Sailing the Cyclades: Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer

I’ve been fortunate enough to visit Greece a couple of times already over the last few years, spending time in Athens and on honeymooners’ paradise Santorini . However, it wasn’t until my week sailing the Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer route through the Cyclades that I truly fell in love with the country.

If you’ve landed on my blog because you’re looking for a Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review (and you don’t want to read the many itinerary spoilers in the copy below), I can tell you right now that within the first five minutes of arriving on board you’ll realise that you bagged the best yacht charter in Greece. Go ahead and book for next season, it’s not a decision you’re going to regret .

ONE WEEK SAILING THE CYCLADES

Defined by rugged landscapes, ancient archaeological sites, and a healthy peppering of traditional blue-and-white stucco towns that sit atop cliffs aside the Aegean Sea, the islands of the Cyclades are some of the most beautiful in the Greek archipelago . (Something the Instagram-addict inside me was particularly thrilled about when I received my information pack from the Yacht Getaways team.)

DAY ONE PAROS TO ANTIPAROS

Mykonos, Ios, Santorini, there are a number of famous faces amongst the week’s itinerary, and after flying direct into Santorini from London and hopping aboard a Hellenic Seaways ferry to Paros, my week began with a sunset sail to the neighbouring island of Antiparos .

Sailing south from Paros, the late-afternoon breeze propelled us toward the port of Antiparos where we were to moor in the bay for our first night on the water. Host Jo and Skipper Colin used the time to familiarise us with the boat and talk us through the planned route for the week.

There were a couple of potential changes to the itinerary due to heavy winds that were forecast for later in the week, but they were confident that we’d still get to see the majority of the islands, so on we sailed.

A MINI GUIDE TO ANTIPAROS

Often overlooked in favour of its headline-hitting neighbours, Antiparos isn’t known for its nightlife, high-end shops, and island tours. Instead, this central Cycladic hideaway boasts endless white-washed towns, quaint fishing ports, and secluded swimming spots .

On Antiparos, old men sit beneath ancient oak trees playing backgammon while the hippies who found themselves here in the 1970s still run nudist campgrounds. This isn’t an island full of party-going twenty-somethings, although like all traditional Greek communities the Ouzo flows freely every night .

RECOMMENDATION

Restaurant: Kalokeri – fresh, seasonal ingredients are served up in a modern Greek style. Bookings are essential.

DAY TWO ANTIPAROS TO IOS

There’s something magical about waking up on a yacht that’s moored in a quiet bay. First you hear the water gently lapping at the hull, and then as you open the hatch-window that sits above your bed, sunlight and a crisp ocean breeze wake you from your slumbered state .

I’m pretty sure I could easily become a morning person if this was the way the world greeted me every time I woke up.

Leaving Antiparos behind we set sail for neighbouring Ios, an island I was excited to explore as I’d heard there were a number of churches atop a hill offering particularly picturesque views of the harbour .

ONE NIGHT ON IOS

Before my trip I’d seen pictures of Ios on Pinterest. A typically Greek scene the main town (Ios Chora) sits high on a hillside; its cobbled streets a labyrinth of white-edged stones .

Arriving into the port (a short bus ride from the village), we moored up on the key heading, threw some beach-wear in a daypack, and set out to scale the distant peak where a blue-domed church and three other ecclesiastic forms stood proud in the afternoon sun . I knew I’d find a photo-worthy scene at the top so it was first on my list of sights to see.

The Church of Panagia Gremiotissa (the Saint protector of the island) can be seen from almost everywhere in the town of Ios and is easily found by navigating its narrow lanes that ascend the hillside. From the top, views of island and ocean dominate the scene . I was surprised to find we had the site to ourselves and so made the most of the opportunity capturing the perfect Instagram to share the moment with the folks following my trip.

Sundowners: The Octopus Tree – while their tapas style menu is a little on the expensive side (for the portion size offered), I’d highly recommend this port-side spot for a sundowner. Sit, relax, and watch as fishermen haul their catch of the day onto the dock .

DAY THREE IOS TO SKHINOÚSSA, LITTLE CYCLADES

Dropping anchor in a Alimnia Bay on the coast of Iraklia we hit pause on our morning sail out of Ios in favour of a swim stop and a light lunch. For it was here, as Skipper Colin informed us, that the skeleton wreck of a German WWII Arado 196 Seaplane lay at a depth of about 15 metres – see pictures .

Snorkels on we splashed about in the relative shallows for an hour or so, exploring the wreck and SUPing along the shore, before refuelling on fresh pasta and continuing our journey towards the islands of the Lesser Cyclades.

After sailing for the best part of the day and mooring in the small port of Mersíni, we sat on the deck and drank gin and tonics as the late-afternoon light danced across the shore. Then, after a reasonably aerobic  walk up the hill to the charming town of Hóra, I found myself sitting with a cucumber martini in hand, watching the sunset from a balconied restaurant in the hillside .

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

THREE THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SCHINOÚSSA

Relatively untouched by Greece’s insatiable summer tourism trade, Schinoússa sits a little over five kilometres from the southern shores of Naxos and boasts deserted beaches, patchworked landscapes, and quaint fishing towns .

From Hóra you can reach no fewer than sixteen beaches dotted around the island, accessible by a network of dirt tracks.

On a clear day you can see the nearby islands of Santorini and Ios , head to Alygaria Kampos beach for the best chance of a sighting.

Restaurant – Deli – a charming restaurant and cocktail bar, Deli boasts a modern interior and rural vistas from its balconied position overlooking the ocean. Cocktails are expensive, but well worth the splurge .

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

DAY FOUR SCHINOÚSSA TO MYKONOS

The Meltemi Winds sweep across the Greek islands during the late summer and it was on the fourth day of my trip that they made their presence known. Waking up to the sound of the yacht’s engines motoring, I arrived on deck in my PJs to find Skipper Colin at the helm and a palette of ochre tones lighting up the sky.

Still within the relative shelter of the Lesser Cyclades we stopped for breakfast in a deserted bay on the south coast of Naxos and made the most of the opportunity to swim in the clear, clam waters . Our planned route would take us north along the leeward side of Naxos and out into the Aegean Sea where we’d have little protection from the force of the Meltemi, which had picked up and were causing an increasing swell.

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

It’s at this point that I’ll suggest that for anyone who has never sailed on open water, or suffers from motion sickness, a packet of seasickness tablets are a worthwhile purchase regardless of where and when you’re sailing . Mother Nature can be unpredictable and if you’ve got a competent skipper (and an adventurous crew), one tablet could make the difference between an exciting few hours on the water, and a stomach-churning experience you’d rather forget.

Dosed-up and psyched-up we left the comfort of Naxos’ shores and set out on the crossing to Mykonos.  The waves peaked and troughed and my crew-mates snoozed in the galley. I could imagine that, when the water is calm, this part of the route would be a great time to relax on the bow, read a book, and soak up some rays. Fear not, the Meltemi doesn’t stick around all season so you may be lucky and find yourself enjoying the later during your trip .

As we approached Mykonos’ southern coast there was visible relief on everyone’s face. However the previous four hours had not dampened the sense of excitement at the prospect of exploring another new destination.

THE SHIP TO SHORE GUIDE TO MYKONOS

Renowned for its rolling hills, historic windmills, and white-sand beaches, Mykonos has long been a destination for those seeking a vibrant island escape . In the summer months its night-owl culture attracts the international jet-setting crowd, many of whom are beginning to choose Mykonos in favour of other idyllic party islands like Ibiza.

From the New Port, where your yacht will moor on arrival, you have the option of taking a bus (which runs every half an hour until 1am), or water taxi to the Old Port which acts as a gateway to the main town. Here you’ll find water-front restaurants, chic boutiques, and stylish cocktail bars with alfresco street-side seating.

Possibly the island’s most iconic feature however, is the row of windmills that stand overlooking Alefkandra harbour . White-washed and without sails, they stand silently, no longer used to mill wheat their existence now just a reminder of the island’s past.

A post shared by Priesh (@priesh_sp) on Sep 21, 2017 at 11:54am PDT

RECOMMENDATIONS

The windmills are a popular point of interest so if you’re keen to capture a tourist-free photo catch the bus into town for an early morning amble prior to departing the port. Or, if you’re planning to party all night head there for sunrise before you head back to the boat for a snooze.

Restaurant:  Eva’s Garden – tucked away in the back streets of the Mykonos town I stumbled upon this restaurant by pure chance. Simple, classic dishes packed with flavour are served in an alfresco style-indoor garden room hidden away behind the entrance to the restaurant. Try a portion of Mama’s Soutzoukakia, they’re divine.

DAY FIVE MYKONOS TO NAOUSSA, PAROS

With the Meltemi Winds losing power over night, the following afternoon we set sail south towards the island of Paros and the idyllic port town of Naoussa. Thanks to the hefty tail wind and calmer waters I was able to lay out on the deck and catch some Zzzzzs in the ocean air. Mooring in the bay off the coast of Naoussa Skipper Colin taxied us across to the shore where we picked up a cab into town and ate at the effortlessly elegant Barbarossa restaurant on the harbour-front .

With the sun already setting it wasn’t until we returned to the town the following morning that I was able to appreciate its beauty. Hugging the cobbled docks of a small fishing port the alfresco dining rooms of restaurants, bars, and cafes spill out to the water’s edge , creating an almost celebratory atmosphere as people drink and dine throughout the day and night.

Unassuming in its appearance, unlike other places I’ve seen over the last few days, Naoussa doesn’t appear to be trying to create an affluent, sophisticated vibe, it just is.

Restaurant : Barbarossa – This water-front restaurant wraps itself around the northern edge of the harbour and encompasses a picturesque church outside which its dining table sit on cobbled stones. Serving fresh seafood and delicious local wines, the prices aren’t the most practical for budget travellers but the memory of the fresh, island flavours are well worth the price.

DAY SIX – STRANDED IN NAOUSSA

I say ‘stranded’ because the tempestuous Meltemi Winds had returned and our Skipper Colin made the intelligent call to remain moored in the bay after seeing a mega yacht struggle to take on the swell that had whipped up the water over night.

However, finding myself back in Naoussa I didn’t feel like I was being cheated out of exploring Naxos (which was our next planned stop), more like the opportunity was a treat from the Gods who had seen how the town had stolen my heart .

Our Host, Jo, knowing us reasonably well by this point during the week, suggested that we take a walk to a nearby winery where regional and local wines were served up on a tasting menu that included fresh cheeses, meats, and bread . This, along with a leisurely amble through the narrow streets of the town is a must-see sight if you ever find yourself in Naoussa with time to spare.

yacht getaways greece cyclades

A sweet treat: Nonna Crema – for delicious homemade ice creams in traditional and off-the-wall flavours try Nonnas, you wont be disappointed (only open from 6pm).

DAY SEVEN NAOUSSA TO PAROS PORT

Yacht Getaways Greece Explorer review

Arriving back into the port of Paros after a leisurely sail around from Naoussa I felt my heart sink as Skipper Colin tied on to the concrete dock from which we started our adventure. Despite the challenging Meltemi Winds my week aboard was just as delightful as that of my previous Yacht Getaways trip in Croatia last summer .

Incredible landscapes, fantastic food, and great fun with a fabulous mix of people, my week was defined by the skill, hospitality, and humour of Skipper Colin and his First Mate and Host Jo. Without their expert navigation of the islands, picking out the best mooring spots, and sharing recommendations for each new place we visited, my experience wouldn’t have been half as memorable.

