Many yachts call Rybovich in West Palm Beach (Also known as WPB for short) one of their home ports. It’s a handy base for those yacht owners who want to keep their boat based in the US or who charter heavily from the US. It’s also a huge favourite for yacht crew due to the extensive facilities onside at Rybovich Marina. More on that later.
Here’s an easy guide for Yacht Chefs arriving at Rybovich West Palm Beach for the first time.
Where to provision in Rybovich
Of course, the big-name provisioners deliver within Rybovich. Using provisioners is always going to make your life a lot easier, especially if you are wintering in Rybo and are down to a skeleton galley crew.
Generally, the security staff know who the provisioners are and you don’t have to let them know when you have a delivery coming, but, to be on the safe side, Give them a quick buzz. Especially if your provisioner of choice is a smaller company and may be unknown to the yard staff.
Another great help with the Rybovich Marina is that the staff of Rybo are always willing to lend a hand if they are available. This is great if you are doing smaller orders and you can get their attention for a cheeky golf cart ride to make life easier.

Costco West Palm Beach
Costco West Palm beach is about a 20-minute drive away. When you first head out there, make sure you take your passport and boat papers. You will need this to set up your Costco membership.
Costco is somewhat like Metro in Europe. You will be able to get a lot of the basics in bulk. But they lack the guest quality side of things.
Unlike Europe, do not rely on Costco for produce. It tends to be very basic, but it’s ok for things like crew apples, tomatoes and bulk lettuce. You will not find high-end catering items like micro herbs and baby veg at Costco.
Meat products tend to be decent actually. You can buy vac-sealed striploin and tenderloin at decent prices while still being high quality. They are in the perfect proportions for crew meats assuming you are on a bigger vessel.
Dairy, cheeses and frozen produce are also really good here, as are the staples like rice and bread. The overall selection of goods isn’t so diverse for dry goods, but if you just need basics or you are not concerned about what brand of passata you buy, it’s worth stocking up.

Wholefoods West Palm
Wholefoods in West Palm is close to Rybo. Just head out to the Outlet Mall and its part of that. If you are short on a crew car and just need to grab a few things, the Rybo Bus will happily take you and pick you back up.
Wholefoods West Palm Beach has all the nice high-end products, perfect for guest food. You can also find a great selection of gluten-free and vegan products. They stock plenty of vegan cheese and nut milk, along with the impossible meat range.
Their produce is great quality and they have plenty of variety. Fruit platters are made easy with their exotic fruit range. They have an extensive organic section for produce too if you need it.
Whole foods also have a decent selection of imported cheeses and cold cuts.

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Seven days a week
Publix West Palm Beach
Publix is your generic sell-everything type of supermarket in Florida. Think of it like a Carrefour. It’s only 15 minutes drive from Rybovich, over on “the Island”.
Pick up the bulk of your dry goods, crew food, and produce here. You can buy generic and brand-name food items at Publix. They even have a small section with English food for the Brits on board!
There is plenty of parking and often the staff will help you with bags if you have a lot.
This Publix is easier to shop at for yacht provisions because of the parking, the other Publix in West Palm Beach is in the Cityalk mall, which can get busy.
Address: 135 Bradley Pl, Palm Beach, FL 33480, USA
Phone: +1 561-655-4120
Opening hours: Monday-Sunday 6:30am- 10pm
Asian Supermarkets
West Palm Beach is lucky that its Asian supermarkets are in a little cluster. It’s a short 20-minute drive to them, and you should be able to bounce around between the 3 of them to find everything you need easily enough.
Food Town West Palm Beach
Food Town is a one-stop supermarket for pretty much all “ethnic” ingredients. It started as a Jamaican Supermarket and has since expanded to have a wide variety of foods from the Middle East, India, The Caribbean and Asia. If you have been to Carrefour St Martin recently, imagine that, but about 6 times bigger. It’s pretty amazing for out-of-the-ordinary ingredients.
