Showfish @ The Montauk Yacht Club

Each season Montauk experiences changes; venues change names, chefs, and menus.  The Montauk Yacht Club has done all three.

Although the venue is back to the original name, the Montauk Yacht Club , the restaurant name, Showfish remains the same. However, what is being prepared in the kitchen and who is responsible for it, has most definitely changed. Executive Chef Matt Murphy has joined the staff at Showfish and he’s created a new menu with a fresh new Back-to-Basics concept.  His food design is ingredient driven, focusing on the freshest locally-sourced, fish and farm-to-table, which together inspire unique culinary creations.   Chef Murphy has built an impressive resume including numerous high-profile restaurants, which as we discovered on our visit, is also a testament to his culinary talents.

Tucked away in the harbor, going to the Montauk Yach Club is like arriving at an island beach resort. As we walked through the passageway from the parking area, the view of the marina is breathtaking. After a short walk on the docks, we headed to the outdoor pool bar for a cocktail.  As we joined another group who were enjoying some late afternoon cocktails after a day in the sun, the bartender took our order, and our evening of quality service, tasty drinks and outstanding food had begun.

The skilled bartenders mixed a light and refreshing Sorrento Spritz , with prosecco, limoncello, fresh berries, and mint, as well as a few Mezcal Negroni’s , a blend of mezcal, carpano antica, and Campari: a unique take on a traditional Negroni. Throughout the evening, we also enjoyed a few of the wines by the glass; Punica Samas Vermentino- Sardinia, Italy, Minuty- Porvence, Franc, Villebois Sancerre- Loire Valley, France, and Daou Cabernet Sauvignon-Paso Robles, California. Each selection was quite pleasing and a paired well with our meals.

One of the first things we noticed upon entering the open, airy, dining area was that the Historical Pictures of Montauk are once again adorning the walls. Each one representing a remembrance of what Montauk used to be; providing character and historical significance to the nautically inspired décor of the room.

As we began our culinary journey, the sun was setting and our view of the marina beyond the open glass doors lining the dining room became even more beautiful. We watched in awe as the sky was painted with pale tints of orange and pink.

Replacing bread service, the MYC Cacio Pepe Pizza is a wonderful way to begin the meal. I would take this brick oven, thin crusted crisp pie with a blend of creamy garlic and pecorino cheese instead of bread at any meal. Paired with either his delicate, baby gem Caesar Salad with pickled red onion, topped with fresh parmesan and anchovy fillets, or the artisan greens House Salad with a light herb vinegarette and crispy pumpkin seeds, they would make a great, simple meal.

If shellfish is what you enjoy, as I do, the order of Saffron Curry Mussels topped with grilled bread for dipping is one way to go. The sauce is gently balanced in a way that neither the curry, saffron, garlic, wine, or sriracha take over the flavor- they work together creating a lovely aromatic taste. Although I don’t personally enjoy oysters, the rest of our party certainly did, describing them as, “Creamy and plump Devil’s Island Oysters accented perfectly with the sweet/tart addition of the dill, lemon and granny smith apple.”

We moved on to a few main dishes, although as designed, everything we had so far was generously portioned and quite sharable.  The Tomato & Clam Pasta consists of a nice bowl of fettuccine in a light creamy clam, tomato, lemon and basil sauce. A lovely summer pasta offering clean fresh flavors.  Another wonderful choice is the Salmon with a succulent buttery glaze served atop wasabi puree, along with peas, shallots, and asparagus all dressed with gentle shaved almond slivers and pea tendrils. Personally, my first choice would be the Butter Poached Lobster . A sure palate pleaser with the herb infused buttery, tender lobster, accented by the the characteristically chewy texture of farro, and the added sweetness of the candied ginger, which was all enhanced with the mild anise essence of the fennel dressing- a uniquely outstanding dish. However, the number one table favorite was the perfectly seared Tuna Steak plated with a gentle carrot puree, ginger, and a very fluffy coconut rice. The range of flavors of the sides for this final meal were well balanced and perfectly designed to complement the freshness of the tuna.

