About the Deck Department

deck article 01

The deck department on board a superyacht is a dynamic, multifunctional department that involves duties ranging from skippering an Atlantic crossing to taking guests on jet-ski tours of some of the most beautiful hidden bays in the world. The work is extremely varied and an assortment of skills are necessary to be successful.

This department is responsible for the following aspects of the yacht operation:

  • owner communication
  • financial administration
  • bridge operations
  • exterior repair and maintenance
  • tender and water sports operations
  • safety procedures

The development path for an individual wishing to pursue a career on deck is very specific and requires achieving certain milestones. As an entry-level deckhand, focus should be on learning as much as possible from senior deck crew. Daily duties will include cleaning, polishing and exterior maintenance. As ordinary as these jobs may seem some days, the importance of learning good techniques and basic skills is crucial to continued progression in the superyacht industry. At the beginning of your career it is important to document all the skills you learn as well as your sea time.

As you graduate from rookie status after one year onboard yachts, the next step will be to develop boat handling skills and pursue your first deck license which might be a 100T USCG or MCA Y200. You will also continue to learn more advanced maintenance and repair techniques. This is the stage in most deck careers where the decision is made to pursue yachting as a long-term profession, investing the time and money necessary to progress.

Continuing to build your career as a seafarer with three or more years of experience will likely involve obtaining more advanced licenses. The educational requirements are demanding and expensive – they are an investment in your future. However, it is important to balance time at school with continued experience on board yachts, refining your skills and building sea time. During this stage of your career, you will become more involved in bridge operations and navigation.

The role of a captain aboard a luxury yacht is one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world, and with this opportunity comes great responsibility. The captain is ultimately responsible for the safety, well-being and experience of every crew and guest on board. In addition to managing the deck team, they also possess primary responsibility for financial administration and owner communication. Captains are professional seaman, expert problem solvers and are able to manage every situation with poise and exemplary leadership.

The 'Below Deck' Crew Works Hard For Their Pay

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

It's lucky to find a well-paying career that doubles as a passion, and many people have to settle for one or the other, even reality stars. So how much does the crew of Below Deck make? They all seem to love the sea, though their salaries don't compare to those of the rich and famous people who charter their services. But being a steward or a deckhand seems like a great job. Flexible schedules, plenty of time outside, and the shot at some major tips all combine to make this a perfect career path for anyone who loves boats and can manage service with a smile.

The crew that's actually featured on Below Deck succeeds and fails to various degrees, but their profession is one that takes a certain combination of skills and makes Captain Lee's plane ticket policy totally necessary. Once you hire someone for a charter, you're stuck with them until it ends. If you've ever been worried about your performance review at work, at least be thankful that you're not marooned at sea with an angry boss. Anyway, the actual salaries vary depending on the different jobs available to the crew. But the best way to ensure that you get paid well is to provide amazing service, because that $1,000 bonus at the end of each charter is what everyone is working towards.

Yacht Captain: Lee

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

According to a reference guide by Luxury Yacht Group, which provides salary ranges for all yachting roles quoted here, a captain can make from $7,000 to $20,000 a month, depending on experience and the size of their yacht. The Eros is 160 feet (on the large side), while Captain Lee's Bravo bio says he has 20 years of experience, and has had his captain's license since he was 35. So he probably makes closer to that $20,000 figure.

Chief Stew: Kate

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

Kate, as the chief stew, takes on a significant amount of work above and beyond the normal duties of a steward. And she's had years of experience, so I'm willing to bet she maxes out LCG's estimate of $9,000 a month.

Bosun: Eddie

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

Back on the deck crew, a bosun will take home somewhere in the range of $3,000-$6,000 a month, which seems low compared to the amount of responsibility Eddie's taken on managing the deck crew, though he could have a unique rate due to that.

Engineer/Deckhand: Don

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

Don seems pretty insistent on the difference between an engineer and a deckhand, especially because he feels that an engineer usually doesn't have to listen to the bosun. Luxury Charter Group has an estimate for exactly that role, proving it must be somewhat common in the yachting community. Turns out Don is probably making between $3,000-5,000 a month.