Expect to find regular milk amongst the Paneer, Kefir and Goats milk. There must be about 200 different kinds of hot sauces from all over the world dotted down every aisle. They have a wide variety of fresh noodles, produce you may not even recognise, and cuts of meat your usual charter guest may not ask for yes, you need to order in advance for goat and some types of offal. Ask at the front desk.

Stockists of many East Asian spices, herbs and dry goods.

Vinh Hung Oriental Market
They have a reasonable stock of dry goods such as sauces and noodles. The owners are Vietnamese so they tend to have more Viet and Chinese products. Their Japanese selection is very small. Grab a Ban Mi on your way out if you are hungry, it’s delicious!
Address: 1749 N Military Trl West Palm Beach, FL 33409

Let us know your favourite spots for provisioning in Rybovich West Palm Beach and we can add them to the list.
Local Bars and restaurants
West Palm Beach is a hot spot for casual dining options and semi-hipster bars. Almost everything is based on Clematis Street, which is a fun easy street to walk down. I’m sure if you use your spidey senses, you will be able to sniff out plenty of great watering holes on your won. But if you need a quick guide, check out the below spots.
E.R Bradleys Saloon
Open-air, an open-late tavern where ladies are known to dance on the bar, serving bar eats & breakfast. If the weather is good, this is a great spot to start or end your night. There’s plenty of outdoor seating and the vibe is casual, relaxed and very laid back. The food is generally American pub food, great to wash a few beers down with, but don’t expect fine dining in quality or presentation.
Address: 104 S Clematis St, West Palm Beach, FL 33401
Avocado Grill
A huge favourite amongst yacht crew at Rybovich, you will no doubt bump into plenty of crew you already know from the Rybo bar. You have been warned.
Expect the usual West Palm crowd, summery dresses and tidy tee’s or shirts for the guys, nothing extravagant, but it is dressier than Bradleys. They do an epic Brunch menu, and its the perfect spot for crew days off if you are lucky enough to swing a weekend off. The food menu should please even the fussiest crew member (yes, I’m looking at you, Gluten-free, Vegan, well, sometimes with a dairy intolerance when it suits type of crew) and the cocktails are easy to drink… Take plenty of money as you will end up spending longer here than you intended, and no doubt spend more too 😉
Address : 125 Datura Street, West Palm Beach, FL
Getting around West Palm Beach
The drivers of the Rybovich Shuttle will drop you off and pick you up from designated points around West Palm Beach. Ask each driver, and make sure you grab their phone numbers. These are subject to change, so we haven’t listed them here.
If you choose uber or rideshare, expect to pay around $8, and it takes 8-12 minutes depending on traffic. Walking takes a bit of time, and there’s a bit of a dodgy area that you must walk through, so it is not advised to do so after dark.
If you are taking the crew car in, there is plenty of paid parking in secure carparking on Clematis Street. You will need a crew car to get to various supermarkets and other places, so hopefully your boat has organised one in advance.
The Brightline train service runs between West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. It’s highly recommended over the somewhat dodgy local train. Pay a bit more and travel in style anyways, it’s safer, and cleaner, and they have wine and beer! 🙂 Word on the street is that they often give discounted rides for crew staying at Rybovich, so make sure to ask about it when you dock.
Crew Days off in West Palm Beach
Finally, a day off after drop off day, relax. Or not… perhaps you want to explore a little further out from Rybo and see what else is about.
If you have access to a car and a whole weekend off, consider heading North… or South
- Lake Okeechobee and its surroundings are great for nature lovers to get away, and it’s only a couple of hours’ drive. Book a place on Airbnb and make the most of the peace and quiet.
- Head further up the coast to Disneyworld… it might be a bit cheesy, but it can be good to YOLO and just enjoy that childlike wonder too!
- Cape Canaveral is also up that way, so check out their website to see if there are any rocket launches to watch. Nerd out and invite an engineer, they are always up for this sort of weekend!
- Heading South, of course, you have Miami… Check into South beach and drink cocktails and hit the nightlife in Wynwood. release that inner hipster and eat every taco in sight!
