Fort Lauderdale projected development

How Fort Lauderdale is entering a new era in its yachting history

With massive waterfront projects, Fort Lauderdale is entering a new era in its yachting history, says Christiana Lilly...

The booming yachting industry of Fort Lauderdale began with a humble gas station back in 1957. It’s a shortcut, true, but hear us out.

While Bahia Mar started welcoming yachts to its marina in 1950, the Phillips 66 gas station, a mere half-mile from the ocean near the inlet, was an important refuelling point that connected the popular cruising grounds farther north to the idyllic Bahamas. And you know the story from there – Fort Lauderdale became the destination, thanks in part to the rise of a resort known as Pier Sixty-Six with a 100-slip marina in the 1960s.

The resort’s 1965 landmark tower, with its revolving cocktail lounge, was the tallest building in Broward County at the time and enticed celebrities, public figures (at one time it had a Liza Minnelli suite) and yacht owners to what the property dubs its "social harbour."

But while yachts consistently came calling over the years, some say for their owners, the city had lost its lustre. In South Florida alone, the powerful poles of Miami and West Palm Beach attracted global guests with their mix of legacy hotels, shiny new luxury branded resorts and waterfront estates, and Fort Lauderdale was falling behind.

To play catch-up, the city is doubling down on its maritime offerings. Pier Sixty-Six is undergoing a massive transformation, Bahia Mar is getting a $1 billion makeover, a multifaceted expansion is in the works for the waterfront Broward County Convention Center, and developers are incorporating yachting amenities into their blueprints. Names like Tate and Tavistock will join names like Denison , Strauss, Roscioli , and Derecktor to shape Fort Lauderdale’s boating future.

At the Pier

One obvious sign of renewal is the project at Pier Sixty-Six rising near Port Everglades. Strolling through its sales centre off SE 17th Street, interested buyers can view a model sixth-floor living room overlooking the marina or admire a model of what its developer, the Orlando-based Tavistock Group, has in store for the 32-acre icon. The company purchased the historic property in 2016 from the Blackstone Group, then another 10 acres to the south in 2018.

A 2024 opening date is slated for 325 hotel rooms, 12 dining and lounge destinations, three swimming pools and 92 luxury condos and residences. And for boaters, the marina boasts 164 slips. Here, a village of restaurants and bars will be walkable for pedestrians to admire the fleet of boats. To the north, the marina can accommodate yachts up to 98 metres; to the south, boats up to 122 metres can find a slip, thanks to a water depth of 9.1 metres from the ocean right up to the dock and no bridge height restrictions.

"This is the busiest cross section on the water," marina director Megan Lagasse says. "We’re essentially a hotel on the water for boats."

It’s projects like these that not only put eyes on Fort Lauderdale but also can boost its economic power. From 2021 to 2024, Tavistock estimates the project will have created 5,100 jobs and a one-time economic impact of $924 million. Once they’re open for business, they plan to add another 2,000 jobs and generate an annual economic impact of $208 million.

What’s not in the plans, though, is erasing the legacy and history of Pier Sixty-Six. The shell of the hotel will remain, and engineers are working to get the iconic rotating restaurant with its 66-pointed crown moving once again. Once the doors are open, they’re vying for historic designation.

The reinvented Pier Sixty-Six has attracted a lot of interest. Sales director Amy Ballon has received countless calls from people motivated by nostalgia – they got married or honeymooned there. Her son’s bar mitzvah photos were taken here. Lagasse remembers drinking piña coladas by the outdoor pool with her grandparents.

"The history of Pier Sixty-Six is so deep and rich within the local community," Ballon says. "Our big buyers have been coming locally and [are familiar] with the property and the historic nostalgia… There are a lot of memories that are connected here."

Kitty McGowan, president of the US Superyacht t of the US Superyacht Association, learned to waterski at Marina Bay, hung out at the sandbar by the Fort Lauderdale Yacht  Club, and eventually joined the yachting world professionally. For eight years she worked aboard the likes of Octopussy , Thunderball , Moonraker , and Ray Catena’s first Mercedes , which all at one time called Fort Lauderdale home. "This town is my blood, and the water and boating are a huge part of it," she says.

