7 Eco-Conscious Yachts That Are Changing the Future of Boating, From Zero-Carbon Catamarans to Hybrids
Pure-electric trawlers and hydrogen-powered sailing vessels sound like sci fi, but they'll be on the water soon..
Yachting and sustainability may sound like a paradox, but we’re steadily seeing the marine world embrace eco-change. For the yachting world, there are an increasing number of ways to boat with a lower carbon imprint. From electric-diesel hybrids to zero-carbon catamarans powered by alternative fuel sources, here is a closer look at the newest eco-conscious yachts on the water—as well as several concepts that will be on the market in the next year, and a sailing vessel that helped start the emissions-reduction trend among superyachts.
Azimut Seadeck
Having the world’s largest yacht builder embrace sustainability promises to exert pressure on hundreds of smaller builders around the world. When the three-model Azimut Seadeck series is launched, the combination of complementary emissions-reducing technologies promises to be a major milestone for yachting.
“This is the most efficient yacht ever designed by Azimut,” said Federico Lantero, head of Product Design at Azimut/Benetti, at an event announcing the series. “We’ve identified the most recent technologies over the years, so we sat together said let’s raise the bar once again. Let’s push these technologies to the limits. It’s been like assembling a big puzzle.”
The Italian shipyard promises above-average efficiency at a wide range of speeds: The official estimates predict an emission reduction of 40 percent, thanks to Seadeck’s diesel-electric hybrid systems, lightweight carbon-fiber superstructure, solar panels, and other energy-absorption solutions.
Monaco-based designer Alberto Mancini, who penned the exterior, teamed up with other Italian designers Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez, who completed the sleek interior design. Thun and Rodriquez infused the interior with the newest sustainable materials, including cork, which they describe as the “best alternative to teak.”
The concept of Seadeck’s large open aft section—dubbed “Fun Island,” follows the success of the extended deck of sister builder’s Benetti Oasis. That design was a game-changer in its wellness-outdoor living approach. Azimut will release the Seadeck models in the next 20 months, starting with the Seadeck 6 in early 2024.
Alva Yachts Ocean Eco 90 H2
In the past couple of years, German catamaran and sailboat builder Alva Yachts has turned heads with its innovative solar catamarans. But now it’s pushing boundaries farther with the announcement of what it’s calling “the first zero-emissions superyacht catamaran to run without fossil fuels.”
The Ocean Eco 90 H2 is a special 90-foot version of the Ocean Eco 90 series, the shipyard’s flagship model. It comes in two versions: full electric and hybrid diesel-electric. The new model is the company’s first venture into hydrogen. Dubbed a “fuel-less superyacht catamaran with wings,” the H2 was requested by an existing Alva owner. It is powered only by sustainable sources, including the sun, wind, electric energy, and hydrogen fuel cells. The company’s signature solar cells generate up to 40kWp of power while twin performance electric motors give power, with the aid of the Ayro Oceanwings wind-propulsion system.
Oceanco ‘Black Pearl’
The world’s biggest sailing superyacht— Black Pearl —is also the most sustainable boat on water. Energy is saved at every turn on board the 350-foot yacht, from the HVAC system to three carbon-fiber masts, striking black DynaRig sails and aluminum superstructure that combine to make the Oceanco yacht lightweight and efficient. Controllable pitch propellers feed power back into the yacht via a pair of shaft generators providing enough power to support the yacht’s hotel load. Equipped with battery banks and a waste-heat recovery system, the gigayacht is capable of sailing across the Atlantic using only renewable energy.
Sunreef 80 Eco Marie-Joseph
Formula One champion Fernando Alonso so enjoyed his Greek charter aboard the Sunreef 80 Eco Marie-Joseph last summer that he now has a Sunreef 60 Eco in build. Equipped with electric engines, Marie-Joseph is fitted with nearly 1,800 square feet of solar panels integrated into the yacht’s composite structures, including the mast, boom, superstructure and hull sides. It’s enough to generate up to 45.5kWh, which leaves the deck areas free for guest enjoyment. In addition to the yacht’s “solar skin,” the vessel also has a hydro-generation system, which recovers energy from the propellers as well as high-efficiency batteries.
