There are plenty of sailboats that have distinct features that separate one from another. In fact, there are some sailboats you can row and others you cannot.

Some smaller sailboats are grouped into this category, like the dinghy, dory, and rowboat. But which sailboats are ones you can row?The ones listed below are an excellent place to start in search of a sailboat that you can row. These boats you can row without compromising your sailing experience. Other brands have similar features, but these stand out to the rest in the industry.

The best sailing rowboats are:

Chesapeake Light Craft

While most of these options are going to be smaller boats, each one will serve its purpose on the water. These boats have a respectable price point and allow you to have the best of both worlds when it comes to sailing and rowing.

According to experienced sailors in the industry, you want to know the differences between what your boat can do and cannot. For sailboats that you can row, you will see exactly what they are intended to do versus a cruiser or other sailboat.

‍ Best Sailing Rowboats

There are a lot of factors that go into a sailboat being the best rowboat. Depending on the brand, size, cost, and desired use, many will compete for your business.

While there are potentially more brands out there, these sailing rowboats make the cut based on consumer reports and quality. In addition, they all have a rich history in the sailing rowboat market so you can rest assured you are dealing with high quality craftsmanship.

Angus Rowboats

The Angus Rowboats have been in the business since 2009 when a married couple, Julie and Colin Angus, decided to put their adventurous minds together. In doing so, they have literally accomplished every rowing feat you could possibly imagine and have put that experience to good use when designing boats.

The Sailing Row Cruiser is arguably the best boat that they offer in terms of versatility. This boat was designed with the same racing hull but they gave it a ketch sailing rig with planing amas.

When sailing, this boat can reach up to 12 knots. As for rowing in calmer waters, you can expect to reach up to four knots or so.

The main hull can be utilized as the focus of rowing for one person, while the other hulls can contain passengers. When anchored or docked, this boat can also sleep an adult in the cabin.

Looking at costs, it is $1300 for the Row Cruiser Hull and $1820 for the sailing components. To have it all put together, you can have it completed for $3500.

Chesapeake Light Craft (CLC) has been dominating for decades in the rowing boats industry. Back in 2020, they were shipping out their 40,000th boat kit.

They have a fairly small staff compared to other big name brands, with just over 20 employees. When it comes to building row boats, they have excellent experience.

They have a handful of sailing rowboats to choose from. These include:

Passagemaker Standard

Northeaster dory, jimmy skiff ii, eastport nesting pram.

This boat is one of the easiest to build, row, and sail. If you are in the market to build your boat with the kit, this is an excellent choice for first timers. You can expect this to cost around $1200 and up depending on the added features.

This rowing boat is slightly bigger than the Skerry, as it holds up to three people. If you want something lighter, this boat weighs roughly 90 pounds compared to heavier dinghies. The cost to build this boat is around $3200 and up depending on added features.

One of the more versatile dory boats out there is the Northeaster. This one offers a substantial payload of 800 pounds to carry plenty of gear and a few passengers. This classic looking boat will range in cost, starting around $3600 and more with the sailing components.

The original Skiff was designed in 1998 and had a lot of success. Over the next 20 years, the Jimmy Skiff II was designed with better handling, more comfort, better seats, and is 15 percent larger. You are looking at $3700 or more to add the sailing components to this boat.

This dinghy is just under eight feet, so it is light and compatible for anyone wanting to get on the water. These carry a decent load while also being able to sail. The price to add on the sailing components will cost around $2200 or more.

The Norseboat brand prides themselves as the “Swiss army knife of boats”. They offer three sailboats that you can row, which include the Norseboat 12.5, 17.5 Classic, and the 21.5.

Each boat offers unique features that can suit any sailor's tastes. They all are well built and are fast, but the size could make the biggest difference. The prices range from $13,000 to $35,000 depending on size and features.

Norseboat 12.5

This cruiser/tender offers the perfect blend of functionality and performance. Most view this one as just a dinghy, but it can be easily used as a daysailer while rowing. The sailing components are a gaff-rigged cat with a pivoting carbon mast.

Norseboat 17.5 Classic

The best selling Norseboat in their lineup is the 17.5 Classic. This design was the first one made in 2002 when founder Kevin Jeffrey made it happen.

This rig is around 18 feet and can be put through tough conditions while sailing. While sailing, you can expect around eight knots and around three knots while rowing.

