"The stability of the hull underway was due in part to the low profile design of this pilothouse style cruiser and the hull design by Carver engineers... This elegant and well-designed cruising yacht offers comfort and style without giving up luxury. "

–BoatTest.com

"Surprisingly, for a boat of this size, all-round visibility from the pilothouse is excellent, even looking aft through the main saloon, thanks to the clever layout of the windows. There’s no black spots on this boat, which gives the skipper control of the vessel at all times."

–yachtandboat.com

"Long before we started the big Volvo Pentas, the Carver 570 Voyager impressed me with her thoughtful arrangement plan, standard equipment, materials and workmanship. The company's goal is to build comfortable, luxurious cruising yachts at a reasonable price, and this boat fits the profile nicely."

–Yachting Magazine

"Throughout a variety of maneuvers, including hard turns and offshore speed runs, the 570 gave us a stable, solid ride. It handled responsively, and had a tight turning radius for its size."

–Boating World Magazine

why did carver yachts go out of business

Carver has been building motor yachts longer than many of today’s yacht brokers have been out of grade school. Beginning with a succession of popular aft cabin models in the 1980s, by the early 2000s the Carver fleet had grown to include several cruising yachts in the 50-foot range. These were good years for the yachting industry and Carver rode a wave of sales success with several midsize motor yachts and cruisers. Among them were four notable models over 50 feet in length that became market leaders in their category. Profiled below, Carver sold so many of these yachts that they are now easily found on every big-boat brokerage market in the country.

It all came to a halt with the Great Recession in 2007, but even though parent company Genmar went bankrupt in 2009 Carver never stopped building boats. The company was restructured, new owners took over and today Carver has resumed its place as one of America’s truly iconic builders.

"Carver pays meticulous attention to the craftmanship and technology of its yachts. .. If your taste runs toward a big comfortable cruising yacht with the kind of style that satisfies both the mind and eye, Carver’s 530 Voyager Pilothouse just might be your starship."

–Boattest.com

"The essence of the change at Carver is most evident in the Voyager's pilothouse where the skipper sits in solitary splendor. Among the more pleasant aspects of the boat was the conversation-level silent running and the livability below while underway."

The vast interior spaces of the Carver 506 are perfect for entertaining family and friends.

"...the 506 is an impressive design with an appealing modern approach to styling. Her 51-foot, 7-inch LOA and 15-foot, 4-inch beam are common for a yacht of her type, but within those dimensions Carver delivers a layout one might find on a 60-footer."

"Carver makes great use of the 15'4" beam in the 506 by pushing out the salon nearly to the hullsides. But how can that be? What happened to the sidedecks? They're still there, but they have been raised well above the hull's sheerline."

"The 506 is an aft-cabin motoryacht that combines the aft deck and pilothouse into a single, wide-open space under a hardtop. This design, combined with accommodations for six, makes her ideal for long-range cruising in any weather."

We have just recently sold our sea ray and are looking to purchase between 35 to 40 foot MY. We have been looking at carvers as we like the layout. We have recently heard some discouraging news regarding the older ones. Any comments or suggestions would be most helpful.\tks tim

I don't know specifics, someone here will, but the Carvers I've been on didn't seem very well built. I think Sea Ray is generally a better built boat. I did have a marine surveyor once, after ragging on Carvers, tell me Silvertons were surprisingly well built boats.

My family and I had a 1987 34 Silverton Convertible for 17 years. Based in Long Island, NY, we cruised all over the south shore, around Manhattan, tons of offshore ocean fishing, even up the Hudson to Albany. Nice, solid hull, all glass at least below the waterline. Drilled a hole in the bottom for a transducer and the plug had no wood or coring. Had it in 6+ footers a few times. It's not always the build of the boat that makes an experience good or bad but the experience and knowledge behind the wheel. Anyway, sleeps 4 comfy, 6 is possible, you'll have more options with kids (i.e. took the dinette table down and had my infant son sleep on the dinette floor on blankets, worked well. 40-fotters around the late 1980's had same type of layout but much more room, which may suite you.

