How Justin Simien’s Haunted Mansion Channels the Classic Disney Ride, Ghosts and All

Haunted Mansion was launched as a theme park attraction at Disneyland in 1969. Riders get strapped inside “doom buggies” and whisked through a spooky old manor with chills and thrills around every corner. The ride doesn’t end at the last stop, either. A mirror along the exit captures the image of a phantom prankster attaching itself to each visitor. For Disney’s upcoming Haunted Mansion film, director Justin Simien wants to bring that feeling home.
“My number one goal as a filmmaker is to make sure you actually get haunted,” Simien tells Den of Geek magazine. “I was nine when I rode the Haunted Mansion at Disney World , and you couldn’t tell me that dude was not still over my shoulder all around the park.”
The feeling never left, so Simien brought that spirit to pitch meetings. He had to know how to project that sensation. “There’s a physicality to the ghosts you can’t explain,” he says. “They may not be there, but they’re somewhere.”
Ad – content continues below
Simien couldn’t find that special presence, though, from the last time Disney attempted to make the ride into a movie via The Haunted Mansion in 2003, which starred Eddie Murphy . “When I was a kid, I was disappointed it wasn’t the mansion at the theme parks,” Simien tells us. “ This ,” he insists about his new film, “is the mansion you see at Disneyland.”
In that mansion, audiences will meet single mother Gabbie ( Rosario Dawson ) as she moves into the estate with her son. The place is cheap because it is already crowded with tenants who are ghosts of their former selves, so she hires paranormal investigator Ben ( LaKeith Stanfield ), psychic Harriet (Tiffany Haddish), college history professor Bruce ( Danny DeVito ), and Father Kent ( Owen Wilson ), for a bit of haunted house cleaning.
The director, who acted in the Disneyland cast early in his career, had studied the attraction thoroughly long before making the movie. “I even got to walk through it before the park was open,” Simien says. “It was kind of sad because they turned the lights on, and all of the magic was ruined. But it was amazing. I’ve ridden it so many times; there were so many little details I never knew were there.”
Still, Simien felt trepidation when he heard Disney was considering a Haunted Mansion remake. “I had had the same reaction anybody finding out a Haunted Mansion movie is coming out would have: ‘Okay, we’re doing that again.’” Yet strange twists come in the witching hours. “I read this thing expecting, frankly, to pass on it, and I stayed up all night. Katie Dippold, who wrote the script, tells the story through a journey through the mansion. I knew when I got this job, I had to do justice to this script and to that ride.”
Nor was he alone. Most of Hollywood loves the terrifying attraction. Jared Leto took even that to new levels, creating new speech patterns to match his ghostly character’s eternal dilemma (his head disappears from his shoulders and reappears in a box). This generation’s most dedicated method actor also flirted with playing the Hat-Box Ghost without effects.
“He wanted all of that going on during recordings; he was in full gear,” Simien concedes. “Luckily, he didn’t take it far enough to suggest: ‘Okay, I’m gonna go to the other side, and you’re going to channel me, and then I’ll do the scene.’ But he comes very prepared for everything.”
The director also readied the set and cast by tuning into paranormal thinking. “I’m a little woo-woo already,” Simien admits. “ Ghost stories and a connection to the other side, that’s just in my DNA. When we started shooting, I went a little crazy. I bought crystals and gave them out. I got into burning different things, setting my intentions. I really wanted to mentally go there.”

Still, one cast member known for going there remains a mystery guest at the film’s mansion. When it comes to Winona Ryder , little is known about her role, and the director will only tease, “[She] was really a hoot to work with. I don’t want to say where she appears.”
This is not for shock value. It makes for a better story. “I definitely want people to feel like they’re not sure how the tricks were done,” Simien says. “Strip everything away—the effects, the ride, all the goodies—and this is a movie about people who would not get along under any other circumstances, finding a way to find a family with each other.”
Or at least share a ride. There are 999 ghosts in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion, and room for one more. Simien would be thrilled to fill the vacancy. “Whatever happens on the other side, this is the place to be. They got music, a rotating set of guests. You can talk to people from any time period. When you see the movie, I don’t know how you wouldn’t wanna hang out in this house. Once you get past the terror, it’s a lot of fun.”
Haunted Mansion opens in theaters on July 28.

‘Haunted Mansion’ Review: Disney Horror Comedy Channels Its Spooky Illusions From Original Ride
Justin Simien's creative, post-'Pirates' reboot of the Disneyland attraction features decent laughs from Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson and Danny DeVito, but disappoints in the VFX department

