YPI Crew’s 2022 Salary Report Revealed

ypi yacht salary

YPI CREW, the leading authority in yacht crew recruitment, has released its 2022 Yacht Crew Salary Report, providing in-depth and up-to-date salary analysis.

The report utilises 2021 data from YPI CREW’s various crew departments, spanning engineers, yacht deck crew, yacht chefs, and yacht interior crew. It offers a handy and comprehensive reference point for both yacht crew and employers

Overall, YPI CREW witnessed a significant increase in the number of job orders across all departments in 2021, with more crew connected with their dream careers. While the report doesn’t demonstrate any major new trends, it shows a return to stability following two years of Covid 19 disruption and the collapse of the crew recruitment market in April 2020.

“YPI CREW welcomed 2021 as the year of revival, and indeed it was,” said Laurence Lewis, YPI CREW’s president. “This was following the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the yachting industry where 2020 was considered the year of survival for yacht crew placement.”

She added: “It should be noted that due to a smaller number of junior-level hospitality, service and galley staff entering the market due to Covid 19 travel restrictions, essentially from the Southern Hemisphere, there has been tension on salaries in these departments throughout 2021.

“For example, in the chef’s department, in order to secure and especially retain qualified and experienced crew, salaries and scheduled leave have become an important part of the negotiation process with increased competition for the best all-round package.”

Crew salaries in the report depend on qualifications, a crew member's years of experience and, in some instances, whether a vessel is a private yacht or a charter yacht. Interestingly, the size of a yacht only impacts the earnings of select roles.

Yacht deck crew salaries

The highest-paid deck crew salaries were for captains, reflecting their pivotal role and the large amount of responsibility that they assume. In 2021, captains on a 100-metre plus yacht were paid an average salary of around 18,000 Euros per month, plus a discretionary bonus. At the other end of the spectrum, captain salaries on a yacht below 30-metre were significantly less at around 3,500 to 6,000 Euros per month.

It’s important to mention that the salaries across the deck department will vary depending on experience and qualifications. For example, entry-level junior deckhands have an expected monthly salary of between 2,700 to 2,800 Euros per month. However, the salaries grow up to 4,000 Euros for specialised and experienced deckhands.

Yacht engineer salaries

When talking about engineering salaries, the ranges very much depend on the certification that the candidate will hold.

Chief engineers on a 100-metre plus yacht typically earnt around 12,000 to 15,000 Euros per month in 2021. Comparatively, a chief engineer on a 30 to 40-metre yacht earnt on average between 4,000 to 6,000 Euros per month.

The lowest-paid salaries were for motorman, who typically could expect to earn between 3,200 to 4,000 Euros on larger sized vessels.

Yacht chef salaries

The most experienced yacht chefs working on yachts 100-metres plus earnt a monthly average salary of around 8,000 Euros plus per month in 2021, while a sous chef on the same sized vessel earnt on average 4,000 to 7,000 Euros per month. Third chefs typically earnt around 3,500 Euros per month.

At the other end of the spectrum, on vessels below 30-metres, a head chef earnt between 4,000 to 4,500 Euros. This typically represents a starting salary for chefs without yachting experience, and they would usually run the entire kitchen without any additional support from qualified chefs.

Yacht interior crew salaries

The highest-paid roles were for pursers and chief stews working on superyachts 80-metres plus. Average monthly salaries were from 7,000 to 8,000 Euros per month for these positions. Conversely, a chief stew on a yacht below 30-metres was paid on average 3,500 to 4,000 Euros per month in 2021.

Junior stews saw little change in their monthly income between vessel sizes, typically earning between 2,500 to 3,500 Euros, creeping up to 4,000 Euros on vessels sized 70-metres plus.

Nurses, a role that is ordinarily only found on larger superyachts, were paid on average 3,500 to 4,000 Euros plus per month in 2021. Spa therapists, another crew position typically only found on larger yachts, boasted a monthly salary of around 3,000 to 3,500 plus.

* Please note that the salaries will depend on the usage of the yacht, private or charter, and the level of study or qualification required for the specialist positions, such as spa manager, spa therapist and personal trainer. For example, as a personal trainer, HIIT, cardio, weight training, yoga or Pilates experience may be required or, for a nurse, the salary can be based on previous experience in hospitals and field of expertise.

“YPI CREW welcomed 2021 as the year of revival, and indeed it was,” said Laurence Lewis, YPI CREW’s president. “This was following the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the yachting industry where 2020 was considered the year of survival for yacht crew placement.”

