6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

Owners tired of the same old yacht concepts are looking to residential and even retail architects for more inspired designs. it's working., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Symbiosis Superyacht

Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.

The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah . The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package. But the interior is just as radical.

Benardeau, a designer of retail space for Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior Couture, gave the 262-foot yacht the world’s first “Nemo lounge,” or a bubble in the hull where the owners and guests could see underwater.  It also featured what looked like a floating superstructure, employing long strips of tinted glass inspired by skyscrapers. (The same visual trick was employed later in Oceanco’s 361-foot Jubilee .) Savannah was the first boat to receive full metallic exterior paint job to blend in with the ocean surroundings—an idea later seen on superyacht Kensho , when it delivered in 2022.

Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.

Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for  Oneiric , a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

Amer F100, Architect Roberto Palomba

Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the Amer F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told Robb Report during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.

‘Kensho,’ Jouin Manku

zerbinati yacht design

Kensho ‘s owner was a first-time yacht buyer who wanted a one-of-a-kind vessel. He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located.  “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told Robb Report . “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting.

‘Carinthia VII,’ Bizzozero Cassina Architects

zerbinati yacht design

Refits are also getting design overhauls by non-yacht designers. Lürssen’s 318-foot Carinthia VII , first delivered in 2002 and designed by Tim Heywood, was sold in 2022 to a new owner. He called on Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects for what turned out to be a major refit in a nearly record 300 days. The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.

Contest G7CS, Bentley Interior

zerbinati yacht design

Bentley fans who dream of a book-matched yacht interior might look closely at the 67-foot Contest 67CS.  Commissioned by a private client and launched in November, it is the first collaboration between Bentley and Contest Yachts. with all the design flair Bentley could bring to a yacht. Conceived to match the luxe design of a custom continental GT coupe, the sailboat features the same materials, motifs and craftsmanship on its cars and home designs, including the same hand-stitching found on the Bentley steering wheel and the yacht’s Malvern Chair. Bespoke one-offs include a bar and vanity unit, the captain’s chair and “Egg” table, and a sofa which was hand-built at Bentley’s engineering facility and finished in its signature trim. The brand’s iconic diamond-quilted hides were also included across entire yacht interior. Small details like the tissue box and drink coasters were created from scratch to match the owner’s taste.

‘Entourage,’ Diego Burdi, Burdifilek

zerbinati yacht design

Entourage , the second hull in Amels’ 60 Limited Editions range, is the owner’s second yacht. He had clear ideas about the functional layout of the boat, so he appointed commercial design firm Burdifilek to realize that vision. The Toronto-based co-founder, Diego Burdi, adopted a “marine design” approach. “I believe strongly that you should feel like you’re on a boat,” he told Robb Report . That is apparent in areas like the the lower-deck staterooms where the bulkheads hug the curve of the hull. Carved and layered wooden ceilings—a detail introduced from the owner’s experience in real estate—add drama and tactility. Most significantly, Burdi reversed the central stairwell and tucked it into the perimeter of the yacht to create a wider walkthrough and, in so doing, a work of art.

‘Symbiosis,’ Kurt Merki, Jr.

zerbinati yacht design

The 279-foot Symbiosis is Studio KMJ’s nature-driven introduction to the world of superyacht design. Unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, the 3,000 GT concept speaks to a rising trend for biophilic design with 10 nature-driven features. These include a “tree of life” planted on the main deck aft that stretches across two decks, a 1,000-sq. ft. irrigated lawn tended by a gardener and intended for both play and picnics, and a life-sized herbarium called “The Sanctum” where herbs, spices and vegetables can be cultivated. The Swiss designer Kurt Merki Jr collaborated with Axel Massmann, CEO of Yacht-Green, who acted as a strategic advisor on best practices to “green” the superyacht lifestyle. According to the designers, the natural elements are fully buildable. All it needs is an owner willing to take a leap.

Sail Universe

INTERVIEW. David Cherubini: “To build a sailboat is… a family matter”

Members of the Cherubini family have been creating classic yacht designs and bringing them to life with unrivaled craftsmanship since the 1920s. David Cherubini has owned Cherubini Yachts since 2004. He grew up rebuilding pianos with his father, Richard Cherubini, and building yachts with his uncles, brothers and cousins in New Jersey, USA.   We met him.

What does it mean for you to lead a “family” yard?