From these heydays, Lagasse says that Fort Lauderdale fell behind when it came to entertainment and accommodations for superyacht owners – she heard it from some of them directly.

Projects like Pier Sixty-Six aim to put the focus back on owners. The revamped resort and marina will be more than a place to park. "We are going to be able to provide a top-of-the-line, all-inclusive experience with entertainment, food and beverage facilities that don’t exist [anywhere] and I would even say in the world."

$1 billion for Bahia Mar

Another major piece in Fort Lauderdale’s historic yachting landscape is Bahia Mar, home of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show . The recent approval of that project – a $1 billion overhaul – has Fort Lauderdale buzzing.

After lots and lots of commission meetings and negotiations, developers Jimmy Tate, Kenny Tate and Sergio Rok got the OK from the city in April to move forward with their plan as well as scoring a new 100-year lease on the city-owned property. The group plans to build four condo towers with 350 units, a 19-story hotel, marina village with restaurants and bars, a park and a waterfront restaurant.

"Nine years of community outreach, three architects with three entirely different architectural experiences coupled with our steadfast effort to continue working with the city, the boat show parties and the community at large – it was fulfilling and truly something magical," Jimmy Tate says of the commission’s approval.

While Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Conrad and other high-end hoteliers are moving in on the beach, Tate talks about introducing the first five-star, luxury branded destination resort hotel to Fort Lauderdale on the historic site.

Bahia Mar’s history goes back even further than Pier Sixty-Six. Its first iteration was as a US Army fort in 1839, then a US Coast Guard base in 1926, and then a marina was built in 1949 before the property fell into disrepair and was taken over by the city of Fort Lauderdale. Thanks to a naming contest hosted by the city, it was dubbed Bahia Mar. By the early 1980s, it became a permanent home for the Fort Lauderdale boat show, which started in 1959.

Tate Capital’s latest plan is a sleeker variation of an earlier proposal that included 13 buildings, twice the commercial space and 651 rental apartments – a plan Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis called "overdeveloped." Tate says that the company’s vision is to cater to long-term residents rather than transients and keep the boat show top of mind, with waterfront parks and a pedestrian-friendly walking area, plus a marina village with food and beverage venues.

Of course, with any large project there can be apprehension. But Tate says that with nearly 100 years of family history in South Florida – five generations of the Tates live here, and it’s four generations for the Roks – they feel a huge responsibility to do right by Bahia Mar.

"Redeveloping this jewel of an asset into a world-class, five-star luxury branded destination resort hotel will be the zenith of all developments for both of our families," Tate says. "We are finally experiencing the renaissance that our neighbours to the south and north have already experienced."

The shortage of slips

But with growing boat lengths and the growing number of boats (more than 45,000 personal vessels were registered in Broward County in 2022, and that’s not counting the large transient fleet of superyachts), there can never be enough marina space. Investors have snapped up and revamped existing marine properties for the last five years, particularly. Institutions like Bradford Marine got new owners in 2019 while rapidly growing brands like OneWater Marine and Safe Harbor have put their names on Roscioli and Lauderdale Marine Center.

One of the key newcomers to town is Austin Schell. The Port 32 Marinas CEO, whose business is based in Charleston, South Carolina, had his eyes set on Fort Lauderdale in his plan to expand his network of marinas. In June, on the official grand opening day for Port 32 Fort Lauderdale, the wet basin across I-95 from Lauderdale Marine Center had been full for months and a dry stack was already 20 per cent claimed.

"That’s just a sign that the demand for boating has outstripped the physical supply of boat slips in many areas of the county, and certainly in Fort Lauderdale," Schell says. "It’s one of the global hubs for the marine industry."

With wet slips that can accommodate superyachts up to 54.9 metres, the new marina also boasts a 150-ton Travelift and 128,00 square feet of commercial space with tenants specialising in yacht service and repairs. Port 32 also includes amenities for the crew, including a gym, a lounge, laundry and conference rooms for staff to utilise between trips.

"When you’re on a yacht for long stretches of time, having access to a brand-new gym to work out on is something that crew members value,” Schell says. “[The marina] was built with the superyacht crew in mind."

But with slips harder to come by than a liquor license, the search for docks has spilled over into the real estate world. Interior designer and entrepreneur Katia Bates , who is steeped in the yachting world, has heard customers asking for the "trophy points" of local real estate: waterfront properties that can accommodate large vessels, or even homes that include a separate structure for charter and medical staff.