Factors influencing salaries in the report are qualifications, years of experience of a crew member and, in some cases, whether the vessel is a private yacht or a chartered yacht. That said, data shows that the size of a yacht only affects the earnings of certain roles .

Yacht Deck Crew Salaries

Captains, figuring as the highest-paid deck crew, were paid an average salary of around 18,000 Euros per month on a 100-metre plus yacht , plus a discretionary bonus. At the other end of the spectrum, captain salaries on a yacht below 30-metre were significantly less at around 3,500 to 6,000 Euros per month .

In the below table, salaries are expressed in Euro €. The numbers shown here are general median salary ranges and the actual salaries may vary depending on numerous other variables such as experience, certificates, type of yacht etc.  Brackets that are empty mean that the particular position is generally not applicable for that yacht size.

Please note that shaded brackets indicate the yacht size range where rotational system might be offered.

Yacht Engineer Salaries

The salaries of engineers vary greatly depending on their qualifications. Chief engineers on a 100-metre plus yacht typically earnt around 12,000 to 15,000 Euros per month in 2021. Comparatively, a chief engineer on a 30 to 40-metre yacht earned on average between 4,000 to 6,000 Euros per month.

The lowest-paid salaries were for motorman , who typically could expect to earn between 3,200 to 4,000 Euros on larger sized vessels. For yachts below 30m the role of an Engineer is covered by the Captain and in some cases by another member of the deck crew.

Third chefs typically earned around 3,500 Euros per month.

On vessels below 30-metres, a head chef earnt between 4,000 to 4,500 Euros. This typically represents a starting salary for chefs without yachting experience , and they would usually run the entire kitchen without any additional support from qualified chefs.

Yacht Interior Crew Salaries

The highest-paid roles were for pursers and chief stews working on superyachts 80-metres plus . Average monthly salaries were from 7,000 to 8,000 Euros per month for these positions. Conversely, a chief stew on a yacht below 30-metres was paid on average 3,500 to 4,000 Euros per month in 2021.

YPI Crew Salary Report 2020: ‘Rollercoaster of a year’

ypi yacht salary

Last year “was a rollercoaster year” said Laurence Lewis, president of recruitment agency YPI CREW. The company has just published its annual crew salary report for 2020 . There was a huge collapse of the recruitment market in April, followed by recovery during the summer from July onwards according to YPI. Many crew lost their jobs and were unsure about future prospects.

“Yet somehow salaries remained stable,” said Lewis. “Border restrictions and reduced access to transport contributed to keep tension on salary levels as even yacht crew found it challenging to move around the world – the reduced availability of ‘ready to employ’ crew clearly acted as leverage on the market. We foresee that 2021 will see some stability return to the crew recruitment market and that salaries might either plateau or register a slight growth again.”

The report outlines the average salary range for each crew position, including captains, engineers, pursers, stews, chefs, and deckhands. This is for both motor and sailing yachts of varying size, as well as both temporary and permanent roles. Since the site launched in 2016, more than 5,655 salaries have been collected.

Yacht captains on 81m to 100m motor yachts earned the highest salary –up to £14,500 per month. The lowest yacht captain salary was £5,048 per month, on a yacht below 35m.

Other high-earning positions include chief engineers, with the highest salary reported at £10,250 per month for a rotation position on a 101m plus yacht. Chief officer salaries trailed slightly behind, with the highest monthly salary reported as £7,700 for a rotation position on a 101m plus vessel.

Comparatively, deckhands, viewed as an entry-level position, earned from £1,700 to £2,900 per month, depending on yacht size.

Crew on motor yachts were paid more than crew on sailboats. Additionally, crew salaries generally increased by yacht size, with crew working on the largest yachts taking home the highest salaries.

Superyacht salaries – at a glance

  • Captains on 81m to 100m motor yachts earned the highest salary –up to £14,500 per month
  • Chief engineers are second with the highest salary reported at £10,250 per month
  • Chief officer salaries trailed slightly behind, with the highest monthly salary reported as £7,700
  • Entry-level positions, such as deckhands, earned from £1,700 to £2,900 per month.

YPI Crew Annual Report Shows 45 Percent Increase in Job Requests

Yacht crew at work on aft deck

After a turbulent year in 2020, YPI Crew , like much of the world, began to bounce back in 2021. They released their annual report on February 21, which showed a 45 percent increase in job requests from 2020 to 2021 and 13 percent from pre-pandemic 2019 to 2021.

