Maxi 1200 boat test

Pip Hare

  • July 3, 2015

Swedish style from a Polish yard – this innovative new Maxi is designed by Pelle Petterson, and has some interesting new ideas for ease of handling and control, finds Pip Hare

maxi yacht 1200

Product Overview

Manufacturer:, comfort on display.

Allowing Tony Castro to work on the interior has indeed brought a whole new feel to this Maxi, moving away from the more traditional, darker, rather stodgy interiors to a re-energised and lighter space with comfort visibly on display.

10

Surprisingly, the feature that really blew me away was the heads, which is both generous in size and has a quality finish that is a far cry from shoehorning a plastic toilet into the minimum space possible. At first glance this cabin does not look as if it belongs in a boat; the wash basin is a full-size modern ceramic style and the shower, with wooden slatted seat dropped down over the heads, looks more like a sauna.

The L-shaped galley is neat and compact. It has two fridges – a top loader and a drawer fridge – as standard, a double sink and electric absorber that pops out from above the cooker. This is like an extractor fan, but does not vent to the outside, simply absorbs grease and odours through filters contained inside.

The whole area has room to work and to brace while at sea, though my feeling was there is not quite enough room for stowage. I wonder if I would end up using one of the fridges as a general stowage area if I was making a longer passage.

6

Both sleeping cabins were generous and light, with lockers and drawers fitted to the shape of the hull to maximise space. There were 12V sockets beside the berths for charging phones, and light switches that can be operated from the door or in bed.

The saloon is roomy and light, there is plenty of headroom and the starboard settee converts into quite a sturdy double berth without too much trouble. There are thoughtful little space-saving details everywhere, such as a wineglass rack in the centre of the table and a hinged seat back, which can create either a chart table pod or an L-shaped sofa. The whole of the interior feels as solid and high-quality as it looks, and under sail it was comfortable and secure below.

As is often the case where a designer has chosen to use the full beam of the boat to create space in the saloon, there is very little stowage behind seat backs. With space under the settees taken up with tanks, there seems to be a general lack of stowage.

_MG_0237

The chart table was big enough, but not enormous and very comfortable to brace in while sailing. The main electrics panel contained a really nice touchscreen battery and tank monitor, which displayed a multitude of information in one small location. The test boat did not have a chartplotter mounted in this space, but there would be room to put one in.

Under power

The standard engine for the Maxi 1200 is a 28hp Volvo with a saildrive and two-bladed folding propeller. Our test boat had a 40hp with a Gori prop and the retractable bow thruster that comes as standard with every boat. Needless to say, under power it went whichever way you wanted it to go, but then just about any modern 40ft boat would with that much horsepower and a bow thruster.

The engine was quiet and the installation had good access for maintenance; the engine battery was also accessible. The bow thruster is neatly installed under the forward berth, though I struggle to understand why a 40ft boat that weighs only 6.9 tonnes should need one as standard.

All controls to hand for the helmsman

All controls to hand for the helmsman

There are a lot of electrics on this boat, with the mainsheet winch, powered primary winches, two fridges, cooker hoods, bow thrusters and options for much more. All the batteries supplied with the boat are AGM, there is 330ah available for the house and separate batteries for bow thruster and engine. However, this could be a very power-hungry boat – fine if you are tied up to the dock every night, but on a longer passage at sea or hopping between quiet anchorages it might be worth investing in some alternative charging methods.

The might of the Delphia shipyard and its in-house manufacturing has allowed it to produce this boat for an impressive price. The standard boat package comes in at €178,000 (£127,000) and is incredibly comprehensive with a long list of goodies included. Delphia is offering an introductory package for the first ten boats at €190,000 (£135,600) to include heating, autopilot, chartplotter and windlass, among other things. If you were to throw in a furling gennaker, the whole lot would come in at just under €200,000 (£142,800).

What really struck me about the team from Delphia is that it already has a successful and enormous factory in Poland, but in acquiring the Maxi brand it set out to build a boat that would cater for an entirely different customer and has certainly not been half-hearted about it.