For a few years there back in the early ’80s, Disney took a turn to the dark side, releasing live-action movies like “The Watcher in the Woods” (featuring a creepy late-career Bette Davis) and “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (from the mind of Ray Bradbury) that were intense enough to inspire nightmares — in kids, at least. The youngsters of that time are now parents, and some are surely asking themselves how far they can trust Disney not to traumatize another generation when a movie like “ Haunted Mansion ” comes along.
These days, practically every Disney movie seems to be haunted by the specters of what came before, as the company keeps exploring ways to tap into its existing IP. You know the fairytale/animated feature/ride, now see the movie — or so goes the pitch, as the studio counts on audiences to make the connections between each film and whatever inspired it. “Haunted Mansion” benefits from the example of “Pirates,” taking what parkgoers love about the ride (clever sight gags and imaginative ghosts, in this case) and treating those as Easter eggs in a fairly compelling stand-alone story.
While the visual effects are surprisingly weak for a film of this scale, the script (from “Ghostbusters” writer Katie Dippold) proves far better than anyone might expect, establishing an emotional foundation for what might otherwise be a gimmick-driven haunted house movie. The film opens on a meet-cute between a skeptical astrophysicist, Ben ( LaKeith Stanfield ), and a woman who puts much more faith in all things supernatural (played by Charity Jordan), then skips forward a few years, after tragedy has cut their marriage short.
The movie’s first few paranormal illusions are fairly effective, as Simien takes his cues from the Disneyland ride. (Come to find, Simien actually worked at the park one summer in film school.) But as the film unfolds and other characters join the ghost-busting operation — including a loudmouthed medium named Harriet ( Tiffany Haddish ) and Bruce (Danny DeVito), a dyspeptic Tulane professor who specializes in all things supernatural — “Haunted Mansion” starts to require more elaborate CGI, and visual effects supervisor Edwin Rivera and the team at Industrial Light & Magic seem overwhelmed. Meanwhile, Al Nelson’s sound design adds an invisible but essential boost to the ambiance.
As mystical Madame Leota, Jamie Lee Curtis appears awkwardly superimposed on a crystal ball, looking like something out of a low-budget “Goosebumps” episode. And Simien took the trouble to cast Jared Leto as the headless Hatbox Ghost, who’s intriguing when glimpsed in silhouette or quick flashes here and there, but disappoints when finally revealed as a subpar CG ghoul with cartoonish features. Even so, the film’s single funniest scene involves Stanfield (as the film’s sullen straight man) and DeVito (who took a shining to horror in the early 2010s, tapping into that dark streak here) describing said apparation to a police sketch artist.
The more this overlong movie relies on ghosts, the less engaging it becomes, and though Simien presents a few optical illusions — such as endless hallways and a stretching room modeled after the ride’s trompe l’oeil antechamber — the ideas are more interesting than the execution. While most of the cast gets laughs by bickering, Ben and Travis deliver the film’s more serious message (this is a Disney movie, after all). Both characters have lost loved ones and might be tempted to join them on the other side. “Haunted Mansion” honors their grieving process, even as it attempts to put smiles on audiences’ faces.

Strollers are not allowed in most queues at Walt Disney World. Instead, you’ll need to leave your stroller in the designated stroller parking area at the entrance to the queue.
When Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, Haunted Mansion was one of the original attractions in the park.
It was inspired by Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion which had opened just two years earlier and was wildly popular with guests of all ages.
While Walt Disney had envisioned a haunted house attraction for Disneyland in his original concept for also Disney World, it would not be completed until after his passing.
The attraction was designed by legendary Imagineers Claude Coates and Marc Davis. Rolly Crump and Yale Gracey worked together to create the ghostly illusions and special effects.
The mansion’s famous rollicking song, “Grim Grinning Ghosts,” was written by Xavier “X” Atencio.
While the Disneyland and Disney World Haunted Mansion experiences are similar, they are not identical.

Haunted Mansion script question

So, listening to the audio through YouTube and finding scripts, the following quote: "We have 999 happy haunts here, but there's room for 1,000 . . . any volunteers?" What's absolutely bugging me - and kind of freaking me out, because I can hear it in my head, but know that 1,000 has to be mentioned at some point, otherwise what difference does "one more make" - but I absolutely can hear in my head, and have found many, many references online to it being: "there's always room for one more." What the hell!!! Has this script ever changed? Is there some other point where he says "always room for one more?" I'd say, okay, this is just one of those common misquotes, but I swear I can hear that quote, so am I getting it from somewhere?

it's always been "always room for one more" as long as I can remember - but I know in my head I do the math so I imagine the number 1000. Could be a Mandela effect thing!
"but there's room for 1000" has been part of the Haunted Mansion since it's opening at Disneyland in 1969. There have been no fundamental changes to the script. Paul Frees, the voice of the "Ghost Host" died in 1986. Mandela Effect in play here. Steve

I don’t understand are you saying the scripts and recordings say “but there’s room for a thousand, any volunteers?” BUT you remember/swear it used to say “but there’s room for one more, any volunteers?”??