Norseboat 21.5

The 21.5 is the best daysailer and coastal cruiser they offer with high performance. This one is just under 22 feet long and can sit up to eight people comfortably.

The sailplan is a sloop rig with a pivoting carbon mast and furling genoa. Whether you are sailing or rowing, you can have the best of both worlds with this design.

Whitehall rowing boats have a unique perspective on rowing. They emphasize getting back to nature and being more outdoors, which their brand nails on the head perfectly.

Their Classic Whitehall Spirit 17 sailing rowboat is one of the best sailing rowboats you can find on the market. Whether you are a beginner or seasoned professional, you can definitely navigate comfortably.

This one allows you to visit shallow waters with its kick-up rudder and easily move your camping gear or picnic supplies with ease. It also does not take long to set up and can easily be swapped from sailing to rowing when needed.

They pride themselves so much on their craft that they claim it will easily last for 100 years, assuming you take care of it. With their built in buoyancy, it is arguably very hard to sink too. You can find this boat starting around $37,000.

Lite Boat XP

Lite XP offers an interesting sailing and rowing experience. These designs are arguably some of the more appealing ones, but they also take into account confort and performance.

The Lite XP 20 has a small cabin to hold two people and you can even sleep on. This is also a perfect size to carry enough belongings to travel for a few days. The price begins around $26,000.

The other one they feature is the Lite XP 16, which is slightly smaller than the 20 and is considered a dinghy. Essentially the same features, you are only missing out on a few feet and storage space. This one costs around $15,500.

Why People Want to Sail and Row

For quite some time, it seemed almost impossible to find a boat that you can sail and row. Sure, many boats are excellent at one or the other, but not many are great at both.

Depending on the brand you choose, you can have high quality aspects of both without compromising on either of those features. However, the price could be the biggest influence in your decision.

The real reason sailors want to incorporate both is that you can be a little more active in nature and still have a great sailing experience. When the wind dies down and sailing is not as attractive, you could opt for rowing instead.

If you have multiple people on board, this can create an excellent bonding experience for families and friends. You are likely going to need everyone’s help at some point on board, so turning this into a friendly experience is great.

While some sailing rowboats are smaller in size, there are a handful that can accommodate a few people to sleep in. Depending on your traveling situations and location, you could travel in these for days if you plan your routes accordingly.

How to Find the Perfect Sailing Rowboat

Before taking a loan or having your money ready to buy a boat, you first need to understand your desired use of a sailing rowboat. You need to know where and how you will use it.

A combination of many things will affect the process of your decision. This boils down to your main sailing purpose, how often you intend to row or sail, the passenger loads, and if you intend to sleep on it.

If you plan on sailing roughly 65 percent of the time and rowing for about 35, then a Norseboat or Jimmy Skiff II is ideal. If you primarily want to row but like the added feature of a sail, then sticking with a Northeaster dory, Eastport Nesting Pram, or Skerry might be right for you.

Some sailing rowboats might incorporate a motor, whether it is to be used for safety or speed. Regardless of how you use it, it could affect the overall performance of the boat.

Price ranges might be one of the biggest factors in some sailors getting their hands on certain brands. While expensive does not necessarily mean the best, there are quality options to consider when looking for the best sailing rowboat, such as comfort and luxury.

The dinghies or smaller sailing rowboats are going to be the cheapest options. If you can build them yourself, you can actually save a few thousand dollars.

Sailing experience is another thing to keep in mind before jumping into a boat like the Norseboat 21.5. If you have little to no experience, you might want to consider a smaller boat or something a little easier to operate.

Should You Build or Buy Completed?

There is nothing wrong with choosing a smaller, cheaper dinghy to get things started. This way you can learn the basics of sailing and understand how to use the sail but also incorporate rowing without breaking the bank.

If you want to save money, one of the best things you can do is order the build kits online and construct them yourself. They have building plans that you can follow and some only take roughly a week to put together depending on the size.

Building your own sailing rowboat from a kit can be a lifelong rewarding experience. As long as you have a basic understanding of common tools and can follow instructions, you can put together these boats.

If you like a specific brand but do not want to order their kit, most will have their build available for purchase. Just keep in mind that you will have to source all of the materials yourself and it could potentially take longer to find everything you need.

