Vagabond 18 by Bateau.com

[vg18] a fast day sailor with cabin.

URL: http://www.bateau.com/proddetail.php?prod=VG18

Description:

The Vagabond 18 ( VG18 ) is a fast daysailor with cabin. It's program is mostly day sailing with occasional overnight cruises. The hull lines of the 18 are very close to the proven VG20 hull but the focus in this design was on a large cockpit and slightly smaller overall size.

Sailing performance was not sacrificed. Because of the program of the VG18 , we are able to use wide angle swept back spreaders and eliminate the backstay. We would not choose that rig for a cruising boat but it is perfectly adequate for a boat with a less ambitious program. This allows the use of a powerful fully battened main and will make the boat easy to handle under main alone.

If you want to sail in the Micro Class, the boat can be shortened 2" with a very simple change at the bow. We will include that modification in the plans on request.

The Vagabond 18 is an excellent first boat: simple lines, easy to build and to sail but elegant.

A 3HP outboard will push her at hull speed but anything larger than 6 HP is overkill.

The shallow draft CB and lifting rudder allows access to remote waters and makes launching and retrieving from the trailer very easy.

The aft part of the cockpit is and ideal swim platform.

Thanks to it's large battened main, the VG18 can be sailed as a catboat but she will show her full potential with the jib or spinnaker rigged on a retractable pole.

Tranquil cruising one day, performance sailing the next, the Vagabond 18 is a versatile boat on which a beginner can learn but will stay exciting for an experienced sailor.

From the bow: a classic vee birth close to 7' long in diagonal with room for a Porta-Potty underneath. Immediately behind the mast bulkhead is a small galley to starboard faced by a hanging locker or storage bin to port.

The saloon is short because priority was given to cockpit space but two long bunks (7' 8") extend under the cockpit seats.

The boat can be built without the galley or the locker shown on the port side. This will produce a open and clean layout with more seating room. All the frame dimensions for that layout are on the plans.

The cockpit is as large as in some 35' sailboats! The total length is just a few inches under 8' and the two benches are 6' long: once can sleep under the stars. There are convenient lockers in the backrests (gunwale). The cockpit and benches are sloped towards the stern and drain easily and fast.

The tiller runs under the main traveler making sail adjustments easy. It can be fitted with an extension.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Looking at outboard motors for my Vagabond 17Ft sailboat. Any ideas on size of motor that works with the vagabond 17. also I see 15 inch and 20 inch shaft, I’m assuming a 15 inch shaft would work since the motor would be lowered down into the water. When looking at motors on line, what does “sail ready” refer to. Is it refereing to the propeller? thank you

Timm R Oday25

Timm R Oday25

I'd opt for the 20" as you are going to want to keep the cavitation plate as low as possible. A 4 horse would be ideal . The less weight back there the better balanced your boat will be. The transom will thank you by not having to deal with any more weight than absolutely neccessary

The cavitation plate should be at least two inches below the underside of the hull. Each boat is different and so are different sailing venues. If you stand by the mast how much does your stern raise up? What is the average height of waves or wakes in the lake.

Thank you. Didn’t think of that. Very helpful when figuring out the motor needs.

Crazy Dave Condon

What is the displacement weight of boat and where sailed? Photo of transom would help but concur from the standpoint as a former dealer a 20 inch shaft which we can verify with a transom photo

I attached a photo of the transom. When attached to the motor mount and the motor lowered into the water would a 15 inch shaft work or would the motor and steering be compromised because it is to far down once once in the water. I’m thinking a 4 horse motor. Mostly sailing on lakes and reservoirs. Occasionally Tomales Bay (salt water) in Sonoma County, Ca. Thank you. Peter

With the type of motor mount you have (one that lowers ) you might get by with a 15" . The outboard wont affect your rudder unless your prop . Often you need to turn both your outboard and rudder .

Johnb

My experience from my Clipper Marine days is that you can't get that propeller too deep. The real problem is how much that motor mount goes up and down, either heading into a chop or in power boat wakes. The prop coming out the water is maddening. I would buy the longest shaft available. The cost difference is probably next to nothing.

No such thing as too deep. As the boat pitches when the wind and waves are up, the prop will stay in the water and keep driving the boat. You can also not have to lower the engine so far, and keep the engine itself a bit higher from the surface when in a bad chop while the propellor stays under water. Go for the longest shaft (20") Also don't over power. Any boat of less than 2500 lbs displacement only needs about 3 HP. My Sonar, 2300 lbs was fine with 3 HP and my Oday 25, 2500 lbs, was fine with a 6 HP (4 cycle) Tohatsu extra long shaft (25")

john6206

I’ve been looking at outboards for awhile, and there are endless trade offs. yes, a 3 or 3.5hp is plenty for my boat, but some of them don’t have a reverse gear! To reverse you spin the whole motor around, which means you can’t lock it off, which means trying to steer with one hand on the tiller and the other on the motor, operating the throttle with your teeth I guess.

Majestic saves Vagabond’s wine bars – but one London branch to shutter

Retailer Majestic Wines has bought Vagabond Wines out of administration, promising to expand the wine bar brand when the right opportunity comes knocking.

The UK’s largest specialist wine retailer last month confirmed talks regarding a possible takeover after Vagabond went into insolvency.

On Friday, the business backed by Fortress Investment Group said it had completed the acquisition, saving 171 jobs in the process.

Nine of its stores will also remain open, however an underperforming site in Canary Wharf will be shuttered.

John Colley, chief executive of Majestic said: “We are delighted to have secured this partnership with Vagabond Wines and are looking forward to working with the team to share our collective passion, expertise and love of wine.”

The boss also said he sees potential to open new wine bars when the “right opportunities arise”.

He added: “The completion of this deal marks the start of a long-term partnership and we are committed to investing in the Vagabond business, with the potential to open new wine bars across the UK when the right opportunities arise.”

City A.M reported last month the London-based wine bar chain  asked the High Court t o appoint an administrator, as debts  caused the business to undertake restructuring.

Vagabond became known as a place for wannabe sommeliers to test their palate, with a host of high-end wines available by the glass through an innovative tap-and-pour system.

Matt Fleming, managing director o f Vagabond, said: “In Majestic, we believe we have found the perfect partner to enhance the unique strengths of the Vagabond business and drive a new phase of profitable growth.

“Vagabond’s bars help our customers discover unique, quality wines in a highly experiential setting – values that align perfectly with what Majestic’s colleagues do every single day in their stores.”

Majestic Wines, which now has over 200 stores, has performed well in recent months, attracting more than 60,000 customers over Christmas.

It marks another year of progress and investment for Majestic, following its separation from Naked Wines plc and acquisition by Fortress Investment Group in December 2019.