- Feeling like a longer drive? Easy- Florida Keys are a few hours further… Stop in Islamorada to stretch your legs and enjoy how different it is down there. West Palm will feel like a dream in no time.
If you only have a half-day off or a single day, don’t despair. The area around Rybo has a lot going on.
- Hit up the Palm Beach outlets for a bit of shopping to refresh that wardrobe. The Rybovich shuttle can take you and pick you up if you need it.
- The West Palm Beach Green Market is a fabulous market that pops up on Saturdays. Don’t expect to pick up mass quantities of produce for guests or crew, but there is a great selection of the usual farmers’ market items. Grab a coffee and wander the stalls.
- There are escape rooms in West Palm Beach if you are looking for a crew team-building activity… I know, being stuck in a room with the crew may not be what you are looking for in your downtime, but, horses for courses.
- Just kick back and enjoy the serenity by heading to the beach. It’s obvious, sure, but sometimes we forget the little things.
Dock walking in Rybovich
Dock walking isn’t allowed in Rybovich Marina. But there are of course people who slip through the cracks and manage to do it… but be warned, it is not recommended. There is a lot of staff working at Rybo, and they are vigilant.
The biggest threat of it all is losing your visa. You CANNOT dock walk on a B1/B2 visa, so if you are considering duckwalking in Rybo while holding this visa, understand that if you are caught by the wrong people, you will not just be thrown out of the marina. You will be in trouble with US immigration and consequently lose your visa and be banned from the US for some time. It is not worth it.
Rybovich Marina
The crew facilities at Rybo far exceed most marinas you will have spent time in… it is constantly voted the number one marina in the US for yacht crew, and I dare say it may be one of the best in the world in terms of facilities.
Rybo boasts a crew area with a couple of BBQs, perfect for yacht chefs who need some fresh air. Give the tongs to some of the safer crew and sit back with a few cold ones, they are usually only too happy to take over cooking duties for the evening!
There is a decent size swimming pool along with plenty of sun loungers for the sun-seekers on board, and a cozy fire pit in the evenings for those late-night drinking sessions. The crew area at Rybo also has dart boards, a corn hole game, a pool table, table tennis, game consoles, oh yeah, and free WIFI.
Gym bunnies will be happy to know there is a very well equipped gym inside with blasting cold aircon. Lift those weights and make those gains while you have the time ashore!
The Rybo bar is perhaps most crew members’ favourite part of the marina. Sure, they do happy hour beers for a few bucks apiece, and $5 mimosas on Sundays, but they also offer a cracking food menu. There is a fresh sushi bar to the side, and also a regular “pub” type menu with burgers, salads, fish and fries.

Take a sneak peek at the biggest and most expensive boats at 2024's Palm Beach yacht show
- The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
- Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
- These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.
The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.
While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.
Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).
These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.
Nero: 90.1 meters
Price: From $497,000 a week (charter) Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool
Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.
She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.
For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.
Victorious: 85 meters
Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom
Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.
For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.
She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.
Casino Royale: 72 meters
Price: TBD Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi
Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).
Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.
Talisman C: 70.6 meters
Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter) Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library
Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.
Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.
Joy: 70 meters
Price: From $650,000 a week Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor
Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.
There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.
Triumph: 65.4 meters
Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat
This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.
She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.
Seanna: 64.5 meters
Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter) Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool
The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.
Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.
There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.
Come Together: 60 meters
Price: $65,000,000 Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna
Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.
The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.
The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Our History
Proudly a part of the fabric of Palm Beach County, Florida since 1910, we began building boats for the same reason we continue today – to improve on what is on the water. What began as a commercial fishing operation and a small boat repair business has since evolved into the builder of the world's premier sportfishing yachts, unrivaled in design and finish, and synonymous with innovation and the pursuit of perfection. While our family business has operated at different locations and with different names over the years, we have always subscribed to the same philosophy: Listen, think, and create. That philosophy is grounded in hard work, a dedication to our craft, and the partnership that we forge with every customer that puts their trust in us.