"Marinas have become a bit scarce in Fort Lauderdale… people still have yachts they need to accommodate," she says. "All of these properties are super highly desirable for a person that has a large yacht because they normally can accommodate superyachts, or maybe two of them," says Bates, who, with husband Tom, owns a waterfront home in Fort Lauderdale.

It certainly was the case for Hal and Joan Griffith. They own a home on Sunrise Key and they split their time between the US West and East Coasts. In addition to a deepwater dock, the home has a guest house with a workout room, storage and other facilities for their yacht crew to utilise. They first made their way here when they bought the first of two boats from Hargrave Custom Yachts and made frequent trips to the East Coast to oversee the design and outfitting. While they were in Fort Lauderdale, they would stay at Pier Sixty-Six and enjoy the dining options.

Then, they decided to buy a home where they could dock the 44.2-metre Christensen superyacht that they bought after their Hargraves . The location was ideal: only one bridge comes between them and the open ocean. Aptly named I Love This Boat , the tri-deck still features the original owner’s gold-plate railings and crystal glass accents but was updated and fitted with a whole suite of water toys, for friends and family or charter guests.

"Fantastic" is how Hall Griffith describes Fort Lauderdale’s yachting accommodations. "I would say Fort Lauderdale is a special spot for anybody that owns a boat because of all the flexibility in the services, all you need for maintenance and upkeep is here, and when you have a problem, it’s easy to get service."

Fort Lauderdale has its own Millionaire’s Row – but Bates says it should probably be renamed Billionaire’s Row with the way neighbourhoods like Las Olas Isles are shaping up. Aware of this breed of buyers’ needs, the real estate industry in Fort Lauderdale has adapted. Bates says that almost all open houses hosted by her real estate broker have been in partnership with a yacht brokerage company. "It has opened the business and the market to a lot of different opportunities," she says.

Clients have called on Bates’s interior design skills to carry the aesthetic of their home onto their waterfront abode, particularly when they are planning on spending extended periods on board. That fifth cabin might need to be converted to a gym or an office, for example.

"The yacht becomes your social life, in a sense," says Bates, who worked on the interior of Tanzanite , a yacht that belongs to Fort Lauderdale residents Andrew and Tanya Heller.

Andrew Heller, the owner of equity firm Heller Capital, was introduced to the boating life by a business partner. He attended the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show every year for two decades and bought a 11.3-metre Intrepid cuddy cabin to enjoy with his children during their visits to South Florida. He traded that for a Boston Whaler Outrage, and when he was ready for an upgrade, he took quite the leap, acquiring a 44.2-metre, four-deck, five-cabin Westship that he dubbed Tanzanite for Tanya’s favourite gem — and the same blue-and-violet stone set in her engagement ring.

"We love the weather, being on the water – our house has extraordinary views. We have one of the most well-known houses in Fort Lauderdale. All the tour boats talk about our house and boat," he says.

Aboard Tanzanite , the couple hosts dinner cruises as well as plans regular trips to the Bahamas and Key West, towing along their centre console. As they are heavily involved in the charity world, they host fundraisers for the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, NSU Art Museum, the Jack and Jill Center and their animal rescue charity, Purrr.

"Boating has been nothing but an upward trend for 20 years,” says Heller who is a fan of Fort Lauderdale. “There’s just endless entertainment to cruise the Intracoastal and the New River and the canals and see real estate development and just the relaxing scenic beauty of the area."

As opening day for Pier Sixty-Six draws closer, Lagasse says, "a lot of money is being invested into Fort Lauderdale to bring us back to that [golden] era." The next few years will be a turning point. "I think we’re on the peak of a really interesting transitional time where it could go anywhere," McGowan says.

With exciting projects on the horizon and more than one readily accessible fuel dock (and power stations), yachting remains and likely always will be embedded into the DNA of the Venice of America.

Fort Lauderdale International Boat ShowIn

The world’s largest in-water boating extravaganza, this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show—that’s FLIBS for short—opens its doors Wednesday, October 25 for a five-day run. It will have seven venues with more than 1,300 boats on display. The total number of boats, marine products and services represent more than 1,000 brands from 52 countries.

