Half Tonner

Since 2004 The Half Ton Class Europe is guiding the revival of the former IOR half tonners. Half tonners are 9m long sailing vessels, build to the IOR rating rules from 1967 to 1992. A boat is considered as a 'half tonner' if it fulfills the following requirements: • if it has been designed & build as a prototype one-off in the period between January 1st 1967 and December 31st 1994, and • if it has been once eligible to participate at an edition of the IOR Half Ton Cup, and • if no alterations have been made to the hull of the boat (except keel & rudder). Every production boat derived from the hull of a prototype one-off half tonner will also be considered as a half tonner.

Early mini and Half Tonners

Design number: 14 year: 1977.

Despite enjoying his work at YACHTS AND YACHTING magazine what Humphreys really wanted to do was design. After three years on the full-time payroll he left to set up his design business, but with no imminent commercial viability as such he kept his column with Y&Y and furthermore freelanced for other overseas yachting magazines. He also carried out a huge amount of rating consultancy work, advising owners on the International Offshore Rule IOR and drawing up modifications for their boats. This still did not seem to leave very much time for his own design work, but by the mid-Seventies he was beginning to see some opportunities.

In this period he designed a couple of Mini Tonners and a pair of Half Tonners, all of them essentially owner-build projects (it used to happen a great deal in those days). The Mini Tonner SHH-AM, for example, was built in London mews garage by owner Paul Howard (she was placed best British boat in the Mini Ton worlds in La Rochelle in 1977), while the Conquest 23 Mini Tonner was built as a production boat by Peter Lloyd and his son-in-law Clive Phippard under the banner of CK Marine of Weymouth.

Wally and Pat Naismith built the Half Tonner Solan Goose themselves of cold moulded cedar under the inspiration of the Gougeon’s excellent book on their WEST system, while Nick Palmer built Humbug of foam sandwich construction. There was an explosion of Half Ton interest at the time with over 50 boats competing in the British trials in 1977 just to qualify for the Half Ton worlds. Unfortunately, neither Solan Goose nor Humbug made the grade.

Solan Goose was later sailed across the Atlantic by Bob Salmon and she is believed to be in Antigua now.

Harlequin is a highly successful Stephen Jones half ton racing yacht, customised for IRC, and ideal for the upcoming half ton classic cup and other competitive sailing events. She is currently ashore having not been campaigned in recent seasons, her last 2012 IRC handicap was 0.929 and she has proven competitive against MG HS30, SJ30 and Corby rivals in the past!

Construction

Designed by Stephen Jones for the 1986 Half Ton Cup, and built by her first owner, Howard Sellars. Composite GRP/Kevlar/epoxy/foam sandwich construction (the hull was epoxy coated in 2011). Yellow/cream coloured hull and light grey painted non-slip decks. Lead fin keel. Tiller steering to spade hung rudder. Self draining cockpit.

Modified in the stern to a Jones design (when she was known as ’Sorceress’) for a later Half Ton Cup. Further modifications, including removal of ’frog eye’ bumps at the forward station in 1990. Hull in way of keel rebuilt in a heavier lay-up by Reg White Ltd. under surveyors supervision to repair and strengthen for future use.

The Mudeford RNLI inshore lifeboat crew shot dramatic footage of the sinking of Alchemist during last Saturday’s JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race.

Alchemist , a 1977 Dubois-designed Half Tonner, was built in Cowes at the Lallows boatyard for lifetime owner Mark Wynter, who is Commodore of the Island Sailing Club, the organising club of the Round the Island Race. Wynter was not onboard during this year’s race, which saw two crew rescued from Alchemist as she sank rapidly in around 17 metres of water just east of the Needles in strong winds on 2 July.

It has been widely reported that Alchemist hit the wreck of the SS Varvassi , an infamous obstacle of the course created when a Greek cargo steamer ran aground in 1947. Despite attempts by the inshore lifeboat crew to pass a pump to the crew onboard Alchemist, and to attach a stern towline, the beautifully varnished wooden yacht was taking on water rapidly and sank in Scratchells Bay. Both crew were rescued safely by the RNLI RIB, and an RNLI crewman was recovered from the water immediately after.

