Green Bay Yacht Club invites public to see restored lighthouses
by FOX 11 News
GREEN BAY (WLUK) — The public was invited for free tours of the Green Bay Yacht Club Sunday.
Visitors were able to take a look at the refurbished Grassy Island Range Lights.
They were built in 1872 and guided mariners until they were decommissioned in the early 20 century.
Club members contributed countless hours to restore the lighthouses.
"It's an honor. If you look, that's the first thing a lot of people in this city see, our lighthouse," said Gary Kuschel, commodore.
The lighthouses were placed on the National Register of History Places in 2005.

In the present condition of the entrance [at Green Bay] a vessel can get out of Chicago harbor loaded with one hundred tons more freight than it can from this; and by reason of its tortuousness, it is entirely inaccessible by night, and dangerous at all times. In contemplation of the easier access to Green bay that the present improvement will allow, when completed, vessel owners are calculating upon receiving the freight of Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin entirely at this port, instead of receiving a large portion of it at Milwaukee and Chicago, as at present. In consequence of the crooked channel, and the difficulty and expense of navigating it, it costs from three cents to four cents per bushel more to ship wheat from this port to the same ports eastward.
“Lights on the Fox” boat parade
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - More than 30 lighted and decorated boats floated through downtown Green Bay Friday night. The Green Bay Yacht Club hosted “Lights on the Fox.”
Starting at about 8:30, the boat parade traveled up and down the Fox River in Green Bay, looping between the Main Street and Mason Street bridges.
People were invited to come down and watch the display from the bridges, CityDeck and Fox River Trail, and along the west bank of the Fox River.
The yacht club hopes to make this an annual event.

Oconto mayoral election is rematch between John Panetti, Cliff Martin
It will be a rematch in the race to be mayor of Oconto.
Incumbent John Panetti will seek his second two-year term while Cliff Martin will look to take the reins.
The two also faced off in 2022 as they sought to succeed Lloyd Heier, who chose not to run for reelection after three terms. Panetti received nearly 61% of the vote, defeating Martin.
The candidates were asked to answer a questionnaire to explain what makes them the better candidate and how they would address the most important issues facing the city. Candidates are listed in alphabetical order by last name and answers have been lightly edited for clarity.
For information about registering to vote and polling locations, visit the MyVote Wisconsin website at myvote.wi.gov/en-us .

Occupation: President/Owner Team Industries, Inc. Kaukauna, WI / Team Fabricators, LLC Port Arthur, TX
Campaign website: " John Panetti Mayor of Oconto " on Facebook
What makes you the better candidate in this race?
Martin: I pledge to be transparent with the citizens of Oconto no matter if the information is positive or negative. I commit to uphold and enforce a code of ethics that prioritizes accountability, integrity and honesty. Input from the citizens of Oconto is valuable and will be encouraged and taken seriously.
Panetti: The extensive business experience gained from starting Team Industries, Inc. 37 years ago brings leadership, team building, problem solving, along with Fiscal responsibility. For the past two years, I have made decisions with the best interests of the citizens of Oconto. It is also the dedication and drive I bring to the mayor’s position. I am present at meetings and city events. When I am not in the office, I am working remotely, making phone calls, conducting online meetings, talking to residents, listening to their suggestions and concerns, as well as promotingOconto’s small business and industry.
What are the top three challenges facing Oconto and what would you do about them?
Martin: 1. We need to rebuild the trust between the citizens, city employees, and the political body of Oconto and I believe we can accomplish this through transparency and open communication. A citizens’ forum will be established to garner community input on issues that might be facing the City of Oconto. I will also be available to meet with citizens on a one-on-one basis, will hold regular office hours for appointments and community members may also contact me via email and phone.
2. Regulating of the budget and budgeting process to control and pay down debt will be a priority. Immediately I will meet with department heads and work with them to evaluate spend and implement a plan to reduce expenses where possible. Regular meetings will be established to ensure we are staying on track and meeting our goals.
3. Consistent and fair enforcement of laws, ordinances and regulations in Oconto is necessary. Rules need to apply equally to all citizens and I feel this is essential in preserving community order and fostering growth. With my experience as president of the PFC, I am confident I accomplish these goals.
Panetti: Oconto’s five largest employers all face the same problem, a shortage of skilled labor. This is not a healthy situation as it restricts company growth and creates the potential for companies to relocate their businesses out of Oconto and possibly even out of Wisconsin. We need to attract more residents to the city. We can accomplish this by offering affordable childcare options along with additional affordable City housing. I am working with TEDCOR (OCEDC) seeking grants and low interest loans for developer as this is my number one priority. Continuing to grow and support Oconto’s businesses, searching for opportunities to fill downtown vacant storefronts plus working to promote events that bring people to Oconto. The new Oconto Chamber of Commerce, of which I strongly support, has been instrumental in promoting and growing local events in Oconto in conjunction with the highly successful Tourism committee. Lastly, I will continue to pursue avenues to ensure the city continues to proceed down a fiscallyresponsible path. I will continue this initiative working with the recently formed Finance committee.
What is your vision for growth in the community?
Martin: Revitalize our downtown, attract tourism and manufacturing firms to Oconto. I plan to work with businesses, property owners and residents to revitalize our downtown and encourage a mix of businesses that complement each other while drawing a variety of customers. I will start by contacting owners of vacant buildings and look for opportunities to fill them. I will be proactive and collaborate with the key stakeholders to develop a plan to further attract continuous tourism to our community. I will work to attract job-creating, taxpaying manufacturing firms to Oconto by actively marketing our city to potential investors.
Panetti: Tourism in Oconto is on the breaking edge of exploding. This industry alone will spur the demand for continued improvements in our business district and downtown development. The next 20 years Oconto will exceed the projected capacity for the downtown district. The key is changing the present mindset to a proactive willingness to grow Oconto. Some city ordinances are over 100 years old and will need updating to allow change in a more progressive manner. Expanding housing markets in Oconto will continue to draw new citizens from outside Wisconsin. This will also draw citizens from Green Bay, Marinette and the Shawano area opening a larger labor pool.
What is your proudest achievement in your personal or public life?
Martin: The proudest achievement in my personal life is my family. My wife, Donna, of 52 years, and four children and their families are the cornerstone of my life. Witnessing the growth of my children and the formation of their own families has been, and remains, an incredible journey that I am grateful to experience firsthand.
Panetti: My greatest personal accomplishment was raising three children who have developed into upstanding adults. Then being blessed with six grandchildren. My Christian faith has guided me through my life’s journey thus far. I was born, raised, and graduated from Oconto High School creating my commitment with passion to promote our amazing city. Being decisive and resilient to work through a lot of the unexpected challenges the city presented to a newly elected mayor. Achievements over the past two years include: Reinstate City Finance Committee, reinstate Wage and Personnel Committee, establish City-wide Airbnb/Hotel Rooming Tax, record-setting boat launches and revenue in 2023, relocation of WWI Howitzer cannon, reclaim of the Yacht Club liquor license, sourced $15,000 in funding from Oconto County to promote fishing tournaments, sourced a $10,000 sponsor for the 2024 Waterfest Fireworks Show, reduced city debt through principal payments.