The Birth of John Rybovich & Sons
In 1919, John "Pop" Rybovich started his small commercial boat repair yard when he moved from commercial fishing to servicing the boats of the early commercial fishing fleet of the Palm Beach area. The West Palm Beach yard quickly gained a reputation for its skill and attentiveness, and as the sportfishing concept of the 1930's grew in popularity, Pop and his three sons, Johnny, Tommy and Emil, were at the center of a new industry converting the power cruisers of the nearby Palm Beach elite to chase Sailfish just outside Lake Worth Inlet.
Miss Chevy II
Following the return of Johnny, Tommy and Emil from World War II, each with the skills they had developed overseas, the idea was born to build a boat dedicated to sportfishing. In 1947, that idea became a reality, and the first custom sportfishing boat, Miss Chevy II , was launched. In the years that followed, the sport that was their passion as well as their livelihood grew in popularity, and the boys grew with it, honing their skills and working with owners to build a better-riding, more innovative and more beautiful boat.
The Broken Sheer and Miss Chevy IV
Tommy's passing.
From 1947 to 1972, the brothers launched 75 hulls, each better than the last and each with their own unique character and innovations. Johnny, the fisherman, brought new ideas and oversaw management, Tommy, the designer and builder, oversaw the carpentry and painting trades, and Emil, the engineer, directed all mechanical and electrical work in new construction as well as in service. Of the three dedicated brothers, it was Tommy's obsession with his work that became legendary and provided the energy and inspiration in the yard's incessant quest for perfection. However, two years after the passing of the family patriarch, Pop Rybovich, Tommy Rybovich passed from cancer in 1972. The soul of the yard, and the head of design and hull building, had passed far too young at the age of 52.
New Owners of the Family Business
Michael becomes head boat builder.
By the time of the sale in 1975, Michael Rybovich, Emil’s son and the next generation of Rybovich boat builders, was working at the family boatyard developing his skills as a carpenter, while fishing when the time allowed. The new owner, Bob Fisher, insisted that Johnny and Emil (and Michael) continue working at their family’s business. But, by 1980, both Johnny and Emil found the changes were too much for their liking and decided to part ways with the business – around this time, Michael became the head boat builder.
A New Family Business
In 1984, Michael, too, decided to leave and with his father, Emil, his brother, Marty Evans, and family friend, Ed Bussey, started a boat building company called Rybovich International with the goal continuing to innovate the world of sportfishing and build a better boat. The first of those new hulls was Ruthie , a 32' Walkaround built for Charlie Bouchard, based on a concept that legendary angler, Nick Smith, had applied to a 30' Daytona . The boat proved a great fishing platform and, with her new bottom, could fish in rough water alongside boats twice her size.
Ryco Marine
Following the second sale of the original family business in 1986, a lawsuit forced Rybovich International to abandon their name, as well as the " Rybovich signature" broken sheer and double handrail designs. Vowing to continue on and not wanting to get involved in a lengthy legal battle, Ryco Marine was born. The trend of building larger sportfishing boats continued, and by the mid-1990's, Ryco Marine was building boats into the 60' class.
Back to the Family Business
By the early 2000s, the original family business was in the hands of H. Wayne Huizenga Jr., the fourth owner since the family sold the business in 1975. In 2005, following Hurricane Wilma and extensive damage to the Ryco Marine facility, a partnership was formed and Michael joined with Huizenga – a Rybovich was once again building Rybovich boats under the Rybovich name. For the next four years the new company flourished, and during this time, Rybovich & Sons delivered five boats from 54 to 78 feet, the last two being the largest ever built under the family name. As the world recession deepened in 2008, the once full order book became an empty testament to the bad economy. In early 2010, management was forced to make several difficult decisions, including shelving new construction altogether to focus on the development of a full-service super yacht marina at the Riviera Beach site.