With that being said, you are likely limited to what size you can put together yourself. Unless you are more experienced in building boats, you might not be able to put together some of the bigger sailing rowboats.

Whichever method you choose, the biggest difference between buying or building is time. Of course the money is a large factor, but time building could be several weeks if you are dealing with a complicated build.

Catamaran Rowboat

New member. I am building a 13 foot catamaran rowboat. I am wondering if anyone has done something similar. I am familiar with materials and have a good design. I was wondering how people with a similar small boat feel about it's stability, safety, and handling.

Hi Richard, great to see people exploring the catamaran for rowing. There has been surprisingly little development in this area, indeed in displacement style catamaran dinghys at all. I have designed a range of dinghys that are primarily aimed at the tender role for larger vessels however there has been a great deal of interest from the boating community in general in this concept. I am surprised given the amount of interest in these dinghys that there is not more designs of this type available. Like everything else in boats there are compromises to be made however after nearly 9 years using the magic carpet 3.5 I could not go back to the old style mono dinghy, even though it has both its merits and afficionados in spades, I find my dinghy meets all my needs fairly well with little need for any compromise whatsoever. Goodluck with your build I hope you enjoy as much success in your endeavours as i have. I have attached a link to my design, maybe there is some design inspiration there for you. Cheers Craig

The boat is very stable. However, it was rowed on a lake, never in heavy waves, and I doubt it would work well since it has so little freeboard, including the height of the heels and butt above water. Initially, the first one had completely round bottom hulls, with the stems just coming down to the water. It was uncontrollabe, it would turn left or right randomly after 2 or 3 strokes. I put a fixed skeg hanging off the stern. That made it go straight, but then it was hard to turn. Then I cut down the size of the skeg until it held course, but could still be turned. After that it was a pleasure to row. Even too heavy (50 #) it was very easy to get to speed, carried the speed between strokes, and showed an extremely small wake. Which you could see since you are facing backwards. I did design my wifes boat to have about 1 1/2" of the stem in the water, fore and aft. This made it good for course keeping, easy to turn, and removed the skeg which was a pain for launching and retrieving. The only problem is that there is a relatively narrow total weight which will keep the stems immersed correctly. Too little weight and they have less immersion. If it's too little you could get where it won't hold course. The 4" freeboard means someone heavier sinks it too much. My wife is 125#. My son at 185# sinks it to the decks, making it submarine with any waves. It also was difficult to turn with my son. I can't get on it. I suggest you make a fixed skeg, which is retractable for transport. The boat does not get used much because the "racer" type seating is not comfortable. There is no place to rest your feet, except where you push on the "rigger". No back rest to take a break. No place to carry anything, like a drink. Not very "practical" for anything besides going down the lake at a good clip.

Ocean Rowing: What You Need To Know Before Starting

There is nothing like rowing on the ocean. It will challenge you both physically and mentally, but trust us - the rewarding feeling of conquering this cruise is well worth the work you’ll have to put in. The depth and vastness of the ocean cannot be replicated on even the biggest of lakes. And when you factor in the intensity of the surf, you can see why many consider ocean rowing to be the toughest style out there.

Is this something you’re looking to get started with? If so, you’ve come to the right place. At Red Beard Sailing, we’re here to provide the tips and equipment you need to enjoy safe, successful rowing in the ocean. In this guide, we’re going to explain what exactly this is, and what makes it different from other styles. Then, we’ll cover everything you need to know before attempting it yourself - including techniques, safety equipment, and boat recommendations. We’ve got a lot to cover so let’s not waste any more time. 

What Is Ocean Rowing?

Ocean rowing is not new - but the popularity surrounding this style has ramped up dramatically in recent years. The first “deliberate” attempt at rowing across the ocean was in 1896. Two men crossed the Atlantic ocean in 55 days, departing New York (Manhattan) and landing at the Isles of Sicily. This excursion spanned a whopping 3,250 nautical miles. What really makes this feat impressive is the lack of modern equipment and technology used to accomplish it. In fact, the Ocean Rowing Society separates rowing done before 1981 and today’s rowing efforts due to the new equipment and technology available. This means no GPS, EPIRBS, life rafts, and of course, no cell phones.

