Rolls-Royce Phantom: A New Expression
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars recently announced a new expression for Phantom Series II . Adaptations to the eighth-generation Phantom include ‘light-touch’ visual and aesthetic enhancements in line with client requests and feedback.
“Phantom occupies an unrivalled position at the very apex of the luxury world. As our pinnacle product, it represents the very best of Rolls-Royce design, engineering and craftsmanship – a perfect blend of vision, creativity, the finest materials, skill, patience and precision. With Phantom Series II, we have retained and carefully protected everything our clients love about this superlative and luxurious item; subtle, yet meaningful enhancements reflect their evolving tastes and requirements.

“Phantom has always been viewed as the ‘best car in the world’: our Bespoke capabilities mean that, for our clients, it can be the best car for their world, too.” Torsten Müller-Ötvös , Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars
Rolls-Royce products enjoy an expansive lifetime, ultimately becoming timeless expressions of good taste, beauty and luxurious perfection. Phantom occupies a unique, pinnacle position in this regard, being revered for its timeless elegance.
The eighth generation of Phantom was presented in 2017. In creating the new expression, Rolls-Royce designers and engineers have been guided by the requests of clients, who have implored Rolls-Royce not to make any major changes to an already iconic motor car. In answer to these client demands, only the lightest of design touches, embellishments, and adaptations have been incorporated. Indeed, it is not about what should be changed, but in fact, what should be preserved and protected.

A New Expression
The most obvious and important feature to be retained is the Phantom’s commanding presence. This has been further enhanced by a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights above the Pantheon Grille. This gives Phantom new and assertive modernity, reflecting its driver-focused character.
A subtle geometric change to the Pantheon Grille makes the ‘RR’ Badge of Honour and Spirit of Ecstasy mascot more prominent when viewed from the front. The grille itself is now illuminated, a feature debuted and popularised in Ghost. The headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside, and adding further surprise and delight to Phantom’s night-time presence.
Phantom’s side profile retains Rolls-Royce’s signature short front and long rear overhang, long wheelbase and broad c-pillar, the latter giving greater privacy for occupants. The silhouette preserves the elegant key lines running from the Spirit of Ecstasy to the tapering rear tail.

The ‘split-belt’ line begins at the front fender and curves gently towards the rear door, emphasising the car’s long dash-to-axle proportions, before falling gently towards the lantern-like rear lamps. The heavily undercut ‘waft line’ creates a strong shadow, visually signalling the marque’s unequalled ‘Magic Carpet Ride’.
The side profile is further enhanced with a suite of new wheels. A 3D, milled, stainless steel wheel with triangular facets is available to commission in a fully or part-polished finish. Alternatively, the Phantom may be graced with a truly elegant disc wheel, recalling the romance of 1920’s Rolls-Royce motor cars. This disc wheel is produced in both polished stainless steel and black lacquer, perfectly encapsulating the sense of flight on land.
Responding to Phantom clients who have previously requested a darkened chrome grille surround, black bonnet reins, windscreen surround and side frame finishers, these may now be commissioned. This aesthetic now enables Rolls-Royce to transform the Phantom into the lightest of light or the darkest of dark appearances.

Phantom’s sumptuous interior remains almost unaltered: the steering wheel has been made slightly thicker, providing a more connected and immediate point of contact for the owner-driver.
Phantom and Phantom Extended have distinct characters of their own, representing two different seats of power. Phantom is now predominantly favoured by the ever-increasing number of clients wishing to be in the driving seat themselves. For those preferring to command the road from the rear seat, Phantom Extended offers the definitive super-luxurious chauffeur-driven experience.
Rolls-Royce Connected
Now, Phantom includes the debut of ‘ Rolls-Royce Connected ’. This enables the owner to send an address directly to the motor car from Whispers, the Rolls-Royce private member’s Application , providing seamless navigation to an event, restaurant, dealership or even the Home of Rolls-Royce itself.
‘ Rolls-Royce Connected’ also displays the motor car’s location, security status and current ‘health’ condition on Whispers; at the touch of a button, the owner can contact a preferred dealership for any servicing requirements or information about the car.
The ‘Poles Of Luxury’
As the marque’s pinnacle product, Phantom attracts an elite stratum of Rolls-Royce clients. Established and successful, at the top of their field and often in the public eye, these are determined and demanding people. It is no coincidence that Phantom attracts the most ambitious and challenging Bespoke commissions ever undertaken by Rolls-Royce .