From Paros, to Antiparos, Ios, Schinoússa, Mykonos, and back, my time aboard the Greece Explorer has become the most favoured of all my Greek adventures .

HELPFUL ADVICE FOR THE YACHT GETAWAYS GREECE EXPLORER ROUTE

TRAVEL TO PAROS

If you’re on a budget, consider searching for flights to and from nearby airports such as Athens, Santorini and Mykonos, and then check ferry fares to Paros. Inter-island flights can be costly considering the short time you’re in the air.

Remember to factor in the cost of any taxis you may have to take in order to get between airports and ferry terminals. I flew into Santorini airport and picked up a ferry from the island’s port in order to reach Paros. The 12 minute taxi ride cost me €30 one-way.

Similarly, if to you convenience is king, search for fares with connecting flights into Paros airport.

5 PACKING ESSENTIALS

Seasickness tablets

Microfiber towel

Waterproof camera

European adapter for electricals (you can charge electronic when the boat is connected to shore power, and when the engine is on when under way)

Yachting

Greece – Cyclades

Greece boasts some of the world’s most exquisite beaches. Just like the legendary gods who traversed and looked down upon this stunning oasis, you too can enjoy the endless pleasures of the islands with High Point Yachting. With nearly 20 world heritage sites, visiting Greece can be like stepping back in time. Ancient traditions still in use today stretch from religion to food, and with High Point Yachting, you too can have a taste of it. From the fabulous backdrop of your yacht, you can course through the turquoise waters towards the gleaming shores, where endless restaurants offer simple seafood fare to awaken your taste buds and nourish the soul. Cyclades islands are particularly popular with crewed motor yachts, crewed catamarans and since recently, gulets too. Often we suggest one-way charters from Athens to Mykonos or to Santorini, depending on the time of the year. There is an airport on both islands. This area is particularly glorious out of the main summer season (July and August) – June and September are beautiful and less windy. High Point Yachting has access to some fantastic crewed yachts in this area. We inspect them regularly (mostly during the boat show) and work with some of the best teams in the yachting industry.

Santorini

Greece, Cyclades highlights

The Cyclades’ 39 islands are perfect for an island-hopping sailing holiday. Each island has its own character, from cosmopolitan Mykonos to rustic and traditional Santorini.

Greece, Cyclades destinations

The Cyclades are perfect for island hoping, they are an ideal sailing ground. They consist of a lot of diverse islands with differing cultures and landscapes. When thinking about the Cyclades, what comes to mind first are: white-washed cuboid houses, with bright blue shutters, domes church and the odd windmill. But there is a lot more to this area. There are popular islands such as Mykonos, Santorini and Ios, all beautiful and vibrant. Then there are Sifnos, Naxos, Paros, Milos, Sifnos, Polyegos, ideal for out of the main season periods, perfect for foodies, art lovers, admirers of beautiful landscapes. The rest are lesser known islands, some more popular with the Greek tourists, some always quieter, offering different landscape and attractions. Below is one of our area presentations with the places we recommend visiting.

Athens Greece

Where to start when describing the capital city of Greece and all it has to offer? This bustling city has so much to see and do that each neighbourhood has its own unique attractions and character. Explore the cafes you can’t miss in Exarchia, the vibrant nightlife in Gazi and the coolest shopping in Koukaki.

Often referred to as the birthplace of democracy, arts, science and philosophy of western civilisation, Athens is a historian’s dream.  Home of Plato, Socrates, Pericles, Euripides, Sophocles, Aeschylus, Athens is one of the world’s oldest cities. It’s recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. The large selection of Ancient Greek ruins are a must see when visiting. Athens is home to many museums and art galleries, the National Archaeological Museum, for example, has the largest collection of ancient Greek art in the entire country.

Athens is not just for history lovers; it also has several squares such as Monastiraki Square where you will also find a large shopping street to enjoy. Ever heard of  tzaziki ? What about  taramosalata ? You’ll find these and so much more in the city’s endless selection of restaurants.

Loulida village, island of Kea in Greece

Kea or Tzia is considered the ‘gate’ to the Cyclades. The island was named after Ceos, a hero from Nafpaktos who settled on the island in the 12th century BC. Later during the Venetian occupation, it was renamed Tzia.

Despite being part of the Cyclades, Kae stands out from the other islands as you will not see so many white-washed cubic houses or blue-domed churches instead you will fine elegant, neoclassic architecture and earthy colours.

This picturesque island offers natural beauty but also some great little historic spots to visit. Kea played a key part in the flourishing Cyclasic civilization and has been called home by many important figures of ancient Greece, such as the poet Simonides. On the south side of Nikolaos Bay- once a 13th century pirate strong hold – is a small port called Korissia which is definitely worth a visit. From the north-east of Kea town, you can see the famous lion carved from the native rock in the 6th century. This lion is thought to have chased away the island’s former inhabitants, the Nymphs.

If you would rather visit shops and cafes, then Vourkari is the place to go. This small bay has traditional taverns and some small shops to enjoy. For the more adventurous visitor, Kea is a walkers paradise with 36km of walking paths- 65% of them in stone paved paths- taking you through dense forests out to isolated beaches.

Island of Kythnos, Cyclades, Greece

Kythnos or Thermaiam (with its warm baths) is an understated beauty- a holiday destination out of the ordinary. Known as approachable, friendly and a joyfully hospitable place to visit, Kythnos is the perfect place for those wanting to step away from their hectic lives and relax whilst also discovering the island’s history, geography and culture.

The island is blessed with 65 impressive sandy beaches. The most impressive being Kolóna where a lane of sand connects the beach with the islet of Avios Loukas to Kýthnos. Once you have explored the beaches head inland and follow paths that connect each village together; ensure you take in the narrow-cobbled streets, white houses, village squares and the beautiful chapels and windmills. For a truly unforgettable experience, walk to the Katafýki cave, tasting apricots and wild mulberries on your way, and explore one of Greece’s biggest caves with its stalactites and stalagmites!

No one can visit Kythnos and not take a dip in the island’s famous hot springs- the only hot springs in the Cyclades. The thermal springs are located in the village Loutra that owes its existence to the springs. Two hot springs can be found there: Agioi Anargyroi, which is located indoors in the area of the spa, and the outdoor spring of Kakavos.

To really get to know the true Kythnos, we suggest getting to know the locals. The welcoming 1,500 inhabitants on Kythnos have a fantastic culture which they love to share with visitors. They have year-round festivals, the most famous being Agia Triads in Apostoli on 28 June in Dryopida and Panagia Kanala and Panagla Nlkous on the 15 August.

This island has a lot to offer those that visit.

Island of Syros, Greece

Syros is located in the very heart of the Cyclades, 83 nautical miles off the Port of Piraeus and 62 nautical miles off the Port of Rafina. Syros is the island where visitors can see the western influence mixed alongside Greek tradition! Ermoupoli is the capital of Syros and all islands of the Cyclades. It developed during the War of Independence and soon became a large transit centre between the East and the West. This once trading hub, now boasts neoclassical houses and beautiful squares; Posidonia being a great area to demonstrate this.

Culture comes in abundance on the Island of Sýros. Throughout the year there are internationally acclaimed festivals such as The International Cyclades Music Festival, the Classical Music Festival, the Ermoupólia and the Musical May. There will be something for everyone’s musical tastes.

For food lovers, Sýros is well-known for its gastronomic peculiarities! Halva pie (a pie made of thyme honey and roasted almonds), loukoúmi (a delight made of water, starch and sugar), “loosa” ham, fennel sausages and the San Mihalis spicy cheese are just a few of the delicacies to try during your visit.

Away from the bustling towns, the country offers great cycling routes. Hire bikes and explore the smaller towns and beaches. For more of a thrilling wheeled experience, the northern side of Syros offers jeep tours on the dirt roads. Alternatively enjoy a calming walk- we recommend the northern side of the island as it is full of paths to explore. The great number of beautiful beaches will delight the sea and sand lovers: Vári, Foínikas, Yalissás and Kíni.

Syros really does have it all!

Mykonos, Greece

Mykonos, one of the most popular Cyclades islands, is known as a cosmopolitan and luxurious holiday destination. It’s beach bars, clubs, high end shops and art venues draw people in from across the globe. However, Mykonos has another side to show. It is also particularly picturesque, with stone-paved alleys, whitewashed houses, country chapels and windmills, that ooze calm and peace. This variety is what makes Mykonos so special and we are not the only ones who believe this; many famous stars visit or live on the island!

Mykonos has a host of attractions to visit. We recommend that you visit Church Paraportiani, a well-known unique architectural complex of five chapels. This Mykonos icon is located at Chora. There are also plenty of museums to engage any visitor of any age: the Archaeological Museum, the Aegean Maritime Museum and the Folklore Museum are the most well known.

After a busy day exploring Mykonos, enjoy the culinary delights the island has to offer. The Mykonos cuisine includes many varieties of pork dishes (with cabbage or wild greens, smoked pork, sausages) and wonderful recipes for fish and seafood: sea snail casserole or risotto, mackerel with capers, sea urchins in vinaigrette, clams, mussels. To accompany your meal, try a cool soumada, a drink made using almonds. If sea food is your favourite, try to plan your trip to Mykonis so that you don’t miss the celebration of Agii Apostoli which coincides with the celebration of fishermen. This festival is held on the 30th of June and to celebrate, a large feast is organized on the beach of Chora, where seafood is served.

Paros, Greece

Paros is one of the largest and most fertile islands of the Cyclades with valleys, plains and farmland. The island of Paros is famous for its golden beaches, clear blue waters and nightlife. However, it is much more dimensional than that. Rich in natural resources, cultural heritage, unique customs, traditional dishes and famous wine, this island has much to offer anyone that visits.

To explore the island’s culture, we recommend a visit to Parikia, the port and capital of the island. Parikia is an area of exceptional religious, archaeological and cultural importance. Once there, you can see the famous church of Panagia Ekantotapyliani (4th century), a magnificent monument to Christianity and one of the most important Early Christian monuments of Greece. In contrast to the bustling town of Parkia, visit the village of Lefkes a beautiful and unspoiled settlement- the only mountain settlement in Paros. Picturesque, calm and amphitheatrically built among lush greenery, it preserves its traditional character. No motor vehicles are allowed which results in a beautifully peaceful visit. From here, you can also follow the byzantine marble path that leads to the medieval village of Prodromos which is about an hours walk away.

For nature lovers, we recommend you seek out the Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes) a lush green habitat that provides shelter for Tiger moth butterflies. This is open to visitors to try their luck at spotting one.

Finally, no trip to Paros would be complete without trying some of Paros’s famous cheeses, and wonderful wines (labeled PDO=Protected Designation of Origin). If your visit coincides with the grape harvest, visitors can join in crushing of grapes and rakidl whilst also involving themselves in the accompanying festivities.

Sifnos village

Beautiful Sifnos, is a barren and remote island in the most southern Cyclades. Everything there feels so simple yet the food is highly sophisticated and the wine is superior. It’s a place where bouhainvillea comes in the brightest red and the hottest pink and hangs over the white washed houses and blue shutters. This is a romantic island with a peaceful feel to it. A place where the sunsets are magical and where one wonders the streets in the evening, browsing galleries and shops before settling down for the Sifnos’ signature dishes.

