Yacht crew salary guide

A Nurse on board a superyacht is responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care to owners, guests and crew. The role is typically split between the nurse and Interior Department duties, namely housekeeping and laundry.

A yacht Nurse is a position typically found on superyachts over 50m in size. Generally speaking, the bigger the yacht, the bigger the medical department. For example, some yachts might have a dedicated SOLAS-approved hospital onboard and are equipped with an X-ray machine and a hyperbaric chamber. However, most yachts don’t have the luxury of a dedicated medical professional and positions such as a stewardess-nurse are far more common.

This means that the position often involves assistance from the housekeeping or service teams. Depending on the yacht owners’ health, you may be required to do certain medical duties, but otherwise, the role requires you to be on standby awaiting the need for medical attention.

Working onboard a superyacht as a Nurse requires a complete Nursing License. Usually, there are two Nurses working together onboard and sometimes a Doctor will be present on larger vessels. On average, medical facilities onboard a yacht are equipped with oxygen tanks, defibrillators, specialized medications and intravenous fluids.

What does a yacht Nurse do? | Yacht Nurse Job Description

A Nurse onboard a superyacht is primarily responsible for providing routine and emergency medical care, teaching CPR classes and performing fire and lifeboat drills. They also oversee and maintain the cleanliness of the medical facilities, keep all injury logs, and order and stock all of the medical inventory.

As a yacht Nurse, there may be instances where the yacht is miles away from the shore and a guest develops appendicitis or another condition. In this situation, it is up the Nurse to care for them until other help is available.

The responsibilities of a yacht Nurse include:

Doing physical exams

Assessing, observing, and speaking to patients

Providing emergency medical care

Administering medications and treatments, then monitoring patients for side effects and reactions

Teach CPR classes

Maintaining first-aid supplies and other inventory

Maintaining the cleanliness of the medical facilities

Keeping all injury logs

Regular refresher training and drills

Depending on the size of the yacht, you will also help the Interior Department with housekeeping and service

Soft and hard skills required to be a yacht Nurse

The role of a yacht Nurse is suited to someone who can successfully assess a medical situation by conducting a limited physical examination. As a guest-facing role, yacht Nurses converse regularly with owners and guests. Due to this, confidence and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Occasionally, the role may require you to be adaptable and care for an owner or guest with a specific medical condition, so someone who understands specific needs and can provide adequate care to the owner is also important.

The skills of a successful yacht Nurse include:

Knowledge to perform and evaluate diagnostic tests

Experience diagnosing illnesses and prescribing medications

Knowledge of preventive care strategies

Knowledge and experience of emergency medicine and care

Good interpersonal and communication skills

Critical thinking

Empathy

Ability to work independently

Ability to stay calm and collected in stressful situations

Mandatory certificates needed to work on board a yacht

All crew members regardless of position and seniority need to have a valid STCW Basic Safety Training certificate, along with a recognised Seafarers medical certificate, the most popular being the ENG1 which is issued by an MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) professional medic.

Without these two certificates, it is not possible for crew to work on board a yacht and a Recruiter will not be able to assist you in finding work onboard a yacht. For more information about mandatory certificates please visit our Mandatory Certificates Guide .

Superyachts seek medical personnel on board

A new service responds to the demand for medics, and highlights the concept of 'supernumeraries' under the mlc….

Image for article Superyachts seek medical personnel on board

In response to increasing requests for temporary medical staffing on board superyachts, MedAire is offering a service providing short-term medical personnel placement. The company now places experienced doctors, nurses and paramedics, who remain under their employment, on yachts to ensure medical care is always available to those on board.

Through its parent company, International SOS, which works with many oil rigs located in remote sites, MedAire benefits from a large database of medical professionals familiar with working in remote environments available for placement.

“Many of our clients are looking for a short term medical staffing solution," explains Steven Bates, general manager of yachting for MedAire. "As clients are traveling to increasingly remote locations, may be engaging in high-adrenaline sports and riskier activities, or may have a guest that needs extra medical care, there is now the option to add a doctor or paramedic on board for a period of time."