The goal with this boat was to tap into the Scandinavian-type cruising market and, to my mind, the Maxi 1200 has exceeded the objective. She has style and quality wrapped up into a Swedish space-saving package.

Maxi 1200: Love at First Sight

  • February 11th, 2017
  • Sailing Yacht

There it goes the saying: “It´s the boat that finds it´s owner, not the other way round.” Al lot of sailors I was talking to were reciting this saying as an answer to the question why they´ve bought their respective yachts. “I felt it in my belly …” or “it was just it!” are among these answers too. Same with me: The King´s Cruiser 33 was the third boat I inspected and from the first moment I saw her it was clear that she was the one. During Dusseldorf Boatshow I had full 10 days time of roaming all kinds of sailing yacht. But it was this one I instantly fell in love with: The Maxi 1200.

maxi yacht 1200

Maxi Yachts has a long standing tradition of making fast Scandinavian-style sailing yachts. Maxi now belongs to the Polish Delphia Group and is alive and kicking. A few boats in the line, but that doesn´t matter because this one yacht alone really touched my heart. Maxi Yachts, this name is inseparably connected with another huge name in naval architecture: Pelle Petterson. Yeah, it´s the very same Pelle who did the design of my King´s Cruiser 33 some 45 years ago!

This. Is. It: The perfect Cockpit Layout

At first I was just a bit curious what a modern Pelle-design would be looking like in present time. After all there is nearly half a century of experiences, changes in design aspects, the Fastnet 1979-turning point and new technologies between my King´s Cruiser and this Maxi 1200. In a way, this 12 meter long boat is the perfect demonstration material in this respect because we have the same designer and almost the same size of boats. As I said, at first, I was just curious. After I visited the boat for a couple of times and finally left the stand, I was completely in love with that boat. It really touched something inside of me.

maxi yacht 1200

Among a lot of other things, it was the Maxi 1200 where I really did understand what a “good cockpit layout” really means! No joke: Upon seeing the configuration and positioning myself behind the steering wheel I did have a flash of wit and suddenly understood what people mean when they are talking of “good” or “bad” cockpit layouts. Because in my eyes, the Maxi 1200 just has a perfect layout and cockpit configuration. First of all, the cockpit is both open and roomy but at the same time encapsuled with high coamings which makes it safe, especially when sailing with children . I was smiling because it reminded me of the Kings Cruiser´s cockpit as well.

maxi yacht 1200

Secondly, everything is within range of the helmsman here. Standing behind the twin wheels you can on the one hand have a great sight over the whole boat as well as everything under control. Except for the secondary roping like reefing lines and halyards and stuff, all ropes are within reach from the helmsman. This makes the Maxi 1200 an ideal yacht for single-handed sailing. What I like most is the clever positioning of the mainsheet winch.

maxi yacht 1200

This mainsheet winch has been placed by Pelle on top of the foldable cockpit table after a small block will divert the mainsheet here. Railguards will provide for safe working conditions whilst turning the cranks. In fact, it takes a step or two from the wheel to reach the mainsheet winch and be able to trim the main sail properly. The only fly in the ointment: No mainsheet traveller configuration for fine trimming the main is available here.

maxi yacht 1200

Another ingenious move is the positioning of the Genoa winches and the roping here. Right before the wheels, lines will be diverted to either side of the boat, running through a 4-slot jammer block and into a rope locker. Smooth and tidy cockpit whilst underway. Again, just a step or two to trim the jib or do the tack all alone. I had to return to this yacht three or four times, always spending minutes sitting here and there and in my mind doing all the maneuvers. This cockpit just is it. Period.

maxi yacht 1200

What I like most is the fact that by configurating the layout in this manner, Pelle achieved another remarkable point here: No lines whatsoever will be running around in the passenger´s area of the cockpit . The seats will be free of roping. No sitting of halyards anymore, no tripping hazard and no hassle in case of a sudden tack. With the Maxi 1200 configuration for the first time ever I found a yacht which I would put myself past doing a singlehanded trip with. This is a perfect cockpit layout in my eyes (except for the missing mainsheet traveller).