  • Yacht Crew Market Trend: U.S. Crew in Demand

The departments with the highest growth were chef and stew with a 57 percent increase in job orders, followed by the engineering department with a 50 percent increase. Demand for deckhands and bosuns grew by 32 percent and another three percent for senior deck officers, while captains saw a 20 percent increase, which YPI states was fueled by a vibrant brokerage market.

However, some figures shared in YPI Crew’s annual report remain consistent with the past years:

  • 61 percent of jobs were on board private yachts with 39 percent on charter
  • 94 percent were on motor yachts and six percent on sailing yachts
  • 39 percent of their jobs were on yachts 71 meters or above, and 32 percent on vessels between 51 and 70 meters

They also saw new crew registration at an all-time high with almost 8,000 new crew registering with them, a nine percent increase from 2020 that they share was already a busy year. It’s a positive note for those in the industry worried about a future crew shortage and that more people are entering and hoping to be part of yachting.

  • New Build Boom to Create Thousands of Crew Jobs

With the company celebrating 20 years in 2022, YPI Crew have already started the year off strong with an 80 percent increase in job requests in the month of January compared to January 2021.

YPI CREW Releases 2023 Yacht Crew Salaries Report

ypi yacht salary

YPI CREW, a leading yacht crew recruitment company, has released its 2023 Yacht Crew Salaries Report following a positive and fast-paced year in yacht crew placement. The report outlines trends in the industry and emphasizes the importance of flexibility in attracting top talent.

ypi yacht salary

2022 marked a significant shift in the yachting industry, as the effects of Covid-19 began to wane. One key trend that emerged was the extension of scheduled or rotational leave to positions outside of the engine room and the bridge. Crew members are increasingly focused on achieving a harmonious work-life balance, leading yachts to adapt their leave packages to remain competitive.

ypi yacht salary

Flexibility with regards to leave has become a key factor for all departments and allows for a larger pool of candidates who are fully committed to the yacht, its programme and owner.

Both the Deck/Bosun’s and the Interior/Galley Departments have witnessed a steady trend towards increased leave packages. Senior Stews, for example, now seek a minimum of 90 days leave, and 95% of Chief Stews look for full rotation. Stew Head of Departments have come to realize the benefits of scheduled or rotational leave, a perk that was once reserved for Engineers or Officer/Captains Departments.

ypi yacht salary

Additionally, and in order to compete with the larger yachts , an important number of yachts under 70metres are now also considering increased leave packages to secure top crew.

ypi yacht salary

It’s important to note that the salaries listed in the report are median range salaries and can vary based on factors such as job-specific skills, professional qualifications, and experience.

Yachting Crew Salary Guidelines and Position Descriptions

Yacht crew salary guidelines Interactive job descriptions

The salary guidelines are utilized by an array of industry professionals worldwide as a reliable benchmark for yacht crew salaries. This active data is taken from the thousands of live crew profiles who are placed on yachts by Luxury Yacht Group every year. New members joining the industry turn to the websites ‘Department Descriptions’ to learn the essentials before taking the plunge.

For years Luxury Yacht Group has established themselves as the busiest, most reputable crew agency in the yachting industry. Founder and President Rupert Connor launched the company in 2001 with that exact goal in mind. Over the past decade and a half, the agency has grown in major proportions with offices located across the globe, and expansions into the yacht operations, charter and sales divisions.

The recently launched ‘Yacht Department Directory’ allows you to read about each individual department, and browse through the positions within. Each department is responsible for a unique set of tasks onboard, and is suited for individuals with specific skillsets and experience. The salary guides show a range of pay according to position.

Within each profession there is a detailed break-down of the job and its’ corresponding salary range. These pages are incredibly beneficial to owners and crew, as well as candidates joining the industry. They explain in depth what role each person plays onboard, their specific duties, and the required skills. They also advise which characteristics could be ‘salary modifiers’. In the case of captain as example, a skillset that would modify the salary in a positive way would be speaking multiple languages, but limited experience in the intended cruising area (specific to that job) could result in a decrease of monthly pay. Luxury Yacht Group has meticulously thought about all the factors and attributes that come into play.

The information under each department is also highly beneficial to any crew member looking to further their career on yachts. It clearly lays out the necessary career path for each profession, and goes into detail about how many years’ experience is needed, or what licenses are required to progress. For example, a bosun trying to advance to an officer position will typically have at least three years’ experience, and will have to get the required Officer of the Watch license at a minimum. Holders of an OOW are capable of leading navigational watches with confidence, and the captain will rely on these candidates to manage the deck team.