Bates adds that this service has been of particular interest to 60m-plus superyachts intending on remote cruising, and to charter yachts that might have guests with specific medical conditions and wish to have a medical professional on board just in case. Another popular request is for paediatric nurses, which help take the responsibility off crew when there are children on board.

Such personnel will remain under MedAire employment throughout the duration of their placement. They are not involved in the operations or safety of the vessel so they are not classed as crew but as contractors – something that is particularly important to note for those yachts in compliance with the MLC 2006. Supernumeraries, such as short-term medical personnel, have continued to be a grey area under the regulations.

Paul Grace, technical policy lead at the Isle of Man Ship Registry explains that, when the MLC entered into force, the term ‘supernumerary’ became largely obsolete as it was assumed that everyone on a yacht would either be a seafarer or a guest. “This caused confusion within the industry, so to provide some clarity on the definition of ‘seafarer’, ILO published a resolution providing guidance on various occupational groups,” he says.

“The Resolution allows Flag States to write their own regulations, and introduced a new phrase for people who principally work onshore, but who occasionally spend a short period working on a ship; ‘occasional workers’. Some categories of personnel are self-evidently occasional workers, for example surveyors, superintendents and port workers. Other categories are more open to interpretation since there is no agreed definition of a ‘short period working on a ship’.”

In light of this, a medical specialist who has been contracted to a yacht for a short term charter lasting a few weeks would most likely be considered an occasional worker, however this would have to be confirmed with the yacht’s Flag State. “The Flag State may have additional requirements for occasional workers, such as ensuring the medical specialist receives familiarisation training, is medically fit and has a contract from his or her employer,” Grace adds.

Finally, Grace cautions that if the medical specialist was to work on a longer charter or a series of charters, they may become considered a seafarer instead of an occasional worker. “The operators would have to be aware of this prior to the medical specialist joining a ship as they would then have to be issued with a seafarer’s employment agreement and have the same entitlements as the other seafarers on the yacht, including accommodation,” he concludes.

Yacht Medics Set Sail: Medical Crew Placement

medaire horizontal

MedAire, an International SOS company, launches new service to supplement medical expertise on board luxury yachts.

MedAire will now place medical professionals on vessels for clients around the world. Doctors, nurses, paramedics and specialists are available for short-term or long-term placements based on a yacht’s specific needs.

“With the continued growth in very remote cruising and activities such as more advanced diving, many large yachts are requesting to have a medically trained person on board,” said Steven Bates, General Manager, Luxury Yachts. “By the nature of some itineraries, the option to dock and see a physician may not be possible.”

“Yacht medics are particularly popular amongst our charter clients,” continued Bates. “The needs of the guests on board vary with each week and captains require a reliable source of quality medical crew so they may adequately support their guests and itineraries.”

MedAire works closely with the owner and/or captain to source, screen and recommend the ideal medically trained candidate for the vessel.

“Providing yacht medics is a natural extension of the travel safety services we provide our clients,” continued Bates. “Given our expertise in the field and global network, we are uniquely positioned to assist our clients with a seamless onboard medical solution.”

The yacht medic placement service complements MedAire’s comprehensive medical solution, including medical kits, first aid and first responder training, remote medical advice and global assistance.

“While most superyachts have a telemedicine provider, the added support of a yacht medic on board delivers confidence to crew that a trained professional is available to be the eyes, ears, and primary contact with the telemedicine service,” continued Bates.

The yacht medics referred by MedAire may also assist in managing the yacht’s medical supplies and other onboard responsibilities associated with the smooth running of a modern superyacht.

Learn more about MedAire yacht medic placement at:

Monaco Boat Show, 25 – 28 September, stand QJ01.

Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, 31 October – 4 November, Yachting Tent 704-705.

That said, if you are a Fleet Manager, or a Deputy Fleet Manager currently and feel that the lure of a prestige brand is of interest I'd still love to hear from you.

Can you offer some or all of the following; Experience – not just the years, but the knowledge gained through 'doing the hard yards'? Stability – a resume that shows professional and personal growth with longevity of employment? Gravitas – your ability to communicate to the most challenging of audience with calmness, wisdom and confidence? Flexibility – an ability to think on your feet, to proffer solutions, not just following THE process? Breadth of experience; 'Strategic overview' including Yacht Management, HR, Finance, Commerciality, Sales?

