20 Budget-Friendly DIY Boat Plans for Loads of Water Fun

diy motorboat

Do you enjoy spending a day out on the water every now and again? But does your budget allow you to purchase a new boat?

Well, even if you’re working on a meager budget, you could still own a boat. “How?” you might ask.

Rather simply in fact… make your own. I probably wouldn’t have thought of this idea either until a few months ago when my husband developed the itch for a boat.

He traded for a boat with a title, but it didn’t run. We’ve spent quite a few dollars and hours into making it work, and now we have a decent boat to enjoy on the water.

If you aren’t into fixing something up, I’m going to bring you some of the internet’s best ideas for making your own DIY boat. Here they are:

diy motorboat

1. The DIY Tiny House Boat

diy motorboat

We’re going to jump right in with a doozy to choose from. If you’re in the market for not only a boat but a houseboat, you may be wondering if this could ever fit in your budget.

Well, when you see this wood framed pontoon tiny houseboat , you’ll soon learn it can become a reality for you with a little hard work.

2. Basic Wooden Boat

diy motorboat

Whether you need a small fishing boat or a smaller boat to paddle around a pond, these plans are great for either.

The plans for this boat walk you through each step of the process. If you’re a beginner in the world of carpentry, this boat could still be feasible for you.

3. PVC DIY Kayak

PVC DIY Kayak

I wasn’t aware of how expensive kayaks could be until our oldest recently caught the urge to purchase one. Suddenly, I realized how much money a person could invest in one.

However, this kayak appears to be quite buoyant and should be quite a bit cheaper because it’s constructed from PVC pipes . How neat does it look?

4. Recumbent Pontoon Pedal Boat

diy motorboat

Do you enjoy renting a paddle boat and heading out on the water? Then you’ll love this boat. It’s a DIY version of a paddle boat.

However, it has large floats on the side which makes it a smaller version of a pontoon boat . Also, it’s made to recline for a more relaxing ride.

5. Plywood Canoe

diy motorboat

Canoes are a fun way to go up and down a river or other smaller bodies of water. If you’d like to have one, consider building it.

You can use these plans which show you how to construct a canoe out of plywood. This should make it more affordable yet functional too.

6. DIY Pontoon Boat

diy motorboat

Pontoon boats are amazing boats to own. They’re great for fishing and luxurious enough to be a comforting way to cruise the water on a gorgeous day.

If you’d like to own one but can’t afford to buy, consider using these tips to help you build a pontoon boat all on your own.

7. Flat Bottom Boat Plans

diy motorboat

One thing I’ve learned over the past few months of renovating a boat, is you don’t need anything fancy for a fishing boat – unless you want it to be fancy.

However, if you’re in the market for something simple and functional, the plans for this flat-bottomed boat should do it.

8. PVC Johnboat

diy motorboat

A Johnboat is a great way to get out on the water and have lots of fun. They’re also functional enough to make a nice fishing boat too.

Either way, if you’re in the market for a fishing boat, consider building your own johnboat with these plans.

9. DIY Simple Wooden Boat

diy motorboat

This option doesn’t come with plans which I could find. However, it could still be used as inspiration for building your boat.

Again, these boats would be good options if you’re someone looking for an inexpensive way to go fishing.

10. Homemade PVC Raft

diy motorboat

This PVC raft is another option which doesn’t come with plans, but it looks simple enough to build. If you have experience in carpentry, you should be able to figure it out rather quickly.

However, this looks like a fun way to get the whole family out on the water uniquely and cost-effectively.

11. The DIY Pontoon Double Hulled Kayak

diy motorboat

This pontoon boat is built in an abnormal but intriguing way. Instead of having typical floaters on the bottom of the boat, they used kayaks.

From there, the rest of the boat was built of foam insulation and PVC pipe. When you get creative, you can build a boat with little expense.

12. The Fishing Punt

diy motorboat

This is another cost-effective option for a fishing boat. However, there’s no guesswork on this one. The plans are laid out and easy to read.