Second Stew: Amy

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

As Kate's second in command, Amy, qualifies for somewhere between $2,500 and $5,000 per month, depending on her experience and what she was able to negotiate, because Amy's ability to sweet talk must make it easy for her to coax even the toughest yacht hiring service into a few dollars more.

Third Stew: Rocky

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

She probably makes about $2,500 per month, which could be equal to other crew members depending on where they fall in their various salary ranges.

Deckhand: Connie/Emile

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

Connie might be the hardest working person on the ship, and yet her estimate is $4,000 a month, based on LCG's cross section of yacht size and experience. Emile has less experience than Connie, so he's probably making closer to $2,500 per month.

Ship Chef: Leon

how much money does a deckhand make on a yacht

Leon is an incredibly experienced chef, but he hasn't been getting along with the rest of the crew because he doesn't have the same yachting experience as many of the others. But that doesn't stop him from earning up to $12,000 a month, which may explain his "F the haters" mentality so far. Let's hope that figure is enough to bring Ben back.

Basically, when a yachtie is working, for the most part they are making a good a salary. But as Below Deck has demonstrated, the hours can be very long, charters can be scarce at certain parts of the year, and getting fired can happen at any time. Build experience and work on a large boat of a challenging size, however, and you will find that the life of a charter yacht crew member can be a great way to make a living.

The average monthly payment for a deckhand is €2,500; however, it can range from €2,000 to €3,500. Most Superyacht payments are made in euros. The salary can depend on many factors, the main one being the yacht’s “crew” budget.

The owner or management firm will settle on a spending limit that the captain uses to hire a crew. Each yacht will have a unique budget, so the wages paid to the crew may differ slightly from yacht to yacht.

Additionally, whether you work on a private or charter yacht can affect your overall pay. It is customary for guests on a charter yacht to give the crew a tip; the standard amount is 10% of the charter cost. Superyacht chartering can cost between €250,000 and €1,000,000 per week.

For a week’s charter, tips are typically between €2,000 and €5,000, and they are distributed equally among the crew. Your monthly salary is supplemented by tips. More details are provided in our guide to superyacht salaries. The fact that you reside on the yacht means that your daily expenses are minimal.

Without Any Prior Experience, How Do I Become A Deckhand?

If you want to work as a Deckhand on a Superyacht, you don’t need to be a Yachtmaster or have any prior experience on a boat. The majority of Superyacht crews lack prior boating experience. When you get on board, the crew of the yacht will show you the ropes and go over expectations with you.

Any prior diving, boating, or watersports experience will be beneficial, though. You need not be concerned if you haven’t operated boats or worked in a practical capacity.

The desire to work outside in the sun is something that all crew members share, aside from the prerequisites mentioned above.

What all Superyachts look for is a good attitude , a desire to work hard, and to be part of a team. You can accomplish a lot if you have a good, upbeat attitude. All we ask is that you bring a strong work ethic and a positive attitude. Flying Fish can provide all the credentials and skills you need to get started.

How To Enter The Maritime Industry

On a big ship or boat, you can work as a deckhand even without any prior experience. However, anyone seeking a higher-level position in the maritime sector may need to enroll in a naval training program or submit an application for positions at the entry level.

Attend A Maritime Training School

You can acquire the knowledge and abilities required to begin a career as a deckhand on a merchant vessel or large ship by enrolling in a maritime training program. Your comprehension of maritime safety procedures will also improve as a result of the training. With the knowledge and skills required to move up the professional ladder, training can advance your career.

Professionals seeking positions on sizable ships, like container and cruise ships, are best served by maritime training programs. Skilled deckhands are also well-positioned to advance up the corporate ladder and become senior captains, engineers, and deck officers. Deckhands can choose from a variety of career paths, and there are specialized training programs to support you in achieving your professional objectives.

