The new design trends shaping superyacht beach clubs
As the focus of life on board moves closer to the water, the beach club is becoming the highlight, learns Claire Wrathall
Given the extent to which the pandemic has altered human behaviour, as we seek to avoid each other, it’s not surprising that yacht owners have sought sanctuary on their boats. “A yacht is the best place to be completely safe,” says Sabrina Monteleone, founder and proprietor of Sabrina Monte-Carlo , the Côte d’Azur’s go-to supplier of deck furniture, furnishings and table settings. “Owners now want to stay alone on their boats; they no longer go out.”
Even last winter in St Barths, nobody was going ashore to actual beaches, according to Monteleone. “No, your own beach club is the place to be now,” she says. “On a big boat, on the first or second deck, you don’t really sense the water. But on the platform, the water is right there; you can really feel the sea. Whenever we do a refit, the owner wants to increase the platform.”
It comes as no surprise, then, that beach clubs have moved on from the time when they were little more than an aft bathing platform shaded by a raised transom door and backed by the toy garage. Now, she says, “they are more like pool houses”, complete with sofas, armchairs and ottomans, adjoining gyms and spas, and perhaps a bar. These days a beach club is somewhere to spend the whole day, returning upstairs only at mealtimes.
Increasingly, too, the platform will be directly connected to the main deck by a staircase . “Because the main deck is becoming the most important area of the boat,” says Francesca Muzio, co-founder of the Ancona-based practice FM Architettura d’Interni , whose recent projects include the spectacular interiors (designed jointly with Nauta Design ) of the aptly named and soon-to-be-launched 88-metre Feadship Zen designed by De Voogt Naval Architects . She has also observed a change in the way yachts are used. Where once the upper deck was the most important area, she continues, the focus of activity “is moving downstairs”, as owners increasingly request inside-outside spaces “like verandas or loggias” on the main deck.
She partly attributes this to a fear of UV rays. “The sun is the enemy these days,” she says. “People no longer want to be exposed to it.” Rather than gigantic sunpads, they want sheltered outdoor seating areas that are palpably close to the water, possibly filled with greenery and furnished with “couches, rugs, lanterns” and lots of tactile textiles. “You can even find velvets and chenilles and other soft materials suitable for an outdoor marine environment now, so you can really dress it like an interior,” she says. “It’s a very Mediterranean concept.”
Colder climates can equally be allowed for. On the recently refitted 72-metre Damen -built explorer yacht Game Changer , which travels far and wide, the beach club has heating so that it can, in principle, function as a place to sit out even when the boat is in Antarctic or Arctic waters.
These spaces can be equipped for entertainment too. Take the beach club on Severin*s , the 55-metre Baglietto -built superyacht designed by Francesco Paszkowski and launched last year. It has not only a steam shower, but also a 4K-resolution LED wall with an area of about six square metres suitable for video art or screening movies or sports. It’s the creation of audiovisual specialist Videoworks, which also put a retractable 55-inch 4K outdoor television with 180-degree rotation on the yacht’s sundeck that can be viewed either from the lounge or the pool, and a 90-inch cinema screen on the upper deck.
Both Monteleone and Muzio also see beach clubs and decks as opportunities to use bolder colour. “There has to be harmony, and it has to blend with the indoor areas,” says Muzio. “But you can have fun outside. I like to add colour with cushions and towels,” adds Monteleone.
On Olivia , a Russian navy hydrographic survey vessel that was converted into a 69-metre explorer yacht , she used a “very cool” palette of grey, yellow and white on the platform. While on Bold , the 85.3-metre Silveryachts -built expedition yacht designed by her husband, Espen Øino , she chose a vibrant vermilion. Check out the curvaceous armchairs (Smile by Paola Lenti) that stand on the beach club, to which an inflatable platform attaches, so that the yacht’s toys are readily to hand. On Cosmos , which Heesen is due to deliver in 2022, the beach club not only contains a sunken bar but also is sited beneath the seven-metre waterfall-fed glass-bottom pool, so it is lit by sunshine refracted through water.