Another nifty feature inside these pages are the ‘Position Statistics’ which illustrate how many candidates the live data is actively pulling from. At the time of writing this article, statistics for the captain position stated: “Our data is calculated from 17,773 relevant work experience records out of 70,107 experiences in the deck department.” It also goes on to show the average longevity in this position is at 751 days, and that there are 491 candidates currently available as captains on Luxury Yacht Group’s books. This data is alive and will adjust regularly as crew filter in and out of jobs.

Captain job description Position statistics

It’s tools like these that have given Luxury Yacht Group their edge over competitors. The agency continues to grow and refine the largest professional yacht crew database in the industry. The team has degrees in management, business, engineering, marketing and design. Many of their employees have come from a background in yachting and bring with them factual onboard yachting experiences, positioning Luxury Yacht Group as a well-rounded leader in their field.

Engineering License Changes

Engineering License Changes

The MCA has restructured the engineering certifications. The MEOL course has been done away with, and the AEC course made mandatory and more thorough. Luxury Yacht Group explains all these changes, what engineers progressing through the ranks can do now, and how Y ticket holders can convert their licenses over to the structure.

446 captains submitted information to www.yachtingsalaries.com, and the data revealed that 13% worked on sailing yachts and the other 83% on motor yachts. Captains on larger yachts earned more per month than captains of smaller vessels to create an upward trend, although M/Y captains of 35m-51m superyachts fared particularly well, with a jump in salary from €9,000 per month for 41m-50m yachts up to €13,000 p/m for larger luxury yachts. Private and permanent captains tended to earn the most for their size category, with permanent captains coming out slightly ahead.

Sailing yacht captains tended to earn the same as on motor yachts for the 0-35m and 35-40m vessels, earned more than motor yacht captains in the 41-50m category by €2,000 per month, and earned less than motor yacht captains by €2,000 in the 51-65m category.

Technical Crew

239 of the 434 technical crew surveyed were chief engineers, and on charter yachts, they earned an excellent salary compared to private, permanent and rotational counterparts on the same-sized yacht: In the 0-35m size category, they earned €6,000 per month compared to €5,500. Salary levelled off in the 80-100m category, with chief engineers on charters earning slightly less than others with a salary of €9,500.

Second engineers were the most stable across the sectors and received a steady pay of between €48,000, rising to €70,000 on the largest yachts. Second engineers on charter yachts were paid considerably more per month than permanent and private second engineers within the 51-65m and 66-80m categories, earning between €5,000-€10,000 more in the former category and €2,000-€5,000 per month more in the latter.

Third engineers earned between €2,500 and €5,000 per month, with the pay scale raising incrementally based on yacht size.

Deck officers

69% of the 224 deck officers who took part in the survey were permanent and 31% rotational. Second and third officers had a greater chance of occupying a rotational position (50% and 70%), making deck officers the most likely crew members to have rotational work. Deck officers on charter yachts tended to earn less than counterparts on similarly-sized vessels, and private and permanent positions provide the most stable throughout.

Salaries for chief officers on charter yachts ranged from under €4,000 per month on 0-35m vessels to over €8,000 on 81-100m vessels and dropping slightly in the category of 101+m

Data for 2nd and 3rd officers was more sporadic, and charter position salaries ranged from €3,800 for both positions on yachts 51-65m and upwards.

Although 127 chefs participated in the survey, results were varied both for yacht sizes and sectors, producing the unusual graph where the head chefs on a 0-35m and 66-80m yacht were earning approximately the same (€4,000 per month) while on other sized charter yachts the head chefs were earning between €5,000 and €8,000. Of the head chefs who submitted data. 85% were permanent and 15% on rotation.

Vessel size seemed to play a part in the salary of sous chefs, with each type of employees earning more on larger yachts. 71% were permanent, and 29% were temporary.

Pursers, Stewards and Stewardesses

For the 2016/2017 report, only 27 pursers, 68 chief stewards/stewardesses and 27-second stewards/stewardesses provided information, and there are therefore too few results to make solid conclusions about industry salaries in this area. Of the pursers, salary varies from €5,000 per month to €7,000 and remuneration did not have any correlation with the size of the yacht and salary was stable regardless of the type of employment, although results were the most unstable in the 66-80m category.

