Powerboats compete in BP Airport Pro-Classic

BP Airport Pro-Classic Powerboats

The powerboats were off to a flying start at the BP Airport Pro-Classic at Sandy Hook on Sunday morning as they hit the water hard.

A total of 33 powerboat racers and they crew from around Queensland converged on Bundaberg for the second last race of the year.

Bundaberg Powerboat Club Kathy Eglington said the water was a little choppy to start which gave the powerboats a little lift as they flew across the normally tranquil water of Sandy Hook.

Kathy said it was a great turnout of racers and spectators who gathered on the riverbank to watch the fast-paced action.

“We have had racers from the Gold Coast to Mackay join in the pro-classic today,” Kathy said.

“There’s a good representation of locals too; I’d say about a third are from around here.”

Taking out the first senior heat at the BP Airport Pro-Classic was Craig Spicer of CPG Racing from Wamuran.

Craig is not new to racing powerboats and said his passion followed on from his father and grandfather.

“I’ve been around racing my whole life since I was a young boy;’m third generation,” he said.

“Zac Atkinson (Acko Racing) and I have a ball racing together (and) both our dad's used to race each other.”

Craig said the first two BP Airport Pro-Classic races of the day were fantastic as he gained a place but had to miss the final two races after a small piece of equipment failed.

He said he loved coming to the Bundaberg Region to race his powerboat and looked forward to returning.

Thank you to the sponsors and volunteers

Kathy thanked all the sponsors and volunteers who helped make the event possible, saying without them the BP Airport Pro-Classic would not have been successful.

“Without our sponsors we wouldn’t be able to have this,” Kathy said.

“Our major sponsor was BP Airport – without their support it would be very difficult to host event like this here in Bundaberg.”

Kathy said powerboats continued to grow in the Bundaberg Region and the event held earlier in the year during July was the largest the club had seen.

“We hold five races a year here and the Rum City Classic in July had 65 boats and was our biggest amount ever, which is truly amazing,” she said.

“The volunteers, we love our volunteers, without our safety boats or these volunteers on the ground we wouldn’t be able to host events like – not many clubs around would exist without the volunteers!

“So, we just have to say a big thank you to all of them!”

The next event for Bundaberg Powerboat Club will be held at the beginning of December and will be the final race for the year.

The Australian Power Boat Association is the recognised national sporting organisation for the sport of power boat racing in Australia, affiliated with the Union International Motonautique . The UIM is the international governing body of power boating, recognised by the  International Olympic Committee .

The Queensland State Council is responsible for administering power boat racing in Queensland and reports to the national body.  This includes affiliating clubs, sanctioning race meetings and issuing race licences throughout Queensland.  The state council consists of the member clubs and executive officers .

Primarily, power boat racing in Queensland focusses on circuit racing and offshore racing.  Circuit racing classes range from the Formula Future J1 class for drivers aged from eight years old and powered by engines up to six horsepower right up to the Unlimited Outboard, Unlimited Hydroplane and Unlimited Displacement classes.  Offshore classes start with the Supercat 400 hp class, with boats usually powered by twin 200 horsepower outboard engines through to the Supercat Extreme class with engines up to 1,500 horsepower or more.

While the glamour and excitement of the grand prix, offshore and blown alcohol displacement (BAD) boats attract the bulk of the media attention, power boat racing is one of the most affordable forms of motorsport available and there is a class and level of competition to suit almost any budget.  Race days range from low-key club racing up to championship events.   Contact us or contact a club near you to find out more about how you and your family can join in the fun!

Applications Open for the 2024 Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup

powerboat racing bundaberg

The Rose Cup is an invitational event open to sailors who have reached their 16th birthday but not their 21st birthday during the calendar year in which the event is held (i.e., must be born between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2008). The Championship features world-class coaching and serves as an outstanding training ground for young sailors who are passionate about match racing and focused on competing at the next level.

“We are very pleased to see the competitive group of applicants we have received to date and welcome additional applications for everyone interested,” said Ryan Davidson, USYMRC Committee Chair. “This years event at Corinthian Yacht Club is not one you will want to miss!”

Applications submitted by April 1 will receive preference. Request an invitation here:  https://form.jotform.com/240095124431143 . Competitors are asked to provide their top three match and fleet racing accomplishments over the past three years, and to write briefly about their experience racing on a 3-4 person keelboat.

Teams consist of crews of four, with at least one male and one female and a maximum crew weight of 660 pounds. Teams may be composed of members from different yacht clubs or sailing associations.

The Rose Cup started as an invitational youth match racing event in 2010. It was founded by members of Balboa Yacht Club in Newport Beach, California, and the Newport-Balboa Sailing & Seamanship Association. Its mission is to assist in the promotion of youth match racing in the United States and improve the quality of US competitors in national and international competition.

Thanks primarily to the efforts of US Sailing Match Racing Committee Vice-Chair and five-time US Match Racing Champion, Dave Perry, US Sailing made the event one of its three match racing championships, and it officially became the U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship in 2015.