Each meal, from start to finish, was expertly balanced for texture, flavor, and of course presentation! Chef Matt Murphy has it down to a science.   With so many tasty dishes to choose from, and believe it or not there’s a few we haven’t experienced yet, I’m looking forward to returning to Showfish for another wonderful meal.

Went here again for a conference recently, great food and very accommodating staff. The place looks great and has really been overhauled and kept up. Awesome little fitness room, two pools and a small sauna. My only gripe was the Wi-Fi didn't work the whole 2 days or so I was there. Otherwise it was excellent! A really nice hotel out in Montauk, recommended.

Stayed here for a few days and found the accommodations to be very nice. I was never at the facility previous to Gurney's owning and renovating it. It looks like they really did a nice job with the inside. Everything is new and bright. That being said some of the siding on the outside and the pier/decks are a little worse for wear. I used the gym while I was here but not the pool. The room is fairly decent sized and has an excellent amount of workout machines. The food was good, sort of like something you'd have at a wedding. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. I think they said they removed the spa, so I'm not sure if they are putting that back or what. Very nice place, enjoyed our stay.

Came for drinks and $1 oysters. Good beers. I have no idea if the food is good. The oysters have green apple and citrus. Very yummy. I am told it's a big scene on the weekends. Showfish. We anchored our boat and came by dinghy. We met up with a guy at the bar who paddles boarded over. He claims to have paddle boarded from Montauk lighthouse to block island. (He insisted I add that). What's not the like!

We enjoyed our stay at this beautiful hotel. We loved the private beach and restaurants served some tasty food! We never left the hotel to eat! ONLY thing we didn't care for is the dining gap from 3:00pm-5:30pm where you aren't able to order food from their restaurants (drinks only). It was a bummer because check in was at 3pm and we were hungry after the 2.5 hr drive and had to wait it out for the kitchens to open back up on the premises. Other than that, we were happy campers! If you have a baby stroller beware that there are steps and no ramps. The hotel room we got overlooking the ocean was super clean (bathroom especially was spotless) and we can't wait to go back!

Very nice quiet resort to spend a few days in solitude. Good food, great bar. Prices are high but it's the Hamiltons after all. Nice pool. Great marina.

Loved it there, super chill. I had a beautiful, balcony with a view of my private beach and water The electric boat ride was great and free. The people that work there are so nice.

We scored a great last minute deal and it was my first time there. WOW!! I was blown away. The resort was amazing, restaurant and bars were amazing. The private beach was excellent and the view from the room, with a balcony, was stellar!!! This Carl Fisher building is a great piece of Montauk history. Hoping to score another great deal because we can't wait to return!

We just stayed at the Montauk Yacht Club - and I am not sure what to make of it. It looks beautiful, especially compared to other places I have stayed in Montauk, but it seriously lacks service. It is more of a hotel than a resort, but at top dollar resort prices. For example two egg sandwiches we got to go in the morning cost $54. There are not many options for food, I was pretty hungry and didn't want to drive anywhere since I was on "vacation" and there was no room service. Walking by all the glamorous young people at night while I was dressed to relax was kind of a downer. And no one answers the phone, even at the front desk, so you are on your own. I saw a lot of families with young children and then also a trendy party crowd which is a really weird mix. Nice view though and my dog liked it.

Photo of Allison S.

Great time away. Dog friendly. Kid friendly - with lots of activities - paddleboarding, kayak, tennis, pickleball. Tubing can be hired right from the hotel dock. Fun for adults too - pool was a scene on the weekend - and loved the idea of "sip and stretch" as an activity! Rooms lovely (we stayed second floor garden view). Food was great. Would go back.