Last year, more than 100,000 people visited the show, with about half coming from outside Florida. Many yacht aficionados consider it the most enjoyable show on the international boat-show circuit, because of the sheer range of vessel types and owners—from twenty-something-foot fishing boats in the convention center to the massive 200-plus-foot superyachts at the Bahia Mar. The numbers of new yachts from Europe, Asia and South America also grow each year. Unlike other shows, there is a vessel for every boater profile at FLIBS.

Changes to this year’s show include an expanded Superyacht Village with more superyachts than ever, plus the addition of a new Designers’ Pavilion featuring many of the world’s top yacht design studios.

Looking for a new supercar to go with your superyacht? The new “Car Exhibition at the Hall of Fame Marina” showcases the latest in exotic machinery.

Of course, the show is fundamentally about what floats your boat. Here are 11 showstoppers you shouldn’t miss.

Launched in 2004 as Avanti , and then renamed Phoenix , the yacht was christened Marguerite after an ownership change in 2021. Designed by U.K.-based Andrew Winch, one of the yacht’s many highlights includes a self-contained, two-story owner’s apartment on the main and upper decks, complete with an observation lounge, a private outdoor retreat on the foredeck, and a floating staircase to a private office. Capable of carrying a Bell Jet Ranger on the foredeck, the helicopter deck also doubles as a party place with sun lounges and a 10-person hot tub. Marguerite is listed with Moran Yacht & Ship for $48 million.

Viareggio Superyachts ‘Atomic’

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

Launched in 2020, the 209-foot Atomic includes one of the best onboard dive centers of any superyacht to accommodate owner Dan Huish’s passion for scuba. With a fold-down, sea-level terrace and specialized storage for dozens wet suits and dive tanks, the yacht was also designed to explore the world’s most remote dive spots. A state-of-the-art dynamic positioning system can keep Atomic in one place without having to drop anchor hook possibly damage the seabed. Designed by Espen Øino International and built in Italy by Viareggio Superyachts, this steel-and-aluminum superyacht was designed to travel the world. The boat has a 5,300-nautical-mile range at 12 knots, but the twin 2,680 hp Caterpillar diesels deliver a 17-knot top speed. Atomic is listed with IYC for $63 million.

Icon ‘Party Girl’

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

This sleek 205-foot superyacht from the Dutch builder Icon is all about having fun. As a successful charter yacht—it rents for up to $490,000 a week—the vessel (and its 12 guests) has a small armada of water toys at their disposal, including a trio of Yamaha WaveRunners, seabobs, a wakeboard, a kayak, and an oversized water slide, plus no fewer than four tenders. Reportedly owned by Pet Supermarkets founder Charles West, Party Girl also has the legs to party at the end of the world, courtesy of its 6,000 nautical-mile range. Launched in 2013 as Meridian and heavily updated in 2019, superyacht has distinctive lines from the drawing board of the U.K. studio RWD, with interior design by Cristiano Gatto. One of the many highlights includes a salon that stretches over 55 feet and includes a formal dining area with seating for 14. Party Girl is listed with Merle Wood & Associates for $52.5 million.

Tankoa ‘Casino Royale’

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

Likely to be the biggest superyacht at FLIBS, the headlining 236-foot Casino Royale is making an appearance in Fort Lauderdale to showcase the workmanship of its Italian builder, Tankoa Yachts. Launched as Solo in 2018, reportedly for billionaire Italian media mogul Carlo de Benedetti, the yacht defines Italian style and opulence. One of its most spectacular features is its full-deck owner’s apartment, with doors leading out on to a helipad allowing the owner to step straight out of the helicopter and into his suite. That, and a dining room with a huge aquarium engineered not to ripple the water even while the yacht is under way. After an extensive refit in 2021/22 that included a switch from stark white paint to a rich copper color, Solo was put on the market and sold in May this year when the name was changed to Casino Royale . The last asking price was €66 million ($68 million).