Whether you’re an experienced carpenter or someone who has recently begun to build things, this could be a viable option for you.

13. Inflatable Raft Fishing Boat

diy motorboat

Are you struggling to come up with enough room in your budget to build a new fishing boat? What if you could use your inflatable raft as a boat?

Well, thanks to this idea, you can. The person who created this put a plywood bottom in a raft and turned it into an amazing little fishing boat for little money.

14. Single Plywood Boat

diy motorboat

If you don’t need a larger boat, this could be the answer for you. It’s cost-effective because the whole thing is built from one sheet of plywood.

Even though this boat isn’t the biggest, it would make a great fishing boat for a one-person  fishing trip .

15. Zip Tie and Ply Mini Boat

If you’d like to get out on the water for a fun day of fishing or sight-seeing, consider building this unique mini-boat .

It’s made from zip ties and plywood. Though it may sound a little sketchy on the surface, it seems quite buoyant and inexpensive too.

16. The Homemade Pontoon

diy motorboat

When I saw this boat , I instantly sent it to my husband and said, “Can you build this? I may need it a little bigger to fit the kids and dog on board.” This should tell you; I love it!

But it actually is a cool idea. It looks comfortable for both cruising and fishing. Plus, it should be possible for most budgets.

17. PVC Pontoon Boat

Pontoon Boat

Some of you may be looking at these ideas and saying, “This is great, but I’d prefer to have a motor attached to my boat.”

Well, you’re in luck. This pontoon boat is easy to build and also shows you how to attach a motor to keep you from having to paddle everywhere you go.

18. The Micro Houseboat

diy motorboat

If you’ve ever searched for a houseboat, you know how expensive they can be. But don’t give up on your dream yet.

Instead, look into building this tiny houseboat . It has a gorgeous interior and would make a great full-time home or a small vacation home.

19. DIY River Raft

diy motorboat

Who says you have to build something overly complicated to enjoy a day out on the river? Well, you don’t.

Instead, build this simple raft . It’s constructed from PVC pipe and has a few seats add onto it. It looks buoyant and can help you to have many enjoyable days out on the water.

20. Seafoam Kayak

diy motorboat

Would you like a light-weight kayak you can build yourself? Consider creating this kayak made from sea foam.

It only weighs 16 pounds and is built to be eight feet long. This could be a great way to enjoy many days out on the water without much fuss.

Now you have 20 different options for a DIY boat. You can choose between kayaks, johnboats, houseboats, tiny homes, pontoons, and much more.

We hope you’ll find something on this list to inspire you and be able to create something you can enjoy all summer long.

DIY Plastic Speedboat For One

diy motorboat

Coroplast (short for corrugated plastic) is an interesting material. It has a structure similar to cardboard, but since it’s plastic it’s waterproof and can be used for a unique set of applications. It’s typically used for political yard signs, but there are more fun things to do with this lightweight material than advertise. [Paul Elkins], for example, uses it to make speedboats .

The boats that [Paul] builds make use of a piece of coroplast which he cuts and folds into a basic hull shape. From there he begins to assemble the other things needed to finalize the boat, including strengthening the shape with wood, adding a steering wheel, building a transom to mount the motor to, and placing controls in the cockpit such as throttle and steering. The entire build is enough to propel a single person on a body of water at about five knots, which is impressive.

To make one of these yourself you’ll need a small outboard motor, but all of the other details of the build are outlined clearly in his series of videos. If you want to build your own boat but don’t like the idea of a noisy two-stroke motor right behind you, you can also look into building a boat with a silent mode of propulsion .

And if you’ve got a good supply of Coro, definitely check out [Paul]’s other projects, including a tiny house.

So yeah… how does one get a “good supply of coro”? I wanted some for an art project a few months ago and had a lot of trouble finding any reasonably-priced supply of large-ish panels. (Though you can get little yard-sign-sized pieces from any art supply store.)