Michael Rybovich & Sons
Following the Great Recession of 2008 and a desire to focus on a super yacht marina and service yard, the partnership with H. Wayne Huizenga Jr. was amicably dissolved, and the search for a new home began. Soon after, the most recent rebirth of the Rybovich boat building name came to fruition when Michael and his wife Julia (with the help of family friend, Larry Wilson) purchased the old E&H Boat Works in Palm Beach Gardens, FL and opened Michael Rybovich & Sons Custom Boat Works . Today, we operate as a family business dedicated to the same ideals of innovation and the pursuit of perfection that helped build the Rybovich name. Michael, along with his two sons, Dusty Rybovich and Alex Gill , and the most talented crew in the industry, strive to carry on a tradition that started more than 100 years ago in a small boatyard in West Palm Beach.
The Unabridged History
In 1934, Gifford, the Cass brothers, Bill Fagen , and Lloyd Knowles collaborated in the design and building of a reel that would stand up to the stress of hooking and landing large Marlin and Tuna. This reel became known as the Knowles Tuna Reel . In 1935, Ernest Hemingway landed the first un-mutillated Giant Bluefin Tuna in the Bahamas. In 1936, Fred Grieten applied for a patent for the first Fin-Nor fishing reel , which was built to Tommy Gifford's specifications. In the 1930s, Frank O'Brien designed and built the Tycoon Bimini King rod which would provide the mount and the leverage for the new reel technology. The new equipment provided sportsmen with the means and the advent of the 1939 Cat Cay Tuna Tournament provided the arena. In 1937 Johnny was invited to fish Bimini and Cat Cay with a local captain and landed his first Blue Marlin. Two years later he landed his first Giant Bluefin. Johnny was beginning to realize the desperate need for a boat designed and built specifically for big game sport fishing but the realization of that concept would have to wait. His country would soon need his and his brothers' services for bigger fish.
It is clear that all three young men developed an even greater interest in the family business and acquired an education in their respective special talents while in their country's service. Johnny's service taught him business skills and introduced him to the emerging material technology in Military hardware. Emil, a self taught mechanical engineer, was exposed to the engineering and performance standards within the fleet of Army boats for which he was responsible. Tommy was absorbed with aerodynamics, aircraft construction, and the beauty and efficiency of a clean line which is so important in aircraft design. The combination of these skills post war would prove to be a study in excellence.
Of the three dedicated brothers, it was Tommy 's obsession with his work that became legendary and provided the energy and inspiration in the yard's incessant quest for perfection. He worked from eight in the morning to eight at night, went home for dinner and returned to the yard, typically working until eleven p.m. and beyond. Sundays were half-days to allow time for the family. With no formal training in naval architecture, Tommy's early designs were based on known lengths, beams, and displacements of similar vessels that were accessible in the service yard. Suffice it to say that from the waterline up, the design was all his.
The first project in which he was involved was the Chevy Clipper , a 47' long-range fisherman for none other than Charles Johnson . His third Rybovich build, Chevy Clipper again satisfied Johnson's thirst for having something no one else had. With a galley and salon under a forward trunk, crew forward, and a private master suite under an aft trunk, she combined the modern broken sheer with the additional volume provided by a traditional trunk arrangement fore and aft with a six-foot fishing cockpit. To eliminate the inefficiency of gasoline engines with enough power to push a boat of that size at a respectable cruise speed, she was the first Rybovich to be built with diesel power . To keep Tommy's sleek profile low, Emil installed a pair of "incline" G.M. 6-71 's which had the blocks rotated along the shaft centerline to lower the height by 5" compared with the original upright Grey Marine version. Jack's introduction to Charles Johnson on that project was the beginning of a long relationship between the two pioneers.
In 1957 Roger Firestone , who owned the 43' " Tireless " insisted that his boat be converted to diesel power and he didn't give a damn how it was accomplished. After a lot of thought, Johnny and Emil decided to go the other way. Instead of raising the boat, they would drop the engines --- literally. They cut out the bottom of the boat beneath the oil pan and gear and dropped the Caterpillar engines that Firestone had specified, straight down between the main stringers. When John Sr. walked by the boat the following day and saw one of the engines protruding for the bottom of the hull he gave Johnny hell for ruining the man's boat. Johnny tried to explain but the old man would have none of it. Johnny and Emil did have a plan. They fashioned airfoil-shaped blisters out of fiberglass and projected the shaft log along the new shaft line out the aft end of the blister and glued and bolted the assembly to the hull. When the project was completed the boat had a flatter, more efficient shaft angle and performed beautifully with greater range and no loss in performance. Several other boats were converted in this manor before low profile diesels were made available in the years that followed.