Sifnos, the birthplace of many famous chefs such as Tselementes and Markou, offers a wide selection of very tasty dishes, such as the revithokeftedes (chick pea croquettes), ambelofassoula (string beans) with skordalia (garlic paste) and kaparosalata (caper salad).

POLYEIGOS anchorage

Polyaigos (Polivos) is an exotic paradise. The colours and the feeling it offers are unforgettable! Its remarkableness is mainly due to it being the largest uninhabited island of Greece and one of the largest uninhabited islands in the Mediterranean Sea. This gem of an island is only reachable by private boat.

The island has great geological and ecological importance since it is home to rare or even endangered endemic species. Species such as the Mediterranean seal, adders, lizards, falcons and 32 endemic, rare or even endangered species of plants. For its significant ecological value Polyaigos has been incorporated to the network of Natura.

This natural, mainly undisturbed island offers a host of beautiful beaches. The most famous beaches are located in the bays of Kato and Ano Mersini. One of them is the “Blue Bay” beach which looks a little like an amphitheatre with white rocks around the sea and with deep blue water.

This island is the perfect place to take in Mother natures natural beauty.

Island Milos, Greece

Milos is one of a kind! It is a divine Cycladic island with three unique characteristics: the volcano, the catacombs and its distinct fauna! A volcanic island with spectacular geological and rock formations and exceptional beaches with turquoise waters. It has one of the best harbours in the Mediterranean, formed when the sea broke into the crater through a gap on its north-west side. Today these geologic formations are the perfect place for swimming and exploring.

When visiting Milos, one must visit the the Catacombs of Milos. They  are considered to be the most important early Christian monument of worship and burial site in all of Greece. Over 2000 Christians were buried in the catacombs whose tombs were decorated with plants and symbols. This is a must see when visiting.

To discover more of the island’s culture and history see out Chivadolimni, a beautiful area whose name was influenced by a lake (limni in greek) whose bottom was covered with clams. This is where the oldest church on the island is located, Panagia Kipou, as well as camping grounds. The beach of Chivadolimni is also ideal for windsurfing.

Finally, Milos’ moon-like landscape at Sarakiniko are worth a visit with its white smooth rocks.

Serifos, Greece

Serifos Island, with its rugged mining sites, has its own distinct Cycladic flair. With it’s arid and wild landscapes, Serifos stands out from its neighbouring islands.

On your travels a visit to the town of Chora is highly recommended. This town has been built onto a rocky hill and can be seen from the docks. There are two parts to this town Pano (meaning upper) Chora and Kato (meaning lower) both connected by a stairway. You’ll find some bars, cafés and taverns in the town’s narrow streets. It is worth taking a 10 minutes walk up to the Venetian castle, built in the 15th century, to drink in the view of the blue sea!

Livadi , the main port on Serifos, is another great place to explore. Enjoy the nearby cafés, fish tavernas and pastry shops located next to the seashore. This area has a beautiful sandy beach but is also very close to Avlomonas and Livadakiabeaches. Serifos offers sandy, peddly and rocky beaches around the island.

Serifos’ cuisine bursts with aromas and flavours! On your vacation here don’t miss the delicious meat products such as louzes, syglina (traditional cured pork) and sausages, as well as the islands rich aromatic spices. Taste marathopites and marathotiganites (fennel pies baked or fried), revythada (traditionally cooked chickpeas) with a local variety of raisins, sun-dried octopus, local cheeses such as myzithres and xinomyzithres. Make sure to accompany your meal with the island’s local wines.

Apart from having a laid back and relaxed holiday, you you also have the option of being active and enjoying sports such as hiking, climbing, mountain biking and diving!

Guide to the Cyclades Islands

A diverse and enchanting travel experience

Famed for their glittering islands and sparkling azure waters, it is no wonder that the Cyclades are the most popular charter destination of the Greek Islands. Brimmed with sugar-hued buildings, blue-domed Byzantine churches and glorious golden beaches, it is difficult to resist the allure of this breathtaking East Mediterranean archipelago.

This naturally beautiful archipelago sits in the centre of the Aegean Sea. The name Cyclades stems from the Greek word kÍiklos meaning “circle”, as the islands are formed in a ring around the ancient Island of Delos . Every year the Cyclades beckon more and more visitors to their sun-drenched islands, each unique in character though steeped in Grecian charm. A luxury yacht charter is the perfect way to explore the secluded anchorages for those looking to wind down in ultimate serenity. With small remote islands offering unparalleled privacy and larger islands ripe with opportunities for activity, the Cyclades have something to please every visitor.

The main islands within this enthralling cluster are Mykonos, Paros, Naxos, Delos and of course the favoured Santorini to name but a few.

Santorini An undoubted favourite of the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is a boutique gem steeped in resplendent treasures and astounding natural beauty. Often popular amongst honeymooners, Santorini is arguably one of the most romantic destinations in the world. From dazzling sunsets, intimate seafront restaurants and intriguing cliff-top towns, Santorini is saturated in elegance. Boasting spectacular landscape views this volcanic island is blessed with opulent sandy beaches and local vineyards for a sumptuous vacation of ultimate relaxation.

Mykonos Often dubbed as the ‘party island’ of the Cyclades, Mykonos is an energetic neighbour of the serene Santorini. Radiating a tangible buzz day and night, Mykonos pulsates with vibrant nightlife and designer fashions. The cosmopolitan lifestyle and rustic traditional villages lace this flamboyant island with stunning sandy beaches and enthralling towns to be explored. Mykonos is the beating heart of the Cyclades and not to be missed for those looking for a vacation brimmed with life.

Paros and Ios Paros is an idyllic location for sun worshippers and avid fishermen in addition to offering excellent water sports opportunities. The seaside village of Naoussa boasts stunning picturesque views and is an unmissable stop. Ios exudes more of the party atmosphere and is reputed to be the go to place for youthful party goers and lively crowds though pretty swimming beaches offer peace and quiet for the more subdued.

Folegandros and Delos The picture perfect island of Folegandros is home to some of the prettiest villages in all of the Aegean Sea with sugar-hued buildings lining the streets and stunning island harbours there is no wonder that this small island has been donned as the ‘Island of Peace’. With a simple and relaxing ambiance, the Folegandros Island has become a fashionable destination. The Island of Delos is the uninhabited centre of this archipelago brimmed with unmissable archaeological artefacts. Take a walk along the ‘Avenue of Lions’ and revel in the soothing lifestyle which couldn’t be further from the lively modernity of some of the other islands, making for the ultimate escape.

Naxos, Siros and Tinos The largest of the Cyclades, Naxos is relatively flat and renowned for its soft beaches and lush greenery with pretty swimming spots and winding valleys. The medieval islands of Siros and Tinos are still entrenched with a distinctly local flavour.

Andros, Milos, Sifnos, and Kithnos Home to copious museums, scenic sea caves and some of the finest beaches, Andros and Milos are steeped in history and culture. Sifnos boasts an eclectic blend of Cycladic architecture and atmospheric towns whereas Kithnos is saturated in natural beauty and a tranquil mood. With so much on offer, it's worth getting in touch with your preferred charter broker to identify which islands best suit your particular needs. Likewise, be sure to take a look at all of the superyachts available for rent in Greece .

One of the many enchanting groups of islands surrounding Greece is the Cyclades group, so named because the islands form a cycle around the sacred land of Delos. The proximity of the islands to one another permits a relaxed sailing schedule, allowing more time for sightseeing and shopping.

Best known for their history, art, and civilization which dates back to the Bronze Age, the islands offer a stunning variety of scenic shores, unpsoiled beaches, local handicrafts, entertaiment, and diving.

Best for experienced sailors. An archipelago of more than 30 islands, large and small stretching out to the south of Attica and Euboia, the Cyclades are the 'pearls' of the Aegean. White-washed houses, numerous blue-domed churches, small tavernas with local wine and food, picturesque fishing harbours, are considered the most typical part of Greece. Sail to the charming island of Kea with its small village perched atop the harbour. Continue south to Kythnos, then east and visit the island of Syros. Don't forget to stop in famous Mykonos with its white-washed buildings and trendy clubs. Sail south to Naxos, Ios and Paros, where you will pass in the shadows of white chalk cliffs. Paros is an island of plantations, palm trees and historic monasteries. Also be sure to check out the great beach cafιs. Naxos boasts of windmills, churches and the remnants of the Temple of Apollo. Don't miss the opportunity to arrange a day trip to Santorini, often called the most beautiful island in the Aegean. Take a gondola up to the top for an unforgettable view. In Sifnos, anchor in the port with two charming cliffside villages. Sail to Serifos past a rocky coast cut with deep coves and great beaches. Here, you can walk among ancient stone formations that resemble human figures. Sail to Milos, Ios, Folegandros, Kythnos, each individual island surprises you with its own character and beauty, make your choice of itineraries unlimited. Wind and Sailing Conditions The prevailing wind in the summer is the so called "Meltemi", which comes from the North. The Meltemi peaks in the middle of July until end of August at force 5-7 and may occasionally reach force 9. During spring and autumn, you may also be facing winds blowing from the south. It is advised that for short charters (e.g. 7 days) the charterer should be aware in advance of the prevailing weather conditions since local winds in summer can reach force 8-9 and last for some days. Travel Notes You may begin your trip from our bases in Athens, Alimos Marina, or Lavrion (Main Port) which is situated an hour by car from the new Athens International Airport at the southeast coast of Attica.

Are you daydreaming about a sailing getaway in Greece? We just came back from an incredible journey with Yacht Getaways a premiere sailing company in Europe and are so excited to share our whole itinerary day by day plus all our favorite restaurants and the must-do’s in the Cyclades Islands.

The Cyclades Islands are a group of islands located in the Aegean Sea , situated to the southeast of the mainland of Greece. Each island has its own unique charm and character, attracting tourists from around the world. Yacht Getaways offers an exclusive vacation experience centered around chartering and cruising on a private catamaran with a bunch of friends & family. If you charter the whole catamaran, you can often customize your itinerary, deciding when and where to sail, anchor, and explore. This flexibility allows for a more personalized and intimate vacation experience. Learn more about how it works here.

If you can’t convince your friends & family to join, you can simply rent out one of the cabins and share the boat with like-minded strangers . So instead of staying in traditional accommodations like hotels or resorts, you are able to rent a private room on one of their catamarans, for a defined period, typically ranging from a few days to a week .

The level of luxury depends on your preferences and budget. Choose between the Superior Class and the Prestige Class . For your reference, we embarked on the Superior Class and though it is a bit smaller and more basic than the Prestige Class, we loved every minute of it. Sometimes less is more and let’s be honest, most of our time we spent either in the water or exploring new islands. Both catamarans are equipped with great amenities to provide a lavish experience including a p rivate bathroom and a crew of two to attend to your every need, which includes your host who also prepares divine meals twice a day, and your skipper, the captain of the boat, who makes sure you get to all of the destinations safe & sound.

This exclusivity adds to the allure of the experience. For more reasons why you should embark on a sailing read our blog 6 Reasons Why You Should Sail Through Greece With Yacht Getaways

The Islands You will Visit on the Greece Paros Explorer

Map of Greece Paros Explorer Trip with Yacht Getaways

Island: Paros

Between Santorini and Mykonos sits the rather quiet and underrated island of Paros. Naoussa & Parikia are the two most popular travel destinations on the island. The island’s capital, Parikia, is the main port of Paros and the starting point for your trip with Yacht Getaways . It is the perfect destination because it caters to both those seeking tranquility and those eager to explore the island’s vibrant atmosphere.