Not sure what you mean by 'older' ...some people think a 2002 model is old. With an older boat, and I'll assume you mean at least 10 years old, I don't get too hung up on model year or brand. If it's 10 years old or 15 years old what matters to me is the care the boat has received and the condition that it's in. When I buy an older boat I look at it like I'm paying the seller for care and upkeep during the period of time he's owned it. I value a knowledgeable owner/seller as much or more than a particular brand.

Older Carver's Last summer we purchased a '85 Carver Riviera. 28' with twin crusaders. Very well maintained. We are the 3rd owner, first had it for 17 years and loved the boat dearly. The 2nd owner just kept it at the marina and didn't use it. After a thorough survey, weeks of cleaning - we are very proud of her. Solid boat for a 28 footer.

By older we mean something late '80s. Specifically we had been looking at 3607's or 3807's. And in the mid '90's, perhaps the 355. We'd always thought Carvers to be solid, well made boats....there are certainly a number of them around here, and are popular, but after doing a little research, have heard a number of sources tell us that they are not as solid as they appear. mbgator: contrats on your Riviera! Just a few years ago that was our "dream boat". But at the time, they were out of our range and now we'd like something a little different. Nice boat though!

I have a 2001 Carver 374 Voyager. I am the second owner and picked it up after realizing what a decent boat they really are. I have done a lot of research on the Carvers, Silvertons, Meridian (Bayliner), Maxums, etc. The older Carvers, generally older than the early 90's, weren't constructed as well. They had foam and coring below the waterline and lots of wood in their stringers. As the manufacturing process progressed, they had to come into compliance with stricter guidelines for the NMMA certifications. My vessel has no coring (fiberglass only) below the waterline. TONS of sealent between fittings and with all fasteners, very nice fit & finish to all fiberglass parts--no giant gaps to fill in with caulking. The interiors are some the best in their mid-range cruiser class. Just make sure that the boat has been preperly cared for and all maintenance completed as scheduled. Good luck on whatever purchase you make.

We work on a lot of them here. Quality is between Silverton and Sea Ray. The biggest problem we see is that they had layup issues that lead to massive blisters. Big, deep ones. I have seen some that almost go all the way though the hull on Carvers.. The Santego's are actually great boats but don't sell very well. The old 4207 was a great boat with 3208 cats. Some of the other models are just plain goofy. We call the Mariner "the orthopedic shoe" After 2001 they all sort of look like plastic bubbles like Meridian, Silverton, etc.

carver boats Thanks everyone for your help. I hope a good surveyer can locate the concerns that may arise in the boat we choose.
Regarding your surveyor: 1) They hate it, but watch everything the surveyor does. I had the survey done on my boat and they provided everything including compression tests on the engine. They indicated each cylinder pressure, took oil samples for the engines and genset, pulled the boat and checked the hull, out drives, shafts, seals, etc. However, I discovered that they forged the cylinder pressures because there was a broken plug that they missed plus one that was seized in the cylinder head. That was because the big fat surveyor couldn't get his bug butt on the outboard side of the engines. 2) Get a reputable company. There are fly-by-night compaines that won't certify their results. Get someone that's beenin business for a while. 3) By sticking with the surveyor and asking questions, you're likely to learn somehing about the vessel and what to look for on your own. I learned a lot about what to look for on the hull and shafts when I pull the boat for zincs and visable inspection.

Joe Thanks for reaching-out. We loved our Riveria and occasionally discuss how much we enjoyed the boat. When first purchased, the survey returned a single page of recommended items, all cleared-up within a weekend. Very little was noted, and nothing structural. Very solid boat, easy to handle and a breeze to dock. While not as fast as a 30 Sundancer, she was easily as stable and had twice as much 'livable' room aboard. Fuel consumption is relative, but I ran her at 17 - 18 knots and averaged about 20 gph at that speed on Lake Michigan. I could keep her on plane at as little as 15 knots before she fell-off. One downside to note - she's not a 'dry boat', the bow doesn't have enough flare to keep all the spray off the windshield, but that wasn't a problem. Does the boat you are looking-at have A/C, is it gas or diesel, genset installed? Keep us posted.