Azimut Magellano 60

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

Fresh from its global debut at the September Cannes boat show, Azimut’s lovely, fast trawler-esque Magellano 60 will make the trip to FLIBS for its US premiere. From the drawing board of designer Ken Freivokh, who also penned the 60’s larger sisterships, it features the same trademark teak strakes on the cockpit sides, the same vertical bow, and versatile foredeck for sunning and socializing. Power from twin 730 hp MAN diesels with shaft drives deliver a 24-knot top speed with relaxed cruising at 18. Below-decks are three spacious cabins, with the full-beam master located amidships. In addition to the Magellano 60, Azimut is also doing the U.S. launch of its new outboard-powered Verve 48 with triple Mercury V12 600s at FLIBS, along with the updated Grand 36M and S7 models. The Magellano 60 is priced around $2.8 million.

Baglietto ‘Blue Ice’

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

Paint big numbers on the hull and this Italian stallion from famed builder Baglietto could easily be mistaken for some stealthy navy patrol vessel— especially with that head-turning, forward-position wheelhouse. Even the top deck funnel has the menacing look of an anti-aircraft gun installation. The black hull and battleship-gray superstructure only add to the yacht’s don’t-mess-with-me appearance. And like any good gunboat, the vessel is fast. Twin 2,200 hp MTU engines, coupled with a skinny five-foot draft and lightweight aluminum construction, provide an impressive 28-knot top speed. Delivered in 1999 and extensively re-fitted in 2016, the minimalist Aldo Cichero interior offers accommodations for up to 10 in four staterooms. Blue Ice has a $4.29 million asking price with FGI Yachts.

Gulf Craft Majesty 111

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

Talk about a world traveler. Emirates-based Gulf Craft debuted its brand-new Majesty 111 superyacht at the Dubai boat show last April. Then it was off to the Monaco Yacht Show last month, where it picked up a “Best Interior Design” award. Now it’s making its U.S. appearance at FLIBS. Designed in collaboration with Dutch studio Phathom, the 110-footer is filled with floor-to-ceiling glass in its expansive salon. It also has five cabins below-decks, plus a spacious main-deck master suite with a skylight that looks up into the foredeck plunge pool. The yacht is also surprisingly quick, with a pair of MAN V-12 diesels that deliver a top speed of 20 knots. With a draft of five and a half feet, the vessel is ideal for the often-shallow waters of the Bahamas. The price is around $12 million.

Cigarette Racing 52 Thunder

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

If there’s the rumble of thunder around the FLIBS docks this year, it won’t necessarily be South Florida weather. It’ll come from the latest speed demon from Miami’s Cigarette Racing and its jaw-dropping new 52 Thunder Center Console. Slotting into the Cigarette lineup between the 42-foot Auroris and 59-foot Tirranna , this new Thunder lives up to it name courtesy of its six, Mercury Racing 500R V-8 outboards. That adds up to a staggering 3,000 hp. Top speed? That would be in excess of 80 knots. Styled in collaboration with Italian designer Giorgio Cassetta, the Thunder combines speed with comfort, thanks to its multitude of flashy, red-trimmed leather-upholstered seating and spacious air-conditioned cabin. The 52’s 14-foot beam ensures plenty of walkaround space, with the rear cockpit making a great access point to the water, or an under-the-stars dance floor. Base price is $3.1 million.

Aquila 47 Molokai

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

Florida-based Aquila is debuting its new 47 Molokai , aiming at the big-game offshore fishing market. The big brother to the Molokai 28, this battlewagon features double-stepped hulls and a raised tunnel between the twin hulls that combine to minimize pounding in big seas. With a 14-foot, seven-inch beam, the yacht offers exceptional space and a rock-solid platform for offshore trolling. When the family is along for the ride, the accommodations include foredeck lounges and a stylish, air-conditioned stateroom below with an island queen bed, with separate head and shower. Outboard choices range from twin 600 hp Mercury V-12s, or a quartet of new 400 hp Mercury V-10s, each giving a 50-knot-plus top speed. At a friendly cruise speed, the 1,048-gallon tanks should give a range of up to 800 nautical miles. Pricing to be announced at the show.

Princess Y95

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

Talk about prolific. Britain’s Princess Yachts has debuted brand-new models at recent European boat shows—the all-new S72 was one of the stars of last month’s Southampton show, while the new Y80 was a show-stopper at Cannes. Neither will be making a grand entrance at this year’s FLIBS, with the builder choosing instead to give the first U.S. airings to its Y95 and X80 mini superyachts. The Y95 is the headliner here, with its combination of luxury and performance. Powered by a pair of 2,000 hp MAN V-12s, this 95-footer can hit a top speed of 24 knots. The Y95 looks sleek and stylish with its near bow-to-stern hull windows and the hardtop that looks like it’s floating atop the yacht. Pricing starts at around $16 million.