Here's the full text of the script for WDW's version. The Disneyland version has the identical lines, but the order is slightly different. Specifically, the line in question occurs before you get on a Doom Buggy at Disneyland, rather than after, as in the WDW version. Steve Haunted Mansion (Magic Kingdom) (Narration begins when guests enter the Mansion foyer.) GHOST HOST When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls. Whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still — that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight! (Guests move into Stretching Room.) GHOST HOST Your cadaverous pallor betrays an aura of foreboding, almost as though you sense a disquieting metamorphosis. Is this haunted room actually stretching? Or is it your imagination — hmm? And consider this dismaying observation: this chamber has no windows and no doors… which offers you this chilling challenge: to find a way out! Of course, there’s always my way. (Thunder claps, lights go out, someone screams. Doors begin to open and lights come back on.) Oh, I didn’t mean to frighten you prematurely. The real chills come later. Now, as they say, “look alive,” and we’ll continue our little tour. And let’s all stay together, please. (Guests move into hallway.) And now, a carriage approaches to carry you into the boundless realm of the supernatural. Once on board, remain safely seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside. And watch your children, please. (Guests board Doom Buggies.) Do not pull down on the safety bar, please. I will lower it for you. And heed this warning: the spirits will materialize only if you remain quietly seated at all times. Oh yes, and no flash pictures, please . We spirits are frightfully sensitive to bright lights. (Spanish safety spiel) (Doom Buggies pass into Library.) Our library is well-stocked with priceless first editions — only ghost stories, of course — and marble busts of the greatest ghost writers the literary world has ever known. They have all retired here, to the Haunted Mansion. Actually, we have 999 happy haunts here. But there’s room for 1,000. Any volunteers? (Doom Buggies move into Esher Staircase Room.) If you should decide to join us, final arrangements may be made at the end of the tour. (Doom Buggies move into Corridor of Doors.) We find it delightfully unlivable here in this ghostly retreat. Every room has wall-to-wall creeps, and hot and cold running chills. Shhh, listen! MAN IN COFFIN Let me out, let me out of here! (Door knockers clang, clock ticks. Doom Buggies move into Madame Leota’s Room.) MADAME LEOTA Serpents and spiders, tail of a rat, call in the spirits, wherever they’re at! (Sounds of ghosts.) Rap on a table — it’s time to respond. Send us a message from somewhere beyond… (Knock on table.) Goblins and ghoulies from last Halloween, awaken the spirits with your tambourine! (Sound of a tambourine.) Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond, let there be music from regions beyond! (A brass instrument plays part of “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”) Wizards and witches, wherever you dwell, give us a hint, by ringing a bell! (A bell rings.) (Doom Buggies pass into Ballroom.) The happy haunts have received your sympathetic vibrations and are beginning to materialize. They’re assembling for a swinging wake, and they’ll be expecting me… I’ll see you all a little later. (Organ plays theme music. Two portraits shoot at each other.) (Doom Buggies move into Attic.) BRIDE In sickness and in… wealth. You may now kiss the bride. We’ll live happily ever after. Till death do us part. Here comes the bride. As long as we both shall live. For better or for… worse. I do. I did . (Doom Buggies move out of Attic window and into Graveyard.) VARIOUS GHOSTS (Sung) When the crypt doors creak and the tombstones quake, Spooks come out for a swinging wake. Happy haunts materialize and begin to vocalize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize! Now, don’t close your eyes and don’t try to hide, For a silly spook may sit by your side. Shrouded in a daft disguise, they pretend to terrorize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize! As the moon climbs high o’er the dead oak tree, Spooks arrive for the midnight spree. Creepy creeps with eerie eyes start to shriek and harmonize. Grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize! When you hear the knell of a requiem bell, Weird glows gleam where spirits dwell. Restless bones etherealize, rise as spooks of every size! (Doom Buggies pass into Hitchhiking Ghosts Corridor.) GHOST HOST Ah, there you are! And just in time… there’s a little matter I forgot to mention — beware of hitchhiking ghosts! They have selected you to fill our quota, and they’ll haunt you until you return! LITTLE LEOTA Hurry back! Hurry back! Be sure to bring your death certificate… if you decide to join us. Make final arrangements now! We’ve been dying to have you… GHOST HOST Now I will raise the safety bar, and a ghost will follow you home! GHOSTS VOICEOVER (Sung) If would like to join our jamboree, There’s a simple rule that’s compulsory. Mortals pay a token fee; Rest in peace, the haunting’s free. So hurry back, we would like your company.

What also gets me is that it's not just that so many people think it's "room for one more," and it's not just swapping "room for 1,000" for "room for one more." So many people (myself included) have it as "there's always room for one more." The "always" is an addition to it that so many have. If you google it, it comes up all the time (including in passing reference on wdwinfo.com - not directly quoting the script, but referring to Haunted Mansion and mentioning "there's always room for one more).
The mandala effect is so fascinating!

Haunted Mansion FAQ
This depends on the person. The ride is dark and spooky. Nothing will jump out at you or is intended to scare you. Some of the scenes are a bit on the scary side. There is not blood or anything gory though. Parts of it are loud, which is what scared my 3 year old on the ride.
The biggest reason the ride stops is for people in wheelchairs to get on or off the ride. They have to stop it since they need a little more time.
The Eddy Murphy movie from 2003 titled The Haunted Mansion was based on a mix of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion ride and the Haunted Mansion Magic Kingdom ride.
There are so many fun and spooky sayings and quotes from the Haunted Mansion ride! I hope you loved reading these Disney Haunted Mansion sayings from the Haunted Mansion script.