We just hosted our daughter's wedding at MYC last weekend and I would give it 10 stars if I could! The new owners have dramatically improved the physical rooms, hallways, common areas and staff is super friendly and attentive (even before they knew we were part of the wedding party). From the moment we arrived we never opened a door, carried a bag and were constantly being asked if we needed help or assistance. Hotel: Staff was amazing and lots of people around for assistance of any kind. Rooms & Hallways : completely renovated, clean, chic, gorgeous. Food/bar: Delicious. Great variety of healthy, late night pizzas, delicious drinks, etc. Outside Space: Lots of great places to hang (either quiet or not) - poolside, on the beach, small sitting areas with beautiful fire pits, etc etc. Activities - there is something for everyone - singles and families - from tennis and paddle boarding to bike riding, a playground, beach, etc. For the wedding - I was beyond impressed with the number of staff assigned to help us make sure the day was perfect and smooth. From the super attentive bridal suite attendant (shout out to Marie!), to the bathroom attendant (who knew?) and after party helper - we never once had to look far for help or to ask a question. Our wedding was outside in a tent and the staff served the dinner in a timely manner, the bartenders were fabulous and it was the most perfect event in every way. I would highly recommend this gorgeous resort and cannot wait to go back!

Very unhappy with our three night stay this week. Expected a great experience, but many problems! Bad restaurant, horrible staff, careless teams managing new owned facility. Avoid staying here! We arranged for a second family to join us this week, we rented two rooms with water view and experienced so many problems we will never return. Our family of four (two kids) met with a second family of five (three kids) expecting to enjoy several pools on site, confirmed amenities and beach activities. - No working WiFi the first day, their team had not idea what the problem was, the second day the WiFi was only working in our rooms only, but not on the grounds, so I was not able to work on my computer, only in the bathroom for our three day stay! - keys to our rooms did not work the entire first day. After hours of arguments with their team trying 8-12 sets of keys and the doors not working, just got angry and told them to figure it out, then find us to give us the keys for entry. - pictures at the website show kayaking at the beach, but there were no working kayaks, they all had holes and not able to float!!! Our kids were very upset with this problem and complained the whole time. The team did not care, just told us new ones are on backorder! - We were eating breakfast with kids and man cutting grass with weed-wacker did not care to avoid us, sprayed us with cut grass ruining our breakfast and hurt one of my daughters with a rock from the weed wacker! I yelled at the guy and he just walked off, did not say a word!!! - Restaurant food is very poor quality. It was high priced, so we expected it to be good, but learned our lesson the first day... For lunch and dinner we had to return multiple dishes with order mistakes and just tasting bad. We decided to drive to town for breakfast pickup from the Montauk great bakeries and had great dinners at the local restaurants. Do not be a sucker! Avoid the restaurant! - We understand the facility is now being run by a new owner, but there is too much construction going on to enjoy the facility. Lots of saws, power tools and even a chain saw cutting down old dock posts. Horrible noise, not able to enjoy our long awaited family vacation! The working team at this facility is careless, could not be bothered to help us, did not care if we were upset about our problems and did not offer a refund for any of the problems we encountered! Never going to return!!! You are warned, it may look nice, but it's a nightmare!!!

Montauk Yacht Club with a view of the lake

Time Out says

A luxury resort on Lake Montauk offering spacious rooms, elevated amenities, full-service dining and a year-round opulent vacation vibe.

Located on The Hamptons’ largest marina, Montauk Yacht Club is a full-service resort just minutes from downtown Montauk. The most expensive property sale in Hamptons history, the renovated resort opened in 2023 with 107 modern yet nautical guest rooms, plus 22 standalone villas. Showfish, the property’s signature restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Il Forno offers Neapolitan-style pizzas to enjoy by the pool. A second more quiet pool, plus an indoor pool are also onsite, as is a quiet swimming beach on Lake Montauk.