The resulting creations − each an artistic masterpiece in its own right − illustrate a broader truth: since its inception, Phantom has always been whatever the client wants it to be; not only the ‘best car in the world’ but the best car for them and their world.
Self-evidently, there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ Phantom client. Spanning the ‘poles of luxury’, they may be ever-younger or older, modern or traditional, self-made or from long-established wealth. Their commissions reflect a full spectrum of interests and influences. At one extreme, Phantom takes on a subversive, almost rebellious character – youthful, dynamic and daring. On the other, Phantom transforms into an ode to luxury grandeur and timelessness.
The challenge of the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective is to accommodate this vast expanse of client characteristics and desires in one pinnacle product. The eighth-generation Phantom has thus been deliberately designed to offer a ‘blank canvas’ for Bespoke personalisation, capable of becoming whatever the client wishes it to be, and a true reflection of their individual style and character.
Phantom’s great strength and appeal are that it allows clients to position themselves anywhere between these ‘poles of luxury’, defining luxury on their own terms. And wherever that point happens to lie, they have the assurance that Phantom itself is − technically, materially, aesthetically and dynamically − still the ‘best car in the world’.

Phantom Platino: The Return Of Fine Textiles
To mark the introduction of Phantom Series II and to illustrate Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke capability, the marque has created a new Bespoke masterpiece, Phantom Platino, named after the silver-white finish of the coveted and precious metal, platinum.
Phantom Platino continues Rolls-Royce’s exploration into fabric interiors, a story which began in 2015 with the launch of Serenity, a truly Bespoke Phantom with a hand-painted, hand-embroidered silk interior. Heralding the next step in this significant journey, Phantom Platino introduces materials other than leather, an area of exploration for Rolls-Royce and a move that demonstrates a greater acceptance of alternative interior upholsteries.
Echoing the marque’s formative days, the front seats of Phantom Platino are finished in fine Rolls-Royce leather, while those in the rear are upholstered in fabric.
The beautiful tone-on-tone of Platino’s interior is achieved by combining two different fabrics; one created in an Italian mill for its durable yet luxurious appearance, the other derived from bamboo fibres, selected for its lustrous finish.

Both materials share an original repeating pattern based on an abstract interpretation of the Spirit of Ecstasy. In the silken textile, the design is smaller and woven into the fabric to create a more visually stimulating finish. It also appears in Phantom’s Gallery, right in the occupant’s line of sight, and on key touchpoints such as the armrest and centre console.
The bamboo fabric is embroidered with larger icons, presenting a tufted appearance commonly found in interior design. This more resilient material is placed on the lower elements of the interior where they will need to withstand most contact.
The same design also appears on Phantom’s dashboard timepiece. The surround is made from a 3D printed ceramic, a truly contemporary execution of traditional material. Set into an iced finish woodset, the tonal properties of the interior take Phantom to a beautiful and unsurpassed level of opulence.
The largest canvas in Phantom is the Starlight Headliner. In a unique design created especially for Rolls-Royce Platino, the ‘stars’ are placed to draw the eye rearwards, with whimsical shooting stars following the sweeping arc of the pattern.
Torsten Müller-Ötvös , Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, says, “We are acutely conscious of our clients’ esteem for and love of their Phantoms. They felt it could not be improved; but while naturally respecting that view, we believe it is always possible, indeed necessary, to gently go further in our pursuit of absolute perfection.
“The subtle changes we have made for the new Phantom Series II have all been minutely considered and meticulously executed. As Sir Henry Royce himself said: ‘Small things make perfection, but perfection is no small thing’.”

THE PINNACLE OF ROLLS-ROYCE
An untameable legend. An icon for icons. Phantom Series II exists alone at the apex of luxury. Its unprecedented design is an evolution in mastery — invigorating the mavericks who command its splendour.

EXPRESSIONS OF AN ICON
Phantom Series II makes its arrival known through bold and original statements. Sublime features are underpinned by meticulous craft and engineering, resulting in an authoritative presence that demands both awe and attention.

Inimitable in style, the embodiment of confidence, Phantom Series II boldly defines new standards of excellence.

AN INTIMATE EXHIBITION
Every Phantom Series II is home to The Gallery — a glass enclosure exhibiting Bespoke works of art, spanning the entire length of the motor car’s fascia. In this Gallery installation, Ruthenium Bloom, artisans were inspired by the delicate contours of flowers for their geometric design, laser-cut and engraved into ruthenium-coated layers.

THE MAGNIFICENCE WITHIN
The interior of Phantom Series II is a sublime extension of its exterior. Attention to detail is evident. Craftsmanship is beyond comparison.