We took the fast-speed ferry from Mykonos to Paros and arrived directly in Parikia, Paros. If you have the luxury of time then we recommend coming a day or two earlier to explore this part of Paros in more detail before embarking on your 7-day sailing excursion.

Meander through the cobblestone streets adorned in bougainvillea flowers and get lost amongst the dreamy white buildings that add to this Greek Islands charm. The town is also home to important historical sites like the Panagia Ekatontapiliani Church , often referred to as the Church of 100 Doors.

The island offers a mix of traditional and modern elements, with its charming white-washed houses and narrow streets. The waterfront of Parika is worth exploring as it is lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it a pleasant place to stroll and enjoy the sea breeze. We recommend making a dinner reservation at SALAIR, a stunning rooftop restaurant & bar with breathtaking sunset views over the ocean. SALAIR is an all-day Mediterranean Japanese Restaurant located on the rooftop of Oasis Hotel. Since the hotel is located right at the Parikia Port, this is also a great place to stay should you arrive a few days before the start of your cruise.

Another adorable restaurant we recommend in Paros is the DIONYSOS Garden Restaurant . The restaurant sits in a shaded Neoclassical courtyard and serves delicious, modern Greek dishes.

The cabin of the Yacht Getaways catamaran on the Greece Paros Explorere Trip shot by The Nomadic People

The meeting point might change but ours was at Oasis Hotel, a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a cold beverage while waiting for everyone to arrive. Your skipper will collect you right in front and guide you to your catamaran. Oasis Hotel is also a great and affordable hotel to book should you decide to arrive in Paros a day or two prior.

We climbed aboard our intimate catamaran and met our host Carmel, as well as the other guests on the tour. We loved our little cabin, the rooms were clean and cozy, but be prepared, there isn’t much space in the cabins for big suitcases. We were actually able to store our bigger suitcases at the hotel we were staying at prior to our departure, free of charge. We managed to only bring our carry-ons and were quite happy with that decision. The cabin provides a small closet space to hang a few shirts as well as enclosed shelving for folded pieces but that’s about it.

However, if you do decide to bring your bigger suitcases there is storage at the front of the boat and the crew is happy to find a safe space to keep your suitcases.

After a brief introduction to the boat, the itinerary, and safety, we started our journey to our first stop for the night: Naoussa in the North of Paros.

The port of Naoussa Greece shot by The Nomadic People

Naoussa is such a vibe, a picturesque fishing village, that exudes a relaxed ambiance and offers a delightful escape into narrow alleys and seafront tavernas. This small town was one of our favorite stops along our sailing trip and a place we wish we had more time to explore.

There is only so much one can do in one evening on the island, but it was definitely a nice teaser experience since the boat only docks for one night it’s often hard to explore more than the area around the harbor. We definitely would love to come back here one day and spend some more days meandering through the adorable cobblestone streets. Some places carry this energy within them that can’t be explained, Naoussa is definitely one of them.

For dinner, we would recommend dining at Luaz , a culinary delight in Paros and one of the best restaurants in Naoussa! Luaz boasts a romantic courtyard but also dreamy oceanfront seating. While there is no bad seat in this restaurant, I would always prefer a table with a direct few of the sunset. Definitely make sure to make a reservation in advance, they are pretty popular and likely to book out. But no worries, Naoussa has a lot of cute restaurants located right by the water providing a unique dining experience. After dinner, climbed up to Faneromeni (Panagía) Church and watched the remainder of the sunset.

The best restaurants in Naoussa

Day 2: Naoussa (Paros) - Naxos

Island: naxos.

Naxos, the largest and most diverse island in the Cyclades archipelago, is a collection of ancient wonders, sun-soaked beaches, and authentic Greek hospitality. As you step onto its shores, you’re welcomed by the timeless allure of Chora, the capital of the island of Naxos. The first place we stumbled up upon was 520 Cocktail Bar & Restaurant, located right by the harbor this intimate rooftop restaurant provides stunning views of the Marina and is within walking distance of the catamaran. It is a great place to grab some lunch, coffee or even a drink .

From afar you’ll quickly spot the grandeur of the Temple Of Apollo, an ancient marble doorway that whispers tales of myth and legend.  This popular sight should not be missed and is the most picturesque during sunset.

The Nomad Beach Club in Naxos Greece shot by The Nomadic People

For sun-seekers and beach enthusiasts, Naxos presents a paradise of golden sands and crystalline waters . We actually ended up renting a scooter and spent half of our afternoon at Tortuga Beach Bar & Restaurant , where we rented two beach chairs for 30 Euros. However, we did realize that there are a bunch of free beach chairs just a few minutes away.  Dotted along the endless stretch of coastline, you will find a great selection of beach bars & restaurants inviting you to bask in the Mediterranean sun and lose yourself in the rhythm of the waves. For a slightly more alive atmosphere, we recommend getting a chair at Nomad Naxos.

Venturing into the island’s interior reveals a verdant landscape dotted with olive groves and traditional villages. Apeiranthos , with its narrow streets and stone houses, offers a glimpse into the island’s rich cultural tapestry. Time seems to slow down here, allowing you to savor the simplicity and warmth of Greek island life.

Flamingo Restaurant Naxos Greece shot by The Nomadic People

As the sun sets, Naxos comes alive with the aroma of local cuisine wafting through the air. Tavernas and seaside restaurants beckon with the promise of culinary delights, from fresh seafood to traditional Greek dishes prepared with love and authenticity. We highly recommend making a reservation at AVATON 1739 to watch the sunset. This was probably one of my favorite places during our trip to Naxos, but I have a weakness for open-air places with stunning views.

We always like to experience as much as possible so we only ended up getting drinks at AVATON 1739   but they also serve food so feel free to stay for dinner. We decided to end our date night at Flamingo   and we are glad we did. Located on a rooftop right by the Marina, this is a great place to enjoy some traditional Naxian food while listening to traditional Greek music. This place is also known for its traditional plate smashing …. I don’t even know how to explain it. You will just have to go and experience it for yourself but it doesn’t get much more Greek than dining at Flamingo Restaurant.

Naxos isn’t just an island; it’s an immersive journey through time and culture, where ancient history meets modern charm. Whether you’re exploring archaeological wonders, lounging on sun-drenched beaches, or savoring local flavors, Naxos invites you to surrender to its enchanting embrace—a true Greek island odyssey that lingers in the heart long after you’ve left its shores.

Island: Ano Koufonisi

The day was a dream—setting sail early from the harbor, pausing for lunch, and a refreshing swim in a bay south of Naxos. The highlight was Rhina Cave, a fascinating spot explored on paddleboards . Although not too deep, the cave’s interior darkens as you venture further inward. After a rejuvenating nap and some pleasant sailing, we dropped anchor at Ano Koufunisi island.

The port of Ano Koufonisi shot by The Nomadic People

Ano Koufonisi, though petite, is renowned for its captivating beaches and the unparalleled clarity of its waters. The ocean’s hues around this little gem are absolutely mesmerizing. It’s no wonder the island is celebrated for its picturesque shores, including Pori Beach, Fanos Beach, and Italida Beach. With their white sands and turquoise waters, these beaches offer a slice of paradise. However, some may require a transfer as they’re not all conveniently within walking distance.

Kim sitting at Kyma Cafe in Ano Koufonisi The port of Ano Koufonisi shot by The Nomadic People

Ano Koufonisi, in contrast to some bustling of its Cycladic counterparts, offers a serene and less crowded escape, creating a tranquil ambiance. Given its small size, the island encourages a leisurely pace—whether you choose to unwind on the catamaran or venture ashore for a light snack or refreshing drink at one of the quaint cafes. Kyma Cafe situated by Ammos Beach , captured our hearts with its all-day charm. Picture yourself seated at the water’s edge, savoring delightful views—an ideal kickoff for a peaceful afternoon on this quiet island.

As you meander inland and ascend a gentle slope, you’ll discover narrow alleys winding through charming, traditional whitewashed houses adorned with vibrant bougainvillea.

How to spend the perfect afternoon in Ano Koufonisi

  • Get a drink at Kyma Cafe , an all-day cafe bar right by the beach
  • Soak up the sun at Ammos Beach and take a swim in the azul blue waters of Ano Koufunisis Island
  • Enjoy mesmerizing sunset views from atop the island at Mylos or TZET . Both places are perfect for enjoying a few handcrafted cocktails
  • Get dinner at Mikres Cyclades , an authentic local restaurant offering divine Greek food with a modern twist. Have your skipper call the restaurant to make a reservation for dinner, the place is really good and it is not a secret.
  • Don’t forget to end your night with delicious ice cream from Fystiki Koufonisi . This is hands down the best ice cream on the island located right next door to Mikres Cyclades.
  • If you are still up for it head to Sorokos , another great lively oceanfront bar

Day 4: Ano Koufunisi - Schoinoussa

Island: schinoussa.

Today’s itinerary featured a delightful pit stop at the serene Leonidas Bay in Kato Koufonisi , for a quick morning swim and breakfast. After indulging in a few hours of relaxation, paddleboarding, and swimming in the mesmerizing crystal-clear waters of this peaceful lagoon, we set sail for Schoinoussa.

Being on the water for the past four days has been nothing short of magical. The ocean breeze has captured our hearts, and waking up each day to embark on a new adventure to a different island has become our reality. The journey is not just about the destinations but the joy of sailing, the anticipation of exploration, and the enchantment of the island life. Each moment, from serene lagoons to thrilling water activities, contributes to weaving together this fantastic experience in the sea. As we continued our voyage to Schoinoussa, we eagerly awaited the next chapter of this enchanting adventure.

We arrived at Tsigouri Bay in the early afternoon and had the rest of the day to explore the island of Shinouissa. Our skipper transported us with a dinghy right to the shores of Tsigaouir Beach, a beautiful wind-protected beach on the south of the island.

The streets of Schinoussa Greece The port of Ano Koufonisi shot by The Nomadic People

Schinoussa remains off the beaten path compared to some of the more popular Cycladic destinations due to its small size and lesser-known status. The charm of this island lies in its simplicity, natural beauty, and the genuine hospitality of its residents. It’s a destination that allows you to step back from the hustle and bustle, immerse yourself in the essence of Greek island life, and create memories of a truly authentic experience. This contributes to its peaceful and authentic ambiance, truly a place where time seems to slow down.

When it comes to dinner options on the island, there are a few choices to consider.  Captain Cook Restaurant is conveniently located just a few steps from the beach, providing easy access. However, if you’re up for a bit of an uphill walk, there are other tavernas worth exploring. The effort is rewarded with the charm of Schinoussa’s quiet streets.

Our choice for dinner was Deli Restaurant & Cocktail Bar. This establishment offers a cute downstairs area, perfect for a casual coffee or drink. For a more exquisite dining experience, we headed upstairs to a beautiful restaurant with stunning sunset views overlooking the ocean. Venturing up to the quiet streets of Schinoussa proved to be the right decision, making the evening meal a memorable part of our island exploration. The little town really only started to come alive once the sun set behind the horizon. On our way back to the Marina we noticed that the small village slowly started to wake up, all of a sudden the restaurants started to fill up and local artists were displaying their work on the side of the narrow streets that made up the center of the town.

Day 5: Schoinoussa - Ios

Island: ios.