The entire waterfront property is dog- and family-friendly, with attentive service and amenities including paddleboards and kayaks, free cruises on the property’s electric yacht, and more – all with no resort fee. Outdoor sofas, dock chairs and loungers are ample across the hotel, so there are plenty of spaces to lounge, relax with a book (or smartphone, WiFi is strong), order a spritz and unwind. The crowd ranges from city and suburban weekenders to local folks who park their boats (yachts) on-site, with notorious late-night parties raging when Showfish transitions to club mode with a DJ. Don’t worry: the guest rooms are far enough away if you want a quiet, good night’s sleep, or if you just want to conveniently roll into bed at 4am.

Neighborhood

Located on Star Island on Lake Montauk, Montauk Yacht Club is at the edge of the East End hamlet, and a resort neighborhood within itself. That is, you don’t have to leave once you check in, and if you arrive by or have access to a boat, you can travel by water to local restaurants, beaches and more. Secluded from the summertime chaos of Montauk proper, but close enough to all the hubbub, Montauk Yacht Club is a getaway within a vacation town.

Ditch Plains Beach:  Montauk’s famous surf beach is a top spot to sink your toes in the sand, catch a wave or watch the pros board in the Atlantic. Grab a bite from the popular food truck Ditch Witch and enjoy the scenic oceanfront views.

Fisher’s Montauk :  Opened in summer 2023, this year-round Scandinavian restaurant melds Montauk ingredients and style with Nordic flavors in a stylish dining room and romantic backyard. Visit for grilled langoustines with herb butter, crispy cod with egg salad, natural wines and more.

Surf Lodge :  For a fun night out, head to this luxe renovated motel which boasts an on-site beach to lounge on, plus a stage for live music. A full bar, small bites, and even a vegan lobster roll are served if you’re out for a casual hang, or sit down at the indoor-outdoor restaurant for a full meal after a show.

Time Out Tip

Every day brings special complimentary activities to Montauk Yacht Club, so keep an eye on the resort agenda for free rosé and oyster happy hours, exercise classes, tasting events, boat tours and more.

MONTAUK YACHT CLUB RETURNS AS THE EPITOME OF LUXURY AND ADVENTURE IN THE HAMPTONS

montauk yacht club bar

The moment you arrive at Montauk Yacht Club’s breathtaking property, you are transported into a realm of luxury and sophistication. Perched on Star Island Road, just 10 minutes from lively downtown Montauk, the resort offers the largest marina in the Hamptons with a first-class 219-slip marina that can accommodate vessels up to 300 feet. The glamorous ambiance and intoxicatingly beautiful seaside setting creates a spectacular resort destination for summer getaways, private events, and yachting.

In July of 2022, Safe Harbor Marinas acquired Gurney’s Star Island Resort & Marina. After nine months of investment and preparation, the company announced the official reopening of the storied property this spring and began welcoming guest to the resort’s world-class waterfront hospitality.

“The history of Montauk Yacht Club is as rich as the location is stunning. Our teammates in Montauk and throughout the country have been working to prepare for this moment. It is our great honor and joy to bring the Montauk Yacht Club back to Long Island, to her many patrons, and to our tens of thousands of boating families in the region,” said Baxter Underwood, CEO of Safe Harbor Marina.

montauk yacht club bar

After hearing the great buzz about the newly opened resort, I was eager to visit and experience the property for myself. Upon arrival, my traveling companion and I were shown to our elegant room, a Water View King overlooking the Montauk Yacht Club’s private beach. Our personal deck offered expansive views of Lake Montauk and a sense of tranquility. Spread out across the 35 acre property, the resort offers a total of 107 rooms and villa suites designed as peaceful waterside retreats. The welcoming and modern space was decorated with touches of white, navy and natural wood. The expansive bathroom offered a large and inviting shower and a spacious vanity to enjoy while primping for the day’s adventures.

montauk yacht club bar

After dropping off our luggage, we were ready to explore the picturesque property. The pathway outside our room led to one of the resort’s three inviting pools located at the center of the picturesque grounds. Next to it, the lively Pool Club Bar provided one of the most sensational settings in the Hamptons to enjoy excellent cocktails while admiring views of the marina.

