Bottom Line
The upscale Old Bahama Bay Resort feels like a luxurious tropical compound, set on 225 acres of beachfront grounds next to a full-service marina. Its 73 elegant, spacious suites are set in plantation-style villas, in king, double and two-bedroom layouts (sleeping up to six) -- all with terraces, water views, kitchenettes or kitchens, and huge marble bathrooms. Freebies include Wi-Fi, water sports, and tennis. There’s a beachfront tiki bar and a nautical-style dinner restaurant. Arrival by seaplane, boat, or private jet (into nearby West End airport) is ideal, but taxis or the hotel shuttle can be arranged for the 45-minute trip from Freeport. Its fairly isolated location is best suited for those seeking an escape from touristy bustle, but travelers craving more a central, livelier property could try the the Grand Lucayan .

Oyster Hotel Review
Sprawling beachfront oasis scattered with bright plantation-style villas.
Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Club unfolds like a private little paradise framed with clear waters in every shade of blue (but strong coastal winds aren’t unusual given the exposed setting). It occupies a sprawling expanse of tropical green grounds, flanked by five miles of private beachfront on one side and a 72-slip marina on the other. A parade of villas dressed in Bahama-bright hues and pastels are aptly named after vibrant tropical flowers, like bougainvillea and bird of paradise. At the resort’s heart, a split-level freshwater pool, framed with sun beds and shady palm trees, cascades down to the beach -- where the thatched-roof activities hut and tiki bar dominate the daytime action. A couple of multicolored market-style stalls (selling shells and souvenirs) enhance the cute island-inspired ambience, and plenty of picnic tables invite alfresco dining on the beach. Shaded hammocks are slung between palm trees here and there, a colorful line-up of water-sports equipment sits ready and waiting on the beach, and there’s a little playground for the kids. Dockside Bar & Grille complements the marina it overlooks with nautical decor, and the lobby exudes British Colonial elegance that continues into the guest rooms.
Grand Bahama’s westernmost tip, near West End private airport
The resort occupies the westernmost tip of Grand Bahama Island , and it's a two-minute walk from West End’s quaint fishing village center. It’s a nine-minute drive from West End private airport, and about 40 minutes by car from Grand Bahama International Airport. Port Lucaya Marina & Marketplace, and Freeport ’s touristy hub of hotels and casinos takes around 45 minutes by car, and the resort shuttle can be arranged if required (for a fee). (Guests should arrange this in advance to guarantee getting there.) Seaplanes from Fort Lauderdale can be caught directly to Old Bahama Bay, and the resort is of course, accessible by boat.
Spacious apartment-like layouts, dressed in British Colonial-style decor with terraces and water views
The brightly colored villa facades give way to Old World luxury in the guest rooms, with more subdued, neutral palettes, marble floors, and British Colonial-style decor blending tropical cues with timeless formality. Botanical fabrics, island-inspired artworks, and white plantation shutters complement dark timber furniture accents, such as elegantly carved headboards and coffee tables. Spacious layouts with French doors opening onto private terraces, lounge areas (with sleeper sofas), and kitchen facilities feel more like upscale apartments than hotel rooms. Junior suites (spanning 600 square feet) are available in king or double queen configurations -- all with kitchens, and a choice of ocean or pool view, or oceanfront categories. Two-bedroom suites, spanning over 1,300 feet, sleep up to six guests, and feature dining areas, two private terraces (with ocean views), three bathrooms, and full kitchens. Kitchen units with large refrigerators, microwaves, stovetops, and dishwashers are provided in all rooms, as are stunning oversized marble bathrooms with large shower/tub combos (some whirlpool), and stone and timber vanities stocked with premium individual toiletries. Free Wi-Fi, washer/dryers, flat-screen TVs, and DVD players are also provided, and closets are stocked with dressing gowns, safes, and umbrellas.
Private beach, freshwater pool, full-service marina, fitness center, spa, free activities, and two restaurants
Features are in abundance at the Old Bahama Bay, so there’s not much need to venture beyond resort confines. The resort's star attraction is its miles of private beach, outfitted with loungers and hammocks. But a close runner up is the split-level pool with a waterfall feature; its ringed with loungers and sun umbrellas. The marina offers plenty of docking space and on-site customs and immigration to process international arrivals. In addition to the private beach, leisure fans are well catered to with an array of free water sports on offer, such as paddleboards, sea kayaks, and snorkel gear. Other outdoor amenities include volleyball, shuffle board, basketball, giant checkers and chess boards, free use of bicycles, and tennis courts that come with free court-time and racket use, although guests must pay for balls. The activities hut located near the pool can arrange ecology tours (such as dolphin spotting and turtle feeding), sunset cruises, and private boat or fishing charters -- the area is known for its exceptional deep sea fishing.
A selection of indoor activities may come in handy if the weather turns bad -- there’s a pool table, ping pong, board games and a Wii console. Massages, Reiki, body treatments and mani/pedis are available in the spa or in-room, and the fitness center is equipped with modern cardio and weight-training equipment. Teaser’s Tiki Bar is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and happy hour. It serves up local specialties and American favorites alongside cocktails and beers, and sometimes features seasonal barbecues, live entertainment, and bonfires. Dockside Bar & Grille features a range of local and international dinner dishes, and both restaurants offer a “Cook Your Catch” option, for guests who’ve managed to catch their own. The hotel gift shop is well-stocked with souvenirs, clothing and accessories, snacks, and basic necessities. Business facilities are provided in the lobby, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. The hotel shuttle can take guests farther afield (for a fee).