In an effort to avoid the crowds, we made the decision to leave Schinoussa early in the morning and head towards Alimia Bay on the Island of Iraklia for breakfast. The bay, known for its calm waters and natural beauty, offers a unique ambiance. However, what truly distinguishes Alimia Bay is the historical significance attributed to the plane wreck submerged beneath its surface.

Over time, this underwater relic has transformed into a captivating attraction. The juxtaposition of the serene bay and the historical artifact creates a compelling narrative, bridging the peaceful present with a reminder of the island’s history during World War II.

Following some snorkeling and exploration of the shipwreck, our next destination was Ios. Ios is not only known for its beaches and nightlife but also for its cultural and historical sites.

A list of the must-dos on Ios

Agia Irini Church in Ios Greece shot by The Nomadic People

1. Agia Irini Church: The pristine Agia Irini church is the first impression of the island once you enter the port. Nestled to the south of Ios Bay, the church is an eyecatcher and impossible to miss with its whitewashed facade.

The blue domed churches of Ios Greece shot by The Nomadic People

2. Chora (Ios old town): This is the heart of Ios, a charming village on the hill adorned with its white-washed buildings, narrow streets, and lively atmosphere. The labyrinth of alleys is lined with shops, cafes, and bars. Bougainvillea gracefully covers doors and windows, creating a picturesque scene. The first thing that stood out the minute we got off the bus was the beautiful whitewashed Church of Ios. I will never get sick of blue domes.

The windmills of Ios Greece shot by The Nomadic People

3. Windmills of Ios: The traditional windmills in Ios are located at the top of Chora and stand as timeless sentinels, enhancing the island’s picturesque charm with their iconic presence. From the windmills, you can enjoy a splendid view of Ios village and witness an enchanting sunset. We recommend enjoying dinner at The Mills , serving traditional Greek food since 1969. The restaurant embraces the rich traditions of Greek cuisine, while occasionally adding a modern twist. Renowned for its signature clay-cooked moussaka, spit-roasted lamb, and flambé saganaki, the restaurant also delights in offering grilled calamari and wholesome Greek salads crafted from the freshest ingredients.

4. Enjoy the Beach:

Mylopotas Beach is a short 15-minute drive from the port and a quick ride on the local bus. Known for its golden sand and crystal-clear waters it is one of the most popular beaches on the island, perfect for both relaxation and water activities.

Definitely plan on having dinner at Salt Restaurant & Bar if you are planning on heading to Mylopotas Beach for the afternoon.

If you rather spend a lazy afternoon drinking local Ios wine, eating freshly caught fish, octopus and local dishes as the blue Aegean waters then make sure to dine at Drakos Tavern , one of Ios’s best-kept secrets.

Another much closer option is Paralila Gialos Beach, located 6 min walking distance from the port. Here you can rent sunbeds for around $10.

5. Eat Out:

Katogi Tavern – an inviting Greek Tapas Restaurant, and supposedly one of the best restaurants on the island. La Buca – this family-owned business offers the perfect combination of Italian flavors with Greek cuisine, recipes that are passed down from generation to generation amidst a romantic atmosphere. Allo Bar (Tapas style) –  this restaurant is located close to the port you can walk to this restaurant right from your catamaran. With good food and live music, this  perfect place to eat out at night in Ios. Ios Club – one of the best and dreamiest sunset dining bars on the island and most likely where you want to be to watch the sunset if you don’t feel like partying. Alma Sunset – another beautiful place to enjoy a romantic sundowner with your partner or friends. Expect mesmerizing sunset views overlooking Ios while indulging in some wine & tapas.

6. Explore the Nightlife: The island is full of clubs & bars. The hot spot for nightlife is right in the heart of the old town.

Barmacy – this is one of the few places on the island where you can find deep house & techno. The interior is such a vibe with mushroom murals lit by black light. Pathos Sunset Club and Restaurant – situated in the western part of Ios Island, this club offers an enchanting blend of great music, crafted cocktails, and an eclectic menu featuring gourmet recipes and sushi. The venue comprises a lounge bar, a restaurant, a swimming pool, and breathtaking sunset views. Throughout the summer season, the lineup of DJs is carefully curated at Pathos, making it a hotspot for those who love dancing and partying into the night. FarOut Beach Club – located by Mylopotas Beach and this club is the ultimate party destination of Ios Island . Make sure to check their schedule to see what shows they have lined up during your visit. SUSH Bar – this bar is a little different to what we are used to. It is a silent disco bar in right in the heart of the Chora. Before you go inside, you get a pair of headphones with 3 settings, each streaming a different music genre from House, R&B, and top 40s.

7. Homer’s Tomb: The island is believed to be the final resting place of Homer, the ancient Greek poet. Here at his burial site you can sit in peace and enjoy the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea.

8. Odysseas Elytis Theater: An open-air theater that hosts various cultural events, including concerts and performances. The Odysseas Elytis Amphitheatre stands proudly at the pinnacle of Chora, situated behind the iconic whitewashed windmills.

Day 6: Ios - Antiparos

Island:   antiparos.

Antiparos was our favorite stop during our 7-day journey with Yacht Getaways through Greece . Just a skip away from its more well-known counterpart Paros, Antiparos beckons travelers with its unspoiled beauty and laid-back charm. There was just something so charming and inviting about this place, the cutest designer shops all with such talented artisans, the multitude of delicious restaurants, and all of the bougainvillea covering the whitewashed walls.

Since we didn’t have a lot of time on the island, we just did what we know how to do best, eat! Despite its small size, Antiparos has a very vibrant culinary scene. Below you can find 3 of our favorite restaurants in Antiparos.

Kalokeri Restaurant in Antiparos during a trip with Yacht Getaways shot by The Nomadic People

Set amidst a garden of bougainvillea, this is the perfect restaurant for dinner. From the look to the taste, they imaginatively use local ingredients to create dishes with distinct Cycladic flavors. We recommend making a reservation in advance as it can get quite popular.

Sunset Bar in Antiparos right at sunset shot by the nomadic people

This is currently our favorite sunset bar in the world. The location, the vibe, the selection of cocktails, and the service were outstanding. Located right by a small cliff overlooking the ocean, there is no better place to watch the sun disappear behind the horizon. Pick your favorite drink from a plethora of cocktails and watch the bartender craft the perfect concoction for you to watch the warm colors of dusk fill the sky.

If you want to watch the sunset, make sure to come earlier or simply book a table in advance because this place is one of the most popular bars on the island so it will be busy no matter what day of the week.

My Little Garden Restaurant Antiparos by Bare Escape

My Little Garden Restaurant

Located in a small alley off the beaten path, this is the epitome of a secret garden. We stumbled upon this hidden gem on our way to watch the sunset, only to return after dark to feast on their delicious appetizers, entrees & desserts.

Day 7: Antiparos - Paros

Antiparos marked the final destination on our journey before returning to where it all began in Parikia, Paros. But before bidding farewell, we made a final detour to savor the enchanting waters of the Aegean Sea. Dropping anchor at a bay near Kavouras Islet, west of Paros, we indulged in sunbathing, and paddleboarding along the island’s perimeter to witness a stunning rock formation emerging from the pristine blue depths of the ocean. Our adventure concluded with a delectable last lunch, wrapping up the trip in the most perfect way.

Yacht Getaways offers a truly unique experience. Every aspect, from the impeccable service to the thoughtfully chosen destinations, is meticulously planned and seamlessly delivered.

Some of the best island and mainland destinations within the Saronic Gulf, in concise, and filled with information text. Contains navigation and sailing data such as summer wind, ports, anchorage, and route.

#3. The picturesque island of Poros

This is dedicated to the smaller, picturesque island of Poros, with tips on where to moor, where to swim, where to eat, etc.

Only 450 meters separate Poros Island from the Saronic Gulf, it is primarily renowned as a weekend getaway for Athenians. The ancient Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi and the sixth-century BC Temple of Poseidon are two quick stops on Poros Island.

At the southeasternmost end of the Aegean, sailing in the Dodecanese is perhaps the road less travelled, excepting of course tourist stalwart Rhodes. Quite a long way from Attica’s marinas, perhaps the most time-efficient option is to sail off Rhodes and roam the archipelago, visit Kos and the smaller, hidden gems such as Leipsoi and Tilos.

The name “Dodecanese” may translate as “12 Islands” but there are more than 25, all within a day’s sailing from each other.

Popular spots in the Dodecanese itinerary: Rhodes | Kos | Leros | Lipsi | Patmos | Levitha | Kalymnos | Astypalea | Kos | Tilos

#1. sailing sporades islands.

The place where all information is collected, including boat info, sightseeing, food, activities, in essence, everything you need to know before setting off.

North Aegean

Perhaps the most “urban” sailing destination, since it features quite a few large islands with year-long active towns. Reachable from Kavala (Thassos island), Alexandroupoli (Samothraki island), Thessaloniki, or Chalkidiki, the biggest islands are Lesvos and Chios, both brimming with picturesque coves and anchorages. The area is perhaps the most challenging sailing-wise since the north “Meltemi” winds can be persistent. Also, this is the cluster with the fewest and most far-between islands, so be prepared for 10-12 hour sailing between anchorages.

Cyclades Island Hopping in Greece with Yacht Getaways

September 19, 2021

cyclades island hopping

The Cyclades is the most well-known of the Greek islands, located southeast of mainland Greece in the Aegean Sea. The islands host some of Greece’s most important archaeological sites and are known for their idyllic beaches, ancient ruins, rugged landscapes, and of course the iconic, picture-perfect, whitewashed stucco buildings juxtaposed against the shimmering cerulean sea.  Cyclades island hopping with Yacht Getaways is the most exciting way to experience several of the islands in one trip.

And Kary and I did just that! After a couple of weeks exploring the mainland and Crete by car, we could not wait to board the Iris, our 45-foot catamaran, and begin our Yacht Getaways tour of Paros, Anti Paros, Ios, Schouinoussa, Koufonisia , and Naxos. Oh, what an adventure lay ahead!

Yacht Getaways

Onboard the Iris with Yacht Getaways!

Visited by millions of tourists each year, Santorini and Mykonos are undoubtedly the superstar islands of the Cyclades, but they are outrageously crowded in the summer. If you prefer to avoid the hordes yet still explore some gorgeous islands, Paros , Ios , Naxos, and others will not disappoint.

Come along with us on this part of our Big Fat Greek Adventure!

The Cyclades at a Glance

According to Greek mythology, Poseidon, God of the Sea, was so furious at the behavior of the Cyclades nymphs that he turned them into islands. However they were formed, the Cyclades — which means the Sacred islands around Delos — are scenic, romantic, and packed with outdoor adventure.

  • Area: 993 mi²
  • Population: 126,786
  • Number: 30 islands
  • Capital: Ermoupoli
  • Postal codes: 84
  • Area codes: 228

The Weather

The Cyclades Islands have a Mediterranean climate, with mild, moderately rainy winters and warm, sunny summers. The average temperature on the Cyclades ranges from around 52°F in winter to around 77° F in summer.

According to Skipper Mark, “The Iris, a Lagoon L450 catamaran, has four cabins, each with ensuite bathrooms and very comfortable queen-size beds. Swim platforms are located at the back and extra seating at the front. They are designed around trying to make as much space as possible. That’s why they have the boxy windows at the front – if you had curved windows you’d lose that space. The flip side is that they are not the fastest sailing catamaran, but every vessel comes with a compromise, and what they’ve tried to do is emphasize comfort and volume of space rather than just straight sailing performance. But with that said, these vessels do okay, you just need the breeze to be in the right direction.”