We are also looking at a 1986 Riviera and would appreciate any comments about the boat. It has been completely restored inside with all new cushions etc. It seems to have been very well maintained. I 've read a lot of negative reviews about Carver boats, especially the older ones. We don't plan on any long trips, just want to explore the SW Florida coastline. I'm wondering if it may be a good little boat for us, as its very roomy below. The price is $30,000, so for the money, we can't expect too much. The engine has been refurbished and has 700 hours. Any thoughts on this boat?

Marquis Yachts Responds to Rumors of a Shut-Down

why did carver yachts go out of business

Rob Parmentier, President and CEO of Marquis Yachts, released a press release to Marquis and Carver Yachts dealers addressing rumors of the company shutting down if not sold to a new owner by March 1, 2020. He assured dealers that Marquis does not expect a disruption in the continued production of yachts.

“Marquis has no plans to shut down indefinitely,” Parmentier said in the statement. “Rather, we are in the process of selling our company to a buyer who will continue to operate Marquis in the manner you have come to expect.”

He also noted that Marquis will continue to build boats “with a limited, dedicated, and determined workforce” to ensure “the timely delivery of boats for participation in key boat shows.”

Although Marquis filed a notice with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development in order to let employees know of a possibility of a temporary closure, the press release said they were required by law to do so and did not intend to cause inaccurate media reports and confusion.

“We have a substantial backlog of boat orders and have seen a high volume of retail activity over the past few months,” Parmentier said. “By all accounts, we are off to a strong 2020. We are continuing to market and sell our boats.”

The Effect Of Brunswick's Decision On The Pre-Owned Sea Ray Market

By Peter Schmidt & Rob Bowman | Posted On Sep 20, 2018 Updated On Feb 25, 2019

Whether you own a Sea Ray or just follow the marine industry, the news that Brunswick Corporation discontinued production of both Sea Ray Yachts and Meridian Yachts was certainly a shock to everyone. Sea Ray has, of course, been a cornerstone of every major boat show for decade and considered the most well-known boat brand in America. In the early Sea Ray days of the 1970's and 80's, the boats  were not particularly well-built compared to the same luxury-level models of similar size and style. But at the price point they were offered, it became a more affordable boating option to middle-class America. Thousands of Sea Rays of all different sizes were sold during this time. Moving to the 1990's, Brunswick's ownership of Sea Ray allowed the brand to flourish and quality improved significantly. Although never really considered a high-quality luxury yacht, Sea Ray re-vamped their styling, design, and overall performance while maintaining a competitive price. With excellent marketing and an aggressive distribution channel, Sea Ray flourished in the mid-to-late 1990's into the early 2000's consistently out-selling competitive brands in their class like Carver , Regal Boats , and others. Then came the Great Recession in 2008 which decimated the marine industry by more than 60%. No one was spared from the struggle during this time, not even Sea Ray or its dealer network, which resulted in layoffs, a re-distribution of talented boat building workers, and little investment in new technology. At last the economy improved, the industry began thriving again, and Sea Ray began producing new models for a few, short years.

During the economic downturn and through the recovery, the direction of Sea Ray's once successful business model suddenly changed. Instead of focusing on particular price points, Sea Rays got bigger and more loaded down with electronics, options, and larger engines. They also got more expensive. Could Sea Ray move their once budget-cautious buyer up in price to the point that they would pay well over $2 million for a 60' yacht? Additionally during this time, it's the opinion of many in the industry that Sea Ray was plagued with quality issues, problems with fit and finish, dated designs, as well as strong competition from other well-run boat builders.