Riviera 585 SUV

virgin yachts fort lauderdale

The 585 SUV is the latest addition to Riviera’s five-model SUV line-up. Strong points include its roomy and protected aft cockpit, its foredeck lounge area and three-stateroom layout (including a full-width owner’s suite.) It’s also a yacht full of innovative design touches and an impressive level of craftsmanship. Standard power is a pair of 900 hp Volvo D13 diesels mated to IPS drives, with the option of 1,000 hp versions. Top speed with the bigger engines is 35 knots, with a 400-nautical-mile range at 21 knots. Pricing is about $3.6 million.

Yachts For Sale In Fort Lauderdale

With 300 miles of waterways and host of the largest in-water boat show in the world (FLIBS), this is no exaggeration. Fort Lauderdale, the primary city in Broward County, is truly among the best places for recreational boating, cruising and fishing. Fort Lauderdale has always been a top tourist destination, whether by land or by waterway. The Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway is lined on both sides with beautiful mansions, marinas and restaurants; ideal for sight-seeing and enjoying life on the water. Cruisers are advised to check fixed bridge and draw bridge heights, and opening schedules. Be sure to check for local shoaling, especially near inlets. The sandbars are a popular spot for recreational boaters, especially families, to anchor, raft-up with friends and enjoy a day on the water. These sandbar shoal areas can get very crowded on the weekends!

United Yacht Sales can help you find the perfect yacht for sale in Florida . Give us a call today at 1-772-463-3131 about purchasing a new boat or listing your current yacht on the brokerage market.

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) is scheduled each year at the end of October. Fort Lauderdale is also known for the spectacular Winterfest Boat Parade in December, when both sides of the Intercoastal (AICW) are lined with multiple thousands of spectators, kicking off the Holiday Season revelries. Water taxis, that stop at major locations on their routes and run on a schedule, are a convenient way to get around on the water and avoid driving, parking in the busy downtown and beach areas.

The Fort Lauderdale area features many excellent marinas, with some facilities that can accommodate vessels of superyacht size! Some well-known marinas are Bahia Mar Marina (site of FLIBS), Pier 66 Marina (FLIBS), Fort Lauderdale City Marina on Las Olas (also leases slips), Sails Marina, Dania Beach Marina (can accommodate liveaboards), Lighthouse Point Marina (Lighthouse Pt.), Sands Harbor Resort & Marina (Pompano Beach) and many more. Marinas that can accommodate liveaboards are Las Olas Marina, Marina Bay Marina, Hall of Fame Marina (site of FLIBS), Royale Palm Yacht Basin (vessels up to 80’) and Coral Ridge Yacht Club. For kid and pet-friendly marinas, check Pier Sixty-Six Hotel & Marina, Yacht Haven Park & Marina and the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina. Check with dockwa.com for bookable marinas in the Fort Lauderdale area and further information on special features and amenities.

A number of marinas feature excellent restaurants on site or nearby. Coconuts, located at the Hall of Fame Marina, is highly recommended and features American food and its bar. Pier Sixty-Six Marina’s Grille 66 & Bar is an upscale steakhouse and seafood restaurant. The marina’s Pelican Landing, which features international fare, is more casual. Another waterfront restaurant recommended by a United Yacht Sales broker, is Bimini Boatyard on 17th Street. Other waterfront restaurants with docks or located nearby, are Boatyard, 15th Street Fisheries (good for kids, lunch), Southport Raw Bar & Restaurant, Blue Moon Fish Company, Rendezvous, Lauderdale Marina, Rustic Inn Crabhouse (west of FTL airport), Boathouse at the Riverside (Las Olas), Flip Flops Dockside Eatery (traditional American) and the Nauti Dawg Marina Café located in the “cute” Lighthouse Point marina. For a casual waterside place to tie-up and have lunch, The Patio Bar & Grill at Sands Harbor Resort & Marina (Pompano Beach, AICW) is a great place to watch the boat traffic go by or wait for the Atlantic Blvd. Draw Bridge to open up, and it is only a 7-minute walk from Sands Harbor to Pompano Beach on the Atlantic Ocean.

