How This Superyacht Became an Overnight Geopolitical Mystery

The Russia sanctions are growing, seemingly by the hundreds, every day. And much of the world is watching with glee as oligarchs’ luxuries are being hunted down by international governments. If we’ve learned anything from movies like The Wolf of Wall Street, which is based on a true story, it’s that some of the world’s wealthiest enjoy flaunting their money. Not only do billionaires often spend their money on toys like European sports cars and diamond-encrusted watches, but they also want the world to know to whom these extremely rare possessions belong. 

After all, Jeff Bezos has been accumulating quite a bit of press as he works on dismantling a historic bridge in Rotterdam to sail his $500 million yacht onto the open sea. But some billionaires play their cards a bit closer to the chest. Case in point: the owner of a 459-foot superyacht docked in a Tuscan port. No one, not even the Italian police, can identify who the enormous vessel belongs to, which leads the world to believe it may be someone tied to one of the world’s most currently despised leaders: Vladimir Putin.

Scheherazade , which costs an estimated $700 million, boasts not one but two helicopter decks. 

Few believe that the floating mansion actually belongs to the Russian president—whose recent invasion of Ukraine is earning more sanctions than he, his country, and his billionaire friends thought imaginable—but many are more certain that it belongs to someone with ties to the top of the Russian government.

Since the devastating fate of Ukraine started to unfold, the United States, along with the UK and the European Union, have come together to track down the luxuries belonging to Putin’s friends, who are part of a massively growing list of billionaires facing punishing sanctions. That’s why this boat, one of the world’s largest and costliest, is such a point of interest.

International governments have been going after the luxurious belongings of Russian oligarchs since Putin and his government started getting slapped with sanctions two weeks ago, so assuming the yacht hiding out in Italy is one of Putin’s friend’s, things aren’t looking so good. However, no one can confirm just yet. The ship’s British captain, Guy Bennett-Pearce, promised that Putin had never been on the boat and that it didn’t belong to him, but he didn’t confirm whether or not the yacht belonged to a Russian national.

Considering all of the amenities on the boat, dubbed Scheherazade , it’s not exactly an unfair guess to assume the owner is a Russian oligarch. Scheherazade , which costs an estimated $700 million, boasts not one but two helicopter decks, an indoor swimming pool with a retractable cover that transforms the pool into a dance floor, a fully equipped gym, and bathrooms complete with gold-plated fixtures. That’s a lot of sparkle even for the level of wealth associated with a purchase this big. However, the glamour isn’t the unusual part; the degree of intentional secrecy is.

The superyacht community does entertain a level of confidentiality—mostly for security purposes—but the Scheherazade is kept under so many wraps that it makes people believe something dubious must be going on when it comes to the owner’s identity. For instance, all of the contractors and crew members signed nondisclosure agreements, there’s a custom cover to hide the boat’s nameplate, and when Scheherazade arrived at the port, workers built a metal structure on the pier to keep passersby from seeing the yacht.

The 459-foot superyacht is currently docked in a Tuscan port.

This yacht, however, isn’t the only one catching people’s attention as of late. The world’s second-biggest yacht, called Eclipse , is owned by Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who owns the British soccer club, Chelsea. On Thursday, March 10, the UK government sanctioned Abramovich's assets.

As for Scheherazade , that mystery is still being investigated, and until the feds can figure out who the not-so-proud owner is, the behemoth on water will remain where it is, shrouded in a cloak of well-orchestrated secrecy.

The design of the exterior and interior was entrusted to the incredibly passionate experts at Joseph Dirand Architecture in Paris – with their precise imagination they created a true icon. It was a huge challenge for the shipyard to implement all technical necessities to be as invisible as possible in order to strictly follow the challenging aesthetic design intent.

“I wanted this boat to be timeless, elegant, pure, thine, classic, contemporary with a large amount of outdoor space to be immersive with the surround landscape. This is exactly what I see when I look at it today – the black hull is really spectacular and looks completely monolithic”, Joseph Dirand commented when he saw MY LIVA emerging from the shed for the first time. “I have been obsessed by this project during all those years and it is the opportunity of my life to design a boat like this. I am happy today that everyone is realizing why all those details were so important to get to this result. It is my turn to thank the shipyard for being such a great partner in the realization of this dream.”