montauk yacht club bar

That evening, we had the pleasure of dining at Showfish, Montauk Yacht Club’s celebrated fine dining restaurant. Focused only on the freshest locally-sourced ingredients, Showfish presents a unique take on east-end dining that embraces fresh fish, farm-to-table vegetables, and unique culinary concoctions cooked to serve in a stunning seaside setting.

montauk yacht club bar

Executive Chef Matt Murphy came to Showfish from the renowned Shelter Island Ram’s Head Inn. Previously, he held sous chef positions at the Ritz Carlton, the Rainbow Room, the Russian Tea Room, and executive chef positions at the Centerport Yacht Club and the famed La Colombe D’or.

We enjoyed the Tuna Tartare and Burratina, followed by the Butter Poached Lobster and the Montauk Cod served with Japanese turnips, yuzu beurre blanc, smoked trout roe, and pine nuts. For dessert, the Chocolate Temptation made with chocolate cake and cream was excellent. While enjoying our outstanding meal, it was beautiful to watch the moon go in and out of clouds above the resort’s lighthouse.

montauk yacht club bar

After dinner, I highly recommend grabbing a drink from Showfish’s indoor bar and taking it outside where you can lounge at your own private fire pit while admiring the night sky filled with stars.

In the morning, it felt like we were in our own slice of paradise as we opened the curtains to our room and saw a swan standing on the hotel’s private beach by the edge of the still waters of Lake Montauk. The resort’s second restaurant, Il Forno serves award-winning pizza in the afternoons and evenings. For breakfast, the casual eatery is the prefect place to pick up Jack’s Coffee and delicious pastries delivered from Montauk Bake Shoppe.

montauk yacht club bar

While staying at Montauk Yacht Club, there are  countless activities to fill your stay with relaxation and adventure. From indulging in the soothing private beach, to relaxing by the poolside, playing pickleball on two courts, exploring the town with complimentary bikes, and enjoying kayaking and fitness classes. Guests are also offered a complimentary one hour cruise on one of the resort’s X Shore all-electric yachts. We absolutely loved this excursion and highly recommend speaking with the concierge about this truly memorable experience.

montauk yacht club bar

If you crave something sweet, A La Mode Ice Cream Shop serves tasty waffle cones with all nut-free flavors and vegan options. I recommend Cooks (a combination of vanilla and chocolate cookies, chocolate vanilla ice cream, and chocolate fudge) and Partly Cloudy (blue cotton candy ice cream with mini marshmallows).

Before you leave, definitely stop by the Montauk Yacht Club’s thoughtfully curated gift shop which sells fashion & accessories, as well as, stylish t-shirts, water bottles, and sweatshirts with the yacht club’s eye-catching logo.

The new Montauk Yacht Club is a resounding success. Since the property reopened its doors, Safe Harbor Montauk Yacht Club has been named a “Top Ten marina destination in North America, Mexico, and the Bahamas” by Yachting Magazine. There is no other place in the Hamptons that so beautifully marries hospitality with the world of yachting.

The Montauk Lake Club is a non-equity, privately owned, private club.

Nestled midway down the protected eastern shore of Montauk’s safe harbor, the Montauk Lake Club was built in 1929 during the Carl Fisher era as part of the Montauk Dream, a plan of creating a playground for the rich and famous. The structures, grounds, and amenities of the yacht club and marina all exude casual elegance with a family-friendly atmosphere.  Some of our many wonderful amenities include our charming clubhouse, 16-room inn, restaurant, bar & lounge, heated lake front swimming pool, deep-water marina, spa, beach access, and year-round fitness center.

We invite you to relax in a poolside chaise lounge or enjoy lunch and cocktails as you unwind to the soothing views of the sun setting across the yachts within our wonderful marina. The Montauk Lake Club’s plush grounds, spectacular views, and first class amenities beckon your next special event, meeting, or wedding.  Our facilities can accommodate up to 300 guests, with guest rooms available for your comfort and convenience.