Steeler 61S Electric
Designed by Vripack and built by Steeler, the 61-foot Steeler 61S Electric is a full custom electric trawler built for a liveaboard owner. Sustainable materials, such as steel, wood, leather and Flexiteek decking, give a nod to the owner’s determination to have a lighter carbon footprint—though the biggest sustainability breakthrough lies with the boat’s propulsion and slow-boating efficiency. Though equipped to run a 75kW diesel generator, the Steeler 61S Electric is also equipped with a 90kW electric motor and can run on shore power. In true Dutch style, solar panels and windmills mounted on the roof help feed the 184kWh battery pack.
Newcastle Marine ‘Safira’
When it comes to sustainability, every little bit helps. Powered by azipod drives, which provide 20 percent more efficiency than conventional shafts, the 129-foot Safira can also run on 15-percent biodiesel. The boat is fitted with LED lighting and good insulation, which allows for smaller generators and reduced fuel consumption. Environmental considerations extend to the choice of materials as well, with reclaimed oak, remnant stone and Esthec—a synthetic replacement for teak—being used for both cabinetry and exterior decks.
Rossinavi ‘No Stress’
Italian designer Enrico Gobbi’s latest project comes in the form of Rossinavi’s first hybrid yacht. Delivered earlier this month, the 169-foot, full-aluminum sports yacht, No Stress , is powered by two MTU 16V diesel engines and two electric motors. In electric mode, the dual power system is managed by an artificial intelligence (AI) system that monitors fuel consumption. No Stress forms part of the Italian shipyard’s aim to develop boats with BluE technology. In addition to more environmentally-friendly cruising, the inclusion of AI means the owners “can enjoy the electric experience on board to the fullest,” said Rossinavi’s COO Federico Rossi, in a statement.
The Italian yard recently launched another hybrid-electric “BluE” concept called Infinity , a sailing yacht with an exterior by Fulvio de Simoni. The 138-footer has solar panels that can be stored so that yacht can navigate in full-electric mode for 90 percent of an average day. De Simoni also penned Rossinavi’s Sea Cat hybrid cat, which is currently under construction.

Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest’s Yacht ‘PANGAEA’ Spotted In Sydney Harbour
A superyacht owned by Aussie mining magnate and philanthropist, Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest, has been spotted at anchor in Sydney Harbour this week.
The second-richest person in Australia, according to last week’s AFR Rich List (with a net worth of AU$23 billion), owns and operates the 58.2-metre (191ft) explorer yacht ‘PANGAEA’, which is titled after the supercontinent that included all the landmasses before the Triassic separation circa 230 million years ago.
With a beam just short of 11-metres, the yacht can host 12 guests across six suites spread over four decks, with living areas throughout the vessel that resemble a private member’s club.
Each suite is named after a different continent, and some feature walk-in closets and well-appointed ensuites with marbled baths and old-world cabinetry.
PANGAEA is a go-anywhere, do-anything class of explorer yacht with a mighty steel hull and twin 1000-horsepower Caterpillar diesel engines that can take the vessel to a cruising speed of 11 knots and cover a range of 12,000Nm.
Check out the yacht in all its glory below (or keep an eye out for it yourself around the Mosman area of Sydney Harbour), then read up on the top 10 placeholders on the AFR Rich List for 2020 .

The Yacht, or Sailboat, is an abandoned boat that can be found in a bay on the southwestern coast of the Peninsula . It contains a fair number of supplies, but it can be dangerous to access without a boat due to sharks that may dwell in the waters around it.
- 2 Known Background
- 3 Theoretical Background
- 4 Tactics/Usefulness
- 7 Update History
Known Background [ ]
It is suggested that the yacht group came to the island purposefully sometime in 1984 (via the Yacht magazine's date ), in order to use the resurrection obelisk or to rescue the group's children from said obelisk (see suggested theories below). Multiple obelisk drawings can be found scattered around the yacht table. A milk carton can also be found depicting a missing child, Zachary, similar to the missing siblings . Nearby in the yacht, a photo depicting a Virginia can be found.
Unfortunately, something went terribly wrong for the yacht owners. No live persons from the group can be found, though the Red Man may be seen wandering the yacht the first time the player approaches it in any save file. Blood, gore, and a severed head inside the boat suggest the owners may have met a violent end.
A few bodies that may to belong to the yacht group can be found in various locations:
- Cave 2 , behind a wooden wall with the Practical Caver
- Beachside Grave
- On the Yacht itself
This last one, found on the bed, could be the owner of the yacht. It looks like the person was possibly committing suicide because of the "calm" position it is lying in.