The yacht employs a sophisticated diesel-electric propulsion system designed for exceptionally quiet operation during navigation and maneuvering. This innovative approach incorporates two 2200 kW electric propulsion motors, expertly manufactured by RAMME Electric Machines GmbH and supplied by SER Schiffselektronik Rostock GmbH. To ensure a steady supply of electrical power, the vessel is equipped with two 2240 kW Caterpillar main generators and three 599 kW Caterpillar auxiliary generators, supplied by Zeppelin Power Systems.

To further enhance its propulsion capabilities and onboard comfort, the yacht features an array of advanced components. Four VOITH thrusters lend their power to the yacht’s maneuverability. Four stabilizer fins from SKF play a pivotal role in comfortable experience for passengers and crew alike. This comprehensive blend of cutting-edge technology culminates in a propulsion and comfort system that ensures efficiency, silence, and seamless operation.

The project presented its fair share of challenges, and the most notable was the construction of a tender garage on the Lower Deck fitting a 16-meter day tender. The second tender garage on Main Deck forward accommodates not only three splendid boats, but also a Triton Submersible for up to seven guests and a variety of water toys, bicycles and dive equipment enhancing the yacht’s recreational offerings.

The exterior design, thoughtfully crafted to maintain the vessel’s elegant black silhouette, boasts a unique approach. Instead of traditional anchor pockets, the yacht incorporates underwater anchors on the keel. This ingenious design not only adds to the vessel’s allure but also enhances its efficiency and maneuverability.

Further standout features include a Neptune Lounge offering an unparalleled underwater view through a massive 3.40m x 1.30m underwater window. Guests can marvel at the breathtaking world below sea level while enjoying the luxurious comfort of the lounge. Another dedicated haven for relaxation on main deck is the mobile 12 x 4 meter pool, its floor capable of being elevated to the upper level and adorned with liquid marble, creating an illusion reminiscent of the sea’s surface when raised, while the pool walls and surroundings are also luxuriously enveloped in marble.

The crow’s nest, positioned at the foot of the mast, promises an exceptional observation experience, giving the Owner and his family a privileged vantage point to soak in the surrounding beauty. Also, an exquisitely arranged large marble-clad fireplace complemented by a generous round sofa on the forward sundeck offers a warm and inviting ambiance for relaxation and social gatherings. Furthermore, the yacht features a fully certified helicopter pad on the sky deck, catering to the Owner’s discerning taste and providing easy access to remote locations.

The proud Owner entrusted the expertise of Cornelsen & Partner to carefully project manage the construction process from the outset and throughout. Their collaboration ensured the seamless execution of the Owner’s vision throughout the build of MY LIVA.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.

The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.

Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8. The Harbor Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."

A California yacht owner's vicious beef with a dock worker has reached death-threat levels -- and their exchange was caught on camera and included a nude, and very rude, gesture!

Check out the clip ... it all unfolds when San Diego entrepreneur Ajay Thakore swings by the swanky Marriott Marquis Marina in his rare $4.5M Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht to pick up one of his employees -- but things boil over when dock worker Joseph Holt tells him he can't be there.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, flips out on Holt big time ... and starts spewing threats like, "I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill."

And it doesn't stop there -- as Thakore's pulling out of the harbor, he drops trou to make a full frontal salute in Holt's direction. Stay classy, San Diego!

Holt's only retaliation was flipping the bird, and he later told CBS8 that was all he could do to keep his cool and avoid escalating the situation.

Holt says parts of the altercation were not captured on camera, and he adds ... Thakore not only threatened to kill him, but also claimed to have connections who could totally mess up his life.

Holt also says Thakore pulled out $100 bills and tossed them at him, even chucking some in the water.

BTW, Thakore's done some backpedaling since the ugly exchange -- he now says, "The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange."