Launched in 2020 and designed by Luca Dini , 49.7-metre Rossinavi -built LEL is another new yacht with an expansive and versatile beach club, a response to her owner’s brief for “generous open spaces to make the most of the open air and water”. Dini’s solution was to create “an actual terrace overlooking the sea, a pied-à-terre dans l’eau, where nature meets technology”. The partially indoor space, separated from the garage by an automatic door, is spacious enough to store the tender. Lower the side and transom doors and open the louvres, however, and, when furnished, it becomes an elegant and airy room complete with a bar that extends out over the water – the perfect setting for waterside living and entertaining.
For as Muzio notes, clients no longer commission projects with instructions to adhere to “a particular style such as art deco or modern”. What matters more, she says, is their “lifestyle”, how they want to live and where they want to spend time – which tends to be within sight of the sea.

AMAALA Reveals Iconic New Yacht Club Designs
Posted by luxebeat | May 25, 2022 | Announcements , Design & Architecture , Editor's Picks , Featured , Lifestyle , Luxury Industry News , Trending News , Videos |
AMAALA, the ultra-luxury development located along Saudi Arabia’s north-western coast, has revealed its iconic design for the Triple Bay Yacht Club.
Set within the Triple Bay Marina of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Nature Reserve, AMAALA’s new Yacht Club is a keystone development with a captivating free-flowing structure that aims to create a one-of-a-kind meeting point between land and sea
“AMAALA is one of the flagship Saudi Vision 2030 projects and remains central to the Kingdom’s ambition to become a global tourism leader. We anticipate that AMAALA will become an international hub for luxury yachting, and as such, the yacht club required a world-class design, influenced by the surrounding natural elements and Arabic heritage, and underpinned by our commitment to sustainability,” said John Pagano, CEO, AMAALA.
“HKS has created a signature piece of architecture at the heart of Triple Bay, and I look forward to seeing the concept become a globally iconic meeting place for luxury yachting enthusiasts from all over the world.”
Drawing design inspiration from two sets of geometry, HKS first looked to the unique rock formations on the Saudi Red Sea coastline to create the club’s bespoke cantilevered terraces, which echo the natural shape of the surrounding cliffs, eroded over time by wind and sea.
“We were clear from the outset that we wanted to create a building of its place, with the design drawing inspiration from local landscapes and culture, alongside the nature of the marine lifestyle. The team wanted to reimagine the yacht club as a modern concept, a home from home for nautical enthusiasts from all backgrounds, from leisure to elite sport,” said Dan Flower, HKS Design Director and Lead Architect for AMAALA Yacht Club
The second inspiration is drawn from mankind’s relationship with the sea and maritime history. This nautical edge will ensure the building sits seamlessly within the marina as a central hub and focal point.
Alongside the ‘sea meets land’ concept, the design references the concept of a traditional Arabian house with a simple smooth white exterior that is cut back to reveal luxurious metal externally and a rich palette of natural and locally sourced materials internally such as stone, timber and leather.
“AMAALA offers an unparalleled opportunity to shape a new tourism destination, and a new home for yachting on the Red Sea. It is a privilege to be involved as designers of this iconic yacht club, which is a centrepiece for the marina and set to evolve the guest experience,” explained Kevin Underwood, Global Head of Hospitality at HKS.
“We brought together the global expertise of our firm, using our experience of creating luxury destinations to create something truly innovative and contemporary. Sustainability in all aspects is at the heart of our design, seamlessly integrating the building with the stunning mountain and marine landscape of the Red Sea,” he added.
Covering 7,900 sq. m. and set on four levels, the ultra-luxurious club is set to create a home from home for its members whether to do business, relax, entertain or take part in a calendar of yachting events.
Arrival is a key moment for guests by land or by water, with the entrance set within an arch that forms a shaded plaza and frames dramatic views to the Red Sea. The area has a mirrored vaulted ceiling over a star-lit floor which creates an alternative night sky for guests in the evening.