Maxi 1200 – a Dream Yacht fur sure

So, what else is there on the Maxi 1200? First, let´s walk around the hull. It´s a Scandinavian yacht, unmistakably. Sleek, fast hull from all angles. The Maxi 1200 has a hull length of 11.56 meters and a max beam of 3.75 m. That´s even more slender than my King´s Cruiser with a length of 10.24 meters and a max beam of 3.40. The deep T-bulb keel gives a max draft of 2.32 meters and the overall weight of the boat of just 7.300 kilograms of which some 2.500 kilograms is ballast makes it a truly racy performance-oriented configuration. This boat is going to be the hell of a fun!

maxi yacht 1200

Her lines are those of a performance cruiser, underlined by a deep T-shaped keel with a large lead bulb. I guess it not only looks fast but will perform beautifully: Maxi yachts are known performers and this Maxi 1200 will be no exception. The single rudder configuration, on the other hand do stand out particularly just as if Pelle would like to tell us that this boat is one of the classy ones – no twin rudder needed.

maxi yacht 1200

Taking a look at her stern and the transom, fine chines do stand out in stark contrast, just like the whole yachts seems like some kind of a bridge between the good old times of yachting and the modern way of making fast performance hulls. Just as the rest of the boat, especially the beautiful Teak decking, the whole yacht appears to be made with care and love for detail.

Interior Design of the Maxi 1200: Grandfather´s Genes

You know the story why I´ve finally bought the King´s Cruiser 33 ? It was my wife, upon entering the saloon, who took a look around, sat down on one of the settees, taking a deep breath like a gasp of relief, saying: “This is finally it!”. She is cozy, hospitable and embracing. Pelle Petterson has had a deep sense for both practical solutions and an eye for details. I was excited to see what a present-day Petterson yacht would look like inside.

maxi yacht 1200

Ah, look at this entryway! Here we have it again: A bridge between classy and modern design. I just simply love these folding doors, massive wood with those nice ventilation details. As I will have to refurbish my own entrance situation as well, I will take this as a role model and try to copy the style. Simply love it. Now, come on down below …

maxi yacht 1200

What a surprise! The saloon has almost the same measurements and configuration as the one in my KK33. Starboard side the main seating situation with a large L-settee, vis-à-vis a 3-seater. All of them situated around a large folding table which is built around the keel-stepped mast. I appreciate that Pelle Petterson apparently moved away from green cushion …

maxi yacht 1200

Ah, and look at this wooden bulkhead. It instantly reminded me of my SY OLIVIA. Lots of wooden surfaces in noble veneers. Combines with white roofing- and hull-panels and the modern fabric used for the cushion the whole saloon creates a both cozy yet welcoming and modern atmosphere. Of course there are new things incorporated too: A large head is situated at right the hand side next to the entryway and as a concession to modern times, no proper nav-station.

maxi yacht 1200

Which is a bit of a downer since I absolutely love the nav-station of my King´s Cruiser 33 and have nothing but a general disapproval for those smallish mini nav-stations in modern yachts. Even with old warhorse Pelle Petterson it appears that the good old times have finally come to an end in this respect. At least a small chart table with a (large!) switch- and gauge-panel has been installed here.

maxi yacht 1200

I absolutely love the details on the large folding dining table! Look at this craftsmanship! The details around the stepped mast are very nice. It´s both massive handcrafted quality combined with a simple yet functional construction. No bling-bling but a practical solution. I simply love it. The grandchild of the folding table in my own boat.

maxi yacht 1200

Another light bulb moment in the fore cabin : Here Pelle Petterson sticks to the old and proven concept of the large berths, no island beds or modern stuff, but a large reclining area. What made me smile was the stowage underneath the front end of the bed, which seems originally taken from my old boat as well. Nice.

maxi yacht 1200

What´s new of course are the large aft cabins. After IOR-rule was abandoned finally the rear ends of the yachts have grown considerably in size. Also a pleasant side effect of the chines, there´s plenty of space in the hulls now to accommodate large aft cabins. Something I can only dream of (when I am laying down to get a rest in my snug narrow quarter berth . The aft cabins of the Maxi 1200 are well-sized and can also be turned to single-berth cabins or stowage.

