Home › The Fleet › Qilak 66

End 2018 we delivered custom sailing yacht Qilak 66, to its Belgian owners – father, son and daughter – in the port of Zeebrugge. Safety and robustness were important criteria for them. This is reflected in the design by Owen Clarke Yacht Design from England. It features a collision bulkhead in the forepeak, 10 mm ice reinforcement skin plates, an ice-girder and 5 watertight doors. The ship is built to sail with guests in high latitude areas, pole to pole as the owner puts it. The chartering will initially be done from Tromsø in Norway, from where the yacht will put into Spitsbergen, Iceland and Greenland. The ultimate goal is to sail to the Southern Hemisphere and navigate the Beagle Canal in southern Chile and Argentina.

Owner and captain Phil said on delivery: “Forty years of dreaming, four years of planning and now, after one and a half years of building, the time has finally come. This is one of the best days of my life! To do this together with my son and daughter is very special for me, and I really look forward to making fantastic trips aboard Qilak and showing guests the beautiful world in the North and far South.” The beautiful scenic photos shown here from one of those charter trips to Spitsbergen were made by www.andyexplorestheworld.com.

Vitters 3090

Vitters delivers 59m sailing yacht Maximus

The 59-metre Vitters sailing yacht Maximus , formerly known as Project 3090 , has been delivered. She made her first stop in the Cornish town of  Falmouth in the UK, and will continue her journey to the Caribbean for the regatta season.

Work began on the ketch-rigged sailing yacht in summer 2021 and the project was seen in daylight for the first time in May 2022 when the hull briefly left the construction shed in Zwartsluis to be turned. The 59-metre Maximus is now the third largest Vitters yacht on the water after the 85.9-metre Aquijo and 66-metre Anatta .

Vitters confirmed that the project is designed as a performance cruiser with an interior volume of 299 GT and design and naval architecture by Germán Frers . The shipyard later described the model as a "wolf in sheep's clothing" with twin rudders and a lifting keel with a minimum draught of five metres and a maximum draught of eight metres.

Other details revealed by the newly released images show a flush deck and a raised deckhouse for a classic look, plus a saloon with wraparound windows for panoramic views while on board.

Maximus was one of three projects currently under construction at the shipyard, together with Project 4090 , a 44-metre fast cruising sloop due to hit the water in 2024, and the 69-metre Vitters 3094 (Project Zero) which has been designed in collaboration with Vripack .

Following her delivery, Maximus will make a splash on the regatta circuit at the St Barths Bucket 2024.

Route 66 // ISA Yachts

The ancona-based shipyard isa yachts presents the route 66 currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in spring 2017..

The project name ROUTE 66 is based on the famous highway route in the United States which was a 4.000 KM street from Chicago (Illinois) to Santa Monica (California).  The name embodied freedom, which is also the concept of this motor yacht concept without compromising the space and comfort that the owner would expect from a steel and aluminum displacement yacht. The overall beauty of yachts over the years has been lost to interior space, on the contrary ROUTE 66’s offers space for owners who love the sea and like to be outside.

Key Features: Elegant lines with balanced proportions of the superstructure Sleek hull increasing efficiency and motion comfort Large outdoor spaces on all three decks – Very spacious beach club including complete wellness center

ROUTE 66 is a motor yacht with lots of space in relation to the total volume and her lines are sleek and graceful. The design does not achieve extra deck space by stacking the decks, there is not the piled-up effect – one layer after the other, the philosophy of the whole concept is to guarantee the owners space and comfort they would expect.

Route 66 ISA Yachts

Developed from the 65m Granturismo platform, this full displacement yacht is a 4-decks vessel with an aluminum superstructure and steel hull which architectural structure is based on a strong contrast between the harmonious and curvaceous lines of the decks and the rigorous and diamond-like geometry of the transom and of the sundeck. The hull shape and bow are optimized for both efficiency and comfort. Her 11-meter beam confers ROUTE 66 a sleek and elegant line.

The interior layout emphasizes the osmosis between indoor and outdoor areas. The main deck saloon presents the idea of a lounge which opens to the cockpit with a unique perception of spaces. The dining room, situated forward of the salon, totally enjoys the light coming from the full height side bulkhead windows. The enormous beach area can be easily shaped as a real sensorial SPA, as the layout easily allows a sauna, an emotional shower, and hammam.