What's New for 2023?
The Phantom receives a light styling makeover for 2023 that includes updates to the car’s iconic Pantheon grille and revised headlamps that add a slightly more modern—but not too modern—appearance. New wheel designs round out the exterior enhancements, but should you want more than a “standard Rolls” the company is launching a limited-edition Phantom Platino model through its Bespoke coachbuilding service. The Platino wears special silver-white paint and features an interior covered in hand-embroidered silk, special leather, and bamboo fiber-based cloth.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
One does not simply choose a Phantom—or any Rolls-Royce for that matter—off dealer lot. No. These cars are built to the exacting requirements of the millionaires and billionaires who purchase them—and these carriages of the rich are often customized down to the last detail. We won't even begin to suggest which special-order options are worth adding because, well, how would we know? We would, however, suggest springing for the Extended Wheelbase model to take advantage of its limousine-like rear-seat legroom. As they say, go big or go home.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
Prodigious power is provided by a silken 563-hp twin-turbo V-12 paired with an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. Acceleration is brisk, but Rolls-Royce's claimed 5.1-second zero-to-60-mph time isn't anything you'd appreciate your chauffeur trying to replicate. The Phantom is better suited to easing along lazily; delicate inputs to throttle and steering are what it likes best. To say that the ride is smooth would be an understatement—imagine being carried aloft on a fluffy cloud. The Phantom practically levitates over the road; it features a pothole-spotting camera that helps the suspension adapt to road imperfections in real time. It's a library-quiet, sensory-deprivation cocoon.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
A Phantom owner's conspicuous consumption is matched by the car's penchant for consuming fuel. The EPA's fuel-economy estimates run as low as 12-mpg city, although the Phantom's 20-mpg highway rating actually bests the smaller Rolls-Royce Ghost's by 2 mpg. If we ever are lucky enough to have a chance to put the Phantom through our 200-mile highway fuel-economy test, we'll update this story with test results. For more information about the Phantom's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Acres of wood, metal accents, and vast expanses of supple leather cover the cabin, which is no surprise for a car of this class. But there’s so much more: for instance, should you want to use your Phantom to support the arts, you can specify custom artwork in place of the standard instrument panel trim. Rolls-Royce offers both a standard- and long-wheelbase version of the Phantom, the latter stretched by 8.6 inches, much of which results as additional rear-seat legroom. Rear-hinged coach doors open to allow graceful and dramatic arrivals and departures. Rear-seat passengers can be treated to myriad luxuries such as deep-pile carpeted floor mats, power-adjustable seats with massage, a refrigerated console compartment for libations, remote controls for the infotainment system, and much, much more.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Speaking of infotainment, the Phantom comes standard with a large infotainment display artfully hidden behind a glass panel that stretches the full width of the dashboard. It's controlled via a rotary knob on the center console. Lest you think that rear-seat passengers are left out of the technology loop, the Phantom also features touchscreens that motor down from each of the front seatbacks to provide access to the car's audio and navigation systems, as well as a live-TV tuner so passengers won't fall behind on their favorite shows or sports while on the way to their next engagement.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
The Phantom's dizzying array of optional tech includes night vision and a distinct laser-light system, but Rolls-Royce also offers more conventional driver-assistance features such as forward-collision and lane-departure warnings as standard. For more information about the Phantom's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard forward-collision warning
- Standard lane-departure warning
- Available adaptive cruise control with night vision
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Like the Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV and the smaller Ghost sedan , the Phantom comes with Rolls-Royce's four-year/unlimited-mile warranty and maintenance package as standard.
- Limited warranty covers 4 years or unlimited miles
- Powertrain warranty covers 4 years or unlimited miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for 4 years or unlimited miles

2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom With $117,000 Just In Options For Sale
Home » 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom With $117,000 Just In Options For Sale
Adrian Padeanu
November 20, 2023 / 2 minutes read