Theoretical Background [ ]
Theory 1) Sahara was taking children to their lab , and the yacht group (comprised of the Missing Siblings' parents and Zachary's parents) came to the peninsula to rescue their children. They were not prepared for the mutants and cannibals, and the group was therefore overrun. One became trapped in Cave 2 and built a wall to keep the cannibals out, and summarily starved to death. One died (probably via cannibal or perhaps shark) and was buried on shore. One died (probably via cannibal or perhaps snow/exposure) and was buried in the mountain area. The last parent committed suicide on board upon realizing the hopelessness of their venture.
Theory 2) A father/mother had their child be kidnapped and killed, and somehow found out about the peninsula's resurrection obelisk. They decided to come to the island with friends/family to resurrect their child, but found the challenges of the mutants and cannibals (and possibly still existing Sahara) too great. The child was buried on shore, and the parent killed themselves aboard, with other inhabitants having their bodies scattered across the Peninsula (in Cave 2, the beach grave, and the mountainside grave). The Red Man appears on the yacht because he mirrors this story, except he decides to not give up, and thrives against the cannibal challenge.
Theory 3) The film camp inhabitants are the same people as the yacht inhabitants. The Charles script is dated to the same year as the Yacht magazine , which is possibly coincidence, but more likely not. The bodies at the film camp are much too fresh to be from 1984 (with flies still buzzing about), even as the weathered-ness of the tents suggests that the campsite has been there for many years, as compared to the other modern tents that can be found throughout the peninsula. The Yacht has four known bodies, and the film camp has 5 tents, suggesting the one other unlucky person was dragged away by the cannibals.
Due to the use of the keycard two to open a door onboard the yacht and the artifact inside the locked room the above theories are generally disproven.
Tactics/Usefulness [ ]
This is a fairly common area to start a base , though it is one of the most dangerous (see enemies below). The suitcases and yacht along with the ample number of booze bottles on the beach nearby provide a nearly limitless amount of Molotov cocktails. When you dive on cliff-y ground with corals, you can find oysters . The waters nearby have fish to catch with a spear . The player is unable to build on the deck of the yacht, but can build in the interior of the yacht. However, not all structures will be usable after being built (for example, water collectors and drying racks appear to function normally, but fire pits cannot be lit). This, coupled with the yacht's cramped interior space, severely limits the potential for base build-up on the yacht itself.
Enemies [ ]
Patrols of cannibals frequent the area often, especially if this was a crash location. As such, building a base on the ground nearby will lead to frequent and repeated attacks, though a tiny base can be built on the island behind the yacht without fear of cannibal attack. Additionally, if the player is overwhelmed on the shore, they can simply swim to the yacht, where the cannibals cannot go, easily escaping.
Additionally, there are often sharks around the boat and in the bay, which can kill the player in two hits if the player is too close. As such, it is recommended to have a small raft for boating back and forth between the little island / yacht / beach, so as to avoid the sharks.

2022 Kia EV6 Paint Colors, Ranked
In a world of grayscale evs, choose to be yacht blue..
The Kia EV6 is one of several electric vehicles built on the E-GMP platform that will be powering plenty of EVs from Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis in the future — and from one of my very limited spins behind the wheel, the EV6 is going to be a good one. Slightly less good are the machine’s paint color choices, which could use a little bit of extra pep. Here’s how we rank those paint colors.
9. Interstellar Gray
Available Trims : Light (RWD), Wind (RWD), Wind, (e-AWD)
There is nothing otherworldly about this gray. It’s gray. Stop trying to make gray sound cool. You can’t, because it’s fucking gray .
8. Steel Gray
Available Trims : Wind (RWD), Wind, (e-AWD)
Again: Stop trying to make gray sound cool. Kia earns minor brownie points for Steel Gray because its name more adequately describes the shade of this particular EV6, even though it is not exactly an inspired color.
7. Aurora Black Pearl
Available Trims : Wind (RWD), Wind, (e-AWD), GT-Line (RWD), GT-Line (e-AWD)
It helps me sleep at night to imagine all drivers of black cars are imagining themselves driving a Batmobile.
Glacier is the first of two white shades for the EV6, and while I wanted to like Glacier better than its counterpart, I simply do not. Its gray undertone makes it look preemptively dirty, which I guess is fine for people who never want to wash their cars.