How To Become a Successful Deckhand On A Yacht

Learn About Deckhand Duties

Prior to looking for work as a deckhand, it is crucial to be aware of your obligations. A physically demanding job requiring perseverance and hard work is being a deckhand. Working on inland or large ship with experienced crew members will help you develop the skills necessary to be a successful deckhand. Deckhand responsibilities vary according to a vessel’s schedule and purpose. Deckhands are in charge of performing general maintenance, watching over the ship, operating the tender, and cleaning the vessel.

Understand The Structure Of The Deck

The youngest members of a deck crew are the deckhands. While learning from the more experienced crew members when they first start out, deckhands should be aware of their surroundings. Respect the more seasoned crew members and consistently carry out their requests to the best of your ability. Experts advise seeking clarification from others in order to ensure that you operate safely. Depending on the purpose and size of a yacht or ship, a deck’s structure varies. A deckhand employed on a small boat will never have the same responsibilities as one employed on a cruise or container ship.

Apply For Entry-level Positions

The simplest route to becoming a deckhand is to apply for maritime jobs that don’t need specialized training or licensing. In the marine industry, inland vessels are typically where unskilled workers are assigned to work. As a deckhand on an inland ship, you can learn more about the maritime industry without needing a license or certification. You can still advance in your career even if you aren’t employed by a container or cruise ship. The majority of deckhands who begin their careers working on inland vessels utilize their free time to gain experience and skills that will help them advance in their careers.

Obtain Certification

Obtaining the necessary certification is the next step after being aware of what it takes to be a deckhand. Once you possess the required documentation and certification, you will be eligible for roles with high salaries and rankings. For instance, a deckhand needs a visa before going to maritime hubs for interviews. Being registered with crew agents will give you access to a variety of open positions in the marine industry, which is another essential step in becoming a deckhand. Having a large network of contacts in the maritime industry and having a good reputation are also requirements.

Look For Opportunities To Hone Your Skills

You can find a ton of information and training programs on the internet to help you become a successful deckhand. Additionally, you can learn from more seasoned deckhands by asking them for advice when you stray from the path. To establish a strong brand identity, always go above and beyond and seize every chance. Deckhands should conduct themselves in a professional manner as well, as every interaction, they have the potential to advance their career. Be ready for any opportunity that may arise. Recognize that you’ll play challenging roles where you can either stand out or come off as a newbie. On the other hand, be open to learning and learn how to work with others.

What Credentials Do I Need To Be A Deckhand?

When it comes to credentials and experience, three factors should be taken into account. The first two are required, but the third is up to you and your past employment history and work experience.

  • All crew members who work at sea are required to have an ENG 1 medical. Before completing Step 2, we advise that if you are considering working as a Superyacht Deckhand, you complete the ENG1 medical.
  • All crew members must complete STCW Basic Safety Training in order to be prepared for emergencies at sea. A six-day course called STCW covers topics like first aid, firefighting (which is a lot of fun), and health, safety, and security at sea.
  • Get some experience; we’ll explain more about this below; however, you don’t need to have prior yachting experience to work on a superyacht. However, having a foundational understanding is helpful. Yachts want to know that you are a hard worker, enjoy the outdoors, and get along well with others. If you have experience in any of the following fields, to name a few: hospitality, engineering, carpentry, electrical work, teaching water sports, or divemastership, your resume will look fantastic.

It is true that the more experience and skills you can bring to a new job, the better. In other words, if you’re new to yachting and want to become qualified before leaving, we can help you get started.

Working Conditions For A Deckhand

Depending on the type of ship a deckhand is working aboard, their responsibilities can vary. For instance, a deckhand working on a fishing boat might need to know how to use scuba gear, lines, and pots. Transportation or recreational vessel may need to provide hospitality services like bartending, table setting, and cabin attendant care. Deckhands are able to work in any weather and spend a lot of time at sea. You might have to work irregular hours and in confined spaces as a deckhand. Deckhands who are working under pressure may only get four hours of sleep and downtime.

What is a typical working day like as a Deckhand?