Excellent service onboard

Chief stewards and stewardesses received greater salaries for working on larger yachts, with rotation, permanent and private employment having the most stable salaries and charter crew the most variable: salary on a 51-65m superyacht was €6,500 per month, whereas under €6,000 was paid to stewards and stewardesses aboard 66-80m vessels and smaller yachts.

The results of the second stewards and stewardesses had the most variability, with charter and rotation crew earning under €3,000 for 66-80m vessels while private and permanent crew earned €5,000.

Deckhands

Deckhand salaries tended not to vary depending on the size of the vessel, and 93% were permanent and 7% on rotation aboard motor yachts, while sailing yachts had 100%, permanent crew. From the 87 deckhands that contributed to the study, data revealed that salaries tended to range between €2,100 – €3,000 per month, regardless of whether the yacht was a charter, private or permanent. Deckhands on rotation earned €3,000-€9,000 less depending on the size of the yacht.

The website  www.yachtingsalaries.com currently has 2,857 searchable salaries and includes other professions such as bosun and helicopter pilot, as well as the full comprehensive report. Results are searchable at any time, and the next report is due in November 2018.

Working On Yachts

There are currently over 15,000 yachts in the world large enough to require professional, qualified yacht crew and as a result this industry is growing rapidly each year.

A career in yachting can be rewarding, exciting and a wonderful opportunity to travel the world and explore new horizons!

Wherever there is water, you have the potential to go. Traditionally the yachting industry in the Mediterranean runs from April until September and from November to April in the States & Caribbean. Having said that, the possibilities are endless with many yachts circumnavigating the world.

Yachting is an eye opening, ultimately fun industry that demands hard work, perfection and attention to detail. We work with yacht crew every day and have a deep insight into what new crew should do to make the most of their career. Here are our top ten tips for starting out.

pdf

You cannot work on board a luxury yacht without getting your basic qualifications first. Bluewater offers a full range of crew training courses for those just starting in the industry:

  • STCW 95 Basic Training (Europe) 5 Day Course
  • Powerboat Level II 2 Day Course
  • Interior Introduction 3 Day Course
  • AEC 1 5 Day Course

We have a sample copy and lots of relevant advice on creating your first yachting CV within our 'Your CV' section.

Certain times of year are more favourable for new crew looking to join the industry. If you are going to Antibes or Palma, we advise end of March/April. Fort Lauderdale is different in that it is sunny most of the year, however there is a peak recruitment season around November each year.

In every yachting hub you will find english speaking bars and cafes filled with yacht crew. Make sure you go and explore to build your network within yachting. Although global, it is a small industry so make sure to present yourself professionally.

Finding your first position in yachting is the hardest. Make sure you are dock walking, looking for day work opportunities and handing out your CV. You may find that one day's work leads to a permanent role or other job interviews.

Read websites, follow yachting news, learn from other crew who were in your 'deck shoes' a few years ago. Good examples of yachting websites & magazines are:

  • Bluewater bluewateryachting.com
  • Dockwalk dockwalk.com
  • The Crew Report thecrewreport.com
  • The Triton thetriton.com

Apply for jobs, manage your course bookings and sign up for events.

You can buy pay as you go SIM cards either in newsagents or specialised telephone shops around the Mediterranean. This will help to save you money when job hunting!

Captains check Facebook and Twitter pages before interviews. Make sure any public images of you are professional and will not reduce your chances of employment. Once employed be sure to avoid any posts about your yachts, current location and inappropriate images.

A smart, professional appearance will win over shorts and a beach top.

The most important aspect when you are looking for work is to make sure your CV is up to date, well written and includes any relevant experience that you might have.

It is best to emphasize any hospitality experience or customer service skills you may have had, such as waitressing, hostessing, silver service, bartending, cooking, nanny/au-pairing, babysitting, flower arranging, cleaning and/or laundry experience.

Should you wish to join the engineering department, make sure you include all mechanical experience and qualifications, including all work done in refrigeration, air conditioning, work with engines, and any electrical work, electronics or AV/IT.

The most important aspect to include is any recreational sailing experience you may have had. If you are also qualified or experienced in woodwork or carpentry, have painting, polishing, varnishing know-how, then that is also great. In addition any diving, sailing, fishing, any water sports background are all fantastic skills that are easily transferable.

We deal with a great multitude of chef positions, ranging from crew chef to head chef. Most positions will require some form of culinary training, however some crew succeed in entering this department through the stew/cook route on a smaller yacht.