Route 66 ISA Yachts

The interior layout is completed by the 5 guest cabins plus the master suite so that ROUTE 66 can accommodate 12 guests. Forward the flush deck can easily enclose an helipad. Mooring area and tender garage for 8m-rescue tender and jet skies are underneath this area. The main tender garage is located starboard on the lower deck opposite to the gym.

Powered by 2 CAT engines, this 66M designed by Andrea Vallicelli, can reach 18 knots max and cruises at 16 knots. Thanks to a spectacular stern and an aggressive plum bow, this outstanding 66 meters is destined to become an icon yacht in its segment.

The naval architecture is developed in-house by ISA Yachts Technical Department.

Super Yacht 66-Meter Catamaran “Hodor” : A Toy Box

66 meter sailing yacht

Hodor is a 77-meter-long catamaran built to accompany one of the world’s largest superyachts. This all-aluminum support boat includes all of the nautical equipment needed for a day on the water as well as a luxurious and sophisticated design. It’s a floating dream for adventure enthusiasts and thrill-seekers.

Introducing the Hodor catamaran

At 66 meters long, Hodor is the world’s largest “shadow cat,” designed to efficiently store, maintain, launch, and recover superyacht toys. Australian naval architect Incat Crowther, best known for designing high-speed catamaran ferries, created Hodor based on an all-aluminium 55-meter fast ferry platform. The hull has been stretched by 11 meters to accommodate the toys and exact specifications of the 17 full-time crew members who keep the yacht running on a day-to-day basis.

The interior of Hodor is as impressive as the exterior, with high-end furnishings and a fully stocked bar. The guest lounge walls and staircase feature laser-cut Corian panels with Moorish design. The crew quarters are also spacious, with light-filled, open-plan communal areas and generous cabins with full-sized bathrooms.

66 meter sailing yacht

Toys on board Hodor

Hodor is packed with all sorts of toys, there are nine jet skis, four Yamaha quad bikes, two Yamaha side-by-side ATVs, four Yamaha TW200 trail motorcycles, two Laser dinghies, and one Hobie Cat stored in the huge garage below deck. Additionally, there’s a Seamagine Aurora-3 submersible, which is yet to be delivered, and a 17-meter Nor-Tech 560 Sport center console, which takes the spot of the largest beast on board.

The vessel is designed to accommodate big and bulky items such as the Nor-Tech, which can be safely handled thanks to Incat Crowther’s existing catamaran design. The design also allows for a fast launch and recovery system, which is scalable to a suitable size, allowing the chase boat to be launched easily and quickly between the catamaran hulls.

66 meter sailing yacht

“We designed the hull with the triple objective of increasing the volume, performance and seaworthiness of the CNB 66. This yacht will be able to guarantee long distances, even with a reduced crew of two people.”

Philippe briand, naval architect of the cnb 66.

66 meter sailing yacht

Born to make you feel a family atmosphere in harmony with the sea.

With its welcoming family atmosphere, the CNB 66 has been designed to be the biggest sailboat that can be handled by a family crew. It can be equipped with a hydraulic furling boom, developed through an exclusive collaboration project with Hall Spars. Endowed with a carbon bowsprit, its elegant silhouette encloses precious volumes put to best use by our know-how.

Externally, the two areas, for relaxation and manoeuvring, are clearly separate. As on one-off models, we made every effort to minimise differences in levels everywhere to facilitate movement without undermining safety. And furthermore, what sailboat this size can boast a tender garage that enables a 3.25 m tender to be boarded in less than a minute? Undoubtedly, the CNB 66 redefines the range of possibilities for a 20 m (66 ft) yacht. It is no surprise that even before its launch, seven owners from Europe, Australia and Mexico decided to trust us.

The Dali was just starting a 27-day voyage.

The ship had spent two days in Baltimore’s port before setting off.

The side of a large ship, painted blue, with the words “Dali” and “Singapore,” sitting at a port.

By Claire Moses and Jenny Gross

  • Published March 26, 2024 Updated March 27, 2024

The Dali was less than 30 minutes into its planned 27-day journey when the ship ran into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday.

The ship, which was sailing under the Singaporean flag, was on its way to Sri Lanka and was supposed to arrive there on April 22, according to VesselFinder, a ship tracking website.