Found in the Bahamas ' historic West End village on the western tip of Grand Bahama Island, Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour offers a secluded, less tourist-focused hideaway. But recent guests said this quiet isolation comes at a cost: The nearest restaurants and attractions are located in Freeport – a roughly 30-mile trek southeast of the resort. The distance from Freeport's eateries can be especially difficult since Old Bahama Bay houses only one restaurant. However, the resort does offer plenty of activities. Because of its marina location, fishermen can easily cast a line, swimmers can splash around in the 4,000-square-foot infinity pool, and beachcombers can scuba dive, snorkel or lounge on the sands. Plus, equipment like paddleboards, kayaks and bicycles are covered by the property's $20 daily resort fee. After a day in the sun, retire to your suite. Each features luxurious amenities like colonial-style artisan furnishings, a kitchenette, a bathtub and in-unit laundry machines.

Most recommended, good to know.
West End is the oldest settlement on Grand Bahama Island and is considered its historical capitol. Predating the development of Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour in 1997, West End has enjoyed a colorful history including rum running during Prohibition. Today West End has changed little from days past of life in the Bahama out-islands as a sleepy fishing village known for its succulent conch, monster tuna and wily bonefish.
Grand Bahama is one of the larger islands in the Bahamas, approximately 100 miles long west to east and 12 miles at its widest point north to south. In the mid 1950’s a Virginia financier named Wallace Groves began development of what is today the island’s principal settlement, Freeport. Since that time, Freeport has become a 230 square mile free trade zone, complete with extensive resort development, numerous golf courses, residential projects and major commercial infrastructure. Some say it reminds them of South Florida! The island even has its stories of colorful residents. The famed recluse Howard Hughes spent many of his last years living on Grand Bahama Island, locked behind the doors of his rooftop penthouse in the Xanadu Resort.
In contrast to Feeport’s development, the vast majority of Grand Bahama remains rural in character, and life goes on with a slow out-island tempo. In 1948 while Virginian Wallace Grove was hard at work with his plans for Freeport, England’s Sir Billy Butlin decided to expand his Butlin’s Holiday Camps to West End by building Butlin’s Vacation Village. This lasted only a couple of years. The property sat dormant for awhile until the opening of the Jack Tar Village Resort in 1951 by the Sammons family of Dallas, Texas.
The Jack Tar was one of the most lavish resort properties in the Bahamas and was the first Caribbean all-inclusive hotel. The resort included an airfield, a marina, a complex of canals, a commercial wharf, a 424 room hotel, 16 tennis courts, a 27 hole golf course and the largest saltwater swimming pool in the western hemisphere. Jack Tar Village, along with the West End Community, prospered in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Although the resort was closed in 1988 when Mr. Sammons passed away, some past visitors still inquire about the resort.
Old Bahama Bay Resort opened with 72 marina slips in August 1999. The first hotel rooms came to market in May 2001. In 2004, 25 additional rooms and suites were added, and in 2007 a final 24 units were opened. Today, Old Bahama Bay Resort & Yacht Harbour is a proud member of the Guy Harvey Outpost Expedition portfolio. As always, it sits proudly at the westernmost tip of Grand Bahama Island, welcoming visiting families and water-sport enthusiasts from around the world to this little corner of Bahamian paradise!

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In
FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.
Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.
Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.
Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila
Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.
Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales
The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.
Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas
Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.
Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro
Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.
Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan
Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.
Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo
Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.
Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu
The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO
Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte
The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.
There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.