When filling in your online profile with us, make sure to only select positions that you are qualified to do onboard. Selecting more than 3-4 positions on your profile can confuse potential employers and effect our search results.

Your CV should be no more than two sides of A4, including your photograph (in colour, face on, without sunglasses).

Your CV should be in a word format to ensure it can be opened easily by all employers.

List all recent contact information, references and work history.

Including a personal statement, along with a clear objective can help distinguish you from other candidates and helps prospective employers grasp your long term goals.

Don't give employers an excuse to dismiss your CV, review and spell check it!

Yacht Salaries Update Little Has Changed

superyacht crew salaries

For many years, we researched and kept up to date, a data base of crew salaries and each year, writing in many of the magazines aimed at superyacht crew, we published our results.

The last in 2015 was published in On Board Magazine

Now the baton for keeping crew up to date with salaries has passed to YPI CREW, the yacht crew recruitment company based in Antibes.

The company has released its 2017 report using statistics gathered on and compiled using data garnered from its free salary-sharing platform, www.yachtingsalaries.com . This website collates salary information from thousands of crew and provides transparency to the yachting industry.

The new report comprehensively outlines the average salary range for each yacht crew position, from deckhands to captains, benchmarking industry standards and providing a point of reference for employers and crew alike.

This report should be both helpful for Captains and managers helping plan their season budgets as well as for crew who are either changing roles or joining the yachting world.

Not Much Has Changed

What is distressing for crew however is the fact that year on year how slowly pay has increased. Our own figures show that in 2002 we wrote for a magazine that was then called The Yacht Report and reported that the average wage a deckhand or an entry level stewardess on a 50 metre yacht could expect to earn is US$ 3,000.

In the same article we stated “Deckhands and entry level stewardesses have for years been level pegging.” Elsewhere in the same issue we reported, Salaries have remained almost stagnant over the past two years but evidence shows that after a little while in the job the Stewardesses are moving ahead.

Today YPI CREW reports that deckhands can expect to earn between €2,100 and €3,000 per month. When talking about stewardesses, YPI report their “pay spectrum starts at under €3,000”

Captains have not fared any better in the last 15 years except that we can assume that those commanding a very large (back then) 50 metre yacht are now commanding something much larger now. In 2002, according to the figures we published, the Captain of a private 50 metre yacht was earning $12,000pm Today YPI CREW suggest the figure is €11,000.

The YPI CREW report does suggest that of the 446  captains  that submitted salary information, 83% work on motor yachts and 17% work on sailing yachts. The trend followed expectations insomuch as captains of larger vessels tended to earn higher earnings, with private and permanent contracts paying especially well for 50-65m sailing yachts and 81-100m+ motor yachts.

The report adds, “Only 1% of sailing yacht captains and 15% of motor yacht captains are on rotation, with salaries starting at €5,500 per month for both. However, motor yacht captains on rotation can earn almost €16,000 per month for large vessels, whereas sailing yacht captains on rotation earn an average maximum of €8,000 per month.

Responding to a real need for transparent information within the yachting industry, The Crew Salary Report has been created with the aim of freely sharing information and making the industry a level playing field for all candidates. Unlike most annual surveys, Yachtingsalaries.com is updated in real time and information can be searched instantly.

Although created by YPI CREW, yachtingsalaries.com is an independent entity, meaning there is no incentive for people to enter misleading information. Members of the community can report any inconsistent or inflated salaries as suspicious and they will be removed immediately from the system to maintain the platform’s accuracy and integrity.

Deckhand Yacht Salaries Explained – Up-to-Date Info

Are you wondering how much deckhands make on yachts? Curious about deckhand salaries and the overall yacht crew salary structure? Look no further! In this article, we’ll provide you with up-to-date information on deckhand wages, along with valuable insights into the yacht industry’s salary landscape.

Key Takeaways:

  • Deckhand salaries on yachts vary depending on qualifications, experience, and the type of yacht.
  • According to the 2022 Yacht Crew Salary Report by YPI CREW, deckhands on a 100-meter-plus yacht earn an average monthly salary of around €2,700 to €2,800.
  • The size and type of the yacht, location, cruising itinerary, deckhand experience, and the owner’s budget are factors that influence deckhand compensation.
  • Yacht crew salaries are structured based on experience, qualifications, position, and the size and type of the yacht.
  • Timing, research, and negotiation skills are crucial factors in maximizing yacht crew salaries.