Ocean Rowing Today

These days, rowing across the ocean falls under the umbrella of “modern-day rows”. There is a wide range of boat styles - with the largest vessels accommodating up to 14 rowers at once. However, it’s far more common to see ocean rowboats that accommodate solo rowers, tandem rowers, or groups of four rowers. We’ll talk more about ocean rowboats later on. The Ocean Rowing Society oversees frequent races and events challenging rowers in unique settings. However, the Atlantic ocean is still the most commonly crossed sea. 

Another huge distinction between excursions of the past and modern-day rows is the technology used. All those things we mentioned above that weren’t in existence yet are in play today. This makes ocean rowing today far safer. With that said, it is not inherently “safe”. But, you can make it as safe as possible with proper preparation and guidance. We’ll cover all that later. First, we want to compare ocean rowing to other styles.

How Open Ocean Rowing Is Different From Other Styles

We don’t recommend open ocean rowing to anyone who isn’t an experienced rower. With that said, how does this style compare to others? What can you expect transitioning from the lake to the open waters of the sea? Lassi Karonen, a Swedish Olympic rower, was on the record having said that the similarities between the open ocean and flat-water rowing start and end with the rowing stroke itself. When we say this experience is unlike anything you’ve experienced, we mean it.

Water Intensity 

The most obvious difference is the intensity of the water. You will encounter much more aggressive surf while traversing the ocean. That’s why it is so important to carefully plan your trip to minimize the chance of you encountering outright dangerous water.

Overnight Trips & Food Planning

Another key difference? You don’t just row for the day, pull your boat into a dock, and call it quits. You’ll be sleeping in your boat overnight more often than not. This isn’t the most comfortable experience - but you’ll be so exhausted by the end of the day that falling asleep is the least of your concerns. Because ocean rowing trips take weeks or months in some cases, you’ll need to stock up on food and supplies as well. If you don’t eat well, you won’t recover well. And that can lead to dangerous situations where you’re incapable of continuing your excursion - the last thing you want.

Boat Style & Gear Differs Too

As you can imagine, the rowboat and gear you use on flatwater will differ from those of an ocean rower. Ocean rowboats are generally wider and heavier to account for the more aggressive surf and winds you experience on the open sea. Sometimes, they also have faster slides to make for easier rowing through rough conditions. Furthermore, you’ll be required to wear a PFD (personal floatation device) as an ocean rower - it’s recommended, but not required on flat water. While you may be able to use other parts of your arsenal, such as your oars, you may find that upgrading to a coastal-style version is worth it.

Ocean Rowing: Pointers We Wish Someone Told Us

We’re going to use this section to share some pointers we wish someone had told us prior to starting out on our first adventure. The rowing itself will be slightly different. You’ll find that being relaxed while you row is far more important on the water. You need to feel the water beneath you and make your strokes accordingly. The manner in which you stroke in the first 30 minutes may be different from the next 30 minutes - as conditions change as you move through the water. You’ll be forced to constantly adapt to wind, waves, and current. You’ll also need to constantly change your hand heights in order to keep blades in the water.

Another key tip is to keep up your momentum. This is important even as you turn, as these larger boats need propulsion to keep steering and of course, to prevent capsizing as waves crash into the boat. Here are a few more tips before moving on to what you need to know leading into your first trip:

• Use a soft catch and apply your power mid-stroke once you’ve felt the water and have a decent connection
• Row more upright with a shortened slide. You will want to sacrifice stability over reach. You’ll make up for this loss in reach by using your leg drive to generate speed.
• If conditions are especially rough, a faster slide will help you gain more stability. You’ll also want to get some separation between your hands in these rough conditions.

5 Must Haves Before Attempting Ocean Rowing

Now that we’ve covered a few of the key differences that set rowing in the ocean apart from flatwater styles, let’s talk about what you need to know to prepare yourself for that first excursion. With proper planning, you’ll enjoy your first trip and get there safely. Let’s start by discussing proper planning.

1) Prepare Yourself Mentally & Physically

It’s no secret that rowing in the open ocean is more exhausting physically and mentally than on the lake. If you have some time to train your body to prepare for this rigorous undertaking, you’ll set yourself up for success. It’s not just about getting stronger - but building up endurance, too. You need to cross as much water as possible each day along your trip, so being able to row for at least 8-10 hours a day is essential.

You should also take the time to prepare yourself mentally. If you ask those who have successfully crossed open seas - or even those who go short day trips in coastal settings - rowing in the ocean is mentally taxing. You need unparalleled focus. And the longer your trip is, the stronger your “why” needs to be. You can’t expect to push through to the end if you’re not fully emotionally invested.