If you are in the US it is pretty common in home improvement stores. Home Depot has 4’x8′ sheets for under $25.

Not sure of your definition of ‘reasonably priced’, but I picked up some 4’ x 8’ sheets from a local sign shop. A little over $50 per IIRC. Not cardboard cheap by any means.

I found Foamex (blown polyurethane in a vinyl sandwich) to be cheaper and easier to get in large sheets with similar properties to Coroplast, though a little heavier.

Gotta get ’em online I’m afraid. Or used on ebay. The “used and pre-owned” category is your friend. I usually try not to buy anything new before checking that. Especially with tools; new tools are often worse than the old ones.

Needs plans and a link to find such a tiny outboard…

Unless that’s a trolling motor, in watch case this “speed”boat would max out at something like 5mph

Article mentions “five knots” so about 5.75 mph

I have one about that same size which I bought at a hamfest a couple years ago for $35. I spend another $30 or so on a carburetor rebuild kit, new points and a spark plug.

On my aluminum fishing boat (10ft I think) it tops out at only about 7MPH but that has to be much harder to push than this little chloroplast boat. I like my little motor because it is small enough to carry, has it’s own built in gas tank leaving me room in the boat for my legs and at such a small horsepower I can let my daughter run it legally.

I think I need to adjust the timing and maybe if I do I’ll get some more speed in my fishing boat. But this is so much lighter. I’d love to see what speed it would get up to in a small, lightweight boat like this!

The pitch of the prop limits the top speed more than the engine power.

This boat is shorter and will have a lower hull speed than your 10 footer. You are probably faster.

Isn’t this a planing hull (hull speed wouldn’t apply) rather than a displacement hull(hull speed does apply)? I guess they are all displacement hulls when they are underpowered/under propped.

This is not a chloroplast boat, it´s an amyloplast boat because it is white.

More boat-like than a potato though

You mean a Karenoplasty boat

Tanaka air cooled outboard (3HP max). Also sold as a Sears Gamefisher motor.

Why bother with a motor at all, just make it into a kayak.

You should check out his coroplast kayaks…

Wow, nice tiny boat, like half a kayak :) I would like to have one like that

It’s ideas like, I wonder if it’s light enough to make a glider… That will probably kill me one day.

Next up, hydrofoil.

Coroplast boats seem like a good idea on the surface but they age badly, particularly if left exposed to sunshine (one of the reasons you don’t see it used in buildings other than maybe hothouses for early planting – we’ve used it for boat storage and it goes to pieces in a season or two. There are companies that make folding kayaks of the stuff.

On the other hand, if you love to build and tinker with boat design, you’re now motivated to make the next generation on the cheap.

As far as the motor goes, I’d love to find if there are people tinkering with really workable electric outboards on the general idea of the commercial (and overly expensive)”Torqueedo” that’s popular for dinghies and the like.

https://www.torqeedo.com/us/en-us

Well, you could spray-paint it in something UV resistant

Why does this remind me of This is Spinal Tap and mistaking feet for inches? He finishes his boat, steps back and “Doh!”

If you’re looking for new and cheap ways to make an automatic drowning machine, look up expanded foam and “PMF” (Poor mans fiberglass) construction.

If you wanna bang one together out of wood, loads of vintage free plans at svensons.com

“automatic drowning machine” +1 Built/used many in my mis-spent youth, from the first, a found, leaky galvanized washtub paddled with a rotten 1x board (tippy – even though I was much smaller then…), discarded tires mounted on their rims and lashed together (unsinkable, un-paddlable, and un-dry. Then there was the massive Raft race raft floating on 12 55 gal drums that was so slow the Police politely “offered” to tow us the last 1/4 mile or so several hours and after dark (may have been adult beverages involved in that one). Last one was an 2 person punt made out of one sheet of 1/4″ plywood except for Bow and transom and some 3/4″ pine squares. Had that one a few years until a passenger just had to see if he could stand up in it (- he couldn’t), moment of silence for the Knot-a-Yot (1) that now rests at the bottom of a local bay…. Lessons Learned: 1) Not everything that floats is suitable for transportation on water. 2) Wear a damn life jacket!!!!!!