The Dali, which is nearly 1,000 feet long, left the Baltimore port around 1 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday. The ship had two pilots onboard, according to a statement by its owners, Grace Ocean Investment. There were 22 crew members on board, the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore said in a statement. There were no reports of any injuries, Grace Ocean said.

Before heading off on its voyage, the Dali had returned to the United States from Panama on March 19, harboring in New York. It then arrived on Saturday in Baltimore, where it spent two days in the port.

Maersk, the shipping giant, said in a statement on Tuesday that it had chartered the vessel, which was carrying Maersk cargo. No Maersk crew and personnel were onboard, the statement said, adding that the company was monitoring the investigations being carried out by the authorities and by Synergy Group, the company that was operating the vessel.

“We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” the Maersk statement said.

The Dali was built in 2015 by the South Korea-based Hyundai Heavy Industries. The following year, the ship was involved in a minor incident when it hit a stone wall at the port of Antwerp . The Dali sustained damage at the time, but no one was injured.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

What to know about the cargo ship Dali, a mid-sized ocean monster that took down a Baltimore bridge

Crews were set to begin removing the wreckage of a collapsed highway bridge in Baltimore on Friday. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said a large crane, which can lift up to 1,000 tons, would be one of at least two used to clear the channel of the twisted metal and concrete remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and the cargo ship that collided with it this week.

Investigators began collecting evidence Wednesday from the cargo ship that plowed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge and caused its collapse, while in the waters below divers searched through twisted metal for several construction workers who plunged into the harbor and were feared dead. Here’s what to know about the cargo ship Dali that crashed into Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse and leaving six bridge construction workers presumed dead.

MONSTERS OF THE OCEAN

If stood upright, the Dali would reach almost to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris or about two-thirds of the way up the Empire State Building in New York.

It can carry the equivalent of almost 10,000 standard-sized metal shipping containers, and at the time of the accident was carrying nearly 4,700 containers. But while those figures are impressive, the Dali pales in comparison to the world’s largest container ships, which can carry more than 24,000 containers. There are environmental and economic advantages to operating giant container ships , but their sheer size and weight make them difficult to maneuver and stop — especially when something goes wrong.

Dali length: 984 feet (300 meters). Weight: 95,000 tons when empty.

Capacity: 10,000 20-foot (6-meter) containers.

MAYDAY CALL SAVES LIVES

The ship shares a name with one of history’s most celebrated artists, Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali.

Built by South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders, the Dali was launched in late 2014. It’s owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd, flies a Singapore flag and is powered by diesel engines.

Danish shipping giant Maersk had chartered the Dali for a planned trip from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, but the ship didn’t get far, with the crew sending a mayday call early Tuesday saying they had lost power and had no control of the steering system. Minutes later, the ship rammed one of the bridge’s columns, causing the entire structure to collapse within seconds.

The ship was moving at about 8 knots, or 9 mph (15 kph). The mayday gave just enough time for authorities to stop bridge traffic and likely prevent more deaths , but not enough time to clear the construction crew that was filling potholes on the bridge. Divers on Wednesday recovered the bodies of two of the workers.

All of the nearly two dozen crew members from the Dali were accounted for after the accident, with one taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

PASSED PREVIOUS INSPECTIONS

The Dali passed a June 2023 inspection in Chile. A faulty pressure gauge for the fuel heaters was identified but fixed before the vessel left the port, according to authorities. The Dali was then inspected in September by the U.S. Coast Guard in New York, and no problems were found. Before it left Baltimore, the ship underwent routine engine maintenance, according to the Coast Guard.

Federal and state officials say the crash appears to be an accident.

The Coast Guard has downloaded the voyage data recorder and sent it to the National Transportation Safety Board, which is building a timeline of what led to the crash, and a preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks. Singapore also plans to carry out its own investigation, which it says will be to identify lessons for the future rather than determine liability.

WHAT’S NEXT

In addition to trying to clear the channel floor of the bridge debris, officials will need to assess the damage to the Dali and make sure it doesn’t leak fuel or sink. Investigators found damage to at least 13 containers on the ship.

The Dali will then likely be towed back to the port and the cargo offloaded.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg says it’s too early to say how long it will take to reopen the Port of Baltimore or replace the destroyed bridge. He noted it initially took five years to build the bridge .