Besides competing in almost every Round the Island Race since her launch, Alchemist was a familiar sight on the Solent for nearly 30 years, and a frequent competitor in the JOG (Junior Offshore Group) races across the Channel. Many key figures in Cowes sailing community enjoyed their first taste of yacht and offshore racing onboard the Half Tonner. Yacht designer John Corby posted via social media “Seeing it under construction at Lallows when I was about 15 was one of the things that made me want to build boats.”

Both the RNLI and independent lifeboats were also called to multiple incidents during the day, including a dismasting, rudder and steering failures, and an injured crew member who was transferred to land after two boats collided.

not too bad hi cath, i have had a golden shamrock half tonner for the last 4 years. The cockpit layout is great for sailing and trimming. The leeward side is unusable but the wide windward side deck becomes an excellent seating place with plenty of room. The crew pit - forward of the tiller is a fairly safe and secure environment, although not always dry. The layout works well for sailing, however when it comes to marina lounging we are not ones to sit around the cockpit table. However you do get invited on to many other boats. It can be cold, even in the summer. A sprayhood is not practical for our layout, but would be a great improvement if something could be made. if you are in the chichester area, feel free to drop in and have a look and a chat, send me a PM and i will send over my number There is one thing to bear in mind, the boat is built for sailing - it gets you there faster than most and give you more time to relax the other end. Sailing and trimming becomes a joy due to the layout and you are always wanting to race other boats of a similar size, we usually win  

Half-tonners did tend to rely on crew weight to keep them on their feet and I don't think you can entirely forget about weight distribution when cruising. Best bet is just to get the crew to stay on the windward side of the cockpit with their backs against guard rails. There should be an extra 'seat' behind the tiller too for whoever was doing tactics or runners when racing.

Earlier half-tonners, eg She 31 and derivatives, have more conventional cockpit seating. These types can make good cruisers, with good build quality and excellent performance.

My quarter tonner has a very similar cockpit layout, and works fine for most cruising use. Close-hauled and well heeled most people would choose to be on the windward side, but when the boat's flatter there are more options. Boats like the Nichloson half tonner and Golden Shamrock also tend to be quite dry, even going to windward in a blow, so although the cockpit offers less protection than with a She 31, Contessa 32 or similar, that doesn't necessarily equate to getting wetter when you're underway. The wide side decks, and the fact that everything is on just two levels, makes it easy to move around on deck, without having to clamber over seats, coamings etc.

Bit of fred drift but can anyone quickly tell me how the 1/4 ton and 1/2 ton class get their name as i suspect they are a tad overweight!

Most raciing boats from about the 80's onwards were built with no compromise for comfort. They had the bare minimum of facilities down below required by the rules at the time. As for cockpit layout then you will need to sit on the deck on the high side. Be careful if you have small kids who may be nervous. A cruiser with a nice deep cockpit feels much safer for little ones. I found this out with my own little ones, who now won't go near the boat. With a half tonner you will get a lot of boat for your money and you will get to your destination before all the others in more comfortable boats. You will need to be careful with the rig though. I had a 3/4 tonner with frctional rig and running backstays. If someone got the runners wrong the mast would fall down. Gybing could be a nerve racking experience. This can obviously be a bit of a problem for cruising with only a few people on board. As one of the earlier posts said these boats were designed to have a gang of heavies sitting on the rail to keep them on their feet. You can get round this by reefing earlier than you would in a cruiser. As an aside the ton cups started with the one ton cup way back which was raced for yachts with keels weighing one ton. When the idea of a level rating series for IOR boats was started, in the seventies I think, the trophy was dusted off and raced for by boats that all rated the same under IOR. I think it was originally 27.5 feet but I may well be wrong. Later on they expanded the idea to smaller and larger boats so the quarter, half, three quarter and two ton cups were born. Lots of very well known designers first made their names in the IOR level rating arena such as Bruce Farr.