HackaDay covered the story of a “single sheet of plywood” boat/dingy years ago.

Found it (one?) here https://hackaday.com/tag/plywood-boat/ The plan for mine probably cane from one of the Popular Mechanics or Mechanics Illustrated in the attic when I was a kid in the 70’s. (I still want to build that 130 mph pulse-jet…similar items mentioned here on occasion)

I think this would make a great project to build with one of my nephews but using an electric trolling motor as a safer propulsion method. No need for speed, just a fun “I made it myself” kinda deal.

I used to collect 4×8 sheets of coroplast after campaigns were over. They just got left up for at least a month after, so I’d get in my truck and go do my civic duty and remove them. We built a lot of things out of coroplast then, which made sense when it was free! You can also build RC planes with coroplast, recumbent bicycle fairings, tents, whatever you want. Too bad it degrades in a couple of years, though.

I have had good luck getting small cutoffs from sign shops, too.

Coroplast (fluted plastic board) can be purchased from Sign Supply Wholesale suppliers like Montroy supply for around $18 per sheet in 1/4 inch. They carry true cut 4×8 with square cut sides (for a few dollars more) and just down and dirty 4×8 sheets with aok cut edges for $18. No need to be robbed by Home Depot.

The “silent mode of propulsion” link goes to a 2018 HaD post about a solar panel powered kayak. In the comments to that post the William Fraser created posted an update on April 14, 2020 at 6:07 am https://hackaday.com/2018/12/04/go-up-a-creek-without-a-paddle/#comment-6237175 which links to a video of his newer and improved version https://youtu.be/6u-j1gxQRGc

There was a Make mag article last year about a similar boat made out of wood. Since boats depreciate, this is a great way to enjoy lakes and rivers without major cost.

How do I get the plans for the boat thanks joe

Crispy 660 CABIN

Crispy 660 CABIN project rises from a client’s request to have a small planing boat with a cabin, a hull to be easy built in plywood and epoxy, a boat powered with an headache-free outboard engine; he will sail the boat as a small week-end cruiser in coastal areas, channels and lakes, taking advantage of the interiors, made by a full size double berth in the lower cabin (with a real marine toilet), a decent amount of space for lockers, stoves and a sink in the cabin ; basically all you need to cruise for a prolonged weekend with the protection of a small cabin, all cooked in a “nu classic” looking small planing boat.

Crispy 660 cabin is the cruising development of our open boat “Crispy” family: an average sized cruising motorboat with plenty of space to fish, sunbath , take a rest and explore the coastal areas or nearbies islands

Hull and structures are derived from Crispy 650 open boat , slightly modified to cope with the different weight of the superstructure, and with a new flared design of the hull topisdes ; the hull is thus made by a structural grid of marine plywood bulkheads linked by a T shaped solid wood keel beam and an array of longitudinal stringers running from bow to transom, this one made by a 58 mm thick sandwich of plywood and solid laminated wood bonded with epoxy; cockpit, deck and superstructure are made by bonded plywood panels, light, stiff and easy to build.

Topsides are made by two layers of 6 mm thick plywood (or solid wood if you prefer) veneers overlapped and bonded on the structure; the boat can be powered with a single or double outboard engine up to 160 HP (single engine) or 2 x 100 HP , giving her a top speed of approximately 31 knots ;

crispy 660 3d hull

Hull geometry with flared topsides is clearly shown here

Plans are as usual super-detailed with all the developed panels, a huge amount of structural details and several drawings specifically dedicated to systems : electrical, black water, fuel system, bilge system and freshwater system.

All in all Crispy 650 is good choice if you want a classical look coastal cruiser to be built and operated with a reasonable budget , avoiding bigger boats and too expensive powerplants , and she features a modern wooden-epoxy composite hull 15% lighter than a “normal” GRP boat of the same size.