Your working day will typically start at 8:00am and finish at 6:00pm, usually six days a week. When on charter, or if the owners are onboard, your work hours will differ. Unsociable hours are common when guests are on board.

Do I live on board?

You will share a cabin with another Deckhand. The cabins are small but comfortable, with an ensuite bathroom. There is access to the internet via that yacht’s Wifi system, so you can keep in touch with friends and family at home.

How do I find work on a Superyacht?

There are three ways crew can find a job:

  • Most crew travel to Antibes, France, described as the hub of yachting in the Mediterranean. The Med season runs from March through to October.
  • Online, we talk a bit more about “going online” below.
  • Contacts. If you know somebody already working on a Superyacht, then it is possible to find work through their connections.

Almost everybody that is looking for a job on a Superyacht travels to Antibes, France. On arrival, crew tend to stay in a crew house, such as the  Crew Grapevine  used as a base to look for work.

If budget is a concern, then crew join forces and rent an Airbnb between them. The advantage of a crew house like the Crew Grapevine is that the owners (ex-yachties) actively help you find a job.

The way you find a job on a Superyacht is quite unique. From your base in Antibes, you would travel to other ports in the local area, walk the dock and chat with the crew working onboard to see if any positions are available.

Superyacht crew who have the evening off will go to the local bars to unwind. This is the perfect chance to get to know people working on Superyachts and build connections in the industry.

Go online to look for a work

All Superyacht recruitment agents post positions on their respective websites. Once qualified, new, or “green crew”, as they are known, would register with the agency and complete their registration form. You would then get in touch with the agent to start searching for that dream job.

The recruitment agent’s job is to match the right candidate for the job being advertised. There are many recruitments agents out there, we work closely with  YPI  a Superyacht recruitment agency based in the South of France.

A quick Google search for “ Superyacht Recruitment Agents ” will bring up a list.

Yotspot  is a very popular website that matches yachts with quality crew.

Facebook  is another medium that yachts use to post jobs. To keep up to date, is it worth joining a couple of the Superyacht Facebook groups. Yacht crew jobs and Palma yacht group are two examples.

How long does it take to find work on a Superyacht?

Over the 12 years we have been running our Superyacht Deckhand programme, most customers find a job between one and four weeks. We have had customers that have found a job in a day and others that have taken six weeks to find that perfect job.

The time it takes to find a job is down to you. You will need to be proactive, up early, and make sure you are at the front of the queue. From our experience, people who work hard and explore every opportunity will find a job quickly.

Every Captain or Officer that calls us for a reference asks the same question – does the candidate have a good attitude? You need to be hard-working, happy to work long hours, and used to mucking in. Have a can-do attitude and a willingness to go the extra mile to help your fellow crewmates.

When is the best time to look for work on a Superyacht?

Traditionally Superyachts recruit for the Mediterranean season  any time between February to May.  That being said, yachts recruit all year round. We have seen many graduates find work in July and August when the season is in full swing.

The next key recruitment period is between September and November as yachts prepare for the Caribbean season. Yachts will cross the Atlantic anytime between December and January to cruise the Caribbean or the US for the winter.

How Much Do Deckhands on ‘Deadliest Catch’ Actually Make?

It's a LOT more than you think.

deadliest catch deckhand

But you’ve also likely wondered why anyone would put themselves in this much potential harm. The answer is easy: Money.

According to former stars and captains Gary and Kenny Ripka, the heads of the vessels can make quite a bit during one season.

“I’ve made upwards of $150,000 to $170,000 a year,” Kenny told People .

But what about the other employees on the boat? What’s in it for them? Well, that depends.

So, how much do deckhands on Deadliest Catch actually make?

Kenny explained that it varies year-to-year, particularly because they get paid depending on what they catch, not by a salary.

“For crab seasons, deckhands can typically make anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 for a couple months of work,” Kenny said.

Gary added, “My guys this year, I think for 6 weeks...they made $30,000.”

Not a bad haul, when you consider the short time period that encompasses. But there's a catch.

What’s stopping me from moving to Alaska ASAP?

The Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development elaborated a little further about a deckhand’s wage, and it doesn't sound quite as cut-and-dry as the Ripka's made it seem.

“Wages are often based on a share or percentage of harvest earnings,” the website reads . “Newcomer deckhand earnings range from 1.5% to 10% of the adjusted gross catch, depending on location and type of fishery and the skills the worker possesses.”

deadliest catch cast

Some apparently offer $50-$100 day rates instead, which could end up being a safer bargain. Especially because the site notes, “Recent market conditions have caused some share rates to decline.”

Crew members are also required to supply their own commercial fishing licenses, which are around $60 for a resident and $165 for a nonresident. You’ll also likely have to purchase gloves, a sleeping bag, rubber boots, and other gear that can add up to nearly $400.

That’s quite an investment. What would I have to do every day?

The Department of Labor says employers look for those who:

  • are available to work the full season or contract period
  • are physically able to stand and work long hours and move heavy objects
  • get along well with other people in remote and often wet and cold conditions
  • are ready for hard work, are not chronic complainers, and have a positive attitude
  • follow directions and abide by safety rules

Another presentation on the site says entry level deckhands often cook meals, plan menus, clean the boats, purchase groceries, and have strong abilities in navigation, first aid, and CPR.

So the breakdown is: You could make as high as $50K and as low as $15K in a short period of time, but you’ll have to work very hard to earn it. You know what? We think we’ll just stick to the couch after all.

Crew Shares – Pay for Fishing Boat Deckhands

Most offshore workers, whether on a factory trawler or a small salmon gillnetter, are paid a percentage of their ship’s catch, called a crew share. Crew members on small fishing vessels such as purse seiners or gillnetters work exclusively for a crew share and aren’t paid until the end of the season, when they’re given a percentage of what the boat earns for its catch. The crew share varies quite a bit depending on the number of people and the size of the boat. Usually, the captain takes his share (typically 35-40 percent) and the remainder is divided among the rest of the crew after the cost of fuel, food, and other expenses are deducted. For example, a purse seiner with a five-man crew can typically catch $200,000 of salmon in a summer. At the end of the fishing season, the skipper pays each deckhand 10 percent, or $20,000, and deducts expenses worth about $3,000, leaving each crew member with $17,000. Gillnetters and trollers often pay a straight percentage (usually 10-15 percent) to their crew members, and pay expenses out of the boat’s share.

Salmon Purse Seiner in Alaska

Workers on larger vessels such as floating factory processors or factory trawlers receive the bulk of their pay from their hourly wages, which are usually in the minimum wage ($10.85/hour as of January 1, 2023) to $18 per hour range plus time and a half for overtime ($16.27 – $27 per hour). Many processing companies also pay a bonus based on the amount of fish processed by the boat, or offer an additional 50-75 cents per hour worked as a bonus if the worker completes his or her contract. Most processors work huge amounts of overtime, often 20-40 hours each week, so their overtime and bonuses can often amount to more than their base wages.

Both systems of pay have their advantages and drawbacks. Crew shares offered by fishing boats offer the lure of potentially huge paydays at the end of the season, but a bad year or an inept skipper can also result in virtually no income at all. Processing work doesn’t usually result in a huge payoff, but the income is much more predictable.

How much money can you make working on yachts?

It seems to be the question everyone wants to know the answer to lately. Especially as Below Deck has risen in popularity. I bet you have sat there wondering “How much does the crew on Below Deck make?” Of course, the TV show is different to the real world and the yacht crew on Below Deck will also be getting various other sponsorship deals out of it too.

Ignoring Below Deck, how much can you, as a junior crew member make? If you have never worked on a boat before you will be considered “green”. Sometimes you will see “green stew” or “green deckhand” roles advertised, this just means the yacht is open to employing someone who has no experience.

Read on to find out more about how much you should expect to make in your first year of yachting.

What is the salary of a yacht stewardess?

If setting beautiful tablescapes, and ironing gets you excited, maybe you have started looking into how to be a stewardess already. If you think you have the skills to stew but want to know if it’s worth it, read on.