Read Practical Tips When Buying A Used Sea Ray Boat Or Yacht

While all of us outside of the Sea Ray business can only speculate as to everything that happened internally at Brunswick, the new business model did not seemingly go well as Brunswick decided to list Sea Ray as a "fire sale" in 2017. In an article announcing the sale on Trade Only Today , it was said, "Brunswick has been strategically focused on reducing the cyclical nature of its operations since the recession, when it recorded a 70 percent loss and saw its boat group stay in the red for several years. Its strategy has included investments in parts and accessories acquisitions — a low-margin but largely recession-proof part of the business. Freeing up cash with the Sea Ray sale is expected to help the company invest in mergers and acquisitions, as well as close pension gaps." Even though the business was offered publicly with hints of a bargain price, no buyer would come forward. This led to Brunswick's decision to keep the brand and discontinue offering the yacht line.

As of September, 2018 there are currently over 1,200 pre-owned Sea Ray yachts over 40' available for sale on the MLS. Just under 1,000 of those used Sea Rays are in the United States. So what prediction do we have on what this does for the market? Sea Ray dealers will certainly miss the model lines, although MarineMax is likely well suited to survive with Azimut and Galeon to fall back on somewhat. A boat builder out there may eventually buy the models and the name and take a run at re-launching a similar product. But current Sea Ray owners are likely concerned about the value of their boat with Sea Ray's decision. In the past, boat owners saw the value of their yachts decline when the manufacturer went out of business. Our prediction is that this is probably not the case and most Sea Rays on the market will continue to hold their value. Of course, the new boat depreciation will still apply, but once resale values settle down in a few years, Sea Ray boats should continue to do well on the brokerage market.

As mentioned there are well over a thousand used Sea Rays on the market today, many of them in Florida . Here's a sampling of several used Sea Ray Yachts currently for sale .

2016 Sea Ray L650 Flybridge  - Listed for $1,995,000

why did carver yachts go out of business

This particular Sea Ray L650 has the four-stateroom layout that includes a master suite, VIP stateroom, and two guest rooms with twin beds. This particular used Sea Ray is powered with CAT C-18 engines as well as equipped with twin Seakeeper Gyro stabilizers.

2017 Sea Ray L590  - Listed for $2,250,000

why did carver yachts go out of business

This particular Sea Ray L590 is a smaller model than the one listed above but a year newer and almost $300,000 more expensive. One difference in this particular boat from the previous model is the engine choice. This L590 comes with Cummins Zeus 600 QSC 8.3L engines as well as the Sky-Hook feature, joystick docking, and again, the Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizers.

2016 Sea Ray 540 Sundancer  - Listed for $1,050,000

why did carver yachts go out of business

Moving down an additional 5 feet while also going just one year older, the price drops significantly to just over $1 million for this Sea Ray 540 Sundancer. The Sundancers are also a different model line than the L-Class which appeals to the higher-end buyer at the Sea Ray spectrum. This particular Sea Ray 540 has a 2-stateroom, 2-head layout and is powered by twin Cummins Zeus 600 QSC T3 engines.

2016 Sea Ray 510 Sundancer  - Listed for $939,000

why did carver yachts go out of business

As you can see, even dropping from a 540 to a 510 Sundancer doesn't change the price a considerable amount. While the future of Sea Ray is unknown, there doesn't seem to be much fluctuation in the market value of quality, late-model pre-owned Sea Ray currently on the market. If you'd like to learn more about why you should list your pre-owned Sea Ray yacht for sale with United, please visit our Why List page . There is no larger network of boat buyers and sellers in the industry than at United Yacht Sales.

Did Carver Yachts Go Out of Business?

Bill Michaels

Are you an avid follower of the popular HBO series, Succession? If so, you may have spotted the ‘Aviva’, a 78-footer built by Feadship, used in the show. In this article, we’ll explore the yacht’s features and history, and discover why it was such a perfect fit for the drama-filled lives of the Roy family. Let’s dive in and take a closer look.

How Did the Yacht Feature in the Series?