In this kind of boats as usual deck and cockpit arrangement can be widely customized to suit your needs, ranging from pure coastal cruise, to a serious fisherman.

Crispy 660 CABIN DIY plywood epoxy fisherman int1

Here it is the interiors layout detailed in plans: a double v berth on the bow, a separate marine toilet, pilot steering position, a galley featuring a couch and sink and stove.  cockpit has two lateral seats: hatches on the floor are made in order to easily do maintenance works on systems (fuel tanks, batteries and other systems); two lateral seats can be built in the cockpit

How to build her: the hull is in marine oukume plywood and solid wood battens notched on plywood bulkheads, all glued with epoxy resin, chines are reinforced with glass tapes epoxy laminated. The construction will start setting up the plywood bulkheads on a cheap wood scaffold; we’ll proceed to link the bulkheads with stringers and keel backbone, gluing all together with thickened epoxy, thus making a sturdy and light structural grid. The planking will be made with plywood panels glued on the stringers and bulkheads; chines between panels will be stiffened with glass tapes both inside and outside, the same thing will be done among bulkheads and panels; deck and cockpit will follow the same scheme, plywood panels glued with epoxy on a grid of bulkhead and stringers. The hull will behave like a composite monocoque, light, strong and stiff. The boat can be customized with all the accessories that you need: fishing rod holders, additional seats, a retractable bimini on the cockpit, a diving equipment rack, and so on.

Electric motors power all kinds of things you probably use every day, like your fridge, washing machine, and even electric toothbrush. Building your own simple electric motor is actually really easy. To help you out, we've put together a step-by-step guide to making a basic electric motor that includes everything you'll need to get started.

Winding the Coil

Step 1 Tape together four pencils.

Connecting the Battery

Step 1 Secure the battery.

  • Be sure the needles are pointing with the sharp end down toward the battery and the eye at the top holding the coil.
  • Do not let either needle touch both sides of the battery.
  • Once both leads are connected, there will be an electric current running through the needles and the wire. It is best to use rubber or insulated gloves for this step.

Introducing the Magnet

Step 1 Bring a magnet close to the coil.

About This Article

wikiHow Staff

To begin building a simple electric motor, make a coil by wrapping insulated copper wire around something hard, like a few pencils. Then, use wire strippers to remove the insulation on each end of the wire. Lay a battery on its side and tape it to a flat surface, then slide each stripped end of wire through the eye of a needle and tape the needles to the positive and negative sides of the battery. Tape a magnet to the battery underneath the coil, spin the coil, and voila! To learn how to experiment with different magnets, read on! Did this summary help you? Yes No

9 Ways to Build Your Own Electric Motor

Want to know how to build your own electric motor? There are several ways to make one using various materials.

An electric motor can be found at the heart of many devices nowadays. As a result, you can build almost anything at home, from a motorized safe or an attic ladder, to a crawler for pipe cutting, as long as you have a motor to hand. But if not, then you can always make one. We have compiled nine methods for how to build your own electric motor.

1. Brushless DC Motor

A brushless DC motor is one of the best motor choices. It generally has a higher speed and torque than standard motors and experiences little to no power loss, making it perfect for DIY projects. Even better, brushless motors produce minimal noise, making them an excellent option for home automation projects. Check out how to build one in this Hackster guide and then view the YouTube demo for additional clarity on project instructions.

2. Simple Homopolar Electric Motor

A brushless motor is certainly a DIY project worth dedicating time to, but what if time is an issue? In that case, you can build a simple homopolar electric motor, as shown in this Instructables guide . It requires a small magnet, a single remote battery, and a wire. The DIY process is even more seamless as you only need to wrap the wire spirally around your battery and create contact points on each end to get it going. Check out the YouTube video above to better understand how it all works.

3. Aluminum Cans Electric Motor

Do you hate having to trash your soft soda cans but never know how to reuse them? We've found a solution for you: a can-based electric motor. It’ll eliminate your can-trashing problem and earn you a capable electric motor. And you don’t need tons of experience to build it; just use the YouTube video above for illustration, and you should be able to do it easily.