5. Snow White Pearl
Available Trims : All
Another white but a little less creamy, Snow White Pearl is a nice, bright shade for those of you who really like your whites white . It’s fine.
4. Steel Matte Gray
Available Trims : GT-Line (RWD), GT-Line (e-AWD)
Steel Matte Gray earns a pass on my normal “gray is boring” dictum because matte paint is inherently cool. It emits a casual coolness that’s kind of a little intimidating, and it also kind of makes my stomach hurt because I hate the sound of nails against unburnished metal. But as a paint scheme on a car? Impeccable.
3. Gravity Blue
Available Trims : Light (AWD), Wind (RWD), Wind, (e-AWD)
Of the two blue shades offered by Kia, I argue that Gravity Blue is the lesser blue. It’s like the EV6 designers looked at the color palette for the car and said, “We could use one more color, but we should probably stay away from yet another gray or black” and came up with this instead. There is at least a hue to it, but it’s not the EV6's most exciting color.
2. Runway Red
As a longtime owner of several red cars, I am a noted red car enthusiast. You can give me the largest heap of shit on wheels, but if you paint it red, I will immediately decide that it has redeemable qualities. The Kia EV6's Runway Red shares a name with my favorite color of long-since-discontinued nail polish and is the same shade as my favorite long-since-discontinued matte lipstick. It’s a good color.
1. Yacht Blue
If I was a blue, Yacht Blue is the kind of blue I would want to be. It’s a very cool shade, but somehow it has a voluptuousness to it that makes it feel very comforting. Yacht Blue looks like how I imagine the ocean feels to people who like the ocean: vast, wide, and comforting. For me, the ocean is a terrifying place filled with terrifying creatures. So I think I’ll stick with my Yacht Blue.

A Guide to the Most Beautiful Green Spaces in Moscow
Home to more parks than any other city in Russia , Moscow offers a cornucopia of choice when it comes to green spaces. From innovative wild urbanism to 18th-century royal estates, here are the best places to escape from the city buzz in Russia’s capital.
Spread over a territory of almost 300 acres, Gorky Park is Moscow’s most popular green space. Opened in 1928, it was designed as ‘a city inside a city’ with its own telegraph, police unit and a doctor’s office. Some 90 years later, Gorky Park offers everything from segway rides to an open-air movie theatre, through to illuminating lectures and fantastic dining spots.

As the name implies, Muzeon is perfect for art lovers. The park plays host to art fairs, exhibitions, music festivals and video performances. But even if you don’t care for art, Muzeon has a lot to offer: from an elegant boardwalk to hip coffee shops to an in-ground fountain, where you can actually cool off in summer.

Why Moscow is the greenest city in the world
A house at Nezhinskaya street, Moscow
According to WorldAtlas, 54 percent of Moscow’s territory is covered by public parks and gardens, making it the greenest city in the world .
There are 20 square meters of trees and shrubs per inhabitant in Moscow – many times more than in Tokyo, London or Beijing. This happened because of the combination of two factors: first, Moscow was initially built amongst the forests of the North-Eastern Russia, second, landscaping and greening started in Moscow as early as the 18th century.
Fortress on a forest hill
Apollinaryi Vasnetsov. The Trubnaya Square in Moscow in the 17th century.
Borovitsky hill, upon which the Moscow Kremlin stands, is named after the word ‘bor’ – ‘forest’ in Russian. And indeed, in the 11th century there was an oak grove here, where the central streets of Moscow are now. Another example is the Church of St. John the Evangelist under the Elm Tree, now on Novaya Square, not far away from the Kremlin. Historian of Moscow Pyotr Sytin believed this church had its name in honor of the dense forest that protected the eastern part of the Kremlin until the 15th century.
Church of St. John the Evangelist under the Elm Tree
In these places, spruce and pine trees predominated, which were actively cut down and used by the city's population for construction. The city was expanding, and the forest was being cut down at its outskirts for building new houses. But these ‘outskirts’ were so close to the Kremlin that it’s now the very center of the city – even in the 17th century, places like Trubnaya Square (a 20 minute walk from the Kremlin) were still largely green, and until the early 19th century, bushes and trees grew right beside the Kremlin wall, in the now obsolete Aloisios’ Ravine, constructed in the 16th century under the supervision of Italian architect Aloisio the New. However, the city’s greenery wasn’t organized in a systematic way.