It means a sense of honor to be able to do this.   It’s not always easy, but I feel as if I am doing my part to preserve our family’s legacy.  When the crew and I build a Cherubini 44 or 48, there’s just nothing like it – especially watching a new family sail away on her.

zerbinati yacht design

It’s a beautiful feeling, knowing it’s real and right – and a family will enjoy her and be safe. I want to express how grateful I am for my family’s commitment and shared knowledge enabling me to preserve our heritage. Upon stepping ashore after a long passage, my crew and I always feel well cared for. I thank Uncle John, Uncle Frit and other family members and staff for this.

Your sailboats have a great “Motion Comfort” index: how do you get it?

That is a gift from the Gods! My Uncle John Cherubini Sr. was a true master of boat design – sweet lines, long center of lateral resistance, soft hollow curves, strong tumblehome, proper beam to length ratio, lead ballast and a long, powerful keel.

zerbinati yacht design

The settees and berths are below waterline level, putting our bodies through the water and not on top of it. A 40-foot waterline is imperative to be comfortable in respect to the average crest-to-crest waves of an ocean. Having a low freeboard and sweeping sheer reduces weather exposure and windage where you do not want it.

alliance_cherubini_yacht

At the helm, the captain easily sees over the coach roof and under the sails without having to stand up constantly.  Her hull is balanced beautifully.

zerbinati yacht design

Long keel is one of your distinguishing marks: what are the advantages?

Stability and comfort in any seaway. Positive directional stability and drive to windward as tight as 34 degrees without losing hull speed. Extra waterline. Shallow draft. And a very powerful driven hull – you can carry a lot of sail area or as little as necessary to be comfortable , maintaining hull speed – for the most part.

How do you combine classic design and modern materials?

We use both to the best of their advantages, assuring safety, comfort, reliability, longevity and that oh, so sumptuous feeling of a true classic yacht of a bygone era.

zerbinati yacht design

Only the best materials are used in the manufacturing of our boats. The hull is laid up solid, with no core. We use vinyl ester resin instead of the commonplace isotropic polyester resin.

Unlike the previous Cherubini sailboats constructed of wooden decks, cabin sides, coachroofs, and bulwarks, our latest sailboats have a single piece fiberglass part to replace all of that wood.  Taking advantage of today’s technology provides an owner with confidence of durability and longevity , giving them a classic yacht with low maintenance.

Our cockpit and cockpit combings also are solid fiberglass.  On the interior, we still build a super structure of gorgeous, solid Honduran mahogany , which includes deck beams, carlings, cabin sides and gutters.

zerbinati yacht design

Regarding systems, our last build included only state-of-the-art technologies. This was the first pleasure craft installation of the Yanmar 80hp smokeless commonrail turbo diesel. The 24 volt lithium ion house battery bank provides 1100 amp hours. Its Mastervolt system performs heavenly, quickly charging batteries back to full capacity. The NMEA 2000 electronic systems initially were a bit challenging. Now her owner fully understands this system and what a joy it is!

Her steering control system is second to none. Her rudder post is made of a 3-inch extruded stainless steel tube, bent aft and flattened toward the bottom.

zerbinati yacht design

This provides a seamless, 100 percent fail-safe steerage system. There are no welded flags to corrode. From the bottom up, our Cherubini solid bronze heel casting seats a super strong independent oilite bronze bushing. This provides enormous strength and flawless reliability.  In all the years of the Cherubini 44 and 48 on the water, none have ever lost their steering. This helps me rest at night.

The new Cherubini 44 is the only sailing yacht known today to commonly exceed more than 1.5 times her designed hull speed of 8.6 knots.

In my opinion, this is the perfect retirement vessel. Because of her long waterline, 4 foot 10 inch shallow draft, she can reach destinations other yachts of this size cannot even dream of.  Her split rig offers many sail plan options to accommodate any weather scenario.  For ease of handling and safety, all sheets and halyards are fairlead back to the cockpit with single-line slab reefing and electric winches.

zerbinati yacht design

Her classic hull is easily driven in light air. At 10 knots of breeze, it is not uncommon to sail 6.8 knots of hull speed.  As the weather builds, you will feel the confidence and gracefulness of the Cherubini 44.  There are only 35 Cherubini 44s ever built and eight Cherubini 48 schooners.