Prior to 1958, the yard used resorcinol glue for most all its adhesive applications. Its use was common in many boatyards and did an adequate job of holding things together, although its adhesive properties were known to diminish over time. That year, a customer named George Molle ordered a boat from Rybovich under one condition, that his boat would be built using a catalyzed epoxy resin instead the conventional glue. Epoxy had been developed for the aircraft industry in WW II as a means of bonding aluminum but as far as anyone knew, it had never been used to glue a wooden boat together. Tommy experimented with the new material and agreed to Molle's request. The new glue turned out to be far stronger and have many more applications than resorcinol and became the standard not only in new construction but in the repair side of the business as well.
The boat was completed as a yard project and had the first pair of jet-drives installed locally. She was extremely fast but the jet drives produced unpredictable handling characteristics and were soon abandoned for conventional drive. The experiment had been a success. The boat was sold to yard customer Eddie Crawford , and was fished hard for many years from the Palm Beaches to Hawaii. She is still an eye-catcher and in beautiful condition today.
In 1966 Johnny introduced the " Tournament of Champions ", which was a tournament designed to raise money for conservation. At the end of the competition each year, the winner would decide on what conservation project his winnings should be spent. Early sonic tagging experiments on billfish were paid for through funds realized through that tournament. Throughout the 60s, the continued decline in local fishing stocks was a cause for great concern with Johnny. It was clear to him that the mortality rate of sailfish hooked and released on live bait was much higher than those released on dead bait. In 1972 Johnny founded the Gold Cup Tournament , which awarded significantly more points for fish caught on dead bait. These tournaments and a great deal of research projects were born out of Johnny's love and respect for the sport on which he had built his family's business, and for the cause of marine conservation to which he dedicated the last 30 years of his life.

Rybovich – the Legend Continues! by Capt. Chuck Gnaegy “Saayell-Fiisshh...!” The Rybovich legend was in full cry, and growing. “Fish on! Sail on!” the Captain whooped, while in quick succession the helmsman hauled back on the throttle, the angler set the hook with a series of short, quick jolts; then 100 yards astern, a magnificent sailfish leapt, soared, danced, pranced in its dazzling display of acrobatics, aerobatics. The angler, a young real estate developer from Ocean City, Maryland, was breathless as he fought the beautiful sail, but he managed to shout, “This boat raises fish like none other on the planet!” At the end of that day in a four-day event he had caught, and released, seven brilliant kings of the sea, and won the most auspicious sailfish tourney in the world. Rybovich, “the Cadillac of sportfish” had brought it home again. Long revered by sportfishermen as the finest in its class, the Rybovich reputation grew for an entire generation. The “fish finder,” hull design projected a mysterious aura that lured fish to its transom. Top anglers praised it. Rybo’s 65’ model was much larger than the 45’ boats used by most tournament anglers and its interior was on a par with today’s high-end motoryachts. As the leader in sportfishing, anglers such as millionaire Jim K., who even at that time wore a gold earring in his left ear, owned Rybo’s cold-molded models. Others copied Rybo’s innovations such as its fighting chair. However, gradually things changed, and the Rybovich brand slipped from prominence as it was challenged by a number of other sportfish builders. That was 30 years ago; yet today there are exciting new interests and developments for the Rybovich name. Now, enter a new generation, with exciting plans for a mammoth South Florida renovation, with a novel, and very effective team concept. The new company includes Rybovich Marina – Boatyard, and soon to come 600-ton dry-docking, residences, restaurants, shopping, a whole village catering to megayacht enhancement and development.