A green stewardess should be making €3000+ per month in her first year. This is pretty much the minimum wage for stews. It’s not a lot, sure. But you may not have to pay tax on that, depending on your tax situation. And don’t forget everything is paid for onboard the yacht. You won’t need to buy toiletries, pay rent, power, or even cover medical expenses. The boat will cover all of those expenses leaving you with a stack of cash each month.

As you work your way up in the industry, expect that to increase. Even without HOD status, there are stews with a couple of years of experience making €5-6k per month on private yachts.

Of course, working on charter yachts is a different story. Keep reading to find out how much you will make working on charter yachts.

How much does a deckhand make on a yacht?

Deckhands have a really interesting skill set. When you enter the super yachting industry, you will be likely to have some attributes such as a passion for watersports, or a background in handyman type work. But rarely do deckhands come into the industry with professional-level tender driving skills, teak maintenance know-how, or sikaflex skills. These are all taught on the job and a junior deckhand salary usually reflects this.

Junior deckhands usually command a lower starting salary than their junior stewardess counterparts. Expect to make €2800+ per month initially. Some yachts will boost that salary up after you have passed probation (usually 3 months) but others really do pay low and expect you to graft for a bit and “pay your dues” so to speak.

Keep in mind, you may not have to pay tax on this (again, check your own country’s laws and your tax status within them) and everything is provided for you on the boat.

After a year or so in the industry, or if you have additional skills, such as a carpenter degree, expect to boost that wage up considerably.

how much does a yacht chef make?

What is a yacht chef salary?

Many restaurant chefs ask how much a yacht chef makes. And it’s because yacht chefs can command very high salaries in their first year as yacht chefs that it is a lucrative career path. A good chef can be hard to find, and captains and owners know how important food is for both the crew and the guests. A successful charter often hangs on the food.

If you have Michelin experience or extensive restaurant experience, and if you have a culinary degree you can command a higher salary. Depending on the boat size, you can expect to start as a chef on a yacht for around €5000+ per month. If you land a head chef role on a vessel over 80m, expect that salary to double. If you work as a sous chef on yachts, you will likely make €4500-€6000per month.

Salaries for yacht chefs is very dependent on the yacht size and the programme of the yacht. A new yacht chef can very easily get a job paying more than €10k per month if they happen to have the right skill and be available at the right time.

If you are considering becoming a yacht chef, but do not have a formal culinary education, you can still enter the industry. Stew/Chefs are common on smaller yachts (25-30m) the workload and culinary expectations are very different. A stew/chef can expect to make €3500per month in their first year.

Deck/chef is a very uncommon role.

How much will I earn as an engineer on superyachts?

If you are considering working on superyachts as an engineer, it is likely that you already have commercial tickets. Many engineers come into the industry this way as it makes a great change from the commercial shipping side of life. If you are wondering how the pay differs from how much an engineer on a superyacht gets paid, keep reading!

Firstly, you will likely be starting in a rotational role. This means you will only 6 months a year, assuming you get a time for time rotation. It is common for yacht engineers to go straight into a rotational role. There are no such things as having to prove yourself in yachting for this to happen- so long as you have those commercial tickets. Salary for yacht engineers is also somewhat dependent on the yacht size and your experience. A Second Engineer might make €6000 per month (again, only working 6 months a year but being paid for 12) but a Chief Engineer on the same sized yacht could be on €12,000 easily.

Most Engineers join yachting as a second engineer first before stepping up to chief. Even if their tickets allow them the role of a chief. Because the engineering department is so specialized with their tickets and the types of yachts/engines each engineer has experience on, the salary is just a ballpark.

If you do not have any commercial tickets but you are handy with a spanner and think like an engineer, you can enter yachting with very basic engineering qualifications. You will need to sit the AEC course to be allowed to work in the engine room on big yachts. This role will generally not be rotational, as you will be learning on the job and of course, will be doing all the dirty jobs. Expect to make around €4000per month as a starting salary.