Ferenc Matte has written about the Cherubini 44 and 48 in “ The World’s Best Sailboats “, and in “From a Bare Hull,” he says: “ The construction is truly first class and the thought and engineering behind nearly every piece is close to remarkable. Perhaps these are today’s ultimate yachts. “

Its because of her technology and classic design that she is a forever beautiful yacht.

I believe this was written by my Uncle Frit , and I think he nailed it on the head: “ She is a romantic yacht, designed to comply with the timeless laws of Neptune, not the fickle racing rules of today. The sweep of her sheer, low freeboard and rake of her spars echo the great clippers and schooners of yesteryear. And on board, every detail is planned and crafted with love and a deep respect for the tradition of the sea. Yet, this is a yacht for today. The latest underbody technology, combined with a powerful and easily handled sail plan, result in a fast, comfortable performance in heavy weather or the lightest summer breezes. “

zerbinati yacht design

What do you think about “modern” sailboat?

I appreciate their designs and executions for each for each use purpose they provide.   I’ve never really been comfortable during a passage on a modern boat. Their moments just feel unnatural to me. Many modern boats have a tendency to be very beamy and commodious below decks. The large, cavernous cabins and centerline berths are great – dockside; however, in a real sea, and in real life sailing, they have proven dangerous with these large, open spaces.

My feeling is, for what little I know, to stay competitive, modern sailboat manufacturers have had to skinny up on material and sharpen up on technology to create efficiency. Call me old school, but I prefer a lead sled.

Last but not least, our classic final question: what does mean “sailing” for you”?

“Sailing” means arriving at my destination: My Cherubini 44.  Everything else automatically has been left behind. Only opportunity, enchantment and adventure await.

A Boat Designed to Be a Breath of Fresh Air

The creators of the latest vessel from Azimut Yachts went to great lengths to reduce its emissions, but even they won’t call it green.

A white yacht in an outdoor swimming pool. Behind is a building with the sign “Teatro.” To the right, a group of people take photos.

By Ian Volner

Reporting from Milan

This article is part of our Design special section about water as a source of creativity.

In the middle of Milan Design Week last month, in the middle of the Bagni Misteriosi — a historic bathing complex in the Porta Romana neighborhood — the Italian luxury shipbuilder Azimut Yachts hosted an unusual exhibition. It was a celebration of the company’s latest offering: the Seadeck 6, which made its debut last year and features interiors by the design team of Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez.

Having been lowered into the facility by crane, the nearly 60-foot vessel was set afloat in an outdoor swimming pool. There it bobbed, traversed by hordes of well-coiffed guests while a concealed apparatus shrouded it in bursts of atmospheric steam. Surreal, elegant, not a little absurd, it was a scene straight out of Fellini, with overtones of Werner Herzog’s boat-hoisting epic “Fitzcarraldo.”

But the thing that made it most unusual? “Azimut wanted to make this the most sustainable boat on the market,” Mr. Rodriguez said. “We tried to do that.”

The ultimate playthings for the ultrawealthy, high-end pleasure craft would not seem optimal candidates for greening. Yet a growing number of manufacturers and designers are trying to change that, producing yachts both large and (comparatively) small assembled from fewer and less carbon-intensive materials, requiring a fraction of the power to run and drawing more of their energy from renewable sources.

In a peculiar twist for an industry uniquely exposed to supply-chain shocks and the vicissitudes of geopolitics (the loss of the once-lucrative Russian market continues to smart), global brand leaders appear to be making the move toward energy efficiency of their own accord, rather than in response to any explicit demand from their clientele.

“We will have to see if the world is ready,” said Giovanna Vitelli, Azimut’s chairwoman, as she stood aboard the Seadeck 6 during its not-quite maiden, not-quite voyage.

It is an approach that entails some risk. In January, Silent Yachts — an Austrian solar-electric catamaran company with facilities in Fano, Italy — was reported to be approaching bankruptcy amid problems with both its corporate parent and a key subcontractor. A former client stepped in to rescue the brand from insolvency, yet challenges remain. In a recent interview with the trade publication Superyacht News, the company’s new chief operating officer, Fabrizio Iarrera, spoke of the “costs associated with creating an entirely new market.”

Still, the push toward more sustainable yachting appears to be barreling forward, part of a broader shift in the role of design in the industry. Seven years ago, Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture in New York — known for its plush hotel interiors for the hospitality magnate Ian Schrager — was invited by Azimut’s sister company Benetti to develop a new yacht concept, the Oasis. It was one of the rare instances in which Benetti, founded in 1873, had sought out collaborators with no previous maritime experience, and all parties took it as an opportunity to import a set of values they viewed as lacking in the boating world.