Editor’s Note: We hit a bit of windy weather that made the sea very choppy. The crew suggested that I go to the top open-air deck and sit on the padded cushion under the shade with the wind blowing in my face so that I would not get seasick. It worked like a charm! In fact, sitting up there was a blast and was my favorite sailing experience of the week.

Skipper: Mark Saunders

“I’d always been in the yacht racing scene in New Zealand. The plan was to go sailing around the world in my own 46-foot cat that I used to own, but that blew up due to some bad real estate investments. But I still wanted to go sailing, so I managed to get a commercial license and go sailing for a living rather than go sailing for pleasure on my own boat.

I’ve sailed catamarans of many different sizes, so it’s pretty easy for me to jump on one and wander around, and within a few minutes I can sail the boat. The more challenging part is to understand the wiring, electrical, where the valves are, and the nitty-gritty that you can’t see but actually need to know to be able to run the boat.

A lot of the Lagoon models are pretty simple, but when you get on the bigger boats, it can take a few weeks to get your head around how to keep them running, not from a sailing perspective but from an engineering perspective.

I got connected with Yacht Getaways through a mutual friend. They said “How quickly can we get you to Greece?” and I was on a plane within 48 hours.”

When asked if he planned to continue sailing, Mark said, “If I wake up with a smile, I’ll keep doing it, if I don’t, I won’t.”

As for the rest of the crew, I can’t even articulate how adorable this young blonde below couple was! Just 25 and 21, they exhibited a level of expertise, maturity, and social skills that is seldom seen in people their age!

1st Mate: Jake Lunn

“I was brought up sailing. I grew up on an estuary that was full of boats, including our family and friends who owned boats. So I was confident on boats from an early age. Two years ago I was lucky enough to buy my first boat myself – a 33-foot classic wooden hull yacht, made in 1975 in New Zealand.

This summer Lucy and I spent three months sailing the complete way around the UK, which was a good challenge. The pros were the wildlife, the scenery, and the freedom to go wherever we wanted to go (depending on the wind, of course). The cons were that we didn’t have a shower on board, it was an older boat, and it was tight living – nothing like this boat at all, with basic necessities but no luxury.

We have a friend that we work with in France in the winter who told us that Yacht Getaways was looking for skippers, so Lucy and I applied. They told us there are a lot of differences sailing in the UK than Greece with these types of boats so they paired us up with Mark and we’re learning as much as we can. One difference is in the UK you have a berth where you can tie fore and aft, but here in the islands you drop an anchor and reverse yourself in and squeeze in where you can.

Sailing is an amazing lifestyle. You have the freedom to go to beautiful places. People often come to the seaside and love it as a holiday, but to actually be doing it as part of a lifestyle is fantastic.”

Host: Lucy Gill

“My dad was really into all the sailing stuff and had a small yacht. When I was little I had sailing lessons and I started in the tiny dingy boats going around in the river near where we lived. I really got hooked on it when Jake and I went around the UK which was an amazing trip, especially the Isle of Skye. Crossing the Irish Sea was a bit scary, though, due to the weather and wind.

We have a friend who does something similar and we thought his job looked like amazing fun, so when we heard about an opening with Yacht Getaways, we applied…during the last month of our sailing around the UK.

Working with Mark has been great because he is such an experienced skipper; we’re both starting out and are soaking up as much information as we possibly can. And doing it in such an amazing place brings out another tier in life that is just an incredible opportunity.”

We were served a full breakfast and a delicious lunch with unlimited wine each day at the outdoor dining area onboard the Iris. Lucy did most of the cooking with Jake pitching in. I have very strict dietary requirements and Lucy did an amazing job accommodating my needs while not restricting the foodie enjoyment of the other guests. Can I just emphasize again…she’s a mere 21. I could not boil water at 21! Her pork souvlaki was better than any other that I’d had in my three weeks in Greece.

But I have to say, my favorite dish was one breakfast that Jake put together – a concoction of eggs, chorizo sausage, sundried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and feta. I usually do intermittent fasting and skip breakfast, but this masterpiece was so scrumptious that I could not resist one two big helpings. Well done, Jake!

The Itinerary

cyclades island hopping

The Islands

Kolymbithres Beach

Kolymbithres Beach

The island of Paros is where we embarked on our adventure as well as where we ended it. The island was a great jumping-off point, and for me, it was my favorite island. Both a ferry hub and a beautiful Venetian port, Paros is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades, defined by its stunning turquoise beaches, winding streets in whitewashed hillside villages, and lively local tavernas.

Parikia is the island’s main town and port. Here you’ll find the Panagia Ekatontapiliani church, also known as the Church of 100 Doors, one of the best-preserved Christian churches in Greece.

Perhaps more popular than Parikia is the town of Naoussa, alleged to have been a former pirate’s den. Once a small fishing village, Naoussa developed into the most cosmopolitan town on Paros. The marina town is filled with boutique shops and seaside restaurants.

Across the bay from the Naoussa port are the unusual white rock formations jutting up from the crystal clear water of Kolymbithres, the most beautiful beach on Paros.

There’s also the village of Lefkes with the Byzantine architecture of the Agia Triada church sitting in the middle of one of the prettiest squares in the Cyclades.

cyclades island hopping

Antiparos is a small satellite island just off the island of Paros. It’s a tiny “boutique” island that is often visited by celebrities because it’s so chic and quiet. The posh main town, Chora, is just gorgeous and worth a day trip from Paros.

ios

Ios was Kary’s favorite island on our Cyclades catamaran adventure, and for good reason. While it is considered to be a party island second only to Mykonos, there’s certainly a lot to do and see here prior to the late evening revelry.

For starters, there are 365 churches, and the best sunset view on the island can be viewed only by hiking up the hillside to the highest point, to the church of Agios Nikolaos.

The island also has the tranquil hillside village of Chora, probably the most picturesque in all the Cyclades with the typical whitewashed architecture, narrow alleys, and traditional old windmills. There are also a lot of really great restaurants. We had dinner with the other four travelers on our yacht at The Mills restaurant, right across from the windmills and with a spectacular view of the lit-up churches on the hill above and the village down below. The food, views, and company just could not be improved upon.

The most popular beach on Ios is Mylopotas. We found a really fun beach bar right across from the beach called Karma. Open-air with a riot of tropical luau colors, it features dozens of private cabanas where you remove your shoes to enter and either sit on the floor on thick colorful cushions or in one of the hammocks (yes, please!).

You can also visit the tomb of the renowned poet Homer; it’s alleged that Homer’s mother was born in Ios.

cyclades island hopping

Schinoussa is a small and remote island in the center of the Aegean Sea in the vicinity of the Naxos which is the largest of the Cyclades islands.

There isn’t an awful lot to do on Schinoussa aside from admiring the wild landscape or swimming in one of the secluded beaches. So if you’re looking for a chill vacation, you’ll find it here. You can also opt to hike around the island and admire the pristine natural landscape, indigenous flowers, and exotic palm trees.

One of everyone’s favorite treats with Yacht Getaways was when Skipper Mark anchored the Iris at a remote beach off the coast of Schinoussa so guests could jump off and enjoy a swim in the deep water (see picture above).

yacht getaways

Another jumping opportunity came before we got to Naxos where a few of the guests and crew displayed their diving prowess in the very deep water. Impressive form, Kary!

koufonisia

Enchanting Koufonisia, just a couple of hours away from popular Naxos, is a beautiful island in its own right, but will always hold a special place in our hearts because we got engaged there! If there’s a more romantic place than a stunning Greek island, I haven’t found it yet.

Strolling around the uncrowded, narrow, cobbled alleyways, Koufonisia has the vibe of what it must have been like in Greece in days gone by.

Technically, Koufonisia is a trio of islands. The first, Keros Koufonisia, is off-limits to visitors due to archeological significance; Kato (Lower) Koufonisia is wild and sparsely settled with few amenities; Pano (Upper) Koufonisia is the main island and the one for the best exploration.

Ammos (meaning “sand”) Beach is a beautiful stretch of soft sand with turquoise waters. It is located as soon as you debark in the beautiful main village of Chora (yes, every main village in the Cyclades is called Chora) in Ano Koufonisi. The shimmering turquoise water with the mountain backdrop and fishing boats in between will leave you mesmerized.

I was the recipient of another amazing surprise at this island…. I had shown Skipper Mark a photo I had of a Cyclades beach with soaring cliffs and impossibly emerald green water. I did not know the name of the beach or which island it was on.

But early in the morning, we were leaving Koufonisi, we heard the engines roar to life while all the guests were still in bed. Soon, I clambered up to the navigation deck (not exactly easy before the requisite coffee) to see what was going on. Voila! There in front of us was the photogenic beach I’d been hoping to see! He found it, Faraglioni Beach, and anchored offshore in the shallow bright green water so everyone could take photos and videos. I could not have been happier!

cyclades island hopping

Naxos is the largest of the Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea and also once the capital of the Cyclades. While other islands have their main town (Chora) up in the mountains (so it would be harder for plundering pirates to attack), the Chora of Naxos has always been the main port town. It boasts to be the most impressive capital town in the Cyclades.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by its most famous archaeological site — Portara Gate, the doorway to the never-finished ancient Temple of Apollo built in 522 BC, on the Palatia islet. We hiked uphill to the ancient site later in the day to catch the magnificent sunset through the gate.

Inland is incredibly mountainous and villages seem to simply materialize out of the arid valleys. The island is home to the highest mountain in the Cyclades — Mount Zeus, which is the source of much mythology.

Narrow alleys lead up the steep mountainside to a fantastic 13th-century Venetian citadel castle, a landmark that can be seen for miles.

The island of Naxos is huge, and since we docked at 3 pm, we didn’t have time to get to any of the legendary beaches. We walked through town to the beach close to the port, but to be honest, I can’t recommend it. The water really wasn’t pretty at all and there was a lot of seaweed. I recommend trying to find one of the better beaches if you can.

The highlight at Naxos was our dinner at Flamingo. The festively decorated rooftop terrace overlooked the bustling old town below. We listened to live traditional Greek music while watching the sun go down over the azure Aegean Sea. Our meal was excellent – hot peppers stuffed with spicy Naxos gruyere cheese, tender beef fillet with tangy house Flamingo sauce, lamb souvlaki, and ouzo of course! Everything came together so well at Flamingo that we rated it our #1 dining experience of our 3-week Big Fat Greek Adventure!

If you are lucky enough to have more time, here are the best places to stay in Naxos .

yacht getaways

We ended our Cyclades island hopping with a farewell dinner with the four new friends, passengers (Alicia, Dave, Erin, and Julia) in Naoussa, the upscale marina in northern Paros. We’d gotten to know and like these wonderful people, along with our stellar crew, and it was hard to say goodbye…and end such an enjoyable adventure.

Thanks again to Dave who let me borrow his extra shirt – it was massively windy on the waterfront and I was freezing in my sleeveless top!