Is it tax free working on superyachts?

This is a question I get asked a lot. Do I have to pay tax? At the end of the day, that’s your decision. You should contact your own accountant in the country where you are a tax resident to confirm if you have to pay tax or how much. Yachting can be a tax-free job for some people.

How much money will I make on a charter yacht?

Everyone wants to know about charter yachts and charter tips. How much do guests tip? How much money will I make working on charter yachts? When do I get rich!? ha. Ok, but seriously, charter tips are not a given. I’ve had many times where I have joined a charter yacht with dollar signs in my eyes. only for the charters to cancel or in one case, the guests didn’t even leave a tip! So you shouldn’t consider going to a charter yacht purely on the tips alone.

But ok, you want to know how much you will make for a charter tip?

How long is a piece of string? I know of crew getting €0 for a charter, and I know of plenty who have gotten tens of thousands of dollars or euros per week-long charter.

Keep in mind…

When you accept a yacht job, no matter what department you will be working in. There are other things to consider when you see the salary.

Is it private or charter?

Is the yacht dual season? if it is a dual season, you will likely be busier with work.

How many charters do they already have confirmed for the upcoming season?

What is the nationality of the owners? (This is important for the chef, as some nationalities have different expectations)

What is the leave package like? Do you have some form of rotation? Do you get weekend off (uncommon, but not impossible)

Is there a 13-month bonus?

What other retention programmes does the yacht offer the crew? Some will pay for courses etc

So, how much will I make working on a superyacht?

I really can’t say. There are averages and unofficial rates. But every yacht will tweak this as best as they see fit. A busier programme might balance the role with more rotation. A quieter programme may pay less, but you have weekends off and laid back owners etc. It really all depends on the programme and what sort of yacht you are looking for.

Money is not everything, and I wouldn’t suggest chasing a dream job on the salary alone.

Dockwalk has a really good table of yacht crew salaries that is updated each year. It is self reposted and of course not all yacht crew participate, but it should give you an idea of what the salaries are for yacht crew in 2023.

Screen Rant

The below deck crew's salary & how much they make on the show.

Cast members on Below Deck not only make their salary for doing their job on the boat, but they also make a fee for appearing in the series.

  • Crew members on Below Deck not only get paid for their job on the superyacht but also receive a fee for appearing on the reality series.
  • The cast members of Below Deck make impressive salaries for working just four months out of the year.
  • In addition to their salaries, the crew members also receive tips from the guests on the yacht, which can be substantial.

Not only does the crew on Below Deck get paid for their designated job, but they also receive a fee for appearing in the reality series. The franchise features long-time and new crew members eager to make a name for themselves in the yachting industry. Those who join Below Deck use the platform to help advance their careers by appearing on TV. While the work on a superyacht might seem hard, the cast's compensation makes it all worth it.

The popular Bravo reality series Below Deck hit viewers' TV screens for the first time in 2013. Since then, the show has garnered quite a large following, with the binge-worthy series Below Deck as one of the highest-rated shows on Bravo. After being on for so many years, there are questions regarding how much the cast makes, both for being part of the show and for their regular crew duties. For only working four months out of the year, the cast creates an impressive salary that would have anyone convinced yachting is a good career choice.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

The below deck crew makes a salary & an appearance fee.

According to Refinery29 , the cast of Below Deck makes quite a hefty salary for simply doing their superyacht job. For example, on a yacht the size of the My Seanna from Below Deck , a second and third steward makes about $5,000 monthly, while a chief steward brings in around $5,500 to $6,000 monthly. The chef makes about $7,000-$10,000 a month, depending on experience and training. The deckhands usually make around $3,500-$4,500 a month, while a bosun would make a little more at approximately $5,000 monthly.

The Below Deck Crew Also Brings In Tips

The crew even receives tips from the guests on top of their salaries. On Below Deck , they usually bring in around $15,000 per person in tips for about six weeks of work. Plus, the team does not work a whole yacht season, so they likely make more as they move from boat to boat. The Captain usually makes between $150,000 to $210,000 a year working on a 185-foot superyacht , assuming the Captain is working full-time. Additionally, the Captain can make up to $100,000 on top of the salary they are getting if they charter their yacht for the entire year.