Why Pelle Petterson still kicks ass

All in all it was a defining moment for me to visit the Maxi 1200. First of all I finally understood what a good cockpit layout really means. All lines and winches for underway trimming of the sails are within an arm length of the helmsman, making the Maxi 1200 an ideal single-hand boat. Secondly I´ve had so many enlightening grasps of the boat´s interior and exterior looks which could easily and straight be drawn back to my 45 year old King´s Cruiser. It´s almost like a family reunion.

maxi yacht 1200

Craftsmanship, design and the whole outfitting of this yacht is excellent. It´s a shame that Maxi Yacht doesn´t get too many of their boats into the water as the unit numbers produced by Delphia in Poland are low. Nevertheless, I think a dedicated (family-) sailor who is seeking a safe, comfortable yet performing yacht will have made an excellent choice by going for Pelle Petterson´s Maxi 1200.

Baldour wins Bank of England Regatta

We are very proud to announce that Baldour  (Maxi 1200) won the Bank of England regatta in May. The Bank of England Sailing Club Crew won the Commodore’s Cup for the first boat home in the Pursuit Race, and also the Bank of England Bowl for winning the IRC Race series.

maxi yacht 1200

The two races on Saturday were in 20 knots of wind when Baldur achieved 12-13 knots with the kite up and 7-8 knots to windward. They also won the only IRC race on Sunday in very light airs only made possible in spring tides by the skilful timing and course selection by the Royal Ocean Racing Club races officers who organised the races.

If you’d like to help build Baldur’s race credentials, do get in touch – she’s already proved she’s got what it takes to win!

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

maxi yacht 1200

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

maxi yacht 1200

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

maxi yacht 1200

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

maxi yacht 1200

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

maxi yacht 1200

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

maxi yacht 1200

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The Maxi 1200 stays true to its quality Scandinavian heritage, with input from Olympian Pelle Petterson

  • Belinda Bird
  • March 30, 2015

This is the second model under the ownership of Polish company Delphia Yachts and is fast, comfortable and elegant

maxi yacht 1200

A return to the Maxi Yachts of old with this fast and comfortable cruiser

Maxi has produced over 16,000 yachts but, as with many Scandinavian yards, the high cost of hand-made quality has led to tricky times over the past decade. The Polish company Delphia Yachts now owns Maxi, after it had a brief stewardship under Najad. The intention is to stay true to its quality heritage and Swedish Olympic sailor Pelle Petterson remains involved in the design.

The Maxi 1200 is the second model under Delphia’s ownership, following the 1300 a year ago, and resembles the Maxi yachts we remember, a design that melds the worlds of racer-cruiser and family cruiser.

She promises to be simple, fast and ergonomic, as well as safe, durable and, thanks to her Polish production, affordable. “The Maxi 1200 is meant to be very fast and very comfortable, pretty elegant and easy to handle,” says Petterson.

Attention is paid to strength and stiffness, with carbon reinforcements used around the grid that takes keel, rig and chainplate loads, plus the rudder frame and the stem and bowsprit. Hull and deck have a PVC core and are laminated in vinylester resin.

An aim of Petterson’s was to keep the cockpit tidy, so there is halyard stowage in the coamings and sheet tail stowage below the cockpit table. I like the siting of the primaries inboard and the use of a central mainsheet pedestal with a single reversible winch. “I assure you that this [mainsheet] solution works really well,” says Petterson, “I’ve checked it on my own boat.”

Tony Castro created a simple, elegant interior design, finished with white panels contrasting with teak trim and solid wood frames. It is the first time anyone other than Petterson has designed a Maxi interior, and it is offered with a two or three-cabin layout.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