2) You Need Ample Experience Rowing In Calmer Waters

We said it before and we’ll say it again - do not attempt open ocean rowing if you’re a novice. This is a rowing style reserved for those who have ample experience in calmer waters. We know you’re eager to brave the open ocean - but take the time to learn in a lake first. It will pay off in the long run. After all, you want to enjoy your first experience out on the ocean, right? You won’t be able to do so if you’re new to rowing.

3) Stay Safe With A Float Plan & The Buddy System

We cannot stress this enough - safety is paramount when rowing in the open ocean. There are two things you can do to stay safe: have a float plan and row with a buddy (or 3!). Of course, having the right gear goes a long way in staying safe. We’ll share an essential gear checklist later.

A float plan is essentially telling someone your exact route, the time you’re going out on the water, and any stops along the way. This allows people to track you as you row and in a worst-case scenario, head out to search for you if you don’t end up where you’re supposed to be, when you’re supposed to be there. Here are the specifics of what your float plan should contain:

• Vessel description (length, make, registration number, etc.)
• Vessel transportation description (license plate on trailer/vehicle used to get boat to the water)
• Passenger information (number of passengers, names, addresses, emergency contacts)
• Route information (where exactly are you starting and when are you starting? What is your expected return time? If there are any stopping points, dates, or times, include those as well)
• Phone numbers for local authorities or the US Coast Guard

It’s also advised that your first few outings aren’t solo rows. We encourage you to find a more experienced rower than yourself for that first trip. Better yet? Get a team of 4 together with the other 3 rowers all having some experience out on the open sea.

4) Choose Your Ocean Rowing Boat Carefully

As we’ve mentioned throughout this discussion, ocean rowing boats are different from what you may be used to. They are typically bigger and heavier to account for the larger surf and more aggressive water conditions you’ll encounter. So, what type of ocean rowboat should you choose?

4) Stay Up To Date On Weather & Water Conditions

Leading up to your first trip you need to stay up to date on weather and water conditions. The last thing you want to do is push your departure date back - we get it. This leads to rescheduling other stuff in your life, perhaps changing your lodging plans, and other added costs. But trust us - these minor setbacks and inconveniences are not an issue compared to the hazard of setting out in unsafe conditions.

5) Get All The Necessary Gear Ready

What is the history of Gorky Park?

• In the pre-revolutionary period, Gorky Park was a city dump and wasteland, which was cleared in 1923 to host the All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition
• In 1928, a huge park was planned on the former site of the exhibition. It would not just be a place of leisure, but a place to proudly display Soviet culture and daily life
• Gorky Park has remained a cultural hub ever since, and has been renovated and added to over the years to make it one of Moscow’s top attractions today

Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation

Gorky Park is the most famous park of Moscow, created during the Soviet period as a hub for relaxation and cultural activities. The park is beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, who visit in all seasons to stroll, enjoy sports, admire the park’s attractions, and attend cultural events. Gorky Park is the central part of an ensemble of four green spaces – Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve – which curve around the southern bank of the Moskva River to the south-west of Moscow city centre. Here you may spend some time and enjoy nature and contemprary art during your vacation in Moscow .

History of Gorky Park

In the 17th century, the eastern bank of the Moskva River beyond Moscow’s city limits was home to floodplain meadows, where palace horses grazed. From the mid-1850s, events such as cockfights, fistfights, and races were held here, and by the 20th century this area had become a city dump where the unemployed and homeless people of Moscow lived, which remained this way until the Soviet period. This wasteland lay in stark contrast to the adjoining Neskuchny Sad – ‘merry garden’ – which lay to its south, an area of aristocratic country estates and elaborate gardens.

Following the October Revolution, Vladimir Lenin travelled around Moscow to find a suitable site for the first All-Russian Agricultural and Artisan Industrial Exhibition, which would reveal opportunities for socialist development of agriculture and industry. Lenin decided on the wasteland alongside the Moskva River, which was cleared with a programme of community work. In 1923, the exhibition began. It encompassed 250 pavilions dedicated to different themes of agriculture and industry, and was divided into thematic zones, such as villages, livestock, crops, engineering, railways, republics of the USSR, and foreign countries. The organisation of the exhibition demarcated the future layout and size of Gorky Park, and the paths, ‘zones’, and main square of the exhibition have been preserved until the present day. In March 1928, Moscow City Council decided to establish a park of culture and recreation on the site of the former exhibition, which would also encompass the Neskuchny Garden. Moscow’s residents were instrumental in the construction of the park – they voiced their desires for events spaces, physical education and leisure facilities, and gave up their weekends to build the park. The park’s main architect was Konstantin Melnikov.