The yacht Aviva featured prominently in the hit TV series Succession as the luxurious retreat of the wealthy Roy family. Throughout the series, the Roy family and their many guests are seen using the yacht for their lavish parties, vacations, and private business meetings. In one memorable scene, the entire family is seen enjoying a decadent dinner aboard the yacht.

The yacht also serves as the backdrop for the series’ dramatic cliffhangers, including a particularly tense confrontation between Kendall and Logan Roy. On the show, the Aviva is depicted as an impressive and luxurious vessel, but in actuality, the yacht is a 78-footer built by Feadship.

While the interior of the yacht was redesigned to fit the show’s aesthetic, the exterior and overall design remain the same.

The Aviva is also equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and features, including a jacuzzi, a private stateroom, and a full-service galley. Not only does the Aviva provide a stunning backdrop for the show, but it also serves as a symbol of the Roy family’s wealth and power. As the series progresses and the characters are forced to confront their personal and professional troubles, the yacht offers a much-needed escape from the struggles of the outside world.

The Yacht Aviva

If you are looking to buy a yacht similar to the one used in the TV series Succession, the ‘Aviva’ is the one for you. Built by Feadship, the 78-footer yacht is a great choice for those looking for a luxurious yacht experience.

It features a state-of-the-art master suite, a Jacuzzi, a well-equipped kitchen, a cinema room, and a full complement of water toys. Not to mention that the Aviva has a spacious sun deck and plenty of room for entertaining. Another plus of the Aviva is its customization features.

With the help of experienced designers, you can customize the yacht to your own tastes, from the paint job to the furniture. This makes the Aviva the perfect choice for those looking for a unique experience.

The Aviva is a great choice for those looking to buy a yacht similar to the one featured on the TV series Succession. It is spacious, luxurious, and customizable, and makes for a great experience for any kind of occasion. It is definitely worth considering if you are in the market for a yacht.

Who Built the Yacht?

The Yacht Aviva was built by the world-renowned Dutch boat-building company Feadship. Feadship is a well-known brand in the luxury yacht market, renowned for its high-end boat-building skills and craftsmanship. Feadship is especially known for its bespoke yachts, designed for specific customers, and the Aviva is no exception.

The Aviva was custom-built for the show’s production company, and was carefully designed to meet the exact requirements of the show’s writers. The Aviva is a 78-footer, and features a spacious interior, with wood panelling and comfortable seating.

The interior also includes several luxury amenities, such as a wet bar, a state-of-the-art kitchen, and a large sundeck. It also features a unique sound system, which was used to create a realistic ambience for the show.

The Aviva is a testament to Feadship’s craftsmanship, and it’s no wonder why Succession chose to use it in their series. It’s the perfect vessel for the show’s themes, and it provides viewers with a realistic look into the luxurious world of yacht ownership. If you’re looking for a yacht that will make your dreams come true, the Aviva is certainly worth considering.

What Does the Yacht Feature?

The yacht Aviva features many luxuries, including a swimming pool, cinema, private beach club, jacuzzi and several other amenities. It is also equipped with the latest navigational equipment, allowing it to reach remote destinations.

The luxurious interiors are decorated with fine art and modern furniture, while the exterior features a sleek and stylish look. The yacht also has a full-time crew to provide passengers with a top-notch experience. For those looking for some adventurous activities, the yacht is capable of providing various watersports and other activities.

The yacht is equipped with a helipad for convenient transportation.

The yacht Aviva offers a truly unique and memorable experience for anyone who has the pleasure of being on board. Aviva also has a variety of onboard entertainment options, from live music and DJ sets to movie screenings and games.

There is also a full-service bar and restaurant. For those looking to take advantage of the yacht’s impressive speed, Aviva can reach a top speed of over 20 knots, making it ideal for private trips and excursions. With its top-of-the-line amenities, Aviva is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to experience the luxury of a yacht in the comfort of their own home.

The vessel is equipped with a spacious flybridge, a large aft deck, and a main saloon offering stunning views of the open ocean.

Brunswick Corp. will not sell Sea Ray, Vonore plant to stay open

why did carver yachts go out of business

Sea Ray will not be sold, the boatmaker’s owner Brunswick Corp. has announced.