According to Enrico Bonetti, the architecture firm’s co-founder, boat design previously favored grand spaces that no one actually liked. “There’s always this big table nobody’s using, then you step into another place with shiny things,” he said. “We didn’t follow that.” With its open, airy living space, wood paneling and notable lack of gold leaf, the Oasis represented a more humane vision for the yacht of the future, one constrained by at least the appearance of refinement and reserve, though it was ritzy nonetheless.

That low-key tendency is very much in line with the decarbonization campaign now underway at Azimut and other builders. In recent years, design studios like Zaha Hadid Architects and Pininfarina have turned out yacht proposals that pair sleek visuals with reduced reliance on fossil fuels; later this year, Yves Béhar, the Swiss-born product and furniture maestro, will unveil his own take on the trend — a catamaran designed for an as-yet unnamed manufacturer. “It’s essentially an E.V.,” said Mr. Béhar, who was also in Milan for the design fair.

Underlying the designer eco-yacht phenomenon is the intuitive sense, as Antonio Rodriguez put it, that “silent luxury” is fast displacing opulence. Where previous generations of yachters sought to flaunt their wealth, today’s owners may be less keen to draw attention to their own affluence. In reducing their carbon footprint, boatmakers are hoping to lure customers eager to reduce their profile, while still allowing them to ply the seven seas in style.

The Seadeck 6 certainly does that. With a crisp, white exterior — the work of the veteran yacht designer Alberto Mancini — the ship sleeps up to eight in three below-deck cabins. Topside, guests can sprawl in fore and aft lounges, or take lunch prepared in a semi-concealed galley, served on an elegant foldout table. The interior palette is muted, the contours soft, and everywhere, Ms. Vitelli said, the intention was to let people “feel close to water” rather than immuring them in an oceangoing penthouse.

Relatively speaking, the Seadeck’s ecological credentials are also impressive. Nearly every feature has been retooled for minimal environmental impact: replacing the customary teak deck with sustainably sourced cork; covering the walls and upholstering the seating with organic and recycled materials; even sealing the hull with something the company refers to as an ‘eco-gel finish.’” Most important, the craft incorporates a still-novel (for marine propulsion) hybrid engine, capable of a top speed of 33 knots with the ability to navigate about 200 miles offshore — enough for a quick spin from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas.

Add it together, and the company claims the Seadeck 6 and its larger cousin, the 71-foot Seadeck 7, achieve an operational carbon output 60 percent that of comparable vessels.

It’s a start, but only that. A comparative analysis with a similarly sized Azimut product — coupled with statistics from the Environmental Protection Agency — suggests that the cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Nassau would contribute roughly 4,400 pounds of carbon dioxide on the Seadeck 6, well over what the average American produces in a month.

And then there are the more immediate costs: around $2.8 million for the Seadeck 6 and $4.25 million for the Seadeck 7. Ms. Vitelli said the company hopes that enough buyers will come aboard to make price reductions possible in future.

A lot is riding on these hopes. Elsewhere in Milan, at the giant exhibition hall of the Salone del Mobile furniture fair, a talk session with a group of yacht experts underscored the stakes: During the panel, Stefano de Vivo, the chief commercial officer of the luxury yacht brand Ferretti Group, presented a slide showing Italy’s dominance in the custom-yacht sector, with domestic manufacturers taking a large share of the $9 billion global marketplace.

Mr. de Vivo declared sustainability essential to shipbuilding’s ongoing success and spoke of a general convergence with the design field at large. “As a shipyard, we’ve had to become less ‘marine,’” he said.

Back at the Bagni Misteriosi, mariners did seem in somewhat short supply, as various design lovers and Salone personalities (including the celebrated architect Michele de Lucchi, who helped create an on-site installation for Azimut) swanned around the bathhouse garden and its waterborne centerpiece. As an image of an ecologically sensitive future, the spectacle seemed off the mark — but then the Seadeck’s creators are careful not to make any overly sweeping claims as to whether their yacht, or any yacht for that matter, can truly be deemed an ecological asset.

“We don’t really like the word ‘sustainable,’” Mr. Rodriguez said. “We prefer to say it’s ‘conscious.’”