Would you be interested in; Managing and growing a team of 10 a within a multi-site set up? A self-starter / self-management role – involvement in business planning & strategic implementation of business objectives? Doubling an existing fleet of 10 yachts over the next 24 months?

Obviously, I'm looking for someone at the top of their game and a career climber, but it's that personality that will win through.

7 jobs that pay well and have a ton of hiring demand right now

  • There were about 8.8 million job openings in the US in February.
  • Insights shared with Business Insider from job sites show which occupations need workers.
  • Indeed data shows roles for sign-language interpreters can be hard to fill.

Insider Today

It's a weird job market right now, one that's characterized by — simultaneously — layoffs sweeping across knowledge industries and other sectors desperately scrambling to staff up .

Recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the rate of hires is just a little down from where it was a year ago — 3.7% in February compared with 3.9% in February 2023. Openings for jobs have dropped from a rate of 6% in February 2023 to 5.3% this past February.

Tuesday's news release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics said February job openings "changed little at 8.8 million" since January. It added that "the number and rate of hires were little changed," in addition to other areas that didn't see big moves.

For some white-collar workers , especially those in tech, it might look like a bleak job-hunting landscape.

However, plenty of jobs are in demand, from accountants to civil engineers. Amid a skilled-trade shortage , there's a plumber deficiency, according to Bloomberg — one shortage among others that are festering.

"Job postings and job openings have pulled back from their highs over two years ago, but demand for new workers is still strong in several sectors," Nick Bunker, the economic-research director for North America at the Indeed Hiring Lab, told Business Insider in a March statement.

BI reached out to career sites to see what demand was looking like. The job-search and -networking site Handshake, a platform largely for college students and recent college graduates, said its roles with the most job postings were powered by employers in government, law and politics, retail stores, energy, and education. Across industries, here are the roles with a multitude of openings, or an urgent need to hire.

Construction workers

superyacht doctor jobs

The construction industry needs a whole lot of workers to help with the housing crisis and other construction projects , and it has the job openings to match. A January analysis from the Associated Builders and Contractors found that the industry needed 501,000 more workers this year to keep up with labor demand. A news release from the association said that figure was "on top of the normal pace of hiring."

Tuesday's report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics about the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey said the industry had 441,000 open roles in February, an increase from 425,000 in January.

The Associated Builders and Contractors' chief economist, Anirban Basu, said in a press release that after winter's cooler temperatures, contractors anticipated staffing up even more: "Demand for workers should remain strong through at least the first half of the year."

Per BLS's Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, the median hourly wage was $23.72 for construction trades workers, and the median annual wage for these workers was $49,330. That's slightly above the $46,310 for all occupations.

"Jobs related to health care and care work more generally are particularly in high demand," Bunker told BI in a statement. "Job postings for Physicians & Surgeons are almost double their pre-pandemic level, while Therapy job postings are up 81%," Bunker said of Indeed's Job Postings Index from mid-March. Therapy-sector jobs could include occupational or physical therapists, for instance.

The need for these workers isn't going to decline anytime soon. The shortage of physicians through 2036 is projected to be about 140,000, per the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis .

"Since it can take over a decade of education and residency to prepare a physician, the United States should take steps now to address future physician shortages," a webpage from the Health Resources and Services Administration said.

Costs for this education can also add up. An Association of American Medical Colleges report found the median tuition for first-year students at private institutions for the 2023-24 academic year who were residents was $64,000. The median was $65,059 for nonresidents.

But it's not just physicians who could see a shortage. National Center for Health Workforce Analysis projections show registered nurses, dispensing opticians, and pharmacists could be in short supply through the next several years. Registered nurses have a relatively high median annual wage , at $81,220.

LinkedIn data also shows the need for healthcare professionals. The platform pointed BI to its most in-demand jobs on the platform . Care specialist was the position with the fastest-growing demand, based on "roles with the greatest quarter-over-quarter increase in share of paid job posts" between the third and fourth quarter of 2023, a LinkedIn blog post said. However, it was just one of six healthcare-related jobs in the top 10. Sonographer and home-health licensed practical nurse are two others that made the top 10.