Editor’s Note

This Cyclades island hopping cruise was a blast, and I highly recommend it…but for some of my Baby Boomer peeps that may not be as adventurous as me, I’m inclined to categorize it as “adventure” rather than “luxury” (although we found it quite comfortable onboard). I do not, but if you do have some mobility issues, here are a few things to consider:

  • In some ports, or because of weather conditions, it was necessary to anchor offshore instead of at the dock. To get ashore, you have to climb down into a wet, slippery inflatable dinghy.
  • When docked at port, to get off the boat, you have to walk to the end of a narrow walkway suspended in the air (I called it the gangplank). It doesn’t quite reach the dock and you have to jump about a foot or so onto the dock with the water beneath you.
  • The queen bed is very comfortable but it takes up the whole width of the cabin (which is below deck) so you have to scramble on all fours from the foot of the bed across to the front to sleep.

These are not negatives and were not issues for me, but rather just need to be taken into consideration for those with agility issues.

CHARTER A LUXURY YACHT IN THE CYCLADES

The Cyclades Located between Attica and Crete in the Aegean Sea, this small complex of islands is one of the oldest cultural resources on earth not only for the Greek civilization but for the whole of Europe. This cluster of small circular islands were named Cyclades, ( which translates in English as circular islands) and refers to this group of islands that are scattered in a circular pattern around the sacred island of Delos, the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. In Greek mythology, Poseidon, god of the Sea known for his formidable temper, turned the Cyclades nymphs, whom had somehow provoked his rage, into these rugged little islands. It is said that the sea sparkles and dances with the same joy and playfulness that the nymphs possessed before their unfortunate transformation.

Jagged, sun drenches rocks and golden beaches emerge from the azure waters of the Aegean Sea. whitewashed well cared for buildings of the ancients offer a warm invitation to explore in wonderment the architectural antiquities, dazzling reflective light and beautiful icons and frescoes founded during the presence of the Byzantine Empire.

Vineyards, olive groves, spectacular bird watching, and off the beaten track beaches offer basking in the sensuousness of these islands to all that make the trek. The visiting population ranges from well known jet-setters to those making a holy mecca to this spiritual land.

Mykonos Greece

Day 2  TINOS TO MYKONOS : The majority of visitors to Tinos are there to pay homage to the Greek Orthodox Church of Panagia Evangelistria, where a nun from Tinos,( referred to as Saint Pelagia ) was visited by visions of the Virgin Mary instructing her where to find sacred icons that have healing powers. This has encouraged mass pilgrimages for many years.. The church is draped in valuable jewels, donated by those who declare to have had healing miracles happen while they visited the church. Modest clothing is required while visiting the grounds. After leaving Church of the Panagia Evangelistruia, the island houses some of the most artful marble sculptures and buildings in Greece. Be sure to visit the quarries of Pyrgos in the north, and  more than forty ornamented villages to be found near secret coves and terraced hillsides nearby. The island boasts of magnificent foods such as sausages, tomatoes, wild mushrooms, cheeses and artichokes to make a lovely seaside lunch. Mykonos, named after Apollo’s grandson is the home to Greece’s Sun God. It is a very cosmopolitan island offering exciting nightlife, World Class shopping, stunning examples of Cycladean architecture and culture, and magnificent sun kissed exotic beaches. Delight in  Greek cuisine such as Soutzoukakia, grilled fish, octopus, and Myconian Honey Pie offered by the many acclaimed seaside eateries. While on your yacht charter in Greece, be sure to visit  local restaurant “Hippie Fish”, where the film Shirley Valentine was filmed.

Delos greece

Paros is the somewhat shyer version of Mykanos. It’s lively capitol, fashionable resort towns, beautifully intact rural villages are perfect for visitors of all ages, and to many, appealing because of the lack of crowds. Blue domed churches, whitewashed houses and paved roads are beautiful examples of Cycladician architecture. Paros has long been famous for it’s deposit of perfect white marble, most famously, Venus de Milo was carved from the marble of Paros, as was Napoleons tomb.Golden beaches invite you to the warm exotic waters of the Aegean Sea. Windsurfing is a popular sport on the southern and eastern shores. Paros also offers some of the most innovative restaurants in the Greek islands.

Day 4 IOS-SANTORINI : There is no other way to put this. Ios has a global reputation as the stomping grounds of booze filled sexually promiscuous straight out hedonism for the young and intentionally misguided. That is not to say that there are not beautiful villages and beaches to be enjoyed throughout the day, however there is a mecca to town each night from June to August for non stop liquidation. Party on dudes. The off season caters to families and your more refined mature travelers looking for a quieter pace. The most remarkable pieces of history on Ios is that Homer, the poet and author of Greek epics such as The Odyssey and The Iliad took his last breathe on Ios and lies buried in his grave at Plakoto, on the most northern tip of the island. Santorini is the most popular and well known islands in Greece, perhaps the world. There is no doubt that your imagination has visions of its splendor because it’s reputation and  beauty is so far reaching. There are so many things to experience on your yacht charter in Greece; beautiful beaches, ancient cities, splendid scenery, and an active volcano to keep things lively. Santorini’s  past and present intrigue is readily available to tour. Be sure to visit the Minoan site of Akrotiri and the hilltop village of Oia. Santorini relishes its past, but also juxtaposes  a very current  lifestyle of artists, designers, wineries, award winning breweries and distilleries and an extremely avant garde culinary scene.

Santorini Greece

In Greek mythology, Danea and her infant son Peseus were set adrift to sea from Sarifos  by Danea’s father in response to an oracle that the infant son would grow up to kill him. Years later, Perseus returned to Serifos with the head of Medusa and turned his enemies into stone. Today, blocks of marble surround the medieval castle which is the center of Chora. The most spectacular ruins on Serifos are the Watchtowers, the most famous being the megalithic Psaros Pyrgos or “couch of the cyclopes”.

Day 6 KYTHNOS TO SOUNION : Life is slow and friendly on the island of Kythnos. Island history dates back to 9000BC. The island is named for Kyhno, the leader of the Dryopons and is said to mean  “dark place to hide”, referring to its rugged valley’s and steep mountainsides, caves and nines. The most sought after attraction on Kythnos are the thermal baths where the hot waters flow from an underground source from Versuvious and mix with the crystal blue Aegean waters. These spa waters have been used from ancient times and are known to cure rheumatism. Small seaside cafes dot the coast, beautiful beaches and local crafts such as pottery and baskets make for a lovely time in Kythnos. Sounion is the home to one of the most famous and important ruins of all, the Temple of Poseidon. The temple is perched on a jagged and rocky hilltop overlooking the gleaming Aegean Sea. The temple was built in 444BC and many of its original Doric style columns are still standing. Look carefully, and you might  actually find a piece of graffiti done by none other than Lord Byron! There are numerous cafes and eateries dotted along the road. Most people love to be at the Temple of Poseidon at sunset.

What do I have to do?

Mykonos sailing the Greek islands cyclades

Sailing the Greek islands

Our departure point for your sailing holidays to the cyclades and the greek islands, we start our trip from the center of the cyclades. this means either from paros or from mykonos.

The access to both of the islands (Mykonos and Paros) is very easy and convenient. In fact, you can easy just fly out of Athens or you can take one of the many daily ferries. Athens, Santorini and also most of the other islands in the Cyclades archipelago are connected by ferries.

The Cyclades archipelago has so much to offer! In our consideration, sailing from the heart of the archipelago will provide de best possible experience. Because of their location, starting our sailing trips from either Paros or Mykonos means that we can easily reach the neighboring islands in just one tack. Usually this means that we will rarely zigzag against the wind, trying to reach our destination.

Sailing around the Cyclades with skipper. Rent a boat in Greece and visit the Greek islands!

Still thinking if you should rent a sailboat in Greece? How a boat charter to the Greek islands looks like.

Some of the islands are very well known, like Mykonos and Santorini. But the Cyclades archipelago offer an amazing mix of wilderness and cosmopolitan places. Here you will find incredible architecture in Santorini and Syros. Besides that, you will mixed them with the long sandy beaches of Paros , Mykonos and Naxos , and with the wild swimming spots of Milos and Polyegos.   And let’s not forget about the beautiful tiny of-the-beaten-path islands like Schinoussa and Kimolos .

The archipelago offers and ideal sailing distance in between the islands. In other words, long enough to enjoy your sailing legs, but in the same time short enough to limit the crossing in between the islands to 2-4 hours.

This is why we sometimes alternate our regular departure and end islands (Paros and Mykonos) with departure and arrival from Athens.

Sailing the Cyclades, Greece - Frequently asked questions

Can i customize the itinerary .

Definitely – the beauty of a sailing cruise is to experience a dream voyage tailored to your wishes. However bear in mind that sailing is about taking the wind and weather conditions into account. In fact, your captain will advice you on the best sailing route.

Also sailing conditions vary greatly across different sailing grounds. There are areas with easy to moderate sailing condition year round. But also there are areas that can sometimes can get very windy/choppy. Please feel free to ask us more details before booking if you would like to get to a specific island.

Some of the itineraries are possible even when the winds are strong. But there are also some of them that we do not  recommend when when winds are strong. This is mainly due to high sea and less sheltered places from the winds.

All in all, the key to a perfect sailing holiday is keeping flexible.

What is the embarkation time? When do we start sailing?

Usually our cruises are 7 days.  For the most part, the embarkation is on Monday 10.00 a.m and disembarkation on Sunday 04.30 pm. But upon previous agreement, other days might be arranged. Contact us to inform us of your favorite departure date.

What are the meal arrangements? What about food and drink?

Food and drink are not included in a skippered charter. This means that each day you will enjoy fantastic food and wine at friendly water-side taverns at each island.

Breakfast: it’s just a small decision of how you would feel that morning. You can either go on-shore and have breakfast and coffee. Behind the boat, in all of the Greek islands there will be many restaurants . Or if you prefer, you can make your breakfast on board.

Lunch : the best and most relaxing thing to do is to plan for a light snack on board. Most probably you will be spending the day sailing, enjoying a beautiful crystal clear water bay, swimming and sunbathing. In conclusion, there is no point to interrupt these wonderful activities in order to find a restaurant.

Dinner : the best decision would be on shore. In fact, you will have many options of traditional Greek taverns to choose from. At every place of harbor you will be spending the night you will find taverns serving delicious food. Given these points, the Greek cuisine is something that you should not miss. For example, every island has its own specialty, and yes, you have to taste them all!

The skipper will be happy to recommend a great restaurant at each place you will visit.

Surrounded by three bays, Paros is the ideal spot to begin your itinerary. The main port of Parikia is where you will start your journey. Because this cosmopolitan destination combines traditional Cycladic architecture and culture with modern amenities it is definitely worth spending a day exploring either before you embark or once you return at the end of your charter. Beginning at the coastline, Paros’ multiple white sand beaches lure guests up the limestone cliffs to expansive ocean vistas. In the two main cities on the island you will find excellent restaurants and many lively and provocative bars. After an enjoyable morning taking in Antiparos, the crew will pull up anchor and sail the seventeen nautical miles southeast to Ios. Stroll through town to the Panagia Gremiotissa, the island’s trademark hilltop venue, or tour the restored windmills above Chora. To really go back in time, visit the Bronze Age settlement of Skarkos, located near the port city. The party goes on all day on Ios so enjoy a celebratory lunch before returning to your yacht and sailing the short distance northeast to the traditional old town isle of Schouinoussa. Once you arrive on the small island known for its traditional tavernas, and offering some of the best dining in the Mediterranean, dinner ashore is an essential end to your incredible day in the Cyclades.

Day Four: As you rise to the gleaming sun on the clear waters around Schouinoussa, you can understand why it is referred to as “the jewel” of the island chain. Made up of two separate islands, you will anchor in the harbor of the northern island to enjoy a tranquil night under the stars as you are pampered by your crew.