Did you know? Konstantin Melnikov also helped to construct Lenin’s Mausoleum and the Rusakov Worker’s Club, one of Moscow’s Constructivist masterpieces .

Over 100,000 Muscovites flocked to the opening of the park on 12th August 1928. The brand-new park was equipped with two theatres, a cinema, nursery, reading room, restaurant and café, music stages, sports arenas, rowing boats, and even a giant helter-skelter slide. Unfortunately, because of the vast size of the crowd and the general excitement, the park was damaged and closed until September.

Did you know? The park was not named after Maxim Gorky, writer and founder of Socialist Realism, until 1933.

In 1929, Betty Glan – at the mere age of 26 – became director of the park. She decided to reconceptualise it, uniting leisure, design, and ideology with the help of Moscow’s most eminent architects, designers and artists. Over the next decade, more cultural venues were established in the park, the Pushkinskaya Embankment along the Moskva River was developed, and the landscaping of the park was carefully cultivated. Architect Alexander Vlasov was particularly influential, and won the Grand Prix at the 1937 World Exhibition in Paris for his design of Gorky Park. This period under Glan’s directorship until 1937 was known as the ‘golden age’ of Gorky Park, which became not just a place for recreation, but a public space where Soviet culture and everyday life could be proudly displayed.

Did you know? During the Second World War topical events were held in Gorky Park, such as the championship in bayonet combat, grenade-throwing competitions, and air defence training. What’s more, an exhibition of captured enemy weapons – tanks, artillery, aeroplanes, and more – was organised in Gorky Park and continually updated throughout the war.

In the post-war decades new attractions were continually added to Gorky Park. These included the majestic 24-metre triumphal arch at the entrance to the park, an astronomical observatory (which remains open today), the famous Ferris wheel (unfortunately dismantled in 2008), and a fountain with lights and music.

The Gorky Park ensemble continued to flourish as a centre of culture and recreation in post-Soviet Russia. The adjoining Muzeon Park of Arts was founded in 1992, and Garage Museum of Contemporary Art was established in Gorky Park in 2008. The ensemble underwent serious reconstruction in 2011. Many new sports facilities were added, including centres for beach sports and extreme sports, bicycle paths and sports equipment rental hubs, and much effort was devoted to reviving original buildings, sculptures, and landscape compositions. Two years later, the embankment of the Moskva River from the southern tip of Zamoskvorechye Island all the way to Sparrow Hills was redeveloped and pedestrianised, making it possible to peacefully walk or cycle along the Moskva for many kilometres.

What can you do at Gorky Park today?

• Explore the park and see architectural attractions, fountains, and beautiful gardens
• Visit Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gorky Park Museum
• Go boating on the lakes and stroll down the Pushkinskaya Embankment
• Rent bicycles or scooters, skateboard, and visit the sports centres

What can you do at Gorky Park?

While exploring the treelined paths of Gorky Park, you’ll come across a number of attractions. To the west of the main entrance, near the river, is a beautiful geometric bandstand used for music and literary evenings in the Soviet period. As you head down the central alley of Gorky Park from the main entrance, you’ll see a statue of Maxim Gorky on your right, and discover the light and music fountain with its dancing jets of water – find the schedule of its performances here .

Did you know? Don’t be afraid to feed the red squirrels and birds you encounter on your walk around Gorky Park – there are even vending machines which sell special food for the animals!

The southern section of Gorky Park is occupied by the Golitsynsky Garden. In 1802, the Golitsyn Hospital was founded here as a hospital for the poor; it still adjoins Gorky Park today. Gardens were created as a relaxation place for patients, extending from the hospital building to the riverbank, and included landscaped gardens, a Chinese Bridge, and two ponds. On the riverbank is the Rotunda of the Golitsyn Hospital, which has been preserved since the 19th century. There is also a rose garden and fountain by the Bolshoi Golitsynsky Pond.