4. Basic Electric Motor With Wires and Paper Clips

Want another take on a simplified electric motor? This basic motor is an excellent fit. It uses the same principles as a fully built electric motor but has a much-simplified build featuring only wires, a box, and some paper clips. Start by making your box. You will need to cut out pairs of 7 by 4 inch, 1.8 x 6.8 inch, and 1.8 x 1.8 inch rectangular foam board pieces. Once these are ready, glue the four smaller ones to one of the larger pieces in an overlapping design at each corner, and then follow the rest of the Instructables tutorial to complete the setup.

5. PCB Motor

Need a motor you can carry around with you easily? Maybe it’s for a project you are expected to travel for, or a small gadget you are making. Whatever your intentions are, you just found an ideal one. The PCB motor made in this Hackaday tutorial is micro-sized for seamless use and portability. It weighs not more than 1.5 grams, has a 16mm diameter, and features a 3D printed 1.7mm rotor. Even more fascinating is that the stator (the fixed part) is printed on a four-layer PCB board .

The genius behind it created it for a small drone, so if you’re looking at a swarm project, it’ll fit perfectly. Are you interested in building your own drone? Check out these DIY drones similar to Ukraine’s Black Hornets .

6. DIY Electric Motor From E-Waste

The electronic waste crisis is getting bigger by the day, now representing 2% of the trash found in American landfills. While it may not sound like much, that small percentage equates to a whopping 70% of all toxic waste collected in the country. That’s why you should aim to use every opportunity to prevent one more electronic piece from making it to the trash can.

Build an e-waste-based DIY motor to help you put some of your e-waste to work. For this project, you will need a CNC machine, an old printer, four fluorescent lamp reactors, two bearings, a soldering station, three inducers, copper tape, and this Instructables tutorial .

7. Solar-Powered Electric Motor

Do you have no e-waste to reuse for a DIY project but still want to build one while remaining sustainable? Try making a solar-powered electric motor. It sounds technical and intimidating, but it’s pretty straightforward. Plus, this Instructables guide breaks the process down comprehensively. Additionally, it only requires a few components: a fidget spinner and a coil iron, three neodymium magnet discs, wires, two mini solar panels, and a reed switch.

8. Microwatt Pulse Motor

Ever visited an old-fashioned telephone exchange? The relays from one were used for the copper coils in this microwatt pulse motor, but you can use coils from any other device. Besides its efficiency in getting the job done, the best part about this microwatt pulse motor is that it can even be powered by a potato or salt water! You may also use a regular lithium battery and a solar cell if you lean towards sustainability, or an electrolytic capacitor in motor-generator mode.

All of these methods are based on using a reed switch, but it's also possible to build the motor with a two-transistor circuit instead. Either way, it’s an easy, fun project to try with your science-geek little ones or buddies. Check out how to build it in this Hackday project . You might also be interested in trying these challenging but awesome DIY projects to spark your kid’s creativity with your science-geek youngsters.

9. Electric Motor Made Using MDF and Speaker Magnet

Got a science project deadline quickly coming up but are stuck in the fog of creativity, so you still have no idea what to build? Whether it’s a work or school thing, stress less because an electric motor made using MDF is guaranteed to impress even the meanest of judges. Even better , it has quite a straightforward build, so you won’t be spending all your days on it either. Check out how to build it in the Instructables guide .

Build a DIY Electric Motor: Final Thoughts

Motors are fun to build. And they are highly practical too, meaning you can make quite a number and keep them in readiness for any project that might pop up on your radar. We researched and compiled a variety of ways to make an electric motor, so you can have one type for each possibility.

For instance, the homopolar electric motor may come in handy when you are outdoors and need a quick-build motor, while the microwatt pulse motor would be a pretty awesome alternative when you’re out of power. Have fun building or tweaking any of the nine electric motor projects above.