Day Five: After a restful night in your peaceful anchorage, you will enjoy breakfast underway as you sail northwest to the largest of the Cyclades Islands, Naxos. Naxos is one of the most diverse and lush of the Cyclades Islands with a variety of things to see and do. The main city of Naxos Chora houses an Old Market and hiking trails through alleys and across green hillsides down to the white sandy coastline. Along your way, explore ancient ruins or climb to the highest point of Mount Zas and inspect the cave where according to mythology, the god Zeus grew up. Be sure to visit the famous landmark of The Portara (The Temple of Apollo) and experience the quaint villages that sprinkle the hillsides and are all connected by hiking trails. After a day of hiking and history, either relax on one of the many marvelous beaches or catch the ideal winds by kite boarding or windsurfing. Also while on Naxos, you should sample some of the excellent local wines that Dionysus, the mythical god of merriment, fertility and wine, taught the islanders to make. After a busy day on the large island, you will return to the harbor for a delicious meal and more amazing local wine before heading to your stateroom and much needed rest.

Pick up some last minute souvenirs and enjoy your last full day enjoying the beaches, from lively to sedate, they are easily reached from town. If you are still wanting more action, sample one of the small tavernas or ouzeries and raise one last glass of ouzo in salute to your amazing tour of the Greek Isles. Your last meal onboard the yacht will be one of celebration and reflection while you will recount tales of your trip and plan your next visit.

Day Seven: Depending on your schedule, you can either enjoy a leisurely morning moored in the harbor or slowly meander across the northern coast of Paros a short distance back to Parikia. Stop along the way in some of the secluded coves for a final dip in the Aegean Sea or gaze at magnificent Greek architecture as you cruise past your living post-card view. Once you arrive in Parikia, you can spend more time enjoying the city or board your flight to head home, along with glorious memories of your time spent in Mediterranean paradise.

Sailing Around the Greek Isles with Yacht Getaways.

sailing the greece cyclades with yacht getaways

A few weeks ago, we went back to Greece, but this time, we went to sail around the Cyclades! We had already been to Mykonos, Santorini, and Milos, but we were excited to explore new islands in the Cyclades. We’ve fallen in love with Greece and each of the islands so much, that we keep finding ourselves booking flights to go back. After watching Mamma Mia 2, we even made a goal to buy a house in Greece one day. Dream big friends. So, when Yacht Getaways invited us to sail with them around the Greek Isles, we couldn’t say yes fast enough!

We sailed the Dalmatian coast in Croatia with Yacht Getaways last summer and around Antigua with them earlier this year, and honestly, Yacht Getaways is our favorite vacation! You get to see and explore new places each evening and you get to spend all day sailing on a beautiful catamaran. It’s the best of both worlds—island life and boat life. You also get to meet new people and swim in the most beautiful waters we’ve ever seen.

Each boat has eight guests, a skipper, and a host. It’s a fun way to meet new people and make new friends. This time, we went with our friends, League Travels , and it was such a fun experience sailing with friends. We would definitely recommend booking a trip together with friends or family. It’s so special creating new memories and sharing experiences with the people you love. You can even get a group of eight together and book the entire boat.

We also love how the skipper and host are always so kind and accommodating. They’re total experts, so they make sure that you get the absolute best experience and see the best spots on each island and out at sea, which is amazing because you never feel like you’re missing anything. We’ve had three different sets and they’ve all been so amazing that we know Yacht Getaways only hires the best.

sailing the greece isles with yacht getaways

The Greece Cyclades route starts in Paros, then you go to Anti-Paros, Koufonisia, Mykonos, Naxos, Syros, Kea, and ends on the mainland near Athens. Sailing with Yacht Getaways is a great way to see a bunch of different Greek islands in a short amount of time. And you don’t have to worry about catching ferries or planes. You just wake up in the morning and start sailing to the next island!

One of the things we loved most about this trip was getting to see less popular and well-known islands in the Cyclades. So many of these islands are small and hard to get to or have very limited flight and ferry options, so it was an amazing way to see more of the Greek islands without being limited to flight or ferry times. Plus a lot of times with bigger cruises, you only get a limited amount of time on the island. With Yacht Getaways, you pull into the island between 4 and 6 pm each day, so you have the evening, sunset, and all night to hang out on the island, and then if you want to go explore some more in the morning before breakfast you can too. We loved wandering the streets of the small island towns in the morning, because they were so quiet and no one was around and the streets smelled of baked goods.

sailing through the greek isles with yacht getaways

During the day, we went to went to magical caves, snorkeled around a sunken WWII fighter jet, wandered through the ancient ruins of Delos, explored an abandoned prison, and saw dolphins out at sea! There’s also plenty of opportunities for diving or flipping off the boat, snorkeling, and paddle boarding. It’s basically the ultimate water holiday. If you’re looking to swim, relax, and cool off during the day and explore beautiful islands at night, you will not be disappointed.

We loved that we were able to visit and see islands that we had never even heard of and would have never known to go visit, like Koufonisia and Syros. Syros doesn’t even look like it belongs in Greece. It looks like an Italian island or like it’s part of the south of France. It was so amazing to see an island in Greece that looked so different from all of the other islands. It was seriously breath taking. As soon as we got there we knew we were going to want to go back and spend more time there. We also loved that we went to more well-known and bigger islands like Mykonos and Naxos, so we were able to get a good balance of everything in the area.

All of the islands had beautiful beaches and places to swim. And the towns were so charming that you could either just walk through the streets of town or rent ATVs and explore the entire island.

We honestly love sailing with Yacht Getaways , because it’s such an amazing and unique experience and there’s truly nothing else out there like it. It’s the perfect relaxing getaway and you get to choose how much you want to swim, explore, or relax on the boat. (All of the above for me please.)

So beautiful!! What a dream. Adding to my wanderlust list!

It really is such a dream vacation! You should definitely add it to your list 😉

Very nice article, your pictures are so beautiful and represent perfectly the greek atmosphere!! The Cyclades are really amazing for sailing vacations, glad you enjoyed, as a sailor this is my favourite area.

Thank you so much! It’s seriously such a beautiful area to sail around! So glad you love it too!

Not long back from Rhodes. All inclusive. this does look so idyllic, but on ones own, it would be difficult in such confined spaces to enjoy with prodom……couples, as even in hotels you always feel a spare part !! Had contemplated an all inclusive Gullet Cruise round Turkey/Greek Islands, but when on a day trip on one in Turkey, upon seeing the accommodation, 2 weeks, 1 week, would be a push. I think I will stick to my day trips even on boats, yachts and a possible 2 week’s on a smallish cruse ship. It is ideal this type of holiday if as a couple/s, groups etc…..and a friend was on a slightly large boat going round Croatia and was more comfortable in mingling etc….Croatia, Is upon my own experience even off mid season, and especially Krocula (a mini Dubrovnik) is all you need if land bound. So really great article and fabulous images, I feel I’m there.

Thank you! Yes, this was a great experience and is definitely best suited for couples and friends. In our opinion, it’s much better than a large cruise. That’s just not our style!

  • Small Cyclades: Greek islands off the beaten path
  • Sailing Hub

Planning your next sailing holiday in Greece ? Looking to stay away from the tourist traps? Don’t worry—there are still plenty of ways to enjoy an island retreat without all the crowds, and the Small Cyclades in the Greek islands are the perfect secret getaway if you’re willing to step off the beaten path.  Let's get started!

  • What makes sailing the Small Cyclades such a dream holiday?

Small Cyclades best islands

Preparing for your journey to the small cyclades, recommended 14-day small cyclades sailing itinerary from/to lavrion, recommended 7-day small cyclades sailing itinerary from/to paros, what makes sailing the small cyclades such a dream holiday  .

Top reasons to visit Small Cyclades Islands in Greece

There’s nothing like taking off for an island retreat to catch some sun and sand and soak up the sunshine. But you’re not the only one with island life on the mind. Some locales are so hot and so noteworthy, that once you’re there … well, those crowded beaches don’t exactly make it feel like a retreat. Everyone’s heard about partying in Mykonos, but if you’re after a holiday experience that offers a little more tranquillity and R&R, look to the lesser-known Greek islands: the Small Cyclades.

Unlike the main Cyclades, which attract millions of tourists every year, the small Cyclades are far less travelled and are a sort of “insider secret” among real travel fiends.

Why should you visit the small Cyclades?

For one, you’ll truly be able to enjoy the serene “island life” here. The Small Cyclades are among Greece’s smallest inhabited islands with populations only in the couple hundreds. Sailing around Greek islands like these allows you to slow down, take a break from your normal hectic schedule, and really soak in the simpler, more leisurely pace of life.

And there’s plenty to soak in. The Small Cyclades are abound with beautiful beaches, stunning hiking trails, and one-of-a-kind Mediterranean views.

Iraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonisia & Donousa are some of the best Greek islands in Small Cyclades

What’s in store for you when you decide to take a step off the beaten path and travel to the Small Cyclades?

Iraklia is the largest island in the Small Cyclades. It’s also home to the Cave of the Sacred Icon of Agios Giannis, where you can explore stalactites and stalagmites by torchlight. Looking for a little more sun? Iraklia has eight breathtaking hiking trails whose cliffs offer perfect views of the other Greek islands.

The second most populated island in the Small Cyclades is Schinoussa . Home to ancient sites, like a Byzantine church and even a medieval castle, Schinoussa has a rich history that’s ripe for exploration. Here, you can enjoy your pick of secluded beaches, like Psili Ammos or Lioliou Beach, and then head to some of the delicious cafes and restaurants in Schinoussa’s three villages, Chora, Mersini, and Maseria.

Looking to have the best of both worlds when sailing the Cyclades?

Koufonisia is sometimes called the Mykonos of the Small Cyclades and is probably the most popular in this stretch of smaller Greek islands. A particularly great time to go is in late May or early June when you could catch the Fisherman's Festival , a feast celebrated on Koufonisia on the Saturday before Pentecost Monday, complete with traditional music, dancing, and, of course, great food.

Donousa is another stop in the Small Cyclades that you don’t want to miss while yacht chartering Greece. The main village is called Stavros, where you can check out the Church of Stavros with its striking blue dome, explore the villages’ taverns and cafes, and spend days visiting the islands’ four main beaches.

Ready to travel away from the crowds for a getaway that’s 100% relaxation and nowhere near the tourist traps?

The best time for sailing the small Cyclades is from June to mid-September when clear skies with sunshine are the norm, and you can count on an average temperature of 25C (77F).

Next, when preparing your Cyclades sailing itinerary, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

First, where to start from: You can begin your journey either from Lavrion, Paros, or Mykonos. Lavrion is on the mainland, so it is easily accessible from Athens International Airport. Paros and Mykonos, on the other hand, are in the heart of the Cyclades.

Because the Small Cyclades are further from the mainland, we recommend a two-week yacht charter and larger yachts .

A longer yacht charter simply gives you more time to cross the longer distance, so you’ll have more time to make stops along the way and hit the beach.

Next, you’ll also want to consider what kind of yacht to charter for sailing the Cyclades.

A larger yacht is key for sailing the Aegean Sea, as the Meltemi wind that blows in July and August would be too strong for smaller yachts. For your unique trip, a larger yacht might be a catamaran, which can easily cover more distances, or a larger sailing yacht if you’re looking for the ultimate and original sailing experience!
