SW105 Taniwha Takes to the Ocean

After extensive sea trials, our new SW105GT sailing yacht, Taniwha has set off on her maiden voyage, heading for the Mediterranean Sea. An experienced crew of 4 men and 3 women will take turns along a journey of 7400 miles, passing Santa Elena Island, Cape Verde, the Canary Islands and finally entering the Med via Gibraltar.

Christened in Cape Town in April 2021, SW105 Taniwha is the latest yacht launched by Southern Wind, a “smart custom” yacht with strong character and an elegant and unmistakable style, designed by  Farr Yacht Design and Nauta Design.

Taniwha comes in a  GT  (Gran Turismo) deck configuration, carefully conceived for the owner by  Nauta Design , also responsible for the yacht’s  exterior and interior design.

SW105GT Taniwah on her Maiden Voyage

Taniwha’s interior features Southern Wind’s most popular  owner’s cabin forward layout. Aft of the saloon, she has two cabins, an en suite VIP cabin with a walk-around bed, and a second en suite twin guest cabin. A day head and studio are placed fore of the saloon.

SW105GT Taniwha Deck Plan

Taniwha stands out for the elegance of her interior, as  Massimo Gino  from  Nauta Design  explains: “For us here at Nauta Design Taniwha’s interiors are state-of-the-art: in just one yacht you find all of the latest design innovations combined in a coherent way and perfectly matching the GT style of the deck.”

“Floating lockers fixed to the hull sides emphasize the yacht’s hull shape giving a feeling of lightness; slanted and curved bed bases allow for extra cabin space, counters covered with fabric perfectly match the teak softening the perception of volumes; the combination of the light flooring and the fabric-covered wall panels give brightness and warmth to the interior”. These are just some of the small details that make Taniwha a supernatural creature, as her Maori name recalls.

Fair winds, Taniwha.

Video: Southern Wind's fourth SW105 sailing yacht Taniwha delivered

South African yard Southern Wind 's fourth SW105 sailing superyacht Taniwha has departed on its maiden voyage following delivery.

The 35.39 metre yacht was launched in Cape Town in April after being sold to a first time Southern Wind customer described as “a passionate yachtsman”. Designed by Farr Yacht Design and Nauta Design , the yacht is penned as an “elegant and fast bluewater cruiser”. It follows the third hull in the series christened The Power of 2 .

Taniwha features a GT (Gran Turismo) deck configuration, “generous sail plan” and “light configuration”, including a lifting keel that reduces the yacht’s draft from 5.9 metres to 3.8 metres.

Nauta Design's Massimo Gino said: "This new deck design has an innovative and clean look that is driven by the methods of composite construction and by racing yacht styling. We think that our GT design will be a successful new style because it rests on a solid base of concepts which are the expression of a pure design."

The yard has paid particular attention to weight optimisation on the yacht, resulting in a full carbon hull. The hydraulic and electric power management systems have also been kept intentionally lightweight. These changes have resulted in a displacement reduction of more than three tons in comparison to the first three hulls in the series.

Accommodation on board is for a total of six guests in three cabins; an owner’s cabin forward and two guest cabins aft of the saloon, one VIP and one twin. All guest cabins are ensuite. The crew area aft meanwhile allows accommodation for five staff, including an ensuite captain’s cabin. Described as "home-like", the interior features a number of eco-friendly materials.

Gino added: “The interior design is 100% new. It's the result of a well-planned mixture of materials and geometries that we have developed on our most recent yachts. It’s elegant and understated but never predictable."

First look: SW 105 Taniwha

Further details have been revealed about SW 105 Taniwha, with a larger skylight in the saloon allowing for a huge quantity of natural light below decks

sailing yacht taniwha

Following her delivery voyage to Europe, Southern Wind’s fourth 105, SW 105 Taniwha has been revealed in all her glory. Yachting World has covered details of her lightweight build before. Suffice to say that performance was a cornerstone of the design.

As Taniwha will spend 90% of her time cruising in the Mediterranean, the newly-revealed interior will come into its own. Nauta has continued the low-profile lines of the exterior below deck, and brought out the hull’s curves in the large saloon and three double cabins.

“We put a fantastic skylight in the saloon, which is a real element of the interior design because it allows for a huge quantity of natural light flooding in,” says Nauta’s Luca Pedol. “There’s a teak frame around the skylight, which raises the perception of space.”

In the cabins, the beds appear to float, as do the lockers fixed directly to the side of the hull. “They are more functional, more beautiful and they show the hull shape, instead of hiding it,” Pedol explains.

There’s widespread use of teak below deck, just as there is above. It has been desaturated and oil-treated to create an appealing finish. “It is lovely,” says Nauta’s Massimo Gino. “Warm but bright, easy on the eye and soft to the touch. The combination of the light flooring and the fabric-covered wall panels gives brightness to the interior.”

The fourth hull of the popular SW105 model, luxury sailing yacht TANIWHA , was christened and launched in front of her new Owners at the Southern Wind shipyard in South Africa on the 18th of April.

The name ‘Taniwha’ comes from Māori mythology from New Zealand and relates to beings that were often revered as guardians of the caves, pools, rivers and seas that they called home.

Built for passionate Owners who provided input throughout the design and construction process, S/Y TANIWHA has a GT (Gran Turismo) deck configuration from Nauta Design , which also produced the interior and exterior styling. There is a reduced coachroof and broader cockpit in comparison to the previous SW105 DS and RS models, and the helm positions have been moved close to the gunwales for improved views. As a result, there is now space for a sunbathing area below the manoeuvring cockpit as well as a garage to store a 4.5m/14.8ft tender.