Did you know? In the Golitsynsky Garden is also located an unusual architectural monument – a public toilet designed by Alexander Vlasov in the 1930s, which is recognised as an ‘object of cultural heritage’!

Outdoor activities

Gorky Park’s extensive and varied grounds aren’t only good for walks! You can relax on the water by renting boats to sail on the Pionersky and Bolshoi Golitsynsky Ponds, or visiting the Olivkovy Beach on the Pushkinskaya Embankment to sunbathe. As well as this, you can hire bicycles, electric scooters, longboards or even roller skates to explore the park and embankments, play table tennis, visit the sports complex to play football, basketball, handball, badminton or volleyball, or visit the Vans skatepark or Nike sports centre for workouts and classes such as rooftop yoga.

Gorky Park Museum

Visit the Gorky Park Museum, located in the left pier of the entrance arch. The current exhibition is dedicated to Gorky Park in the ‘golden age’ of the 1930s, and shows the development of Moscow’s central park through the eyes of Betty Glan. There is an observation deck on top of the arch, which offers a lovely view over the park and Moscow’s skyline.

Did you know? In the entrance arch there is also a gift shop where you can purchase balls, frisbees, blankets, and other items to enjoy your visit to Gorky Park.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

In Gorky Park you will find Garage Museum, Russia’s first philanthropic institution dedicated to contemporary art, founded in 2008 by Roman Abramovich and Dasha Zhukova. 10 major exhibitions are hosted each year to showcase the work of established and up-and-coming artists. Also organised are a rich programme of events including curator-led excursions, workshops, masterclasses, lectures, concerts, performances, festivals, and film screenings at Garage’s outdoor cinema. Food and drink

There are plenty of excellent cafes and restaurants dotted around Gorky Park, where you can stop for a quick coffee or enjoy a long meal with a view. They include the stylish lakeside café Ostrovok (Little Island) and upmarket restaurant Vremena Goda (Seasons) which serve European and Russian food, colourful lakeside Thai restaurant Lebedinoe Ozero (Swan Lake), trattoria Merkato with its huge summer terrace, restaurant Syrovarnya (Cheese Factory) with a menu focused on its homemade cheese, food-truck court Restoparking which is stylised as a drive-in café, and ice-cream and tea shop Chaynaya Vysota.

Gorky Park is bordered by Muzeon Park of Arts, Neskuchny Garden, and Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve. This huge ensemble curves for eight kilometres along the bank of the Moskva River, providing a beautiful oasis of green in Europe’s biggest city.

Muzeon Park of Arts

Muzeon Park of Arts is the largest open-air sculpture museum in Russia, home to 1,000 sculptures by Soviet and Russian sculptors, including those by famous artists. A large part of Muzeon is occupied by the New Tretyakov Gallery , which houses Russia’s most complete exhibition of national art from the 20th century to the present day. The pedestrianised Krymskaya Embankment which extends alongside Muzeon has recently undergone redevelopment, and is one of Moscow’s most popular spots to relax.

Neskuchny Garden

Neskuchny Garden is the oldest park in Moscow, founded in 1728 by Prince Nikita Trubetskoy, who threw fantastic festivities in his manor house and gardens – neskuchny means ‘merry’ in Russian. Many other noble families also built their country estates in this area, which became a public park and garden after being acquired by the royal family. Today, the Neskuchny Garden is home to historical buildings, fountains, and gardens from the 18th and 19th centuries, sports facilities, an open-air theatre, and a huge greenhouse which supplies flowers to Gorky Park.

Sparrow Hills

Sparrow Hills Nature Reserve is a huge forest park lining the steep bank of the Moskva River and the only specially protected nature area near the city centre. It is home to ecological trails, ponds, natural springs, rare species of plants and animals, many spots for picnicking, cafes, and a mini zoo. At the bottom of the park lie the Vorobyovskaya and Andreevskaya Embankments, with promenades along the Moskva River, a beach, and piers offering boat trips. As with Gorky Park, Sparrow Hills is hugely popular for sports and outdoor activities in all seasons. A new winter sports complex with snowboarding, ice skating, and ski tracks and jumps is currently under construction. When the weather is pleasant, you can rent a bicycle to ride the 8 kilometres along the river from Muzeon to Sparrow Hills.