Ultra-luxury cars are hit the hardest by depreciation, and this Rolls-Royce Phantom is a perfect example of how a vehicle’s value significantly drops a few short years after rolling off the assembly line. Listed on Cars & Bids , this 2018 posh sedan originally retailed for a cool $570,360. We all know there’s no such thing as a standard RR but this one takes the cake since it has a whopping $117,610 just in options.
Yes, someone paid nearly the equivalent of a new BMW 760i just for extra features for this lavishly equipped Phantom. The auction on C&B – for which the owner has set a reserve price – ends in two days, and it has 14 bids at the moment of writing. Predictably, the highest bid is nowhere near the original asking price since it’s “only” at $165,500. That’s less than a third of what the first buyer paid for the car, and while the final bid is likely to be higher, we can’t imagine it’ll be even remotely close to the original sticker price.
Registered in California, the stately sedan meticulously built in Goodwood has racked up 8,200 miles so far and hasn’t been involved in any accidents. The Phantom’s Monroney decal is absolutely fascinating, revealing the two-tone paint alone costs about $35,000 if we include the body-colored wheel centers. The owner paid just about the same amount of money for the Phantom Package and $9,650 for the sound system. The black rear curtains were another $7,225, while the fancy clock increased the final bill by $4,850.
This is a Series I Phantom VIII as the Series II was introduced in mid-2022 with a series of discreet updates. It’s not in perfect condition as the seller mentions a few chips on the front bumper while the paint protection film on the driver-side mirror is peeling off. Inside, the outer front seat bolsters are showing creases while the infotainment system doesn’t always reveal itself after pushing the button.
The Phantom remains the epitome of luxury in the automotive segment, and this car could be a relative bargain given its exorbitant initial price. The sheer amount of options isn’t necessarily a big surprise since Rolls-Royce said the average price of a car sold in 2022 was 500,000 euros . That works out to $546,000 at current exchange rates.

I am looking forward to meeting our esteemed clients, dealers, friends of the marque and media at this year’s gathering. Their passion for unique luxury experiences and magnificent creations is stronger than ever, as demonstrated by these vivacious and spirited commissions.” Boris Weletzky, Regional Director UK, Europe, Russia and Central Asia, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars From 20 th April 2023, patrons of luxury will convene at Salon Privé, a highly exclusive Concours d’Élégance, in the grounds of Royal Chelsea Hospital, London. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will showcase two special commissions at the event – Phantom Extended and Ghost. Each of these commissions is indicative of Rolls-Royce’s peerless fluency in Bespoke and demonstrates the extensive scope of the marque’s craft, design and engineering competencies. ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM SERIES II Last year, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars announced a new expression for Phantom and Phantom Extended — subtle, ‘light touch’ aesthetic enhancements to the world’s most luxurious motor car. The iconic Pantheon Grille has been further enhanced by a new polished horizontal line between the daytime running lights above the Pantheon Grille, giving the motor car a new assertive modernity. The headlights are graced with intricate laser-cut bezel starlights, creating a visual connection with the Starlight Headliner inside, and adding further surprise and delight to Phantom's night-time presence. Phantom Extended offers the indulgence of enhanced rear seating space with no compromise to Phantom’s driving dynamics. This motor car is an exquisite sanctuary, a heaven of serenity swathed in sumptuous design — a place where ideas flourish, greatest achievements are made and thoughts form. It is truly luxuriance expanded. Following its global launch on the French Riviera last summer, Phantom Extended will make its UK public debut at this year’s Salon Privé in London; an exclusive Phantom Extended has been curated in recognition of this moment. Conveying the creativity, imagination and tradition that exists at the heart of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, a vibrant Belladonna Purple exterior is balanced by a Black leather interior with Grace White accents. ROLLS-ROYCE GHOST Launched in 2020 Rolls-Royce Ghost, is the latest iteration of the most successful product in the marque’s storied 119-year history. The exterior’s clean and simple form provides the perfect, pure canvas for personal expression. This particular commission is finished in Sagano Green and an Arctic White single coachline elegantly completes the exterior. Inside, the Serenity Green leather on the secondary panels, seat piping, seat belts and indicator stalks, echoes the exterior hue. Spanning the fascia and topping the centre console between the front seats is Obsidian Ayous with a rich open-pore texture that introduces a natural aura to Ghost’s contemporary cabin.

See Chinese President Xi Jinping's luxurious 18-foot sedan — and how it compares to Biden's 'Beast' Cadillac
- Chinese President Xi Jinping is in the United States this week.
- He travels with a custom-built sedan by Chinese brand Hongqi.
- It's a very different car than the White House's Cadillac, nicknamed Beast.

As Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives for his meetings with President Joe Biden and business leaders this week, he won't be chauffeured in a vehicle familiar to many Americans.
Instead, the leader will be whisked through California streets in his own state vehicle — much like when American heads of state travel abroad.
Xi's steed of choice is made by Honqi, a Chinese automaker that also sells several car and SUV models to the public.
The manufacturer has been the source of state vehicles for over a decade. The name means Red Flag, the symbol of communism.
The L5, currently the most expensive Chinese car ever produced, has a relatively long length of 5.555 meters (an homage to the lucky number).
Consumer versions go for the equivalent of about $800,000, according to Bloomberg.
Its design is based on a classic model from the 1960s known as a CA770.
Discontinued in the 1980's, the CA770 was based on a Chrysler Imperial.
The exact specs of Xi’s state version of the L5 aren't known, but the consumer versions aren’t shy on power and luxury.
The car is roughly comparable to a Rolls-Royce Phantom, at least based on looks.
The L5 is powered by a mighty 6.0-liter V12 engine, depending on the configuration — and state leaders are known to opt for souped-up versions.
It's heavy, too. Consumer versions without armor plating weigh over three tons.
Longtime autos journalist Jeremy Clarkson once took the L5 for a spin and noted luxurious touches like rosewood paneling and jade ornaments.
"It's like a cartoon baddie's car," he said , adding that it wasn't very fast thanks to the weight.
But no matter how powerful and stately of a domestic option for Xi, the L5 is still overshadowed by the rolling Oval Office that’ll whisk Biden to and from meetings in California this week.
The custom Cadillac is one of the most recognizable symbols of presidential travel.
The latest version debuted in 2018 after being commissioned by Barack Obama in 2014.
Among other unique features, the Beast is identifiable by presidential seals on the doors.
The Beast goes for about $1.5 million and is chock-full of features to make it (almost) a fully loaded White House on wheels.
It's basically just a super-stretched Cadillac XT6 sedan, only much much more secure and powerful.
Most of The Beast’s details are closely guarded by the Secret Service, but we do know it weighs up to 20,000 pounds, seats seven people, and has a powerful engine.
It's also believed to be bullet- and blast-proof with other special protections for chemical attacks, according to various reports throughout the years.
Not much is known about the protective features of Xi's L5.
He is accompanied by his chief of staff, Cai Qi, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to the state news reports.

40/50 hp, 7,668 cc OHV inline six-cylinder engine, dual ignition with coil and magneto, four-speed manual gearbox, solid front axle and underslung live rear axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and four-wheel servo-assisted brakes.
- Fascinating history, including long-term ownership in Kenya
- Phantom II Continental chassis
- Same ownership for 25 years
The New Phantom, as Rolls-Royce originally called the Phantom I, differed from its predecessor, the Silver Ghost, mainly in its engine design. An overhead-valve unit of a mammoth 7,668 cc, it incorporated a removable aluminium cylinder head. The Phantom II, introduced in 1929, marked Henry Royce’s last design and introduced an improved chassis.
Much lower than its predecessors, the Phantom II chassis featured semi-elliptic leaf springs all around, adjustable shock absorbers and an underslung rear axle. Central lubrication was fitted, and the engine was uprated with new combustion chambers and improved manifolds, while the gearbox now offered synchronised third and top gears.
The much rarer, pricier and sportier Continental variant, however, was first available toward the end of 1930 and featured flatter springs than the saloons and limousines, with twin Hartford dampers on the front. The engine was modified with higher compression and a high-lift camshaft, and in concert with a higher-ratio rear axle, the Continental provided high-speed, long-distance touring capabilities in keeping with its name. Most Continentals, as this one, used the shorter chassis with a 144-inch wheelbase. Capable of 95 mph, the Phantom II Continental was the ultimate grand tourer of the era, and while it would certainly turn heads from Monte Carlo to St. Moritz, it was aimed squarely at the owner/driver compared to the regular Phantom II, which was frequently chauffeur-driven.
Bodies for the Continentals were supplied mainly by Park Ward, Hooper and others, but the Thrupp & Maberly sports saloons were particularly graceful. Some Continental owners preferred to modify their cars with custom-built open bodies. This particular example, 100 MS, was delivered new with Thrupp & Maberly saloon coachwork on the 16th September 1932 to Mr. W.R. Rons in Great Britain. During the 1950s, 100 MS made its way to Kenya, and during the 1970s, its then-owner commissioned Mr. Roger F. Tanner to re-body it as a boattailed touring car. In 1977, 100 MS was sold to Mr. H. Baungaard of Denmark, who in turn sold it to the current owner in 1985.
Since then, 100 MS has been very well maintained within the private museum of the current owner, and it has been taken out and driven regularly. Recent inspection confirms that both the steel and wooden bodywork are in very good condition, as is the interior and brightwork. The car appears to be mechanically fit and starts on the button, with all cylinders firing properly.
Offered complete with a history file including all invoices from 1985, the old title dated 1977 from the Republic of Kenya and the current Danish registration document, 100 MS is a very unique Rolls-Royce, not only finished in striking colours but also with wooden boattail coachwork that is at once elegant and particularly appealing.

OK CONTINUE YOUR JOURNEY The pinnacle Rolls-Royce, Phantom Series II is a legendary maverick and icon of inimitable perfection.
The eighth generation of Phantom was presented in 2017. In creating the new expression, Rolls-Royce designers and engineers have been guided by the requests of clients, who have implored Rolls-Royce not to make any major changes to an already iconic motor car.