Heading up the Rybovich resurrection... Wayne Huizenga, Jr. (shown left), scion of the Huizenga Miami Dolphins, Stadium, Marlins, Panthers, and Waste Management ownership, acquired the Rybovich-Spencer property and facilities near West Palm Beach, Florida, in February 2004. He owned a Rybovich sportfish himself, was impressed by the name and reputation, and projected an expanded future for the company. He contacted Michael Rybovich, grandson of the original family; inviting him back into the fold. Michael S. Bach (shown right), Director of Sales and Marketing, a graduate in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin, sailed One Design sailboats as a youngster, which accounts for his salty know-how and enthusiasm. He held positions with Palmer Johnson and Intermarine, in larger yacht administration, before taking over the job at Rybovich.

And what are they doing? Major developments are under construction one mile south of the Port of Palm Beach Inlet, for the entire complex, which will include 31,700 sq.ft. of enclosed work shop space, a 600-ton Travelift and depths of 14’, with no bridges from the Atlantic Ocean and Inland Waterway. (The current 300-ton Travelift will handle a 157’ Trinity aluminum yacht). Now, more than 100 skilled shipwrights and craftsmen make humming progress on this rising new maritime star. In addition, a new service complex nears completion just north at Riviera Beach. But this is only the beginning. There are also other marinas and yards in Riviera Beach, which some refer to as “Rybovich North.” There may be a time to rebrand the operation, Bach says, but that’s far down the road at this time. Photo Caption: Every weekend, Peanut Island is a party destination for 100's of boats, rafting up in a flotilla that rivals the Columbus Day Regatta in Miami. It's become a popular spot for crews to let loose when the work is done.
RYBOVICH Aerial Shot.JPG
Bach proudly showed us around the bustling property, which is electric with its spirited shipwrights and busy construction crews. The yard itself is huge, about a quarter mile long and almost that wide along the Inland Waterway; prime land in West Palm Beach, Florida. The docking area equals that in size. There is space set aside for a helicopter landing pad as well as numerous – up to 240’ – dockage facilities. About one third has been relegated to Rybovich yacht building, the original design. Several completed models are there now, in drydock, and two new hulls have just been completed, awaiting interiors. “Rybovich Marina-Boatyard, the property,” Bach says, “ right now goes out from the expanse of land here, to within a hundred yards of the day marker which is the boundary of the Intra coastal waterway, and that is several hundred yards off the paved marine property. So we have the job of dredging the bottom out to that point, plus increasing and maintaining the depth so that we’ll be able to berth boats of the size our new docks will mandate. Photo Caption: Rybo's revitalization is attracting some serious clientèle. The enormous blue-hulled beauty below is Delta's new 240' "Laurel". Not a boat you want maneuver around the Peninsula Bend of New River!
RYBOVICH Aerial Zoom.JPG
In sequence, we are building out our new boatyard on the north end of the property. A new L-shaped building is in place, still in the construction stage as of this writing, but soon to be completed (by May) and housing large yachts. “The 600-ton lift will probably be able to handle a 200+-footer. We’re associated with the yacht Floridian, a 228’ yacht which we could pick up with the new machine. So we’re obviously moving our facility to accommodate the larger end of the market. We are poised for this with our 40,000 sq.ft. state of the art mega-yacht repair facility.” Photo Caption: The building in the background is where Michael Rybovich continues with his namesake's heritage. Mike runs the boat building division, known as Rybovich & Sons, cold-molding 45’ to 68’ sportfishing yachts. The slab of concrete to the left and wrapping around the rear is the foundation for 40,000 sq. ft. of trade center space, shown in the next two photographs below.
ConstructionSite Zoom.JPG
The program is designed to develop in various phases, from what Bach numbers as Phase 1 to Phase 4. With intelligent management organization, the structure arises under the direction of dedicated Project Managers, Team Leaders. Bach explains, “Our skilled technicians and craftsmen are a company within a company. Each is responsible to a Project Team and together they comprise all facets of our service facility.” The team environment gives each employee a sense of project ownership and responsibility. This approach is expected to make pride of performance a major attribute of employee contribution, and elevate the efficiency and quality of the work. To this end the company holds regular “Megayacht Captains’ Meetings” to get a client’s take on developments. Photo Caption: Stringers and bulkheads in place...