The Boulevard Ring
Tverskoy Boulevard in Moscow, early 19th century
Catherine the Great, who wanted to update the old capital, ordered the construction of the Boulevard Ring. It took the place of the obsolete Belyi Gorod (‘White City’) fortification wall.
“Moscow is encircled by boulevards – they are not only an ornament, but also an important benefit,” Vladimir Odoevsky, a 19th century Russian journalist, wrote. “When foreigners, looking at the plan of Moscow, see this green ring, we are proud to explain to them that in winter and summer, both sick and healthy, and the elderly, and children can walk around the city, walk between the trees and not be afraid of being hit by a carriage.”
The Kremlin ravine, the 1800s
After the fire of 1812, another green ring appeared – the Sadovoye (‘Garden’) ring, a wide street encircling the fast-growing center and covered in private houses’ gardens.
Greened by the Reds
Sokolniki Park, Moscow
Rapid urbanization starting after the 1917 revolution brought swarms of new inhabitants to Moscow, and the old city had to adjust to the needs of the industrial state. Unfortunately, with the 1930s Stalinist plan of Moscow reconstruction, many historical buildings were demolished, and main streets turned into highways.
Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya, Garden Ring, Moscow, 1928
In the 1930s, the Garden Ring was paved, trees at many squares and streets were cut down, there even were plans to destroy the Boulevard Ring, but fortunately they were not carried out. Georgy Popov (1906-1968), a Moscow Communist Party official, remembered that after WWII, in 1947, Stalin personally supervised the plans for re-greening the city center: “I remember how quickly we were deployed. We planted greenery on Dzerzhinsky Square (now Lubyanka Square), and in Okhotny Ryad, restored the garden on Sverdlov Square (now – Teatralnaya Square), and planted on Bolotnaya Square. Gorky Street was preplanted from Manezhnaya Square to Belorussky railway station. This was the first step in the greening of the central part of the city,” Popov wrote.
Sadovaya-Kudrinskaya, Garden Ring, Moscow, 1936
In 1951, the Moscow government chose from as many as 272 projects for re-greening Moscow. By 1961, forestry workers had planted over 500,000 trees and shrubs in the city. Small-leaved linden, blue spruce, fir, western thuja, irga, golden currant, barberry, and roses.
Gorky Park, Moscow, 1979
The 1950s-1960s also saw the reconstruction of Moscow’s biggest public parks. Gorky Park, transformed in the 1930s from Neskuchny (‘Merry’’) Garden, a 19th century public leisure space, has seen over 2,000 trees and 25,000 shrubs planted annually. The total space of the park expanded to 2.2 sq km, and the total length of the park’s alleys reached 30 km.
In the 20th century, more big parks were organized in Moscow: Sokolniki (5.16 sq km), Izmailovsky (16 sq km), Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo (2.22 sq km), Bitsevski Park (22 sq km), and, most importantly, Losiny Ostrov National Park (116 sq km), the largest urban park in Europe.
Felling a tree, planting two
Japanese garden in Main Botanical Garden in Moscow
Currently, Moscow’s green affairs are under strict control from the city’s government. In 2010-2016, 432,000 trees and 3.5 million shrubs were planted, and since 2013, a government initiative called “A Million Trees” has been implemented, meant to plant vegetation inside the inner yards of apartment buildings, with the plants being chosen on a digital app platform by locals.
Cutting down a tree in Moscow (for example, during a house construction) is very difficult, and if you still have to resort to such a measure, then the developer is obliged to compensate for this by planting two trees. However, these rules do not yet apply to other Russian regions, even in close proximity to the city – for example, the Moscow Oblast’. In 2007-2012 in Khimki, a suburb in Moscow Oblast’, a part of forest containing ancient oaks was being cut down for a road construction project. The project was eventually implemented, and a section of toll road was organized, causing air pollution near the highway, and in addition, noise pollution in the forest.
According to Moscow government’s official portal , by the end of the year, over 5,000 trees and 136,000 shrubs will be planted in Moscow, so the city is not going to lose its status as the greenest capital of the world any time soon. However, the indexes of the air pollution in Moscow are still unfortunately high – the city is still Russia’s largest trade and industrial center. The World Air Quality index places Moscow in 27th place in the air pollution ranking.