Sign-language interpreter

superyacht doctor jobs

Sign-language interpreters are in demand. Indeed data compiled for BI indicates that just over 60% of sign-language-interpreter roles are hard to fill, meaning they've been on the platform for 60 days or more. According to the BLS , interpreters and translators make a median hourly wage of $25.79 and a median annual wage of $53,640.

The National Deaf Center on Postsecondary Outcomes has said that there's a nationwide shortage of ASL interpreters, even as "the need for interpreters who have specialized skill and knowledge has increased over the years as more and more deaf students pursue medical and technical fields."

Elementary-school teachers, high-school teachers, and special-education teachers were among the jobs with the most postings on Handshake over the past year.

It might be a challenge to fill teacher demand as other occupations pay better for young people. ADP's chief economist, Nela Richardson, previously told BI that "wages might discourage" young people "when they could make relatively more or see their salaries increase faster in other industries."

The median pay for elementary-school teachers outside special education was $61,690 in 2022, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is above the national median for all jobs, $46,310. The BLS added that the median pay for secondary-school teachers outside special and career or technical education was $62,360, similar to those teaching elementary-school students.

Accountants and auditors

superyacht doctor jobs

According to Handshake, accountants and auditors were two of the roles that had the most job postings on the platform over the past year.

That's not a surprise, considering the accountant labor shortage quietly sweeping the country, which could lead to accounting errors across firms, Bloomberg reported .

"Accountants and auditors are to business as those people in the black-and-white-striped shirts are to sports. We're the referees of business," Steven Kachelmeier, the chair of the accounting department at the University of Texas at Austin , previously told BI's Erica Sweeney . "Without accounting and without finance, there are no rules to the game."

The American Institute of CPAs found that in the 2021-22 academic year, the number of students earning accounting degrees fell by 7.8%, which could further exacerbate labor shortages. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , the median hourly wage for accountants and auditors is $37.50 — or $78,000 annually. This type of work is expected to add 67,400 jobs from 2022 to 2032.

"We're still on a downward trajectory for accounting graduates, although it's worthwhile to note U.S. university enrollment and earned degrees collectively shrank during this period," Jan Taylor, the AICPA's academic in residence, said in a press release . "The AICPA remains focused on advocating profession-wide solutions to the talent shortage, and we saw increased mobilization and coordination in these efforts over the past year."

The accountant shortage is already making its mark this earnings season: The lack of accountants is delaying some companies — including Tupperware — from releasing their annual reports.

Software developers and engineers

superyacht doctor jobs

Handshake found that software developers and engineers were also among the jobs with the most postings over the past year. These workers typically get paid well. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for software developers was $127,260. There's already a lot of software developers in the US workforce — 1.59 million in 2022 — and that's expected to rise 26% from 2022 to 2032, per the BLS .

Other types of tech workers may be in need of new applicants. Artificial-intelligence engineer ranked No. 10 for LinkedIn's jobs on the rise . Data from Indeed also showed that nearly 70% of Android-developer roles were challenging to fill. Also, 52% of Python-developer roles are hard to fill, per Indeed.

Civil engineers

superyacht doctor jobs

Civil engineers were one of the roles with the most job postings on Handshake, according to the platform. And the lack of civil engineers is being felt acutely.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers , firms are trying to lure in new engineers with higher pay, more time off, and remote work. Some were even scouring social media to try to find new recruits. The ACEC Research Institute found that in the first quarter of 2024, just over half of firms had to keep turning down work because of workforce shortages.

According to a Boston Consulting Group publication in partnership with SAE International, the US will need 400,000 new engineers annually. Their analysis of BLS data found that from 2023 to 2031 demand for engineering skills would go up by 13%.

"Much of the engineering gap expected in the US over the next ten years will involve unfilled positions in software, industrial, civil, and electrical engineering, amounting to a staggering 186,000 job vacancies across the US by 2031," the publication said.

The median pay for civil engineers is $43.24 an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , or $89,940 annually.