The interior of the club, also designed by HKS, along with the landscaping detail, is as visually stimulating as the exterior, with unparalleled attention to detail to ensure guests remain connected to the landscapes around them. Utilising local materials with a focus on stone, timber and metals, and embracing a luxurious, yet authentic brass champagne colour scheme, the bars, lounges and restaurant blend seamlessly together with an infinity loop-like shape throughout.
Complementing the yacht club’s functions, the 10-hectare basin hosts a 120-berth marina for yachts up to 130m in length, and is designed for both residents and yachting events, regattas and launches. Deepwater superyacht berths, fuel dock and personalised service ensures Triple Bay’s future rating as a destination for visiting superyachts, international regattas and domestic cruising.
Set across 4,155 sq. km. and due to welcome first guests in 2024, Triple Bay spans three natural bays along the coastline. The destination is designed to create a one-of-a-kind global wellness hub and is underpinned by a commitment to sustainable development. The whole development is targeting a minimum LEED Gold standard for environmental sustainability.
Phase One of Triple Bay is on track to complete in 2024. It consists of eight resorts offering upwards of 1,200 hotel keys and will also feature a range of luxury F&B outlets, retail, and leisure facilities.
Work is well underway on-site to progress enabling infrastructure, groundwork, and key assets with more than 1,000 workers already on site. More than 250 contracts have been awarded to date in excess of 5 billion riyals, with nearly one billion riyals awarded in the first quarter of this year alone, as delivery of the project ramps up on site.
A further 1.2 billion riyals is expected to be awarded in the second quarter of the year and an RFP for the Utilities PPP has already been issued to the market, to ensure the development meets its sustainability ambitions. The resort will be off grid, powered solely by renewable energy.
AMAALA is a core component of the Vision 2030 strategy to diversify the economy by enabling rapid growth in the tourism sector. The project is expected to create upwards of 50,000 new direct, indirect and induced jobs for Saudis, as well as upwards of 11 billion riyals to the country’s GDP once fully operational.
About AMAALA
Set in the Prince Mohammad bin Salman Natural Reserve along Saudi Arabia’s north western coast and spanning 4,155 sq. km, the year-round destination features a pristine landscape and diverse natural ecosystems, coupled with a unique and intriguing heritage and local culture.
Designed to evolve and elevate the very best in travel, AMAALA is an ultra-luxury destination and the first global integrated family wellness destination, set to curate transformative personal journeys inspired by arts, wellness and the purity of the Red Sea. State of the art facilities and an attractive year-long events calendar will ensure AMAALA is a distinctive wellness destination worldwide.
Phase One of Triple Bay is well underway and set to complete in 2024. It will consist of eight resorts offering upwards of 1,300 hotel keys and 200 residential units. Over 250 contracts have been awarded to date worth in excess of 5 billion riyals.
Once complete, AMAALA will be home to more than 3,000 hotel rooms across 25 hotels, and approximately 900 luxury residential villas, apartments, and estate homes, alongside high-end retail establishments, fine dining, wellness and recreational facilities.
Sustainability is a cornerstone of AMAALA, which will be powered by 100% renewable energy for which the resulting saving in CO2 emissions to the atmosphere is equivalent to nearly half a million tons each year. The destination will operate with a zero-carbon footprint once fully operational. A Public Investment Fund company and a key contributor to Vision 2030, AMAALA will establish new standards in luxury and wellness.

- The Yacht Club De Monaco…
In this difficult time, azureazure is here for you. We are committed to helping both our readers and the industries that have been most impacted by the pandemic. Until the crisis is over, we will be publishing relevant content alongside our regular stories, which we hope offer you a few moments of escape. We would like to hear from you. The building that houses the Yacht Club de Monaco emulates the shape of classic luxury liners. This masterful work by Pritzker-winner architect Sir Norman Foster —one of the world’s leading names in architecture and design—looks so spectacular that it actually outshines all the vessels moored at the emblematic marina.
Yacht Club de Monaco and Marina.