On top of the money they make on the yacht, the crew also gets a small fee for appearing on Below Deck . According to Page Six , the crew makes about $5,000-$6,000 per month. Ashley Marti from Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 3 confirmed this and believes the Bravo pay discrepancy with Below Deck is unfair. The Real Housewives makes upwards of $1 million per season, while the Southern Charm cast makes around $25,000 an episode.

Since Bravo has created such a cult following in the past few years, many doors open for the cast members they hire. Now, crew members from any Below Deck series can make appearances for a small fee and profit from their fame on social media. In short, it pays to work on a yacht and to appear on a reality TV show.

Below Deck airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.

Sources: Refinery29 , Page Six

Below Deck is a popular reality TV franchise that focuses on a group of crew members as they work on luxurious yachts and cater to their client's needs. After the original series proved to be a success, Bravo developed a handful of spinoff shows including Below Deck Selling Yacht, Below Deck Adventure, Below Deck Down Under, and Below Deck Mediterranean.

How Much Do Deckhands Make on Deadliest Catch? (Salary)

how much do deckhands make on deadliest catch

It wasn’t until we all watched Deadliest Catch that we started to figure out how demanding and dangerous the job of crab fishing actually is. And while it’s no secret that these men quite literally put their lives on the line just to feed us crab, no one really knows what they get paid. How much do deckhands make on Deadliest Catch? The answer might just make you want to change careers.

Deckhand Salary for Deadliest Catch

Although people who are just plain simple deckhands on crab boats minus the cameras and dedicated TV shows don’t really make a lot, the deckhands featured on Deadliest Catch are some of the best paid in the industry. These guys get paid up to $170,000 a year for their appearance on the show .

That’s independent of whatever money they make with their crab haul. So yeah, these guys definitely get compensated with a handsome sum. But can the same be said for your average, everyday crab fisherman?

The Real Crab Boat Deckhand Situation

The reality is that a basic crab fisherman might get paid just a fraction of the Deadliest Catch deckhands’ salary. On average, the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development estimates that a crab boat greenhorn will make around $30,000 a year . But there are a ton of factors that could affect the actual number.

To come up with a more accurate representation of their salary, you would have to compute about 6% to 8% of what they haul out of their boat. For instance, a $200,000 crab haul would pay a greenhorn deckhand between $12,000 or $16,000 for that single haul .

In terms of work hours, they could spend up to 15 hours a day doing their work which is labor intensive to say the least. And because crab boats don’t return home until after three or four weeks on the water, there’s very little rest to be had.

*See: How to Get a Job on a Crab Boat as a Greenhorn

What Do Crab Boat Deckhands Do?

They’re mainly responsible for all of the labor-intensive jobs on the deck. That includes managing the lines, deploying pots, sifting through the catch, tossing back bycatch, processing the crabs, and cleaning up the exterior of the ship. They also relay information to and from the captain, and take orders from him as well.

Risks of Crab Boat Deckhand Work

As one of the most dangerous jobs on the water, deckhands are prone to all sorts of injuries including back, arm, leg, and neck injuries due to slips and falls. Seafarers have also been found to be more prone to depression because of the isolated and often strange conditions surrounding the vessel.

Going for long periods without any other human contact aside from the people on deck can also take a toll on mental health.

How Much Do Captains on Deadliest Catch Make?

If you thought the deckhands made a pretty penny, wait until you find out how much the captains make. These guys are paid close to $50,000 per episode . And with each season having anywhere between 10 to 20 episodes, it’s not hard to see how a crab boat captain might want a stint on the show.

The Wealthiest Catch

How much do deckhands make on Deadliest Catch? Well, a lot more than most of us, that’s for sure. So if you were thinking of getting started as a crab boat deckhand, you might have better chances of earning bigger bucks by getting a slot on the hit show.