Factors Influencing Yacht Deckhand Compensation

The salary of a yacht deckhand is influenced by several factors that contribute to their earning potential in the yacht industry. These factors include:

  • Size and Type of Yacht: Larger yachts tend to offer higher wages for deckhands. The size and luxury level of the yacht are significant determinants of the deckhand’s compensation.
  • Location and Cruising Itinerary: The location and cruising itinerary of the yacht also impact the deckhand’s salary. Yachts traveling through popular and high-demand destinations may provide more earning opportunities.
  • Experience and Qualifications: Deckhands with more experience and advanced qualifications are likely to command higher salaries. Additional certifications and specialized skills can increase their market value.
  • Owner’s Budget: The financial resources and budget of the yacht’s owner play a role in determining the deckhand’s compensation. Owners with larger budgets may be more inclined to offer higher salaries.

Deckhands working on luxury yachts often have additional earning potential beyond their base salary. They may receive bonuses and tips from guests, further enhancing their overall compensation.

Understanding these factors is crucial for deckhands looking to maximize their earning potential in the yacht industry. By considering these key elements, deckhands can negotiate fair salaries and explore opportunities on yachts that align with their experience and goals.

Yacht Deck Crew Salaries

In the world of yachting, deck crew members play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of a yacht. Their responsibilities include handling ropes, maintaining cleanliness and order on the deck, assisting with guest activities, and more. But how much do these dedicated professionals earn? Let’s dive into the salary aspect of the yacht deck crew.

According to the YPI CREW Salary Report, captains are among the highest earners within the deck crew. Captains on a 100-meter-plus yacht earn an impressive average salary of around €18,000 per month. Their extensive experience and expertise contribute to their commanding salary.

On the other end of the spectrum, junior deckhands enter the industry with enthusiasm and passion. Regardless of the yacht’s size, these aspiring crew members can expect a monthly salary range between €2,700 to €2,800. Although their salary might be lower in comparison to other positions, junior deckhands gain valuable experience and opportunities for growth.

It’s worth noting that deck crew salaries are also influenced by the size and type of the yacht. Larger yachts usually have more luxurious amenities and thus offer higher salaries to attract experienced crew members. Meanwhile, the salary range may vary for different sea-faring vessels, such as private yachts and charter yachts.

The image below offers a visual representation of the salary differences among the yacht deck crew positions:

Yacht deck crew salaries

As aspiring crew members consider their career options, it’s important to research and understand the salary structure within the industry. By evaluating their skills, qualifications, and career aspirations, individuals can make informed decisions to maximize their earning potential in the yacht industry.

In the following sections, we will explore the salaries of other key roles within the yacht crew, including yacht engineers, yacht chefs, and yacht interior crew members, shedding light on the various career paths and potential earnings available in this vibrant industry.

Yacht Engineer Salaries

When it comes to yacht engineering positions, salaries can vary depending on the size of the vessel. According to the YPI CREW Salary Report, chief engineers on a 100-meter-plus yacht typically earn between €12,000 to €15,000 per month. On the other hand, chief engineers on a 30- to 40-meter yacht earn an average salary ranging from €4,000 to €6,000 per month. The report also highlights the compensation of motormen, who typically earn between €3,200 to €4,000 per month on larger vessels.

It is worth noting that these figures are averages and can vary based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and the specific yacht and its owner. Ensuring the smooth operation and maintenance of a yacht’s engineering systems, chief engineers play a crucial role in the crew hierarchy and are compensated accordingly.

Yacht Chef Salaries

The YPI CREW Salary Report reveals that experienced yacht chefs working on 100-meter-plus yachts earn an average salary of around €8,000 and above per month. Sous chefs on the same-sized vessel earn an average salary of €4,000 to €7,000 per month, while third chefs typically earn around €3,500 per month. On smaller yachts below 30 meters, head chefs earn between €4,000 to €4,500 per month, representing a starting salary for chefs without yachting experience.

When it comes to salaries, yacht chefs hold a prestigious position on board luxury yachts. Their culinary skills and ability to create delectable dishes for discerning guests make them an invaluable asset to the yacht crew. With their expertise in creating gourmet meals in a confined space and catering to the individual preferences and dietary requirements of guests, yacht chefs play a crucial role in ensuring a memorable dining experience on board.

The high salaries earned by experienced yacht chefs reflect the level of skill and professionalism required for this role. These talented chefs are responsible for crafting exquisite menus, sourcing the finest ingredients, and managing the galley to the highest standards of hygiene and efficiency. They work closely with the yacht’s management, interior, and service crew to deliver exceptional dining experiences throughout the voyage.