The naval architecture comes from  Farr Yacht Design and includes a fully-carbon hull with Nomex and pre-preg used in the foredeck and cockpit. The mast and boom are made in high modulus carbon, and together with EC6 standing rigging support a generous sail plan. S/Y TANIWHA also has a fixed single rudder, an extended bowsprit of 3.12m/10ft and a lifting keel that reduces from 5.9m/19ft to 3.8m/12.5ft.

Massimo Gino from Nauta Design describes the appearance as “an innovative and clean look that is driven by the methods of composite construction and by racing yacht styling”, resulting in what is expected to be a desirable new style for the future Owners of the SW105 model. As with the classic Gran Turismo cars which were designed for enjoyment travelling across the long-distance at speed, S/Y TANIWHA is a bluewater cruiser that will be able to cross vast distances in excellent time, while providing the utmost comfort onboard.

The interior layout provides a spacious salon, and forward is a studio convertible to a double en-suite cabin and day head. The Owner’s cabin is father forward, and behind the salon is the VIP stateroom and twin cabin, both of which have their own en-suite bathroom. The aft area is reserved for the crew working area and cabins, which sleep five.

S/Y TANIWHA will now undergo sea trials before heading off on her maiden voyage.

Nauta Design has showcased the depth of its design skills in the brand-new Southern Wind 105GT, Taniwha , one of the stars of the recent Monaco Yacht Show. Delivered this summer , she has just had her first public outing and collected plaudits from across the sector.

It was a particularly challenging project because it meant interpreting the owners brief by adding customizations to the versatile SW105 platform and Southern Wind proved to be the right shipyard to master this challenge at best.  The Milan-based studio had already drawn the deck lines and designed the interior for the previous three hulls in this Southern Wind’s ‘smart custom’ line series.

“When Southern Wind introduced us to the potential clients, we carefully noted all their wishes and brief and immediately had that light-bulb moment,” says Nauta co-founder Massimo Gino. “We gave rise to a sleeker, sporty,  automobile design-inspired version of the boat, featuring a new deck design which – together with Southern Wind Shipyard – we christened the “Gran Turismo”. When our new design for this SW105 #4 was presented, we could tell by the enthusiasm in the owners’ eyes that we had understood and matched their brief.”

Southern Wind took a hard look at every element of the design in order to save weight in an efficient way– eventually delivering a yacht that displaced less than the fastest SW105 to date, thus not compromising the comfort typical of a superyacht.

“We wanted to save weight in a clever way. For every kilogram weight saving proposed we offered a rating. Saving weight higher up above deck is good and well spent, with a strong benefit in terms of distance from the center of gravity” says Andrea Micheli, Southern Wind Shipyard Commercial Director.

It drove Nauta to completely redesign the deck to create a sense of speed and streamlining. A lower toe-rail, a slender  coachroof and a cockpit that is wider and shallower – all have been combined to great effect.

“This new deck design has an innovative and clean look that is driven by the methods of composite construction and by racing yacht styling,” says Gino. “The end result is a yacht that combines a powerful sail plan and lightweight construction with all the comforts of a bluewater cruiser.”

Behind the scenes of Nauta's groundbreaking design for Southern Wind 105GT Taniwha

In celebration of fast lines

The owners’ attention to all  was essential to achieving the harmonious and balanced end result seen in the interiors. The Owners’ brief was very clear: they wanted to have a holistic indoor-outdoor connection, and that connection be expressed in all the styling under deck, which should be sober, clean, light as the deck design. Natural materials should be used for the interior furniture, and they requested that every detail was carefully designed so as to be “over the top” and set a new reference in interior design.

Behind the scenes of Nauta's groundbreaking design for Southern Wind 105GT Taniwha

The  interior design and geometry follows the natural curves of the hull rather than seeking to obscure it behind the 90-degree corners of standard cabinetry. Nowhere is this approach clearer than in the owner’s cabin forward and two guest cabins aft.

The cabins feature  floating lockers fixed to the hull sides, which are functional and beautiful while also showing, instead of hiding, the yacht’s true hull shape. The beds are on slanted and curved bases that create extra foot room and harmonise the yacht’s hull shape.

There is widespread use of teak below deck, just as there is above. It has been desaturated and oil-treated to create a finish that appeals to more than just the eyes. “It is lovely,” says Gino. “Warm but bright, easy on the eye and soft to the touch. The combination of the light flooring and the fabric-covered wall panels gives brightness to the interior.”

Generously sized bathrooms feature lightweight moulded resin basins and surfaces, specially formulated by expert Italian craftsmen to perfectly resemble “Italian stucco”.  The main saloon includes a stunning teak dome  around the skylight, which emphasises the abundant natural light and the headroom, while creating a sense of cosiness.

Teak tables in the welcoming full-beam saloon have a double purpose, capable of rising to provide dining, or lowering to become a coffee table . The tables, too, are designed to look as if they’re light and floating by using a top that shows thin edges with metal inlay – echoing the effect seen elsewhere on the boat.

Taniwha’s interiors are state-of-the-art and represent the latest step in the recent evolutionary phase in sailing superyacht design “In this  yacht you’ll find all of our latest design innovations combined in a particularly coherent way so that they match perfectly with the GT style of the yacht’s exteriors. Here we have  the same language in and out, it is holistic” says Gino. The Owners’ lifestyle fulfilled the interiors with a sober and elegant taste.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.