Sea Ray’s U.S. and international operations are headquartered in Knoxville. Its Tellico factory in Vonore makes the 40-foot SLX 400 model, dubbed “The Entertainer.” Facilities in Dandridge and Greeneville support Sea Ray production. The company’s Palm Coast factory is in Flagler Beach, Florida, while its Sykes Creek plant and Product Development & Engineering facility are on Merritt Island, Florida.

In December 2017, Brunswick announced it would sell all those facilities, expecting to close a sale of the Sea Ray brand by mid-2018.

More: Owner of boatmaker Sea Ray, with Vonore factory and Knoxville office, floats sale

Instead, Brunswick will discontinue its Florida-built yachts , closing those facilities, Brunswick Director of Media Relations and Corporate Communications Daniel Kubera said. The Sykes Creek site will remain open for the foreseeable future to handle customer service, warranty questions and related issues.

“In the end, we’ve decided that the best path forward is to keep operating the Sea Ray brand,” he said. “We’re going to focus on sport boats and cruisers, which are made in Tellico. The sale process has been halted.”

Headquartered in Mettawa, Illinois, Brunswick Corp. owns multiple marine motor, boat accessory, fitness and recreation brands, as well as 15 labels in Brunswick Boat Group. Only Sea Ray was put up for sale.

“Over the last several months, we have engaged in a thorough sale process for the Sea Ray business, which we believed would generate the highest value for our shareholders,” Brunswick Chairman and CEO Mark Schwabero said in a news release. “Although there was interest in the business, the offers we received did not reflect an appropriate value for this premium brand, and did not meet our expectations. The lower value was largely due to the persistently weak financial performance of the yacht product category, which complicated and obscured the value of the remainder of Sea Ray.”

So the company decided to “maximize value” by winding down yacht production over the next few months, focusing Sea Ray on sport boats and cruisers, he said.

The emphasis will be on 24- to 40-foot boats, developing new products, features and services for that range, David Foulkes, Brunswick president for marine consumer solutions, said in the announcement.

Demonstrating that commitment, Brunswick is moving Sea Ray out of the “discontinued operations” category of its financial reporting, and into “continuing operations,” according to the news release.

The Palm Coast plant will close soon, with most of the Merritt Island facility to follow by September. Those moves will cost up to 825 jobs, the company announced.

Sea Ray’s engineering facility will combine with the Boston Whaler engineering location, an hour away in Edgewater, Florida, Kubera said. Brunswick owns both brands. The combined facility will be called the Brunswick Fiberglass Boat Technology Center. Sea Ray product development will continue there, Kubera said. Some Florida Sea Ray employees may be able to transfer to other Brunswick-owned boat marques.

Prior to the Florida shutdown, Sea Ray employs about 1,500 nationwide, Kubera has said. About 600 of those work at the Tellico West Industrial Park plant. A year ago the Tellico plant expanded, adding workers to increase SLX 400 production.

Decisions about any employment changes at the Knoxville headquarters will be made over the next few months as the Florida yacht operations wind down. Kubera said. He said no cuts are expected at Tellico.

“We will continue to turn out new boats with new features,” he said. “Tellico will keep operating as it’s operating.”

Sea Ray, founded in Michigan in 1959, built the Tellico factory in 1985. A year later Brunswick bought the company for $350 million, on the heels of buying boatmaker Bayliner for $425 million, according to BoatTEST.com.

At that time Sea Ray sold 28,000 boats a year, but today only sells about a tenth of that, BoatTEST.com reported. In 1986 Sea Ray had 4,500 workers, but now employs a third of that number.

Annual sales, pegged at $400 million in 1986, dropped to $380 million for 2017, and Sea Ray operates at a loss, BoatTest.com said, quoting a company spokesperson.

Sea Ray was not alone in its decline; overall, new boat sales in the U.S. dropped by more than half from 2000 to 2017, according to BoatTEST.com.