Downtown Fort Lauderdale and the New River/Las Olas area features the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District with restaurants and bars, museums, entertainment, shopping and, of course, the paved walkway along the New River and green spaces. Nearby Hollywood, FL is the locale of the Hard Rock Live, the Savor Cinema (indie movies), and the downtown Hollywood Mural Project featuring murals by internationally recognized artists. Fort Lauderdale and area welcomes the boating community and has much to offer—a “boater’s paradise”!

Highly recommend this organization… they were even able to accommodate a last minute itinerary change due to tropical storm “Beryl”!

From the planning stage to last day of our trip, we could not have asked for any better experience. Alexia and crew were wonderful to deal with.

"Another Amazing Week With VCY"

Amazing customer service. Highly recommend VCY ahead of the other two big companies on the island with very little customer service.

Fort Lauderdale Yacht Charters

The yachting capital of the usa: fort lauderdale.

Why are Fort Lauderdale yacht charters so popular? Fort Lauderdale is known as the hub of the yachting industry in the US, but it is so much more than sleek, modern marinas. The area has an impressive 23 miles of golden, sandy beaches, boating canals to explore, impressive architecture and neighborhoods, and a vibrant arts and culture scene. With over 300 days of sunshine each year and comfortable temperatures year-round, this Atlantic Ocean playground is popular with divers and other water sports aficionados. It’s also home to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious yachting events in the world.

The Greater Fort Lauderdale area is the only place in the continental USA where you can snorkel or dive on a living coral reef straight from the beach. In both Lauderdale-By-The-Sea and Hollywood, the reef is an easy, 100-yard swim from the shore. Book your Fort Lauderdale yacht charter today and explore the Yachting Capital of the USA.

Greater Fort Lauderdale Area Highlights

  • 23 miles of golden sand beaches along the Atlantic shoreline
  • The Intracoastal Waterway and boating canals
  • Natural attractions and parks, including the Gateway to the Everglades and Hillsboro Beach

  • Rich marine life, including sea turtles who nest on the beaches from March to October

Fort Lauderdale Yacht Charters – What to See & Do

Fort Lauderdale skyline over Barrier Island

Pompano Beach

Known as the Shipwreck Capital of Florida, Pompano Beach is a favorite among diving enthusiasts. It’s also famous for its sport fishing, with anglers looking to land that perfect kingfish or barracuda. Located where the Gulf Stream bends, the clear, warm waters are the perfect playground for watersports including surfing, kayaking and paddleboarding, or for the adrenaline-seekers, kitesurfing, and jet skiing. For a day of leisure, there’s a family-friendly beach with lifeguards, a kid’s playground, interactive water features, and volleyball courts.

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea

Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is a quaint village located on a barrier island that’s seven feet above sea level. Featuring mid-century modern architecture and charming, Old Florida-style charm, you’ll want to spend a day here. It is Florida’s Beach Diving capital, with the first of a three-tiered natural coral reef system just 100 yards from the beach. Snorkelers and scuba divers flock to the reef and to the nearby shipwreck snorkel trail that includes the SS Copenhagen, a British cargo steamer that struck the reef and sank in 1900. Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is also home to Anglins Fishing Pier, which extends more than 900 feet over the Atlantic Ocean.

Shipwreck Park

Shipwreck Park in Pompano Beach is an underwater park system with artificial reefs and public art. One of the artificial reefs is the Lady Luck, formerly a cargo ship that operated in New York City. It now includes an art installation that looks like a casino, complete with octopus blackjack dealers and card sharks. Explore the marine life in and around the artificial reef, and even stop for a quick photo at one of the casino tables.

Hillsboro Beach

Hillsboro Beach, located on a peninsula between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic, is famous for its historic lighthouse that was once a beacon for sailors in the area. It’s an idyllic beach where you can enjoy a swim or an afternoon of beach games before taking a nap underneath the blue skies. Between March and October, keep an eye out for leatherback, loggerhead, and green sea turtle nests along the beach as well as tiny prints as the hatchlings head into the ocean.