FWIW ... One of Thakore’s employees claims the whole thing began because other dock workers blocked him from boarding the yacht.

Oh, and if that fancy Lambo yacht looks familiar -- it's the same one Chuck Liddell recently tumbled off just last month. Now it's famous AND infamous!

Talk about living a pampered life. When Moca’ s first owner took delivery of the 208-foot superyacht at builder Benetti ’s yard in Livorno, Italy, back in 2016, he wanted his first cruise to be to the Bahamas.

Instead of doing what most owners would do and instruct the crew to get it there on time, to avoid the wear and tear of a transatlantic crossing, he had the massive superyacht hoisted on the deck of a freighter and shipped there. The owner, a Greek shipping magnate, then used the yacht just twice before listing it.

After the bespoke Benetti changed hands in October 2019, and was renamed Moca, it continued to lead a sheltered life, spending winters in the Bahamas and summers in the Hamptons. Even though the yacht is available for the occasional charter , its current owners are so protective and selective, they only let “caring” customers pay the $475,000-a-week fee to enjoy their yacht.

“They don’t allow day charters or parties on board,” said Frank Grzeszczak Jr. with FGI Yacht Group. Grzeszczak gave Robb Report an exclusive tour of Moca at this week’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, where the yacht officially entered the brokerage market at €39.95 million, or roughly $46.6 million.

Originally named Waku , it was built by Benetti to ABS class for the first owner who specified a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, a 35-foot beam for voluminous interior spaces and 13-foot draft for good stability. The boat is equipped with MTU diesels, packing 1,029 hp each; enough to push Moca to a top speed of 18.5 mph and cruise serenely at 14. Her 30,000-gallon fuel tanks give her a range of close to 5,000 nautical miles. In five years, only 1,000 hours have been put on the engines.

The interior design by Francesca Muzio, co-founder of Italian studio FM Architettura, provides accommodation for up to 14 guests in seven staterooms, plus a multitude of multi-use spaces indoor and out. “The owners are big family people who love to have their extended family and friends aboard,” says Grzeszczak.

The main, big-windowed salon is an oversized, comfy space with a neutral, beach-cottage look of soft-white sofas, bleached oak for the walls and dark wood flooring. It’s a theme that continues pretty much throughout the boat. The salon opens out on to a huge covered back deck with a big U-shaped sofa providing seats for 16 and a large table for casual alfresco dining. An air-conditioning system is built into the ceiling to provide respite on hot, humid days.

Also on this level is an industrial-grade galley with extensive pantries, fridge/freezers, and a 1,000-bottle wine cellar just steps away. According to Grzeszczak there’s enough cold and dry storage for the yacht to go off the grid for more than four months. Right now, Moca runs with a crew of 15.

One of the design highlights is the glass-tube elevator that runs between all four levels of the yacht. With its shimmering chrome framing, it looks like a piece of art. Down on the lower level are the sleeping quarters, with twin bunk rooms for kids, and a spacious VIP double cabin, each with their own bathroom and shower. Forward are two more identical VIP double cabins.

But the piece de resistance is the owner’s suite on the upper level. “It’s not really a suite, but a whole apartment,” says Grzeszczak. “It has an impressive amount of space, including what must be the biggest walk-in closet of any superyacht in its class.”

The master bedroom stretches the entire 38-foot width of Moca , and comes with a vast bathroom and massive walk-in shower. Close by is a lovely owner’s office, with views through a picture window.

A press of a button opens a door from the master suite onto a private outdoor deck, where there is an alfresco dining table for 14. On the top level, there’s yet another outdoor deck with steps to the pool, and doors opening into a room that, since Covid-19, is no longer a massage and yoga room but a classroom for kids. Steps away is the yacht’s gym and reconfigured massage space.

Our final stop is Moca’s gleaming engine room with the pair of shiny, stainless steel-adorned MTUs, generators and Quantum stabilizers. Says Grzeszczak: “Since the owner bought the yacht, every single piece of machinery has been overhauled. Nothing has been overlooked. It really has been a labor of love for the owners.”

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

R ussian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.