New Building Shell.JPG
The company’s management style also embraces programs to educate new craftsmen and yachting aficianadoes. In conjunction with the Palm Beach and Riviera Beach school systems, the company invests time and money not only for property development, but through the Police Athletic League. More than half a million dollars are being spent to foster youngsters’ development. Additional funds are invested in training local work forces; a classroom setting onsite, featuring a hands-on maritime school. Not an apprenticeship program per se, it involves instruction for specific trades, such as carpenters, metal workers, painters, rigging, etc. Those attitudes and activities, however, blend with the major tenet, the primary goal; and that is to put the needs of guests first. “No matter how challenging the job,” Bach says, outlining the stated company policy, “our primary mission is to see that each vessel gets the personal attention it deserves, which means service at the highest levels. We want to foster the idea of a comfortable destination, for owners and crews. We are our clients’ home for their time here. And there is a very hospitable feeling within the yard.” Huizenga himself, a pleasant man in spite of his responsibilities, is well regarded by the workers as well as the visitors. Photo Caption: Planking the hull...
Building Walls.JPG
”We want to create an environment which is a destination,” Bach continues. That means we’ll have a marina, a yard, a retail center, with a restaurant, coffee shop, chandlery, you name it. Office chores such as accounting, purchasing, sales, marketing, will be in the Riviera Beach location. All our properties will have the same name, the same brand; a centralized group that looks after all business functions. “In essence,” Bach says, “we plan what will be a “Bahia Mar North,” right next to West Palm Beach. That’s keeping in mind our owner once refurbished Bahia Mar, and that was to enhance repair and shore power requirements, fuel capacities, connfiguration of the docks to fit megayachts. Walkways were not limited to 15’ wide, so when the golf cart comes through there’s still room for people. Photo Caption: Clockwise from top left are the three phases of development. Phase I is the new yard. Phase II is the new marina and docks. Phase III are the shops, residences & restaurant.
Rybo Site Plan.JPG
The haul-out and repair facility will dry-dock as many as seven 200’, 600-ton yachts, plus numerous others in the 75’ to 180’ range. There will also be a public marina on the south side of the repair yard. ”Our owner’s philosophy,” he continues, “ is to provide a marina where you can dock, where you can expect good work, or you can just enjoy the atmosphere, the shopping, dining, etc. So far that hasn’t been the case in this area, on this scale. So we’re providing a new facility that yacht owners can utilize to the limit, where the option has not been here before at this level.” July, 2007, is the target date for completion of Rybovich / Phase I, the water area, dredging, dockage – all associated with the boat yard – including a heli-pad, into the fall. Next, Phase II, is to build out the docks; Phase III is the retail end, the top-class restaurant and shoppes, coffee shop, chandlery, where yachtsmen and women can enjoy themselves. Phase IV is what finances the whole operation, the residential areas; and those will be luxe apartments and condos to provide permanent or seasonal homes for Rybovich clients who long for luxury living ashore as well as on their megayachts. Photo Caption: Artist's rendering of the new haul out & repair facility.
Rybo North Side Artists Rendering.JPG
So that is the cornerstone of Rybovich’s new beginning in this area. The new program – nestled quietly into place a couple of years ago – is not only comprehensive, but a well thought out business model that will cover all bases. The Huizenga/Rybovich cartel will continue the hallowed brand name, with Michael Rybovich in a prominent role, still building Rybovich’s famous fish-raising sportsfishermen. Much larger facilities in this three-phase program are sure to re-enliven the Palm Beach stretch along Florida’s length of the Inland Waterway. Rybovich spent years as the pinnacle of yacht ownership and service. It is surely on the heading to achieve its early greatness. <end> By Chuck Gnaegy New Yard Phases & Capacity: Phase I...