As we all know, Monaco is identified with the high life: luxury, royalty, the sea, casinos and, of course, the most spectacular yachts. It also boasts one of the most exclusive yacht clubs on the planet: the Yacht Club de Monaco, which opened its doors in 2014. The Club is the epicenter of nautical life in the small Principality and one of the most important in all the Mediterranean for its strategic location and the number of vessels that visit the port on a regular basis.
With a total area of 97,000 square feet, the imposing building has 54,000 square feet of interior space; the rest are semi-covered areas and large terraces plus a series of public spaces for the delight of all members and visitors. Its five floors are connected by the twin aft stairs and an imposing central spiral staircase.
The inviting glass structure offers spectacular views of the marina, harbor, and the Mediterranean. Completing its nautical aesthetic, the fourth level has a retractable canvas roof located on a sort of rigid structure that simulates the boom, which continues to reach the two towering 100-foot tall masts located at the front of the building. The space also boasts 26 docks for larger vessels up to 180 feet long, which make it a formidable and safe harbor for the some of the largest megayachts in the world, which usually spend the summers in the area.
The Yacht Club of Monaco resembles a classic ocean liner.
The Yacht Club de Monaco offers all kinds of luxurious and comfort amenities for its members and visitors, such as restaurants, ballrooms, special event space, public areas and a private club on the first floor. It also has an elegant library with more than 1,600 nautical titles, five guest rooms, gyms and a spectacular pool for a very enjoyable day-visit or a larger stay while sailing the fabled coast of the South of France.
In the surrounding area, there is ample parking for 140 cars. The interior of the building was decorated with delicate elegance and refined touches using Fendi Casa furnishings and materials that evoke luxury liners, such as wood in different textures and shades, polished aluminum and pristine white lacquer. Numerous works of art adorn the halls and the splendid Riva Bar, celebrating the traditional Italian yacht and luxury motorboats manufacturer , is the meeting place for those who enjoy navigation and socializing in one of the most elegant settings in Monaco.
The building is not only beautiful but also modern and environmentally-friendly. It has an elaborate system of photovoltaic panels for electricity generation, as well as a novel and sophisticated cooling system that operates using seawater. Combined, these state-of-the-art resources yield energy savings of 60 percent. ■

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe
Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.
At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.
"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.
James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.
Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .
The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.
The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.
No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.
"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.
The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.
Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.
After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.
The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building
John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.
The majority of the council preferred option one.
Design one:
Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.
"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."
Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.
Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.
Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.
Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.
Design two:
Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.
"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.
He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.
Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.
"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.
Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.
"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.
Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.
Design three:
This would be more contemporary and modern.
"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.
None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.
Inside the new community center
The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.
Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

A logo idea to visually unite yachting and cuisine together. I took a boat's classic anchor, and harmoniously combined it with cutlery. The nautical rope around the composition further reinforces the idea behind the logo, and unites everything together. The wording below is balanced and easily readable. The whole logo works well on both light and dark backgrounds thank to good overall contrast.

AVAILABLE WITH CUSTOMIZATION My concept is a modern and clean negative space logo mark inspired by the yacht beating the waves. Elegant, sharp and curved lines develop feelings of excitement, enthusiasm and adventure. The orange color communicates adventure and risk-taking. By combining physical energy and stimulation of red with the cheerfulness of yellow, it inspires confidence, competition and independence. I paired the logo mark with clean and sharp typography to match the overall style. The softness and of the secondary typography and the circles of the yacht windows makes contrast to the sharp shapes and that makes them stand out.

Culture – Designing The Perfect Yacht Club
At first, the new building of the Yacht Club of Monaco seems to imitate the ocean liners which sailed between Britain and America at the beginning of the twentieth century, now peacefully docked in its marina. The imposing building has 54,000 square feet of interior space, the rest are semi-covered areas and large terraces. Its five floors are connected by the twin aft stairs and an imposing central spiral staircase.
Not surprisingly, the Yacht Club of Monaco offers all kinds of amenities such as restaurants, ballrooms, special event spaces, public areas and a private club on the first floor. It also features a stylish library with more than 1,600 nautical titles, five guest rooms, gyms and a spectacular pool.
