliance, the host could get their registration revoked by the county, and they’d be required to cancel any future bookings and take down their listings.

For each violation, hosts may also face a $2,000 fine per day, or two times the average nightly rate charged, whichever is higher.

They can also file an appeal for fines, fees, or a notice of noncompliance with the county.

If Airbnb, Vrbo, or other hosting platforms don’t verify the short-term rental registration number issued by the county for each property, or if they don’t have it listed on all of those advertisements, the companies could be fined $1,000 per day, per violation.

Opponents argue the regulations are unnecessary and are unfair to hosts and landlords.

Michele Zack, who identified herself as a 10-year Airbnb host in Altadena, said during public comment that hosting provides income for her and her husband, who are both retired.

“We provide an important service to Altadena, which doesn’t have a single hotel room,” she said. “We are not converting apartment buildings to Airbnbs. We are not absentee landlords for party houses.”

Jeremiah Small called the rules a de facto ban on short-term rentals in a written public comment .

“This ordinance is a draconian restriction on small businesses in unincorporated L.A. County,” Small wrote in a public comment. “It is bad for residents and bad for local businesses.”

Proponents say the county needs to do all it can to protect long-term housing for residents, and short-term rentals make neighborhoods less affordable for everyone.

Andrew Davidov, who lives in District 1, said in a written public comment that un-hosted short-term rentals, which is when a host is not staying at the property with guests, takes up valuable housing that would otherwise be available to people looking to live in the area.

“The [regulations] will help safeguard housing for our families and friends who want to remain in the L.A. communities they love,” Davidov wrote in a public comment.

Newport Beach estate lists as short-term rental for $250K a month

For glam property, “the tenant is just as important as the money,” says broker Josh Altman

Newport Beach Estate Lists for Lease at $250K a Month

Wanted: renter willing to shell out $250,000 a month for a 13,000-square-foot mansion in Newport Beach’s Newport Coast.

Baja Washington, a locally based limited liability company, has listed the never-before-lived-in-house at 7 Clear Water in gated Crystal Cove, the Orange County Register reported.

The newly built Mediterranean-style estate is among the most expensive month-to-month listings in OC.

“You don’t typically see these brand-new mansions, no matter what market,” broker Josh Altman of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, whose firm holds the listing for the estate , told the Register. “Whether it’s L.A. or Newport, this is as topnotch as you will see: the best of the best.”

“Topnotch” means a three-story hilltop mansion with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

The seven-bedroom, 11-bathroom house sits on two-thirds of an acre, and comes with a circular wine cellar, state-of-the-art theater and spa with a sauna, steam room and cold plunge pool.

The dining room has a stocked wine wall. The living room has a 30-foot glass wall that slides open to the backyard’s double swimming pools, a barbecue center, fireplace and an 80-inch TV.

The basement level contains a furnished bar, lounge and billiards room.

The lease listing seeks what Altman estimates is the monthly maintenance cost of a $70 million home. The owner, who declined to comment, may also consider a short-term lease, such as three months in the summer.

Baja Washington bought the lot in 2016 for $7.1 million.

There are now 11 coastal mansions for rent in Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and Dana Point for $100,000 a month or more, with 7 Clear Water seeking the highest rent, according to Homes.com.

Last year, there was one closed lease listing at or above $100,000, which asked $350,000 a month but leased for $150,000, according to Steven Thomas, chief economist at Reports on Housing.

No such rental contracts closed between 2020 and 2022. And in 2019, only one went for $195,000 a month. Not all mansion rentals are listed on the open market or registered in public records, as many lease deals aren’t public.

Many mansion owners can be open to renting, Thomas said.

“What I’ve noticed in looking at all of the high-cost luxury leases is that in order to get those high amounts, many are actually open to renting it out for a month or two on a short-term rental basis,” Thomas told the Register. “A lot of these are furnished, which means they probably rent these out and then come back and live in them.”

Such leases are not for everyone.

“This is a big-time property, so the tenant is just as important as the money,” Altman added. “The type of person who would rent a house like this is going to easily have a worth of more than $100 million.”

LA County supervisors approve new rules on short-term rentals in unincorporated areas

LOS ANGELES (CNS) -- The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors gave final approval Tuesday to regulations for operating short-term rentals in unincorporated areas.

Under the new rules, hosts with Airbnb or Vacation Rentals By Owner, VRBO, will be required to register and pay a fee of $914 on an annual basis.

Note: The video in the media player above is from a previous report.

The county rules also restrict short-term rentals to a host's primary residence -- prohibiting the use of accessory dwelling units, rent-restricted primary residences and vacation rentals for short-term rental use.

Additionally, the regulations place restrictions on the number of guests, length of stay and types of events for short-term rentals. Companies like Airbnb and VRBO will be required to comply with the new regulations, and establish an enforcement and appeals process for customers who fail to abide by the new rules.

According to a report from the county's Treasurer and Tax Collector, the new registration program aims to strike a balance between ensuring homeowners can list their properties as short-term rentals and the preservation of long-term housing stock, as well as protecting the quality of life in neighborhoods.

The $914 fee was decided upon based on full cost recovery, including administration and enforcement of the program, salaries, employee benefits, indirect costs, services and supplies.

L.A. County plans to use $1 million from the adopted 2023-24 budget to cover costs associated with the registration program. An additional $1.7 million is set aside for year two, but moving forward the fees are expected to cover ongoing costs.

The county regulations will only impact unincorporated areas, so they will not conflict with rules individual cities already have in place. The rules also will not immediately be enforced in select coastal areas, such as Marina del Rey and Catalina Island, since those areas also fall under the purview of the California Coastal Commission, which is expected to ultimately enact rules of its own on short-term rentals.