The salaries of yacht chefs reflect their level of experience, the size and type of the yacht, and the demands of the charter or private itinerary. As chefs gain more experience in the yachting industry and develop their culinary repertoire, they can command higher salaries and attract opportunities to work on larger and more luxurious yachts.

The YPI CREW Salary Report serves as a valuable resource for both experienced and aspiring yacht chefs, providing insights into the industry’s salary standards. It helps professionals in this field negotiate fair compensation and make informed decisions about their career paths.

Yacht Interior Crew Salaries

When it comes to the salaries of yacht interior crew members, pursers and chief stews working on 80-meter-plus superyachts earn the highest salaries. According to the YPI CREW Salary Report, the average monthly salaries for these positions range from €7,000 to €8,000.

On yachts below 30 meters, chief stews earn an average salary of €3,500 to €4,000 per month. Junior stews, on the other hand, can expect to earn between €2,500 to €4,000 per month, with potential salary increases on larger vessels.

Nurses and spa therapists, typically found on larger superyachts, also enjoy competitive salaries. According to the salary report, nurses on yachts earn salaries ranging from €3,500 to €4,000 per month. Spa therapists, on the other hand, start at an average salary of €3,000 to €3,500 per month.

yacht interior crew salaries

These salaries reflect the compensation ranges for different positions in the yacht interior crew. With the potential for career growth and experience, these salaries can increase over time. The YPI CREW Salary Report acts as a valuable resource for understanding the earning potential and salary structure for yacht interior crew members.

Yacht Crew Salary Structure and Negotiation Tips

When it comes to yacht crew salaries, several factors come into play, including experience, qualifications, position, and the size and type of yacht. Understanding the salary structure for yacht crew is essential for crew members who want to negotiate competitive salary packages and maximize their earning potential.

Firstly, it’s crucial for crew members to conduct thorough research and assess their own skills and strengths. This will help them determine their market value and negotiate from a position of knowledge. Industry standards and personal achievements should be taken into account when discussing salary expectations.

Timing is also a key factor in salary negotiations. Crew members should choose an appropriate time to discuss salaries with their employers. This can be during contract renewals, after completing significant projects, or when negotiating a promotion.

However, negotiating yacht crew salaries shouldn’t solely focus on financial compensation. It’s important to consider non-financial benefits as well, such as accommodation, meals, training opportunities, and time off. These perks can add significant value to the overall compensation package.

Being open to compromise is also key in negotiation. Employers may have budget constraints or specific salary ranges, and it’s important to find a middle ground that satisfies both parties. This can involve considering alternative benefits or perks that may offset a lower base salary.

Furthermore, staying informed about industry trends and networking within the yacht industry can also contribute to career advancement and higher salaries. Attending industry conferences, joining professional associations, and building relationships within the industry can open doors to new opportunities and higher-paying positions.

Examples of Yacht Crew Salary Packages

It’s important for yacht crew members to approach salary negotiations with confidence and professionalism. By understanding the salary structure, conducting research, considering non-financial benefits, being open to compromise, and staying informed about industry trends, crew members can navigate negotiations more effectively and secure competitive salary packages.

The yacht industry presents a promising avenue for career advancement and salary growth. Crew members who actively pursue additional qualifications, accumulate experience, and network within the industry can unlock new opportunities and maximize their earning potential.

To thrive in this industry, it is essential for crew members to stay informed about the latest industry trends and developments. By keeping abreast of changes and innovations, individuals can position themselves as valuable assets to yacht owners and potential employers.

Showcasing valuable skills and maintaining professionalism are also key to career advancement and salary growth. Crew members who consistently deliver high-quality work, display a strong work ethic, and cultivate positive relationships with colleagues and clients are more likely to be recognized and rewarded for their efforts.

Understanding the factors that influence yacht crew salaries is crucial. Factors such as qualifications, experience, position, size of the yacht, and the owner’s budget play a significant role in determining salaries. By comprehending these factors, crew members can negotiate effectively and secure the best possible salary packages.

In summary, by proactively seeking out opportunities for professional development, staying informed, and showcasing their skills, yacht crew members can position themselves for career advancement and salary growth. With dedication and strategic planning, crew members can maximize their earning potential in the yacht industry.

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.

  • Superyachts  are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
  • The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
  • Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."
